MUSIC HISTORY 101 YOUTH ORCHESTRA OF CHARLOTTE FLUTE CHOIR HARP ENSEMBLE

ABOUT THE YOC FAMILY The Youth Orchestras of Charlotte is dedicated to nurturing and inspiring the musical talents of youth in the greater Charlotte area. We provide exceptional instruction and performance experiences in symphonic orchestra and chamber ensemble settings. Our ensembles are led and coached by a team that includes musicians of the Charlotte Symphony and area music educators.

Youth Orchestra of Charlotte - A full symphony orchestra made up of high school age musicians, performing masterpieces from the orchestral repertoire in a professional symphony setting.

Preparatory Orchestra - A full symphony orchestra that performs both actual symphonic literature and arrangements of the repertoire geared to advanced younger players. It is a training orchestra for the YOC. Sinfonia Strings - A string orchestra that prepares young musicians in the art of orchestral performance.

Flute Choir - An ensemble that performs flute choir repertoire and explores a wide variety of musical genres.

P e re i r a r e c e i v e d h i s e a r l y t r a i n i n g in violin in Pretoria from Walter Mony a n d A l a n S o l om o n , a n d h o l d s T e a c h e r a n d P e r former Licentiates from the Univers i t y o f S o u t h A f ri c a . H e s t u d i e d i n t h i s c o u n t r y with David Cerone, g r a d uating as va l e d i c t o r i a n f r o m t h e C l e v e l a n d I n s t i t u t e o f M u s i c with a Bachelor of M u sic degree in 1 9 8 1 a n d a M a st e r o f M u s i c d e g r e e i n 1 9 8 2 . H e received his Doctor o f M usical Arts fr o m t h e U n i v e r s i t y o f T e x a s a t A u s t i n i n 1 9 8 7 , studying with V i n c ent Frittelli. D r . P e r e i r a s e r v e d a s C o n c e r t m a s t e r o f b o t h t he Cleveland In s t itute of Mus i c O r c h e s t r a a s we l l a s t h e U n i v e r s i t y o f T e x a s Orchestra, and c o n d ucted the Un i v e r s i t y o f T e xa s S t r i n g P r o j e c t O r c h e s t r a . S i n c e 1985, Dr. Pereira h a s been a mem b e r o f t h e C h a r l o t t e S y m p h o n y O r c h e s t r a . H e h as appeared freq uently as a so l o i s t a n d c h a m b e r m u s i c i a n i n t h e U n i t e d S t a t e s, South Africa, and N a m ibia, and has s o l o e d w i t h t he C h a r l o t t e S y m p h o n y O r c h e s t r a and the Charlotte C i v i c Orchestra. H e b e l i e v e s s t r o n g l y i n e d u c a t i n g y o u n g m u s i c i a ns and maintains an a c t i ve and succe s s f u l v i o l i n s t u di o . W i t h t h e n e w l y c r e a t e d Y O C , Dr. Pereira c o n t inues to fos t e r m u s i c a l e x c el l e n c e i n o r c h e s t r a l p e r f o r m a n ce, drawing on over 3 0 y ears of profes s i o n a l e x p e r i e n c e .

W e s ley Conno r , T r o m b o n e Wesley Connor is a junior at Hickory Ridge High School in Harrisburg, North Carolina. He studies under Thomas Burge and has studied with Jeremy Marks and Nicholas Carl in the past. He will compete in the finals for the American Trombone Workshop’s Tenor Trombone Competition, finals for the Symphony Guild Young Artists Competition, and won the Blumey Young Artists Competition. Wesley has performed with the Honor Band of America and the NAfME All-National Symphony Orchestra.

Wesley formed the Hickory Ridge Trombone Choir known as, “Bad to the Bone” which has gone on to perform at the NC Trombone Festival and will be competing in the finals for the American Prize in Chamber Music Performance. In the future, Wesley’s love for music steers him in the direction of obtaining a degree in Trombone Performance. Wesley would like to thank Chris White, Thomas Burge, David Rivero, Nicholas Carl, and Jeremy Marks for all they have done for his music career. Lastly, more than anyone, he’d like to thank his family as they’ve been his greatest supporters and he couldn’t imagine doing it without them.

S a y u k i s t a r t e d p l a y i n g t h e v i o l i n a t t he age of four a n d h a s a l r e a d y a c h i e v e d r e m a r k a b l e s u c c e s s in th e music world. A s a d e d i c a t e d a n d h a r d w o r k i n g m u s i c i a n , S a y u ki h a s earned the p o s i t i o n o f c o n c er t m a s t e r i n t h e Y o u t h O r c h e s t r a of C h a r lotte.

S a y u ki's passion f o r m u s i c e x t e nd s b e y o n d h e r l o c a l y o u t h o r c h estra. She h a s a l s o h a d t h e o p p o r t u n i t y t o p a r t i c i p a t e i n t w o o f t he most pres t i g i o u s m u s i c f es t i v a l s i n t h e w o r l d , H e i f e t z a n d T a n g lewood. At t h e s e f e s t i v a l s , S a y u k i h a s c o l l a b o r a t e d w i t h o t h er ta l e nted young m u s i c i a n s f r o m ar o u n d t h e w o r l d a n d h a d t h e c h a n ce to learn f r o m w o r l d - c l a s s m u s i c i a n s . S h e h a s t a k e n f u l l a d v a ntage of the s e o p p o r t u n i t i es , u s i n g t h e m t o r e f i n e h e r s k i l l s a n d grow as a mu s i c i a n .
