INCEPTION

Studio II 2022 Instructor: Desmond Johnson

How can we seamlessly weave two-dimensional and three-dimensional spaces within a compact canvas?

A project taking its roots from a local farm, with the main goal of creating an environment where visitors can unwind in nature and pay tribute to the region that played a pivotal role in the origins of Black America and American cuisine. The charming slanted roofs in the cottage designs draw inspiration from the architectural style of southern African-American traditions; interior spaces are crafted carefully to offer visitors the best possible natural experiences on the site.

The single-occupancy cottage features a loft design aimed at maximizing space.

Upon entering, a small kitchen sets the tone, leading to a glass-enclosed living room. As one moves through the space, natural light gradually infuses the living area, creating an immersive experience close to nature.

The double-occupancy cottage follows a similar layout. However, to optimize space and potentially accommodate guests, the kitchen and living room are adjacent, with the stairs to the loft bedroom positioned near the entrance to ensure enhanced privacy.

Studio III 2022 Instructor: Marisabel Marrat Collaborators: Ansley Boutwell, Kylie Hossom How do the integrated elements of form and space allocation contribute to a building’s cohesive connection and responsive interaction with the surrounding landscape?

The designated project site is situated on a hill in Rocinha, Rio, where the building aims to serve as a focal point for the local community to convene for communal endeavors. Simultaneously, it aspires to educate visitors about the rich cultural tapestry and the essence of daily life in Rio. The design draws its inspiration from the exemplars of Art Nouveau, which capture the inherent splendor of organic elements flowing without restraint.

DESIGN PATTERN PROGRESSION

The design process commenced with a comprehensive analysis of the prominent attributes inherent in Art Nouveau architecture and visual representations. Key curvilinear elements were distilled from these historical precedents and subsequently reimagined to yield distinctive patterns. This iterative process led to the layering of two-dimensional screen sheets, a deliberate endeavor aimed at investigating the interplay of shadows and spatial configurations within a three-dimensional context.

Ultimately, after meticulous evaluation, the chosen design, positioned on the right-hand side, embodies an organic and seamless progression, harmonizing with the innate aesthetic allure intrinsic to the Art Nouveau style.

The chosen site, situated on a hill, inspired the incorporation of a gentle warp within the screens, a design strategy aimed at seamlessly integrating the building with the undulating terrain. This architectural decision not only results in captivating interior spaces but also facilitates a harmonious coexistence between the structure and its environment.

This design choice also pays homage to the inherent principles of Art Nouveau, wherein the symbiotic relationship between nature and fluidity is harnessed for compositional purposes.

Reception

How can the strategic juxtaposition of expansive spaces be achieved, while ensuring clarity and comfort through thoughtful differentiation?

A community center situated in the Sweet Auburn district of downtown Atlanta, renowned for its profound African-American heritage. The primary focus of the design revolves around the establishment of a spacious dance studio on the ground floor, dedicated to the dissemination and celebration of African dance culture. Additionally, the facility encompasses a variety of amenities on its remaining floors, intended to foster social interaction and facilitate gatherings within the community.

The foundational design of the building was conceived by integrating a prominent curved element onto a cubic framework, a design choice crafted to emulate the fluid and circular gestures characteristic of African American dance forms.

The two exterior stairs strategically separate the building’s functions. Visitors not here for dance can access the cafe, second-floor courtyard, and rooftop directly. For those interested in dance facilities or choosing to access the building from within, clear internal circulation is facilitated through elevators and open spaces on each floor. Changes in materiality and slight floor height differences distinguish the spatial functions while maintaining an open and welcoming atmosphere.

Studio VI 2023 Instructor: Andrew Bruno

How does the design process shift when exclusively focused on organizing interior spaces, allowing the external form to naturally evolve?

A residential complex providing four individuals with private living spaces, complemented by a public self-run botanical garden, which can accommodate visiting groups. The design of the house took on the irregularity of putting together predefined rooms of a collection of 20th-century kit-of-part houses to explore design options. Rooms from the different predesigned houses were used as blocks, extruded from the floor to the roof, resulting in the distinct irregularity of the roof design.

