To Much Is Given, Much Is Required

I have had the above quote on my mind a lot of late. I guess in truth – it is the mantra I try hard to live by in my life. And it is the mindset by which we run our company. Of course, the element of profit is always in mind but I am pretty sure that most small business owners have to have the passion of something greater in mind when they go into business for themselves, which has very little to do with making money.

I have volunteered in some form or fashion in this community since childhood. I am certain, at the age of twelve when I showed up at Carnton and asked if I could do anything at all to help out there just so I could be there, was not inspired by a desire to give. But in doing those things in formative years, that did, in fact, help a cause – whatever that may have been – it began to place in me, this calling to do something with my life that was worthwhile. It didn’t have to be in my profession, it could just be in my daily life. How lucky am I that, somewhere along the way, I managed to discover that I could make a living doing something that I could translate into a way to give back?

To much is given, much is expected, may initially have come from Jesus, but I learned it from my grandfather I suspect – because it was a belief he lived his life by and I saw it and experienced it whenever I was around him. Whether it was literally giving the shoes off his feet to the man he saw homeless or tithing in church every Sunday of his adult life, he believed it was his duty on this earth to give back whenever possible. He had a strong work ethic and belief that people needed to work and do for themselves and yet somehow, he managed to have the two mindsets, not conflict, because as he saw it, those who needed help were God’s way of showing him how blessed he was and how he had to pay

it forward – not to see fault or weakness in the less fortunate.

If only I could be as a good a person as my grandfather. Isn’t possible but we do what we can with what gifts we have been given. Using the magazine as a way to donate and provide thousands of dollars’ worth of marketing and promotional benefits to countless charities and nonprofit events here in Williamson County every year, is something that we as a staff, believe is part of our mission. If the community magazine isn’t 100% about community - in all ways - then we better start calling ourselves just a lifestyle publication, I guess. My staff gets involved, does some heavy lifting, goes above and beyond with their time and their own special gifts and talents often. For me, as a business owner, to find those people who share my philosophy about why we are doing this, is the greatest gift, in this job, of all.

Johnny and I recently had the privilege of running for King and Queen of the Mardi Gras Court for the Mardi Gras Ball benefiting My Friend’s House. If you don’t know about My Friend’s House, go to their website at myfriendshousetn.org and learn more. In short, they provide housing and services for displaced young men in our community. Johnny immediately saw this need as one worth putting his all into. The need for role models and mentors for these young men, who by no fault of their own, find themselves in a difficult life, must be given an alternative to simply fading into the system or resorting to desperate methods of survival. Even through small ways, the impact of even the smallest of donations or time or money, directly and profoundly, can change the life of someone at MFH. And for us, that is what THIS is all about: What we have been given in life and how we can pay it forward. We ended up

raising a little over $35,000, and even though we weren’t crowned king and queen in the end – we knew it didn’t matter because we had done our small part to change a life. There is no better “crown” than that feeling of good.

This year, YOUR Williamson and Robertson Media Group will embark on a new facet of our business – poised to impact others and give back to our community. We will be producing multiple events throughout the year with a strategic “give back” to some charity or organization in need around us. We will invite the community to join us by supporting these events and ensuring that we all use our gifts and blessings in ways big and small, to create change and impact a life.

Thank you, Williamson County, for humbling me with your generosity of spirit and good everywhere I look. We are the example of to much is given… Now let’s keep doing what is required – NO - what is our blessing to get to do... GIVE BACK.

Sip, Share & Cherish THE ART OF THE TEA PARTY

In this fast-paced, technology-engrossed society that often feels fragmented, the timeless art of having tea, serves as a beacon of true connection, serving as a reminder of reflective joy and fulfillment found in sharing moments of togetherness. As Nashville natives and owners of Tea Rose, we are intentional about the blending of quality time, luxurious tea experiences and southern hospitality.

Tea Rose was founded from our intimate mother-daughter tea parties and truly blossomed after I hosted Jaila’s princessthemed 7th birthday tea party. I’ve always planned every detail of her celebrations, but it was something truly magical about the tea party. The girls were stunning as each dressed as a different princess and enjoyed every element as did their moms with a special queen’s court setup. We still reminisce about that unforgettable experience. Now, our goal is to bring the magic of tea to clients and create moments that will be treasured for a lifetime.

At the heart of our business is family and communication because we know the strength that comes from intergenerational exchange and heartfelt dialogue over a soul-warming cup of tea. Our unplugged tea experiences allow us to engage in meaningful

conversations and practice teatime etiquette while creating new memories. The regality of a tea party is to be fully present, and we get to disconnect from the daily chaos and find solace in each other’s presence.

Outside of our personal time, we love creating transformative tea experiences from princess parties to Bridgerton bridal bliss. The glowing initial impression of the tablescapes and intricate details ignites us to keep growing our collections and perfecting our craft. With each experience we get the pleasure of watching the instant transformation to poised ladies and gentlemen after they understand their plate seating, learn how to stir tea properly, and signal they have concluded their courses while conversing with their table mates.

It has been amazing watching our favorite pastime grow into a business that connects families and friends across Middle Tennessee. Tea Rose is eager to begin your transformational tea experience and cultivate your visionary tea party for all occasions. In the meantime, we hope you embrace those quaint moments to deepen your relationships and curate a special opportunity of connection.

Tea Time Tips

Courtsey of Tea & Etiquette: Taking Tea for Business and Pleasure

The traditional time for afternoon tea is four o’clock. Along with a choice of teas, there are three distinct courses: savory (tiny sandwiches) first to blunt the appetite, then scones, and finally, pastries.

Invitations may be extended and accepted by telephone, face-to-face, or by mailing them at least a week in advance.

If it is not a large formal tea, a silver tray and tea service are not necessary. A china tea set, consisting of a teapot, a creamer for milk, a sugar bowl, an optional pitcher of hot water (for those who prefer weak tea), and a plate for lemon slices arranged on a wooden or glass tray are fine.

At a large tea party, circulate around the room, talking to your guests and seeing that everyone has met and is comfortably enjoying the party.

It was proper in the late seventeenth century for a lady to signal she had sipped enough tea by laying her spoon across the top of her cup, tapping the cup lightly with the spoon, or turning the cup upside down.

Tea pouring involves the most stylized and personal element of the afternoon tea ceremony simply because of the intimate interaction between pourer and guest.

Sugar cubes are preferable, not only for the ritual of using elegant sugar tongs but for their neatness.

For more information and to schedule your tea experience, visit tearosenashville.com . Also, make sure to check out Triple Crown Bakery, located in downtown Franklin, for in house tea service and treats.

