Letter from Leadership Dear Friends and Supporters, We celebrated a milestone this year when the 2,000th student to earn a diploma from YouthBuild Philly crossed the stage at our graduation ceremony. It was a milestone for that student, too. And like every graduate, she paused on stage to receive her diploma and shake a board member’s hand.

And then – smiling and moving her tassel from right to left – she kept walking, into the first moments of the rest of her life.

All of our students enroll at a critical juncture in their lives. Their time at YouthBuild is a turning point as they transition from “at-risk” youth into college-ready young professionals with a new vision of themselves and their future.

YouthBuild Philly is an accelerated diploma program – and while of course we love our annual commencement ceremonies –our vision involves so much more than caps and gowns and “Pomp and Circumstance.”

It is our hope that YouthBuild alumni will continue to thrive, learn, and lead in the days, weeks, and decades after graduation.

Every decision we make serves that longterm vision. We want students to keep walking forward after receiving their diploma - and they do. For the past several years, over 70% of our graduates have enrolled in college or found employment within six months of graduating.

We have developed valuable partnerships with dozens of other organizations, too. We are still committed to our core programming – academics, vocational training and service – but we are increasingly organizing and coordinating community resources for students as well. We are grateful to these partners for sharing our vision and helping us reach for the high standards we set for ourselves as a life-transforming organization.

We haven’t achieved this on our own.

To succeed as a student-centered program determined to transform lives, we strategically partner with other organizations, institutions and businesses that bring their own expertise and possibilities to our students. Over time we have built a network of supports and opportunities we can coordinate and tailor to each student’s needs, strengths and dreams.

The Saint-Gobain Corporation, for example, donates funding and building supplies so students can build green homes in lowincome neighborhoods. The 199C Training & Upgrading Fund trains healthcare students and prepares them for certification in the field. PowerCorps PHL offers a year-ofservice program to high school graduates (including ours) who want to build a career in public and community service.

OUR STUDENTS

YouthBuild Philly is committed to serving the full spectrum of high school dropouts, and makes special efforts to reach those most in need. Our targeted age range, 18-21, is a particularly underserved and vulnerable group – too old to reenroll in public high school and too young for most adult education programs.

In 2012, 973 young people applied to YouthBuild Philly for 215 spots.

We enrolled applicants who best demonstrated their motivation to seize the second chance that YouthBuild offers. YouthBuild does not screen for academic levels or past incidents. In fact, we take pride in serving these students and providing them with the skills and supports they need to be successful. Our student body has high and unique needs, including those detailed below.

CLASS OF 2013 STUDENT MESSAGE Derrick Bolton (at right), Class of 2013 Valedictorian

When I first entered the doors at YouthBuild, I knew my life was going to change. A couple of years ago, I didn’t think that I was going to make it as far as I have today - about to receive a diploma with plans to attend college in the fall. Back then, I was cutting school and running the streets. I was waiting on my stoop for life to happen to me instead of going out and getting it myself.

The other day at church, my preacher was talking about how a lot of us still can’t really access our bans. We have a brain, but we just can’t seem to tap into the knowledge that’s in it. And some of us need help doing so.

Unfortunately, some people think they’re too good to ask for help, even if they are really struggling. YouthBuild helped me use my brain in new ways.

To my classmates in the Class of 2013: The journey can’t stop here. A diploma isn’t enough. Don’t be scared to force yourself to do better. I challenge you to sacrifice the person who you were for who you are willing to become. You have proven that you are able to persevere through obstacles – there are always going to be challenges throughout life, but you can’t let them stop you. Always be excellent. Excellence is a lifestyle; excellence is who you became and who you should During the first couple of weeks at YouthBuild, continue to be.

