Dear Readers,

One of the resounding and repeated messages throughout this issue, in multiple different stories, is the idea of making memories. Whether it be from an annual pilgrimage to your friend’s home to celebrate traditions and fellowship, or the idea of memories being created from the foods we eat and love. As I looked closer at almost every story and feature in this issue, the overwhelming theme was about making memories and where most of those originate... Home.

Not too surprising, of course, since this is our annual Real Estate & Home Edition, but the deeper meaning of that and how it intertwined its way into every element of this publication, resonates. For home is where the heart is and where our most basic of life memories emanate. Whether it’s a backyard and the memory of children laughing in the sprinkler; the conversations around the Thanksgiving dinner table with all manner of family members present; the frustration of a school morning; the scariness of a midnight nightmare; holidays, birthday parties, bringing baby home from the hospital; a gathering after a loved one’s passing; the list truly could go on and on of the memories made within the four walls of where we call home.

More than a structure, it’s a living breathing backdrop to our story, much like our hometown and our community provide the stage. So true, as I also revel in this issue - seeing the photos of so many incredible events I had the privilege to attend this summer and seeing so many faces, who also, are part of many a memory. As I was sitting recently at the Heritage Ball Legacy Luncheon, celebrating fifty years of the Heritage Ball and those who had chaired or been honored as King and Queen of the festivities; I looked around the room and saw not only dear and cherished friends, but so many people who in my memory, made and defined moments in time, integral to my life.

We watch our children experience their first day of school or the first day of 5th grade – whatever the year is, and we all have our memory making playbook. You know the one, that says, special breakfast; chalk written board of “So and So’s first day of____” fill in blanks; then the obligatory

photo going out the door to face their new view of the world for the next year. Kids are scared and parents terrified. Every single time we go through this scripted memory making, without missing a beat. And cherish it for the rest of our lives.

Memories sustain us even when memory is lost. My father, the song maker and writer of 1000’s of words and memories, can no longer remember most things. Perhaps the day will come, sooner than I can be ready, when he will not remember me when I walk in to see him. So, for now, we overlook that he doesn’t remember how to use a phone or a fork some days and hold so very tightly to his laughter when we remind him about something he used to do when we were kids to make us laugh. His smile assures us he does remember and, for a moment, memories are truly all that matter.

One day, this life as magazine publisher, recording the memories of our community, will be passed on to someone else – we can only hope – but in the living of it I will be forever grateful to share in the making of them with all of you! They will define me and make ever more true the idea that – “We never realize the value of something in our life until it becomes a memory.”

BALANCING TRENDS WITH TIMELESS ELEMENTS IN YOUR HOME

Timeless to P

eople who come into our design studio are almost always asking for a timeless design for their home, custom-tailored to their lifestyle and uniquely created for them. Then I ask them to show me pictures of what they consider timeless and unique, and without fail, almost the exact same inspiration photos pop up for just about everyone.

I get it. I tire of the old quickly and want to move on to something new. But when you’re creating a kitchen, a new set of rules apply because you don’t want to change your kitchen like you did with all your wall decor that said things like “eat” and “gather.”

I think all designs should be timeless, unless it’s an extremely short-lived type of project like a party or a conference. Focusing on timelessness helps prevent that “what were they thinking” look we often see when looking at photos from previous decades. On the flip side, people like trends because they feel new and fresh. And new and fresh is a good thing. It would be boring if things never changed (except at the grocery store… no one likes changes to the grocery store layout). The goal with any major project is to marry the idea of timelessness and up-to-date and to create an enjoyable space that will meet the needs of the homeowner for as long as they need.

Timelessness is tricky, though, because the more popular any given style is the less likely it is to be considered timeless. While no one can see the future of design trends with certainty, there are four areas I try to address to ensure a timeless design.

WITH HOLLY THOMPSON DESIGN

1. DOES IT REALLY WORK FOR YOU?

Function is a key part of a space standing the test of time. If the design and decor of your space don’t work well for your lifestyle, it’s going to have a short shelf-life. An example of this would be things like barn doors that just get in the way or overly large showers that just make you cold. It’s a good rule of thumb to make sure that anything expensive you do to your house is actually going to work for you. If you don’t know if it’ll work, find an experienced designer who can explain the pros and cons regarding livability. If you want to try something daring that won’t cause you to have to re-remodel, try leather pants or some cool sunglasses.

2. THOUGHTFUL DESIGN

The skill in which something is pulled together makes all the difference in how timeless it is. Some rooms done in the past can still look surprisingly fresh and current, while others are well past their expiration date. When doing an expensive room like a kitchen or bath, you don’t want anyone to be able to tell exactly what year it was done, or it’ll inevitably be “dated.”

Having thought behind the design concept (figuring out what the room is trying to “do” or “be” with the design) is vital to timelessness because then even when styles change, your space still works. Being knowledgeable about how finishes look over time and avoiding overtly trendy items is important. If you love specific finishes that are currently popular, use them to create an overall look or feel that you love, so that even when the next thing is popular, you still love to be in your space. Also, always make sure your interior design style complements the architecture of your home. Eclectic is fine, but a total shock from exterior to interior isn’t usually a happy surprise.

3. QUALITY MATTERS

This is how builders ruin it for everyone, I’m sorry to say (if you’re a builder and you’re reading this, I’m not talking about you; just the other guys). Once a beautiful finish trickles down to builders, it’s all over for that finish as far as timelessness goes. Generally, builder finishes are a race to the bottom, resulting in things that look pretty at first but don’t age well. This is why people thought they hated brass and wallpaper. It’s because all the brass and wallpaper people saw was cheap and awful. Just pick quality finishes and they will look beautiful for a very long time, which equals “timeless.”

4. IS EVERYONE DOING IT?

The kitchens people are drawn to tend to be trendy because everyone likes them at the same time. This type of trendiness is difficult to avoid because really all kitchens can be divided into time periods based on the popularity of finishes. This is why making sure you have a thoughtful design and quality finishes is so important; these things help your space to outlast the trends.

Avoiding overused color combos helps too because these combos inevitably become associated with a certain decade. Remember mauve and seafoam green from the early ‘90s? What about the earthy tans mixed with red and black in the early 2000s? Black and white is currently on the chopping block. Anytime a color or color combo starts to be seen everywhere, its days are limited and so is its timelessness. Using colors and styles thoughtfully and in line with the style of the house will help your upgrades to stand the test of time.

