I have been thinking a lot about legacy lately.

Maybe it is because I will celebrate a birthday this month, or because the magazine turns fifteen this year or because I am in the thick of raising children and trying hard to instill in them all the things I consider the legacy of my grandparents and parents. All are true, but an old soul like me relies on the concept of a legacy maybe more often than others do. And the definition: “A legacy is intangible values, like traditions or reputations, passed down from ancestors or predecessors; it commonly refers to the lasting impact of a person’s life on other’s,” often resonates with me daily since I have so many living legacies I am blessed to surround myself with. I find myself often, praying - please can I leave something behind of myself, my work and my involvement, even half as relevant as those who have imparted themselves so profoundly on me.

late, to find myself tested in many ways as to what really is important to me and to what lengths I am willing to fight for something, support someone or take a stand. What are those defining elements that make up who we are and what impression we leave? I know I have a wealth of good things instilled in me from my family, friends and mentors, and I count myself so very privileged to be the recipient of knowing how to treat others, speak to others and make others feel good. I know how to set a table and host a party. I know what it means to live up to promises and sometimes fall short, but I always try to be the best person I can be in all situations.

I know I will never watch someone be bullied, intimidated or mistreated if I am in a position to stand up. And I am learning every day that what others say about me is none of my business! I know I will pass all of this on to my own children and maybe, hopefully, be remembered that way.

The Ladies of Distinction: Iconic Women of Williamson event this month was created, selfishly, and solely for the purpose of recognizing so many of the people, women, in my life who have made such lasting impacts on me personally, but certainly, have legacies of work and giving back that they will leave to our community as a whole. I see it every day, and with the event now in its third year, I am so grateful to know, beyond my own personal experiences, that there are so many women who definitely fit the description of iconic in one way or another.

For now, very much alive and in a place where I can consciously decide what I want my legacy to be: I want all of those things to be true about me.

Which brings me back to my original ponderings about what we leave behind; what we do when we are here, and how all of that becomes our legacy - big or small. I have had occasion, of

So today, like all those Iconic Women of Williamson and so many others before me, I will be thinking about my legacy daily, making sure that when I turn a wrong foot, I make it right; when I veer off course, I get back on track. I will always be mindful that little eyes are watching to see how I act and forming their own opinions of what their legacy looks like.

utritional needs aren’t one-size-fits-all — especially for women, whose bodies change significantly across life stages.

Calcium remains important throughout life, especially during breastfeeding and after menopause.

“Our bodies are different from men’s, so we have different nutritional needs,” said Melanie Parnell, a registered dietitian with Williamson Health. “Women’s bodies are designed to build another human, so we have a little more fat, a little less muscle and different hormonal needs.”

“As we get older, our bone remineralization doesn’t keep up with our bone loss, and women often start to experience bone deficits,” Parnell said. “It also coincides with a time in our lives when we tend to become more sedentary.”

Parnell, who teaches in Williamson Health’s diabetes prevention program and works as an outpatient dietitian, offered a few tips to help women make healthier nutritional choices.

UNDERSTAND THAT NUTRITIONAL NEEDS EVOLVE WITH AGE.

From adolescence to menopause, women’s bodies undergo many transitions. As women move through these life stages, their nutritional needs may need adjustment.

“In adolescence, our bones do a lot of growing, so it’s important to work on bone health and density then,” Parnell said. “This starts around ages ten to fourteen, depending on when women begin puberty, and continues into early adulthood.”

She recommends calcium- and vitamin D-rich foods like dairy, leafy greens and calciumfortified foods, along with proteins such as meat, poultry and fish to support bone strength.

In addition to a healthy diet, weight-bearing exercise — such as walking, jogging or weight lifting — helps maintain bone strength and muscle mass as women age.

PAY ATTENTION TO COMMON DIETARY DEFICIENCIES.

Iron, calcium and vitamin D deficiencies are common among women, Parnell said.

Physiological changes during menstruation, pregnancy, perimenopause and menopause can make women more prone to these deficiencies.

“If women aren’t getting enough calcium during pregnancy, the body will draw calcium from the mother’s bones to support the baby, and we can’t get that calcium back in easily,” Parnell said.

A diet rich in lean meats, leafy greens and dairy can help maintain nutrient levels. Supplements may be needed in certain stages, but should always be guided by a physician.

FOCUS ON BALANCE.

In her conversations with women about nutrition, Parnell has uncovered several misconceptions about healthy diets.

“I see a lot of extremes,” Parnell said. “Some women completely slash carbs out of their diets.

There’s a lot of skipping meals and inconsistency around how or what they eat. Others try to take every diet plan out there and combine them all.”

Rather than resorting to extremes, she suggested focusing on a balanced diet filled with whole foods, healthy proteins, calciumrich dairy, fiber, whole grains and healthy fats, while limiting sugar, sodium and saturated fats.

Supplements can help with deficiencies, but “food is better,” Parnell said.

HEALTHY NUTRITION TAKES PLANNING AND PRIORITIZING.

Eating well doesn’t always require a complete diet overhaul. Small, consistent changes add up.

“It doesn’t have to be hard, but you do need a strategy for success,” Parnell said. “Focus on what you’re doing well, then plan and prioritize small changes you can make.”

Above all, she advised, give yourself some grace and strive for consistency, not perfection.

any women in our community face the challenges of addiction, sometimes fighting in complete isolation, and other times surrounded by a strong support group. Since 2004, The Next Door Recovery, a dedicated nonprofit, has played a vital role in the fight against substance abuse. Having served over 17,000 women, the organization has been very important for positive change and hope.

What began as a group called the “Wild Praying Women,” has evolved into a powerful mission to empower women to achieve lifelong recovery.

The Next Door Recovery is a gender specific treatment program that specializes in women and even offers services to women who are pregnant. A gender-specific program can be more beneficial because you are surrounded by professionals and peers who understand you. Women can carry trauma that is deeply personal and can only be understood by another woman, which is what makes The Next Door Recovery special.