The defining design feature of the Blossom is its separation of private and public spaces. The Botanical garden is semi-enclosed by the rooms as a backyard to the house, with an outdoor entrance at the center of the house, defined by a gap between two units. The botanical garden is separated from the living spaces of the owners with long wide back porches acting as a buffer zone between the public and the private.

Each of the four units has its own entrance facing the entering road. Upon entering, a living room, kitchen, dining room, and an exit to the back porch. The bedrooms are on the second floor, which creates more isolated spaces.

SYNTHESIS Studio V 2023 Instructor: Hazem Ziada

How can a specific function or section of a building be prominently emphasized, both in plan and within the three-dimensional realm?

The Lake Myvatn Area is characterized pseudo craters and vibrant bird life by the waters. The vision is to provide an experience of what the phenomenal site offers without disturbing its natural beauty. A central tower is rotated towards the view and the incoming road, placing itself at the foreground of what visitors see as they approach the site. Rotated, terraced platforms invite visitors to embrace open spaces and connect with the environment, while setting apart that experience from other private services of the building.

Studio I 2021 Instructor: Charles Rudolph How to fabricate a three-dimensional design from its two dimensional counterpart?

The project delves into the abstraction of fundamental geometric elements, including point, line, and plane, within both two and three dimensions. Drawings of such elements were synthesized from photographs to create a complex and refined abstract design. The final stage encompassed the realization of a threedimensional paper model, meticulously assembled without the aid of adhesive materials, thereby showcasing a holistic manifestation of the project’s artistic vision.

Drawing on Nature 2023 Instructor: Lane Duncan Upon deeper investigation following an unexpected revelation, how can drawings be strategically employed to articulate both the narrative of discovery and its consequential outcomes?

Orienting from a serendipitous observations, the project delves into the intricate relationship between the reproduction of jack pine cones and the pivotal role of fire in facilitating seed release, exploring the synergy between natural elements through a visual and conceptual exploration.

The investigation commenced with a series of nature drawings. Subsequent research revealed a previously unknown characteristic of pine cones: the existence of both male and female counterparts. My curiosity in the germination process, led to the unexpected discovery of serotinous cones—cones that release their seeds under specific environmental conditions, notably heat, with Jack Pines serving as a primary example.

Studio II 2022 | Personal Project 2021 How can line work effectively portray objects and convey a sense of motion?

Drawings of a motion analysis of a rotary egg beater and an ink drawing of the “Shi Ji Zhong” in Tianjin, China. These drawings serve to showcase not only a passion for the arts but also the capacity to keenly observe and effectively translate thoughts onto paper.

Goals Goals for the design case should aim to reduce the indoor illumin`vvance, maintain daylight availability near 100%, reduce ASE and Glare, and maintain the solar radiation levels (due to the location’s proximity to the north pole, there is very little sunlight available in the winter.

During the months from November to February, Iceland gets an average of 4-5 hours of sunlight per day, thus it would be near impossible to gain a decent amount of solar radiation in the winter).

how does small design decisions impact the greater world?

Baseline: The project is a beer spa locatted near Myvatn Lake in Iceland, a site known for its incredible natural beauty. The chosen space for modeling is a 375 square feet indoor relaxation lounge for the beer spa. The room has large windows on the West and South facade, with the roof extending over the windows as an awning on the North (1.5m) and East (2m) side.

Design Case: Overhangs are reduced to 50cm and windows on the Eastern elevation is removed. New windows are added on the Southen elevation with the window sill at 120 cm and a 1m wide light shelf on the inner side of the window, 2m above the floor.

Assumptions: The mean sky cover range of the area is 75%, thus the sky condition chosen for similations is intermediate sky. Large windows are created on North and East facades for optimal view of site.

Conclusion Goals for the design case were successfully met. Although daylighting performance could ideally be improved further, this design is optimal when considering radiation levels. Given the climate in Iceland, maintaining higher solar radiation levels is crucial to minimize energy use for heat production. Instead of using louvers and large overhangs, which significantly reduce indoor solar radiation levels, a light shelf is installed, albeit with a compromise on some daylighting performance.