HOW WILLIAMSON HEALTH IS CREATING GREATER ACCESS TO HEALTHCARE ACROSS WILLIAMSON COUNTY

Williamson Health EMS also continues to grow, serving as the primary 911 EMS provider for all of Williamson County, running eighteen advanced life support ambulances 365 days a year from seventeen stations, including recently added locations in Brentwood and Nolensville.

While creating greater access to healthcare may be the main goal, Williamson Health also wants to create more opportunities for its providers to serve the communities where they live.

“All of our providers participate in community events, from the Williamson County Fair to the Nolensville Farmers’ Market and Experience Spring Hill,” Tim said. “When we open a new location, we want to have providers who live in those communities.

Williamson Health wants to make sure the residents of Williamson County and the surrounding region get the exceptional, high-quality healthcare they deserve. From Brentwood to Spring Hill and Fairview to Nolensville, you’ll see that commitment coming to life in brick-and-mortar walk-in clinics, orthopedic urgent care clinics and rehabilitation services, physician practices and EMS stations spread across the county, meeting patients where they live.

Most Williamson County residents are familiar with Williamson Health’s flagship acute-care hospital, Williamson Medical Center, located in Franklin. But the full-service regional healthcare system also includes Bone and Joint Institute of Tennessee, The Turner-Dugas Breast Health Center, eighteen rapid response EMS units, Williamson Health physician practices, outpatient laboratory and imaging services and multiple joint venture Vanderbilt Health and Williamson Medical Center Walk-In Clinics in Williamson County.

When deciding where to open a new location, the leaders of Williamson

Health take many factors into consideration. “We filter through a lot of information that goes into making a decision about where to add or expand locations,” said Tim Burton, Williamson Health’s associate administrator of operations. Jeffrey Kutsikovich, M.D., an orthopedic surgeon who specializes in the treatment of the hand, wrist, elbow and shoulder at Bone and Joint Institute, said their group is always evaluating the need for new locations across Williamson County. “We consider overall population growth, individual city and location growth and use software to help us find areas that are more under-served when it comes to access to healthcare,” he said. The goal, both Dr. Kutsikovich and Tim say, is creating greater community access to healthcare.

“By offering multiple locations around the county, we can make getting that care more convenient for more patients,” said Dr. Kutsikovich. Tim added, “Williamson Health is focused on expanding the traditional primary care model so that the entire patient is being cared for as well as their sore throat today.”

“I love that patients might see their doctor at the grocery store, or our providers might be at the same ballgame as their patients,” he continued. “Our practices are more than doctors’ offices — they’re active members of their communities.”

Masonic Hall 1979

xperts have called it one of the most significant historic buildings in the South, but the Hiram Lodge No. 7 Masonic Hall now stands weathered and oft-overlooked. It sits on Second Avenue South in downtown Franklin behind a plywood barrier as water damage threatens the integrity of its front wall, the interior of which is covered in Civil War-era graffiti. The structure’s anterior facade, constructed from bricks handmade by enslaved people, leans forward several inches as if in deference to the more modern buildings around it.

Despite all of this, there’s something about the Masonic Hall that beckons to people. The rare combination of Federal and Gothic Revival styles hint that this isn’t just another old building. Indeed, beyond the battlements and pointed arches lies a trove of remarkable stories waiting to be told. Time may have faded the grandeur of the hall, but the passing years have only made its history all the richer.

Built between 1823 and 1826, the Masonic Hall was hailed as an architectural marvel of its day. It was the first three-story building in Tennessee and, at the time of construction, the tallest structure west of the Allegheny Mountains. In 1973, it was named a National Historic Landmark. The only other property in Williamson County to receive such a designation

is the Franklin Battlefield. Today, the hall is the oldest Gothic Revival structure in the state and Franklin’s oldest public building.

The Masonic Hall has played a part in many notable historic events, such as the meeting of the Chickasaw Treaty Council. In August 1830, President Andrew Jackson, Secretary of War John Eaton, and General John Coffee convened in Franklin with Chickasaw leaders to negotiate a treaty that would cede to the U.S. government the last of the Chickasaw lands east of the Mississippi River. This was the only meeting in history between a sitting president and Native American nation to work out a land treaty. After a persuasive speech from President Jackson, the tribe accepted the agreement at the Masonic Hall. Unfortunately, this would ultimately lead to the Chickasaws’ forced removal to Oklahoma along the Trail of Tears.

The Masonic Hall also played a vital role throughout the Civil War years. During the Federal occupation of Franklin, the building multi-tasked as a hospital, quartermaster offices, barracks, and a rallying ground for local Union sympathizers. Confederate spies used the hall’s roof to scout out and sketch Fort Granger, a nearby Union fortification. As mentioned before, the interior walls still bear graffiti left by these soldiers, featuring their names, regiments, and assorted messages.

For many years, the Masonic Hall was the only building in Franklin large enough to host large crowds. As such, the hall has hosted a myriad of events including political assemblies, the domestic competition for a county fair, and even Suffragette meetings. It served as the town’s first library for a time. It has also been the site of church services for every major denomination in Franklin and an armory during World War I.

Ever since the hall’s construction, the Hiram Lodge No. 7 (a “lodge” refers to the members, not the meeting house) has maintained its presence there, making the building the oldest Masonic Hall in continuous use in Tennessee. Thanks to the efforts of the Masons, this 200-year-old structure remains part of Franklin’s historic landscape. However, time has taken its toll, and substantial repairs are now a pressing need. The Masons’ current priority is fixing the front facade, and they are seeking help from the community. The group hopes these renovations will allow them to open the hall to the public, facilitating education about its incredible history.

As a tangible link to Franklin’s past, the Masonic Hall offers a glimpse into bygone eras and fosters a deeper understanding of the community’s heritage. The “I Am Williamson County” column features individuals in Williamson County who are known and unknown, as staples of our community, doing good, being seen and exuding Williamson County! This month we feature Courtney Daniel, a resident of Williamson County for twenty-one years. Courtney has established her roots in Williamson County with her husband, Matt and their family. After fifteen years of working in Pediatrics and Neonatology, Courtney transitioned to Nurse Practitioner. Her journey reflects her drive for the community, while her involvement in community events, such as the Hog Ball, and many other local organizations, underscores her commitment to preserving the county’s heritage and shaping its future.