Once a woman decides to take the courageous leap and seek help, they can start with a confidential conversation to understand her specific needs, history and current situation. The team then creates the woman’s individualized plan focusing on not only recovery, but also mental health, trauma healing and life stability. For women who are pregnant, The Next Door Recovery offers support through thirty-eight weeks of gestation, with an in-house OBGYN and doula available on staff. In Nashville,

they offer seventy-nine beds in their inpatient treatment and have capacity for forty-eight women in their outpatient programs. They do all of this in a faithbased environment to promote spiritual growth as well.

If you think a loved one is in need of The Next Door Recovery’s service, Rachel Morris, Executive Director, and Amanda Dunlap, LPC-MHSP, Clinical Executive Director of The Next Door Recovery, shared that, “Often, families sense something is wrong before they can fully name the problem. You may notice withdrawal from family and friends, sudden mood changes, trouble at work, financial issues, neglecting responsibilities, unhealthy relationships, or repeated attempts to stop substance use without success.

The Next Door Recovery (TNDR) has served more than 17,000 women since 2004, and many of the women who come to us share these same warning signs. If substance use is creating chaos, pain or instability in someone’s life, it is time to reach out for support. The earlier support begins, the greater the opportunity for lasting recovery.”

Recovery is a lifelong journey that requires ongoing commitment and support. It is not a quick fix, but with the right resources and a dedicated community, lasting healing is possible. Rachel Morris and Amanda Dunlap also shared that, “Once treatment is complete, the work of recovery continues through ongoing support such as outpatient counseling, peer communities, relapse

We take a holistic approach because lasting recovery requires helping women create healthy, meaningful, independent lives with restored relationships and renewed purpose.”

Women who complete the program feel confident not only in themselves but also in their parenting skills and relationships with those around them. Many women even choose to come back and mentor women in the same situation they were once in. This in return builds the cycle for generational change.

ach year, YOUR Williamson has the privilege of celebrating a group of extraordinary women whose lives reflect the very best of our community.

These are women who give generously of their time, talent and hearts; often behind the scenes, rarely asking for recognition. They are leaders, mentors, caregivers, creatives, advocates, visionaries - and their impact is undeniable.

The 2026 Ladies of Distinction come from different backgrounds and represent a wide range of industries: from public service to business, philanthropy, education and beyond. Some are lifelong residents with deep generational roots in Williamson County. Others, like so many who now call this place home, arrived with only a suitcase and a dream. What they share is a commitment to leaving things better than they found them and the grace, strength and persistence to do just that.

These women are remarkable, not just for what they’ve done, but for doing it with resilience, humility and heart.

Whether leading a classroom or a company, launching

a business or a nonprofit, mentoring young people or helping a neighbor in need, each of these ladies have quietly changed the landscape of our community in meaningful and lasting ways. We honor them not because they asked for it, but because their stories deserve to be told. Their lives remind us that true leadership is rooted in service, and real legacy is measured by the lives we touch. These women are proof that you don’t need a spotlight to make a difference – but sometimes, it’s time to turn one on.

Doris MCMILLAN Doris McMillan has touched many lives in her thirty-eight years in Williamson County, knowing that civic engagement is key to a thriving community. As Doris says, “the heart must remain intact with the actions and devotion of duty when asked to serve.”

Doris's twenty years with New Hope Academy reinforced her stated “triangular lifestyle” of “family, church and school.” As the Alumni and Community Relations Manager, Doris has the opportunity to equip young hearts and minds with the tools they need to flourish.

Doris has been involved in a multitude of philanthropic efforts, including, but not limited to: Mercy Healthcare, Jack and Jill of America Inc., The Tennessee Historical Commission and more. It is the coming generations that inspire

her dedicated work, ensuring that she plays her part in securing a better future for all children and their families.

Doris’s family and faith are the cornerstone of her life, grounding every effort and accomplishment. As a mother to three daughters, Doris has learned that loving and being loved unconditionally is the most rewarding aspect of living.

According to Doris, “a life of purpose yields great rewards - personally and professionally.”

Doris worked as the seamstress for country music icon Naomi Judd for twenty-three years and now has two dresses on exhibit at the Country Music Hall of Fame.

Ondrea JOHNSON Fifth-generation Tennessean, Ondrea Johnson, has her roots grounded in Williamson County and has flourished within the community.

According to Ondrea, the county is “more than just a subdivision,” and encapsulates enormous amounts of goodness. Ondrea sees Franklin as a place where “people put their politics and differences aside,” and “roll up their sleeves,” to show up for the community.

Ondrea has done her part to show up for the people of Williamson County, and more than that, she has shown up for our animals.

Ondrea has been the Director of Williamson County Animal Center for eight years; working in innovative ways to change the way that we approach animal care. WCAC has been recognized nationally for programs such as the Pawsability Program, which helps adults

with intellectual differences have meaningful volunteer experiences with animals. Ondrea says that WCAC has a mantra of: “you can’t help animals without helping the people who care for them.”

Between the humans and the animals of Williamson County, Ondrea keeps a busy schedule. On her cattle farm, Ondrea and her husband, Glenn, raised five children together, all of them growing up to follow in their mother’s footsteps - giving back to their communities with open hearts. As Ondrea looks back on her younger self, she says she would tell her: “This all adds up to something beautiful,” and beautiful it is. All of the stamina, gumption and kindness that Ondrea brings to this community is simply irreplaceable.

Elaine ANDERSON Born and raised in Williamson County, Elaine Anderson has spent her life serving the community she loves so dearly. It is not uncommon for Elaine to regularly run into people on the street whose lives she has changed for the better, and these encounters remain one of her favorite parts of living and working in the county.

Elaine became familiar with the concept of working hard, as a child, on her family farm.

When tough times came around, her family banded together. Their ability to lean on each other has influenced how Elaine moves through her community. As she looks back at her childhood self, Elaine says she would tell her: "to keep up the strong work ethic,” but never forget to “stop and smell the roses.”

The “roses” in Elaine’s life take on different forms. Her late husband, Floyd, being one of

them, as well as her daughter and grandson.

