LETTER FROM RABBI SUFRIN There are hardly any words to describe this past year. It was one full of unprecedented challenges that demonstrated how special, resilient, and unified our community is. Though we were constantly tested, we always persevered with positivity and strength - an outcome which would not have been possible without our incredible community. It gave me and our staff tremendous chizuk to feel the power of the words from Chazal, “K’ish Echad B’lev Echad.” It was truly awe-inspiring to see everyone pull together for our students - this includes our heroic Administration, Rebbeim and faculty, and a special Hakarat Hatov to our donors who helped us ensure that we could offer more financial aid than ever before to assist families impacted by COVID. I would also like to express a special thank you to our Medical Task Force, chaired by Dr. Mark Hyman, for going lifnim meshurat hadin to guide us during this pandemic.

PILLARS OF A YULA EDUCATION:

PRIMACY AND RELEVANCY OF TORAH BOYS DIVISION REBBE TALMID RELATIONSHIP was a focus this year, during trying and difficult times, the Rebbeim found ways to connect with their talmidim not only in their shiur, but outside of shiur, through home deliveries, after school programs, and offering extra learning opportunities.

DAVENING was a constant in our students’ lives, even when learning was remote, in person minyanim ran daily on campus, in the valley, and in Hancock Park (and were offered on zoom).

PANTHER BACHUTZ, an after school program, was designed with the intention of allowing in person shiur, minyan and daily activities.

Thank you to our Rebbeim and staff that devoted time every evening just to be able to connect to the students outside the classroom.

GIRLS DIVISION The MECHANECHET (advisory) program returned, giving each student the opportunity to build a meaningful relationship with a role model or mentor on and off campus.

Along with women across the country, TANACH TUESDAYS continued with

over 30 perakim covered in the Shivat Tzion era every week.

The midrasha program, dedicated in memory of Dr. Leila Leah Bronner z”l, continued in the form of VIDRASHOT (“virtual midrashot”). Speakers featured YULA alumni, staff and community leaders.

UNCOMPROMISING GENERAL STUDIES

This year, despite the challenges of COVID, YULA High School exemplified what it means to be a rigorous academic institution and a state of the art college prep high school.

Faculty members at YULA Girls and YULA Boys used various innovative teaching methods to overcome the challenges of remote learning by: • Allowing all students to use online discussion boards and chats for class discussion, thus leveling the playing field between assertive participants and quieter students.

• Periodically using a flipped classroom strategy where students review the lesson via video the evening before class so valuable face time in class can be used for clarification and practice.

• Using breakout rooms to give students the opportunity to work in small groups • Electronic whiteboards

provide opportunities for students and teachers to interact in a creative digital space.

• Increased use of online production apps like Google Docs, Sheets, and Slides that enable ease in sharing and collaboration.

NEW PROGRAMS INTRODUCED YULA Model Congress team of 17 Girls and Boys participated in their first-ever Harvard Model Congress Competition!

Week of the Arts celebrated the creativity and talent of the students and faculty at YULA Girls. Celebrating Performing Arts, Visual Arts, Music and Literature, the weeklong program

highlights a new discipline each day, featuring work done by our students, along with stimulating programs, events and guest speakers.

The first ever Women’s Health & Genetics Seminar was led by Mrs. Bracha Rich, Genetics Counseling PHD student, and Mrs. Gila Block from the Yesh Tikvah organization.

This was a 5-part series educating 11th and 12th grade students about the complexities and intricacies of women’s health.

POPULAR PROGRAMS CONTINUED SENIOR SEMINAR WEEK At YULA Girls and YULA Boys respectively, Senior seminar week featured an alum, a rabbi, and a Jewish business person to

discuss life outside YULA and opportunities to represent Judaism and Israel.

MEMORIAL / COMMEMORATION DAYS Along with commemorating 9/11, Veterans Day and Memorial Day, YULA Girls commemorated for the first time the anniversary of Armenian Genocide.

Mr. Viktor Genjoyan, Chemistry and Physics teacher, shared his family’s emotional experience and the background to the Armenian Genocide. It was an extremely powerful and impactful event.

JOURNALISM ACHIEVEMENT YULA Boys Polymatheus Journal won its fourth Gold Medal and honors award from Columbia Scholastic Press Association.

