Last year, my family was excited to move back to San Jose, my hometown. In an effort to find childcare for my 4-month-old, I began reaching out to daycares. I called 30 providers, just to be told that there was no space or they couldn’t accept infants. One person even laughed and wished me “Good luck.” I was close to tears and worried that maybe my family had made the wrong decision.
But I’m so glad I made that 31st call to YWCA. I enrolled my baby on-the-spot when I witnessed their clean space, happy children, and diversity within their staff and clientele. Best of all, I could afford this quality care!
Then, unexpectedly, I received the difficult news that I had lost my job within the first week of moving to San Jose. I realized my savings would run out quickly. I recognized that I still needed childcare in order to once again start the process of applying for jobs and attending interviews. I didn’t know how I would manage it all. Lucille (YWCA’s Child Care Director), knew something was wrong when I came to pick up my baby. She listened and said, “We will figure it out.” Again, I was close to tears, but this time I was encouraged because I felt cared for and hopeful.
Thanks to YWCA’s support to identify community resources, my family qualified for subsidized child care while I searched for a new job. Today, I am employed full time in a stable, fulfilling career. My baby is now a curious, social, and thriving toddler under YWCA’s influence.
