At Williamson Medical Center, our story is best told by our patients.

They have been here. They know us well.

To Deed and Duane Eddy, Williamson Medical Center is where Duane’s life was saved when he suffered an abdominal aortic aneurysm. What started out as back pain ended with Duane collapsing at our front door. One more red light and he wouldn’t have made it, his doctors told him.

What happened over the next few days, the Eddys describe as a symphony. Nurses, doctors and hospital staff working together to produce a beautiful outcome that meant Duane walked out of the hospital and back on stage where he belongs.

The Cotton Gin sat on the site of the battlefield off present day Columbia Avenue and some of the bloodiest fighting on November 30, 1864 during the Battle of Franklin. The reclaimation of the battlefield and the future rebuilding of a Cotton Gin on that site, along with the significance of the Battle of Franklin, have become subjects of national interest. We commemorate this profound chapter in our community’s history with this special edition of YOUR Williamson.

IN THE MOMENT Dear Readers,

I have spent a lot of time lately being mindful about living in the moment. Being present in all that I do. It’s difficult when you are busy doing life. To actually live in the moment is a challenge for us all, I suspect. We are all perpetually looking ahead, moving forward, planning, going, and doing. It’s exhausting! It’s hard to just BE. As a relatively new parent, I try desperately to hold on to the time that is childhood, as I’m sure many of you do the same.

Fleeting and ever moving in and of itself, this time is so precious Shelly & Keeling Birdsong that I find myself waking in the middle of the night to try to remember each moment and relive each day. Watching my daughter, as she begins to become a little person with her own plans, thoughts, goals and memories, is both surreal and heart wrenching in its importance to me now. Cherishing the moment by moment memories are so important both as a parent but as a human being present in this life. It is within these moments that our lives are blessed. Those feelings of blessing are what make living in the moment, especially as we enter the holiday season, so precious.

Life is what happens while you are busy making plans right? We all get so busy and bogged down with our lists and our to do’s we forget about… what we are doing. And definitely, why we are doing it. This season, in our corner of the world, is beyond beautiful. Have you looked out your window at a Tennessee fall morning? Have you driven down Main Street and watched the silent falling leaves, each one a different shade of autumn perfection? Have you smelled burning wood as someone starts that first fire of the season? So many things we should take the time to stop and see, taste, and feel… in that moment! The moments and the memories are the stuff our lives are made from. Thanksgiving and the coming of the holiday season gives most everyone pause to stop and think of what we are grateful for, to rejoice in our bounty and squeeze the hands of loved ones in prayer around our table, as we begin a season of unusual love, hope and gratitude. The approach – some might say the onslaught – of the retail driven holiday season can be overwhelming and inherently stressful, when we allow - Benjamin Franklin our priorities to shift from the moment to the trappings. Try hard this year to let all of that go and make an effort to just be blessed. Be grateful. Be present in your life and in the moment.

This issue is a blessing. It is filled with blessings we all enjoy because we are here in Williamson County. This month we commemorate the lives lost in our community during an event that has forever shaped our history. Maybe in another 150 years someone will find a copy of this issue and see Williamson County in THIS moment. Blessings in business abound here, as well. No one can attest to that more than a successful small business owner such as myself, and I can think of no better place to live and do business. I am not alone in my gratitude for having a great place to make a living. We hope you enjoy these business stories and their owners featured in this issue.

I am a newlywed and live in Franklin. I am about to spend my first “married” Thanksgiving with my in-laws. The group will be about 35 folks, and we will gather in East Tennessee late in the afternoon on Thanksgiving Day. I have been very excited about the day until recently when I discovered there is a requirement that everyone wear orange in support of the “home”team.

Ms. Grace suggests that you send a note to your host declaring your enthusiasm for sharing the meal and the inclusiveness of your new family. Ms. Grace further suggests that you choose a neutral color of clothing for the event such as ivory and bring an orange bouquet to the gathering.

As a die-hard college football fan from a family of football traditionalists south of the border (of Tennessee), I am having a little trouble with the orange requirement. What should I do? I want to show my love for my new family, but to represent my own family, too!

Hopefully, you can convey your desire to honor the host request and still represent your own family.

Most importantly, you want to present your most gracious self at this gathering and set the tone for future interaction with your in-laws.

Story & Photography by K York The 5th Annual Grape Stomp Festival presented by A Vintage Affair was held at O’More College of Design this year. Eighteen teams were in competition to see who could deliver the most juice from the grapes after a four-minute stomp. The costumes were outrageously cool; the food was delightfully delicious; and the wine, bourbon and moonshine were fantastically tasty. It was a beautiful fall afternoon to have fun while raising money for six different non-profits in Williamson County.

FALL HAS FINALLY ARRIVED IN WILLIAMSON COUNTY! IT’S TIME FOR COOLER TEMPS, SWEATERS AND BOOTS, FOOTBALL AND HAY RIDES. UNFORTUNATELY, FOR SOME OF US THE CHANGE OF SEASONS OFTEN USHERS IN ANGRY SKIN, AGGRAVATED ALLERGIES AND ALL OTHER SORTS OF UNPLEASANTNESS. WHAT’S A BEAUTY JUNKIE TO DO? SIMPLE! KICK UP THOSE CUTE BOOTS, WRAP YOURSELF IN A SNUGGLY BLANKET AND TAKE A GANDER. It’s not uncommon for our skin to change with the seasons. Summer months and the heat and humidity associated therein can often cause breakouts and clogged pores that are but a distant memory by the time the leaves turn. Similarly, dryness and irritation can happen in the cooler months thanks to blustery weather and moisture-zapping heat while indoors. So adjusting your skin care routine accordingly is essential in minimizing seasonal woes. Lighter formulas often don’t cut it in the fall and winter, while heavy-duty creams and lotions can easily cause breakouts in the heat of summer. Just like you wouldn’t wear a flimsy tank top when it’s fifty degrees outside, you don’t want to use the wrong products at the wrong time. So let’s get into it.

