USANT Admin Unites To Aid Community Through AKP By: Marinel D. Delatado

T

o commemorate the season of giving, the University of Saint Anthony community worked together to initiate the Alay sa Kapwa Program (AKP) last December 21, 2019 at Brgy. Sto. Niño's Multi purpose hall.

In an interview, Ms. Claudette B. Mora, the overseer of the AKP, mentioned that recipients look forward to this occasion every year as the month of December nears.

"It [Alay sa Kapwa Program] helps strengthen the linkage of the university to the community. It proves that the university is more than just a private institution where profit can be gained, but also an institution where blessing can be shared." Ms. Mora stated.

Ms. Mora also recalled the time when AKP was still done through inviting people within the campus. But due to COVID-19 restrictions, the program has now adapted to the new normal by making its services available "on-wheels".

When asked if similar institutions should adapt similar programs, the AKP overseer replied, "Yes, but I think they should also think of another community project. Say for example, something related to health. Especially that we need active responses to battle the threat of COVID-19."

The whole USANT team was comprised of students, teachers, employees, and even the school administration and other stake holders. Together, they gave away complete sets of grocery items to 50 chosen beneficiaries of different barangays.

13 USANT Girl Scouts Wrap Up CGSMS Projects By: Justine Anne A. Novela

Thirteen Senior Girl Scouts from the University of Saint Anthony - Junior High School Department completed their Chief Girl Scout Medal Scheme (CGSMS) projects after their launching ceremonies last October to November 2019 in their respective communities.

Among the 13 Girl Scouts who gave their service were Sr. GS Jandy L. Daza, Sr. GS Denyle Mae O. Pamonag, Sr. GS Bianca Lorraine B. Corporal, Sr. GS Kathleen Faith T. Baliwag, Sr. GS Kishie Marie A. Monedero, Sr. GS Erika Mae B. Basto, Sr. GS Necole Ashley L. Tuppil, Sr. GS Jazmine Antonia D. Nacario, Sr. GS Jessica Danielle D. Dorosan, Sr. GS Karen Faye S. Bello, Sr. GS Mary Lyn M. Esteve, Sr. GS Aphrodite S. Carumba, and Sr. GS Shynae Lois Dainchynne L. Gamayan.

According to Sr. GS Bianca Lorraine B. Corporal, one of the candidates, as she shares her goal in completing the program, “To those who don’t know this, the Chief Girl Scout Medal Scheme is the highest award a Girl Scout could ever achieve, this is one of the many reasons why I pursued on working. But the main thing why I decided to participate in this scheme is my willingness to help other people especially the chosen community in my barangay”.

She also added that she wants to encourage the other girl scouts like her to take the risk and be one of them (candidates) in making a change in contributing something good to the society.

Senior and Cadet Girl Scouts who meet the requirements for exemplary community service are recognized by this scheme and continues to highlight the girls’ participation in building the nation.

The awarding ceremony for the 2020 CGSMS Medalists will be held virtually for the first time on May 21, 2021 via GSP Facebook Live.

GSP USANT Troop No. 58 - Maogma Steps Up In Second PHLTAW Participation By: Angelica R. Panaligan he Girl Scouts of the Philippines – USANT Troop No. 58 participated for the second time in the Pilar Hidalgo Lim Troop Achievement Award (PHLTAW) from November 17, 2019 to February 9, 2020 as part of an initiative to encourage girl scout troops to help people in the community by having projects for community development.

The scouts conducted a 10-session wellness, literacy, and feeding program at the indigenous people resettlement in San Ramon, Buhi, Camarines Sur. Every session, which also includes a feeding program, tackled literacy programs about handwashing, personal hygiene, hair care, spiritual wellness, Zumba / physical fitness, and social well-being.

GSP USANT’s participation in PHLTAW is one of several community-centered initiatives launched by the said organization.

SNES Welcomes SWA Participants, Conducts 2019 Brigada Eskwela By: John Czeasar H. Borras

Ssct. Jim Kenneth T. Zorilla, a Grade 9 Senior Scout, stated that "Through our Scouts of the World Award journey, we learned new skills including teamwork, project planning, time management and also an improvement in our communication capabilities. By participating in this project, we gained an understanding of global issues and international relations as well."

