NEW YEAR, NEW BEGINNINGS

Dear Readers, And so a new year has begun and as we begin our February and find out this week what Phil sees for our weather future – I hope that everyone has managed to keep a few resolutions this month or has seen a productive and healthy start to their 2013. Here at YOUR Williamson we have enjoyed a long break and are excited to be back at it and to publish this, our 2nd Annual Williamson County Bridal Guide. As a recent bride myself, it was so much fun to work with so many wonderful local vendors as well as hear about the other 2012 brides and their beautiful love stories. A perfect kickoff to the month of love – February. I hope your Valentine; whether it be a friend, a love, a family member or even as we show in this month’s “In the Click,” of a more furry variety. But to love and be loved is the greatest gift of all and it makes this particular holiday so very worth celebrating. It’s also Heart Month and if you do not already – pay attention to your ticker! Make sure if you have a history of heart disease in your family or even if you don’t, especially ladies, please take heed of the great information inside provided by the American Heart Association for ways to get in the know about your HEART and live a longer, healthier life. There are tons of events on the horizon and we look forward to seeing you this winter. Stay warm and make this new year count!

At press time, we were saddened to learn of the death of a Williamson County beloved citizen – Mr. Ed Moody. For so many of you in the community, in so many different circles, his loss is truly felt and he will be missed beyond measure. Whether it was in church, as a member of the Franklin Noon Rotary Club, at Moody’s Tires or his near perfect attendance with his wife Eileen at the Heritage Ball – there are few who met him who wouldn’t have shared the opinion that he was a profoundly dear and noble gentleman. His firm handshake, his kind eyes and his always welcoming smile will be remembered forever. His character should be emulated and honored – there are few like him – there will be none who can fill his shoes. Farewell Mr. Moody – dear friend and community legend.

Make Room for More Space!

by Chris Carlisle Make a New Year’s resolution to create a more spacious environment!

You can do this by de-cluttering and re-organizing your favorite rooms.

Revitalize and freshen up the look of any room by removing the extra accessories and collectables that have accumulated over the years. You may have decorative items just randomly lying around. You probably have little piles of items, or big piles of items you wish would go away. We all know it’s easy to let stacks of magazines, newspapers and books pile up in corners, when they could be thrown away, boxed up for storage, donated or just placed in a bookshelf.

Once you’ve de-cluttered, analyze your room and envision how you would like the space to look. If it feels crowded, consider taking a piece of artwork off the wall. It’s always a good idea to not cover every wall with a piece of art.

Leaving a wall or two blank creates more interest and opens up the room. Keep in mind that dark colors make a room appear smaller and lighter, brighter colors make a room feel larger. Sometimes strategically placing a mirror will make a room appear larger as well.

Another technique to help create the feeling of more space is to re-think how you’ve organized your accessories. It’s a good idea to group accessories, rather than placing them around with no rhyme or reason. One way to organize is to use a tray. Place a group of your favorite items on a tray, being careful to leave open space on it. This is important. In other words don’t cover the whole tray with items.

My favorite rule of thumb is to always group an odd number of items.

For example group three items together or five items together. It’s also aesthetically pleasing to just place one grand item by itself in an area, as a focal point in your room.

Keeping your accessories in balance is much more pleasing to the eye. The use of symmetry is a perfect way to do this. For example, if you have a mantle above a fireplace, use a pair of matching items placing one on each end of the mantle, The items should be identical or just similar in size. Another use of symmetry on a wall could be to hang art or sculpture on the right and left sides of a larger piece of art, being careful to make sure the space between is exactly the 12

same on both sides. You will want to use a tape measure for this. It’s pleasing to look at a wall or an area when everything is in alignment and even on both sides.

Another common practice to create symmetry is decorating with a pair of lamps.

Just flank a sofa with a lamp on the right and left side evenly on end tables. It’s best if the tables are the same height or very close to the same height to maximize the visual effect.

What’s most important is to have fun and use accessories that make you happy when you look at them! January 2013 is a great time to make room for the new year ahead!

Black Tie Affair THE AFRICAN AMERICAN HERITAGE SOCIETY PRESERVING OUR COMMUNITY’S BLACK HISTORY WITH COMMEMORATIVE AWARDS AND EVENTS IN FEBRUARY

T

The African American Heritage Society’s 12th Annual Black Tie Affair will be held on Friday, February 1st, 2013 at 7:00 p.m. at the Embassy Suites in Cool Springs. The organization is pleased to announce American Idol Finalist Melinda Doolittle is serving as its honorary chairperson for this exciting event. Melinda is a proud resident of Williamson County and will be leading the black national anthem “Lift Every Voice and Sing” and the audience will have the opportunity to sing along with Melinda. This annual event supports the McLemore House Museum; home of former slave Harvey McLemore, who built the home as a free man and which is listed on the National Register of Historical Places. The event also supports the Society, whose mission is to chronicle the lives and contributions African Americans have made in our community. The theme for this event is the “History of African American Churches in Williamson County.” Awards and certificates will be given out to 31 churches that are still active and that were established by African Americans. The oldest church is First Franklin Primitive Baptist Church in the Historic Hard Bargain neighborhood, which was established in 1865 and the oldest church Association is Lynn Creek, located on Fairground Street and was organized in 1872. The pioneer family being honored this year are the descendants of the Perkins Jordan family who was born in 1848 and died in 1814. He was an ex slave who became a successful free man and Williamson County Courthouse records show that at the time of his death, he owned two hundred thirty acres of land.

He provided well for his family and a portion of his farm on Owl Hollow Road still remains in the ownership of his descendants.

musical talent scattered among local African-American young school children of many years ago, would perhaps never have surfaced had it not been for concerned individuals like Professor T. J. Myers. He would eventually become famous locally launching a successful annual talent show at the Franklin Training School. The school where he taught was located on Natchez Street. His shows were known by many local people as “Procks” Amateur Shows. His shows consisted of such acts as: womanless weddings, singers, dancers, pantomimes, “lip syncs” and dramatic readings. His selection of acts during the earlier years of the 1930’s and 1940’s was sometimes quite humorous.

The Proc Amateur Show resurfaced this year as the pre-Black Tie Event sponsored by the African American Heritage Society held on January 19th.

There were various acts and performances throughout the evening just as was the case with Professor Myers’s show. One former student of Professor Myers who remembered his earlier extracurricular talent shows was Mrs. Louise Beal Patton, a 1934 graduate of Franklin Training School. She recalled: “Mr. Myers was an interesting person. He would have talent shows every year and people would come from Columbia and Nashville. They just liked the variety, the way he would conduct it, almost like Ed Sullivan, only he talked more and he would say if he didn’t have enough people on the program, he’d say, Boy, come on up here and sing.” And then you would say, “Mr. Myers, I can’t sing.” And he would say, “Yes….you can sing. You can do that. And then you would.” T. J. Myers talent show was a prime example of good, clean fun. In an era of segregation and radio broadcasts, it was these types of events that sustained the community and the social life of Franklin’s African American community children.

