A MESSAGE FROM THE EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR Dear Friends, Last year was a remarkable year full of life-changing opportunities, made possible due to the support of our partners and supporters. We take pride in our accomplishments, particularly in the year 2022.

Through our evidence-based programs and services each year, Youth Outreach Services (YOS) empowers between 2,000-3,000 youth across Chicago and the surrounding communities with the skills necessary to overcome adversity, develop resilience and optimism, and prepare for their future. We also provide access to opportunities that reduce barriers to achieving their potential.

Given the impact of COVID and the persisting economic challenges in FY22, it was evident that the programs and wraparound services YOS provides to youth were more necessary than ever before.

Despite the challenges, our staff were reinvigorated and dedicated to providing services to our communities. They collaborated with more than 2,500 young people to help them transform their lives and positively impact their schools, families, and communities.

As we move forward, our mission will continue to guide us as we expand our services and reach even more young people. Our primary objective is to help youth stay in school, away from substance use, find secure homes, and make positive choices. YOS is a leader in our communities, providing crisis and youth and family counseling, substance use prevention education services, and housing for those experiencing homelessness.

YOS remains an independent non-profit for all grants and fundraising purposes. We will continue to depend on the support of those in our communities to partner with us and guarantee that our youth have access to these essential and life-changing services. As we look ahead, we will continue to provide new and safe opportunities to youth, celebrate their milestones, and help them achieve their future goals.

Lastly, I would like to express my gratitude to all our donors and stakeholders who have continued to support YOS's mission. With your partnership, support, and guidance, we can meet the needs of the youth and families we serve. About Us Youth Outreach Services (YOS) is dedicated to caring for youth in and around Chicago, inspiring positive development in their lives, families, and communities. Founded in 1959, YOS serves between 2,000-3,000 youth and their families each year through a wide variety of prevention, counseling, juvenile justice, and child welfare services. We believe all kids are capable of excellence and are committed to providing the community-based support they need to overcome challenges and succeed.

Our Mission Youth Outreach Services promotes the strengths and abilities of youth and families by providing community-based services that empower and enrich each to face life’s challenges with confidence, competence and dignity.

YOS Comprehensive Services PREVENTION At YOS, we offer a range of Prevention Services aimed at empowering youth and their families to make informed decisions and achieve positive outcomes. Our programs are designed to equip young individuals with essential skills, opportunities, and recognition that enable them to lead fulfilling lives. These services cover a wide range of areas, including substance abuse prevention, communication and leadership development, career guidance, and conflict resolution. Our goal is to help our youth and families develop a strong foundation that supports their personal and professional growth.

COUNSELING YOS offers a comprehensive counseling program that is designed to assist young people in overcoming various obstacles and making positive changes in their lives. Our counseling services are aimed at helping youth tackle issues that could potentially lead to addiction, such as low self-esteem, drug and alcohol abuse, involvement in gangs, poor academic performance, delinquency, and family conflicts. Our team of experienced counselors work closely with each individual to develop personalized strategies that address their unique needs and help them lead healthier and more fulfilling lives.

JUVENILE JUSTICE YOS offers Juvenile Justice Services to prevent young people from entering the child welfare and juvenile justice systems. Our primary goal is to address the obstacles that prevent their future success. We provide alternatives to detention, services to youth awaiting court, and support for youth reentering the community. Our highly structured programs offer a diversion from negative influences and provide alternatives to detention while contributing to public safety.

CHILD WELFARE YOS's Child Welfare Services aim to maintain the safety and well-being of children and their families. We strive to keep families united by providing assistance and education to those who are at risk of separation. Our program assists children in preparing for independence while residing in secure and stable homes. In situations where children's safety is compromised in their biological homes, we connect them with caring foster families and provide them with necessary life skills training to transition into adulthood.

A Year in Review

Still Adapting to a New Normal

In Fiscal Year 2022, Youth Outreach Services served 2,491 clients while still under COVID-19 pandemic restrictions, limiting our ability to do onsite services and having staffing shortages.

Corporate Partner Spotlight Adopt-A-Room Transformation

At YOS, we believe that making office spaces visually appealing could have a significant impact on our clients and staff. We invited companies to "adopt" one of our office spaces to redecorate it using their creativity, workforce, and time.

Check out the before and after photos.

With some colorful contemporary furniture and art, those spaces now offer our youth a sense of tranquility and a safe haven to connect with their therapists.

With the recent help from Mazars, a local Chicago-based company, YOS transformed five therapy rooms from dull to beautiful, and the difference was remarkable! Our clients and staff were WOW’d by the difference.

MAKE MONDAYS MATTER In the Fall of 2022, UIC students had the opportunity to volunteer and give back to their community on the first Monday of every month by partnering with various campus organizations. This service opportunity benefited students who faced time constraints or lacked resources for other service forms.

In November, YOS was chosen to receive 75 snack packs for their clients, consisting of drinks, pop tarts, chips, and candy.

These snack packs were put together in a UIC tote bag with handwritten notes. The UIC Basketball team and other students from UIC participated in the event during the afternoon. Ashley Luptak, the Director of Development, was also present to discuss YOS and the services they provide.

“The best part of One Summer Chicago was learning how to facilitate a racial healing circle with wonderful peers and amazing facilitators."

Visions for 2022 During the winter of 2022, many young people were still struggling to cope with the changes brought on by the COVID-19 pandemic. Their schools and daily routines were disrupted, so they found adapting to the new and uncertain world around them challenging. Looking towards the future seemed daunting as they couldn't imagine when things would return to normal.

Counselors used vision boards to encourage communication, goal setting, and exploring various aspects of one's identity and interests.

Research suggested that vision boards helped individuals gain self-awareness, self-reflect, and reach their goals more efficiently. By using vision boards, youths identified and discussed their educational and career aspirations, leading to a deeper understanding of what was important to them.

Vision boards were a tool that allowed young people to visualize their success and imagine a positive future for themselves. This imaginative exercise is an effective way to increase positive emotions and optimism.

Their boards were created by cutting out or drawing images that represent goals, aspirations, and dreams. By having these boards, youth are reminded every day that anything is possible. This is particularly useful for those who need motivation and inspiration to achieve their dreams.