YW: What is your profession and what led you to choose it?

CD: I am a Nurse Practitioner now. I was very undecided on what I wanted to do when I first started college. I changed my major a few times. The University I attended, had a very reputable nursing program, so after talking with an advisor and discussing my strengths and weaknesses, I decided to go the nursing route. I worked in Pediatrics and Neonatology for fifteen years before becoming a Nurse Practitioner. I decided to pursue that advanced degree because I really liked the idea of autonomy in my practice. Healthcare is typically a puzzle or a mystery, and I wanted to be able to play a larger role in solving the problems.

YW: What are three words that best describe you?

CD: Driven, Loyal and Witty.

YW: Where is your favorite place to go in Williamson County and why?

CD: Harlinsdale Farm is my favorite place in Williamson County. Not only is it beautiful but it has such a rich history. A sunset at Harlinsdale is truly one of the most beautiful things to experience.

YW: What keeps you motivated and inspired?

CD: My deep sense of purpose and the desire to make a positive impact within my family, career and community. I find immense satisfaction in setting meaningful goals and working diligently to achieve them. I am also blessed to be surrounded by some amazing

people, in my husband, family and close friends. They all truly inspire me to be the best person I can be. I know that may sound cheesy, but have you met them? Ultimately, the prospect of contributing to something larger than myself and leaving a legacy that benefits others is what keeps me driven and excited every day.

YW: What organizations are you involved with and why?

CD: I am directly involved with Hog Ball. I also try and volunteer with Friends of Franklin Parks and A Vintage Affair, as I can. These events and organizations are geared towards preserving Franklin and Williamson County and helping the members of this community.

YW: Tell us about the Hog Ball and your involvement:

CD: The main goal of the event is to recreate the nostalgia of Franklin decades ago and host a “party with a purpose,” that’s open to everyone, no matter how long they’ve lived in Franklin. Last year was our first event and it was overwhelmingly successful We easily sold 150 tickets and enjoyed an evening of dancing, mingling and raising money for a local cause. This year we have added 100 additional tickets, capping at 250. This year and last, 100% of the money raised is going to help with the development and completion of Ellie G’s Dream World, an inclusive playground meant for children and adults of all abilities being built in the memory of Elliot Grace Castro. I was there from the inception of the idea and have worked with a committee to plan one of

(what I believe) is the best nights of the year. It has been really cool to work alongside ten of my closest friends to create an event that positively impacts our community.

YW: Finish this statement: I AM Williamson County because…

CD: I value and respect the tradition, southern charm and rich history that this county is rooted in. I am a proud resident who has raised our two boys here-becoming part of an unbroken lineage stretching back eight generations. The legacy of Williamson County is important to me; connecting me to a heritage of hardworking people and resilient families who laid a foundation for a thriving community we cherish today. I hope to be a steward of this heritage, nurturing the values of family, respect and community that have endured for generations. pen now for tours now through December 17th and decorated for the holidays starting in November, the 2023 Southern Living Idea House showcases a harmonious blend of modernity, sustainability and the unmistakable charm of Tennessee. The 2023 Idea House is located in Thompson’s Station and spans 5,600 square feet with three bedrooms, a home gym, a songwriter’s studio, a garden folly and an outdoor entertaining area with a pool and party barn. The home was designed with a mix of styles and materials to bring together a modern take on a classic farmhouse. “We wanted this house to reflect the beauty of its surroundings and the traditions of rural Tennessee architecture, but it’s also very forwardlooking, with countless ideas for thoughtful, sustainable design,” said Sid Evans, Editor in Chief of Southern Living. “Every square inch of this house is inspiring.”

The 2023 Idea House was created and brought to life by a talented team of experts including interior designer Laura Hodges of Laura Hodges Studio, architects Bill Holloway and Luke Sippel of Lake and Land Studio, builders Mary and Patrick Hatcliff of Hatcliff Construction, and landscape designer Butch Hamby of Southern Creations Landscaping. We had the opportunity to learn more from the interior designer Laura Hodges in our interview with her. Laura was approached by Southern Living with the opportunity to design the Idea House for 2023 and was honored to be asked. “Southern Living is an institution known for beautiful design and an elevated lifestyle. I was excited to work with the amazing architecture team at Lake & Land Studio and the fabulous builder, Hatcliff Construction to create this amazing home,” says Laura.

“This was definitely a team effort through and through! The architects at Lake & Land Studio designed a beautiful home which allowed our design team to add the finishing layers with custom cabinetry from our new collection with Unique Kitchens & Baths, fabulous furniture from a range of American-made makers like Lee Industries, vintage pieces from Chairish, original artwork from the Nashville Artist Collective and a gorgeous hand-painted mural by Lenehan Studios. We partnered with over forty furniture makers, artists, upholsterers, and design businesses

One of my favorite rooms is the breakfast room where we designed a tone-on-tone mural with Lenehan Studios and she drove ten hours from Maryland to Tennessee to hand paint the entire room. We also have a lot of DIY and accessible ideas in our children’s bedroom and, of course, I would be remiss if I didn’t mention my love for the dramatic feel of the songwriter’s studio.

to bring this home to life. We were also able to finish the home with decorative accessories from our own home decor shop, Domain by Laura Hodges Studio,” says Laura.

Laura says the biggest challenges came from the timing, budget and two-hour airplane ride to get to the house. “Luckily, we were able to partner with the amazing craftspeople from Hatcliff Construction and local artisans and fabricators to work on a quick turnaround. City Shade was our drapery fabricator and they came into the project with only weeks remaining and they managed to install the beautiful curtains and shades in record time. Lastly, the travel time was well spent planning and coordinating the project!”

During our discussion, we asked Kathie about her advice for buyers and agents in the coming months and her perspective on the direction of

In regard to the future of the market, here is what Kathie shared:

KM: I wish I had a crystal ball! The FED is focused on getting inflation under control (closer to two percent annual core inflation). Unfortunately, this has led to the highest interest rates on consumer borrowing in twenty years. This includes higher interest rates on home purchases. Yet, life circumstances require some people to buy or sell their home, even in this environment. REALTORS® as seller’s agents can help position their client’s home in the market through home staging, pre-listing home inspections, professional photography to show a home at its best, open house strategies to make the home available for viewing to agents and buyers, aggressive pricing, and making the home as accessible to showing agents and their clients as possible.

