Letter From the President Dear Donors, Volunteers, and Partners, Life is full of transitions, some are joyful and some are painful, but they are all inevitable. Your continuing investment in Youth First helps young people and families navigate the stress of transitions, whether it’s the birth of a baby, the first day of school, the tricky teenage years, or the loss of a loved one. Much like the individuals we serve, Youth First is also continuously growing and adapting in order to meet more needs. In the last decade, our school partners, team members, and outreach have more than doubled in size to over 100 schools, over 100 staff, and over 50,000 Indiana students with access to Youth First’s social work services and prevention programs. This growth is cause for celebration, but it also comes with new challenges. Youth First’s capacity to continue meeting the mission is only possible because of you, our steadfast supporters and committed collaborators. As you read this annual impact report, you will see just how valuable your support is. Thanks to you, thousands of vulnerable youth and their families are better prepared to thrive. Gratefully,

Letter From the Board Chair Dear Youth First Supporters, As the Chair of Youth First’s Board of Directors from 2021-2022, I take pride in providing this overview of the organization’s many successes outlined in the accompanying report. We have experienced continued growth in our work with schools and families and have made headway in our efforts to attract devoted social workers and staff in a challenging labor market. Please take some time to review the results in this report. Entrepreneur Seth Godin said: “Change is not a threat, it is an opportunity. It is when we are in transition that we are most completely alive.” Each of us undergoes change in some form, whether it’s a new job, an altered position in life, a new family relationship, a loss, or another obstacle to be overcome. The young people served by Youth First experience life-changing events but might have to face their difficulties alone were it not for the services of Youth First Social Workers and prevention programs. Youth First has now entered our 25th year, and our mission has undergone significant change in geography as we now serve 13 counties through 117 schools and other community partners, but our goals have remained the same: to strengthen youth and families. As we reflect on the previous year, we give special recognition to our growing list of contributors included here. These supporters have been responsible for helping Youth First reach lofty goals. The success we have experienced in the past 25 years can be measured by the positive impact Youth First’s team has made in so many young lives. Al’s Pals CAST LifeSkills Training Reconnecting Youth Teen Series Tween Series WhyTry
Supporting Successful Transitions Teen & Tween Series As part of Youth First’s efforts to expand universal prevention programming for students, the number of Teen Series and Tween Series programs increased by 25 percent in the 2021-2022 school year. Facilitated by Youth First Social Workers, Teen & Tween Series are classroom programs designed to support successful transitions into junior high and high school. Youth First Social Workers reinforce healthy lifestyle choices and

introduce themselves as a source of support for students. Sessions focus on substance use prevention, dealing with stress, healthy brain development, managing parent/teen relationships, internet safety, and suicide prevention. Improving Family Relationships & Communication Family First Family bonds are enriched with the Family First program, featuring the Strengthening Families curriculum. It is offered to families with children ages 3-17. The focus is on improving parenting skills through effective communication, setting boundaries, and monitoring healthy brain development in children. Youth sessions include problem-solving, handling stress, and the dangers of drug and alcohol use.

Helping Students & Families Navigate Change Youth First Social Workers Address the Need for Accessible Mental Health Care In a year when national leaders sounded the alarm about skyrocketing rates of anxiety, depression, substance abuse, and suicide, Youth First provided thousands of students with free, in-school access to professional mental health care. The parents of these young people did not need to wait weeks or even months for a first visit – nor were they required to pay $100 or more per session, manage insurance bills, work out transportation, or coordinate multiple scheduling demands. The only requirements for the services were
enrollment in the school and parent/caregiver consent. Additionally, Youth First Social Workers served the entire school building with tiered programming for larger groups of students and training and support for teachers and parents. As it has for the last 24 years, Youth First’s comprehensive approach reduced stigma and built the supportive scaffolding everyone needs to overcome obstacles, succeed academically, and pursue safe, healthy, productive lives.

If it weren’t for you, I truly don’t think I would be alive today, so I thank you so much for being there for me and hearing everything I’ve had to say. It’s super sad that I probably won’t be able to sit in your little room and talk with you again, but everything changes eventually, so I’m just being thankful and moving on… Thank you for everything you’ve done for me. Erick: Growing in Hope through Life Transitions and Tremendous Loss Erick Morales is a pleasant, affable junior at Harrison High School. Behind his bright smile, you would never know there is significant pain from all of the loss and adversity he has faced in his young life. There is also extraordinary courage in the many times he has chosen to ask for help and embrace hope. The trials began early. Diagnosed with leukemia at 15 months, Erick was in and out of the hospital receiving chemotherapy treatments, blood transfusions, and therapy. This battle for his life continued until he went into remission at age five. Fast forward to middle school, when Erick – a quiet, well-behaved student – experienced serious bullying in 6th–7th grade, including an incident that involved death threats on social media. Erick says, “That was really hard, because we never even understood why the kid was bullying me.” As with other challenges he has faced, Erick chose to learn from the experience rather than remain a victim. With help from Kelsey Weber, the Youth First Social Worker at McGary, Erick realized that “hurt kids hurt other kids,” and they often bully because they are insecure, jealous, or feeling pain. Mrs. Weber had become a caring presence “right down the hall,” someone he trusted and confided in. Youth First Social Workers are a lifeline for students like Erick. They are licensed mental health professionals embedded in school buildings, available to help students dealing with challenges like bullying, anxiety, depression, grief, substance use, and suicidal thoughts.

