ear Readers,

Happy New Year! Happy Ground Hog Day! Happy President’s Day! Happy Valentine’s Day! Happy... Snow Days? If you are like me, you are looking out the window at the obligatory snow-apocalypse we have here in Williamson County — and have come to expect at some point after the first of the year. And, if you are like me, you are scratching your head wondering where all those big plans, big resolutions, big goals, set in the throes of the thrill of a new year, went. Well…after a week stuck inside with the kids, after only JUST getting back to school, back to work and back to normal… One’s brain returns to binge TV mush pretty quickly, and away from all those formidable goals. Alas, I keep reminding myself that the new year is just a date, just a block on a calendar we use as a benchmark for our improvement, clarity and life betterment, annually. But the reality is that those things can actually happen any time, any day and even during a snowstorm. So, don’t lose hope and don’t lose sight of those big new year’s plans. Rather than wax poetic on the snow, or the new year — I leave you here, with a bit more inspiring words…of love — much more in keeping with this issue in the season of Valentine’s Day and filled with our annual bridal content; in the words of Elizabeth Barrett Browning (1806-1861). Her Sonnets from the Portuguese, which she dedicated to her husband Robert Browning, were written in secret before their marriage and published in 1850. Critics generally consider the Sonnets one of the most widely known collections of love lyrics in English and her best work. Enjoy.

MAMA J’S JOURNEY TO SURVIVOR BY KATIE MURPHY | PHOTOGRAPHY PROVIDED BY CBS

he hit CBS television series Survivor returned for its 45th season, and it featured a special cast member from right here in Williamson County. Julie Alley, more affectionately known as “Mama J,” was known on Survivor as the upbeat and lively mother of two who was part of the highly successful Reba Team. Mama J gave us some exclusive insight into her life in Williamson County and journey on Survivor! In Julie’s own words, “I’m a unicorn!” Born and raised in Williamson County, Julie attended

and graduated from Brentwood Academy. She moved around very little in her life and ended up settling into what once was her grandparents’ house here in Brentwood. Julie raised her two children here, both of whom graduated from Brentwood High School. Of her thoughts on Williamson County, Julie says, “I love everything about it! Williamson County is a great familyoriented, safe place for people to grow up.” Julie always knew she would end up on Survivor; it was just about the timing. She says, “It’s funny when I was applying to Survivor, my daughter’s

like, ‘Mom, people like us don’t make it on Survivor.’ And I was like, ‘Why not me?’ We got ourselves all pumped up, and then she helped me finish my audition tape!” Julie’s path to Survivor was all about manifesting. And she did just that. Her preparation for Survivor began long before officially accepting the opportunity. “I do Orange Theory, and I run with my dog. When I didn’t make it the first time, I just kept going. I did a half marathon, and I was like, ‘Let’s get in shape, let’s get strong.’ So, physicality, that was

a goal of mine.” She committed to a fitness routine, cutting out sugar and carbs, stating, “I didn’t want to be addicted to anything.” Julie’s preparation for Survivor was a family affair. She says, “I have a big family. I have my brothers, son and daughter. We’d sit down, and I’d go, ‘What’s the plan?’ We’ve all watched it.” Julie was able to work on her strategy for the game with her family, and she held on to that throughout the entire season. She attributes her impressive fifth-place finish to the luck that she felt throughout the game. She was a part of the highly successful 20 | WINTER 2024

Reba Team on Survivor. They were known for their dominant alliance throughout the season, and Julie was an original group member. She says, “To put me on that Reba team, I mean, I think I got more rewards than anyone. I still think I did a lot with the luck that I was given.” She also made sure to stick to her pre-designed strategy, no matter what. “I went with strategy in mind. It was hard. I’d get out there, and emotions would want to take over. But then, I’d go back to pre-game Julie, who was well-fed and had slept, and thought, ‘What is she thinking?’ And I’d know she is reminding me to be strategic, smart, and take out your biggest threat.” Recognized for her exceptional social skills during the game, Julie emphasizes the lasting bonds formed with her fellow contestants. “We are trauma-bonded, and we will be for life. I think the bonding, the betrayal, the experience bonded us. Any of them could call me, and I think we could probably talk for days. Now I have seventeen other people that normally would take a lifetime for me to get that close to, and they’re in my group now…And that opened my life like I couldn’t have imagined,” says Julie. Reflecting on how Survivor has changed her, Julie shares, “I could get emotional thinking about it; I’m proud of myself. I kept true to how I wanted to play. I’m proud, and that changed me.”

