A Letter From the President Dear Supporters of Youth First, Thank you for stepping forward to protect and heal the hearts of young people through your support of Youth First. Each dollar you donate and each minute you volunteer also helps a young person step forward into a brighter future.
Parri O. Black
President & CEO; Youth First, Inc.
In this annual report, you will see how your investment transforms and strengthens thousands of lives – not just through the
numbers but through the testimonials. Ethan’s story is a powerful example of our collective impact. Thanks to your support, more than 27,000 students have access to a Youth First Social Worker embedded in schools across seven counties in Southwest Indiana. These specialized mentors, along with our prevention programs, boost the social and emotional well-being of youth and families.
Others are taking note of our life-changing and life-saving work. The state’s strategic plan to address substance abuse includes this action step: “Consider ways to expand or replicate effective programs such as Youth First.” None of this would be possible without the commitment of our donors, volunteers, staff, school partners, and policymakers. Let’s continue stepping forward together to strengthen youth and families.
A Letter From the Chair Dear Friends of Youth First, John F. Kennedy said, “Children are the world’s most valuable resource and its best hope for the future.” Yet, here we are at a place and time where suicide is the second leading cause of death for young people ages 15-24; where, since 1999, the suicide rate for adolescent girls age 10-14 has tripled; where the number of teenagers dying from drug overdoses has tripled in Indiana over the past decade.
depressive event. The numbers are staggering and the issues traverse all segments of society. With apologies to JFK, children are not our “best hope for the future,” they are our ONLY hope. As a society, we have to do better.
Growing up in today’s technological world creates additional challenges and stresses for teenagers. Cyberbullying is a relatively new problem, but one that has paralleled the rise in teenaged smartphone usage.
Dr. William Wooten, an addictions specialist and the founder of Youth First, was dismayed to see so many young people with substance use issues. He wanted to create a support system to focus on prevention before the problems became intractable. His vision has been fulfilled as Youth First is about to celebrate 20 years of filling that void and providing that support. Youth First Social Workers are doing incredible work as they help children cope with far too much at far too young of an age.
At any given time, studies have found that 5% of our school aged children are having a major
I dream of the day when I can say in a report such as this that the services Youth First
provides are no longer needed. Unfortunately, as the statistics attest, the demand continues to grow faster than our ability to fund and provide them. However, in schools partnering with Youth First, the evidence is clear. We are saving lives and by extension, saving our future. I would be remiss if I didn’t say “thank you” to all the schools, companies, organizations, foundations and individuals that support Youth First. Without you, the work of Youth First could not continue. Thank you for making a difference in the lives of our young people.
John Kamin
Chair; 2016-17 Board of Directors, Youth First, Inc.
Please remember to be an advocate for Youth First. Tell friends, tell leaders, tell everyone how vitally important Youth First is to our schools and communities. Our children are the future!

The research says these are the keys to protecting and healing the hearts of children and the best way to prevent substance use. Your investment promotes positive relationships within families, among friends, and across communities through the wide range of initiatives listed above. For example, the LifeSkills Training program in elementary, middle and high schools helps students develop the confidence and skills to successfully handle challenging situations, interact with peers, and make healthy choices.
Measurable Outcomes Significant increases in anti-smoking knowledge and life skills knowledge Improved anti-substance use attitudes Increased life skills (decision-making, communication, etc.)
Another powerful program is Strengthening Families, which is good for any family raising children ages 3 to 17. Participants in this program increase family bonds, parenting skills, and youth social skills. As a result, young people are less likely to use tobacco, alcohol, or other drugs as they grow older.

Youth First Social Workers frequently identify students with common concerns who could benefit from small group support and skill-building. They may need help adjusting to a divorce or processing grief. Some struggle with anger, bullying, or self-esteem. Others may be at risk for suicide, self-harm, or dropping out of school. The small group approach builds healthy relationships, readiness for positive changes, and resiliency skills. In 2016-17, Youth First conducted small group sessions that collectively assisted almost 600 participants. As a result, students saw significant improvements in hopefulness, coping skills, decision-making, mood management, school bonding, social skills, and more. Here are some of the ways students said they improved thanks to their small group support:
I’ve started to care more and I’m happy and more confident. I know when I’m upset I can talk to someone or write about it instead of bottling things up. Stopping to think before making a choice.

Reconnecting Youth is a semester-long class for selected high school students who are at risk for dropping out due to emotional stress, drug involvement, and/or school performance. Co-facilitated by Youth First Social Workers and trained teachers, the program guides students through a supportive process that leads to positive changes.
ETHAN
Stepping Forward Into a Brighter Future
Ethan first met Youth First Social Worker Dawn Tedrow in Teen Series, a Youth First classroom program for 9th graders designed to support a successful transition into high school. Dawn sensed this high school freshman was going to be a challenge. Their relationship got off to a rocky start. Dawn jokingly said that Ethan was going to be her “special one” in the class. Misunderstanding her use of the word “special,” Ethan flew into a rage, using profanity and calling her names. That was the start of a tough year for Ethan. He missed a lot of school due to a shoulder injury, got further and further behind and was using illegal substances.
use, work on his anger issues, and learn to cope with his problems in healthy ways. Ethan soon became a leader in the class. The last time he used drugs was four weeks before he graduated from the Reconnecting Youth class. “I decided one night I didn’t want to be known for drug use or blaming everyone else for my problems, so I got rid of every illegal substance I had.“ Ethan now attends online school, holds down a part-time job, is interested in a career in business, and wants to step forward into a brighter future. He volunteers by speaking out for Youth First.
He says he spent way too much time in Assistant Principal Ernie Griffin’s office. He suffered from anxiety and depression and was angry. “I was blaming everyone else for my problems,” says Ethan.
“I’m very thankful for the people who have helped me out – my parents, Youth First, Mrs. Tedrow – and for the guidance in my life to make me who I am now. I’d probably be dead without the help I got. Using drugs, it pulls you into that world…it’s scary to think about.”
Dawn didn’t give up on him. They forged a bond and he joined the Reconnecting Youth class she was leading to decrease substance
He says, “I’m now on track, doing amazing. I’m beyond blessed. The growth feels like a dream.”