NAVIGATING WILLIAMSON COUNTY’S HOUSING MARKET WITH WILLIAMSON COUNTY ASSOCIATION OF REALTORS PRESIDENT KATHIE MOORE

Working with buyers, the agent will be referring their clients to lender partners who can structure the best loan for their circumstances, educate their buyers about the current rates and get the buyer to the closing table with the least amount of hassle possible. REALTORS® can guide the buyer as they make an offer on a home by having a deep understanding of the contracts used to purchase a home, understanding the target home’s micro market (what’s sold recently, what’s staying on the market a little longer and why), helping the buyer structure an offer that will be attractive to this particular seller through conversations with the seller’s agent and making sure all the communications between both agents are consistent, timely and complete.

WCAR: FOR BUYERS IN SEARCH OF A REALTOR®, WHAT WOULD YOU ADVISE THEM TO LOOK FOR? WHAT MAKES AN EXCEPTIONAL REALTOR®?

KM: An exceptional REALTOR® has great communication skills, an engaging personality, listens carefully to their clients to understand their needs, asks great questions, is honest and has great integrity, is innovative in their approach to marketing, has a great network of connections (painters, repair persons, architects, appraisers, home inspectors, electricians, HVAC contractors, etc) and is completely loyal to their clients.

WCAR: WHAT DOES A REALTOR® DO?

KM: A REALTOR® facilitates transactions between buyers and sellers. REALTORS® are licensed by the State. All states have different laws regarding how real estate transactions are legally accomplished in the state. REALTORS® also become certified or educated to become more specialized in their field. This may include learning more about working specifically with buyers, with sellers or specializing in the luxury market, in condominiums, farms and land.

WCAR: WHAT BENEFITS DO REALTORS® OFFER TO SELLERS?

KM: REALTORS® offer sellers great advice about how to position their home in the market. Positioning includes assisting with pricing through any number of tools, most often a CMA or comparative market analysis. Understanding how the seller’s home compares to similar homes on the market is important. Comparing homes involves research for similar homes in a geographic area, school district and, finally, a neighborhood to arrive at a price range acceptable to the seller and attractive to a buyer. The REALTOR® will also have an understanding of how an appraiser, working for a lender, would view a home and assign value. The REALTOR® will know how to negotiate with a buyer’s agent on behalf of the seller to get the best price for the home. Additionally, the REALTOR® will be skillful in getting a transaction successfully to the closing table through inspections, appraisals and the buyer’s financing.

KM: Since a REALTOR® is an independent contractor, we have to utilize our time wisely, budget our time and money carefully, as well as have a routine for workdays. There is no longer a “boss” guiding our days and planning our work – it’s all up to us!

The perks are – there is no boss, the day is all yours to use however you wish! The challenges are – there is no boss!

Without a written plan for our day, month, and year, we can fail to plan financially for the good months and the not-so-good months. We each have to learn to be good stewards of our time and money. There are lots of systems we can put in place in our businesses – many involve our time, money and effort to make us successful.

Goal setting is important – these can be personal goals – like learning new skills or business goals – like knowing how much money you need to earn to keep your household afloat.

The 411 of the Thank You Note

While this topic may seem overly discussed, it was recently brought to the forefront of my etiquette mind, and I was in need of some insight and thought you would enjoy a refresher too. Of course, I immediately went to the source of all things etiquette for my thank you note dilemma - Emily Post. You see, dear Emily, as a harried business owner and mother, the last almost five years since said child was born, evidently have rendered me somewhat deficient in what previously had been very important and sacred to me - the remembrance of gifts and kindnesses and most of all, the hand written thank you note. Of course, I say that, but the quandary I found myself in recently was not that I had not written the thank you notes… I had written, addressed and even stamped them, but not mailed…almost five years ago now, on the occasion of the baby shower…

The dilemma: Discard these notes, five years overdue? Or send them, addressing the delay and expressing remorse? This extends to unmailed wedding and baby gifts too.

Now, as a Franklin local- I absolutely love this community and think it is such a rich place to move to after retirement, while raising a family, or just as a wonderful location to slow down and enjoy the little moments in life. There is truly something here for everyone, no matter your age!

TOM MONEY’S ARTISTRY IN LANDSCAPE ARCHITECTURE

hen HISTORY’s American Picker Mike Wolfe went looking for a landscape architect to design his new outdoor gathering space at Columbia Motor Alley, he did not have to look very far. He just walked across the road in Leiper’s Fork, to his neighbor Tom Money, and hired Tom pretty much on the spot. No wonder, since Wolfe had watched Tom and wife Wendy’s yard be transformed from unremarkable to gasp-worthy. That, and the fact that Tom’s reputation as a successful landscape architect from Atlanta had followed him to Tennessee.

Tom Money had a knack for impeccable landscape design from an early age. While still in high school, he launched his own lawn care business. Then, and still, Tom is known for his conscientious attention to an “edged to perfection” detail.

In the dirt and work, the sweat and early success, Tom felt energized and rewarded. So much so, he decided to stay with it, and earned a degree in Landscape Architecture from the University of Georgia.

“I’ve been immersed in this industry for decades, and love what I do,” Money said. “I bring insight and experience to the table, often problem-solving landscape issues, and always creating beautiful outdoor environments for my clients.”

To view Tom’s work is to understand his high level of technical knowledge and his experience in plant and structural design. We had nothing but the best at Sinatra Bar & Lounge recently, when we enjoyed our Pours & Palates tasting experience with them. Opening its doors this past spring and a part of Icon Entertainment & Hospitality, this fine dining restaurant is in the Southern Turf building in downtown Nashville and gives a nod to “Ol’ Blue Eyes” himself. Showcasing a 1950s atmosphere, with moody lighting, swanky décor, photographs and artwork tributes to Sinatra throughout the establishment, as well as live music featuring the best of Frank Sinatra and the Rat Pack… Sinatra Bar & Lounge takes you back in time from the moment you step in the door.