Heart disease remains the leading cause of death in the United States, but Williamson Health offers a wide variety of cardiovascular care options to help you take control of your heart health, from monitoring and evaluating risk to identifying blockages and placing stents. “Our mission is to provide excellent care right here in our community,” said Brian Long, M.D., an interventional cardiologist with Vanderbilt Health and the chief of cardiology for Williamson Health. “In addition, patients who have significant heart problems and/or heart disease should have a cardiologist close to home, which provides more streamlined care and lessens the inconvenience of travel.” Williamson Health’s broad range of heart health services includes a gold-standard chest pain center, two state-of-the-art, on-site heart catheterization labs, cardiac stress testing, cardiac and pulmonary rehab programs and more. As part of the historic renovation and expansion project at Williamson Medical Center (WMC), the hospital is also adding a new electrophysiology (EP) lab later this year, allowing the cardiac team to treat heart patients with rhythm problems better. If you’re looking to improve your heart health, Dr. Long offered a few tips: • VISIT YOUR PRIMARY CARE PHYSICIAN REGULARLY. “Preventative cardiology is primarily in the hands of primary care doctors who monitor and screen for all the things we can improve

upon to lower the risk of developing heart disease,” Dr. Long said. These factors include high blood pressure, high cholesterol, weight and diabetes. CONSIDER GETTING A CORONARY CALCIUM SCORE SCREENING. “A coronary calcium screening is a simple, quick test we use to see if a patient has any signs of heart disease,” Dr. Long said. The scan helps determine if a patient has atherosclerosis, the build-up of plaque in their arteries, which can lead to heart problems. “It’s a great test for someone who wants to know where they stand or if they might be developing heart disease,” Dr. Long said. DEAL WITH THE TREATABLE CAUSES OF HEART DISEASE. “A healthy lifestyle is very important, so two things you can focus on every day are diet and exercise,” Dr. Long said. Eat a heart-healthy diet rich in vegetables, lean meats and whole grains, and strive for at least twenty-five to thirty minutes of aerobic exercise four or more days a week, Dr. Long advised. KNOW YOUR FAMILY HISTORY. Patients who have parents or siblings who’ve developed heart disease in middle age or beyond may be at a higher risk of developing heart disease. If you have a family history of heart disease, be proactive about heart screenings. “We can’t change our genetics,” Dr. Long said, “but it’s good to be aware of these factors because they can help guide how we handle treatable risk factors.”

What you need to know: • It’s a simple, non-invasive test for asymptomatic people ages forty to seventy-five that checks for calcium buildup in patients’ hearts. • Appointments are limited, and credit/debit card payment is required when scheduling. • Screenings are performed at the Williamson Health Imaging Center, 3000 Edward Curd Lane, in the Bone and Joint Institute building. • A physician referral is not required, but the primary care physician’s contact information is requested for follow-up. • Results are mailed to the patient and primary care physician within 48 hours. Her passion for the wedding industry and helping couples plan their day while avoiding seeking numerous vendors all over town, is how the all-inclusive event venue came to be. Learn more about CJ in this edition’s interview. How long have you lived in Williamson County? CD: My husband and I moved to Franklin in 2004 when I started CJ’s

SWEETEN UP WINTER WITH PEAR CARDAMOM BUTTER BY LINDSAY LANDIS | LOVE & OLIVE OIL

ere’s a unique condiment you never knew you needed until now: cardamom pear butter.