Boy Scouts of the Philippines Outfit No. 72 — USANT Chapter took part in the 2019 Brigada Eskwela, held on May 22, 2019, at Sto. Niño Elementary School, as a part of fulfilling the participant's requirements for the Scouts of the World Award (SWA).

Participants helped the school prepare for the upcoming school year by cleaning and assisting in preparing the classrooms and other facilities.

In preparation for this project, different cleaning materials were put together to for use as equipment during the activity. Sctr.

Roy C. Saberdo, the Outfit Adviser, together with the Executives of the Outfit, led the Scouts to the venue, where they reached the school at 7:15 AM. Each Scout was designated to a specific crew, in which all groups are obligated to accomplish their assigned task.

Crews were separated following the task that they are designated to. They cleaned the campus, mostly removing the leaves that had been growing since the end of last school year.

At 10:15 AM, the Clean-Up Drive came to an end. Participants were gathered once again to rest and take their snacks after the activity. The faculty heads and members of the school expressed their gratitude to the Scouts, supervising officers, and the Outfit Adviser.

V.S. Matt Andrew M. Celebrado, the Grand Senior Crew Leader, guided the participants in their departure at the said venue.

They headed back to the University of Saint Anthony Campus to tackle other obligations and requirements, reaching the institution at 11:00 AM. A benediction was executed to formally close the activity.

USANT T.L.E Department Collaborates with Sto. Niño for Dagdag Kabuhayan By: Francis Cenon E. Elevado

o encourage communities to take up new skills that can be used as sources of livelihood, the Technology and Livelihood Education (T.L.E) Department of the University of Saint Anthony – Junior High School (USANT JHS) hosted the “Dagdag Kabuhayan Program” last August 3, 2019 at the Multi-Purpose Hall of Sto. Nino, Iriga City.

One of the highlights of the event was the siomai-making demonstration conducted by USANT JHS T.L.E teachers such as Mr. Robert Villanueva, Ms. Marybeth Joyce Cuachin, and Mrs. Mey S. Oliva.

The demonstration saw a turnout of 15 to 20 housewives who were present during the event.

According to Mr. Roy C. Saberdo, the goal of the project is to “help the community become more productive by teaching them a simple recipe but in return, will produce a nice investment to gain profit but less capital, to share one’s own expertise in cooking or in your own field of specialization that can be used in business purposes, and lastly, so that families will not become dependent to the government.”

Saberdo further stated that the long-term impact on how the participants will handle their livelihood will depend upon the acceptance of adaptability of the livelihood project in the community.

When asked about how they came up with the idea of this project, Saberdo replied, “As a person aligned with baking/cooking, they came up with this project through conducting some research on different recipes.

By this, the product/recipes can be adopted by the community in making delicious foods that has nutritive value but less expensive.”

The program is one of several projects initiated by the USANT JHS in Sto. Nino, which is the adopted barangay of the University.

USANT JHS Inaugurates Reading Remediation Program By: Mary Lorelie A. Potencio

As part of an initiative to bring quality education outside the school campus, the Reading Remediation Program for the Students of Sto. Nino National High School in Sto. Nino, Iriga City was instated last August 3, 2019 by the University of Saint Anthony – Junior High School Department (USANT JHS).

According to Community Extension Coordinator Ms. Claudette May B. Mora in an interview conducted recently, Barangay Sto. Nino was chosen to be the venue of the Reading Remediation Program because, according to her, “it is the adopted barangay [of USANT].”

“The main objective of the program is to help and assist students who are challenged in their reading and comprehension skills, so that they become independent learners as they finish their basic education,” Mora stated.

Mora emphasized how the Phil-IRI was central in conceptualizing the program, stating that, “According to the results of the Phil-IRI Reading Test, there are students who are challenged in their reading and comprehension skills,” adding that USANT JHS coordinated with the principal of SNNHS to identify the learners who need assistance in reading and comprehension.