HOW WILLIAMSON HEALTH HELPS PATIENTS RECLAIM QUALITY SLEEP

WITH WILLIAMSON HEALTH

Spring can be the perfect time to eat, drink and be merry, but don’t overlook the importance of a good night’s sleep.

“Thirty percent of adults in America don’t get enough sleep,” said Karl Kuhn, M.D. “Sleep is essential for optimal health, and sleep deprivation can affect your immune system, mental health, cognition and more.”

A pulmonologist, Dr. Kuhn is one of a team of physicians and providers that make up Williamson Health Pulmonary and Sleep Medicine, home to both a pulmonary rehabilitation program and an accredited sleep center. The pulmonologists at the clinic treat a variety of conditions, including asthma, sleep apnea, chronic obstructive lung disease (COPD), lung cancer, and emphysema.

“Almost 30% of people over thirty have sleep apnea,” Dr. Kuhn said. “The bulk of what we do is try to determine if a patient has sleep apnea, and, if so, what we can do to treat it.”

To be diagnosed with sleep apnea, patients must stop breathing for at least ten seconds more than five times per hour, Dr. Kuhn explained. A sleep study often helps doctors determine if a patient meets these criteria.

“We have a great sleep lab here, running six nights a week,” Dr. Kuhn said. “We can do home sleep studies if insurance allows or in-lab sleep studies to rule out sleep apnea and other issues affecting your sleep quality.”

If you are diagnosed with sleep apnea, Dr. Kuhn says

there are plenty of options to help improve your sleep quality such as a CPAP machine or the Inspire implant.

“In sleep apnea, the diaphragm muscle moves when you breathe, but your airway is blocked,” Dr. Kuhn explained. “Inspire is an implant that sits under the skin right under the collarbone and it uses an electrical current to open your throat when it feels the diaphragm moving.”

Inspire is now covered by most insurance providers, but candidates must meet specific criteria to qualify: Diagnosed with moderate to severe sleep apnea;

• Intolerant of CPAP; and

• Have a BMI under forty.

For patients who are intolerant of CPAP but don’t meet the criteria to qualify for Inspire, a dental device that helps to open airways is another option. No matter what’s keeping you from catching quality Z’s, Dr. Kuhn recommends talking with your doctor so you can find the right solution and deal with the problem.

“Sleep really does affect every part of your life, from your relationships with friends and loved ones to your overall health,” he said. “Untreated sleep apnea also makes you more tired and three times more likely to have a car wreck, but it also leads to heart attack, heart failure, stroke and more. That’s why it’s so important to get checked out.”

AMastering the Art of French Cooking Trying

TESTING JULIA CHILD’S ICONIC RECIPES

s someone who enjoys cooking, I wanted to attempt to cook some of Julia Child’s iconic recipes from her cookbook, Mastering the Art of French Cooking. Since I saw the 2009 film “Julie and Julia,” starring Amy Adams and Meryl Streep, I have wanted to test the recipes myself. Maybe it’s the aspirational energy that comes with the first of the year, but I was excited to try some of

these recipes out myself. Something to keep in mind: I am by no means a seasoned cook. I like to try out new recipes that look like something I can handle, but I usually prefer to stay in my cooking comfort zone. And boy, did these test me. If there's one tip I can give, I recommend following along with her cooking videos on PBS.org. Not only are they educational, but her presence is a true delight. May we all live like Julia!

BOEUF BOURGUIGNON (Beef Stew in Red Wine)

Before I began flipping through Mastering the Art of French Cooking, I already knew I wanted to cook Julia Child’s infamous Boeuf Bourguignon. There’s a scene in “Julie & Julia” where Amy Adams cooks this dish, and fifteen years later, I’ve been dying to know what it tastes like. And it’s

INGREDIENTS

• 1 tablespoons extra-virgin olive oil

• 6 ounces bacon, roughly chopped

• 3 pounds beef brisket, trimmed of fat (chuck steak or stewing beef) cut into 2-inch chunks

• 1 large carrot sliced 1/2-inch thick

• 1 large white onion, diced

• 6 cloves garlic, minced (divided)

METHOD

DELICIOUS! The only form of red meat I cook is ground beef, mostly because it’s difficult to mess that up. So, this recipe made me a little bit nervous. But the recipe was easy to follow, and it was a hit with my family!

• 1 pinch coarse salt and freshly ground pepper

• 2 tablespoons flour

• 12 small pearl onions (optional)

• 3 cups red wine

• 2-3 cups beef stock (if using 2 cups of wine, use 3 cups beef stock)

• 2 tablespoons tomato paste

1. Preheat oven to 350°F (175°C). Heat the oil in a large Dutch oven or heavy-based pot. Sauté the bacon over medium heat for about 3 minutes, until crisp and browned. Transfer with a slotted spoon to a large dish and set aside.

2. Pat dry beef with paper towel; sear in batches in the hot oil/bacon fat until browned on all sides. Remove to the dish with the bacon.

3. In the remaining oil/bacon fat, sauté the carrots and diced onions until softened, (about 3 minutes), then add 4 cloves minced garlic and cook for 1 minute. Drain excess fat (leave about 1 tablespoon in the pan) and return the bacon and beef back into the pot; season with 1/2 teaspoon coarse salt and 1/4 teaspoon ground pepper. Sprinkle with flour, toss well and cook for 4-5 minutes to brown.

• 1 beef bullion cube, crushed 1 teaspoon fresh thyme, finely chopped

• 2 tablespoons fresh parsley, finely chopped (divided)

2 bay leaves

• 1 pound fresh small white or brown mushrooms, quartered

• 2 tablespoons butter

4. Add the pearl onions, wine and enough stock so that the meat is barely covered. Then add the tomato paste, bullion and herbs. Bring to a simmer on the stove.

5. Cover, transfer to lower part of the oven and simmer for 2 to 3 hours, or until the meat is fall apart tender (adjust the heat so that the liquid simmers very slowly).

6. In the last 5 minutes of cooking time, prepare your mushrooms: Place a colander over a large pot (I do this in my clean kitchen sink). Remove the casserole from the oven and carefully empty its contents into the colander (you want to collect the sauce only). Discard the herbs

LIFESTYLE | Eat, Drink & Be Merry
32 | MARCH 2024

7. Return the beef mixture back into the Dutch oven or pot. Add the mushrooms over the meat.

8. Remove any fat from the sauce (if any) and simmer for a minute or two, skimming off any additional fat that rises to the surface.