A fruit butter is a naturally-set jam made from pureed fruit that has been cooked down and sweetened. It has a smooth consistency somewhat like applesauce. This sweet pear version is lightly spiced with fragrant cardamom, cinnamon, and cloves, but feel free to mix up the spices to your liking. I suggest a vanilla bean or some orange zest perhaps, or even a glug of pear brandy or rum. You can also increase or decrease the sugar to your personal tastes. As for how to enjoy pear butter, treat it almost like applesauce. Obviously, it’s lovely on morning toast or smeared on a warm buttered English muffin, but it’ll also go great on your holiday charcuterie board as an accompaniment for aged cheeses and cured meats. You can also use it as a glaze on grilled or roasted meats like chicken or pork, as an applesauce alternative generously spooned over potato latkes or baked into sweet and salty oatmeal cookie crumb bars. Oh, and do me a favor and please spread it inside your next grilled cheese

sandwich—the sweetness of the pear beautifully contrasts the rich, melty cheese and buttery toasted bread. You may never eat another plain grilled cheese again! Not sure what kind of pears to buy? Sweet, fruity varieties like Bartlett or Anjou make the most flavorful preserves. Find the ripest, juiciest fruit you can, as that flavor will pass on to your fruit butter. You can also use apples or a mix of apples and pears in this recipe! I believe that every season is canning season, and I’ve got plenty of recipes for winter jams and jellies to prove it: From cranberry sauce to apple jelly to any citrus marmalade, and even some non-fruit recipes like ginger marmalade and balsamic jelly that sound unusual but, I promise you, are incredibly delicious. Even if you’re not into canning, all the recipes can be made and stored in the refrigerator or freezer. Pear Cardamom Butter Makes 3 cups INGREDIENTS: 2 pounds or about 6 to 7 medium pears 1 cup filtered or spring water 2 cups granulated sugar (more or less to taste)

2 tablespoons lemon juice 1/2 teaspoon ground cardamom 1/2 teaspoon ground cinnamon pinch of ground cloves

METHOD: 1. Core and quarter pears, removing any obvious bruises or blemishes. Place pears in a large, heavy saucepan with water. Cover and simmer over medium-high heat until softened, about 15 minutes. 2. Run cooked pears through a food mill, discarding skins and seeds. You should have 2 1/2 cups of prepared fruit. (If you don’t have a food mill, peel, core, and chop pears before cooking, then mash using a potato masher as they soften for a chunkier final product. You can also pulse briefly in a food processor if you want a smoother consistency.) 3. Return fruit to a saucepan and bring to a simmer. Add sugar (use more or less sugar depending on your preferences and the sweetness of your fruit) along with lemon juice and spices and simmer, stirring occasionally, for about fifteen to twenty minutes or until noticeably thickened. At this point, it will have an applesauce-like consistency, but you can cook it down even more for an even thicker texture and more caramelized flavor

if you like. 4. Pear butter can be stored in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to 2 weeks, frozen for up to 2 months, or water bath processed in jam jars and stored at room temperature for up to a year.

n 2010, Kerrie Hileman, a newly engaged accountant, found herself frustrated with the lack of wedding gown options in her hometown of Jacksonville, Florida. No privacy or personal touches made wedding dress shopping more like a chore than the unique experience she hoped for. And in that moment, an idea was born – Kerrie decided to start her own bridal boutique. Several months later, The White Magnolia opened its doors for the first time in Jacksonville. On a girl’s weekend in 2014, Kerrie met fellow accountant Mallory Thorburn through mutual friends. After detailing her own disappointing experiences shopping for a wedding dress, the two joined forces. Mallory and Kerrie became official co-owners of the business and, in the same year, opened The White Magnolia in Atlanta. With Mallory by her side and a third store in the fold, Kerrie felt ready to grow The White Magnolia even more, confident she had the formula, tools, and experience to branch out into additional markets. The Greenville store opened in 2016, followed by Palm Beach and Savannah in 2019. Though each store has a similar overall aesthetic, they are not simple carbon copies of each other. Mallory oversees each store’s design and overall feel and strives to make each store unique to its market. Inventory is similar between stores but not identical, as Kerrie and Mallory adjust gowns and designers based on exclusivity and market research. In October 2021, the seventh White Magnolia boutique opened its doors in Franklin. Located in historic downtown, The White Magnolia has become one of Franklin’s favorite neighbors. athy Thomas has crafted an impressive reputation in the dynamic world of wedding photography. She worked her way up through the fashion retail industry to become a high-level operation and talent acquisition expert for Lucky Brand Jeans and Louis Vuitton. Shortly after Kathy’s own wedding, she invested in a camera and began her self-taught photography quest, which would land her leaving luxury retail to start her next adventure as a solopreneur as she created Kathy Thomas Photography in 2013. Ten years later, Kathy has built KTP into a seven-figure global brand. KTP operates out of studios in both Nashville and Orlando, with a clientele line-up from Music Legends, NFL and NBA players, luxury brands, Olympic athletes, and wedding and lifestyle clients worldwide. Kathy founded KTP in Orlando, Florida, but the brand developed into its current global company after relocating to Nashville in 2017. What advice do you have for couples who are struggling to pick a photography style? KT: Great question. I believe it’s easy to get wrapped up in the details in