A general rule of thumb is that products that are a bit “heavier” are often required in the colder months. Don’t feel like you have to slap on pore-clogging glop, though – serums are true lifesavers this time of year. Though silky and lightweight, they pack a major punch. Clarins makes two of my all-time favorites: HydraQuench (hydrating) and Double Serum (anti-aging). Those of you with oily or breakout-prone skin will want to check out the offering of oil-free serums, like Kate Somerville. Us dry-skinned gals need to keep an eye out for serums containing hyaluronic acid, which magically draws moisture into the skin without causing breakouts. Even our eyes can get in on the awesome benefits of serums. Clinique’s All About Eyes is great for de-puffing tired eyes via a genius rollerball applicator. It’s like a soothing drink of water for your peepers.

I’ve talked in the past about face oils and of my love for them. They take center stage for me in the harsher months, either alone or blended with my moisturizer to calm my angry skin. Though my skin is dry and sensitive, y’all shouldn’t shy away from a good face oil even if you’re oily or breakout-prone. When your skin is receiving the proper amount of oil (and yes, you do need oil), your oil glands chill out and stop producing a bumper crop of pore-clogging nastiness.

Constantly freaking out your skin with harsh products containing alcohol, benzoyl peroxide and the like just creates a vicious cycle. So check out a face oil. The smart people at Clarins and

Cell turnover is essential during this time of year to avoid flaky skin and dead cells that settle into fine lines and wrinkles. There are many ways to accomplish this, depending on your skin type. I use my trusty Clarisonic brush a few times a week in the shower with just water for a thorough-but-gentle exfoliation. For a more aggressive approach, consider Retin-A under your nighttime moisturizer. Start with just one or two nights a week to see how your skin tolerates it. It’s best to follow the advice of your aesthetician or dermatologist here.

She will know best. If nothing else, a good scrubbing with a dampened old washcloth will help slough away dead skin. Do at least one of these. You’ll thank me.

Just because it’s not a hundred degrees out and you’re not poolside doesn’t mean you should retire the sunscreen. You need sunscreen every day. Every day, you ask? Yes girl. Every. Single.

Day. After cleansing and applying your face oil and serum or moisturizer, sunscreen should be either the last product you put on before your makeup or should be included in your tinted moisturizer or foundation. IntelliShade by Revision Skincare is my perennial favorite. It’s a very sheer tinted moisturizer with SPF 45 that literally adjusts to every skin tone (and even comes in a matte finish, if that’s your thing).

Here’s one last little bit of advice for protecting your skin in the winter: consider an essential oil or two (these are different from the face oils I mentioned earlier). Melaleuca is great for problem skin as well as maintaining a healthy scalp. Peppermint oil works wonders on stuffy sinuses and seasonal allergies.

Calendula is fabulous for calming irritated skin. Do your homework, though. Labels can be misleading and shoddily-assembled oil blends can actually do more harm than good.

DōTerra is my go-to brand for essential oils.

Now take that pretty face out, and enjoy this beautiful season!

DIANA WARNER TRUNK SHOW AT MOXIE PETITES Story & Photography by Rachel Weishaupt Moxie Petites hosted the Diana Warner Trunk Show in September at their Cool Springs store. Diana Warner is a Franklin native who uses her artistic abilities to design beautiful fashion pieces. Guests tried on Diana’s gorgeous jewelry and stylish shoes, while sipping on champagne and browsing the other wonderful items at Moxie Petites. Lynda and Jack Stone are familiar faces in Williamson County. Living in the area since their days at Lipscomb University many years ago, they’ve raised a family here and now enjoy their beautiful grandchildren. The great love of family was apparent as we visited the home of Lynda and Jack to combine this month’s fashion piece with family and tradition for Thanksgiving.

The family owns the very popular Puffy Muffin in Brentwood and Cool Springs. Lynda opened the doors to Puffy Muffin in October of 1986. During this season of Thanksgiving, she shares how thankful she is to have the constant support of her husband Jack by her side; memories of the “early days” when Jack would get off work and head over to help Lynda mop floors when they were at Huffs Food Town.

Puffy Muffin is truly a family business as both their daughters and son-in-law all work together to make the business successful. You can tell when talking with daughters Ali and Kristi how much they love working side by side. The great affection they have for one another shines through. The beauty of the family can be seen simply by watching Lynda and dad Jack smile lovingly over their girls.

While Lynda says marrying family and business is “risky business,” she will also be the first one to tell you, “If you navigate with mutual respect and boundaries, it is one of the most fulfilling processes an extended family can experience. It becomes a training ground of sacrifice, forgiveness, patience and unconditional love. All these hard places have the ability to produce in us a commitment to kindness, gentleness and genuine love for one another. Put in business terms, ROI!” Thanksgiving is a blended holiday as dinner has moved to Ali and Jason’s house to include Jason’s parents, siblings and cousins to be a part of the day. With quite a few people at the table, the atmosphere is always a lot of fun.

Lynda’s favorite dish for Thanksgiving is a recipe from her own Mother, who was an excellent cook and taught her daughter how to make cornbread. The recipe is sold at the Puffy Muffin and is also one that is proudly featured in the latest edition of her cookbook Taste Imagination.