9. You should be left with about 2 1/2 cups of sauce thick enough to coat the back of a spoon lightly.

10. If the sauce is too thick, add a few tablespoons of stock. If the sauce

LE MARQUIS

(Chocolate Sponge Cake)

Next, I attempted to make a Chocolate Sponge Cake. I’m even less of a baker than I am a chef, and that showed during this dessert. Listen, this recipe made me appreciate boxed mix like never before. In the recipe, it says that you are supposed to be able to produce two cakes from the original cake, and, as you can see, that did not happen for me. Also,

CAKE INGREDIENTS

• 3 1/2 oz of semisweet chocolate

• 2 tbsp freshly brewed coffee

3 1/2 tbsp unsalted butter, softened

• 3 eggs, yolks and whites separated

• 1/2 c + 1 tbsp granulated white sugar, separated pinch of salt

• 2/3 c cake flour, sifted

METHOD

1. Preheat the oven to 350°F. Grease an 8 inch by 2 1/2 inch deep round cake pan. Line the bottom with a piece of parchment paper. Set aside.

2. Begin by creating your cake batter. In a bowl set over a saucepan filled with simmering water, stir the semisweet chocolate with the freshly brewed coffee until they are combined and the chocolate has melted. Remove the bowl from the saucepan and set on the counter. Add the softened butter, a few pieces at a time, and stir until melted and incorporated in the chocolate. Let this chocolate mixture slightly cool.

3. While the chocolate's cooling, place your egg yolks in a large bowl. Gradually add the 1/2 cup of granulated sugar in as you whisk. Continue whisking until the batter is thick and pale yellow. Fold the cooled chocolate into the yolk batter until combined; set aside.

4. Place your egg whites in the bowl of a stand mixer. Add a pinch of salt, and whisk on high speed until soft peaks form. Add in the tablespoon of granulated sugar and continue whisking on high speed until stiff peaks form. When removing the whisk, the egg white's peak should stick straight out rather than softly curl.

5. Now, in alternating batches, add the egg whites and cake flour to the batter. You can divide this into 3 or 4 batches, gently folding the whites and flour in so as to not deflate the whipped egg whites.

6. Pour the batter into your prepared cake pan, smoothing it out into the pan. Bake on the center rack of your oven for approximately 30 minutes, or until a toothpick inserted in the center comes out clean. The top of your cake will most likely crack. Let the cake cool in its pan for about 5 minutes before running a sharp knife around the edges. Flip the cake out onto a wire cooling rack to cool completely. Use a serrated knife to horizontally cut the cake in the middle to produce 2 cake layers.

is too thin, boil it over medium heat for about ten minutes or until reduced to the right consistency.

11. Taste for seasoning and adjust salt and pepper, if desired. Pour the sauce over the meat and vegetables.

12. If you are serving immediately, simmer the beef bourguignon for 2 to 3 minutes to heat through.

13. Garnish with parsley and serve with mashed potatoes, rice or noodles

something went awry with the consistency and most likely other things, but it was edible! I am now more determined than ever to recreate this until I do Julia Child justice. Until then, I am excited to keep trying to try new recipes, and I encourage you to do the same!

ICING INGREDIENTS

• 2/3 c powdered sugar, sifted

• 1 tsp instant coffee powder

6 oz unsalted butter, 1 1/2 sticks, softened

• 2 tsp egg yolks OR 3-4 freshly brewed coffee

I definitely used the wrong size pan and Expectation
this is where things went wrong!

7. Create the frosting by simply beating the powdered sugar, instant coffee powder, unsalted butter (and egg yolks, if using) together until smooth and creamy. If you are using brewed coffee instead of yolks, add that in last, as needed, to loosen up your frosting and get it to a spreadable consistency.

ARRINGTON VINEYARDS’ JOURNEY THROUGH TASTE & TIME

estled in eastern Williamson County, Arrington Vineyards beckons wine lovers with its stunning wine-country views. Open throughout the year, this winery offers an array of tasting options. Whether you’re a connoisseur seeking a guided wine tasting or a casual visitor looking to unwind while enjoying the beautiful scenery, Arrington Vineyards promises an unforgettable experience. One of the daily tasting options includes a traditional wine tasting inside the casual atmosphere of their Lodge. This indoor, guided tasting includes six award-winning wines. Reservations for this experience are highly recommended.

This March, they are featuring their 2022 Riesling. Savor the refreshing essence of this wine, where delicate notes of citrus blossom and Meyer lemon tantalize the senses, leading to luscious flavors of apricot and pineapple. The grapes were sourced from multiple vineyards in Washington’s esteemed Columbia Valley, an area known for its exceptional Riesling cultivation. After a gentle extraction process, the fresh Riesling juice went through a slow, cold fermentation at 54°F in stainless steel tanks, enhancing its inherent fruitiness. Fermentation was halted before reaching dryness, preserving a hint of natural sugar to balance the wine’s natural acidity. While this Riesling is delightful for immediate enjoyment with its vibrant citrus and nectarine notes, aging reveals a transformation to mellower flavors reminiscent of green tea and honey, offering a nuanced evolution worth savoring. This specific vintage has won seven awards, including Best of Class at the 2023 East Meets West Wine Competition, a Platinum medal at the 2023 Finger Lakes Wine Competition, and a Double Gold medal at the 2024 San Francisco Chronicle Wine Competition. Ideal for a variety of cuisines, this

semi-sweet, fruit-forward wine complements a wide range of dishes, including cheese platters, seafood, sushi, East Asian fare, crisp salads, as well as chicken and turkey dishes, making it a versatile addition to any dining experience. Arrington Vineyards specifically recommends pairing the wine with a Thai Peanut Chicken Wrap.

Although the 2022 Riesling is the wine currently featured, Arrington Vineyards offers twenty-four different awardwinning wines, ensuring that there is a wine for every guest’s taste. Their menu ranges from sparkling wines to barrel-aged dry reds to sweet fruit wines. With spring just around the corner, the winery property is about to be in full swing with its live music and food truck schedule. Music in the Vines is a live music event every Saturday and Sunday, April through December, featuring Jazz and Bluegrass on separate stages. Food Truck Fridays occur from May through October and feature a variety of food trucks and live music.

The winery also has one of the largest wine clubs in the nation. The Club is free to join, and members receive special benefits, including discounts and access to special events and reserve wines. Members are the first to know about everything happening at the winery. Save money, even if it’s your first visit, by signing up for their wine club!

Paul & Kellye King

OFFERING A PLACE FOR ALL TO GATHER

he “I Am Williamson County” column features individuals in Williamson County who are known and unknown as staples of our community, doing good, being seen and unseen, and exuding Williamson County.

This month, we feature Paul and Kellye King. Paul and Kellye own Halfway Market & Diner, which serves as a gathering place for the who’s-who of Williamson County. You can run into everyone from the Mayor, the Sheriff, or your first-grade teacher. Learn more about Paul and Kellye’s passion for providing a sense of community in this edition’s interview.

How long have you lived in Williamson County? What is it about WC that makes it feel like home to you?

