WELCOME TO ALFF'24 Welcome to the 22nd edition of the Available Light Film Festival! Dákwänī'į yū shäw ghànīddhän. (We are happy to see all of you) Shàw níthan, merci, gunalchîsh, thank you for coming to the Available Light Film Festival. The special time of the year when we meet each other in the comfort of a dark movie theatre to marvel, learn and wonder is just around the corner. We are impatient to bring back the magic of experiencing stories from around the world and to gather as a community between February 8th and 18th at the iconic Yukon Theatre, the Old Fire Hall and the Yukon Arts Centre, as well as on our virtual platform. As always, the ALFF team could now have done it without you, our loyal, adventurous and always curious audiences. We are extremely grateful for your support, patronage, and participation. We live in extraordinary part of this world in an engaged community that shares our passion for independent cinema and arts. This year, we are bringing you an exciting array of Yukon (sprinkled throughout the festival), national, and internationally acclaimed films. The ALFF 2024 opening film, The King Tide, directed by Christian Sparkes, is a beautifully-made mystery-thriller set on an island in the Atlantic where the residents are blessed after a massive storm with the arrival of a child with special healing powers as they cut themselves off from the rest of the world. Some of other Canadian features include the TIFF Top 10 Canadian films of 2023 where you can discover new visions, new voices and new perspectives in films like the hilarious Hey, Viktor!, the whimsical Humanist Vampire Seeking Consenting Suicidal Person, the dazzling The Queen of My Dreams, the spare and bracing Tautuktavuk (What We See) and the urgent documentary Someone Lives Here. International film highlights include Four Daughters (Tunisia), 20 Days in Mariupol (Ukraine), The Monk and the Gun (Bhutan), The Promised Land (Denmark), The Taste of Things (France), The Teachers’ Lounge (Germany), Perfect Days (Japan) and The Zone of Interest (United Kingdom) – a record of films we are bringing to Whitehorse this year that have been nominated at the Academy Awards. You can’t go wrong

with any of them. For the fourth year, Available Light spotlights Indigenous, Black, Persons of Colour and LGBTQ2S+ filmmakers with the Made in the North Award. ALFF is happy to award cash prizes to the three outstanding films by underrepresented filmmakers in ALFF Official Selection. The Made in the North Award is designed to advance the talent of BIPOC and LGBTQ2S+ Canadian filmmakers with a focus on those living in the northern territories and regions of Canada. There are three award categories: Best Canadian Feature Film, Best Canadian Short Film and Best Northern Short Film. We are also bringing back the Best Cinematography award, that shines spotlight on the best female-identifying folks who take you on eyeopening journeys with their skills and visual sensibilities. Thank you to all the filmmakers, creatives, industry delegates and participants who will take part in Q&As, ALFF Industry Forum events, ALFF Accelerator, ALFF Pitch Event, concerts and ALFF Creator talks. The Yukon Film Society is honoured to host many talented creatives each year at Available Light. We thank our audiences and partners for their support in championing emerging and diverse voices. MADE IN THE NORTH AWARDS Available Light Film Festival is proud to celebrate underrepresented filmmakers through its Made in the North awards. The awards give cash prizes to three films directed by underrepresented filmmakers in our festival lineup. Films are selected by a jury of diverse film professionals. Eligibility is open to all feature films and short films in Official Selection by Black, Indigenous, people of colour, and LGBTQ2S+ filmmakers in Canada. The Dark Fruits are not your typical starryeyed-youngster indie rock band. They may be starry-eyed, but their experiences and perspectives bring a unique depth to their music. They are bound by a love for making music that is authentically northern with a quirky, universal appeal. Their chilled-out sound of their second full-length album, Warm Weather Starter Pack, was recorded with just three members – Tara Martin, the rhythmic heartbeat on drums and back-up vocals; Jordy Walker, the versatile maestro on guitars, bass, synth, and production; and emerging singer-songwriter, Jeff Wolosewich. Their ALFF show will also include Yukon music-scene stalwarts Selina Heyligers-Hare on bass and Andrea McColeman on keyboards. While their first album earned them a showcase opportunity at Breakout West 2019 and the Audience Choice Award at the Yukon Film Society/Music Yukon's 24-hour Music Video Challenge, their focus has evolved. Their new music delves into the themes of connection, separation, and the unique experiences of living in – and sometimes leaving - the northern wilderness. It's an album that speaks to anyone seeking meaning in an everchanging world. Also featured at ALFF this year will be their music video for their single, “Florida”, which features archival 8mm footage from Yukon Archives that has sent a wave of nostalgia across the Yukon. 16