NATIONAL MODEL UNITED NATIONS (YUNMUN) CONFERENCE

PILLARS OF A YULA EDUCATION:

CHARACTER DEVELOPMENT At YULA, we worry about the whole student and believe that the synthesis of Torah study, general studies, and co-curriculars is necessary to prepare our graduates for success in the 21st century and beyond.

This year in particular, faced with challenging circumstances, YULA Girls and YULA Boys seized the opportunity to focus on character development through relationship building, Chesed and community activism.

RELATIONSHIPS When we think of COVID, we think of sidewalk talks, backyard onegs and home deliveries.

COVID strengthened our relationships with our students, as both teachers and students at YULA Girls and YULA Boys went above and beyond to spend time with one another and socially, spiritually and emotionally connect.

This allowed both teachers and students to continue the warmth while also having fun in a safe way! These relationships will continue for many years to come.

YULA BACHUTZ (GIRLS)/ PANTHER BACHUTZ (BOYS) YULA faculty volunteered an approximate 64 additional hours a month of their time to participate in Bachutz programs. This program offered students the opportunity for in person interaction with their classmates, rebbeim and teachers after a day of distanced learning.

This program offered exciting in-person experience for students to learn Torah lishma, interact socially, and dive into experi-

ences that they may not typically be able to participate in. While some used their time on campus for college clinic, study skills and homework club, others enrolled in chugim such as woodworking, hip hop, fabrication, athletics, cooking, ceramics, and chesed. #COMMUNITYSTRONG After experiencing the challenges of COVID-19, last year we decided on the theme of #CommunityStrong. We choose this theme because, no matter what, we recognize that each individual is part of Klal Yisrael. COVID-19 taught us that even though we spent much

time alone, we needed to remain together, encouraging and supporting each other at all times. #CommunityStrong.

CHESED Even during a time when Chesed was very difficult because in person interaction was limited, YULA Girls and YULA Boys were able to give back to the community just as much as a regular year through Zoom Chai Lifelines meetings, several bloods drives, shabbos kits, Tomchei Shabbos, Yachad and the list goes on. Our students NEVER stop giving because our community is a top priority.

future of YULA?

What were the biggest challenges that YULA faced this year?

A.

A.

SETH: There was one generational challenge: COVID. The choices were impossible, requiring the wisdom of Solomon; speaking for myself, that is something I don’t possess. Our high school students were really the stars, showing remarkable resilience and patience. We decided to prioritize the safety of our students, staff and families, and secondarily, to comply with all applicable laws in a charged political environment, where stakeholders had diametrically opposed views about what we should do. Many parents had justifiable frustrations that inperson instruction and social engagements deserved to be prioritized because of how important they are to adolescent development. The bottom-line is that while we didn’t satisfy everyone, it turned into a successful and memorable year.

We also learned things along the way. The shorter school day revealed how much healthier that is for our kids, lessons that will continue to pay dividends post-COVID. Most important, even with the small fissures described above, for the most part, the community rallied behind YULA, and people showed enormous patience, grace, fortitude and, as a result, we became a warmer, gentler, kinder place – all for the better.

DAVID: The challenge of the pandemic hit every part of society which impacted our school in multiple ways as well. Our parent body, our faculty and our students were all forced to change in how they collaborated and how they taught and how they participated in the school’s curriculum and activities. The Administration did a remarkable job in coming up with Plan 1, pivoting into Plan 2, that ultimately pivoted sometimes into a third option. However after all was said and done, the students, staff and parents all showed remarkable patience and cooperation to create what still resulted in a very successful year for our students.

Going forward, I believe our school is stronger and wiser positioning themselves to meet future challenges ahead. I beam with PANTHER PRIDE in knowing that we are prepared for any challenge that will come before us in the future.

YULA is on the cusp of a historic merger.

Why is the merger of YULA Girls and YULA Boys significant for the

SETH: The merger of YULA will be nothing short of transformative. On a purely financial level, shaving $1.2 million in costs, representing 10% of the combined school budget, will enable us to hold down tuition growth for a meaningful amount of time. It is important for us to remember that we are stewards of communal funds, and that we don’t have a blank check to simply spend without looking for opportunities like this to relieve some of the impossible communal burden on our families — where possible. As important, being one school with one board and one leader, allows us to amplify our message and our impact on the community. Leveraging Rabbi Sufrin’s immense talents has brought us back to having over 400 students and the sky is the limit. We have the physical plant, first-tier rebbeim, mechanchot, teachers and administration to compete with the very best educational institutions across the country.

