A message from our ceo

YOUTH VILLAGES BEGAN 30 YEARS AGO AS A SMALL IDEA i was tasked to manage a failing residential center, and to some, I was there just to slowly close the facility.

But I saw value there. I saw an opportunity. I knew the job would be daunting, but with some dedication and a motivation to help children, the task could be completed.

That was Dogwood Village 30 years ago, and today, we’ve grown more than I ever imagined we would.

To say Youth Villages wouldn’t be what it is today without your help is an understatement. It’s so much more. Your devotion to our cause is what keeps us looking for ways to help more children and grow to help more children in more states.

And thanks to you, we’re poised to be able to achieve our ambitious goals.

In this issue of New Heights, read how much of a difference our volunteers and corporate partners make in the lives of children receiving our help.

From sprucing up our group homes to spending time with youth participating in our programs, your tireless devotion to our mission makes a huge difference in the lives of the children we help.

It’s not unnoticed by Youth Villages or the children.

To me, it’s the true core of what makes Youth Villages great, and it’s the best way to show youth in our programs that the community cares.

YVLifeSet™ success Aisha (Khaniya), 19, is gearing up for her future.

AISHA LEARNS TO ADVOCATE FOR HERSELF AND HER FUTURE Aisha, 19, feels like she missed out on childhood. At age 12, she was cooking, doing the laundry and getting her younger siblings ready for school.

“Aisha didn’t have an easy upbringing,” said Christal Baker, a Youth Villages YVLifeSet™ specialist. “Her father was abusive and always in jail. Her mother was never home and neglected the kids. Aisha was frustrated.”

Aisha’s frustration turned into anxiety and depression. She became aggressive and started getting into fights at school.

Her anger spiraled until she threatened her mother’s life.

“I used to act out because I wanted my

mom’s attention,” Aisha said. “I just wanted her to listen. Or look at me. Anything.”

Aisha was expelled from two schools for aggression and entered state custody.

Her longest stay with a foster family was three days due to her difficult behavior.

She was in and out of group homes until she ended up in residential therapy.

“My family never came to visit me at therapy, and my counselor was the only person I spoke to,” Aisha said. “I learned a lot about anger management, but I was still lonely and depressed.”

When Aisha discharged from treatment, she was unemployed, spending time with negative peers and lacked

stable housing. But things took a turn when she received an unexpected message from a family member.

“Aisha’s grandmother reached out to her,” Christal said. “They hadn’t spoken in years, but she offered Aisha a place to live. It was exactly what she needed for a fresh start.”

Aisha moved in with her grandmother and entered the YVLifeSet™ program, which offers support for young people transitioning into adulthood. She met her specialist, Christal, with whom she created a close bond. They worked through Aisha’s past trauma and continued to practice anger management skills.

“Christal helped me learn to advocate for myself in a respectful way,” Aisha said. “Instead of letting others control my emotions and behavior, I protect myself with new coping skills. If I want to reach my goals, I have to keep myself out of trouble.”

When Aisha gets mad, she reads, crochets and listens to music in her room.

She communicates with her grandmother and even her mother while remaining calm. With consistent support, Aisha set high goals to gain control of her mental health, finish high school and apply for college. She found a stable job and opened a savings account to save for a car. Aisha will graduate high school this year and hopes to enroll at Nashville State Community College this summer.

“I want to study social work to help young people like myself,” Aisha said.

“Thanks to my grandmother and Youth Villages, I’m on a completely different path than I was before. I’m confident in myself and excited for college.”

SANDRA’S POSITIVITY OUTSHINES HER DIFFICULT PAST Kristen Jervis’ days are busy meeting with young people in Youth Villages’ YVLifeSet™ program, helping them transition successfully into adulthood. “Each hour spent working with my youth is rewarding, no matter what obstacles we’re up against,” Kristen said. “But when it comes time to meet with Sandra, I know I don’t have anything to worry about.”

Being responsible comes naturally to Sandra. When she receives stipends from the YVLifeSet™ program and extended foster care, she deposits them into her savings.

Whenever her schedule permits, she looks for opportunities to serve her community.

“If Sandra has car trouble or an unexpected expense, we don’t enter crisis mode,” Kristen said. “She has always been great about budgeting and

prioritizing what is important to her.”

Sandra’s professional goal is to become a nurse. An academic advisor at Tennessee Technological University told her to keep her grades up and gain clinical experience.