Traditions are important to Lynda and Jack. Lynda explained, “I want our grandchildren, as our children experienced, to know family and tradition through the sights, sounds, and tastes of a happy family gathering. Food to us is something to be savored and enjoyed. You would have a laugh to hear the audible...hums, and yum’s around the table! The familiarity of taste is meaningful to keep traditions alive. I would encourage families to continue some of the same dishes year to year...familiar foods bring sensory pleasures that are the catalyst to the tradition.”

One of the things both Lynda and Jack share that they are most proud of is the strong faith both their daughters have. Their love of the Lord, shared with their spouses, is teaching their grand children the same values and traditions Ali and Christy were raised with.

The annual program helps these cancer survivors regain their beauty and confidence with a night of fashion, courtesy of Dillard’s, along with a celebration with their fellow survivors. The beautiful women had a chance to share their stories, shine in the spotlight and walk the runway with friends and family. PROTECT YOURSELF AGAINST THE FLU INFLUENZA MAY NOT BE AS TOPICAL AS EBOLA, BUT IT’S MUCH MORE PREVALENT

we may not even get sick. Vaccination helps to reduce this risk and is the best way we can protect ourselves and others from the flu.

The CDC recommends that everyone over 6 months of age get a flu shot every year, unless they have a severe, life-threatening allergy to the flu vaccine or an ingredient in it.

For children ages 2–8 years of age, the Live Attenuated Influenza Vaccine (LAIV) mist is recommended (see reference below for those who are not recommended), however if this is not available, Inactivated Influenza Vaccine (IIV) should be used. Children under 8 years of age may also be recommended to receive two doses of vaccine depending on previous vaccination history.

In the wake of all the publicity regarding Ebola Virus Disease, it is important to remember that influenza (flu) season is upon us.

We must keep in perspective, while EVD is very serious, here in the U.S., each year millions of people are infected with flu, hundreds of thousands are hospitalized and thousands die from the flu. In the U.S., influenza outbreaks tend to fall between the months of October and May. The highest flu activity tends to occur between December and February.

While it is impossible to predict how severe this season will be, there are several things you can do to help prevent the spread.

HAND HYGIENE While droplets from a cough or sneeze are infectious, the flu virus, as well as other infections, are also spread by touching other surfaces or each other with our hands. Washing your hands with soap and water or alcohol-based gel or foam, will help eliminate infection on your hands.

GET VACCINATED Many of us can be infected with the flu and are capable of spreading the virus to others before we even know we are sick. In some cases,

KEEP IT TO YOURSELF Anyone with a fever and respiratory symptoms such as cough, runny nose or sore throat, should watch how much contact they have with others. Cover your mouth when you cough or sneeze. We recommend those who feel sick staying home from work and if you have to be around other people, especially in a healthcare facility, consider wearing a mask. Performing hand hygiene is also critical to keeping other safe.

TO SUM IT UP… Influenza is primarily transported through respiratory sources such as coughing and sneezing. It’s just in the air and to a lesser degree our hands. The best way to prevent the flu is to get vaccinated. Then cover your mouth when you cough and sneeze and if you do get sick – stay home. Stay away from other people. That’s a hard thing for a lot of us to do, but if you don’t, you can get other people sick. And don’t forget to wash your hands! Also encourage your colleagues, friends, and family to get vaccinated. While it takes a few weeks for the vaccine to begin to work, there is still time.

For many of us Thanksgiving Dinner is something we look forward to each year.

However, what if the circumstances were different, and you didn’t know where or how you would provide your family with a holiday dinner?

For some children the only meals they get to eat are school breakfasts and lunches.

When school is out for the holidays they go hungry. Elderly people struggling to pay for higher heating bills and rising medication costs have very little left to go toward food. While some anticipate Thanksgiving with joy, the holiday becomes a day of sadness and hardship for others.

United Way of Williamson County’s Patricia Hart Society recognized a great need in our community and decided to take action. The program “Full Tummies, Warm Hearts” began in 2004 and since that time over 4000 families have received a plastic container full of items and gifts needed to make Thanksgiving a brighter holiday.

Families are referred to United Way through their partner agencies and school systems. Each year the number of those needing assistance grows. A family bio is completed so the needs of the individual families can be met. Some of the containers are filled for a family of one, and some are for larger families, sometimes as many as 10-15 people.

Each container includes a minimum of a $30 gift card and all the basics for a Thanksgiving dinner (green beans, potatoes, stuffing, desserts, etc.). A list of suggested items is also included to make the basket more personal. United Way has even taken into account special dietary needs and offers suggestions for filling a container that will go to senior citizens.

How can you help? While local companies and individuals have already begun signing up as sponsors, there is always a need for additional support. Because last minute needs arise and new families are brought to United Way’s attention, you can still help as financial donations are being accepted.

The baskets are assembled before November 18th and delivered by November 20th.

It is a beautiful sight to walk in the United Way office and see hundreds of baskets lined up for delivery. Individuals and companies step up to deliver the baskets. If you are interested in being a volunteer, please contact United Way at 615-771-2312.

HABITS OF HAPPY PEOPLE: They Have Strong Social Connections Thanksgiving is almost here, which means the holiday season is just around the corner.

Everyone will have a different response to what makes the holidays special, but the common denominator for happiness, this time of year, is connection. Do you know anyone that cooks a complete turkey dinner, or creates holiday magic just for his or her own benefit? Highly doubtful. The joy surrounding our celebrations comes from sharing the experience with family and friends. Happy people know this and cultivate these relationships throughout the year.

