SITE

During storm surges or the highest tides, waves batter the island from the east and the west, ‘swallowing’ the country. Some Tuvalu residents have been forced to evacuate parts of the country. Tuvalu has become overwhelmed by its plastic waste, besides a large amount of Marine garbage drifting to the coast with the ocean current. The lack of necessary treatment for these garbage made Tuvalu coastal area become a large garbage dump.

Te Namo Lagoon

Tuvalu is the fourth smallest nation in the world with more than 11,000 people. Due to rising sea levels, the habitable zone is shrinking every year, and the population has been largely growing in recent years on the largest island of Fongafale, where people packed in and fighting for space.

Because of the harsh environment and shortage of the materials, it is difficult to create suitable living space for the residents and their stocks. Moreover, the lack of job opportunities also lead to the outflow of the population...

The islands became Britain’s sphere of influence in the late 19th century. Most residents are the local people and trade among islands is not common at that time.

The eastern shoreline of Funafuti Lagoon changed during World War II when the airfield constructed in 1942. The core base of atoll used as filler to create the runway.

The coastal line advanced toward the lagoon side for about 30 meters. More inhabitants moved to Funafuti because of the influence of airport and Funafuti port.

Funafuti residents lived in a serious populated region compared to the outer islands. The flow of population from the outer islands to Funafuti has remarkable increased.

Because of the limited trades with outside, there were few plastic products introduced into the island, the residents still relied on the traditional daily necessities, so the major garbage are paper, metal and glass.

Thanks to the convenience brought by the airport and port, people could use more imported things like plastic, and the number of garbage also increased with living standard growth.

The rapid growth of population and changes of lifestyle has intensified Tuvaluan to rely on imported products. There has been an obvious increase over the amount of every waste.

The amount of plastic had surpassed paper waste, becoming the largest amount of garbage on the island, and the plastic was not only from the daily waste but also from the ocean.

GARBAGE RECEYLE STRATEGY PLASTIC & GLASS CONTAINER FACTORY

Some paper in the factory is made into Tuvaluan stamps which could be sold abroad.

PAPER CONTAINER FACTORY

PAPER CONTAINER FACTORY

METAL CONTAINER FACTORY

The waste metal is sent to the metal container factory to process and reuse.

Use plastic bricks made in plastic container factories to fill the land and increase the land area.

The glass and plastic waste from borrow pits are sent to the factories to be recycled.

ELEVATION OF PLASTIC FACTORY

The site was a dump of the garbage before and waste containers are built there to deal with the main garbage -- Marine plastic along the beach. Moreover, parks are built near the factory and trees are planted to optimize the soil that was damaged by the garbage. In a word, the project beautifies the city and is an additional place for people to relax as well.

SECTION OF PLASTIC FACTORY Built the ocean plastic processed factory with abandoned containers near the port to provide job opportunities for local residents, and plastic bricks which use new technology combined with coral reefs can be used to reclaim land from the sea. It could not only increase the land of Tuvalu, but also make the plastic recycled and protect the island environment.

Shengjiashe, located in the south of Wujiang District, as one of the most prosperous commercial districts before, the industry was based on homemade silk trade. However, With time passing by, the street is no longer the one which is bustling with noise and excitement. In the context of rapid urban development and the process of urban renewal, what will Shengjiashe be like in the future?

01 In ancient times, Shengjiashe was abundant with natural resources especially water. People there relied heavily on the river, and even built their houses along the river for the convenient transportation and life.

02

04

03

05

The residents began to make silks, set up shops in front of their own workshops after they found Shengjiashe was suitable for growing mulberry leaves and raising silkworms. With the silk industry development, the comfortable fabrics and exquisite patterns of silk are gradually known by the public, lots of traders came here to buy high-quality silk, even many Arab traders came here to take the precious silks to Europe and walk on the silk road. The region turned to a thriving commercial market.

In the early 1960s, China was in the early stage of urbanization. The young had poured into cities because of the high income, the old were mostly left in the district. Besides, the traditional industry here had no significant advantage over the modern industry and was gradually being eliminated. Nowadays, with the development of society, the old buildings were no longer suitable for the modern industry mode, and small scale self-employment could not adapt to the mass demand of the market.

06 The contradiction between the traditional old block and modern city nearby is getting large. In order to activate the old street, is it the only way to adapt to the process of modern cities’ development by building lots of modular and high-density buildings?

07 Developers work with government pursue to find out the most suitable scheme to protect original street without changing its historical layout.

08

10

09

11

According to the opinion of residents about the renovation project, learning about what they need and want could help the developers to build a community in the memory of dwellers. In order to optimize the infrastructure in the site, it is essential to combine the old buildings with new modern technology, keep the right balance between the new and the old ones.

Improving the sales mode and space, which could adapt to the big needs of the modern society, and could also preserve the tradition of the sale mode from the ancestors. With the widespread of the Internet, it provides the street a chance to showing its characteristics and bring the silk handicraft workshop and industry back to the public.

12 Inhabitants can organize some special activities in Shengjiashe regularly with the help of the media, which will help the block gain more popularity and attract more visitors.

14

13 There is a silk industrial chain including self-production and self-sale. Using various yards to create silk-making workshop, then the products are sold in shops in every block corner. In the workshops, customers can take part in making silk by themselves, experiencing the whole producing process. Try to create the local specific business mode.

15

16

Not only a series of activities that customers can participate in like making and selling silk, but a display of silk products can be seen in the block with contemporary means, such as fashion show or auction. It could help the block advertise their own brand. If the one who is interested in the clothes while watching the show, they can take it in the nearby stores.

17

18 Traditional courtyards are the best space to experience traditional silk making, and provide the room of drying field, warehouses and stores as well. The market style different from the traditional shop in the middle of the street can avoid the monotony of the space and help the block to adapt to the fast pace of the modern shopping experience.

19 Different kinds of activities during the day and night will be held in front of the exhibition centre . Traditional or modern fashion show could be seen during the day, and a wonderful sightseeing experience on the boat is also provided to enjoy both the show and the block. At night, the boat can turn to be the best viewing spot to watch the performance.

Inconvenient transportation

Waste of land resources

With the rapid urban development of Suzhou, the urban area has spread from old central Gusu district to its surrounding. American planning strategy used in Suzhou industrial park was emphasized to connect major city areas by adopting vehicles design scale instead of human walkable block size. A convenient and non-motorized area is more suitable for most people to choose.