Elaine’s greatest personal accomplishment in life is the time spent with her family.

In 1967, Elaine took a chance and applied for an open position in the county clerk’s office. She was hired on the spot and started working the next morning. Years down the road, in 1998, Elaine became the Williamson County Clerk and remained in the position until 2021. In 2023, after almost fifty nine years of serving her community, Elaine received the special, well-deserved honor of being inducted into the County Officials Association of Tennessee (COAT) Hall of Fame, representing the County Clerks Association of Tennessee.

She has been an inspiration to strangers and loved ones alike. Her grandson, Jeff Whidby, now serves as the County Clerk, taking over for his grandmother in 2021.

Pamela LEWIS Pam Lewis has been in Williamson County since 1993 and has continually spearheaded preservation and reclamation efforts in Franklin.

One of her greatest accomplishments was purchasing and protecting the historic Harrison House and its surrounding acreage. Pam’s other preservation projects include: The Eastern Flank, Collins Farm, the battlefield land on Columbia Pike and so much more.

Pam, an already published writer, most recently released Benjamin Franklin - America’s First Rockstar, as she gifted the City of Franklin this year, with “Ben on the Bench,” a lifesize Benjamin Franklin statue placed in downtown Franklin as a celebration of the town's renowned forefather and namesake. Pam Lewis has not only preserved Franklin’s past - she has repersonalized it, reminding the city who it was 30 | MAY 2 026

first and welcoming the next generation into that ongoing history.

Time, Pam recognizes, is “our most valuable resource,” and she has not squandered it. For Pam, there is so much to “accomplish, see, help and embrace,” in the world. She is a jack of all trades, participating in tai chi, art, reading (at least three books at a time), writing, travel, karaoke and even working as the President and CEO of PLA MEDIA, an award-winning PR and marketing company. If you happen to see her on the streets of downtown Franklin, chances are that she will be talking to one of her many admirers - little “collisions of community” as she calls them. Franklin is a better place with Pam in it, complete with grace, kindness and, especially, her sense of humor.

Denise ANDRE The beautiful historic courthouse in Franklin’s square caught the eye of young law student Denise Andre, setting up for a dream that would very soon become reality. For the last twenty years, Denise has presided on the bench in General Sessions Court. Prior to that 2006 election, where she was elected as a judge, Denise practiced as an attorney.

To make the move to “Judge Andre,” it took serious consideration and prayer, and her one condition was that the race was to be run fairly.

The view from her first few years on the bench motivated Judge Andre to make a change that impacted lives, especially the lives of those facing addiction. Along with the help of many others, in 2010, Judge Andre started the first recovery court in General Sessions, the DUI Recovery Court. It was this mission that proved to be her purpose in life, as she says, a purpose

to “help restore lives in our community while helping to make our roadways safer.”

Judge Andre is inspired by those who overcome extreme hardships to excel despite the challenges. It is because of this that she says she “approaches difficulties with optimism.”

The fact that her work can directly improve a life is what motivates her to work harder, and she strives to always think outside of the box.

In the words of Judge Andre: “It takes hard work, perseverance and opportunities to reach success in one’s life, but success is never achieved alone. In life, everyone needs the help of others along the way to achieve their goals.

I always want to remember those who helped me along the way. Without them, success could not be accomplished. They are truly the jewels in one’s life.”

Evelyn HICKERSON Evelyn Hickerson is a native of the historic Natchez Street community, and it was her upbringing in Williamson County that gave her the necessary tools to give back to the community in such a monumental way. As a child, she watched her father aid struggling families from his small-town grocery in the Natchez neighborhood, and his gestures showed Evelyn that this was not merely about food, but about hope. As she says, her community “found strength in unity” and “shared the responsibility of nurturing families;” with love being their most powerful resource.

Evelyn founded Gentry’s Educational Foundation to carry forward the legacy of her parents. The mission is to help children grow and thrive through the life-changing impact of 32 | MAY 2 026

education. Having been a kindergarten through fourth-grade teacher in Williamson County Schools and the Franklin Special School District, Evelyn was equipped with all of the passion and commitment to create change in this space.

Evelyn is a woman who says she is “inspired by her faith, her family, and the responsibility to be a good steward of the opportunities she has been given.” The sense of community in Franklin fuels her efforts, as well as her husband, Robert. Evelyn refers to Robert as her “rock,” and a well for “wisdom and spiritual guidance.”

The people of Franklin have become to Evelyn an “extended family” through the relationships she has built in friendships, colleagues and families served through Gentry’s.

Marianne SCHROER Marianne Schroer made Williamson County her home in 1982 and has caused tidal waves of change since her arrival. Her career, accomplished and meaningful, has impacted the community in a multitude of ways.

When Marianne arrived in Franklin, she immediately recognized the value of this community’s past and has done her part to preserve Franklin’s history - including serving on several community boards, including Franklin’s Charge, the African American Heritage Society, Carnton and The Heritage Foundation.

At the time of the merger between Carnton and the Carter House, Marianne was President of Carnton, playing a large role in the creation of the Battle of Franklin Trust (BOFT), where she was later President as well. During her time at the BOFT, she received the McGavock

Award, one of many awards she has received over the years.

Though technically retired, Marianne is still devoted to the community. After serving as Williamson County CASA’s executive director for seven years, Marianne continues her work for children experiencing trauma. She also serves on the Boards of Leadership Franklin, TMA Group, Toussaint L’Ouverture Cemetery and Tennessee CASA. Marianne has worn many hats throughout her life, building a career defined by dedication and meaningful impact. Yet for all she has accomplished professionally, the roles she holds closest are those of wife, mother, grandmother, daughter, sister and friend.

Ellen BOYER Since 2013, Ellen Boyer has graced Williamson County with her integrity, warmth and consistent kindness. She co-founded The Brett Boyer Foundation nine years ago with a mission to change and save lives. When Ellen lost her first child at seven months old due to a heart defect and Down Syndrome, she wanted to find a way to celebrate her daughter’s Down Syndrome and fund research into congenital heart defects that could save the lives of other children.