photographs that leave couples swooning over gowns, shoes and venue. They get visually entertained by the things versus the style of the photography. With that observation, I would recommend couples look for a style that they aren’t only attracted to now but will feel proud to have as their final product in five or ten years. With editing and style trends in photography changing monthly, it’s easy for couples to get wrapped up in the now and forget their wedding photography should, in my opinion, be as timeless as their marriage.

What advice do you have for couples on their wedding day regarding photography?

KT: Your connection with your photography team is as

important as the images they will create for you. I recommend finding someone you trust, feel confident having with you during intimate moments, and, most importantly, a photographer who takes the time to understand your wedding vision.

What questions should couples ask their potential wedding photographers? KT: I believe the questions you should ask your photographer will vary greatly based on the level of talent you choose to hire for your wedding. A great rule of thumb is to adjust expectations based on the investment you are making for the person responsible for documenting all the details, emotions, portraits, chaos, and intimate moments that make up your day. If you plan to make a small investment in photography, you may have to adjust your expectations. A few things that may be important to ask are: How many team members will they bring on the day of? Does the photographer cover welcome parties, rehearsal dinners and other wedding activities? What is the expected post-processing turnaround time to receive your full wedding gallery? Is the photographer insured? What plan does your photographer have to ensure exceptional indoor REAL . LOCAL . | 45

and outdoor images, and most importantly, do they have a rain plan? How do they plan to manage the day to document all moments and formalities? When selecting a wedding venue, what aspects should brides consider to ensure it complements their photography preferences? If you have more than one photographer, do they plan to split up during the wedding to cover all activities?

How important is the location when choosing a wedding venue for photography? KT: The most important aspect of the location is your desired wedding

photography style and whether your photography team can execute that style in the venue you select. Also, ensure there is space on the property to photograph large wedding parties, family groupings, and newlywed photos that fit your needs. Considering photography style: If you desire dark and moody, light and airy, modern and editorial, that will be greatly affected by the location, venue, and style of photography in that environment. Booking a natural light photographer at a ballroom or church wedding may not yield the desired results you wish.

Are there specific or underrated moments during the wedding day that couples should make sure their photographer captures? KT: Weddings are unique to every couple; sharing your wedding vision with your photographer will help them be better prepared to document small moments that tell the story of your celebration while also photographing the formal events. One mistake I often find couples make is planning their ceremony time before considering whether they want newlywed and family photos during daylight hours or at night. Another thing to consider for outdoor ceremonies is how the sunlight affects the light on the couple and wedding guests, as this can alter the outcome of images significantly if the sunlight is harsh on certain parts or people during the ceremony.

What are some common mistakes couples make when it comes to wedding photography, and how can they avoid them? 46 |

KT: Not properly planning your photography timeline to

fulfill all the moments the couple wants documented. Failing to have a candid conversation on how much time photography will take during the wedding day. Not having planned out family group photos and sharing those combinations with your photographer. Trusting your photographer on the decisions they make for the day to ensure you have extraordinary photos. Photographers must take into consideration lighting, background, time to move spaces, and so much more. Trust them!