Positive Psychology has found a direct relationship between the quality of our relationships and our happiness. (Note the word quality, not quantity; Facebook friends do not count. :) ) We are social creatures by nature, and the bonds we create with each other provide numerous benefits for our physical and mental health.

The sense of well being experienced from being a part of a caring group is good for our health. It raises the “feel good” endorphin levels and reduces the stressful cortisol levels in our brains. It lowers stress-related health problems, lowers the risk of mental illness and speeds up recovery time from infirmities. It’s no wonder that Dan Buettner, in his book, The Blue Zones, Lessons For Living Longer From The People Who’ve Lived The Longest, found strong social connections among all of the centenarians he interviewed.

Happiness derived from our connections seems to be contagious. In their book, Connected: The Surprising Power of Our Social Networks and How They Shape Our Lives, Dr. Nicholas Christakis and Dr. James H. Fowler reveal that we are connected to each other by three degrees of influence.

Simply stated, our happiness can influence our friends’ happiness and our friends’ friends’ friends’ happiness. The ripple effect of all this bliss benefits us as individuals and as a society.

Perhaps most interesting is the lasting effects of happiness derived from our relationships with one another. Studies have shown that buying things will create an immediate, but short-lived happiness spike.

Happiness resulting from an experience with family or friends results in deeper, longer-lasting satisfaction levels. Most of us already know this to be true. This is probably why, on Monday morning, we ask each other what we did this weekend and not what we bought this weekend.

As we begin the holiday season of 2014, enjoy the food and festivities, appreciate the glitter and the gifts, but savor the people that matter the most. The memories shared with the people we love and cherish is what really makes the holidays “the most wonderful time of the year”.

$150,000 FOR THE BATTLEFIELD Story & Photography by K York The Battle of Franklin Trust held a successful fundraising event at the Carter House in October to raise $150,000 toward the purchase of the Lovell property on Columbia Pike. This well-known stretch of modern retail space is home to a vital piece of the proposed 20-acre Carters Hill Battlefield Park. The land, which was once part of the Carter House garden, saw the most furious fighting of the Battle of Franklin and is one of the most important Civil War battlefields that had not yet been preserved. Together with Franklin’s Charge, the Battle of Franklin Trust must raise $2.8 million by May 31, 2015 to secure the site.

THE BATTLE OF FRANKLIN 150TH ANNIVERSARY The 150th Anniversary of the Battle of Franklin is truly a unique and monumental event for our county and brings Franklin and our tremendous preservation efforts into not only the national forefront but gaining international recognition as well. In a mere five hours, thousands of lives were lost, and a horrible war between two sides of the same nation began to come to an end.

America’s history played out on our streets and in our historic homes. Today, groups like the Battle of Franklin Trust, Franklin’s Charge, the Heritage Foundation and the Williamson County Convention and Visitor’s Bureau work hard to retell that history and to reclaim much of what had been lost.

Can you imagine? Try to. For a moment, step back in time and relive those fateful days and hours. While we 21st century citizens of a much different place, cannot picture it, try for a moment to see the Carter Cotton Gin as it sat off what is today Columbia Avenue. Try if you can, to imagine the carnage and suffering and the destruction that took place all over this county and in particular over the expanse of just a few miles from the Carter House to the Carnton Plantation and all the places in between.

We take for granted what in so many cases is paved over, no longer even a glimmer, but thanks to so many in our community, fundraising and reclamation have become synonymous with Franklin’s history. It is our new battle to regain what has been lost and remember what was. Imagine too, the economic driver and destination that historic tourism provides here. Visitors from all over the world come to see Franklin. The interpretation and educational aspects of our history and those who lived it is now an opportunity we can truly pursue. Featured author Adam Goodheart is a noted historian, essayist and journalist. As America marks the 150th anniversary of our defining national drama, Goodheart’s book, 1861, presents a gripping and original account of how the Civil War began. Mr. Goodheart’s work has also appeared in National Geographic, Outside, Smithsonian, The Atlantic, and The New York Times Magazine. He is a regular columnist for the Times’ acclaimed Civil War series, “Disunion.” Tickets are $25 per person and can be purchased on the Franklin Theatre website. Proceeds benefit the Carter's Hill Battlefield Park reclamation project.

Bluegrass & Rooted Music in Commemoration of the Franklin 150 November 14, 8:00 pm The Franklin Theatre Featuring Alison Brown, Claire Lynch, John Cowan, Forrest O'Connor and more, this is a multi-artist benefit show, so we may even be adding artists right up to the date of the event!

Brown learned to play guitar at eight and banjo at 10. In 1987, Alison Krauss asked Brown to join her band, Union Station, and she spent the next three years touring and playing with the band.

In 1990, she moved to Tennessee, and was named International Bluegrass Music Association Banjo Player of the Year in 1991.

Long recognized and praised as a creative force in acoustic music, Claire Lynch is a pioneer who continually pushes the boundaries of the bluegrass genre. She is the reigning Female Vocalist of the Year for the International Bluegrass Music Association (IBMA) and a 2012 recipient of the United States Artists Walker Fellowship. Her career has been decorated with many other accolades, including two GRAMMY nominations and IBMA Vocalist awards in 2010 and 1997. Tickets are $25 per person and can be purchased on the Franklin Theatre website. Proceeds benefit the Carter Hill Park battlefield reclamation project.