I used to be quiet and I stayed to myself. I I’m thankful for this experience. I’m thankful was never the type of person to advocate for my son, who motivated me, for his mother for myself or go the extra mile. But as the who supported me in my journey to become school year went on, I got to communicate a better man, for my teachers who held me more and socialize with my teachers and to high standards, to Mr. Ron who taught peers because of the contagious energy that was at YouthBuild. It took me a while to find me how to be a professional, for my case manager who looked out for me and for the myself this year and I’m still not perfect. I still don’t know who I really am yet but I’m on support system that my class created. my way to finding out and I’m excited. When my son was born, though, I stopped waiting and depending on other to make my choices for me. I wanted to come – no, I needed to come – to YouthBuild because I knew how much love and guidance they would provide. And now with the help and guidance of teachers, staff, mentors and family members, I am no longer that kid on the stoop. I am the father paving the way for my son’s future.

PROGRAM HIGHLIGHTS

YouthBuild Philadelphia helps disconnected youth reclaim their education and become an asset to their community. Students split their time between the classroom and a worksite, and over the course of the year earn both a high school diploma and an industry-recognized certification in a vocational trade. All students are part-time AmeriCorps members, and learn their trade by participating in hands-on service projects that benefit the Philadelphia community.

Students spend half of their time at YouthBuild developing their reading, math and critical thinking skills to prepare them for a lifetime of learning. All students take classes in math, language arts, science, and social studies while at YouthBuild. Classes at YouthBuild are small, led by certified educators, and geared towards individual instruction. Teaching and assessment are structured around student’s acquisition of skills – or “competencies” – in each subject. Tutors and additional supports are readily available for all students who need them.

Service in the community is a core component of the YouthBuild program. Students participate in service learning throughout the year by learning about and addressing topics such as AIDS prevention and awareness, homelessness, low voter engagement, and food insecurity. Through service, students learn to take charge of their community’s future as well as their own.

Additionally, students serve their community while gaining valuable hands-on work experience in their vocational track.

Through YouthBuild’s vocational training program, students learn a trade while developing their professional communication and teamwork skills in a real-world setting. Building trades students rehabilitate abandoned houses; IT students repair computers for non-profits and schools; and healthcare students provide care to the elderly and sick. The opportunity to develop new and marketable skills – while making a significant difference in their community – helps students develop their career prospects as well as their confidence and self-worth.

As young adults, students at YouthBuild are encouraged to take ownership of their selfdevelopment and achieve self-sufficiency as students and citizens. To this end, case managers work with students to develop an individual assessment of their goals and a strategy to address the challenges – e.g., finances, housing, and relationships - that they face. Counseling is available for students facing mental health problems and difficult personal issues. Additionally, students are each paired with an in-house mentor who provides additional support, guidance, and encouragement.

As part-time AmeriCorps members students contributed 126,000 hours of service to the community this year.

Vocational Training Highlights

Building Trades students renovated a West Philadelphia house from top to bottom for a paraplegic man, making his house into his home. Others rebuilt the foundation for a church, strengthening the cornerstone of a community and a place for people to workshop. Another squad renovated an historic house in Fairmount Park so that its legacy - and the city’s history could be preserved.

Healthcare students provided hundreds of hours of care to hundreds of aging Philadelphians in nursing facilities throughout the city. Students gave residents comfort and skilled care, and treated them as whole people – not just as patients.

ITBA students (pictured above) continued the process of bridging the city’s digital divide by refurbishing used computers – 536 this year, to be exact – to help low-income Philadelphians connect to the Internet, access critical information, and use the modern communication methods that so many take for granted.

PREPARING FOR COLLEGE AND CAREERS Students’ success after YouthBuild is the most urgent and relevant measure of our program’s effectiveness. With this in mind, we strive to run a school that prepares students for a lifetime of learning, problem-solving, and leadership.

As soon as students enroll, YouthBuild Philly’s staff encourage and support students to explore, identify and plan for their postsecondary goals. Postsecondary skills that will serve students well in college and in the job market are integrated into the program and curriculum. Students have many opportunities learn about their career and education options through field trips, college visits, guest speakers, and partnerships with local employers.