Unlike most, we are Williamson County natives, and it will always be home. We are blessed with many life-long friendships, although in our business, we are grateful to meet new friends every day.

What is your profession, and what led you to choose it?

We have had other careers throughout our lifetime, and Paul is still doing some roofing work with Paul King Roofing, which he has had for thirty-five years. However, our “profession” has been operating Halfway Market for the last sixteen years. We bought the business from our dear friends Ernie and Pam Greer because we loved the idea of serving our community in this way. In each location we’ve operated from, we’ve had the unique experience of being a destination for that hometown feel that is being lost...and the food is good, too!

Three words that best describe you. Welcoming, hard-working and caring.

What do you like to do in your spare time?

Family is very important to us; they are our focus when we aren’t at the store. The few times of the year when we shut down, we try to get in the car

and discover new small communities, eat other people’s food, learn their community’s story, and … the occasional trip to the water!

Where is your favorite place to go in WC, and why?

With the hours our business requires, our favorite place to be is … home!

What keeps you motivated and inspired?

This is the easiest question to answer – our customers! It has been a blessing to watch families grow, children become adults, be a part of people’s daily lives and know their stories. The downside is losing dear friends who become like family.

What organizations are you involved with and why?

Running a restaurant doesn’t allow for much time to be involved with much; however, we find ways to support the people and causes that matter to us whenever we can.

What is the one thing you do not go a day without?

Talking to people we love!

We are Williamson County because …

We’d like to think that we offer a place for people to come together, get to know each other over a meal and provide a feeling of community in what has become a much larger, fast-paced county.

SOURDOUGHS OF SOMERSET

Rising to the Occasion

efore settling in Williamson County, Michaella Zetts and her husband lived all over the country working in restaurants in places like Hyde Park, Key West, Golden, Sperryville and Napa Valley. Their journey began at the Culinary Institute of America, where they honed their skills in Michelin-starred restaurants. Michaella devoted a decade to three different three-starred Michelin establishments, including the esteemed French Laundry, where she earned the Employee of the Year award, as well as the Inn at Little Washington and The Restaurant at Meadowood. Although she primarily worked in the front of the house, Michaella spent a significant amount of time immersed in the art of cooking, while her husband, Ryder, favored the back of the house.

In 2019, the Zetts family relocated to Nashville for Ryder’s involvement in opening The Optimist. As their children grew older, Michaella contemplated a job that would align with their schedules and allow her

to work from home. Proposing the idea of crafting sourdough loaves for The Optimist, she envisioned it as a perfect fit, given the demand of approximately twelve loaves per day. Despite her enthusiasm, the decision was made to opt for another vendor.

Undeterred, Michaella launched a Facebook page named “Sourdoughs of Somerset.” Sharing it with three friends, she woke up one day to orders exceeding twenty-five sourdough loaves. Luckily, Michaella loves the process of making sourdough. She was interested in the fermenting process and started making different kinds of vinegar and sauerkraut. Now the preparation and baking of the sourdough loaves is a normal part of her weekly routine. She makes just under 500 loaves weekly, turning her newfound passion into a full-time job. Notably, her husband now works for her!

Operating “Sourdoughs of Somerset” from the comfort of her home, Michaella initiated the Facebook page around the onset of COVID-19,

turning it into a family affair. The temporary closure of The Optimist during the pandemic led to Michaella and her husband offering curated meals for purchase. These endeavors not only generated additional income during the challenging times but also strengthened their ties with the community.

As the business expanded, Michaella and Ryder ventured into hosting pop-ups around the community, initially starting with pickups at their home and later collaborating with different subdivisions and businesses. They now offer dinners, catering, and Kitchen Table Offerings (KTOs). On working together in their house, Michaella says, “We both stay in our lanes. We both work together on the orders, so we know when dough days are when KTOs need to be prepped. We have our own system, and it works.” Their focus for the year is finding a space with a functional pickup kitchen, avoiding the conventional restaurant setup. Having left the restaurant industry, they express contentment with their current path, emphasizing the joy of connecting with the community.

Regarding curated dinners, Michaella explains, “People will usually call me, and then I’ll connect them with Ryder.” Clients share the theme of their celebration

Collaborating with at-home vendors in the community, Michaella often creates packages for orders, working with a butter supplier and “The Jam Lady.” Their passion for what they do, coupled with the ability to connect with the community, has solidified Williamson County as their favorite place to live.

The Empowering Legacy of Cocktail Rings

A GLIMPSE INTO THE ROARING TWENTIES AND BEYOND WITH WALTON’S JEWELRY AND STABLE RESERVE

Renowned for their daring designs and dazzling extravagance, cocktail and dinner rings emerged at the dawn of the 20th century as a cherished emblem of women’s emancipation.

With the onset of World War I, a surge of American women entered the workforce, discovering newfound financial independence and social freedom. This era witnessed a transformation in women’s lifestyle—hem lengths and hair cuts were getting shorter, their attitudes a bit bolder and a surge in their presence in social spaces previously dominated by men. Smoking, dancing and socializing at bars became the norm, signaling a cultural shift until the advent of prohibition

But American women were not so eager to give up their newfound freedoms that easily…

As the speakeasy scene boomed throughout the 1920s, flapper fashion flourished alongside it. Mixed drinks gained popularity to mask the harsh taste of moonshine, and the eye-catching “dinner ring” subtly evolved into the modern-day “cocktail ring.”

Worn on the right hand, but rarely on the ring finger, these rings conveyed a sense of independence and captured the attention of bartenders as women signaled for a drink. Many women even coordinated the color of their gems with their favorite drinks, although birthstones and diamonds were simultaneously becoming wildly popular. Dinner and cocktail rings have since remained a wardrobe staple for women, symbolizing elegance with a touch of

rebellion—a sentiment deeply ingrained in the spirit of Williamson County.

In an era where women struggled for financial recognition, Melba Walton defied the odds by establishing Walton’s Antique and Estate Jewelry. Now boasting a fiftyyear legacy in Downtown Franklin, carried on by Melba’s son, Mike Walton, and now her granddaughter, Julie Walton Garland, the showroom houses a treasure trove of antique dinner and cocktail rings. Our team of GIA-trained experts welcomes you to explore our showroom or shop online at waltonsjewelry.com.

For those seeking a taste of sophistication in March, indulge in a limited-time cocktail named after the trailblazing Melba Walton, crafted by our neighbors at Stable Reserve. They have artfully concocted a special blend to honor Women’s History Month in collaboration with Walton’s Jewelry.

Celebrate the spirit of Women’s History Month with us and savor a taste of sophistication at Stable Reserve—just ask for the ‘Melba,’ featuring a delicate blend of lemon, mint, and Stable Reserve gin infused with lavender (pictured in the top photo). Here’s to shaping elegance and embracing independence in every facet of life!