We were welcomed for our tasting and found ourselves immersed in a beautifully curated menu, with favorites from Executive Chef, Lorenzo Reyes, and Corporate Executive Chef of Icon Entertainment & Hospitality, Bryan Lareau. Along with the tasting, I also had the opportunity to learn more about Bryan and his journey in the culinary world.

Bryan has worked in many different types of food service, from fine dining steakhouses, resorts and hotels, sports and entertainment venues, country clubs and has even owned his own catering business. “I love the classic French technique... Marco Pierre White, Anthony Bourdain, Gordon Ramsay, Charlie Trotter and nouveau chefs like Grant Achatz and Ryder Zetts,” Bryan says. His approach to creating new dishes is ongoing and he says it’s an art. “We are always learning and challenging ourselves,” he explains. “Constantly trying and tasting everything with an open mind...seeing where the flavors take us!”

Bryan became involved with Sinatra Bar & Lounge in January of 2023, when he began working for Icon Entertainment & Hospitality. “Lorenzo Reyes (Executive Chef) and I worked on plating together, but all the offerings are of his design,” says Bryan. “I think they’re all fantastic but, of course, I’m a bit biased. I would have to say the braised short rib with pappardelle pasta is my favorite. That smooth whipped creamy ricotta, the wide pasta and shredded braised beef in a rich braising liquid reduction... I am salivating just thinking about it.”

We’ll visit a palace, and dine with the king, We’re gonna start living, you wait and see, Nothing but the best is good enough for me.

The diverse menu features some of Sinatra’s favorite Italian recipes. Treated to so many swoon-worthy dishes, it was hard to pick my own favorite, but I will give you some of the highlights from the experience, starting with the cocktails. The Come Fly With Me is crafted with Lunazul Blanco Tequila, Torres Magdala Orange, Lavender Syrup, Bitter Truth Creme de Violette and lime, and had a uniquely floral and fruit-essence flavor while also showing off its light jade color. The Sultan of Swoon with Grey Goose Le Citron, Grand Marnier, lime and Fee Brothers Cranberry Bitters was an invigorating and refreshing drink, with a sweet citrus flavor.

With the appetizers, my highlights were the Calamari, Meatballs and Caprese Salad. The Calamari fritti was served with spicy aioli and was the perfect crispness with spice and texture. The Meatballs are served with marinara sauce, salsa verde and shaved piave. The marinara was a smooth, yet rich flavor, as if it had been simmering on the stove all day. The Caprese Salad was served as a tomato tartare with burrata, heirloom cherry tomatoes, mozzarella and green herb oil. It was a taste of Italy with the appetizer dishes alone!

Turning to entrées, I will start with the one I am still craving: The Ragu Pappardelle, served with braised short rib, whipped ricotta, Grana Padano and basil. Chef's kiss! It was a dish of rich flavors and hit all the high notes if one is craving pasta and flavorful meat. Another entrée we tried was the Iberico Secreto, which is a serving of Iberian pork, salsa verde, arugula and Meyer lemon. If one wants to veer away from the classic steak but still wants red meat, this is your dish. The Walnut Crusted Halibut with Marsala sauce, seasonal vegetables and green emulsion was another that made the top of my tingling-tastebuds list. Presented as nothing short of a work of art, the flavors were equally as masterful.

One of the many sides we enjoyed was the Roasted Gourmet Mushrooms with parsley butter, Grana Padano and breadcrumbs. These are a beautiful compliment to any of the entrées. Another we dove into was the Zucchini Fries with cornmeal, fines herbs, Aleppo pepper and zucchini aioli. This is a meal on its own! I loved the flavor kick it had from the pepper.

We finished off our evening with the Tiramisu, served with a coffee macaron, fresh raspberry, cocoa powder and micro mint. It was marvelous and brought the classy to a classic. One could compliment this dessert with an espresso and be ready to dance the night away to the tunes of Frank Sinatra.

He then passed on his knowledge to his son, Robert, who passed it down to his son, Patrice, who then passed it down to his son, Julien. Today, Julien Tixier crafts a magical wonder at his precious jewel of a micro-house in the Montagne de Reims.

Produced with environmentally sustainable farming, climate stewardship and protective of the environment, they use zero manmade, chemical herbicides or insecticides, and vineyard treatments include only natural insect repellents, such as garlic oil. Sustainable Viticulture Certification of Champagne is an official recognition of Champagne winemakers’ environmental performance, which Avid Vines has and Andre Tixier & Fils is among the fifteen percent of the Champagne AOC that has Sustainable Viticulture in Champagne certification. They use three varieties of grapes in the composition of their

champagne: Pinot Noir, Pinot Meunier and Chardonnay.

David Aferiat is Founder and CEO of Avid Vines, a luxury wine importer based in Atlanta, and he founded it after a family visit to the Champagne region of France. He always had a dream to be an importer in his retirement and the plan was accelerated when he met Julien Tixier. Julien is the fourth generation, Owner-Grower of a certified sustainable, organic, Premier Cru Brut Champagne house called: Andre Tixier & Fils. ARH: What makes your champagne stand out from others in the region, in terms of flavor and character?

DA: The region of Champagne is called the Montagne de Reims, known for its chalky soil which provides excellent drainage and a bountiful source of nutrients for the vines.

The tiny hamlet where the vineyards are located is called Chigny les Roses which is in a Premier Cru designated area. Paces away from Andre Tixier is the Domaine of Champagne Cattier. You might recognize the mark as the Ace of Spades which is the champagne Jay-Z is associated with here in the US. What matters most, however, is not the impression on others when buying a bottle at an outrageous price, but rather the coherence and harmony that exists between the winemaker and Mother Nature to produce Champagne unique to where it is grown and made.

ARH: How do you decide on the blend of grape varietals for your Champagnes, and how does each varietal contribute to the final product?

DA: Every Champagne winemaker competes in standard categories to be taken seriously or understand where their results rank when compared: Their Brut Rose, their Pinot Meunier led offering, their vintages and perhaps most importantly, their Blanc de Blanc. When making a blended varietal Champagne, winemakers look to Pinot Meunier for its berry flavors, Pinot

Noir for its body-mouth-feel and structure, and finally Chardonnay for its brightness and acidity.