Gun Carriage Restoration With the help and support of the State of Tennessee Historical Commission, the city government, preservation and community organizations and private individuals, Franklin, Tennessee has remounted four Civil War era bronze Federal Model 1841 6-Pounder Field Guns on appropriate reproduction gun carriages on the town square.

Volunteers from several Franklin preservation groups formed a “Cannons on the Square” committee with the mission to purchase and install four National Park-quality reproduction No. 1 Field Carriages on the Franklin Square by November 30, 2014. This project to mount and display the gun tubes on appropriate reproduction gun carriages was a total community initiative to preserve and conserve the legacy of the 1864 Battle of Franklin for current and future generations of Americans.

The city-owned bronze Federal Model 1841 6-Pounder Field Guns Civil War cannon tubes are original, cast in Massachusetts between 1847 and 1861. Two were cast in Springfield by N. P. Ames Founder in 1847; one in Chicopee by Ames Company in 1853; and one in Boston by Cyrus Alger & Company in 1861. Placement of the guns on the appropriate carriages will serve as a powerful and visible reminder of the battle. Franklin’s town center also marks the principle route (the Nashville/Columbia Pike) that both armies used to advance and retreat during John Bell Hood’s 1864 Nashville Campaign.

The replica No. 1 Field Carriages were purchased from Steen Cannon & Ordnance Works, Ashland, Ky., a supplier of high quality monument carriages to the National Park system.

Donated support to remove the old concrete mounts and prepare new pads for the No. 1 Field Carriages was provide a local crane service and engineering firm. Save The Franklin Battle Field Inc. (STFB), a 501(c)(3) non-profit corporation, has served as the holding and processing agent for all grants and donated funds.

A Vision for the Future By: Eric A. Jacobson, Battle of Franklin Trust CEO and Historian Franklin. The very word evoked a flood of emotions for those who fought on the outskirts of a small Tennessee town and those who saw their homes and personal lives irrevocably altered. Franklin was a shared experience - one that the participants understood without the need to elaborate or explain. Unfortunately, by the turn of the 20th century the Battle of Franklin had nearly been forgotten in the collective American experience. By the time of the 100th anniversary of the battle what happened on November 30, 1864 had, in many ways, became almost a caricature of itself. The battlefield was lost, the Carter House had been opened to the public barely a decade before, and the story was virtually unknown. Now, with the 150th anniversary of the battle upon us, this incredible story has emerged from the shadows of the past and guests are flocking to learn more about the battle, its impact on the once small town of Franklin, and how it fits into the bigger picture of American history. Today nearly 100,000 heritage tourists visit the Carter House and Carnton, and over the past decade, nearly 150 acres of the battlefield has been preserved and reclaimed thru a variety of collaborative efforts. Incredibly, the battlefield that almost everyone viewed as lost is slowly revealing itself from beneath pavement and asphalt and post-war houses. As a result, the story of those who fought, died, and suffered on that ground is also gaining momentum.

It would be easy to say that victory has been achieved and more has been accomplished than most ever thought was possible. In truth, our work is far from complete. There is more of the battlefield to save, and there is a wider audience to reach. But what is the ultimate vision? One of the primary goals is to make Franklin a major Civil War destination. One of the ways to do that, and perhaps the most important way, is to move beyond the fragmented past and think of Franklin as one cohesive and connected story. Not just Carter House, or Carnton, or Lotz House, or Winstead Hill, or Fort Granger, but rather – Franklin. That single word offers the greatest chance to make sure this story, which is a timeless part of our history, endures long into the future. Franklin must be a destination, as is Shiloh, Vicksburg, and Gettysburg, to name a few.

By restoring Franklin to its proper place on a national scale, and ensuring that it never succumbs to the curse of time and apathy, is to allow visitors who walk through the historic homes and across the

reclaimed battlefield an opportunity to reflect on what happened so many years ago and how it forever altered our history and how it impacts us to this very day. Nearly 100 years ago, veterans of the Battle of Franklin gathered together to commemorate what had happened on the last day of November in 1864. Some of them also tried desperately to establish a park so that future generations would know and understand what happened. Today, we are working to fulfill their wishes and protect this important piece of our shared history.

The vision for the future of this story is expansive. Very soon the final great chapter of the American Civil War can be better understood by the stories and events connected to a single word – Franklin.

Once In a Lifetime Franklin Battlefield Tour to Take Place on Nov. 30 At 5 a.m. on Nov. 30, The Battle of Franklin Trust CEO and historian Eric A. Jacobson will lead a tour of the Franklin battlefield beginning at the same time the Federal army began to arrive exactly 150 years earlier.

The tour will begin at the Carter House and cover the early hours of November 30, 1864 as the Federal army began to arrive on the outskirts of Franklin and establish a defensive line. From there the tour will shift to the arrival of the Confederate army and why the decision to attack was made. Participants will then be taken to at least six crucial points of the battlefield. Part of the tour will be visiting the site of a recent archaeological dig near the site of the Carter cotton gin and discussing what was uncovered during the work and the importance of the battlefield in that area. Space is limited to 40 participants. The tour will begin at The Carter House visitor center and will last 90 to 120 minutes.

The cost is $50 per person. Coffee and biscuits will be available at the beginning of the tour. Each participant will receive a “I Saved The Battlefield” t-shirt and a special 1914 Reunion ribbon. Second edition copies of Jacobson’s book, For Cause & For Country, will also be available and can be signed and personalized. Lotz House offers Exclusive Franklin Battlefield Tour Nov. 29 and 30 WITH NATIONAL PARK SERVICE CHIEF HISTORIAN EMERITUS ED BEARSS National Park Service Chief Historian Emeritus Ed Bearss will host an exclusive Franklin Battlefield bus tour November 29 and 30 to commemorate the 150th anniversary of the Battle of Franklin held Nov. 30, 1864 from the historic Lotz House and Museum.

