Letter From the President Dear Donors, Volunteers, and Partners, One of our Youth First Social Workers recently received this sweet note from a 2020 high school graduate, but I think it should be addressed to you as well: “You’ve given me the ability and resources to take care of my mental health. No matter where I go or what I do I will never forget all that you’ve done for me!”

Thanks to your support, over 40,000 students, plus their parents/caregivers and teachers, could access our mental health mentors, evidence-based prevention programs, and social-emotional resources even when schools were shut down by the COVID-19 pandemic in 2020.

Thanks to your generosity, Youth First could swiftly pivot to provide remote support and virtual resources, while our social work team also remained on the frontlines to distribute meals, reassure parents, and encourage teachers.

Simultaneously, our prevention programs continued helping kids and families manage the increased stress and build resiliency.

Thanks to your commitment, Youth First also has the resiliency and resources to meet the growing need for mental health supports. In 2019-20, we partnered with 80 schools in 10 Indiana counties, and in 2020-21, we grew to 92 schools in 11 counties.

Your investment in Youth First provides a safe harbor for thousands of young people, supporting them through unusually turbulent times and into healthier, productive futures.

Letter From the Board Chair Dear Friends of Youth First, I’ve always loved to make use of connections. When I think of Youth First, I think of HEART CONNECTIONS. Mr. Rogers had a Heart Connection when he said, “My hunch is that if we allow ourselves to give who we really are to the children in our care, we will in some way inspire cartwheels in their hearts.”

Now that is what I call a HEART CONNECTION! It’s sort of like thinking about how much stronger a rope is than the individual strands. Inside Youth First there are so many parts that work so well together. It all begins with the connectivity between the kids and the social workers and programs. You could either say it begins or ends here, but the rope is only as strong as the other strands, including you – our donors, volunteers, school partners, other community partners, policymakers, and more.

All of this effort is distributed through a HEART CONNECTION, hearts that care about OUR kids and their families. That connection has never been more important as we struggle through a

worldwide pandemic and all the stress. When Mr. Rogers was a boy, he would see scary things around him or in the news and his mother would say, “Look for helpers. You will always find people who are helping.” Youth First is full of helpers like you, the people who make sure kids are cared for and supported.

We hope you look through this Donor Impact Report and feel a major sense of accomplishment as well as excitement about your connection to Youth First. I feel blessed to have served as Board Chair in 2019-20. Thanks so much for supporting Youth First with your time, talent, and treasure.

Youth Served Al’s Pals CAST LifeSkills Training Reconnecting Youth Teen Series

Building SocialEmotional Skills & Developing Resiliency Al’s Pals Al’s Pals is a classroom program for children in preschool, kindergarten, and first grade. Through fun lessons, engaging puppets, original music and effective teaching approaches, teachers help students develop social and emotional skills such as self-control, peaceful problem-solving and healthy decision-making.

Al’s Pals promotes appreciation of differences and positive social relationships and seeks to prevent and address bullying behavior. It also conveys clear messages about the dangers of alcohol, tobacco and other drugs and works to build children’s abilities to make healthy choices and cope with life’s difficulties.

My 5-year old daughter struggles with some anxiety and meltdowns. The Al’s Pals program has been very beneficial for her. She is always excited to tell me what her class learned and even likes to recreate it at home. She has independently said, “I need to go count to three and calm down,” and then she goes to a quiet space and takes a little break. We are so thankful for this program and the tools it is providing for our daughter .

Programs

The Family First program enhances family bonds through building a healthy family environment. Featuring the Strengthening Families curriculum, Family First is offered free-of-charge to families with children ages 3-17. The focus is on improving parenting skills through bonding, setting boundaries, communication and fostering healthy brain development in children. The sessions also build on family strengths and developing loving family relationships that build cooperation. Youth sessions focus on building important communication and life skills.

Sessions that were underway in March 2020 were quickly and successfully converted to virtual programs, and participating families were given carry-out meals from local restaurants each week.

by Sean Covey, middle school students work toward improving self-confidence, self-control, personal responsibility, time management, positive decision-making and peer resistance skills.

Pandemic Pivots When school buildings closed in March 2020, Youth First immediately adjusted the sails and pivoted to provide remote support and virtual resources. Across 10 Indiana counties, Youth First Social Workers were on the front lines distributing meals and resources, reassuring families, and encouraging teachers.

They connected daily with students who had previously been identified as high need for mental health support, and they teamed up in pairs, safely visiting the homes of students who could not be reached by phone.

They started a weekly self-care group for teachers on Zoom, and they collaborated with the Youth First communications team to arm parents with social and emotional learning tools, accessible to anyone via Youth First’s website.

Even through the summer months, Youth First programs were delivered virtually and didn’t miss a beat thanks to COVID-19 crisis funding available across the counties we serve. Kids and families had access to the strategies needed to deal with stressors and challenges brought about by the pandemic.

Sunday, May 23, 2021 Join our Youth First team as we participate in Walking for Dreams, a family and pet walk along the Evansville Riverfront that raises needed funds to serve youth and families. The afternoon event includes family-friendly fun, live music, booths and giveaways.

Korn Ferry Tour Championship

September 2–5, 2021 Join Youth First at the seasonending Korn Ferry Tour Finals event, played at Victoria National Golf Club in Newburgh. Volunteers are the heart of the tournament, and there are many opportunities to get involved and support Youth First.

This signature event allows us to thank our donors, volunteers, and school partners who have contributed to Youth First’s growth. This past year marked our 13th event, and we were delighted to host our virtual 2020 Champions Celebration in which we honored our frontline heroes, Youth First Social Workers and Program Team, as the Dr. William Wooten Champions of Youth First.