WEDDING PLANNING TIPS You just got engaged, congratulations!! What do you do now?

Buy a bridal magazine with no shame and flash that engagement ring! Take a moment and just enjoy the bliss that comes with being in love with the person you have decided to spend the rest of your life with!

Now on to the good stuff - planning your wedding! One of the first steps to planning is to figure out what you want.

Close your eyes and envision your wedding, picture yourself walking down the aisle. Is it outdoors or in? Light or dark?

Sunlight or candlelight? Church or no church? What do you hear? String quartet, guitar or maybe an organ? Is it just your close friends and family or everyone you know on that special day in your life? Do the same with your reception. You and your fiancé are being announced as Mr. and Mrs. and walking into the reception. What do you see? Is there a band playing jazz music or a DJ bumping Jay Z? Is it in a hotel ballroom, outside under a tent or maybe somewhere unique like the Dyer Observatory that offers a telescope to see the stars? Now that you have a vision of your wedding day, let’s get realistic and talk about budget. If you have generous parents or other family that have offered to help you pay for your wedding, find out how much you have to work with so you can create a budget. There are two ways to do that: the more traditional way is by percentages (50% for the reception, 10% on the dress and veil, 10 % on music, etc). This works well if you are flexible on the venue and other vendors. But if you have a specific venue or other vendor in mind, list your priorities most important to least important. This way you identify your must-have’s and your can-live-without’s and spend your budget accordingly!

When looking at venues, make sure you’re comparing apples to apples. Some venues include tables, chairs and set up and are more expensive than other venues that don’t’ include anything.

But if you subtract the price of renting tables and chairs and paying for set up from the more expensive venue, is it still more expensive? If our brides are trying to decide between a couple of different venues, we create wedding estimates that break down how much everything will cost in each scenario so you can really compare them. Another thing to consider with the venue - weddings at home or a friend’s home, while beautiful and special, can be more stressful and more expensive than you think. Just like “Fronk” in Father of the Bride, we love a wedding at home.

But professional venues are set up to handle events with a couple hundred people, your home usually isn’t. Bathrooms: enough said! Okay one more comment

on restrooms: porta-potties stink in more ways than one.

Restroom trailers are AWESOME, air-conditioned, flushing toilets, real sinks - but are expensive. Make sure you have room in your budget! Electricity: lighting companies usually require two separate circuits and the band will need a circuit for their equipment. Space: is there a rain plan?

Stress – I think George from Father of the Bride says it all, “ Having a bunch of people tramping in and out of your home is stressful!” We’re not trying to talk you out of it, we just want you to be prepared. Plan your budget well and definitely hire a wedding planner!

PAPER GOODS Invitations set the tone for your wedding. When your guests open that envelope, think about what you want them to see; a casual invite on craft paper with a fun font? Heavy-weight ecru paper with elaborate cursive? What will express your theme and vision? Also, people are notoriously bad about rsvp cards – for whatever reason, they just don’t think it’s that important. So just know that you will probably need to call your guests to find out if they will attend! And if you are having a small wedding, you may not need response cards. Small weddings usually consist of people you see all the time so you’ll know if they’re coming or not! Programs are something you can usually do without to save a little money (as long as you’re not having a complicated ceremony that people can’t follow on their own). If you do have programs, don’t be afraid to mix it up and do something different. We love the he/she fan where you and your fiancé write fun facts about each other and print his facts on one side and her facts on the other. It’s a great conversation starter!

FOOD AND DRINK The bar. If you choose to have alcohol at your wedding, the bar will probably be the most popular area! Offering beer and wine can be a great way to save money and ensure guests don’t get too sloppy! And most people that like mixed drinks will drink wine. Have a signature drink that you like and it doesn’t have to be something pink and girly. How about a margarita machine? Or go to a mixologist and have them create a drink for you based on your preferences!

RANDOM LITTLE NOTES Cakes and desserts – ask your baker to provide cake boxes so you can send your guests home with a piece of cake. We hate throwing out cake the bride paid for!

Thank you notes are a must! They are the ONLY rule we have with weddings.

5 Myths of Working With a Wedding Planner 1. Too Expensive! Wedding planners cost too much, right? Well, that’s a topic for discussion. Yes, adding a couple thousand dollars to your wedding budget seems daunting when it’s already stretched to it’s limits. BUT a lot of wedding planners can save you money through discounts they have with vendors. AND the stress planners take off the bride and her family is worth quite a bit, especially as you get closer to the wedding day. Also, when you’re spending $10,000 to $20,0000 or more on something (especially something as personal and special as your wedding), don’t you want to have an advisor and an expert on your side making sure you’re getting the most bang for your buck? Working with the best vendors, getting inside tips, etiquette questions and figuring out what you really need and don’t need are just a few of the perks of working with a wedding planner!

2. They take over my day! Notice I said working “with” a wedding planner, because that’s exactly what we do. We work with you to make your wedding everything you want it to be. We do NOT take it over (unless you want us to ☺)! A wedding planner is there to help you, whatever that means.

You’re a DIY girl and love being in charge? Great! Who understands that better than a wedding planner who is used to be in charge? We’ll be there to support you, help you make those calls, answer those emails and direct the wedding day so you can be the bride. Or maybe you enjoy SOME aspects of planning, the photographer and the cake are most important to you. Lovely! You do that and we’ll do the rest! A good wedding planner only does what the bride wants her to do; our goal is your happiness!

3. I don’t need help!

Obviously you are an amazing person, you’re reading YOUR Williamson, aren’t you? Look, hiring a wedding planner is not a sign of weakness, it means you want to enjoy your engagement and wedding day, and not be consumed with stress! You are hiring a professional to do a job for you. You go to a doctor when you’re sick, you hire a real estate agent to buy a house, why wouldn’t you hire a professional wedding planner to help you through this once in a lifetime experience?! Not to mention the amount of time it takes to plan a wedding. Most brides have a full-time job and struggle to find the time to research vendors and décor ideas, email venues to set up appointments and all the million other details. We can do the initial research, set up the appointments, then you meet with the vendor and make the decision on whom to hire. We help you make the most of your time and money!

4. My venue offers a day-of coordinator! Yes, a venue that offers a day-of wedding coordinator is very helpful. But the difference in a planner/coordinator at a venue and an outside planner is their focus. The venue’s planner is focused on the venue they work for and protecting it. An outside planner that works for you is focused on you! We fill in the gaps between all the other vendors to make sure your wedding is flawless! Yes, your vendors can take care of their respective jobs and manage themselves, but a wedding planner helps coordinate and communicate between vendors resulting in a smoothly run wedding. The wedding planner is usually the first to arrive and the last to leave. We make sure that everything is exactly how you want it, that all your gifts and decor are safe and sound with you or a trusted person at the end of the night, and that your bridesmaids aren’t stuck cleaning up! We are there for you and on YOUR side, from start to finish!