This is the only way to prepare our children to lead meaningful Torah lives and contribute to 21ST century progress.

DAVID: The merger of the YULA Boys Division and Girls Division will create a synergy amongst the schools that has not been felt for almost two (2) decades. With one Head of school for both divisions and one united Board of Directors, our collective vi-

sion and implementation of new goals will be accomplished faster and more reliably than ever could have been imagined. This potentiality for greater success will be accomplished with lower operating costs and a commitment to not raise tuition for the next few years (or more).

I look forward to working with Alan and Seth in achieving all of the goals we dreamed of, but could never have been accomplished without a united lay leadership that worked together in unison. Our future will be even stronger than out past.

Q.

Tell us about a meaningful moment this year that made you proud to be a part of the YULA family.

A.

SETH: I was most proud when the YULA graduation was dedicated in honor of Rachel Tabibi, A”H. The way the community rallied to support a family suffering from pain and loss was nothing short of inspiring. Rachel brought so many people together and the YULA community became better as a result, learning the lessons of Ve-Ahavta LeReacha Kamocha in the most expansive way as contemplated by the Rambam at the end of Hilchos Avel.

DAVID: After attending 13 different graduation ceremonies as part of my lay leadership responsibilities over the last 13 years, my pride and excitement to see the graduates this year has never been so high. Different than other graduations, this year I witnessed my son walk down the aisle at this year’s

Commencement Exercise. It was a real high point for myself and my whole family.

Beyond that, I took additional pride in witnessing all the other graduates walk down with huge smiles and a standing ovation from their parents and family as we all said goodbye to a school year that was challenged

by COVID and The Pandemic.

It was the perfect ending to a school year that was challenged at every turn, and yet in the end came out on top with Seniors beaming with pride and joy.

Q.

How have our supporters impacted YULA this year in particular?

A.

SETH: People reached deep, understanding that we were in a crisis. We broke every fundraising record. We had the best Trustees dinner ever, the biggest golf tournament ever, and the Girls school added a golf tournament as well.

Everyone was gracious, helpful, practical and put the school first. We are blessed to have the supporters we do. I know that David, Alan, and I, and the boards of both schools never take that for granted.

DAVID: Our supporters and benefactors proved to us more this past year than in any prior year, that when a challenge arrives, they will always be there for us. We all know that YULA Nation is generating tomorrow’s leaders and for that reason alone there is not a more important institution in the Los Angeles Modern Orthodox Jewish Community. Thank you all for your support and care.

CAMPUS ENHANCEMENTS

BOYS DIVISION Remodeling of the SCIENCE LABS was completed in Fall 2020. Thank you to Rina and Dr. Sherwin Isenberg for their dedication in honor of their parents and Cheryl and Dr. Ronald Nagel for their dedication in honor of their children.

Adding to YULA’s robust athletics program, weight equipment was installed in the Samson Center earlier this year while a WEIGHT ROOM was built in the lower level of the campus.

The weight room opened to students at the start of the 2021 school year. Donation opportunity is still available.

Enhancing the already impressive campus, the NAGEL ENTRY murals are now a beautiful welcome 20

to all visitors entering the campus. Thank you to Marnie and David Nagel for their sponsorship.

Remodeling of the SASSOON BEIT MIDRASH began this summer and we look forward to welcoming our students into the beautiful new shul this Fall. Thank you to Debbie and Sunny Sassoon for their sponsorship.

GIRLS DIVISION Significant SECURITY ENHANCEMENTS have been made on the Gindi Family Campus this year.

These include new, higher fencing around the north and western perimeter of the school, upgraded and added lighting around the entire perimeter of the school, newly installed lockdown pins into all classroom and office doors, and upgraded locks around the campus.

renovate and enhance the Kellerman gymnasium into a state of the art SPORTS COMPLEX. The complex will feature a brand new FITNESS CENTER and renovated basketball court unlike anything currently available to our students.

This space will include cardio and weight equipment, new flooring, renovated basketball court with newly designed floors, wall paneling, murals and basketball hoops.

Coming soon will be an upgraded camera system and a new visitor management system.

Concepts for newly a designed Beit Midrash, Plaza, and Student Learning Center are in progress.
