FAITH IN SPORTS PASSION. PURPOSE.

JOY.

Abundant Life: Competing With Purpose and Playing With Joy

In John 10:10, Jesus says, “The thief comes only to steal and kill and destroy; I came that they may have life, and have it abundantly.” It’s a powerful reminder for athletes of all ages—especially young athletes—that life isn’t just about surviving. It’s about thriving. It’s not just about showing up. It’s about showing up with passion, purpose, and joy.

Too often in youth sports, we fall into the trap of pressure. Pressure to win. Pressure to be perfect. Pressure to impress. And that pressure can start to steal the joy of the game—the very thing that made you fall in love with your sport in the first place. That’s the thief Jesus warned about.

The enemy would love for you to believe your value is based on your stats, your speed, or your scoreboard. He whispers lies like “you’re not good enough,” “you’ll never make it,” or “you’re just a benchwarmer.” But Jesus offers something completely different. He says: You are enough because I made you. I have more for you. I came to give you life—and not just life, but life to the full.

And yes, that includes how you play, how you lead your team, how you bounce back from failure, and how you carry yourself in victory.

Living an abundant life as an athlete doesn’t mean you’ll always win. It means you’ll always grow. It doesn’t mean you’ll never face setbacks. It means you’ll never face them alone. God doesn’t promise ease— but He promises fullness. And in youth sports, that fullness shows up in the friendships you form, the resilience you build, the leadership you step into, and the joy you feel every time you give your best effort.

Coaches, this is your chance to pour into more than just players—you’re shaping young lives. You’re giving them tools for faith, for adversity, and for character.

Parents, speak life into your athletes. Remind them that their identity isn’t based on performance, but on the God who created them.

Athletes, don’t just play the game—live the life. Smile. Encourage. Hustle. Compete. Worship. You were made to do more than go through the motions. You were made to live fully and freely.

So the next time you take the field, court, or track, remember what Jesus said: “I came that they may have life, and have it abundantly.” That’s not just a promise for Sunday morning—that’s a promise for every moment, including game day.

Play with freedom. Compete with heart. Live with purpose. Because the most important victory is living the full life God created you for.

#11

HURRICANE YOUTH SPORTS | #11 | DEFENSIVE END / LINEBACKER / TIGHT END

Whether he’s stopping plays in the backfield, making key tackles, or running routes as a tight end, Colton Mace is a force to be reckoned with on the football field. Representing Hurricane Football, Wrestling, and Track, Colton brings intensity, leadership, and heart to every team he’s part of.

From Hurricane, West Virginia, Colton has been playing football for seven years — a passion that started when he began asking to play at just four years old. Now, as a standout in multiple positions, he continues to chase greatness every time he straps on his helmet.

One moment that defines his season came in the final minutes of a championship game. With the clock winding down and the opposing team trying to convert after an onside kick, Colton came through in the clutch — tackling the running back behind the line of scrimmage and helping secure the ball and the win. It was the kind of game-changing play that proves why he’s a key piece of the Hurricane lineup.

Off the field, Colton stays just as active. He enjoys playing video games, hanging out with friends, running, and working out. His favorite player is Puka Nacua, and he cheers for the LA Rams. But when it comes to real-life heroes, Colton doesn’t hesitate — “My parents,” he says. “They work hard to give me opportunities they didn’t have.”

For Colton, the best part of being on a team is meeting new people and making new friends — a testament to his team-first mentality and humble nature. With his work ethic, drive, and respect for those who support him, Colton Mace is more than just an athlete — he’s a role model in the making.

Born and raised in Hurricane, West Virginia, Jackson has been playing baseball since he was four. His passion for the game was sparked early by his dad, who handed him a ball before he could even walk. Now, with years of experience under his belt and plenty of highlights to his name, Jackson continues to impress. One of his favorite moments? Crushing two home runs in one weekend during the DE Dinger Days tournament — a performance that won’t be forgotten anytime soon.

Wearing jersey #7 and cheering for the Cincinnati Reds, Jackson looks up to Elly De La Cruz for his electric energy and love for the game. Off the diamond, he keeps just as busy with football, wrestling, art, and his faith through church — showing he's not just a strong athlete, but a well-rounded one too.

COACH PITCH CARDINALS | #44 | PITCHER

# 44

With a passion for baseball that started at age four, Nash Schuler is already proving himself as a clutch performer on the field. A proud member of the Coach Pitch Cardinals from Winfield, West Virginia, Nash wears #44 and brings focus, determination, and joy to every game

One of Nash’s most unforgettable moments this season came when his coach gave him a challenge: hit a line drive past third base. Nash stepped up to the plate and did exactly that — securing the game-winning hit in the bottom of the 6th inning and clinching the tournament by one run. It was a moment of precision, teamwork, and heart that captured everything he loves about the game.

As a pitcher, Nash thrives under pressure, fueled by his love for baseball and inspired by his favorite player, Elly De La Cruz. He cheers for WVU, the Eagles, and the Reds, but it's not just pro athletes who inspire him. His biggest role model is his mom, who he says “does so much for me.”

Off the field, Nash enjoys casting a line and spending time fishing — a calm contrast to the thrill of competition. What does he love most about being on a team? “Having fun with my friends and playing the sport we all love.”

With a strong arm, a stronger heart, and faith at his core, Nash Schuler is already living the advice his parents gave him: work hard, dream big, and keep Jesus in your heart.