5. I don’t want a stranger butting in on my wedding day!

I can confidently say that you and your wedding planner will not be strangers by the time your wedding day comes around! With as much time as you spend with your planner, you usually become good friends. That being said, it’s very important that you work with a planner you like and feel comfortable with. I always say that your relationship with your wedding planner is like your relationship with your doctor: you should be able to be completely honest with no fear of judgment or having to explain yourself. Before deciding on a wedding planner, meet with them for coffee or dinner and get to know them like you would any vendor!

In our humble opinion, working with a wedding planner can be the difference between enjoying your wedding and just getting through it!

As we roll into 2013 with a brave new attitude and innovative ideas, the chef and I have been pleased to see brides becoming more adventurous and innovative in terms of their culinary choices – both at their rehearsal dinners and wedding receptions.

We’ve worked with many brides in all sorts of wedding settings and have had the pleasure of creating some amazing chef ’s tables, interactive stations and yes, even the strawberry injection bar. We’ve had fun working in special elements that feature the couple and their stories, and receptions have never been more delicious.

For those on the cusp of wedded bliss, we have some tips that may help; taken from our own journey through many different styles of weddings: from short and sweet to extravagant and circus-like, we’ve seen it all…and want to share what has worked best and what trends and culinary features we’re seeing at the head table these days.

Down with ‘wedding food’! It’s time to up the ante! A good portion of the wedding budget should be catering and venue-you have a fab location and great food? Everything else falls into place-and the guests are happy.

We know it’s your big day, so please be sure you select items that you actually like. Remember, you can’t please everyone. Especially Aunt Edna. We have a wedding coming up with a full Pikes Market in Seattle set up with ice and raw oysters because that’s what the bride and groom love! They hope guests will take advantage and step outside their comfort zone, but if they don’t, more for the bride and groom!

If you have more than 50 guests, and are doing a buffet style dinner, have your wedding planner or DJ ‘release’ a few tables at a time. This is such an easy fix for an ugly problem: long lines that resemble a cattle call at the trough. Your table will go first, and other immediate family and friends, and from there tables are released one or two at a time.

We have seen DJ’s play games with the crowd, like trivia about the bride and groom, and the first table with a correct answer gets to go next. Sounds crazy, but every time we have seen it done it has been a welcome change from just standing in line waiting for food.

Another great way to break up a long line of hungry guests is to offer mini stations and let people visit them at their leisure. This usually gives guests more freedom and they feel less ushered around, creating a comfortable and sometimes whimsical air about the reception.

We have done stations from interactive pasta stations to dessert bars and the guests love picking what they want when they want it. We suggest using smaller plates and having them available at each station. After all, it isn’t a race, and most receptions have food out for at least two hours if not more.

The chef and I often have a party group who indulges and is feeling no pain hours into the reception, the food has been eaten and the Chef’s tables cleared, but you will often have a couple of members of the wedding party or that crazy fun uncle peeking into the kitchen to find some leftovers.

We have been offering a menu item ‘for the road’ or at least for that last round of dancing to soak up the alcohol. Anything from ‘grown up grilled cheese’ (mini panini is with torched Havarti cheese) to the ‘Elvis is leaving the building’ (Nutella and banana on artisan bread) has been a hit. These items are usually passed, and guests fall in love with us all over again when we bring them that tasty surprise towards the end of the party.

Try these tips and people will leave your event raving about the culinary experience. You want people to feel like they just experienced something different, amazing, and delicious. Wedding food is reborn in 2013!

A few specific ideas that The Chef and I would like to share…. consider it our wedding gift to you: Interactive smoked meat taco bar: Want to have a Cinco de Mayo wedding

reception? Push past the nachos and get involved! Try offering grilled wild mushrooms if you have any vegetarians and include some unexpected items like candied red peppers.

Beignet Bar: A theme that has been trending lately is French Quarter type fare, and we have done several beignet bars as of late. The chef has a team who makes them fresh right there, and he offers much more than powdered sugar. Try chocolate sauce, smashed strawberry or raspberry compote and drizzles of caramel to take this New Orleans treat to the next level. Hint: the beignet bar is another great end of the event addition, or something to start after the cake has been cut. Some couples just cut a small cake for tradition’s sake, and then use the beignet bar as their main dessert.

Crostini Bar: This station is often a hit during cocktail hour, perfect for snacking

on before the main meal. If a plated dinner is chosen for a more formal option, this is a great start to let guests mingle before taking their seat for the evening. Chef Chris Rains loves to make his own crostini, seared on one side in olive oil so they are a perfect texture and consistency. They make a perfect palate for olive tapenades, homemade jams, local spun honey, goat cheese or a nice hand whipped smoked Gouda spread, and many other fun options. Having a chef man the crostini bar is fun as well because they can make suggestions on combinations and answer guests’ questions about certain items.

Whatever your fancy and whichever route you choose to take for your reception, don’t be afraid to step out of the box. Forget long lines, hotel pans and the same old carving o’ meat! Demand something different and amazing! It is your day, and remember, life is short. It might as well be delicious.

FIRST LOOK In our first look, Marshall wears the classic black tux in a modern slim fit, with bow tie and cumber-bun. This look has graced the aisles for many years and will never go out of style for men. It is a year round trend that can be versatile for both day and evening weddings. Caitlyn shows off a very formal look with a Casablanca ruched, ivory satin, sweetheart neckline, mermaid shaped gown. The bodice is accented with a Swarovski Crystals, pearls and a rhinestonebeaded appliqué. Her ivory birdcage veil creates a more modern twist. I’m having a “vintage wedding.” We hear that daily at Southern Events Party Rental, and we happen to know a thing or two about just what that means.

The word “vintage” means something different for nearly every bride. The real character of your vintage wedding actually comes in the key word you place AFTER vintage. Is your style “vintage-chic,” “vintage-glam,” or “vintage-farm?”

In the Nashville area, vintage trends especially seemed to take over in 2010 and, while evolving, haven’t surrendered a bit. We started with shabby-styled furniture which is always beautiful in its own respect. What Southern bride doesn’t love a nod to the charm of the past, especially when it comes in the form of a worn, yet intricate, and inviting love-seat for bridal portraits? “Shabby-chic” lounges with an array of neutral-toned chairs, couches and side tables are a beautiful way to wow your guests and create an at-home feel within the space of your choosing.

And what other way can you make guests feel at home? Invite them to sit at a gorgeous wooden farm table and serve them fried chicken on heirloom mix-match plates that look like they just came from your grandma’s china cabinet.