“Before the day was over, Sandra had found a temporary certified nursing assistant program at a local nursing home,” Kristen said.

She studies and attends class during the week and works on the weekends. “Sandra is caring, empathetic and proactive,” Kristen noted. “I have

always admired her positivity despite her difficult past.”

When Sandra became involved with Youth Villages, she lacked emotional and physical support. Her parents emigrated from Guatemala 24 years ago. They didn’t know much English and needed Sandra’s help raising her four younger siblings.

“I’ve always been a hard worker,” Sandra said. “I value serving my community and living as an independent female. Kristen helped me have the strength to do these things on my own.”

Sandra’s father abused her and her sisters when she was young. When she came forth with what had happened, she lost all family support and entered foster care. “Throughout years of emotional court dates, I have been so thankful for the Youth Villages office,” Sandra said. “It is a safe and happy place, and when I am here, I feel inspired to move forward and do my best.”

Sandra is a sophomore in college, was accepted into the YV Scholars program and is looking forward to completing her degree. “I have never known anyone as driven to reach her goals as Sandra is,” Kristen said. “She will be a fabulous nurse one day!”

COMPANY PARTNER SPOTLIGHT: DELL, INC. More than 115 volunteers from Dell, Inc.’s Nashville facility helped Youth Villages during the summer. From resume workshops to gardening, and basketball to interior remodeling, Dell continues to be one of Youth Villages’ strongest corporate partners in Middle Tennessee. Dell volunteers also organized the annual battle of the group homes, which is a photography contest including an intro to photography, a photography scavenger hunt and a photo editing workshop. Each home then submits their top five photos in the photography contest judged by a panel of Dell volunteers. This year, the

Tallwood Group Home for 16-17-year old boys won the contest.

Dell also donated brand-new desktop computers to the three Nashville group homes. These computers are a huge benefit to our teenage youth who will be able to use the desktops for their schoolwork and tutoring sessions.

Youth Villages held its annual volunteer appreciation to recognize the great work our corporate and community volunteers do for the children we serve throughout the year.

We celebrated this year’s event at Tennessee Brew Works where guests enjoyed food, beverages and private brewery tours. The highlight of the event was hearing from one of our local YVLifeSet™ participants, Jennifer Rhodes, who is also a YV Scholar and shared how the program has impacted her life.

TechnologyAdvice received the Corporate Volunteerism Award at Hands On Nashville’s Mary Catherine Strobel Awards for its tremendous support of the local young people Youth Villages serves.

During the last four years, TechnologyAdvice has donated nearly 3,000 volunteer hours to Youth Villages, along with professional services and financial resources. Every year, they provide school supplies, holiday gifts and books for young people in Youth Villages’ programs. In addition, they also help with facility improvements at our Nashville group homes.

The Mary Catherine Strobel Awards are Nashville’s largest celebration of volunteerism in our community.

THE 5TH ANNUAL VANDERBILT MBA GOLF CLASSIC The 5th annual Vanderbilt MBA Golf Classic was held on May 5 at the Vanderbilt Legends Club to benefit Youth Villages’ YVLifeSet™ program. Every year, Youth Villages partners with the Owen Graduate School of Management at Vanderbilt University to host the annual golf classic to engage student, alumni and corporate teams in an event that benefits the local youth we serve who age out of foster care.

This past year, the event raised more than $28,000 for our YVLifeSet™ program in Middle Tennessee.

YVLifeSet™ helps youth aging out of state custody develop the independent living skills needed to become an independent adult.

DRESS FOR SUCCESS WITH BANANA REPUBLIC FACTORY STORE The Banana Republic Factory Store in Opry Mills recently organized a dress for success workshop for girls at Youth Villages’ Wallace Group Home. The workshop showed the girls how to dress for a job interview, taught them about working in retail and the process for submitting an online job application.

GROUP HOME FIELD DAY WITH LBMC More than 40 volunteers from the Young Professional group at LBMC recently organized a field day for young people at Youth Villages’ Nashville group homes that included events like cornhole, can jam, water-balloon toss, three-legged race and tug-of-war. In addition, youth were treated to a barbecue lunch. Youth Villages Nashville appreciates all the hard work from the fantastic LBMC volunteers for putting it on for our youth during their summer break.

HCA AT TALLWOOD A group of HCA interns volunteered to stain and seal the backyard deck and front porch of Youth Villages’ Tallwood Group Home.

