Salford docks and Pomona Docks were built by the Manchester Ship Canal Company. They both made up the Manchester docks which was then opened in 1894 by Queen Victoria.

The Manchester Ship Canal was very important as a connection to the world however Salford fell into decline as the docks were declined by manufacturing due to the modern container ships being too large. In the 1970s, around 3,000 people lost their jobs.

In 1983, Salford City Council acquired parts of the docks from the Manchester Ship Canal Company. The area was rebranded as Salford Quays and redevelopment began in 1985 under the Salford Quays Development Plan. The infrastructure was changed to have internal waterway networks which was constructed beteween 1986 and 1990. Roads and bridges were added on and the landscape was modified and designed. watersport activities are now available to do aswell as visiting shopping centre, cinema and hotels. Public funding and private investment costed around £280 million by the early 1990s.

Salford Quays is an area of Salford which is located in Greater Manchester, England. iIt is at the end of the Manchester ship canal which were previously used as the Manchester Docks. After the closure of the dockyards in 1982, the site was then changed and became one of UK’s first and largest urban regeneration project. 1797 1845