JAY CUTLER’S POST NFL PLAYBOOK – GRATIS BEER
52 | MARCH 2024

s a former National Football League quarterback, venturing into the brewing world was quite a change of pace for Jay Cutler. But he stepped into it with the same passion and drive as he did on the field. When developing Gratis, Jay and his crew set out to create something better… A clean beer made with only four simple ingredients: Yeast, hops, grain and water. Gratis is brewed based on Reinheitsgebot, or purity law, which is one of the oldest brewing processes created to keep beer pure. Every sip of Gratis is high-quality, clean beer. The product is additive-free, impurity-

free and no junk. They wanted a beer that wasn’t too hoppy and didn’t taste bitter and they believe that their brewmaster nailed it with the process and vision they have established.

Jay’s desire to bring a beer that would be great on any occasion has manifested into what he knew it would be. Jay lives locally and Gratis is proudly brewed locally as well. You can find it in Tennessee bars, restaurants and grocery stores with plans to expand to other states soon. Find locations by visiting gratisbeer.com and learn more in our interview with Jay.

REAL. LOCAL. | 53

When and how did Gratis Beer begin? What was the process in starting the company and getting this particular brand going?

JC: We started this project in the fall of 2022. Designing and deciding which type of beer we wanted to create was a blast. Lipman brews our beer out in The Nations just west of town.

Describe Gratis Beer, in your words, and how it is different.

JC: That’s tough because we have three different beers out, but I think if we had to pick one word it would be smooth. We didn’t want our beers to be bitter or too hoppy and I think we have developed a very drinkable beer with body and taste.

What has been the biggest challenge in this endeavor?

615.435.3867

barrelsandbrews.com

1306

What is your history with the craft of beer and why are you passionate about it?

JC: As I got older, I didn’t like the flavored water that some of the light beers are. I wanted something with a little more substance and body.

JC: Getting people to try new things. There are some very reputable and strong beer brands in the industry. It just takes some time to get it into the hands of the people.

What do you feel Gratis Beer pairs best with (food, atmosphere, event, etc.)?

JC: We designed this beer to go with any situation, whether you are at the pool for the day or want to make a nice dinner and pair some beer with it. We feel like we can fill any situation the customer wants.

What plans do you have for the company in the future?

JC: We are just trying to grow the business and get more beer out in front of people. We realized this is going to be a slow process, and we are just enjoying the ride.

Tell us about your involvement with local charities, like A Vintage Affair.

JC: We live here… We make it a priority to donate to great causes like this. Helping people in our neighborhoods is something we always try to get involved with.

Nolensville Town Square

Nolensville Planning Commission approves Nolensville Town Square

On February 13th, the Town of Nolensville Planning Commission held a public work session meeting to discuss a potential town square project. At the regular session meeting later that night, the Nolensville Planning Commission voted 8-1 and approved the conceptual plan for the new Nolensville Town Square.

Land Innovations will be the developer for this project, which will hopefully begin sometime this year. The project will cover twenty-seven acres of land on the west side of Nolensville Road, approximately one quarter mile south of Rocky Fork Road. It will include 404 new residential units, 253 being multifamily housing units over retail, and another 161 units that will be a combination of manor houses, townhomes, and live/work units. Half of the site will be maintained as green space, for the community to enjoy.

“This is a significant project to the Town, investing over 200 million dollars. The Town has discussed and desired to create a “village” as its center for several years. This project does exactly that,” said Town Manager, Victor Lay.

The development will consist of three phases, each one considering infrastructure, product mix, circulation, construction staging, absorption, and parking. There are many milestones outside Land Innovations control that could both positively and negatively impact the developments progress during the approval, construction and selling phases.

A Forgotten History Gains New Ground

THE LEE-BUCKNER SCHOOL

In the wee hours of February 2nd, a flatbed truck carried unusual cargo through the darkened streets of Franklin. If any downtown residents happened to be awake and look out a window, they might have seen a dilapidated schoolhouse rolling past. The Lee-Buckner Rosenwald School was on the last leg of its relocation, which had begun more than two hours earlier on an overgrown lot in the Duplex/Spring Hill community. The trip ended at Franklin Grove Estates and Gardens, a property owned by the Heritage Foundation of Williamson County. Although this seventeen-mile move was a major milestone, it was only part of the school’s much longer journey from obscurity and the brink of destruction to national prominence.

In the early 20th century, most African American schools in the South suffered from underfunding and serious disrepair. Seeing this deficiency, Booker T. Washington, founder of the Tuskegee Institute,

joined forces with Julius Rosenwald, philanthropist and president of Sears, Roebuck & Co., to build over 5,000 schools for African American children in fifteen states. From 1917 to 1932, Rosenwald schools educated 663,625 students, including such luminaries as poet Maya Angelou, civil rights activist Medgar Evers, and former Congressman John Lewis.

Although the Rosenwald schools didn’t directly challenge segregation, they did help bridge the educational gap between white and African American children. According to the National Trust for Historic Preservation, the effort has been called “the most important initiative to advance Black education in the early 20th century.” And yet, despite this incredible history, many of these schools have been overlooked or torn down. Only ten to twelve percent remain intact today.

peeling paint and boarded-up windows belying its historic significance.

The Heritage Foundation of Williamson County purchased the schoolhouse in 2018, preventing its demolition by developers who had bought the property. Now, with the school’s relocation to Franklin Grove complete, the foundation envisions a vibrant future for Lee-Buckner. They plan to restore the building and install an interpretive exhibit detailing its history, as well as a rotating one about African American history. The project is expected to be completed by late 2025 or early 2026.

Against all odds, Lee-Buckner has come full circle, once again operating as a center of education and community. This modest schoolhouse’s journey stands as a fitting testament to the collective experience of its students and the community it once served: resilience in the face of adversity and the power of education to open new doors. With this restoration comes an opportunity for these voices of the past to be heard, and that’s a story worth listening to for generations to come.

A special thanks to Rachael Finch, the Heritage Foundation’s preservation consultant, for her extensive research on the history of Lee-Buckner.

Glamour

FRIENDS & FASHION

ark your calendars for April 2nd as the Music City Center transforms into a hub of glamour and giving for a cause close to our hearts. The Friends & Fashion event, organized by Friends of Monroe Carell Jr. Children’s Hospital at Vanderbilt, promises a day of style, solidarity and support.

