A LEGACY OF CARE

Parri O. Black, President & CEO, leaves behind a legacy of care as she retires after 21 years.

Letter From the Board Chair

What an honor it has been to serve as Youth First Board Chair for the 2023-2024 Fiscal Year! Our theme for the year is Care + Connections = Capable Kids . This CARE Youth First provides, and receives, from our donors, volunteers, school and community partners. Nor is it possible without that our employees deliver through the programs and services that are the heartbeat of this organization.

CAPABLE Indiana kids last year thanks to the combined CARE, COMPASSION and CONNECTIONS of ALL of our supporters! Together, the support and generosity doesn’t just provide services; it offers hope, healing and a pathway to brighter futures by providing the resources, services and programs to help every child reach their

Reflection of the prior year would be incomplete without providing special recognition to Parri Black, President & CEO of Youth First, for 21 years of leadership to the organization. Her unwavering commitment to fulfill the vision that the founder, Dr. William Wooten, created has surpassed our expectations. I was introduced to Parri about ten years ago by a mentor and former Board Chair, Donna Harris. I’m so thankful for the introduction and for a front seat view to witness what happens when hearts and minds come together to create better outcomes for Indiana kids and families. What an incredible legacy!

With tremendous gratitude to our supporters, I am honored to present the Annual Impact

Letter From the President

When I joined this organization 21 years ago, I was thrilled to be part of something that strengthened and even saved lives. However, I could not have imagined just how essential Youth First would become to thousands of young people, families, schools, and communities in Indiana. Today nearly 100 Youth First Mental Health Professionals and hundreds of proven prevention programs are available to over 53,000 Indiana students in 126 partner schools across 14 Indiana counties.

This annual report illustrates how something truly remarkable can happen when generous donors and volunteers, dedicated school and community partners, and skilled and compassionate staff join together to support healthy youth development.

As I prepare to retire in 2025 and pass the baton to new leadership, I am confident that our mission and organization will be in very good hands. With your unwavering involvement, Youth First will continue to provide the impactful care and connections that result in capable kids and undoubtedly, amazing adults.

I will be forever grateful and forever an advocate for Youth First.

Teaching Youth Why It’s Important to Try

WhyTry

WhyTry is designed to teach youth the value of putting effort into challenges at home, at school, and with peers. The goal of the program is to answer the question “Why try in life when frustrated with, confused by, or angry about life’s pressures and challenges?”

The program is facilitated by Youth First Mental Health Professionals and uses a multi-sensory approach, including journaling, music, and physical activity, to

What aspects of the WhyTry program did you find to be most helpful?

I found the motivation formula to be most helpful because I am an athlete, and I trained how to motivate myself even in things that aren’t involved in sports.

Building Effective Leaders and Communicators

Family First

Raising children can be difficult in today’s world, and finding quality time to spend together as a family is challenging. Family First programs, featuring the Strengthening Families curriculum, strengthen family bonds and foster resilience in children. This group of programs benefits any family with children ages 3-17.

It’s often said that parenting doesn’t come with a handbook, but Family First programs provide many tools to guide parents and caregivers. The focus is on improving parenting skills through effective communication, setting boundaries, and monitoring healthy brain development. The techniques taught in the programs reduce risk factors for substance misuse, evident in existing research. Children learn social skills, problem solving, ways to de-stress, and the dangers of substance misuse.

Positive parenting techniques help children grow up well adjusted, successful in school and ready to lead productive lives. Nearly 100% of families who attend Family First believe the program has helped them and would recommend it to other families.

The teacher was amazing and had so much good firsthand knowledge on how to deal with situations.

―Youth First Mental Health Professional

When young people struggle with their mental health, it can lead to decreased school engagement, poor decision-making, substance misuse, thoughts of suicide, and other high-risk behaviors. In the 2023-2024 academic year, Youth First, Inc. partnered with over 115 schools across 14 Indiana counties to strengthen the mental health and well-being of young people through care, connections, and proven prevention practices.

Youth First’s Student Assistance Program embeds highly trained mental health professionals and bilingual support staff in school buildings, where they are easily accessed by thousands of young people, parents, and teachers, free of charge. Youth First’s team builds caring relationships, boosts resiliency and coping skills, and connects families to valuable community resources. As a result, students become more engaged in school, more committed to pursuing their goals and dreams, and ultimately, more likely to become healthy, capable adults.

This report summarizes the impact of Youth First’s Student Assistance Program in 2023-2024.

My Youth First Social Worker is a very understanding person. She will always be there when you need her most. One major thing she helped me through was when my parents were fighting and I was having home issues, but she has helped me with so much more than that. She helps me stay in school, because she can calm me down and that keeps me from getting in trouble. And it’s not just me she impacts. She impacts many people’s lives.