The term soul mate fits aptly for Johnny and myself. Ours is a story not so very long in reality but for us a life’s journey of perseverance and faith that led us finally, to stand before our friends and family to become man and wife last September. If overcoming adversity makes you stronger then our love and commitment to one another, though tested, cannot be broken. And the day we planned on which to celebrate that commitment, was meant to be all about true love and what matters most to us. Family and friends were at the forefront of that plan and despite the fact we were going for less is more, we decided to go with it when we found ourselves with 16 plus attendants to stand up with us. Our oldest and dearest friends, my sister Anna, Johnny’s and now my son Bo and my nephew Lane, Johnny’s cousins Craig and Dustin along with Heather, Kary, Natalie, Jessica, Erin, Mary Kate, Ginger, Kelsy, Tom, Chuck, Ron, Greg and Keith. Without these individuals’ love and support throughout our lifetimes, we could not have found our way to that place. Johnny’s cousin and assistant minister at Franklin United Methodist Church, Vona Wilson, performed our ceremony filled with special touches and moments we knew we would cherish a lifetime. Our ceremony took place in the foyer of Magnolia Hall, a beautiful antebellum home in downtown Franklin I have loved since I was a child, Never imagining I would

one day be a bride there. Thanks to Mrs. Inman, the gracious owner, Johnny, our bridal party and 100 or so special guests, had the privilege of stepping back in time in this lovely place, for our wedding. The reception was held on the grounds and was a picture perfect evening complete with stars and a full moon. Hydrangeas and roses filled miscellaneous pots, urns and vases on every long table. Mercury glass votives and burlap accents made this a truly shabby chic event. Guests were served a fabulous BBQ supper complete with the groom’s special sauce tasting table and enjoyed a cigar bar set up on one of the home’s many porches. The Ron Shuff Band, a Franklin and Robertson family favorite, entertained for the evening with plenty of old school dancing and lots of boogie music too! Cutting the cake was followed by the groom’s toast to the guests and to me, his new bride. One of those moments in life never to be forgotten. It was a magical night that had so many moments to cherish. We left for home in a veil of sparklers and love and we intend to make that last for a lifetime to come. We count among our blessings in life to be the owners of YOUR Williamson and Robertson Media Group and we gratefully reside here in Franklin. We are happy to announce we are expecting our first child together this summer. I could go on forever remembering and thanking so many people who made our days so special. So we simply say thank you as we look forward to a life of happiness surrounded by all of you as continued blessings in our world.

Amy & Tim March 30, 2012

Tim and Amy gathered with their children, Benjamin and Chloe, for a Hawaiian wedding ceremony the afternoon of March 30, 2012 at Paako Beach, “Secret Cove,” in Maui, Hawaii. Reverend Kahu Kamuela, a native Hawaiian and second-generation minister, incorporated traditional native blessings and rituals as the couple exchanged vows, which incorporated the children in an observance of family, life and spirit. Friends and family, including Tim’s parents, Ed and Flo Kovar, and friends from California, Alaska, Hawaii, Oregon and New Jersey, watched on during the Hawaiian wedding song and dance, blessing of the rings, and uniting of the hands with a Hoapili Lima Tapa cloth. All participated in a ceremonial drink of Awa, which served as the first toast to the bride and groom.

The beach ceremony was preceded by an early morning tree climb in a majestic Banyan tree with a special blessing offered by the couple’s friend and wedding hostess, Carolyn Temes. Following the beach ceremony, a Luau reception began at sunset along the shore of Wailea Beach. The traditional Polynesian feast included Kalua pork cooked in an Imu, along with a variety of tropical fruits, desserts and drinks.

Family and friends joined the couple in the weeklong celebration that included a day trip to the black sand beaches of Hana and a trip to Haleakala, Maui’s highest peak, to witness the sunrise along 38

the volcanic landscape. The group also enjoyed snorkeling, kayaking, whale watching, and more. Tim, Amy, Benjamin and Chloe enjoyed a second week together on the island following the departure of friends and family. The couple grew up a block away from each other in the small town of Fremont, Nebraska and connected twenty years later following paths that took Tim to Atlanta and Portland, and Amy to Sacramento and Nashville. They jointly reside in Franklin, Tennessee and Portland, Oregon, where Tim operates Tree Climbing Planet, a technical and recreational tree climbing school and Amy manages public relations firm, Gray Public Relations.

Tonya Marie Blakely, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Jesse Newton Franks, III wed Mr. Christopher Michael Wilson on October 20, 2012. The FranksWilson wedding ceremony and reception took place at Nashville’s Historic War Memorial Auditorium. The couple had the majority of guests seated in the upper level balcony of War Memorial. This made for a very unique and “small wedding feel” but still held close to 300 guests” says Tonya.

Guests entered the Auditorium for ushers to show them to the balcony.

The ceremony was elegant and simple. Dr. James Harvey, a longtime family friend and Pastor of the Franks’, presided over the ceremony. The Bridal Party consisted of Bryana Franks, sister of the Bride and Maid of Honor, Cari-Ann Redding and Kristen Slocum. The groomsmen were Chris Thomas, Best man, Ben DeBerry, John Hagy and Randy Boen. Once the ceremony ended, guests were asked to go outside onto the plaza. The plaza was decorated with tables, chairs and couches for the guests. Once the cocktail hour was over, the guests were ushered back into the transformed Auditorium for a full on party! Local band, Mile 8, played the reception.

For the bride and groom, this was very special because the couple first met at a Mile 8 concert, four years prior. “We wanted our guests to be able to dance when they wanted to dance, sit if they wanted, eat when AND what they wanted and to just let loose and have a good time.” Guests were invited to eat at different food stations provided by The Copper Kettle, dance the night away, and to try many different types of cakes provided by Dessert Designs by Lealand Riggan. As guests started to wind down the evening, they were handed three foot long sparklers to light for Mr. and Mrs. Wilson’s departure. The newlyweds went to St. Thomas, US Virgin Islands for their honeymoon. They will reside in Green Hills.

Elizabeth Lee Wilson and Robert M. Allbritton exchanged their wedding vows on December 30, 2012 at 2:30 in the afternoon.

The wedding ceremony was held at Skinner Chapel at Scarritt Bennett with the immediate families in attendance. Liz chose a wedding gown of lace accented with a satin oyster cummerbund and carried an unusual bouquet that included mini artichokes, black magic roses, yellow orchids and even peacock feathers, created by Caprice Palmer of Enchanted Florist. Bob wore a tradition morning jacket, fitting for a southern afternoon wedding. The couple then celebrated with extended family and friends at Union Station Hotel. Union Station was still decorated for Christmas and the tree and garland made a festive backdrop for the reception. The lobby was transformed into an elegant venue for serving their guests. The bride and groom were announced in the McKinley’s Room, which showcased the dance floor, the couple’s whimsical cake and conversational seating. As their first public act as husband and wife, Bob and Liz invited their guests to witness their Lighting of the Unity Candle ceremony. The bride’s sister, Reverend Vona Wilson and also the Maid of Honor, offered a blessing on the celebration and shared a passage from Song of Solomon 8:6….”place me like a seal over your heart…” The couple then took to the dance floor for their first dance, “I Can’t Help Falling in Love with You.” After the official “dip” the bride’s Uncle Bill surprised the couple by “cutting in” for a special dance with his niece. The guests joined in too and the afternoon was filled with dancing, visiting, feasting and celebrating! Their guests were from as far away as California and Colorado; Kentucky and Alabama and of course right here in middle Tennessee. From age two to ninety five, everyone celebrated in style. Bob and Liz are avid cyclists and their wedding cake was a reflection of their love of the sport. Three white tiers were off-set with one in blue; according to Liz, the color of a clear blue sky on a perfect bike riding day. It was decorated by a boy and bride on a bike.