In the summer months leading up to graduation, students who have completed their graduation requirements have the option of advancing into “bridge” programs hosted at partner institutions (such as Community College of Philadelphia and Thaddeus Stevens College of Technology) and staffed by YouthBuild team members. These bridges provide students the opportunity to advance into college classes or technical training programs while still receiving YouthBuild supports.

In the summer of 2013, YouthBuild piloted new bridge programs with Peirce College, Esperanza College, and the Finishing Trades Institute.

Supporting Graduates The Transitions Department at YouthBuild Philly helps graduates maintain momentum following their success at YouthBuild.

During their first year after graduation (which we refer to as their “year 2” with YouthBuild), alumni receive intensive, individualized support to ensure that their postsecondary placement goes well and that they are on track to achieve their long-term goals. Graduates receive assistance with job searches, college applications, and financial aid forms.

College-bound graduates are eligible to apply for scholarships from YouthBuild’s Scholarship Fund. These scholarships can be used for non-tuition expenses such as textbooks and educational technology.

GRADUATE PROFILE:

Larry Hudson, Class of 2013 From a young age, Larry Hudson ‘13 knew he wanted to go to college. Sadly, he also believed - based on what he saw on TV - that college was “a good dream, but just a dream.”

All the same, Larry didn’t let go of the dream, even while he was incarcerated for more than two years as a teenager. After his release, Larry enrolled at YouthBuild Philly, where he thrived in the Information Technology and Business Adminitration program. He found allies in the staff: instructors who were from his neighborhood and teachers who, he could tell, “saw something in me.”

“I wasn’t used to the individual attention,” Larry said, but at YouthBuild he stood out as a student and community leader. Within a few months he was taking math classes at the Community College of Philadelphia, and then spent the summer in Lancaster, Pennsylvania living and learning on-campus at Thaddeus Stevens College of Technology. At graduation, Larry received the YouthBuild Way Award for embodying all of YouthBuild Philly’s Core Values: Respect, Excellence, and Perseverance. At the ceremony, Director of Student Life Ameen Akbar remarked: “Larry is an extremely positive young man, who is always willing to work hard to be successful. He took a leadership role at YouthBuild, and helped his classmates along the way. He was always willing to share his notes with his fellow teammates. He continued to encourage absentee students by calling them and getting them to come to school. Larry always participated in leading the community meetings, service projects, the talent show and presentations of learning.

He took on every challenge with a smile. “ At the time of this report’s publication, Larry has finished his first year of college at Stevens College. He has identified a major - Eletcrical Technology - and found a mentor in the department who is also from Philadelphia. He is spending the summer working as an electrician at a hotel in Norristown, Pennsylvania to continue learning his chosen trade and save up money to buy more tools.

Larry is also mentoring Class of 2014 YouthBuild students who plan to enroll at Stevens College. “I like to remind them that they came up here for a reason,” he says, “and tell them not to let anything interfere with that, and never take the opportunity for granted.”

When he graduates in May 2015 from Stevens College, Larry plans to work for several years in manufacturing before starting his own business. His dream is to employ people that he describes as “like me - people who used to be misguided and are coming in from the streets” - and give them new opportunities.

LEADERS REBUILDING

COMMUNITIES In April 2013, YouthBuild Philly hosted the Philadelphia ceremony celebrating the firstever Mayors Day of Recognition for National Service. The ceremony - hosted by Mayor Michael Nutter - featured distinguished guests U.S. Senator Harris Wofford and Corporation for National and Community Service CEO Wendy Spencer. At the event, a select number of nominated AmeriCorps members and alumni received awards from the Mayor in recognition of their commitment to service.

YouthBuild Philly student Dominique BrownRasley was among the “Mayor’s Award for Distinguished National Service” recipients.