The tour includes a continental breakfast served at 8:30 a.m. at the Lotz House located at 1111 Columbia Avenue. The bus leaves at 9 a.m. and includes stops at Winstead Hill, the Eastern Flank, The Carter House and Garden, Cotton Gin Park and return to the Lotz House at 1 p.m. If the weather is inclement, the tour will continue but guests will remain on the bus. The Lotz House, which has been on the National Historic Register since 1976, is located in the heart of downtown historic Franklin, Tennessee at the “epicenter” of the Battle of Franklin which was a pivotal battle in the Civil War on Nov. 30, 1864. The house has been open to the public as a Civil War house museum since Oct. 30, 2008.

ED BEARSS: Ed Bearss is an American icon. Chief Historian emeritus at the National Park Service, World War II veteran, and the father of modern day Civil War battlefield preservation, the Smithsonian recognized him in 2005 as one of thirty-five people who, along with such notables as Bill Gates, Steven Spielberg, and Wynton Marsalis, have immeasurably enriched our lives over the last quarter century.

Now 91 years old, Bearss continues to pursue the one thing he has loved almost his entire life: history. His deep passion for the Civil War was aroused in the seventh grade after reading a biography on J.E.B. Stuart. He never looked back.

Since his retirement in 1995 he has become a champion of battlefield preservation, giving tours across the nation and around the world.

Senators, Congressmen, business leaders, preservationists, and hundreds of thousands of others have been mesmerized over the decades by his oratory and memory of the American past. It’s estimated he is on the road over 200 days a year giving talks and leading tours. He is a living legend and leading voice on story of the American past.

Lotz House partners with Tennessee State Museum to co-host a “Historian’s Dinner with Ed Bearss” The two organizations will host American icon Ed Bearss and seven other historians for a “Historian’s Dinner” November 29 and 30 to commemorate the 150th Anniversary of the Battle of Franklin held November 30, 1864.

The seated dinner will be held at the Eastern Flank Battle Park Hall with limited seating. The Franklin Civil War Roundtable is sponsoring the event which will benefit battlefield preservation, the Lotz House and the Tennessee State Museum. Other historians joining Bearss include Thomas Cartwright, Thomas Flagel, Jamie Gillum, Robert Hicks, Stephen M. “Sam” Hood, Eric A. Jacobson, Pam Lewis and Gregory Wade. The evening will include a cocktail reception, an 1860’s period inspired dinner catered by Franklin’s own Suzette with Constant Craving and a program led by Ed Bearss and participation by seven historians as well as a special viewing of Civil War artifacts provided by Jim Hoobler of the Tennessee State Museum. The authors will also have their books for sale and will be on hand for autographs.

This two night event will be held November 29 and 30 at the Eastern Flank Battle Park Hall. The reception begins at 6 p.m. followed by dinner at 7 p.m. and the program begins at 7:30 p.m. Tickets to the “Historian’s Dinner with Ed Bearss” are $150 per person marking the 150th anniversary of the battle. On Sunday, Nov. 30, The Battle of Franklin Trust will once again light 10,000 luminaries at dusk to honor the casualties inflicted during the Battle of Franklin. This year’s event, commemorating the 150th anniversary of the battle, will begin at 4 p.m. and will include brief programs at both The Carter House and Carnton Plantation.

“This event is always one of the most moving ceremonies we perform here at the Trust,” said Eric A. Jacobson, chief executive officer of The Battle of Franklin Trust. “It is difficult to explain the toll of this battle with words alone, and seeing these 10,000 luminaries glowing at dusk really contributes to our understanding of what happened here in Franklin on Nov. 30, 1864. This year promises to be especially profound.”

The ceremony will begin at 4 p.m. at The Carter House, preceded by the tolling of church bells from downtown Franklin. Speakers will include Jacobson and Mayor Ken Moore.

Following the brief remarks, attendees will be encouraged to proceed to Carnton Plantation where a program will begin at 4:45 p.m. Speakers include Carroll Van West, state historian, and Julian Bibb, Heritage Foundation president.

Both houses will be open to the public free of charge from 5:30 p.m. to 9 p.m. Luminaries will be located at The Carter House, along Columbia Pike, and at Carnton Plantation. Luminaries near The Carter House will be arranged in a chaotic design, so as to recreate the battle’s casualties, while luminaries at Carnton Plantation will be organized in their traditional, orderly pattern.

Tourism Means Big Business for Williamson County SESQUICENTENNIAL DRIVING GAINS AT HISTORIC SITES Ellie Chin, Williamson County Convention and Visitors Bureau President & CEO

If the 2013 economic impact numbers are any indication, the power of Williamson County’s tourism offering hasn’t begun to reach its full potential.

Again ranked #6 of 95 Tennessee counties in visitor spending by county statewide, Williamson places just behind larger, arguably more significant markets including Nashville (Davidson), Memphis (Shelby), Gatlinburg/the Great Smoky Mountains (Sevier), Chattanooga (Shelby), and Knoxville (Knox).

Total economic impact of travel expenditures in Williamson County came in at $382.2 million in 2013, an increase of 6.7% over 2012’s numbers.

And the year 2014 has seen a surge, thanks at least in part to the Sesquicentennial of the Battle of Franklin. The Battle of Franklin Trust reports that nearly 100,000 heritage tourists will visit Carnton Plantation and the Carter House this year, and that the majority (almost 60,000) are traditionally from outside Tennessee.