ARH: What challenges do you face in maintaining consistency and quality across different vintages of your champagne?

DA: Maintaining consistency is a desirable outcome given how many curve balls Mother Nature can throw. Andre Tixier & Fils leverage a quantity of aged reserves from previous harvests that act to reduce the annual volatility. Some of the current production feature reserves that go back as far as 2016 and represent almost fifty percent of each bottle. A challenging situation occurred in 2021 for the Champagne region where the harvest was declared unusable. In other words, no Champagne is permitted to be made. This puts a strain on the previous harvest in 2020 - a stellar harvest that instead of being solely dedicated to a vintage year, must now be stretched to act as a reserve bridge over the missing year.

ARH: Can you talk about any sustainability practices you implement in your vineyard or production process?

DA: Andre Tixier & Fils gives more than lip service to what is an increasing trend toward sustainable farming. Many winemakers in the region choose not to pay for implementing the additional wine making protocols and the necessary audits to obtain agency certifications to add to their labels. Andre Tixier & Fils, however, anchors its brand on these certifications and invests in a ninety-point audit covering air, land and water.

ARH: Where is your Champagne currently available and where can we expect it to be available in the future?

DA: The wines of Andre Tixier & Fils are allocated due to their small production. Avid Vines brings over specific quantities you can find on avidvines.com. WHITNEY’S COOKIES IN DOWNTOWN FRANKLIN

ith plans to open September 30 th , a new and sweet, business enters our historic downtown Franklin shopping and dining district. Whitney’s Cookies will open its shop on 4th Avenue in downtown Franklin and boy are you in for a treat!

Whitney’s Cookies was launched by founder and head chef, Whitney Miller, and not only born out of her passion for baking, but also her passion for people and creating food memories.

Whitney is no stranger to the world of food. She began her culinary career in 2010 when she auditioned for the first ever season of MasterChef on Fox. Not only did she make it onto the show, (spoiler alert); she WON the entire season. It was on this journey that her notoriety for her sweets began. Quickly she was deemed the “Pastry Princess” for her proficiency with desserts. Now fast forward ten years, after Whitney has been featured on countless stages and shows literally across the world, (even as a former contributor and writer for this very feature column in YOUR Williamson)! The one thing that has remained her most requested menu item is her cookies. Their popularity sparked the idea for Whitney to create her own cookie company so that everyone could enjoy her cookies and with that she launched Whitney’s Cookies.

During her time traveling the world, cooking in some of the most exclusive kitchens, Whitney realized how powerful food is. Food is more than the sustenance of life; it is the cornerstone upon which people of every culture gather over to celebrate all of life’s events. Because of this she has made it her mission to create “Food Memories” that are sparked from enjoying special foods like her cookies. She puts a lot of love into every cookie she creates. Countless hours are spent on every single cookie recipe, as you will soon experience. “I wear many hats everyday including wife, mom, business owner, recipe developer, food stylist and the list goes on. HAHA! I will say that it is not easy, and I have definitely not perfected any of it. I ask the Lord for patience, energy and guidance on a regular basis,” she says.

It is a family operation with Whitney’s husband helping to create the storefront and supporting her dreams daily. They have three children seven, four and ten weeks old! “My kids give me purpose and a reason to work harder and harder each day. I love bringing them along with me on my culinary journey. They have learned about hard work and doing what you love,” Whitney explains. “If you ask my oldest son, Miller, what he wants to be when he grows up? He will tell you he wants to open a restaurant. He loves to cook like his mom. My kids have been raised in my cookie kitchen. I can say

Whitney’s mission statement for her business says it all: To use our God-given talents to create cookies that are made with real ingredients, crafted with love, attention and detail, and responsibly made in an environment focused on serving others. Our aim is to bring people together to celebrate all of life’s events and create “Food Memories” that stay with you long after the cookie is gone. We believe in promoting unhurried conversation, using good manners and making guests feel like family.

The idea of Whitney’s cookie company began with her brownie cookie recipe included n her second cookbook, New Southern Table. “A family friend told me that I should start a cookie company because my brownie cookie was the best cookie he had ever had,” Whitney recalls. “Why cookies? I prayed over it and the Lord placed it on my heart to pursue it. It was a fun and challenging time creating all my first cookie flavors. I was excited that I could finally share something I created with all the people who shared with me after MasterChef, that they would love to try my cooking,” she remembers. In January 2020, Whitney began shipping cookies

nationwide and since then her business has taken off. Her cookies have become a beloved treat for celebrities such as Sadie Robertson, Jessica Simpson, and Laura Dern. “Reese Witherspoon posted about our cookies on her Instagram this year. “That was a wow, pinch me moment,” Whitney exclaims.

Brown Butter Cookie

Whitney, her family and her business partner, Spencer Bales and family, can’t wait to see people walking the streets of downtown Franklin with cookies in hand. In the meantime, try your hand at cookie making with one of Whitney’s favorite recipes.

Ingredients:

1 stick (8 tablespoons, 113 g) unsalted butter

Method:

Cut the butter into cubes. In a medium skillet, melt the cubed butter over medium heat, stirring occasionally. Once melted increase the heat to medium-high, constantly stirring. The butter will foam, and the milk solids will begin to brown. Cook until the bits of milk solids turn brown, and the liquid is golden brown. Immediately transfer the brown butter to a liquid measuring cup. Be sure to scrape all of the brown bits out of the pan. Allow the butter to cool at room temperature. Determine the measurement for the browned butter in the measuring cup. Add enough water to the browned butter to equal 1/2 cup. Stir.

If using a scale, place a small glass bowl on the scale and set the scale to zero. Pour the brown butter into the bowl. Record the measurement. Allow the butter to cool. Once cooled, add enough water to the brown butter to equal 113g. Stir.

Cover the brown butter and refrigerate until solid. Use the solid brown butter like you would in any cookie recipe that uses butter.

Each school has its own unique way of elevating the game-day experience, making SEC football a cultural phenomenon, in its own right. From soaring eagles to hauntingly loud stadiums, here is a glimpse into the heart-pounding traditions of each SEC school.

WHERE EAGLES SOAR

In Auburn, the war cry “War Eagle” comes to life as an actual eagle soars over the stadium, before landing at midfield. Post-victory, fans congregate at Toomer’s Corner to celebrate by rolling toilet paper over trees.