Dominique exemplifies YouthBuild Philly’s vision of service, having transformed her difficult childhood experiences into a calling to serve her community. Inspired by YouthBuild Philly’s regular “community meetings” - where students and staff process conflicts and recognize each other’s resilience and hard work - Dominique spearheaded the use of community meetings at a nearby Project H.O.M.E. residence, and singlehandedly organized an awards ceremony for residents.

Honoring the Legacy of Dr. King For many in the U.S., Martin Luther King Day is thought of as a day off from school or work. At YouthBuild Philly, however, it’s one of our biggest days on. Service in the community is a core element of YouthBuild Philly’s program, and we were excited to partner with the Greater Philadelphia MLK Day of Service again this year by hosting several projects at W.C. Longstreth Elementary in Southwest Philadelphia.

More than 200 YouthBuild students, staff and volunteers came together on MLK Day 2013 to repaint the school’s cafeteria, stairwells, hallways and library.

“It feels good to give back to my community,” said Danielle, a YouthBuild student who lives near Longstreth. “It excites me to think of the children’s faces when they see their new cafeteria.”

PARTNERSHIP HIGHLIGHTS Breaking Ground in Nicetown Since 2010, YouthBuild Philly has partnered with YouthBuild USA and building materials manufacturer Saint-Gobain to renovate abandoned properties into affordable and sustainable family homes.

After successfully transforming a neighborhood eyesore in Germantown into a LEED Platinum home in 2012, the partnership doubled down in 2013 with a groundbreaking ceremony at two adjoining properties in the Nicetown section of North Philadelphia. Over the next two years, students enrolled at YouthBuild will transform both properties into LEED-targeted homes.

W

hat I like most about being at YouthBuild is feeling like I am a part of something important. Everyone wants to feel connected to other people and to do something meaningful. Being on the Green Construction Team and building a house for someone is a perfect example of how YouthBuild helps me feel like I am part of a community and that I can make a difference.

Building homes has also taught me about excellence, which is one of YouthBuild’s core values. When you are building a home where someone’s going to be living, you want everything to be on point.

Additionally, Saint-Gobain and YouthBuild USA help us build excellent homes. On the Green Team, I’ve learned about how technology and green-building can help homeowners save money and reduce their environmental impact. A green home benefits the homeowner, and the whole world.

Knowing that my classmates and I have the skills to take a house that looks like this and turn it into a real home for a family who needs it makes me feel good about

myself. It makes me feel good about my work and about what I can accomplish. It’s made me realize that I’m capable of things I never knew I could do. This year, I am starting to understand what people mean when they talk about my potential. I am starting to get a picture in my head of everything that I can be.

What’s great about being on the Green Team is that we not only have personal support from YouthBuild, but we also have that support from Saint-Gobain. Earlier this year Saint-Gobain invited the Green Team to visit their offices in Valley Forge, and their employees shared career and life advice with us. I want to thank them again for that. I was inspired by their stories, and felt excited for my future after that conversation.

This summer, I will be starting a welding apprenticeship and graduating from YouthBuild Philadelphia. My plan is to keep working in the building trades, and to continue my education so that I can build on my success this year.

Students Learn Welding Through Pilot Partnership During the summer months leading up to graduation, a select cohort of thirteen students began a welding program at the Finishing Trades Institute in Northeast Philadelphia. Students who successfully completed the program were eligible to participate in a preapprenticeship program through FTI and continue working towards a career in welding, a field noted for good wages and high demand.

YouthBuild Philly Featured in National Giving Competition In November, Chase Community Giving announced that YouthBuild Philly was one of 25 non-profits nationwide nominated to win an American Giving Award at a nationally televised event in Los Angeles.

In addition to sharing YouthBuild’s vision, mission, and student stories with millions of TV viewers, the American Giving Awards also offered each nominee the opportunity to win funding from Chase. Winners were determined by online voting through Facebook.

Although we did not win funding through the voting process, we have much to be thankful for. Thousands of people around the world voted for YouthBuild and shared our mission with others, and this publicity will help more people learn about and connect to our program.