Jicklinghouse Jicklinghouse swells from the imaginations of Sam Gallagher, Peter Jickling, and Scott Maynard. Sam plays the lap steel, Scott plays a menagerie, and Peter reads his poetry. Together they search for areas of resonance between spoken word and improvisational jazz rock. No journey is ever the same. DJ Jon Gel Raised on Detroit radio during the birth of techno and the heyday of hip-hop, Jon Gelinas brings a musical pedigree informed by everything from funk, punk, and early house to downtempo and the Dead. A dabbler in the depths, Jon Gel is known to present an eclectic mix of floor fillers and left field favourites.

They grew up listening to the music of their parents,and their parents' parents before them. Their unique brand of authentic country-roots music imparts traditional arrangements with a contemporary disposition, reminiscent of old-time dances in hotel taverns and barrooms, barns, kitchens and saloons.

DIR. REEVA BILLY, 2023, BRITISH COLUMBIA | 7 MIN Canoe Cultures is an Indigenous-lead non-profit carving centre based in Vancouver. At the program, Mike Billy Sr. and Jr. transfer knowledge from one generation of Squamish Nation War Canoe builders to the next. In this short film they both share their experiences of passing and receiving the torch and the future they imagine that keeping this legacy alive can bring.

Ajjigiingiluktaaqtugut (We Are All Different) DIR. LINDSAY MCINTYRE, 2021, CA | 17 MIN What does it mean to be Inuk? McIntyre constructs an animated documentary in an exploration of identity and belonging by Inuit, both in and outside of the community. Herself of mixed Inuk and settler heritage, McIntyre depicts the value of community and asks what it means to belong in a changing world when our ideas of Inuk-ness are so tied to particular representations.

Jewel Davies explores the mission and history of "How We Walk with the Land & Water", an initiative developed collectively by the Carcross/Tagish First Nation, the Kwanlin Dün First Nation, and the Ta'an Kwäch'än Council, in 2017. The initiative is guided by Elders focused on indigenizing methods of land-planning, by gathering Traditional Knowledge, stories, and scientific data to help inform a new and sustainable land relationship plan.

What does it mean to be Inuk? Historically depicted as welcoming and friendly people in remote snowy landscapes, in reality, Inuit live across the globe. Using antique wind-up bears, layered animation, and analogue techniques, McIntyre constructs an animated documentary in an exploration of identity and belonging by Inuit, both in and outside of the community. Herself of mixed Inuk and settler heritage, McIntyre depicts the value of community and asks what it means to belong in a changing world when our ideas of Inuk-ness are so tied to particular representations.
In "Hebron Relocation", Holly Andersen explores what makes a place a home as she learns more about her community’s connection to generations of displaced northern Labrador Inuit.

Told from her perspective, Sâkowêw’s story of giving birth lays bare the anti-Indigenous racism entrenched in health systems across Canada. Through intimate conversations with family and harrowing experiences at the local health centre, the film plunges audiences headlong into the deep impacts of colonialism, poor communication, and personal biases that Indigenous communities face. As the only international reporters who remain in the city as Russian forces close in, they capture–what has become–some of the most defining images of the war: dying children, mass graves, the bombing of a maternity hospital, and more. After nearly a decade covering international conflicts, including the Russia-Ukraine war for The Associated Press, Mstyslav Chernov makes his feature film debut with 20 Days in Mariupol. Carpenter Khaleel Seivwright builds small, life-saving shelters for unhoused people living outside in Toronto during the winter of the pandemic. His actions attract international attention, but also staunch opposition from city officials. In the summer of 2021, Khaleel Seivwright, decided to build tiny homes for Toronto’s homeless population. Soon afterwards, the city told him that he wasn’t allowed to place them in city parks, citing safety issues, despite a lack of available shelter beds. Someone Lives Here, which won the Audience Award for Best Canadian Documentary at Hot Docs 2023, is deftly told by first-time documentarian Zack Russell, who captures this Kafkaesque story in a humane and empathetic way. We see how people living in the tiny homes were harassed by some members of the public who were worried they would bring down the area’s property values. Police-enforced evictions reach a dramatic climax as organizers in favor of the tiny homes lock arms in the face of violence and arrests. An important story for our time, as housing insecurity across Canada reaches new heights and people look to find solutions in the face of bureaucratic roadblocks.

The narrative at the heart of We Are Guardians is powerful — a story of hope and resilience amidst an unfolding crisis.
