Letter From the President Dear Donors, Volunteers, and Partners, With your generous support, we are coaching thousands of kids to thrive and assisting their parents and teachers, too.

You are the fuel that drives Youth First’s life-changing impact from Evansville to Ellettsville, Loogootee to Leopold, Mt. Vernon to Martinsville, Paoli to Princeton, Washington to Warrick County, and many more communities along the way.

These are the keys to preventing poverty, addictions, suicide, and other problems that threaten lives and drag down communities.

In the wake of the pandemic and the escalating mental health concerns, it will come as no surprise that more schools are seeking Youth First’s social work services and prevention programs. With your continued support, we will make sure young people have the resources they need to flourish in this increasingly complex world.

Letter From the Board Chair Wow! What a year! I was honored to be Youth First’s Board Chair in 2020-2021.

No one knew the impact that COVID-19 would take on our youth, parents, teachers, and school staff, but Youth First was prepared to meet the needs of students as well as everyone else involved with them. Youth First’s services and programs directly impacted the lives of over 21,000 young people last school year.

Our theme for the year fits the times we are in: “Coaching Kids to Thrive.” It highlights the importance of helping youth through a pandemic that has caused additional mental stress and impacted academic success.

A quote I found by Byron Egeland states: “Resilience has been described as the capacity for positive outcomes despite challenging or threatening circumstances.” This quote really describes our Youth First staff who went above and beyond to help youth, families, and teachers.

We were able to pivot and set up ways to stay in contact with students even when they were out of school. As a board member, I have been fortunate to hear several stories about how this continued connection led to many positive outcomes.

The heartful work and dedication of Youth First staff could not continue without generous donors like you! We continue to receive additional requests for social workers from schools around the state of Indiana. As of 2022, we have grown to 13 counties and 107 schools, which is up from 11 counties and 92 schools in 2020-21.

This growing demand for our services is no doubt because of Youth First’s strong measurable outcomes, which are presented in this impact report. I think you will also be amazed by the number of individuals served and the stories they share.

Reconnecting Youth

Programs

Reconnecting Youth (RY) is a research-proven classroom program for students in grades 9-12. It is designed to identify students with poor attendance, declining grades, possible substance use, and challenges with managing their emotions.

This semester-long, lifechanging program bolsters self-esteem and improves Gibson Southern High School decision making, personal control and interpersonal “reconnect” to healthy habits and communications, and offers a safe relationships in ways that can help environment for serious reflection them thrive. and readiness for change.

Building Strong Relationships & Strengthening Family Bonds

Programs for Youth & Families

Family First Series Youth First’s Family First programs are designed to help families thrive by building on family strengths.

Featuring the Strengthening Families Curriculum, Family First programs allow participants to work with a facilitator who provides tools to create an environment where children are more likely to grow up well-adjusted, successful in school, and ready to lead productive lives.

Through facilitated discussion, role-playing, family projects, and educational games, adult lessons focus on developing parenting skills that increase healthy bonding between parent and child and reduce risk factors for substance abuse. Youth sessions teach important communication and life skills.

Due to the Covid-19 pandemic, all Family First programs shifted to a virtual setting during the 2020-2021 school year.

Participating families continued to attend free, weekly sessions via

Zoom over a ten-week period, which allowed Youth First to reach families in a wider geographic area. After each session they attended, families picked up a meal at a local restaurant the next evening to take home and enjoy together.

Individuals Served Gary and Anita Young

Family First program facilitators Gary and Anita Young have been teaching the Strengthening Families Curriculum since 2018, both virtually and in-person.

“I think these programs give [participants] tools they may not have thought of before, because parenting doesn’t come with a toolbox,” says Gary.

Anita adds, “Parenting is such a hard job to have. There’s so much responsibility and so many things that you maybe don’t think are important until someone points it out to you, which helps so much.”

Coaching Kids to Thrive!

Youth First Social Workers are Protecting Youth in a Challenging Time Now more than ever, schools must be places of care and support in order to be places of learning. Youth First Social Workers, embedded individually in schools and yet working together as a team across grade levels and counties, are uniquely positioned to offer that care. In every school we partner with, these Master’s level mental health professionals strengthen connections between students and their teachers and between families and community resources, creating safer and more supportive environments for learning.

Student Lives Touched by a Youth First Social Worker

Numbers from the 2020-2021 school year show the rising need: Youth First Social Workers in 92 partner schools saw a 40% increase in life-threatening crisis interventions – primarily for suicide risk – and a 60% increase in consultations with teachers, seeking support both for their students and for themselves. They cared for 84 students who lost a loved one to Covid-19. And they served as indispensable connectors to community resources urgently needed by kids and families.

I wanted to take a moment to recognize Ashley Underwood, the Youth First Social Worker at Loge Elementary School in Boonville. She has been a blessing in my first grade daughter Demi’s school life! Demi suffers from anxiety and worry, and going to school each morning for such a long day is the root cause. She is afraid she will be forgotten or left, even though she has never been forgotten or left a day in her life. After reaching out to Youth First and then Ashley directly, Ashley immediately jumped into action. Not only does Ashley communicate with me regularly, but she meets with Demi on a weekly basis and checks in on her in the classroom when I let her know Demi is having a "worry day." At home, Demi consistently raves about her time spent with Ashley and looks forward to it each week. Demi tells me about the activities they do together, conversations they have, and the fidgets Ashley keeps in her office. I just wanted to say thank you for what you do. Your organization and staff are truly making a difference in my 6-year-old’s life!