Ellen serves as the president of the foundation and has seen many lives saved, improved and extended; bringing hope to the one in one

hundred children born with CHD. Ellen and the Brett Boyer Foundation have now reached beyond Williamson County, extending their hearts to families around the country. For Ellen, knowing that a new family will receive a CHD diagnosis every fifteen minutes propels her to support the flow constantly.

Just as Ellen shows up for other families, she shows up for her own, making sure that her two children never miss out because of her hard work, but instead, learn from it. Ellen and her husband, Bo, encourage their children to find the joy and love in service of others; sharing their passion and continuing the mission.

Mary LANKFORD When a young Mary Lankford set out to pursue a career, she thought about what she loved and went from there. Mary is a people-person and has always found great meaning in building and maintaining strong connections. It was her enjoyment of working with people that drew her to banking, allowing the opportunity for her to help others make important financial decisions. Mary has worked in banking and mortgage lending for forty-five years in Franklin and Williamson County. Her focus has been lending and community relations; fostering relationships with local businesses, organizations and residents.

In her career at Liberty Bank, Mary says she transformed a “lackluster” division into one

of the bank's most profitable areas, all while keeping the team intact and fostering their growth. Mary, involved in many organizations in Williamson County, also spearheaded the Crocs for Troops campaign, sending almost 1,000 Crocs to Afghanistan to service members and women in the 1st Battalion of the 327th Infantry Regiment of the 101st Airborne Division.

Being involved in the community is of the utmost importance to Mary, including civic, professional and local initiatives. Alongside her community engagement, Mary’s personal life with friends and family is, as she says, her “greatest source of happiness,” and the source of her “balance, perspective and strong sense of purpose.”

This iconic family tradition was brought to Cool Springs in 2006 and is now celebrating twenty years here in Williamson County. At the heart of this legacy are owner Al Thomas and his late wife, Patricia Porter Thomas, who poured their heart and soul into building Sperry’s into what it is today. Their commitment to quality, hospitality and creating a place where guests feel genuinely cared for has shaped the experience for generations and continues to guide the brand forward.

I’ve been blessed to meet several people who became friends and family. They opened their hearts and welcomed me into their lives.

what does being part of this team for twenty years mean to you, and how would you describe sperry’s culture?

It makes me proud to be part of this family, because we truly are a family. Everyone works professionally and honestly, and that creates a culture where you feel safe and supported. what’s the biggest lesson the hospitality industry has taught you?

Always be humble and appreciate the people you are serving, and those serving alongside you. what motivates you to keep delivering exceptional service year after year?

The satisfaction of helping people enjoy quality time together, especially on special occasions. what does a perfect night at sperry’s look like from your perspective?

That’s hard to say. Our Prime Rib is a must, the crab cakes are exceptional and the grilled lamb chops are a favorite addition.

what’s the most surprising or memorable request you’ve ever gotten from a guest?

This month, we feature a woman who is a leader, a community supporter and an animal lover. Lisa Culp Taylor works tirelessly to help her clients find their dream home and leads the number one team at Onward Real Estate. When she is not working, she is traveling the world or spending time with her four rescue pets. We interviewed Lisa for our “I Am Williamson” spotlight to learn more about her story and her passion for Williamson County.

How long have you lived in Williamson County and what makes it feel like home to you?

I am a proud, lifelong Williamson County resident — this community is truly where my heart is. There's a warmth and sense of belonging here that's hard to find anywhere else. Watching it grow while still holding onto its charm and tight-knit spirit is something I never take for granted.

What led you to becoming a Realtor?

I became a REALTOR® in 1996 and am thrilled to be celebrating my thirtieth year in the business this year. Real estate is in my blood — my father was a REALTOR®, and watching him build relationships and help people find their place to call home planted a seed early on. It turned out to be the perfect fit, and I've never looked back.

Three words that best describe you.

Knowledgeable, caring and tenacious.

What do you like to do in your spare time?

When I'm not working, you'll likely find me curled up with a good book or planning my next travel adventure — though with a career

like mine, trips are a rare and cherished treat. But if I am gone long...I can't wait to get home to my two dogs and two cats, all of whom are rescues. My two cats were actually rescued from an empty lot in one of the communities we're currently selling in, which makes them extra special to me.

Where is your favorite place to go in Williamson County and why?

I love taking a stroll in downtown Franklin around sunset... it is the golden hour when things slow down, there are less people on the streets and the violinist is playing at the corner of 4th & Main. It is a special time. And then stop in to enjoy dinner or drinks at Cork & Cow, one of my favorite restaurants. It has the perfect atmosphere — warm, inviting and full of that downtown Franklin charm. Best of all, all of this is just a short walk from our downtown Franklin office.

What keeps you motivated and inspired?

My team is, without question, my greatest source of motivation. Since founding the LCT Team in 2017, watching our agents grow in their dedication to their clients and their craft never gets old. We've grown our team of REALTORS®, supported by an incredible

office staff of six that truly makes everything possible — and every milestone reminds me of why we do what we do.

What organization(s) are you involved with and why?

Snooty Giggles Dog Rescue holds a very special place in my heart. They focus on saving animals who are elderly or have faced health challenges in life — the kind of dogs that others might overlook — and I find that mission deeply meaningful. Both of my dogs came from Snooty Giggles, and supporting their efforts is something I plan to do indefinitely.

I truly believe it is "the greatest place on earth." It is home in every sense of the word and I am proud to spend my life here and my career helping families and clients buy and sell in this amazing, friendly and ever-growing community we all call home.

n Williamson County, history is not tucked away behind museum glass but living throughout the county. As we celebrate Preservation Month, communities across the country take time to recognize the importance of protecting the places that tell their stories. Franklin offers no shortage of examples. Through restoration efforts and a commitment to honoring its past while embracing growth, the city has preserved parts of its heritage that might otherwise have been lost to time. From landmarks to carefully restored spaces, these sites serve as reminders that preserving history is also a way to preserve community.