America Contreras: The Desire to Give Back Comes Full Circle

As an eighth grader at Washington Middle School, America Contreras never imagined how her connection with a Youth First Social Worker would influence her future career plans.

As first-generation immigrants, America’s family depended upon Laura Keys, Youth First’s mental health professional at Washington at the time, to provide guidance and help them navigate outside services and resources. America says, “There was a lot of turmoil happening with my family at the time. Traumatic events were taking place. Laura showed me empathy and understanding.” As Laura gave the family helpful community or school information, America would interpret and pass it along to her mother in Spanish.

Fast forward a decade or more, and America interviewed for a newly created position at Youth First. She says, “I had no idea Laura Keys would be the one to interview me. It filled us both with joy, as we hadn’t seen each other in over a decade!”

In her role as Support Services Coordinator, America cares for students and families by bridging a variety of barriers through interpreting, cultural competency, academic support, and multi-lingual connection with students and parents. She says, “I wear many hats daily.” America helps families with school enrollment, assists staff with interpreting to help them communicate effectively with Spanish-speaking students, organizes school parent engagement events for multi-lingual families, offers overall academic support for students, and collaborates with Youth First Mental Health Professionals as needed.

Laura Keys, now serving as Youth First’s Vice President of Programs & Services, and other school social workers had a strong impact on America, who says she wanted to give back because of the kindness that was shown to her, stating, “It came full circle. I wanted to support families in their native language because I often translated for Laura and my mother.” She feels the best part of her job is “watching my students feel a sense of belonging once I have been able to show them what it means to truly connect with their school and community.”

Her hope is that in the future there will be more multi-lingual service coordinators to provide support for underserved populations, noting there is a lack of access to mental health professionals because many students are uninsured or underinsured. She also feels there is a need for more mental health professionals of minority backgrounds, stating: “Representation is very important, and I hope to see this change in the years to come.”

Our Program Team: Ensuring Impact and Fidelity

In the 2023-2024 school year, nearly 250 Youth First programs were delivered, with 8,400 students and family members participating across our 14-county footprint.

How is this possible? Meet our amazing Program staff, the hard-working and knowledgeable team responsible for getting our family, school-based, and community programs off the ground and to completion each year.

The Program Team is led by our Vice President of Programs & Services, Director of Programs, and Assistant Director of Programs. There are four Program Managers and a Programs & Services Assistant rounding out the team.

They identify and train facilitators, partner with our mental health professionals, recruit participants, find program locations, work with principals and school staff, hire food coordinators and childcare workers, promote programs, order program supplies, prepare materials, plan program graduations, collect and compile data, and often facilitate programs themselves.

It is challenging but rewarding, and our team works tirelessly to make sure Youth First programs have the greatest positive impact on students and their families.

Director of Programs Kent Leslie is extremely proud of his team, stating: “Our team is so knowledgeable and professional. I know I can depend on them to ensure our programs

Care. Connections. Capable Kids. Thanks to

your

support,

students are thriving. Youth First provides care and connections to ensure our schools and communities have capable kids with bright futures ahead!

Youth First is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit that relies on support from the community to make what we do possible. Whether you give funds, give donations, give time, or give voice ― you can make a difference and help strengthen the mental health of Indiana kids. From the donors who fund our crucial services to the volunteers who facilitate our programs, help with our events, and steer our committees, we need people like you. See below for more on how you can directly impact the lives of students and families in need.

Donate & Make An Impact

Please accept our heartfelt invitation to care for young hearts with a donation to Youth First. Your support makes an impact in our community, and we encourage you to ask others to join you! To donate, decide which donation frequency is best: multi-year, monthly, or one-time. Youth First accepts donations of cash gifts (cash, check, credit/debit, or ACH), gifts of appreciated securities, IRA charitable rollovers, donor-advised funds, planned gifts, and honorary and memorial gifts. Donations may be designated to your county, school, area of interest, or used where they are needed most. Ask about our matching gift opportunity!

Volunteer Your Time & Talents

Engaged volunteers are the transformational lifeline of our organization. Youth First encourages individuals who care about young people and their community to become volunteers and advocates. Your gifts of time and talent help Youth First raise awareness and strengthen and transform lives every day.

Consider a Legacy Gift to Youth First

Have you considered leaving the gift of hope through a legacy gift to Youth First? With a planned gift through your will, estate plan, life insurance policy, charitable gift annuity, or donor-advised fund, you can leave a legacy that builds strong futures for children. For more information, visit youthfirstinc.org or call 812-421-8336.