Providing Caring Support for Our School Partners

Mark Arnold, Principal Washington Jr. High School, Daviess County Now more than ever, the absolute necessity of having a Youth First Social Worker available for our kids reveals itself every day. The needs of our students have only increased in these uncertain times. I can't imagine not having highly qualified, caring, consistent support for our students. Partnering with Youth First was one of the most important, impactful decisions that we have made for our school. I can't imagine a time before Youth First.

Eric Goggins, Superintendent North Gibson School Corporation, Gibson County Our schools need Youth First’s mental health expertise now more than ever. We are especially concerned about young people with a family history of addiction, including the increasing number impacted by the opioid epidemic. These circumstances interfere with their ability to learn and increase the likelihood that they will become drug users or adopt other life-threatening behaviors. The fear and isolation caused by the COVID-19 pandemic have only increased these risks for children and families. Youth First Social Workers provide life-strengthening and lifesaving support to thousands of students and families.

Nick Kerner, Assistant Principal Joshua Academy, Vanderburgh County Cynthia’s impact doesn’t stop with the students; she’s also made an impact on the staff. At Joshua Academy, staff have tried several ways to help students struggling with behavioral issues, but the change came when the Youth First Social Worker came in with a different perspective and new mechanisms. She discusses tone and approach with teachers, asking “How are you talking to the kids? Always think of the students’ perspective. Changing the narrative on how we’re approaching the students will model it for them.” This change in approach benefited a student who struggled heavily with behavioral issues. They went from having daily visits to the discipline office to only once or twice in the whole year.

Jimmy Ellis, Superintendent Orleans Community School, Orange County The COVID-19 pandemic has been very challenging for our students, staff, and parents. In addition to the struggles our school community has been dealing with getting students caught up academically, the social/emotional issues students have been dealing with have been significant. The positive impact our Youth First Social Worker has made daily in the lives of children throughout the pandemic has made these difficult times easier for our students and community.

Ryan Frazier, Assistant Principal Castle High School, Warrick County I cannot say enough about the positive impact Youth First Social Worker Kathy Baker has on the students, parents, staff and greater Castle High School community. Through her efforts to help students with their mental health, Kathy has literally assisted in saving lives. She has helped countless students find the motivation to finish high school, assisted students in breaking the cycle of addiction, mended relationships between parents and children, and the list goes on. When students need her, she is there.

Jessica Laughlin, Youth First Social Worker Edgewood Jr. High, Monroe County I feel that my job as the social worker at EJHS is to also be of support to the teachers and faculty. While most consultations with teachers and faculty include students and families, many were also for personal support. I provided a space for teachers and faculty to express emotions, thoughts, and feelings that occurred due to the nature of the 2020-2021 school year. Many times this included distress with home life, mental health education, guidance on supporting loved ones, and frustrations with the adjustments made in life due to COVID. Sometimes it was as simple as allowing someone to take a breather in my office or providing a listening ear after a tough day. I provided support to a faculty member who had lost several family members throughout the year, a teacher who was juggling their job, grad school, and the stress of COVID, and education and resources to a teacher who wanted to help her child experiencing anxiety. I also provided a supportive and educational weekly email called "Mental Health Monday," where I shared strategies and tools for self-care, coping skills for the school year, and how to foster their own mental health.

Dr. Daryl Hagan, Superintendent Evansville Catholic Diocese I value having Youth First Social Workers in school buildings for students. After the crisis of the pandemic, our students are going to return anywhere on the range of confused to abused.

Niki Walls, Youth First Social Worker Bell Intermediate Academy, Morgan County A teacher said, "I took you for granted and didn't realize how much of a support you were just for me alone. One day, you weren't here and I needed you, so I still just went into your office to sit and gather my thoughts.” I also received a text from our Vice Principal stating that she would not have been able to make it through the day without my help on a crisis situation we had earlier this week.

Youth First is inviting supporters to attend the 20th Annual Passport to Adventure Benefit Auction, either in person at the DoubleTree in downtown Evansville or virtually via live stream. Sunday, May 22, 2022 Join our Youth First team as we participate in Walking for Dreams, a 5k family and pet walk along the Evansville Riverfront that helps us raise funds to serve youth and families. The afternoon event includes family-friendly fun, live music, booths, and giveaways.

Korn Ferry Tour Championship

September 1–4, 2022 Join Youth First at the season-ending Korn Ferry Tour Finals event which is played at Victoria National Golf Club in Newburgh. Volunteers are the heart of the tournament, and there are many opportunities to get involved and support Youth First.

This signature event allows us to thank our donors, volunteers, and school partners who have contributed to Youth First’s growth. This past year marked our 14th annual event, and we were delighted to host our in-person 2021 Champions Celebration honoring John and Gail Dunn as the Dr. William Wooten Champions of Youth First.