Kicking off at 10am, attendees are invited to indulge in the ultimate shopping experience with an exclusive auction featuring over 100 glamorous items. From coveted cosmetic procedures to luxurious girls’ trips, there’s something for everyone. Peruse on-site pop-ups showcasing Dillard’s top brands – a perfect opportunity to treat yourself or find something special while contributing to a worthy cause. The highlight of the day begins at 11:30am with a fabulous luncheon and fashion show with Tuwanda Coleman, former producer and host of Talk of the Town and a Monroe Carell Advisory Board Member, serving as emcee for the event. But this isn’t just any fashion show – it’s a celebration of resilience and hope, as patients of Monroe Carell Jr. Children’s Hospital share their inspiring stories through the art of fashion while also walking the runway themselves.

Friends of Monroe Carell Jr. Children’s Hospital at Vanderbilt is more than just a volunteer organization – it’s a community dedicated to supporting the mission of the hospital. Through fundraising, community awareness, and services to patients and their families, Friends is vital

in ensuring every child receives the care they need and deserve. The need for support for patients at Monroe Carell Jr. Children’s Hospital at Vanderbilt is significant, and you can make a tangible difference. Whether through a donation to this year’s Friends & Fashion event or by becoming an annual supporter, your contribution will directly impact the lives of children and families facing medical challenges.

Monroe Carell Jr. Children’s Hospital at Vanderbilt provides hope and healing for children across the region. As the most comprehensive children’s hospital in the state, it provides a range of primary and sub-specialty services tailored to meet the unique healthcare needs of children, from newborns to young adults. One person (of many) who has directly benefited from the Children’s Hospital is Lauren Hocker. Her stepson required emergency surgery when he was twelve years old, and she says that the facilities, doctors and staff at the hospital were truly remarkable. “I’ve been a dedicated supporter ever since,” says Lauren.

Her dedication has led her to be one of this year’s co-chairs for the Friends & Fashion event, along with Lacey Keally and Kelli Dill. “Each year, Friends & Fashion showcases the mission of Monroe Carell as families with an experience at the hospital serve as the models – truly inspirational,” says Lauren. “Our primary objective is to raise funds for Monroe Carell. This year’s event will direct funds towards growth in the hospital’s pediatric rehabilitation and psychological services, and a vision for the first and

only pediatric inpatient rehabilitation facility in the state. As a parent myself, I cannot fathom the mental and financial challenges these families face. Expansion of rehabilitation services for children in our region will certainly provide a glimmer of hope in what is undoubtedly a difficult situation.”

Each year, many of the previous sponsors return to support the cause and event, and the cochairs aim to envision something fresh and distinct from previous years. “Our primary focus is building a great event with fresh ideas, filling the room with supporters and, of course, netting the maximum amount of funds we can support the hospital! A successful fundraising event directly benefits families at Monroe Carell, like those our guests will see walk the runway at the event,” Lauren says. “In addition to having families serve as models this year, our attendees will also see healthcare heroes walking the runway. The program will include a Q&A between a rehabilitation patient and a pediatric physical therapist who cared for several of the patients who, thanks to the care received, will be able to walk the runway! To add to the excitement,

“ ”

we’re setting up high-end, interactive cosmetic pop-ups at the front marketplace, sure to be a hit among the attendees.”

Get your seats or reserve a table for this year’s event at vanderbilthealth.org/friendsandfashion. Also, visit childrenshospital.vanderbilt.org/friends to learn more about how you can make a lasting impact on the lives of children and families in our community. Let’s come together in style and solidarity at the Friends & Fashion event, where fashion meets purpose.

A CONVERSATION WITH THE LEGENDARY EASTER BUNNY

e all know the REAL meaning of Easter. If not, it’s time to hear the good news. Easter offers us a promise for the future and hope and joy for today through the death and resurrection of our Lord Jesus Christ.

Now, that's the TRUE story of Easter. What about the more secular side of this welcome to spring. As early as the seventeenth century, German folklore references the legend of Oschter Haws, German for “Easter hare.” The mythical rabbit who visited children while they slept and rewarded them with colored eggs for their good behavior, which it left in nests that German children made from hats.

I know that at our house, we get excited about this “Easter Bunny,” but who is he? I had the opportunity to learn more as we prepare for

him to hop on in to town. I am happy to share a conversation with Peter Cottontail, no finer a Southern Gentleman to be found.

Wow! I have wanted to meet you all my life. So, looking forward to talking with and learning more about you. Let’s dive down the rabbit hole to separate fact from fiction and bust a few hare-raising myths. Tell me a little about yourself.

PC: I live on Easter Island, of course. My family has lived here for many years. Its subtropical weather is perfect at sixty-five to seventy-five degrees year-round and sunny. We are originally from Germany. My heritage goes back to the 1600s. I am part of the “Hare” family. Arctic hares, more specifically, our fur turns white in the winter so as to blend in with ice and snow but blue-gray in the spring and summer to match rocks and vegetation. When I got older, we

moved to a warmer climate to escape the cold.

When did you start visiting kids on Easter?

PC: In 1682, it all began in Germany laying eggs in the garden, which children would hunt for — just like your Easter egg hunts today. I started out as a judge of sorts, deciding what kids were “naughty or nice” and leaving eggs for the ones who were nice. I guess I have grown soft, or my heart is bigger, but today I want to visit all the children. All kids are “good,” and some need some joy in their lives. In 1757, I brought my bit of happiness to America and elsewhere; traditions surrounding the “Easter Bunny” (Hare) grew more elaborate with time, featuring chocolate bunnies and chocolate eggs, as well as toys. If you’re keeping score on my age, yes, almost 350 years, but I don’t look a day over 250!

Dolly Parton once said, “I still believe in Santa, the Easter Bunny, the Tooth Fairy, and true love. Don’t even try to tell me different.” And why not? What do you say to those who don’t believe?

PC: We all need something to believe in. Especially our children. Having hope is what Easter is all about. So why not make it amazing for them? All I am doing is bringing happiness, hope and dreams.

What does Easter mean to you?

PC: It is a time to celebrate life. A time for new beginnings. The great gift of Easter is HOPE. Hope for us all.

Easter has become very commercialized. Do you think that takes away from the meaning?

PC: No. I love it. Eight out of ten people celebrate Easter as they should. Yes, it is very commercialized. In fact, it is estimated that there will be $20 billion dollars spent on Easter candy, clothes, and flowers this year – about $250 dollars per household with children. Everyone

should have a chocolate bunny.

Obviously, I think you should celebrate. Make family traditions with your family. One way to celebrate is to have an Easter egg hunt. Easter egg hunts are proof that children can find things when they really look. You can even start a new neighborhood or community egg hunt like The White House’s annual Easter Egg Roll, which began in 1878. What a great excuse to get together.

You could even buy new outfits for the family in your favorite pastel colors. Back in the mid-1800s in New York, people believed that buying new clothes to wear on Easter would bring them good luck for the rest of the year. And, lucky for us, the custom continues today.