How can couples incorporate their personal style and preferences into the overall theme of their wedding photography? KT: By hiring a photographer that fits their style. If you desire

dark and moody, research photographers who produce this type of editing. Couples who want candid shots only and want the photographer to be behind the scenes the entire time are a particular niche photography style, so finding someone who does documentary style well would fulfill their needs. My clients hire me for my editorial, candid imagery with my modern style of editing. They want clean images that are dynamic and reflect the colors and emotions of the day in their purest form.

Is there any other advice you’d like to give based on your experience? KT: TRUST your photographer! You will have your images forever; this will be the only time you are documenting your love story with all your loved one’s present.

hile modern diamond guides focus on the 4Cs (color, clarity, cut and carat weight), these guidelines didn’t exist a century ago— the minimum age for a piece to be considered antique. In the realm of antique gems and jewels, where each piece whispers tales of bygone eras, the rules of modern diamond selection take a delightful departure.

Unlike today’s guidelines, turn-of-the-century jewelers relied on a keen eye and a trained hand. Before the Industrial Revolution and the advances it brought along in stone cutting and metal smithing, each gem was shaped and set by hand to optimize its play of light. Two cuts, in particular, were exceptionally common for diamonds of the time: Old Mine and Old European.

Before the invention of modern gemological tools and using little more than a magnifying lens, descriptions of gemstone clarity and color were broad. A diamond might be considered “eye clean,” while a ruby could be described as having “feathery” inclusions. These generalizations were often used when describing gemstone color as well with no formal colorgrading scale existing at the time.

Old Mine cut diamonds, most commonly faceted during the Georgian and Victorian periods (1700s to 1800s), feature a distinct cushion shape, while Old European cut diamonds, faceted between 1880 and 1930, became more symmetrically round—and cutters were no longer limited by the octahedral shape of the rough diamond. While the international carat was introduced in the 1870s and many stones would have been measured in the same weight standard they would be today, there’s a bit of a challenge... Once the gemstones are set into jewelry, it takes an expert to give an accurate estimate, which is one of the many reasons why working with a trained jewelry professional such as a GIA Graduate Gemologist is so important when buying antique jewelry.

What other factors are important when selecting antique jewelry? Jewelry is so much more than simply something you wear. It is precious adornment, and in the case of an antique engagement ring, it’s an embodiment of history’s romance and celebration of love’s endurance. It seems only natural then, that such a personal article would require significant consideration of the persons involved in acquiring any newto-you jewelry.

1. Lifestyle

Consider how the engagement ring fits into your everyday life. While a high-profile setting may be perfect for a bling-loving bride, the same design may not work for someone with an active lifestyle. A low-profile setting can offer comfort without sacrificing sparkle.

When I think about those gentlemen in our community who make it so special by their involvement, leadership and giving back to make it better, Robert immediately comes to mind. Always smiling, always courteous and always involved, I asked Robert to tell us a little bit more about himself, what motivates him, and what it means to be a Southern Gentleman.

RB: I have lived in Franklin all my life. I love being downtown and seeing

rank Wycheck is one of the ten most important people in the first twenty-five years of the Tennessee Titans. And not just for the reasons that you might think.

Before the team had ever played a snap in this state in 1997, Frank became the organization’s #1 go-to guy in the Nashville community. He spoke at banquets, appeared at ticketing events, and did every single media appearance possible. It was too much to ask of one player, but Frank Wycheck did it, and he did it all. Frank’s efforts to give a face and a personality to the Tennessee Oilers were unmatched and vitally important. That off-the-field work laid the foundation for the amazing response to Frank’s spectacular on-field play. Sixty-plus catches and 600-plus yards receiving in five straight seasons. Three Pro Bowls. Clutch play after clutch play. And of-course, that throw on the Music City Miracle. Frank’s remarkable athleticism allowed him to run right, leap into the air and accurately throw a pass to his left over thirty yards. Just crazy. That backwards pass made him forever famous in NFL lore and Frank liked that. It would always give him a chance to remind you he had a perfect 158.3 career passer rating! Frank played the game with a chip on his shoulder. After being cut by Washington in 1995, he feared being cut every season. That fear always fueled him. So did his Philadelphia roots. And you heard those roots when he moved to a career in radio. Because you never had to ask Frank Wycheck for his opinion. Ever. If something bothered Frank, he was happy to tell you. And his takes were of the “shoot first, ask questions later” variety.