As Mary Pearce, the previous Executive Director of the Heritage Foundation of Franklin and Williamson County, so appropriately said,

john henry carothers house on huffines ridge

This one-and-a-half story limestone farmhouse was constructed by African American farmer John Henry Carothers in 1937 with the help of his son, Ezeal Carothers. John Henry Carothers was well known to locals for his craftsmanship, and the interior stone fireplace, as well as the exterior stone walls, are a testament to his talent. The limestone used to build the home was quarried from the property itself, somewhere on the twenty-six acres. After saving for twenty-six years, in 1933, John Henry purchased the land for twenty-five dollars per acre. The Carothers family farmed fourteen acres of the property, growing tobacco, wheat, hay and a kitchen garden. The house, standing 4 8 | MAY 2 026

“Historic Franklin did not happen by accident.” Historic preservation not only preserves the city’s stories but also serves as a major economic driver in Franklin. According to the Tennessee Department of Tourist Development, in 2024, historic preservation attracted 8.8 million visitors to Williamson County, spending $3.74 million per day. Preservation efforts have transformed Franklin into a nationally recognized heritage tourism destination, as well as a premier residential community. The Carothers House, American Legion Post 215 and the Merrill-Williams House are only a few examples of the deep-rooted African American history in this county, but they are prime examples of the preservation that can be accomplished and the rich history that is saved in the process.

as the centerpiece of the Carothers’ farm, exemplifies early twentieth-century Black landownership in the rural Jim Crow South, a time when many Black farmers didn’t own the land they worked. Ownership of the farm allowed the Carothers to participate in market agriculture on their own terms, as well as grow their own food.

The property witnessed Franklin’s growth throughout the twentieth century and, in 2019, was acquired by residential developers. The Carothers Family, in partnership with Goldberg Companies Inc., the city of Franklin, the African American Heritage Society of Williamson County, and Middle Tennessee State University’s Center for Historic Preservation,

all acted early to preserve the house and all the history it encapsulates.

Brooks Fleming Jr. American Legion Post 215 on 11th Avenue in Franklin was first founded in 1946, shortly after World War II, and later chartered to serve African American veterans during segregation. The namesake of Post 215, Brookes Fleming Jr., was one of the first Black soldiers killed in the war. When soldiers returned from overseas, white veterans were supplied with Legion Post 22, but due to segregation laws, black veterans were left without. The late Army SSgt. Williams F. Scruggs sought a place to gather and found the building on 11th. The building not only

In 1990, the post closed due to dwindling membership. For nine years, Post 215 was inactive. It was feared that, without action, the building would be lost. The “Limestone Five,” Donnell Lane, William Scruggs, brothers David and James Carothers and Harvey Chrisman began fundraising to give the post a new life. Currently, there are approximately sixty-five members, and it is still growing.

The Legion has become a very active part of the community and continues to support all veterans in Williamson County, preserving local veterans’ history and legacy.

On April 11, 1881, Moses Merrill purchased the lot where the MerrillWilliams house would later stand.

After Emancipation, freedmen began to purchase property in this area, including Moses Merrill, who had been in bondage for forty years. His former owner, Charles A. Merrill, a Nashville slave trader, had bequeathed land and a yearly stipend of $100 a quarter to Moses. Now known as the Natchez Street Historic District, the area became a thriving African American community and was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 2004. Moses eventually transferred his property to Thomas A. Williams, a local grocer and teacher. Thomas was

the son of the legendary A.N.C. Williams, a freedman and the first African American to own a business in Franklin.

Working in partnership with Middle Tennessee State University’s Center for Historic Preservation, the African American Heritage Society has since raised more than $1.2 million to restore and transform the home into an African American heritage center. The house, given new life, will honor the people who lived there and the surrounding Natchez community.

To complete funding for the MerrillWilliams House, the African American Heritage Society is asking for 150 donors to contribute a tax-deductible $1,000 to become a Friend of 264. Help preserve Franklin’s history by supporting 264 Natchez Street.

ourbon carries a special history with it. Whether it be the history of the bourbon itself or the history of time shared with the people you love, it is so much more than a simple drink.

In 2013, April Weller-Cantrell decided to acknowledge this truth and make it her career.

Known in the bourbon world as the Bourbon Baroness, April has established her spot in the bourbon industry and has even started a blog, In the Glass & Beyond, to share her knowledge.

Inspired by her late father, Frankie Weller, April decided to start her blog in February of 2026.

While she is just getting started on her blog, her knowledge runs deep. Being a Kentucky native with generational history in distilling, bourbon truly runs in her blood. She even spent a season in Williamson County at Leiper's Fork Distillery. Her blog serves as a platform for her to share two things she loves: history and bourbon. With a respect for tradition, April writes each blog to tell a story for the people who share the same passion.

While April’s blog focuses primarily on bourbon, we wanted to highlight a specific post for our Ladies Edition titled, “Not a Footnote: Women in the Architecture of American Whiskey”. In this post, April sets the record straight about when women entered the bourbon industry. She shares that “Women didn’t just show up to the bourbon party last week. We’ve been here since grain first met copper in the American colonies—when whiskey was coaxed from harvests in Pennsylvania, Maryland, Virginia and beyond. Long before visitor centers, tasting rooms or wax-dipped bottles, women were present.

Before Kentucky claimed it, before Tennessee refined it, before the label mattered more than the barrel, we were there in the fields, in the still yards, and in the ledgers where every bushel and barrel was counted. This month, I wanted to share something that has quickly become one of my favorite ways to gather Mahjong. If you’ve spent any time at Fork of the South lately, you may have seen the tiles, heard the laughter, or felt the energy around the table. It’s more than just a game… It’s an experience.

Mahjong has a way of bringing people together in a way that feels both nostalgic and new.

There’s a rhythm to it - the shuffle of the tiles, the sound of the racks, the quiet focus mixed with bursts of laughter. It invites you to slow down, be present and connect with the people sitting across from you.