The program was conceptualized through an analysis that aimed to identify the present needs of the

barangay. “An analysis is done to know why a certain barangay deserves our support and assistance. The needs of the barangay or place is analyzed. For example, if the barangay needs livelihood or the school in that barangay needs a feeding program or reading remediation program,” Mora explained.

When asked about the challenges that were faced by USANT JHS in running the program, Mora explained that one of the main struggles of the program was the compressed time allotted for the lesson, given that the remedial lessons were held only on Saturdays and that some learners need more time to learn the lesson.

The subject teachers of USANT JHS adopted several strategies when teaching the students of SNES include interactive teaching, the use of advanced instructional materials, and technology integration, according to Mora.

All the departments of USANT JHS were assigned to conduct remedial lessons every Saturday from August 3 to 31, 2019.

he University of Saint Anthony has been fuelled by the promise of serving Iriga City since its inception in 1947 as a night high school that was established to provide education to Irigueños whose schooling was disturbed by the Second World War. This is evident in one of the lines of the USANT hymn, which says “we shall serve where we stand. This mission is also put to practice through the University’s community extension services.

USANT’s community extension activities allow an avenue for students and teachers to gain real-world educational experience. One of such activities was the Dagdag Karunungan Program, where students from the USANT Junior High School Department ventured to Barangay Sto. Niño, Iriga City to teach the grade seven students of Sto. Niño National High School (SNNHS) during the weekends. With the assistance of their subject teachers, the students demonstrate their teaching skills by preparing comprehensive lessons and fun-filled activities that were designed to engage the students from SNHHS.

Activities similar to the program are a testament to the Anthonian promise of providing education that extends outside

the classroom, one that will not only help prepare students for real-life challenges and responsibilities, but also deliver quality education outside the campus.

Community extension services have benefits that impact students, teachers and the people from the receiving end positively. These services are also an excellent way of reaching out to the far-flung areas of the city, such as Sto. Niño, where similar services are hard to come by.

For students, community extension is a window to gaining real-life experiences. Students who volunteer to be part of community extension programs are offered a chance to apply the concepts they learned inside the classroom to real-life situations. This is a good avenue for one to develop practical skills such as leadership and critical thinking and practice them for real. Most importantly, community extension programs are a chance to give back to the community and helps foster a sense of solidarity.

service is a part of a web that interconnects the people of a large community.

For Anthonians, this kind of experience will help them uphold the Anthonian legacy of serving the city and the country.

Providing opportunities that will help the Irigueño community is part of USANT’s promise, the same promise that allowed it into the University it is today.

For the last 74 years, the University of Saint Anthony has been offering quality and affordable education to students from Iriga City and its neighboring towns. Being the first university founded in the city, it has played an enormous role in making Iriguenos competitive globally. USANT was founded in 1947, during the postwar period. Amidst the shortage our country experienced, education needed to continue. It was born out of the ashes of global hostilities and it was built in the ruins and rubbles of the Second World War.

The school has continued to grow, from high school night classes of only 131 students and 8 teaching staff, it then began to offer collegiate courses and intermediate level classes. More courses leading to degrees like Bachelor of Science in Education, Bachelor of Arts, Bachelor of Science in Elementary Education, Elementary Teacher Certificate in Home Economics, and Bachelor of Science

in Economics opened simultaneously, then summer classes followed after a few years. The night high school was then opened for those working students. It continued to grow from a small high school to a university, molding generations with excellence.

As one of the well-established Universities in the Bicol region, it continues to expand its borders in all aspects.

Serving as one of the trusted schools in the Iriga community when it comes to quality education, it offers students the opportunity to grow their moral, financial, spiritual, cultural, and productive potentials in a democratic society that recognizes an individual‘s rights and value.

The University has not just contributed to Iriga and the Bicol Region but also the world. It has made great individuals in different fields who knows not just facts but also how the world works. They were not just taught about memorization of terms and formulas but also how they could bring it outside the gates of the campus and share it with the public.

Time indeed shaped the University, but resilience and passion were some of the factors that polished and established its name for the public. From the facilities, educational advancement, and scholarship programs, it continues to bring more options and light to the people in our community.