THE ROAR OF DEATH VALLEY

LSU’s Tiger Stadium (famously known as Death Valley) boasts a fearsome reputation, named for its “graveyard” atmosphere for rivals. Nearby, Mike the Tiger, the live mascot, adds to this aura of intimidation.

arlier this month, Randy Huth and his coaching staff loaded a bus with twelve talented baseball players, on their way to the Little League World Series in Williamsport, Pennsylvania. The Nolo Boys and Stella, as they have been called by the town, are making history. Their victory over Florida in the Southeast Regional Championship Game gave them their fifth Regional Championship within the last ten years, marking the first time in Little League history that a team has made it to this competition five times. As if that accomplishment is not enough, Randy Huth has now become the first manager in Little League World Series history to bring a team to the contest three times in a row. Players Nash Carter and Grayson May will become the fortyfirst and forty-second players in the seventy-sixyear history of the Little League World Series to make back-to-back appearances. Also making history is Stella Weaver. She is the first female player in Nolensville to represent the town at this competition and the twenty-second female to play in Little League World Series history.

“To be able to do this three times with three groups of kids is special. I don’t take it for granted,” said Manager Randy Huth. Each year the Nolensville team has come up with a saying or slogan that represents who they are and what their goal is. ‘Our Time’ is the slogan for the 2023 team because even though Nolensville has had a team represented in the Little League

World Series the past two years, this is a new team, with a new goal and a different vibe. “We didn’t come this far to only come this far,” Randy said.

Nolensville’s coaching staff consists of Manager Randy Huth, Coach Mark Carter, Nash Carter’s dad and the keeper of the famous “power pellets” and Coach Chris Mercado, the previous Manager of the 2013 and 2014 Regional Championship team.

This experience is every twelve-year-old baseball player’s dream. “The kids are most excited about signing autographs and answering interview questions,” said Randy.

Nolensville Little League is working with local businesses and the town to show as much support for this team as possible. Nolensville Communications Officer, Brandi Najm said, “We believe that this team not only represented Nolensville well, but that they made history throughout the tournament.”

Ultimately, the team fell short five to three against the West Region Champions, El Segundo Little League. In a post written on Facebook, Randy stated, “It doesn’t bother me that we are leaving Williamsport early, and that there is no championship trophy to raise… All I know is that the last three years have been the best times of my life.”

Brentwood Academy offers a unique educational enrichment opportunity for students in grades nine through twelve known as Winterim. This opportunity allows students a break from the classroom to engage in hands-on learning with faculty both locally and across the globe. Specialized, nontraditional travel courses allow students to take part in community projects, experience cultural immersion and provide opportunities to learn in unique settings.

“Students are learning, but at the same time, relationships are being built while outside the traditional classroom. As a foreign language teacher, it’s one thing to talk about flamenco dancing in the classroom and watch videos, but it is another thing to take them to Spain and let them take lessons and experience it for themselves. Hopefully, those memories will last a lifetime,” shares Shannon Frost, Winterim CoDirector and Foreign Language Faculty Member.

Students are challenged to expand their knowledge beyond present experiences while being encouraging a love of learning. Winterim provides opportunities to fulfill the school’s mission of nurturing and challenging each whole person — body, mind and spirit — to the glory of God through exploration in academics, arts, outdoors and athletics.

Offerings for travel this upcoming year include exploring Florida’s ecosystem, historical excursions in Spain, and Mayan and Belizean culture immersion, among other opportunities.

Students who choose to stay local select from courses such as pottery and stained-glass creation, cooking classes, film studies or selfdefense.

According to Frost, “One of the things we love to hear from our alumni years later is how Winterim impacted choices they have made, and passions developed in their lives. It feels good to know we helped to plant that seed. They tell us that their Winterim experience is one of their best memories from their time at Brentwood Academy.”

KG: I get to do what I dreamed about as a kid - to have a career in music; to play it and I even get to write it. I get to help produce festivals and work with other artists in the music industry and it really is a blessing.

JB: How did your journey begin with the music industry?

KG: You know, I was just that kid always playing music and I started in elementary school with a little band, playing talent shows and parties. Then, it turned into playing more parties through high school and ultimately being part of a college band. We were playing all these SEC schools and after I graduated LSU, Better Than Ezra was performing together when I decided I might go to law school! But instead, I decided to give this post college phase three years to see if the music would take off. Those three years came and went, and we still weren’t signed and I kind of realized – ok I better be in it for the long haul. And it paid off. The band got together in 1988 but it wasn’t until 1995 when a major label picked us up and suddenly this regional band that was a big deal in the southeast, became a national and worldwide success.

JB: Man! You have worked with some amazing folks, including Taylor Swift and Sugarland. But then the name Meatloaf popped up and I was blown away!

KG: He was the first person I ever co-wrote with. It was in 2002 and we were in the same studio, when he heard one of my songs coming through the walls that he liked. He asked me to write a song with him and of course, it was just the coolest thing ever that this legendary entertainer wanted to write with me! It really set me on my path to writing songs for other people.

JB: What’s the biggest obstacle that you’ve overcome in your years as being an artist?

Ihave said before that we are all blessed to be in such an amazing community, and I feel it’s the people that make Williamson County what it is. The broad range of these wonderful people also make it unique and special.

Our SOUTHERN GENTLEMAN for September is Mr. Kevin Griffin, best known as band member of Better Than Ezra, and as a co-founder of upcoming local Pilgrimage Music & Cultural Festival. I recently had the chance to get to know Kevin better and talk about his own pilgrimage.

JB: Kevin, you have had quite an impressive and wonderful life to this point...

KG: I think the biggest obstacle is settling. You know, getting stuck in a routine. In any career you just get stuck in a rut when you do things the same way. Even when it’s worked for you most of the time, most people find out that sometimes what has always worked for them doesn’t work quite as well as it used to. Hitting that point is what the book is about, the desire to discover new things and to continue mixing it up and be able to be re-inspired, be able to stay nimble – which in my case, has led to being able to be competitive and successful.

JB: How long have you lived in Williamson County and what do you love about it?