What I love most is that you don’t have to be an expert to enjoy it. In fact, some of the most meaningful moments happen when you’re just learning - asking questions, figuring it out together and celebrating the little wins along the way. It’s the perfect blend of challenge and charm.

At Fork of the South, Mahjong has found its place within our Gathering space as another way to create connection. Through our Mahj House Social Club, we’ve seen friendships form, confidence grow and a true sense of community built around the table. And for

those just getting started, we’re so grateful to have Liza, our incredible teacher, who offers private lessons and has a way of making the game feel approachable, fun and something you’ll genuinely look forward to.

As we celebrate ladies this month, Mahjong becomes such a beautiful way to gather the women in your life - whether it’s mothers, daughters, friends or mentors. There’s something special about sitting around a table together, sharing stories, learning something new and simply enjoying the moment.

WHAT IS MAHJONG?

Mahjong is a tile-based game traditionally played with four players, rooted in Chinese culture and enjoyed around the world.

The version most commonly played here is American Mahjong, which uses a set of beautifully designed tiles and a yearly card that outlines winning hands.

At its heart, Mahjong is about building a complete hand by drawing and discarding tiles, with a mix of strategy, memory and just a little bit of luck. But more than that, it’s about the experience - the conversation around the table, the friendships that form and the joy of playing together.

It may look a little intimidating at first, but once you learn the flow, it quickly becomes something you look forward to again and again.

he term “lady” has many meanings worldwide, but it mainly refers to a girl or woman. The term began as early as the 1500’s from Ole English. “Our Lady” can refer to anyone from the Virgin Mary to Lady Diana Spencer, a formal title given to her when her father inherited his Earldom. Then there’s a “Lady of the Night,” referring to women involved in illicit activities, and there are many more. But for now, let’s focus on what it means to be a Southern Lady. Trust me, being a Southern Lady goes far

beyond hoop skirts and parasols. If you were lucky enough to be born in the south, many traits and traditions just naturally came to you, passed down from generations concerning habits, traits and manners. Winston Churchill once said, “The most beautiful voice in the world is that of an educated Southern woman.” And yet, do not be deceived, because as Allison Glock said, “Southern women can say more with a cut of their eyes than a whole debate club’s worth of speeches.”

what are some of the rules and protocols ever-present in a southern lady?

You never leave your house without lipstick and clean, “fixed” hair.

•

Unless you are invited, via text, email or formal invitation, you just don’t go to an event without an invitation.

•

Hats are always optional, but its connotation is much more than trying to keep the sun out of your eyes. They are a southern fashion statement, and the bigger the brim, the better.

•

She is always true to herself and can be known to make up her own rules. Totally acceptable.

•

She always has a cake or pie on the counter in a domed cake plate for company that may stop by, and don’t forget the sweet tea. A good host always makes company feel right at home.

•

We say "Yes, Sir" and "Yes, Ma’am" to our elders, showing respect and honoring them.

•

Southern women will always compare every man they date or marry to their Daddy, and take it from me, no one will ever treat them like their Daddy did.

•

Thank you notes are a must. Monogrammed with

your initials is the best, as we are big on putting our initials on everything. It is just plain rude not to write a personal note and send it within 24 hours after a dinner you attended, to someone who gave you a gift or someone who did a kind gesture just for you.

•

There is always an emergency casserole in the freezer; one never knows who will pass on at church or in the neighborhood, or who is just divorced.

•

Every respectable southern lady has a strand of pearls to pass down to daughters and granddaughters or nieces. Which reminds me, in the south, family is everything! You love them, respect them, and fight for them and most of all pray for them. They come before anyone or anything.

•

Weekends in the fall are for football. Enough said.

•

If you ever want to look like a camel in public, church, wedding or a funeral, just chew gum. If you are worried about your breath, carry small mints.

•

It is always acceptable to call someone Honey, Sweetie, Darlin’, Sugar or even Sweetheart, even when they are not kin to you.

So, slow down your speech, put some flowers on your table from the yard, or try your hand at making strawberry preserves, and you too can be a true Southern Lady!

RAISING Confident CHILDREN IN A Casual WORLD

T

here was a time when children were expected to look an adult in the eye, offer a firm handshake and carry on a polite conversation with ease. Today, many parents find themselves navigating a very different landscape - one that is faster, more casual and often centered around screens rather than face-to-face interaction. And yet, the desire has not changed.

Across Williamson County, parents still want their children to walk into a room with quiet confidence, to speak with clarity, to show respect and to feel comfortable not only among their peers but also with adults, teachers and future opportunities that will require them to present themselves well. The challenge is that these skills are no longer absorbed naturally. They must be taught - and just as importantly, practiced. Confidence is not something we can simply tell a child to have. It is built over time through experience. It grows when a child learns how to introduce themselves, how to carry a conversation, how to enter a room with composure and how to respond with poise in unfamiliar situations.

For example, a young student standing at the entrance of a room, pausing, stepping forward, offering a handshake and saying, “Good evening, my name is James,” may seem like a small moment. But in that moment, something important is taking place. The child is learning how to move through the world with confidence. And just as importantly, others begin to respond to that child differently.

These moments, though simple, shape how a child sees themselves - and how others see them. In a world that has become increasingly informal, children 62 | MAY 2 026

who develop these skills stand out in meaningful ways. Not because they are different for the sake of being different, but because they are prepared. They are comfortable engaging with others. They know how to listen as well as speak.

They understand the value of respect - not as a rule, but as a way of relating to the world around them.

For many families, creating opportunities for this kind of growth requires intention. It may look like encouraging more face-to-face interaction, setting expectations at the dinner table or guiding children through social situations rather than stepping in for them. It may also mean placing them in environments where these skills are taught in a structured and encouraging way, and where children are given the opportunity to practice alongside their peers.

In our community, many families are turning to programs designed specifically to teach these foundational skills at an early age. PreCotillion, offered locally for elementary-aged students, introduces manners, conversation and respectful behavior in a setting that is both structured and welcoming. As students grow, opportunities such as Junior Cotillion build upon these foundations, helping them develop greater confidence, social awareness and ease

in more formal settings.