When we lost Frank Wycheck on December 9th, the first thoughts went to his family, especially the ones that we came to know best, his daughters and his brother Teddy. And in this heartbreaking moment, we hope that they will remember how many people loved Frank Wycheck. For whatever role that he played in their lives — even if they didn’t know him personally— think about the hundreds of thousands of people that loved him. I hope that Frank Wycheck knew that, too. I am certain that he knows that now.

TURNING PAGES THREE FAVORITE READS OF 2023

ast January, I set a goal to read fifty books. As the calendar turned to 2024, I began my fifty-fourth book. I consider myself a “mood reader” and choose my next book based on my feelings rather than from a predetermined list or pile. Included in my goal for 2023 was an intention to read books outside of my comfort zone. I have found that being a member of multiple book clubs and being open to recommendations from other readers has allowed me to discover books and authors I may not have found otherwise. For example, I read American Gods by Neil Gaiman, a book that I would not have selected had it not been for a friend suggesting it to our book club. The fifty-three books I read last year were a collection of historical fiction, autobiographies, non-fiction, thrillers, contemporary fiction, and romance, many of which are trending on #booktok. I read many fabulous books, but here are my three favorites from 2023.

ounded in 2006, within the embrace of a local church, The Well Outreach originated as a humble food pantry motivated by a heartfelt mission to manifest God’s love through the provision of sustenance to those facing adversity. In 2009, fueled by an unwavering commitment and a recognition of the growing need, The Well Outreach took a significant stride forward, incorporating as its own 501(c)(3) nonprofit entity. Over the years, The Well Outreach has undergone a transformative journey, evolving from a modest church initiative to a robust, communitydriven nonprofit organization. The Spring Hill community, alongside its neighboring areas, has played a pivotal role in this evolution, offering unwavering support and remarkable generosity. The organization stands today as a beacon of hope, a testament to the power of communal compassion, with numerous individuals, churches, civic organizations and businesses joining hands to contribute regularly. This collective spirit has enabled The Well Outreach to extend its reach, ensuring that no household in the community goes without food. Last year, it served 7,000 families through its Food Pantry and, in 2023, that number skyrocketed to an impressive 13,000 families. The organization has experienced remarkable growth, going from feeding 2,400 families in 2019 to over 13,000 families in the present year. The Well Outreach will also be launching a second food pantry in Mt. Pleasant, boasting a 16,000 square foot facility. Their upcoming event, “A Night of Hope,” takes place on February 10th at World Wide Stages in Spring Hill. The event features performances by award-winning Christian music artist Michael W. Smith and Helen Smallbone, mother of KING & COUNTRY, and Rebecca St. James, who will be the guest speaker. How did you got started in the music industry?

MWS: I started playing piano at home in Kenova, West Virginia,

and just loved it. Really started out here in Nashville with a band called HIGHER GROUND in the early 80s. I then met my friend, Amy Grant, and started playing keys and writing songs with her. From there, the rest is really history. My managers, Dan Harrell and Mike Blanton took out a loan and created Reunion Records to help me create

my first album, PROJECT. That album included the song FRIENDS.

What inspired you to pursue a career in Christian music specifically?

What advice would you give to aspiring musicians, particularly those entering the Christian music scene?

MWS: I really grew up in the Jesus Movement

time. I grew up in the church and loved artists like Second Chapter of Acts, Larry Norman and many others. So, that’s where my heart was. I wanted to write songs about Jesus and encourage, but with a pop sensibility. It’s what I love to do; nothing is better than sharing the good news with people.

How do you feel your music has evolved over the years?

MWS: My music changes with what I’m

listening to at the time, but also I just like to create and be inspired by what’s happening in the world. I love worship music. I love pop music. All of it.

