This booklet contains important information about your waste and recycling service so make sure you keep it handy. It has a magnet so you can hang it on your fridge and includes your collection calendar for 2013/2014. The booklet contains information about your general waste, recycling and garden organics bins, hard waste and bundled branch collections as well as further information to assist you in reducing waste.

Residents who register will receive a wheelie bin with a bright green lid. This bin is for garden organics only and is collected fortnightly on the same day as household garbage, on the alternate week to your recycling bin.

Collection dates for your property are on the front of this guide Council provides a bundled branch collection twice each year. The November/December collection is for bundled branches only. The January–May collection is conducted at the same time as your hard waste collection.

Material is not to be placed out more than one week before the collection date. Materials must be placed out on the naturestrip by the Sunday evening prior to the start of your collection week. Late material will not be collected. If your general garbage is collected from a collection point, this is where your bundled branches will be collected from.

Collection dates for your property are on the front of this guide Council provides a hard waste and metals collection once per year, combined with the January–May collection of bundled branches. Hard waste means domestic items that will not fit in your household garbage bin, including furniture, appliances and household junk. Please note that green waste and steel items are collected by a separate truck.

If your collection has been missed, you must contact the Council on 1300 368 333 within one week of your collection week. Late notification will result in non-collection. If your general garbage is collected from a collection point, that is where your hard waste will be collected from.

Every home has unwanted products stored in the house, garage or garden shed: old cleaning products, left over paint, dead batteries, out-of-date weed killer or used brake fluid. They’re out of sight and out of mind.

Some household products contain chemicals which can be dangerous to children and pets. You can’t pour them down the sink, or put them out with your rubbish because they can harm the environment.

Unwanted Household Goods There are many people who could use your unwanted clean clothing, household furniture, children’s toys, books, sporting goods and bric-a-brac.

Check the phone directory for your nearest charity shop.

Remember that charity shops can only sell goods that are in good condition and working order.

Do not leave items outside a closed charity shop as this could be seen as illegal dumping.

Before taking unwanted items to a charity please call them to check that they can accept your items.

Charity bins You can also place your unwanted saleable goods in a charity bin. Please make sure all goods are placed inside the bin. If the bin is full, save your goods until the bin is empty or take them to a charity shop instead.

Garage Sale Trail The Garage Sale Trail is a national community event which will be held on 26 October 2013. Residents will hold garage sales simultaneously to be sustainable, promote waste reduction, fundraise and create community contacts. Recovery and Waste Transfer Centres within Yarra Ranges

Recovery and Waste Transfer Centres provide a local drop-off point for waste that can’t go into the kerbside bins. These centres help with recovery, reuse and recycling of materials and minimise waste. Residents are requested to separate material to maximise recovery and prevent valuable resources from going to landfill. All material not recovered for recycling will be transported to a landfill for disposal.

How to reduce your cost when using these facilities • Planning a trip to the transfer station? Before you head off, have a look at what you’ve loaded into the boot of your car or onto your trailer. A quick check could save you money, not to mention space in landfill • Are there any items that could be placed in your kerbside recycling bin? Glass bottles, cardboard, or plastic bottles and containers marked with recycling codes from 1 to 7 can be put in your recycling bin • Some items can also be taken to the Recovery and Waste Transfer Centres for free, for example metal items • Carefully loading your trailer so that recyclable items are separate from other waste will help save time and could reduce the cost of your trip • A mixed load of hard waste, recycling, green and other waste which hasn’t been separated unfortunately ends up in landfill • By separating material, recyclables can be easily placed at the appropriate drop-off points at the transfer station • Separating your waste could mean the difference between being charged for a trailer load of rubbish or a car boot load. It’s also better for the environment • Contact each site directly, or refer to their website for what items they will take for free.

Composting and Worm Farms An average household can reduce garbage by up to 25% by composting food scraps and garden waste. Collect your food scraps and use a worm farm, compost bin or bio fermenter to create organic garden fertiliser and soil enhancers—and a more sustainable household.

Worm farms and worms can be purchased at Council’s Community Links.

Compost bins are available at most hardware and gardening stores (as are worm farms and worms).

Food and Shopping • Say no to plastic bags and take reusable bags when you go shopping —or keep a fold up bag or two on hand in your glovebox or handbag • Buy food as you need it and in the quantities you require • Store any extra produce properly to keep it fresher for longer • Pack lunches in reusable containers instead of using cling wrap • Buy products that have less packaging or packaging that is recyclable —or best of all, no packaging • Grow your own vegetables at home—you’ll reduce waste and have fresher produce!

Batteries, Cartridges (Printer/Toner), and Mobile Phones (and chargers) These products can be recycled in non commercial quantities at all of Council’s Community Links (see below). Ring 1300 368 333 for more information.

Cardboard, Metal (including White Goods) and Car Batteries Most Recovery and Waste Transfer Centres take this material for free.

Computers and Televisions A national product stewardship scheme to recycle old televisions and computer equipment has been developed as a joint initiative of the Australian Government, state governments and industry bodies.

The scheme involves drop-off collection sites, equipment disassembly and recycling as well as community education.

Free drop-off is available at Coldstream Recovery and Waste Transfer Station. Refer to page 17 for location and operation hours or check the Recycling Near You website at www.recyclingnearyou.com.au

Sharps Disposal (Syringes) Council provides a free sharps safe disposal service to anyone who uses needles and syringes, such as diabetics, people with a terminal illness or injecting drug users. You can collect and dispose of sharps containers at any Community Link.

It is important for needles and syringes to be disposed of correctly as they present a high risk of injury to others. Never dispose of needles and syringes in your household waste bins, public litter bins, down toilets or drains nor leave them in the environment.

Preventing Litter and Dumped Rubbish

Victorian Councils spend $11 million every year to clean up illegally dumped rubbish and roadside litter (source: Victorian Litter Action Alliance).

Dumped rubbish Contaminants from dumped rubbish leach into the environment, harming native plants and animals. Dumped rubbish is a blight on our stunning landscape and it’s illegal.

If you see dumped rubbish or somebody dumping material contact Council on 1300 368 333 or Environment Protection Authority Victoria (EPA) on 1300 372 842.

Council will investigate and prosecute anyone who is found to have dumped rubbish.

There are many options which are less harmful than dumping your waste.

Council provides two bundled branch collections each year, a hard waste collection and access to several transfer stations for disposal of all types of waste.

Every piece of litter has an impact Much of the litter dropped in Yarra Ranges travels into our waterways through the stormwater system, and ends up in rivers, creeks and eventually our beaches and bays.

Dog droppings contain harmful bacteria and nutrients, and much of this ends up washing into the natural waterways where it upsets the natural balance and can contribute to toxic algae blooms and potential health risks to humans, pets and wildlife.

Five tips for cleaner waterways

Do your bit—put your butts in the bin instead of on the street Cigarette butts are the single largest item of pollution found in our waterways and on our beaches.

Use a rubbish bag in your car.

Rubbish in cars can be kicked out when getting in and out. This litter pollutes our waterways.

Keep the lid down—overfull bins cause litter in our streets All litter on the streets follows the same path—it pollutes our creeks and beaches.

Keep your load off the road— tarp your trailer.

Material not secured on your trailer can blow off and become litter on the roadside.