KG: I moved to downtown Franklin in December of 2010. I’m from the South. I was born in Atlanta. I grew up in Louisiana. After Katrina, in 2005, I lived for several years in Los Angeles. I lived in LA after graduating LSU in the 90s and I was doing a lot of song writing then and just missing the South. I could

already see in 2010, that the Nashville and Williamson County areas especially, were going to have a moment. It was just all these things aligning in my life, and so, I saw this beautiful home in Franklin, and I was like: This is a no brainer! We have got to jump on it! I love being able to walk downtown alongside these historic buildings and cool shops, all with such a hometown feel but still a cosmopolitan feel as well. It’s the best of both worlds.

JB: What do you feel are your biggest achievements both in work and personally?

KG: I think my biggest achievement is my kids. I love my kids, that’s an easy one. Professionally, I think that maybe for me the thing that I’m most proud about is that I’ve been able to keep a career going in this business and it’s all based on not quitting because nothing came easy to me or my bands. Nothing fell into our laps, and we were told no so many times. But what I have learned is that if you don’t quit you might get a chance to be successful. But if you quit you definitely don’t have a chance.

JB: Your book The Greatest Song, looks so intriguing. Tell me more about it.

KG: The book came out of my giving speeches to different corporate groups about creativity and what I do to stay creative. That work took off for me when I gave speeches to Nike, Google and Salesforce groups and I decided to turn those presentations into a book. I wrote this book and I got to tell the story about a CMA successful Nashville songwriter who, at a crossroads professionally and personally, reveals what happens to him. It is fanciful and is phrase crazy but it’s fun and so I think it’s a good read. People seem to be getting a lot out of it!

JB: What are you most proud of with the growth of the Pilgrimage Music & Cultural Festival?

KG: What I am most proud of is that it’s become part of people’s lives. I think that just like what I’ve learned with writing a song; it starts off with your own idea, then if you’re lucky, it becomes bigger than that. Like when a song that I’ve written suddenly becomes part of someone’s life. It’s memories; it’s a soundtrack; it’s a wedding; it’s a road trip. Pilgrimage is the same thing. I wanted it to become a part of the memories of friends having a fun time. Everybody goes to your house in Franklin when it’s

Pilgrimage time and eventually, you don’t even know who started it - it’s just this fun thing that brings people together and it becomes a tradition you never want to miss.

JB: And lastly, the big question: What do you feel it is to be a gentleman and how do you maintain those qualities and traits daily?

KG: First off, you have got to be lucky enough to have been taught manners and how to BE a gentleman. You know, it’s not something you’re just born with – this sense of how to be a gentleman. I was lucky enough to have parents that taught me not only manners and what it is to behave like a gentleman, but also how to have grace and strength, and the ability to say: I don’t know and I’m wrong - and to try to get better. That, for me, is what being a gentleman truly means. I love being a southerner. I like saying yes ma’am and yes sir and opening doors. I’ve lived all over the world. I’ve never met somebody that was offended if I opened the door for them.

Kevin, we can all relate to and learn from your “don’t quit” philosophy and thank you for bringing the Pilgrimage to us for us to all build our own memories. HAILEY WHITTERS IS RETURNING TO PILGRIMAGE

rom a small town in Iowa, Hailey came to Nashville to fulfill her childhood dreams in the music industry. She has collaborated with an array of talent, including Little Big Town, Trisha Yearwood, Brandi Carlile, Alicia Keys and many more. Her career took off in 2020 with her self-funded debut album The Dream and she has received CMT Music Award and Grammy nominations. Her song “Everything She Ain’t,” went viral on TikTok over the past year and has brought even more recognition to the rising star.

Hailey will be taking the main stage at Pilgrimage Music & Cultural Festival, on September 23rd at the Park at Harlinsdale Farm. We recently had a chance to sit down with her to learn a little bit more about her career and what lies ahead.

ARH: When and how did your music career begin?

HW: I was writing songs as a young girl and came to Nashville on vacation with my family when I was fifteen. We went to the Opry, and I immediately decided that I would chase my dreams and play on that stage one day. When I graduated from high school, I packed my bags and moved to Nashville to get my songwriting career started.

ARH: What artists influenced your style?

HW: Dolly Parton and Keith Whitley are some of my biggest influences. I also love the 90s country artists I grew up listening to – Alan Jackson, Patti Loveless, Trisha Yearwood, Deana Carter. Their songs were all so good.

ARH: Do you write all your own music?

HW: I write many of my songs but not all of them. There are so many incredible songs that are waiting to be heard. Whenever I’m putting an album together, it’s always “best song wins” whether I wrote it or not.

ARH: What has been the most challenging part of your career?

HW: Right before I cut my record The Dream, I was a waitress at a mom-and-pop Cajun restaurant; feeling deflated and wondering if music would ever work out for me. I decided to give it one more go before I decided to pack it

up and head back to Iowa. I cut The Dream and released it independently. When other artists started to post about my song “Ten Year Town”. everything changed.

ARH: What goals do you have for the future?

HW: I’m hoping to buy a farm (with lots of piglets), in Iowa one day. That keeps me goinghaha!

ARH: Did you anticipate that “Everything She Ain’t” would go viral? What inspired this song?

HW: I had no idea that a TikTok trend would get started with the song, but I have to thank the blue-collar boys of TikTok for making it happen! When I sat down with Bryan Simpson and Ryan Tyndell to write that day, we started with a dark ballad and kept getting stuck. I suggested we lighten the mood and try a different direction, and we started writing “Everything She Ain’t”. It came together so quickly; we were just on a roll.

ARH: How did you become involved with the Pilgrimage Music & Cultural Festival? What can fans expect from your performance?

HW: I cannot wait to perform at Pilgrimage! I have played it once before in 2021 and had a blast. This year I believe I’m playing the main stage, which I’m so excited for! My shows are full of fiddle and straight-up country music so I hope everyone likes it.

ARH: What do you love about Williamson County (home to the Pilgrimage)?

HW: I love the Franklin Farmers Market, and to hike around the Harpeth. It’s such a beautiful area of Tennessee!

ARH: If you could give advice to aspiring musicians what would it be?

HW: I always tell young artists that they should stay true to who they are and what makes them unique. It can be tempting to chase what’s popular in the music industry, but it’s best when you tap into your true self and share your art with the world.