Where do you draw inspiration from?

MWS: My inspiration as of late is from my

family. Watching my kids becomes parents. Watching the awe and wonder of my grandkids. The world that they’re growing up in. It’s a tough place, but I love learning from all of them and writing songs in that space.

Is there a dream collaboration you haven’t yet had the opportunity to pursue?

MWS: My musical

hero is John Williams. All the way back to the first time I sat in a movie theater watching “Raiders of the Lost Ark,” which I must have seen twenty times. It’s just awesome. I’ve done two instrumental/ orchestral albums that have been inspired by his

I think next, I’ll be working on something that’s more POP than some of the worship music that I’ve been playing - but right now, I’m just looking forward to my upcoming Spring Tour, FOREVER. The night at “A Night of Hope” will be a great night for the band and I to play a non-Christmas show for all of you and really get cranked up for our upcoming tour.

How did you become involved with The Well Outreach?

MWS: The Well does amazing work serving families in middle Tennessee with a too-often unseen problem: hunger. Right here. In our backyard. I’m honored to be invited to be part of their “A Night of Hope” concert, where they’re rolling out their new plan to build a seconddoor pantry in Mt. Pleasant. They’re going to serve thousands of people in need. It’s going be awesome! What are you looking forward to most with The Well Outreach’s “A Night of Hope” event?

MWS: More than anything, I love performing

with my bad for people who are loving on other people. We’ll worship. We’ll sing. It’s going to be a great night.

Harmonies of Hope MARTINA MCBRIDE TO HEADLINE “THE STORIES BEHIND THE SONGS” BY ANNA ROBERTSON HAM

rammy® nominee Martina McBride is set to headline the 2nd Annual “The Stories Behind the Songs” fundraiser on February 21st at The Franklin Theatre. The event promises an intimate musical experience featuring Martina alongside singersongwriters The Warren Brothers and Leslie Satcher. The evening is dedicated to supporting the 21st District Recovery Court’s mission to break the cycle of addiction and crime in the community. Recovery Court, funded solely through grants and donations without any taxpayer support, has been making a significant impact for twenty-one years. The program, designed for non-violent offenders in the criminal justice system, emphasizes accountability and compassion. All proceeds from the event will directly contribute to Recovery Court’s ongoing efforts. The organization’s funding model underscores its reliance on community support, with the singer-songwriter night being one of just two annual fundraisers in 2024. Martina McBride is a Grammy-nominated artist with over twenty million albums sold and boasts twenty Top Ten singles and six #1 hits. Martina told us that she, The Warren Brothers and Leslie Satcher have collaborated many times, including in songwriting and shows. “We’ve done events together and it’s always so much fun, because they’re all three such great storytellers and such great people,” Martina says. “Having that history together really makes it so much more meaningful when you all are on stage - and that way to connect with each other and the audience. So that’s really impactful for sure.” Martina says she felt drawn to be a part of the 21st District Recovery Court’s songwriter event after Brett called her about it and asked her to participate. “Any time they are involved in something, I know it’s important and authentic and worthy. And when I get to do anything with The Warren Brothers and Leslie Satcher, it is just bound to be a good time,” she explains. “This is such a unique and wonderful organization. It’s just going to be a beautiful, fun night of music and stories and go to help an amazing organization.” Martina has hits from “Independence Day” to “This One’s For The Girls” and “In My Daughter’s Eyes” - which she has seen be very impactful. “I love ‘This One’s For The Girls’ because it’s multi-generational. I see young girls on TikTok singing that song, and I’m like…this is so cool! It’s one of those ballads that I don’t think will ever go away. It’s very validating,” Martina says.

“The legacy of songs that I’ve left behind - that seem to have resonated with people and mattered - that’s just what you wish for. You want to leave behind something that mattered.”

Aside from her meaningful songs, Martina feels it is important to give back. She has her own charitable organization, Team Music Is Love, which is her global charity initiative dedicated to making the world better through the power of music - bringing people and music together to do good. “It’s just important to try.