SARAH CANNON CANCER RESEARCH CENTER Volunteers from the Sarah Cannon Cancer Research Center recently volunteered at Youth Villages’ Tallwood Group Home on one of the hottest days this summer to put together patio furniture they donated. They also painted the computer lab in the group home.

Backpack heroes BACKPACK HEROES WAS A HUGE SUCCESS THIS YEAR! This year, we supplied new backpacks filled with school supplies to almost 900 children in Middle Tennessee. Holiday heroes BE A HOLIDAY HERO FOR A CHILD WE SERVE IN MIDDLE TENNESSEE

HOLIDAY HEROES This year, Youth Villages will have over 1,400 children and families who desperately need someone to become their Holiday Hero. As a Holiday Hero, you can make sure the children receiving help at Youth Villages get the joy of receiving a gift for the holidays.

The Holiday Heroes program works as follows: 1. Each child we serve fills out a wish list of at least three gifts.

2. We send these wish lists to all of our heroes (volunteer sponsors).

3. Heroes fulfill the wish lists by shopping for the top three items for that child.

4. We ask the heroes to spend $75-$100 per child and to please try their best to fill their top three wishes if possible.

Holiday Heroes are needed to ensure we can provide gifts to all Youth Villages’ local youth in need during the holidays.

5. Please make sure that all of the gifts are new and unopened as well as unwrapped and bagged together in a clear trash sack with a copy of the child’s wish list inside.

6. Please deliver the gifts to the Nashville office (3310 Perimeter Hill Dr., Nashville TN, 37211) by Monday, Dec. 5.

TITAN UP!

The Tennessee Titans invited the boys from our Tallwood and Binkley group homes in Nashville to one of their training camps during the preseason.

The boys enjoyed watching the players practice and were overjoyed to receive complimentary gear. They also loved the chance to meet several of the players and get autographs. Everyone was especially excited to meet Quarterback Marcus Mariota.

Thank you to the entire Tennessee Titans organization for giving our boys this experience they will never forget!

BRIDGESTONE AMERICAS HOSTS CAREER DAY FOR YVLIFESET™ Young adults in Youth Villages’ YVLifeSet™ program recently took part in a career workshop hosted by Bridgestone Americas. After a tour of the facility, youth participated in résumé-building classes, mock job interviews and how-to-dress professionally workshops. In addition, Bridgestone employees shared their personal stories with the youth. This is a great event that teaches our young people who are actively seeking employment how to get a job and keep that job. THE BIG PAYBACK In May, Youth Villages participated in The Big Payback, raising more than $3,000 to provide enrichment opportunities for Youth Villages’ three Nashville group homes. Thank you to everyone who supported Youth Villages during The Big Payback and helped Youth Villages start a sewing club to teach our teens a new lifeskill. Be on the lookout for The Big Payback in May 2017. The Big Payback is a community-wide, 24-hour online giving challenge hosted by The Community Foundation of Middle Tennessee to help raise funds and awareness for Middle Tennessee nonprofits.

One year ago, musician Steven Tyler launched Janie’s Fund.

Janie’s Fund raises money and awareness to help Youth Villages provide trauma-informed care and experiential therapy to girls who have histories of being abused and/or neglected.

Tyler’s hit song “Janie’s Got a Gun,” originally released Nov. 8, 1989, was born out of a growing desire to speak up for victims of child abuse. It’s estimated that each year, one in five girls in the United States experiences sexual abuse.

“As a father and grandfather, I want to focus my energy on things that really matter and leave behind something else in this crazy world along with my music,” Tyler said. “I am starting Janie’s Fund to give a voice to the millions of victims who haven’t had one and encourage everyone to join me on this mission.”

HEATHER NEISEN Heather manages all aspects of administration, human resources and company culture at TechnologyAdvice. She oversees recruitment, benefits, policy creation, disciplinary processes and more. Heather was the architect of the company’s internship program and led recruitment and onboarding through a 16-month growth period that saw TA double in size. Under her leadership, the company was named to the Tennessean’s “Top Places to Work” in 2015 and 2016.

Before TA, Heather spent seven years working in higher education as a manager of on-campus residential life programs, which included hiring, training and supervising teams of RAs, and serving as a judicial hearing officer. She is a Belmont University alumna and holds a master’s degree in education from the University of Kansas.

She recently earned her PHR certification through SHRM. Outside of work, Heather is a new mom, loves traveling and running, serves on the welcoming team at her church and is a member of the Young Alumni Council at Belmont University.
