Letter From the Board Chair

Dear Youth First Supporters,

As the Chair of the Youth First Board of Directors for fiscal year 2022-23, I am honored to present our Annual Impact Report. In 2023, Youth First celebrated its 25th Anniversary, a monumental milestone for any non-profit. In our culture, a 25th Anniversary is very special and typically referred to as a “Silver Anniversary.” Using this analogy, our formal celebration was penned the “Silver Lining Gala.” How appropriate, as the Cambridge English Dictionary defines a silver lining as an advantage that comes from a difficult or unpleasant situation. Youth First, with its team of mental health professionals and program facilitators, has been the silver lining for thousands of children over the last 25 years.

As quoted from John F. Kennedy, “Children are the world’s most valuable resource and its best hope for the future.” Today’s children are faced with many challenges, and all of us have a responsibility to protect our children and give them the best opportunity to grow into healthy, happy, and successful adults. Youth First supports our children by providing evidence-based programs that promote mental health, prevent substance misuse, and maximize student success.

As a finance professional, I have always been data driven, and I want to feel my contributions have an impact. The Youth First model provides that data, and this report describes the impact. Your generosity and partnership make it possible for Youth First to deliver these services free-of-charge to students and families. Thank you for your past support and investing in our children. It is an investment that will warm your heart and reap benefits for generations to come.

With sincere gratitude,

Cheryl

Wathen

Letter From the President

Dear Friends,

Your support for Youth First provides hope and help to thousands of young people who must navigate an increasingly complex world. In this, our Silver Anniversary year, we are celebrating all of the “silver linings” that make Youth First successful. This includes our donors and volunteers as well as our school partners and community collaborators. With your help, our programs and professionals are equipping youth and families with the caring relationships, resiliency skills, and resources they need to thrive. This annual impact report is full of “silver linings,” and it is all thanks to you!

Gratefully,

Increasing Protective Factors to Reduce Risk

LifeSkills Training

LifeSkills Training (LST) – a semester-long, school day program –teaches students to build resilience to pro-drug influences. It has been proven to reduce the risks of alcohol, tobacco, drug abuse, and violence by targeting the major social and psychological factors that promote the initiation of substance use and other risky behaviors.

The LST program has been designed for use with middle/junior high school students; however, separate LST programs can be offered to target students in elementary school (grades 3-5), middle school (grades 6-8), and high school (grades 9-12).

Building Stronger, More Resilient Families

Family First

In today’s world, raising children can be difficult, and finding quality time to spend as a family is challenging. Family First programs, featuring the Strengthening Families curriculum, strengthen family bonds and foster resilience in children. The program benefits any family with children ages 3-17.

The focus is on improving parenting skills through effective communication, setting boundaries, and monitoring healthy brain development in children. Children learn social skills, including problem solving, ways to de-stress, and the dangers of substance misuse. When positive parenting techniques are used, children are more likely to grow up well adjusted, successful in school and ready to lead productive lives.

Sessions utilize role-playing, discussion, educational games, and family projects. Nearly 100% of families who attend Family First believe the program has helped them and would recommend it to other families.

Before this program, I just let my kids play with one another. I was drowning in my own stuff, and I didn’t know what true parenting was. I didn’t have skills passed on to me by my parents. With Family First, I learned how to pay attention to my kids and help them.

Helping Students Reach Their Potential

I am now someone who knows that my anxiety doesn’t have to define me, nor does it have to hold me back from anything that I want to do in life. Congratulations, Youth First, on 25 years of helping kids reach their full potential!

―Leah, Former Student Served by Youth First

Youth First, Inc. equips thousands of young people like Leah with the hope and help they need to become thriving adults. The agency partners with over 100 Indiana schools to give students and families free, easy access to licensed mental health professionals (primarily master’s level social workers) and evidence-based prevention programs. These clinically trained professionals strengthen student mental health and well-being through one-to-one mentoring, small group support, educational programming, links to resources, and parent/teacher engagement.

Studies show when young people have caring relationships, healthy coping skills, and accurate information, they become more resilient, better prepared to withstand the pressures of today’s world, and more likely to lead positive, productive lives.

Hi Miss B., I always feel safe with you. I know I can count on you for everything. If I have a bad day I know I can come to you and you’ll understand.

Working Toward a Brighter Future

Desirae first met Youth First Social Worker Teresa Mercer when she was in 6th grade. Her family was in crisis. Her mom, who had recently given birth to a baby boy, had just emerged from a coma and was in the middle of a three-month hospital stay. Desirae and her grandmother were doing their best to care for her six-week old brother.

Soon after, unfortunately, her grandmother suffered a stroke. Now with mom and grandmother unable to care for them, Desirae and her baby brother went to live separately with family friends.

Her world in chaos, Desirae found her way to Mercer’s office at school, where many of her classmates had found help. Mercer says, “I couldn’t believe this very mature, witty eleven-year old was dealing with everything life had thrown at her. I thought she was joking as she told me her story.”