The cake was topped with an “A” in block style, to stand for Allbritton and also to distinguish the fact and Bob and Liz are fans of Auburn football! And the cake itself, one layer of red velvet and one of vanilla – YUM! The cake was specially designed for the couple by Stephanie Felts of The Sweetest Day. Highlights of the day for the Liz and Bob - being surrounded by family and friends and a wedding day that was filled with celebration and love; it was all they dreamed it would be and more. And for the guests, Union Station hotel, the cake and a surprise – cookies with milk shooter. As the couple made their way to say good-bye, the guests lit sparklers to form an archway; the couple got into a horse drawn carriage and took a tour of downtown Nashville. All the special moments of the day were captured by local photographer, Brooke Rainey. Honeymoon destination – Costa Rica! Liz Wilson Allbritton is the owner of Monarch Advisory Group; a financial planning firm in Franklin, Tennessee. Bob Allbritton is a franchisee and owns two Smoothie King locations in Cool Springs .Liz and Bob look forward to many days with blue skies and long bike rides ahead!

Y’all read about my love of yoga and b. fab fitness last month, but those aren’t the only weapons in my fitness-not-fatness arsenal. The workouts I’ve tried so far (there are seven total) have delivered on that promise and then some-- perfect for pretty brides-to-be who are crunched for time. Now while we’re talking fitness, I refuse to let even one of y’all venture into unhealthy pre-wedding crash dieting. Nobody wants to feel weak and crappy on one of the best days of your life! Boost up on lean protein, complex carbs and plenty of fresh fruits and veggies. One of my favorite ways to grab something healthy on the run is to stop into Whole Foods and hit the juice bar. The green lemonade is my favorite: spinach, kale, green apple and lemon. Sounds weird, tastes delicious. Another surefire route is to establish a solid regimen of vitamins to fill in the “gaps” that come about with living a busy life. The hubs and I have stumbled across an awesome line of supplements only available online that have developed a cult following, to say the least. Want to know more? On September 22, 2012 surrounded by beloved family members and cherished friends, Caroline Glyn Horner, DVM and Stuart Ervin were married at Christ United Methodist Church – Franklin, Tennessee.

The couple met at their alma mater, University of Tennessee, Knoxville, TN. The bride, a native of Williamson County, is a 2012 graduate of the University Of Tennessee College Of Veterinary Medicine. She is an Associate Veterinarian with Southern Veterinary Center, LLC in Smyrna, Tennessee.

On a bright crisp October Saturday, JC Carlton and Kathleen Clauser Johnson were surrounded by family and close friends as they joined their lives in marriage. The ceremony, officiated by a dear friend, the Reverend Jerry Masterson, was at Johnson’s Chapel United Methodist Church in Brentwood, Tennessee. church and grounds provided a lovely background for the photos. Flowers for the church, bride, groom, mothers and five granddaughters were selected from Bellevue Florist. The bride and groom were honored to have their mother’s, Myrtle Carlton and Rita Clauser stand with them when the ceremony began. The personal and spiritual ceremony included the family and friends in phrases of commitment. The eldest grandsons, Trip Crawford and Elijah Carlton, brought the rings forward to be blessed by the Reverend.

Aaron and Emily Barker were married April 7, 2012. Aaron, a Captain in the United States Army, is the son of Ron and Sheila Barker of Key West, Florida. Emily, daughter of Andy and Jan Marshall of Franklin, Tennessee, was a Registered Nurse with Vanderbilt Medical Center at the time of their wedding. The couple met at the CMA Music Festival in the summer of 2011. Aaron was celebrating his return from a recent deployment and Emily was catching up with a high school friend at the festival on the same evening. The couple met as the crowds were exiting the festival onto Broadway. It was almost love at first site for the two. A few short months later, Aaron and Emily realized their summer romance was quickly growing into a serious relationship. Each of them admitted to their friends and family that they have found “the one.” Just before Christmas, Aaron asked Emily’s father’s blessing to propose. Two long weeks later, Emily flew to Key West to meet Aaron’s parents. It was there, on his favorite beach in his hometown, that Aaron surprised Emily by dropping to his knee as he asked her hand in marriage on the day before New Year’s Eve. Aaron knew he was scheduled for transfer to Fort Huachuca, Arizona for several months. The couple did not want to wait until his training was completed before they married. Therefore, they decided quickly that the wedding needed to be before he reported for duty. In early January of last year, the pair scheduled the wedding for April. Aaron and Emily were married in front of two hundred friends and family at Woodmont Christian Church in Nashville. Before the ceremony, the bride and her bridesmaids had their hair and make up done at Unruli Salon in downtown Franklin. The bridesmaids wore a soft eggplant shade of purple, holding pale green and white bouquets with hints of purple. The groomsmen men were in their military dress blues. The bride and groom had a traditional military wedding made complete with a saber guard ceremony at the conclusion. The ceremony was followed by a reception at the Pinnacle at Symphony Place in downtown Nashville. The guests enjoyed cocktails then a Southern buffet style dinner catered by Puckett’s Gro. & Restaurant, owned by the bride’s family. Then, the couple had their first dance to “She’s Everything,” by Brad Paisley. Following the traditional dances, the couple cut the wedding cake “Army style,” by using the traditional saber to make the first cut. The remainder of the evening was filled with high energy dancing while the guests were overlooking beautiful night views of Nashville as their backdrop. The entire wedding day went very smoothly with the help of their wedding coordinator, Suzanne Jeffers of Belle Events. The couple lived in Arizona for several months and now reside in Fort Hood, Texas.

It’s a brand new year which means refreshing new trends in decor, fashion, and our personal favorite....the wedding industry!! Obviously we want YOUR eyes to see these trends first so we have scoured through the multitudes of bridal blogs and condensed our favorites into a handy-dandy list.

BRIDAL FASHION: For the bride, sleeves are making a huge comeback this year. Think pretty sheer lace versus. the solid sleeves with ballooning shoulders from the 80’s. Also look for the oh-so practical idea of pockets in the gown! The modern bride will never have to be parted from the essentials such as her cell phone or chapstick. Joking aside this is a great idea but more for the reception versus the ceremony. We will also be seeing new ideas for the bridesmaids and groomsmen. The idea of coordinating, but not matchy-matchy, will continue from 2012 but now we’ll see more use of pattern & texture. Bridesmaid’s dresses may use ruffles, lace, or an hombre design, while groomsmen will be adorned with fun ties or vests.