Through guided instruction and interactive practice, students gain more than knowledge; they begin to carry themselves differently. They become more comfortable in social settings, more confident in conversation and more aware of how their actions impact others. Even something as simple as gathering around a table—whether for a family meal or a shared tea —can become a meaningful opportunity for growth. In these moments, children begin to understand conversation, attentiveness and the subtle rhythms of social interaction that cannot be replicated through a screen. These experiences, though they may seem small at the time, have a lasting impact. A child who learns to engage confidently today becomes a young adult who can navigate interviews, leadership roles and new environments with ease. They carry themselves with a quiet assurance. They are more at ease in unfamiliar situations. And perhaps most importantly, they are better equipped to build genuine, lasting connections.

In the end, confidence is not about perfection.

It is not about saying everything exactly right.

It is about giving children the tools to feel comfortable being themselves, while also understanding how to show consideration and respect for others. In a culture that continues to move quickly and casually, these qualities are becoming increasingly rare. And because of that, they have never been more valuable.

trength is most usually celebrated in young women when it looks graceful - when it sticks the landing in gymnastics, wins the tournament in soccer or breaks a record in track.

However, there is another side to a young girl’s strength – a side that is loud, bruising and unapologetically physical. For that side, there’s Rugby.

At Tennessee Lady Raptors practice, a girls' Rugby team based in Williamson County, hesitation is not an option. The players sprint across the field, collide in tackles and get back up with grass-stained knees. Rugby is one of the most physically demanding and fastestgrowing sports in the world. For the girls, the Lady Raptors have become far more than just a team, and they’re struggling to stay alive.

The Lady Raptors, founded in 2006, are facing a challenge that has nothing to do with on-field performance: their numbers are dwindling.

In recent years, participation has declined, leaving the program's future uncertain. Without new players joining the roster, the team could disappear altogether. For current players, that possibility feels deeply

critical and personal. For many of them, Rugby offered something that they struggled to find elsewhere. Some came from traditional sports and were drawn to Rugby’s intensity, and others had never played a contact sport in their life. As Coach Boone said while watching his team warm up for practice, “Rugby is for anyone and everyone – all different shapes, sizes and backgrounds.” The sport has a wide range of needs in terms of players, and because of this, it is exceedingly inclusive. On a Rugby pitch, or field, there is little room for self-consciousness. Players must learn to trust their bodies, trust their teammates and trust themselves enough to charge forward.

The lessons Rugby offers can be transformative for young women. Girls are often taught to make themselves smaller physically, emotionally and socially. Rugby asks for something entirely different. It rewards aggression and fearlessness and teaches girls that taking up space is not something to apologize for. Despite the sport's rough reputation, Rugby fosters a remarkable sense of community. Teammates rely on one another in a way that creates deep trust on and off the field. For many of the Lady Raptors, that bond has become one of the most meaningful parts of the experience, and that is exactly why the team’s fight to survive matters.

At a time when women’s sports are gaining long-overdue visibility, smaller programs like the Tennessee Raptors remind us that growth does not happen automatically. It requires young girls to be willing to try something unfamiliar, and parents to be willing to let them. The Raptors are actively recruiting new players in hopes of preserving the team for future athletes who may be searching for the same confidence and strength that the current players found through the sport. As Talulah “Lu” Stinson, says, they are looking for girls who want to try something new, and in terms of experience, they are happy to take anyone who “hasn’t even seen a game before.” The team, as well as Coach Boone, is incredibly patient with their learners and simply glad to share the joy of the sport with newcomers. As Lu said, plain and simple, “we just want people.”

The Lady Raptor’s message is straightforward: come out and try Rugby. You may leave with a bruise, and you will certainly leave exhausted, but you may also leave realizing that you are far tougher than you ever imagined. For these girls, that realization is worth fighting for.

Summertime Safety TIPS FOR YOUR KID'S SAFET Y THIS SUMMER

hen that final bell rings, summer begins in an instant. For our kids, that means total freedom – goodbye to homework and hello to a long stretch of unstructured, carefree days ahead. For parents, summertime looks slightly different: more time outdoors, less routine and a greater need to stay mindful of everyday safety. With just a little preparation, summer can stay free and easy – all the fun with a dose of healthy precaution on the side.

BUGS, BUGS, BUGS

Warmer weather brings more time in nature, and with that, more exposure to bugs. Use child-safe insect repellent and check for ticks after playing in wooded or grassy areas. More than just itchy and annoying, ticks can pose a major risk to children's health, as they can transmit diseases. It's best to avoid tall grass and underbrush.

WATER SAFETY

The most important part of your kid's water play is your supervision. When your children are swimming, designate rotating "water watchers," or someone whose sole responsibility it is to keep a close eye on the swimmers for ten minutes, and then switch. Make sure you build your child's water confidence while remaining close by.

When preparing for a day at the beach, reduce risk by putting your kids in their brightest color of swimsuit - underwater visibility can make a huge difference in a bad situation.

HYDRATION CHECK

Hydration is key to a hot summer day, and with so much going on, it can be hard to remember.

This one may seem obvious, but it doesn't make it any less meaningful. Offer your kids water every twenty to thirty minutes during play, using a fun

reusable water bottle to pique their interest.

Snacks like watermelon, cucumbers or berries are water-rich and can aid in hydration throughout the day. Children between the ages of four and eight should aim for about five cups of water a day, and children between nine and thirteen should aim for about eight cups a day.

SUN BLOCK

We can all remember the mother-enforced time spent waiting poolside for sunscreen to dry. Broad-spectrum, SPF thirty-plus sunscreen should be applied fifteen to thirty minutes before sweating or swimming and should be reapplied at least every two hours. For a kid on the move, a sunscreen stick can be the best mess-free application.

Summertime brings more travel into our life's equation. Staying safe on wheels is of the utmost importance. This summer, when your kid is ready to take off on their bicycle, ensure that they have a CPSC-certified helmet. A well-fitting, age-appropriate helmet can help protect your child from a serious brain or head injury. Also, when it comes to your car, never, ever leave your kids unattended in the vehicle.