Financial studies provided by groups such as the Civil War Trust indicate that the economic impact on Williamson County and Middle Tennessee from those heritage tourists could be as high as $30 million annually.

New Williamson County Convention and Visitors Bureau President and CEO Ellie Chin, CDME, says that our county’s uniquely diverse offering represents nearly unlimited potential in 2015 and beyond.

Chin answered five questions recently, giving some insight into what tourism means to the community’s future: What attracted you to Franklin & Williamson County, and made it stand out from larger "destination" markets?

One of the reasons I was attracted to Franklin and Williamson County is the unique product mix in the destination. Franklin has done a great job of preserving its past while growing into its future. In addition, the wonderful attractions, such as the three house museums (Carnton Plantation, Carter House, Lotz House) – along with live music nightly, shopping in Franklin, Brentwood and Nolensville and great restaurants – create a package that is very attractive to the visitor.

What does a once-in-a-lifetime event like the Sesquicentennial mean to a community like Franklin?

The Sesquicentennial is a unique opportunity to expand the promotion of Franklin to audiences that we’ve not reached out to before.

The anniversary also gives us an opportunity to showcase our destination to new and returning visitors.

Are we "feeling" the impact, in terms of traffic to the Visitors' Center, sales for Main Street merchants, hotel occupancy, website visits, etc.?

Traffic to the visitor center has increased along with sales of the Battle of Franklin Trust tickets and 150th anniversary merchandise. Many visitors are asking about the activities surrounding the 150th anniversary.

Thanks to the Sesquicentennial Marketing Committee, the 150th Anniversary activities are very diverse – musical events at the Franklin Theatre, Blue & Gray Days and Battle of Franklin reenactments at Carnton Plantation, the Historian’s Dinner with Ed Bearss and more, all culminating with the Illumination on November 30.

How unique of an asset have we built, from your fresh perspective — creating a viable heritage tourism option where it was once thought lost forever?

The story of Franklin’s battlefield reclamation is rich with civic pride. It not only shows the importance of preservation, but it illustrates the care we show about our past and demonstrates what the community can do when we pull together for a common goal.

Battle of Franklin Re-Enactment Set for Nov. 15 and 16 MORE THAN 700 RE-ENACTORS EXPECTED TO COMMEMORATE 150TH ANNIVERSARY

More than 700 re-enactors from across the country will gather at Eastern Flank Battlefield Park near Carnton Plantation on Nov. 15 and 16 to commemorate the Battle of Franklin. The battle was one of the most terrible conflicts of the Civil War and resulted in approximately 10,000 casualties over the course of roughly five hours. Spectators at the re-enactment will be able to watch two separate battle scenarios unfold on Saturday, Nov. 15, and Sunday, Nov. 16. Re-enactors will be encamped on site and spectators will be able shop at nearby sutler locations. There will also be food and beverage for sale. The 150th re-enactment is presented by the Franklin Gun Shop. The grounds will be open to spectators beginning at 9 a.m., and all attendees will need to be on site by 12:30 p.m. The re-enactments will begin at 2 p.m. each day. The event will involve strictly infantry and artillery, and there will be heavy and concentrated fire. Keeping It Real in Brentwood with Jodi Rall November is a month near and dear to my heart. First, I love fall and embrace the turning of the leaves and cooler temperatures.

As we approach Thanksgiving, I always urge my own family to use this time for thanks and reflection; remembering to give thanks daily for all that we are given. No, life is not perfect and for many, the holidays present a challenging time. However, I believe that for every season of life we have to focus on finding something to be thankful for.

Small things in life are sometimes overlooked. As we rush around preparing for Thanksgiving, I challenge you to take time to give thanks for the ordinary people we run into every day. For example, for years the nicest man named Eddie was the butcher at Harris Teeter in Brentwood. Eddie knew what type of fish I liked and my husband’s favorite cuts of meat. He also knew how frugal I am, always looking for the weekly sale items. A few months ago Eddie shared with us he would be retiring at the end of November.

For a few weeks in October I kept looking for Eddie when I shopped and didn’t see him. Sadly, I found out only after talking with the store manager that Eddie had to take early retirement due to some health issues. It made me sad that I would not have the chance to say goodbye and thank him for his years of customer service.

People come in and out of our lives on a daily basis, and often we never find out a name or anything about the person. While my

family teases me about knowing names of people who work at grocery stores and other places I frequent, too many times I feel in this technology-driven world we have lost the ability to connect with other human beings. We simply don’t care; give me what I need and move on. A sad fact, but true.

Something recently that I give thanks for is my Mother. She turned 90 years old on October 19th, and we held a celebration for this milestone birthday. My siblings asked me to write the prayer for the celebration and I will share with you a line from the prayer that you may embrace for your own family: “Thank you for giving us time to spend together today and may these moments be moments remembered forever with a smile.

Lord, I ask you to be present in our conversations as we join in fellowship and laughter, reminiscing about the past and making new memories.”

My wish for all of you, dear readers, is that you will enjoy the month and holiday embracing all around us. The beauty of nature, the presence of family and the bountiful blessing bestowed.

In closing I would like to say Happy Birthday to my youngest son John William as he turns 16 the day before Thanksgiving.

Sixteen years ago he was born three weeks early just after 6 p.m.

We joked I had delivered our very own Butterball turkey as my little bundle of joy weighed in at over 9 pounds, even three weeks early.

Guess you can see why November is such a special time for me and why I embrace all that is loved about the season.