CAKE & FOOD: The customary wedding cake will continue to be replaced by more interesting dessert options. Instead of one large cake, guests may be offered an assortment of smaller and more diverse cakes or even pies. Ice cream sundae bars are another fun option to help beat the heat in the summer months. If the traditional route is chosen, look for fun colors and patterns 50

to be incorporated into the design adding a more personal touch. When it comes to food, we will see two different directions being taken. The first is a comeback with the plated dinner offering options such as pork and pasta versus the old standard of chicken and beef. The second trend will be new and unique food stations that offer items rich in the couple’s culture but served in fun and inventive ways.

Venue - Booking one space to be used for ceremony as well as reception will become increasingly popular this year. We will see a transition away from your traditional venues into more unique and interesting ones.

The holidays are a popular time for engagements so we’d like to congratulate all the ladies out there sporting some brand new bling! 2013 promises to be a great year to be a bride and we’re so excited to be a part of the magic.

With this being the annual Bridal issue, I wanted this issue’s MAW Q&A to be with two people that are connected to two of the most prestigious properties in our area for weddings and events. Let’s chat a little about the wedding reception and ceremony options available at Belle Meade Plantation. There are several reasons a Bride-to-Be selects a venue, what would you say is one key component to the success of the many events you host at Belle Meade Plantation?

LM: Thanks so much, Johnny! I’m honored to represent Belle Meade Plantation since 2007! The gorgeous Boxwood Garden and majestic Carriage House allow for both a wedding and reception to be held on site. By hosting a wedding and reception at our location, brides helps simplify travel for their guests. Our location is unique because we have the “coolness” factor of having a truly historic venue that is private, yet still so convenient to the action downtown. We are successful because we have an amazing venue with a fantastic team to take care of our brides.

JC: I notice that you’re heavily booked for 2013 and already have a few weddings and receptions on the books for 2014; would that mean that a hopeful bride would simply be too late to have Belle Meade Plantation as their wedding venue?

photo courtesy of Once Like A Spark JC: I’m impressed with everything about Belle Meade Plantation, but for me, knowing that you have a world class winery on premise is something that takes your venue to a stratospheric level - Belle Meade Winery has notched out a nice little corner of Nashville that is driving some serious foot traffic; would you say the winery helps brides and planners for various types of events take a serious look at your venue for their event?

Some use the winery’s others products to make goody bags for their guests.

Rehearsal dinners and corporate parties have added on wine tastings & tours of our mansion to delight and entertain their groups. This is such a memorable experience for their guests!

JC: The location of Belle Meade Plantation is so centrally located in Nashville and seems so convenient to everything in the city, would you say that gives you a nice feather in your cap with potential clients?

LM: Our winery has definitely added an element that is unique to us. Many LM : Absolutely - being only seven brides have added our wine to stock miles from downtown has us within their bars to celebrate at their receptions.

LM: Not at all! For years it was simply understood that a bride would desire a Saturday wedding, but our brides are strong women of the modern age and are exploring their options for the perfect time and place that they will say I do. Most have now realized that every wedding is a destination trip for their guests and that they will be traveling to attend. This fact goes in their favor because they know that the guests are coming for a wedding, but will stay for a mini-vacation in Nashville. So, we’re seeing that a Friday or Sunday wedding is sometimes more popular because they get to celebrate the entire weekend with their guests. They will either have a wedding, kick-off the festivities on Friday night, or have their wedding be the perfect culmination. This allows the couple to enjoy extended time with friends and family for a memorable

weekend.

JC: In closing, I’ve enjoyed our conversation today and I must say that after talking about events with you, it makes me want to throw a party at Belle Meade Plantation! Is there anything new that can be expected from Belle Meade Plantation for 2013?

LM: So glad you asked! We’re currently switching our hvac systems over to geothermal ~ that’s right, we’re going “green!” We’ll also be installing a new concrete surface for our tented events which will give them a more secure surface. On the border will be our new croquet court. We can’t wait to see how much our changes will enhance our events! We’re always trying to be a better version of ourselves by making our property more attractive and efficient for all guests whether planning for their weddings, holiday parties or just playing the role of tourist.

Do You Have the Guts to be Beautiful?

“Please Lord, no bumps or rolls and no zits.” Those were the two things I remember praying for on my wedding day. It was the most important day of my life and more importantly, the most photographed day of my life. God forbid I’d have to spend the next forty years looking at photographs of back boobs and concealer spots, especially since I was married before the age of Photoshop.

Even if you’re good with photo editing, you don’t want to face the day feeling self-conscious about how you look. Maybe you’ve even started researching which cleansing fast or last minute ‘drop a dress size’ diet you’ll attempt in the next twelve weeks. I ask that you weigh your options carefully and then decide. Quick and easy are not always without consequence. If you want to make a lifestyle change that will solve your diet and skin problems, I challenge you with one simple question.

Do you have the guts to be beautiful? It’s the title question of a beautiful book by Dr.’s Jennifer Daniels, MD, and Mitra Ray, PhD. And when they say guts, they’re not talking about your ability to stand up to your future mother-in law.

It all starts in your gut- your small intestine. This is where real magic happens, where nutrients like niacin, which fuels our metabolism, or omega-3 fats, which form a protective layer on our skin, are taken into our circulatory system and delivered to their final destinations. According to Drs. Ray and Daniels, years of unhealthy eating have damaged our guts, weakening this delivery system. When our bodies don’t get the nutrients we need, they don’t work so well.

It’s a combination of undernourishment (lack of all the right foods) and over-toxification (now that’s a word I made up, but you get the idea- too much sugar, fake foods and over-processed garbage). Metabolisms slow from a lack of important nutrients, and junk ingredients in processed foods stimulate cravings for sugar and carbohydrates.

A growing population + more roads = congestion problems solved.

Right? Not so fast. Across the nation more and more cities are reaching a “fork in the road.” The thought process is, if more roads are built, traffic will stop being gridlocked and citizens will stop complaining. Everyone will be content – for a while. Unfortunately, this “solution” is short-lived.

Transportation history illustrates when asphalt is laid, more vehicles come. According to Smart Communities, traffic congestion already costs an estimated $168 billion annually in lost productivity, and is expected to triple in coming years wasting productivity and fuel and worsening our air quality. Our SOV (Single Occupancy Vehicle) habits have triggered an increasing dependency on oil imports. In 1970, 23 percent of America’s petroleum was imported.

Today, more than 54 percent is imported with this number estimated to reach more than 60 percent. The cost of oil imports to U.S. consumers total approximately $50 billion annually.