You can have the family together for dinner after church and take many photos. Your grandchildren will be glad you did.

Thank you, Peter. What a pleasure it has been to speak with you.

In closing, this Easter, teach your children the gift of giving. If you know a person who is alone, visit them. Brighten their Easter with an Easter basket or invite them for dinner. Or treat a family who maybe can’t spend the $250 dollars, with some Peeps and candied eggs. Why not make a family Easter basket, take food, give a gift card…and give a smile and a warm hug? Afterall, the TRUTH of Easter starts and ends with the greatest love of all time. Spread that love at Easter and always.

ABC ABC BEYOND

PREPPING FOR PRE-K AND BEYOND WITH EXPERT ADVICE

As we step into the new year, it’s never too early to chart the course for your child’s academic journey – a journey that begins well before their kindergarten year. Yet, with the plethora of options available and the influx of information at hand, making the right decisions for your child’s formative years can feel daunting.

EARLY LEARNING CENTER

With years of experience in early childhood education, Julia Belsante, Director of the Early Learning Center at Battle Ground Academy, offers insight to help parents make informed decisions about pre-K.

BENEFITS OF PRE-K

“Pre-K education lays the foundation for vital academic and schoolreadiness skills,” says Belsante. “It allows students to learn interpersonal skills, problem-solving abilities, and social and emotional vocabulary under the guidance of trained teachers.”

“As opposed to traditional daycare, a formal pre-K program offers a variety of lasting benefits for children as they begin to explore the world around them,” Belsante explains.

“Although academics are a large part of pre-K, my hope is that students learn to ask big questions and acquire the tools and skills to seek the answers,” says Belsante.

Enrolling your child in a pre-K program ensures they engage in activities that enhance fine and gross motor skills, literacy, numeracy, and selfreliance while fostering effective interaction with peers and mentors.

PREPARING FOR CHANGE

Transitioning to pre-K can be a significant adjustment for both children and parents alike. Recognizing this, Belsante underscores the importance of preparing children for the new routine.

Belsante encourages parents to explain what a day at pre-K will look like for their children and set expectations beforehand. Avoid projecting your own emotions on the experience or emphasizing how much you will miss your child during the school day.

“Remember that you decide the tone of the experience through communication with your child,” she says.

CHOOSING WISELY

“No child can do it all, and that’s OK,” says Belsante. “It’s important to find a pre-K program that meets your child’s needs, celebrates their strengths and supports them in areas where they have room to grow.”

When searching for the right pre-K program, Belsante encourages parents to look for teacher experience, a whole-child approach to learning and ample opportunities for sensory engagement. She cautions against overly academic programs, emphasizing the importance of a balanced educational foundation that nurtures curiosity and exploration.

“The ability to memorize letters and numbers is a very simple form of learning,” says Belsante. “Pre-K should be more about how students think and explore the world around them and ensuring that they are in an environment that fosters that mentality.”

BGA is relaunching their pre-K program this year with two pre-K Four classes and one pre-K Five class. The Early Learning Center will adopt the same inquiry-based approach to learning that distinguishes BGA, but adapted for younger learners. Admissions for Fall 2024 are open.

SEUSS LOOSE

CELEBRATE DR. SEUSS AND READING ALL MONTH LONG

ho doesn’t have a favorite Dr. Seuss book? Maybe it’s in the Hat and that comical and clever character that we have all read and watched for a laugh and a rhyme. Or maybe it’s your copy of Oh the Places You’ll Go, received as a graduation gift and remaining a reminder of all that life holds for you no matter your age. Perhaps, it’s Green Eggs and Ham, and the forever memorable lines you find yourself quoting even as an adult. Perhaps, no other children’s author inspires such memories and preserved childhood observances in literature than Seuss and his collection of books.

His body of work inspired “Read Across America Day,” also known as “Dr Seuss Day,” as a yearly observance in the USA inaugurated by the National Education Association. It is held to commemorate the March 2nd birthday of iconic American author, Theodor Seuss Geisel also known as Dr. Seuss. The celebration is to encourage children in reading more books and also getting them excited about reading.

Seuss is widely recognized for his contribution as a writer, poet and cartoonist. He wrote forty-six books for children mainly based on imaginative characters and rhymes. His work has also been adopted into many television specials,

feature films and television series. He credited his mother to be his first inspiration. She often chanted rhymes to her children in order to sooth them to sleep which developed the desire and affection in Geisel to create rhymes. His early life in Springfield and the memories of his childhood had an influence on his writings which can be observed in his work.

The ten-year period between 1950 and 1960 saw the incredible Dr. Seuss write some of the most classic pieces of children’s literature in history. He followed up the release of If I Ran The Zoo in 1950 with Horton Hears a Who!

If I Ran the Circus in 1956, The Cat in the Hat and How the Grinch Stole in 1957 and Green Eggs and Ham in 1960. It is safe to say that Dr. Seuss is a cultural phenomenon, with the legacy of his work stretching far beyond his own life, inspiring kids and adults to keep reading not just his books, but books in general!

“You can find magic wherever you look. Sit back and relax, all you need is a book.”

How to celebrate Dr Seuss Day?

The whimsical world of Dr. Seuss is part of many children’s first foray into the literary world, which is why it’s such a fun day to celebrate. On the day, children get together to read his books – lots of them sound even better out loud! Sometimes, children might choose to dress up as their favorite characters, too.

Most importantly, Dr. Seuss Day is a celebration of children’s literature. So, if Dr. Seuss isn’t your favorite, you can still get involved by celebrating his influence on children’s literature, and by enjoying some of your own favorite authors.

Five Seusstastic Ideas for Celebrating Dr. Seuss Day

1. Have fun making The Cat in the Hat hats.

2. Discover your child’s favorite Dr. Seuss book and read it together.

3. Throw a party to celebrate Dr. Seuss’s birthday. Have everyone come costumed as a different character.

4. Make creative Seuss-inspired crafts. Use favorite Seuss book quotes in each.

5. Make Seuss sticks for math manipulatives. Make learning fun!

Whether through the books of Dr. Seuss or any book that inspire and delight – always maintain reading in your children’s lives. Through the lines of a book and the images contained within, imaginations are born and nurtured – fostering a lifetime of: “The more that you read, the more things you will know. The more that you learn, the more places you’ll go.”

The Music of the Stone Horses

THE ARTISTIC WORLD OF PAUL CHASE

meet Paul Chase, who, with his wife, Mary, call the charming town of Galena, Illinois, their home. Paul has transformed his studio in Galena into a creative haven. Armed with a degree in Art and a master’s in communications, both earned at the University of Wisconsin-Platteville, Paul’s academic journey laid the groundwork for his artistic adventures. With over thirty years of experience, he has passionately shared his knowledge, teaching art and graphic arts at both the high school and college levels. Paul recently retired from Jo Davies Carroll Area Vocational Center. His devotion to the arts is reflected not only in his creations but also in his extensive career as an educator.