Even though they did not have a close relationship, Erick experienced another blow in 7th grade when his biological father was shot and killed while driving his cab. With a recommendation from Mrs. Weber, Erick sought help from an outside therapist to come to grips with this loss. Not only did he grieve the death of his father, but he also grieved the close relationship they would never have as father and son. Erick was in eighth grade in the spring of 2020 when the Covid-19 pandemic shut down the world and school buildings closed. Youth First Social Workers looked for new ways to connect with students and their families. Phone calls, texts, video sessions, and email became the new normal. Walking in the neighborhood was a way for Mrs. Weber, who lived near McGary, to check in with some of her caseload kids when everyone was sheltering at home. Erick lived nearby and would see Ms. Weber out for walks with her baby, and they would talk together. The next school year, Erick was adjusting to his first year of high school when tragedy struck again and one of his close friends, Abby, died in a car accident. This was very traumatic for Erick and his friends - and another significant loss for Erick to grieve. He says, “Seeing the footage of the crash on the news over and over made it really hard for all of us to move on.”
Since the accident happened close to the beginning of the school year, Kelsey Weber went to the high school to care for kids like Erick, who were very familiar with her at McGary but had not yet met Dawn Tedrow, the Youth First Social Worker at Harrison High School. Thankfully, Youth First’s continuum of care allows students on a Youth First Social Worker’s caseload to transfer seamlessly to a new Youth First Social Worker when they move from one partner school to another. Youth First Social Workers meet before the year begins to discuss students on their caseload who are moving on to a new school and a new mentor. The new social worker can reach out to the former any time questions about the student arise. Ms. Tedrow began meeting regularly with Erick to help him process unresolved grief, which by now also included the death of his beloved pet dog, and she quickly knew he would be a good candidate for Youth First’s Reconnecting Youth (RY) program. This semester-long class gathers a small group of students who have a wide range of needs and a high risk of dropping out of school. The program is co-facilitated by a Youth First Social Worker and a trained teacher. Ms. Tedrow invited Erick to join the class second semester of his freshman year. Covid-19 precautions were still in place, and RY students had to social distance and wear masks in class. It was a little more difficult to bond under those conditions, but Erick found new friends and new coping skills in the class to help deal with the emotional fallout from his losses. Erick loved the class and compared RY to the movie “The Breakfast Club” (he also says, “but without the illegal substances!”). In fact, he requested to take RY again his sophomore year, and administrators agreed it would complement his academic work. This time there were less Covid-19 restrictions in place and the group bonded very well. Because of his familiarity with
the class, Erick quickly emerged as a leader in the group. He also continued therapy outside of school. One more challenge was still to come. At the end of his sophomore year, Erick’s stepdad became ill and entered hospice. He and Erick were close, and though his death proved to be the hardest trauma yet to walk through, Erick remained strong for his mom and little brother, serving as a caregiver and encouraging them to seek therapy. Now a junior, Erick is involved with tennis, wrestling and golf and maintains above a 3.1 grade point average. He was selected for tennis all-conference academic honors this year. He has also consistently worked a part-time job to save money to fix up his stepdad’s beloved truck, which Erick now drives. Despite everything he has been through, Erick displays a tremendous ability to bounce back. Kelsey Weber is amazed at how he has blossomed since middle school. She says, “Erick was always a good kid, but he is very involved at school and has certainly emerged as a leader among his friends.” Dawn Tedrow is incredibly impressed with Erick’s resiliency. She says, “Erick has really matured since he took the first Reconnecting Youth class freshman year. With everything he’s been through, every time he gets knocked down he just gets right back up.” After graduation, Erick hopes to attend Ivy Tech and study to become a licensed electrician and HVAC technician. He would like to have a family and put his skills to use building his dream house someday. He says, “Without Youth First, Mrs. Weber and Ms. Tedrow, I don’t know where I would be today.” Erick, we have no doubt you will successfully put all you have learned to work as you transition into the next chapter of your life.

In honor of over two decades of strengthening kids and families, the Silver Lining Gala will highlight the incredible impact Youth First has made in the lives of Indiana students. The celebratory event will be at USI’s Carter Hall and feature a special edition of the Passport to Adventure Auction, a formal dinner, a heartfelt program, musical entertainment, and more!
Korn Ferry Tour Championship
October 5–8, 2023 Join Youth First at the season-ending Korn Ferry Tour Finals event which is played at Victoria National Golf Club in Newburgh. Volunteers are the heart of the tournament, and there are many opportunities to get involved and support Youth First.
Walking for Dreams
Sunday, May 21, 2023 Join our Youth First team as we participate in Walking for Dreams, a family and pet walk along the Evansville Riverfront that helps us raise funds to serve youth and families. The afternoon event includes family-friendly fun, live music, booths, and giveaways.