Automobiles are a significant contributor to changes in our climate, as producers of smog. Records show a slow but steady increase in average world temperature commonly known as global warming. Global climate change stems from the “greenhouse effect” which is the process by which certain gases in the atmosphere trap energy from the Sun. The transportation sector accounts for nearly one-third of the greenhouse gas emissions originating from the United States. Motor vehicles are responsible for 80 percent of these emissions. Because of the high concentration of carbon dioxide gas being emitted into the air, severe health problems can result.

environmentally aware and adopt new ways of commuting to work.

Some areas are implementing a fresh new route for dealing with growth and transportation problems: sustainable transportation.

The focus is on people, rather than on cars. With pollution and population on the rise, communities must realize that the environment no longer can sustain SOV’s as the only means of mobility. There are several transportation options that reduce the use of petroleum including carpooling/vanpooling, public transportation services, bicycling, walking and telecommuting (working from home). Each of these options shares the benefits of saving money and the environment.

Williamson County and Franklin have been and continue to be visionary leaders by addressing and promoting sustainable transportation solutions that include carpooling, vanpooling, public transit, and the planning and design of bike paths and sidewalks.

By incorporating alternative modes of transportation into our transportation and land use planning, our county is laying the foundation toward building a community that meets its citizen’s mobility needs without causing undue harm to the environment.

It is time to write a new chapter in the transportation history books that speaks of creating livable communities through the development of an infrastructure that supports alternate modes of transportation as well as the automobile. Our reward will be a reduction in foreign oil dependency and consumption, as well as much improved public health and cleaner air.

This is the first time the group has held the party and they plan to make it an annual event. he 9th Annual Leiper’s Fork Christmas Parade was held December 22, 2012 after a rainout a previous weekend. And just when you thought it could not get any better....it did!

Originally scheduled for December 8th and postponed because of bad weather the timing was perfect to set the mood for the holiday week.

Daddy Warbucks a.k.a. John Shuck served as the Grand Marshall accompanied by Annie and dog Sandy. Every float, car and character you can imagine and some you could not …paraded through the Village. And of course Santa was at the gazebo to hear all the little boy’s and girl’s wishes. Donations were collected for Williamson County Animal Control.

With all the fabulous events held at his gallery and around town, this “gal about town” was bound to run into Kelly Harwood eventually! We finally met this summer, while he was modeling for a “What to Wear” for the Heritage Ball. Now that I know him, I see what a treasure he is to Franklin!

Kelly is the owner of Gallery 202 and an amazing artist. He has many different artistic styles and enjoys pallet knife florals the most, which he is asked to do quite often in his “in house” studio in the gallery. If he gets a chance to hang any on the walls, it isn’t long before someone is taking them out the front door. He also really enjoys painting landscapes, wild life and abstracts. He’s a frequent flyer all over the world and he loves taking photographs and painting from them. When you think wildlife, mallards and bobcats may come to mind. However, Kelly’s repertoire of creatures includes many of the sea turtles he paints while visiting his home in Maui. My favorite of Kelly’s works is a likeness of a Picasso he painted on a piano. (Pictured below) Even though he’s a world traveler, Kelly says his favorite place to be is in Franklin. If you ever go to his gallery and you should, you will see why. It is breath taking. Historic Clouston Hall, circa 1821, was purchased by Kelly over two years ago to be turned into the beautiful gallery that it is today. A cannon ball burn on the floor and blood stains on the wall are referred to as Civil War “battle scars” and attribute to the gallery’s mission statement of “History Embracing Art.” Occupied many years by the late artist and Franklin legend, Bunn Gray, it is only fitting that the landmark would become a home for the works of so many local artists. Kelly says that the community has totally embraced the gallery. It’s a part of several downtown tours and Kelly credits local tour guide Margie Thessin for so many of the people from all over the globe who come to appreciate and purchase the wonderful art. The gallery is also a main attraction on the Downtown Franklin Art Crawl the first Friday of every month.

Kelly is originally from Gadsden, Alabama, as is his friend of twenty six years, Jim McReynolds. Kelly says he begged Jim to move to Franklin to work with him in the gallery. Jim did and he is now the manager, in addition to many other roles. Kelly also says that Jim is a “closet artist,” but I have not been privileged to see any of his work. I won’t give up, though!

I see Gallery 202 and Kelly Harwood as being “very Franklin” with all the charm and creativity that entails. It’s really all about local artists here and the friendships he has made. Some of the other artists displayed are Julie Harvey, Tiffany Foss and Barbara Coons. Barbara is one of my favorite artists in the gallery because of her use of guitars and maps. Very clever!

In my most recent visit to the gallery, Kelly asked if I had sung there because the acoustics are outstanding. While I am known to sometimes break out into song, I had not yet done it at the 202. He said that I must so we went to the piano room and I let out a little Adele. He was right.

The historic hall not only embraces the art but music, as well. Now that’s my kind of place!

MUSIC: The Electric Time Machine I’ve been performing in bands for almost fifteen years. I traveled a lot at first, but my family has kept me close to home for a while now. My current band is called “The Electric Time Machine.” Since this is the wedding issue of the magazine, I thought I would let you know about us because weddings are our specialty! Our motto is “rockin’ you through the decades,” and we do just that! We play everything from Chuck Berry to Lady Gaga with a lot of 80’s in between. We dress in costumes to represent each decade and as you can see in the photos, I am the 60’s! We are currently a four-piece band but plan to be a five-piece by spring with the addition of a keyboard player.

If you know anything about bands, you know that they don’t always get along, aren’t really friends off stage and very often break up because of “creative differences.” I have been so fortunate the past eight years to be with a group that does not fit any of those descriptions. The four of us have an incredible chemistry that translates very well on stage. Everybody’s abilities and unique personalities fit together like pieces of a puzzle that result in a fun, high energy show filled with unexpected raw talent, not common in a cover band.

So let me introduce you to the guys… Our bass guitar is David Larsen. Playing as our 70’s fly guy, David’s bass lines can emphasize the groove of all styles of music, while keeping out of the way of the arrangement. We kind of consider him the “band geek,” but it’s pretty much because he’s a very meticulous, musical genius. Representing the 90’s is “Too Legit To Quit” drummer Jason “Chafa” Chafatelli. With a drum set that lights up the night, his funk rhythms fill the room making it nearly impossible to stay in your seat. And last, but certainly not least, is lead guitarist Jason Miller. In his totally rad 80’s attire, he rocks rhythms with an emphasis on “full chords,” while his solos are a mixture of tone, emotion, speed and groove centered around scales and modes. I saved this Jason for last to also mention that we’ve been playing together for the full fifteen years I’ve been in bands. We met at Ole Miss and he and his wife moved here right after my husband and I did so that we could continue to create music. He’s like a brother to me. I am so blessed to have been in a band for so long with such an insanely talented, big-hearted, incredible guy.