Paul’s artistic journey has been an exploration of the profound connections between music and visual expression. Music, particularly the symphony of guitars, has been a driving force behind hundreds of paintings and sculptures he created. Many of these artworks find their residence in Nashville at the Millennium Maxwell House Hotel, a testament to the enduring impact of music on his creative endeavors.

The influence of music doesn’t stop at guitars for Paul; the “music” of horses has

“High

also played a pivotal role in shaping his artistic vision. Despite having limited direct encounters with live horses, his experiences in Montana, where he kept horses for his children, and a transformative visit to a cattle and guest ranch kindled a deep connection with the essence of horses. The symphony of the horse, with its design, passion, movement, and beauty, captivated Paul, beckoning him to channel his creativity into the sculpting of stone.

From guitars to stone carvings, Paul’s artistic evolution took a significant turn during a visit to the Cochise Marble Co. Quarry in Tucson, Arizona. Here, he carved his first stone horse, “The Bronc,” a pivotal moment marking his transition from guitar art to horse sculpture. He later received a gift of Tennessee Red Marble from a fellow sculptor, which led to the creation of “The Prince,” a stunning manifestation of design, movement, and musicality embodied in the form of a horse.

Paul’s affinity for the red cedar marble from the Tennessee Marble Co. in Friendsville became a defining element in his work. The stones he acquired from various locations across the country, including Colorado, Arizona, Vermont, and Tennessee, spoke to him uniquely. Guided by the distinctive voice of each stone, Paul transformed blocks and boulders into exquisite “Stone Horses” using traditional sculpting tools like chisels, hammers, mallets, rasps, and files, alongside modern power tools.

Describing his process, Paul emphasized his love for “releasing” the horse from the rough stone, sometimes leaving the organic textures intact to enhance the sense of motion and music. Other times, he ventured into abstraction, transforming horse heads into intricate patterns and geometric shapes, playing with contrasts between polished surfaces and the raw texture of the stone.

The journey of Paul’s Stone Horses continued as they found a home in Dawn Ann Billings’ shop, Moo Country, in Leiper’s Fork. Here, they are cared for and cherished, an homage to the enduring beauty and resonance of Paul’s creations. COTE DEONATH ON CHANNELING ELVIS’ SPIRIT

Elvis Festival is coming up! I am lifetime fan of Elvis… but who isn’t, really? I recently had the opportunity to talk with the 2023 Ultimate Elvis Tribute Artist World Champion, Cote Deonath to get some insight into the world of impersonating the King. Got a particularly memorable fan interaction or on-stage mishap to share?

CD: I was in Australia two weeks ago, and the Australian culture is just so similar but so different. It’s such a culture shock, but you know Elvis had many things thrown at him on stage. You don’t really go through school for this job, right? You don’t really get prepared for the things that you experience while you’re on stage. But I was giving out scarves and there was a fan that threw some of their unmentionables on stage. And I just completely froze. I was like, you gotta be kidding me. This has never happened to me before in my life, and the audience was just dying, obviously laughing. And it was a joke because they were the size of a parachute.

Is there a current artist who embodies the spirit of Elvis in today’s music scene? What parallels do you see between them and the King?

CD: Bruno Mars, in my opinion. I know that he has a huge fan following, but Bruno has reinvented himself so many different times. When he first on the scene he was a teeny bopper, and he was a was a heartthrob. And really from there, he’s had this metamorphosis of becoming an R&B star. With all his different music eras, he’s constantly reinventing himself, and there’s an Elvis connection there. He used to be the youngest Elvis tribute artist.

BECOMING

the King

LIFESTYLE | Arts & Culture
82 | MARCH 2024

What was the moment that you realized this would be a career or could be a career?

CD: : I was in school to be a firefighter EMT. I went on a cruise ship one of my times off from college, and the old legends in the tribute artist business were like, “Okay, kid, you’re going to be a firefighter? No, Stick with us. You’re gonna live the life.” And so, I got off the boat and this was 2016, I was eighteen at the time, and I told my parents I would really, really like to try this entertainer thing. I really wanted to see where it would take me. And it was good. I won Tupelo in 2017. A year after that, I made it to the ultimate Elvis contest. I started making waves. So, I mean it was good. But it was never really like, “Oh my God, I’m making a killing at this.” It was like, OK, well, yeah, this is good for now. I work with what I love. I don’t consider it a job. When I started to produce, I produced my first show in 2018 and I was only twenty years old. We ended up selling 804 tickets for that show, and it sold out. With the money I made that night, I felt like I had stumbled on my niche, and I loved doing it. I loved getting creative and putting my own twist on shows. I was the first Elvis tribute artist to produce his own shows. Mind you, I was the first ever twenty-year-old ETA to have any power and change the norm of what you did in the industry. With hard work and determination, and people like Brian and Tom of the Nashville Elvis Festival and Tupelo Festival behind me really giving me a chance to showcase and put my talent in front of the Elvis fans, that’s really where I knew that there was weight to this. This became not just a hobby but a full-time job. Now I have my company’s licensing endorsed by Elvis Presley Enterprises, and we did ten events last year, which is unheard of in our industry.

Out of all of Elvis’s songs, which one is your favorite and why does it resonate with you so much?

CD: “Unchained Melody” is my favorite

Elvis song, mostly for the fact Elvis was broken at that time. At that time, Elvis was not the best looking. He didn’t look like our Elvis at the end, but I mean, it still was Elvis. Most people think “Hound Dog,” “Jailhouse Rock,” “Suspicious Minds,” as the best Elvis songs. But I look at Elvis’s voice, and I look at him as one of the best vocalists of all time. He was the greatest entertainer of all time. And that song, it was like he poured everything into it.

What about Elvis resonates the most with you?

CD: His charisma. He’s still oozing charisma. Over forty-five years after he’s been gone, that’s why people keep coming back. Elvis has a fan base that is unlike anything that you will ever see.

What’s your favorite Elvis outfit to wear, and what makes it special?

CD: Obviously, we got to talk about the jumpsuits because those are the most elaborate. If I had to pick a favorite jumpsuit, I’d have to choose his Peacock suit. It’s a gorgeous suit. If I had to pick a second, it would be the “Aloha from Hawaii” suit he wore in 1973. But those costumes make or break you, man; you must have a good costume. Elvis dressed sharp every night.

If you could ask Elvis one question, what would it be?

CD: Oh man. I don’t know if it would be a question. I just think I would tell him “Thank you.”

Thank you, Cote. Can’t wait to see you at the festival.