Desirae says Mercer listened, offered support, and “could put a label on what I was feeling.” An immediate bond formed between the two.

This support was vital for Desirae through middle and high school. By the time she was a junior, her mom had been struggling with addiction for years, had lost her job, and Desirae and her brother were removed from the home.

It was during this tumultuous time that Desirae started making her own unhealthy choices. Mercer recommended Youth First’s Reconnecting Youth (RY) program, designed to reengage students into their school environment by increasing school performance, decreasing drug involvement, and improving mood management.

“We called it the Breakfast Club,” Desirae says. The small group of students bonded and became lasting friends who still keep in touch.

“Kids all need love,” says Mercer. “Everybody needs to feel that type of support. It’s crucial as a teen. The goal of RY is to build their self-esteem. That is the foundation. The program also teaches them to make better decisions, practice self-control, and set goals.”

struggles.

In addition to her classes senior year, Desirae took EMT courses and worked full time in a restaurant. Sadly, she also experienced the unexpected death of her best friend. When she felt grief and sadness bringing her down, she drew on the coping skills she learned from Mercer and RY. “Without that experience, it would have been harder to dig out of the hole I was in. I struggled with suicidal ideation, and I probably wouldn’t be here if I didn’t have that support.”

After high school, Desirae worked as a team lead at Toyota. She eventually returned to EMT training, inspired by the first responders on scene with her mom and grandma years before. She feels her work with Mercer and RY equipped her with the life skills to be successful.

Desirae has a great relationship with her mom now, who is sober and a leader in the workplace. Her younger brother is now 12 and doing well in school.

She is financially stable, has her own home, and graduated from college in December. This poised and mature young lady has a world of opportunity in front of her, and she says, “I can’t wait to get started. Thank you, Youth First!”

Partners in Student Success

say we hit the jackpot with her. In all my years as a teacher and administrator, I would definitely say the teamwork I experience working alongside Kelly to ensure the social and emotional well-being of our students has been pure joy,” Masterson says.

Evansville Christian School (ECS) has also offered the LifeSkills Training (LST) program for grades 4-6. Masterson team-teaches this program with McClarnon. By facilitating this program, Masterson sees first-hand how students are empowered with grade level appropriate life skills such as positive self-esteem, healthy decision making, handling stress, good communication skills, and assertiveness.

“Throughout the year we refer to these skills when counseling students, resolving conflicts, or dealing with discipline situations. As a principal, I also love facilitating this program to have time to cultivate relationships with students,” she

Masterson also believes the Family First program aligns perfectly with one of ECS’s core values: building strong families. She says, “We know students need the support of healthy families partnering with the child’s school.” For the past two years, ECS has provided Family First programs for preschool and kindergarten students in partnership with Crossroads Christian Church Mothers Morning Out, as well as offering a program for first through sixth grade families. Much of the ECS staff is involved in facilitating these programs, including Youth First Social Worker Kelly McClarnon and Masterson herself.

Also important to Masterson is the support of the Youth First staff who recruit, hire, and train social workers and match them with the schools they serve. “I know the social worker in my building is supported by a team who is available to consult with and support her so she can continue to serve our school community. Youth First is a valuable asset to our schools, and many people contribute to the success of this partnership. Thank you to all of Youth First’s

Youth First Supports Students Thanks to YOU!

Your donation allows our mental health team to link kids, families, and schools to vital services and programs.

Youth First’s vision of communities supporting healthy, safe, and successful youth and families is realized when young people maximize their potential. Youth First Mental Health Professionals implement a highly impactful system of care, serving as valuable links for students and families to mental health services, impactful programs, and community resources. Thanks to your support, these connections help kids thrive.

Donate & Make An Impact

Please accept our heartfelt invitation to heal young hearts with a donation to Youth First. Your support makes an impact in our community, and we encourage you to ask others to join you! To donate, decide which donation frequency is best: multi-year, monthly, or one-time. Youth First accepts donations of cash gifts (cash, check, credit/debit, or ACH), gifts of appreciated securities, IRA charitable rollovers, donor-advised funds, planned gifts, and honorary and memorial gifts. Donations may be designated to your county, school, area of interest, or used where they are needed most. Ask about our matching gift opportunity!

Volunteer Your Time & Talents

Engaged volunteers are the transformational lifeline of our organization. Youth First encourages individuals who care about young people and their community to become volunteers and advocates. Your gifts of time and talent help Youth First raise awareness and transform lives every day.

Consider a Legacy Gift to Youth First

Have you considered leaving the gift of hope through a legacy gift to Youth First? With a planned gift through your will, estate plan, life insurance policy, charitable gift annuity, or donor-advised fund, you can leave a legacy that builds strong futures for children.

For more information, visit youthfirstinc.org or contact our Development Staff at 812-421-8336.