I guess, since I’m describing members, I shouldn’t leave myself out. With hair and Go Go Boots like Nancy Sinatra, my vocal style could be described as a Southern American Adele fused with Janis Joplin and a little Pat Benatar. “Me and Bobby McGee” is my most requested song and as a big fan of Janis, I certainly take that as a compliment.

So book my band “The Electric Time Machine” for your wedding reception, corporate event, private party or club. You won’t regret it! We will take you back to your glory days no matter when they were!

THEATER: TPAC’s Catch Me If You Can A lot of my experience with the TPAC, since the start of my column, has lead up to this month’s performance of “Catch Me If You Can” and it has taken me on quite the journey! This year’s TPAC Gala theme was based around the show starting with a swanky 60’s pre-party. I was greeted at the door of the event by the co-chairs representing “PAN AM Airlines” in retro pilot and stewardess attire. Martinis were served, while excitement for the upcoming event spread. Then the night of the Gala finally came and it was unbelievable. The pre-party was only a small taste of the grand scale of the classic 60’s cocktail soiree. I was taken back in time and loved every minute of it. Guests entered TPAC’s Andrew Jackson Hall through an “airline concourse” and into a beautiful banquet right on the stage. Broadway star Aaron Tveit crooned, while dinner was served. I love the movie “Catch Me If You Can,” but the Gala raised my excitement level to see it live.

The show, based on the astonishing true story of world-class con artist Frank Abagnale, Jr., will land in Nashville for a limited engagement January 22-27. This is part of the first national tour of the Broadway musical. Kathleen O’Brien, TPAC president and chief executive officer said, “Even if you’re not familiar with Frank’s amazing life story or the Steven Spielberg film, you will be drawn in by this fabulous new musical.” She also said that when she saw it for the first time, she was so blown away that she knew they had to bring it to Nashville and I’m so glad they did! Once again, my anticipation increases before another great performance at the TPAC. There are many great shows still happening this season, and this is definitely one you’ll want to “catch”!

New Year’s Resolutions

Kathy, there’s something about a new year, a clean slate, if you will, that entices many of us to plan positive changes in our lives.

Some of us will make our resolutions permanent, while others will forget them before the Valentine’s Day candy hits the shelves. Is success just a matter of strong will or perseverance?

These attributes do play a part, but examining the goal more closely can greatly increase the chance of victory.

Heidi Grant, author of Succeed: How We Can Reach Our Goals, suggests the following: -BE SPECIFIC – “Attend a yoga class three times a week” is a better goal than “start doing yoga.”

-MAKE IT OUTSIDE YOUR COMFORT ZONE, BUT BE REALISTIC We tend to abandon goals when the bar is set too low. “Losing 10 pounds, so I can feel comfortable wearing my bathing suit” not “I want to be a Victoria Secret’s model.” (OK, this may be realistic to you, but (heavy sigh) not happening for me)!

-EXAMINE THE WHY – Knowing your “why” will help you stay motivated. “I want to improve my relationship with my son, so I can feel more connected” not just “I want to improve my relationship with my son.”

-KNOW YOUR OBSTACLES – Being aware of and planning for the inevitable things that could derail your endeavors will help keep you on track.

An example might be taking the alarm clock off the nightstand, if you want to start exercising before work and are a snooze button pusher.

For a radical twist on goal setting, try what Danielle LaPorte outlines in her book, The Desire Map. Divide your life into categories: house, job, relationships, etc. Next, describe how you want to feel in each of these areas.

Now, assign a goal that will deliver the feeling you are seeking. This approach ensures that you are setting a goal in line with your true desires.

This concept is based on the idea that we aren’t chasing “things” in our lives, we are chasing the feelings that we perceive these things will provide.

Planning a goal derived from a feeling that correlates with your true desires will be much easier to carry out.

If the goal was to buy a new TV room couch, for example, a desired feeling of coziness would result in a different purchase that a feeling of spaciousness.

Good to know before you swipe the credit card, right?

On a final note, take the time to relish in your accomplishments for the past year, as you contemplate changes and goals you would like to establish in the upcoming year. Oh, and if the desire to set goals interests you, but the process seems daunting, your first goal might be to hire a life coach to walk you through the process (BIG smile here)!

10th Annual National Wear Red Day MiddleTennessee invited to “go red” National Wear Red Day is coming – and the American Heart Association is looking for Middle Tennessee organizations who want to paint the town red.

Friday, February 1, 2013, will mark the 10th Annual National Wear Red Day and the 10th year of the American Heart Association’s Go Red For Women® movement, working to save women’s lives from their No. 1 killer, heart disease.

We’ve made progress in women’s heart health over 10 years: • 34% fewer women are dying of heart disease each year. Estimated totals over 10 years: more than 627,000 women’s lives saved, now at 330 women per day.

• 23% more women are aware that heart disease is the No. 1 killer.

• We’ve driven an increase in publishing of gender-specific results in research.

• We’ve established differences in symptoms and responses to medications.

• We’ve created women-specific guidelines for prevention and treatment.

• Go Red For Women has contributed more than $44 million to women-specific research, treatment and education.

But much remains to be done.

• Heart disease affects one in three women nationally and here in Tennessee, killing approximately one woman every minute.

• An estimated 43 million women in the U.S. are affected by heart disease.

• Ninety percent of women have one or more risk factors for developing heart disease.

• Heart disease strikes more women than men, and is more deadly than all forms of cancer combined.

On National Wear Red Day, buildings, streets, companies, homes and individuals will be dressed in red across the country to mark women’s fight against heart disease. Landmarks such as Niagara Falls and the Epcot Ball at Epcot Center will be lit in red.

FirstBank Holds Hardhat Tour Of New Aspen Brook Centre Branch A hardhat tour of the new FirstBank branch in phase II of Aspen Brook Centre was held on Wednesday, Dec. 19. Franklin Noon Rotary Club Donates to High Hopes

Williamson Medical Center Expansion Plans Approved By THSDA Williamson Medical Center received approval from the Tennessee Health Services and Development Agency to move forward with plans to add much-needed surgical suites and an adjoining tower for pediatric services.

Before any expansions can be made to a hospital, a Certificate of Need must be approved by the THSDA. Williamson Medical Center CEO Donald Webb said after Wednesday’s hearing, he is excited to embark on this next phase of the planned expansion, which is set to include finalizing architectural designs, a project timeline and ultimately breaking ground later this year. As previously announced, expansion plans include additional operating rooms and the new tower with a dedicated children’s emergency department, and a pediatric wing slated to include 12 pediatric inpatient beds and four observation beds. The pediatric service line will bear the name Monroe Carell Jr. Children’s Hospital Vanderbilt at Williamson Medical Center. Currently, more than 6,000 children are treated annually by WMC Emergency Department staff.

Williamson Medical Center, a 185-bed hospital fully accredited by The Joint Commission, provides comprehensive inpatient and outpatient care including emergency services, with credentialed physicians in 53 specialties and sub-specialties.