Not even for a quick minute.

Keep your cars locked even when you're not on the move to avoid children climbing into the vehicle unattended.

The Nocturnes series, drawing inspiration from the night, is seductively dark. Almost closing the gap between the female figure and Mother Earth, the forms reveal themselves as what LaMonte refers to as “figurations of dusk.” The penumbral women have an inherent

& sensuality that emanates from their form, emphasizing both a fragile softness and an unbreakable strength. A paradox of weight and weightlessness, LaMonte’s work is a ravishing exploration of women.

Placed within the historic interiors of the Cheekwood Mansion, these works blur the boundary between interior and exterior, offering moments of wonder and reflection amid the architectural setting, and recalling the natural beauty of the botanical gardens outdoors.

Cheekwood’s INTERVENTIONS program, made possible by the generous support of the Sandra Schatten Foundation, brings nationally and internationally acclaimed artists to Nashville to activate the Historic Mansion’s storied interiors.

tudio Tenn presents their annual fundraising gala, “One Night Only,” at The Factory at Franklin on Saturday, June 27th. The highly anticipated evening is a celebration of community and the power of live theatre. All in line with the special theme of “Summer Starlight Serenade”, the magical night will consist of a cocktail hour, a seated dinner and, of course, unforgettable performances. “One Night Only” brings together theatre lovers and champions of the arts to fuel Studio Tenn’s mission and propel the company into the upcoming season of shows.

This signature fundraiser allows Studio Tenn to continue producing Broadway-caliber work right here in Franklin.

This year’s fundraiser is co-chaired by community leaders Matt and Julie Brown, longtime Studio Tenn patrons and devoted supporters. Matt and Julie are both deeply engaged in philanthropic endeavors across Franklin. Matt, brand strategist and entrepreneur, serves as Franklin’s Ward 2 alderman. Julie is an experienced educator and

steadfast nonprofit advocate. Together, the two own and operate the Five Points Post Office and General Store in downtown Franklin.

When Matt and Julie decided to put down some roots, Franklin felt like home. Not long after arriving, the two went out for a night of theatre at Studio Tenn. Little did they know, this was the start of a deep connection and newfound admiration. As Matt says, “supporting the arts, serving local nonprofits, and helping Franklin flourish together is one of [their] greatest joys.”

The level of talent at Studio Tenn blew the Browns away, and, as Julie remarked, “the heart and intention” behind the show captured something special. The sense of community at Studio Tenn drew the couple in and inspired them to give back.

For those wanting to get involved in Studio Tenn, there are a multitude of reasons and very few barriers – the “One Night Only” event is the perfect opportunity to take part in the magic. Live theatre, as Matt says, is “vital” to this community. Julie agrees, saying,

theatre’s ability to “bring people together, enrich everyday life, and create a sense of vibrancy that benefits everyone” is unmatched.

Julie remarked that Studio Tenn is “a gift to this community”, and once you see a show for yourself, you’ll “want to come back again and again.” Great theatre takes time, talent and resources, and the reward for playing a small part is enormous. “One Night Only” offers the opportunity to give back to a theatre that has done so much for Franklin – and as Matt and Julie agree, “guests can expect an unforgettable evening that feels more like an experience than a traditional fundraiser.”

onnie, facing retirement, prepared to sell her business to welcome a life of travel and idle relaxation.

After losing her longtime companion in early 2023, she never imagined she would marry again, but fate had other plans. A friend approached Connie about someone she wanted to introduce her to: Wayne. Wayne, who had also lost his partner in 2023, was smitten with Connie immediately. The two fell for each other and found that they were meant to be. After a year of dating, they decided to get married, opening a brand-new chapter in their lives.

as a poet and Wayne’s technical expertise, decided to begin writing songs together with the help of a software called Suno.

Connie is something of a jack-of-all-trades: a retired financial analyst, interior designer and poet. Wayne, similarly, is a retired Information Architect from IBM who has always had a passion for music. A twist of fate opened new doors, pointing them towards their creativity.

Every single song of Connie and Wayne’s tells a story, with inspiration and meaning behind each one. A song for a young girl named Marley, “Marley’s Twirl,” has a sweet, nostalgic sound that describes a child's first steps into life and all its wonders. Another song, “Dad’s Old Truck,” introduces an old

Connie’s lyrical poetry, alongside Wayne’s information architecture mind, paired to create what the two of them deem “creative synergy.” Connie and Wayne’s partnership stretched beyond the everyday into musical collaboration, and the responses from friends and family assured them that they were on the right path.

Chevy that holds hours of memories. A song not too dissimilar from Connie and Wayne’s own story, “God Was Writing Their Story,” details two people finding love later in life and rediscovering what it means to feel.

o Susan Truex, art can be articulated very simply: Art is “the breath [she] breathes.”

Susan has been a professional painter for thirty-two years and continues to evolve in her artistry. As she says, she sees her work as a “vehicle to explore the human condition and emotional connections,” always allowing for a natural evolution in the process of her paintings. Susan says that her paintings “[have their] own ideas about how [they] should develop” and empowering them to lead helps her find their message. Susan’s use of women, animals, birds and children in her work allows for, as she says, “a soft delivery of more sobering issues”, enabling the painting to speak for itself and the viewers to interpret for themselves.

Susan began drawing and painting at an early age, taking the liberty to explore form and color.

In her early training, Susan practiced plein air painting, the action of painting landscapes directly outdoors to capture the fleeting

moments, the light, atmosphere and color of the day. The discipline and urgency involved taught Susan to uncover the essence of the work, which is the place from which she begins a piece.

Painting, as Susan says, “using both realism and abstraction is what dissolves the boundaries between what we see and what we imagine,” finding depth in the liminal and meaning in the details. Her two-dimensional stories, she hopes, will offer the viewer “something to think about, something to positively respond to.”

For Susan, painting, in a way, takes on the characteristics of language, and she sees her work as “the powerful voice of a quiet woman.”