DOG & PONY SHOW Story & Photography by K York The second annual Dog & Pony Show festival was held at Thompson’s Station Park in September. Garrett’s Hero 5k and Fun run started the day’s activities raising money for Duchenne Muscular Dystrophy research. The festival was an all day free family fun event with lots of games for the kids, horse demonstrations, dog agility trials, live music, great food and lots of artisan and craft vendors. Proceeds from the festival also benefit the Thompson’s Station Community Association funding park projects.

Moonshine Hill Inn in Leipers Fork is a country paradise, but when owner Ann Johnson purchased it in 2000, it certainly was not. For several years, she lived there on dirt and plywood floors with only a vision of what it could become. It was not until 2008 that the doors opened for guests, who since then continue to return and remain in awe. It is breathtaking, and Ann says she’s not done, yet.

There is much to see on the 22 acres that is Moonshine Hill Inn. The main cabin sleeps six in its “feels like home” atmosphere. It comes with a fully stocked kitchen, large stone fireplace, Jacuzzi tub, washer and dryer, 2 flat screen TVs and much, much more.

Right out the back door is a grill, fire pit and large patio area perfect for a moonlight musical jamboree. There is also pond full of bluegill and catfish with a relaxing hammock right next to it, a tree house providing beautiful views of the area, a pavilion with a working outdoor tub, and a small cabin that Ann refers to as the “dog house.” Like everywhere else on the property, it’s full of items that have a story. Ann loves hunting for antiques or anything that has meaning. She says everything there has a purpose and adds to the “hillbilly opulence” she is creating.

The room where moonshine was once made still stands and houses many moonshine jars with the names of special guests on them.

Ann is very involved in the Americana Music Triangle and has decorated the moonshine room in memorabilia revolving around it, including a beautiful mural painted by John Turner.

Ann lights up when talking about Moonshine Hill Inn. It is obvious that she loves having a space that can be enjoyed by others. Guests leave notes, letters and gifts for her to find, and she keeps them all. She delights in the fact that many come to stay at Moonshine Hill Inn with full Nashville itineraries but decide to just stay on the property. It is no surprise that the Inn was just voted number one B&B in the Nashville Scene’s Best of Nashville 2014. Even if you are local, it is a must for everyone to experience Moonshine Hill Inn where they are “Bottling memories one weekend at a time!”

Chef Sean has over 20 years of culinary experience cooking and catering while working at some notable restaurants across the country. He entered the Nashville eatery scene as sous chef of Capital Grille inside the Hermitage Hotel and then as a chef for the catering affiliate of Bound’ry Restaurant. While observing the buzz in the restaurant, I saw that each table painted a different picture and told a different story – a retired couple chatting about their grandchildren; a wedding being planned with a bride and wedding planner; business projects being developed; an entire family from patriarch to baby reuniting; laborers coming in for a hearty meal with their co-workers; the list goes on. When I think about soul, I think about a mingling of heritage, cultures, flavors and connections; that is what you get here.

During my visit we focused on the holiday offerings for a seasonal spread: A traditional green bean casserole made with a homemade creamy mushroom base and the sweetness of crispy shoestring onions on top; a light-as-a-cloud and buttery mashed potato served with a brown gravy, and a classic creamy macaroni and cheese that’s oozing with flavor and textures. The green beans were cooked with little kisses of Virginia baked ham. If you like white beans, you will love these that are cooked fresh and slow, leaving them mild and creamy juxtaposed with the salty of a cured country ham. To balance the salty with the sweet, you have a delicious choice of homemade cranberry apple chutney relish and mango pineapple chutney with a kick of red pepper and cayenne. A crowd favorite is the mixed green salad tossed with fresh strawberries and apples and delicious spiced almonds to give it a crunch and kick and finally, topped with a warm, lightly breaded creamy goat cheese cake that melts into the homemade dried cherry vinaigrette.

By Katie Jacobs No matter how you slice it, an old-fashioned pie party is a simple way to gather friends and family to savor the sumptuous holiday season. Not only is pie a staple of the Thanksgiving table, it is a favorite that is beloved year-round. So why not make a party out of it? Just think - a farm table in the middle of the woods covered in all different kinds of pies, wine and cider, and rustic winter decor surrounded by your favorite friends. Are you are starting to picture the wonderfulness a Pie Party can bring?

This past month I hosted a “How to Throw a Pie Party” workshop at Franklin’s Tin Cottage that also served as a launch to the cookbook I styled and photographed, Me, Myself, and Pie by Sherry Gore.

At the event, I shared tips for entertaining and baking while guested noshed on homemade pies and tasted wine from The Bottle Shop. Here are some highlights from the party, a little behind-thescenes that went into photographing the book and a few pie recipes that make my heart swoon.

STYLING MY EVERYDAY PUMPKIN SPICE WHOOPIE PIES WITH CREAM CHEESE FROSTING

As we move into the cooler weather months, a pie party is the perfect get-together for all your family and friends. Host a pie party in your backyard, light a bonfire and carve pumpkins. Or invite friends over to watch the big game and delight everyone with a buffet of pie. Surprise your family with a pie party after Thanksgiving lunch or treat your co-workers to a pie party in lieu of that awkward office Christmas party. There are so many options to hosting this party … and well, who doesn’t love pie?

INGREDIENTS • 2 cups packed brown sugar • 1 cup vegetable oil • 1 1/2 cups pumpkin puree • 2 eggs • 3 cups all-purpose flour • 1 teaspoon salt • 1 teaspoon baking powder • 1 teaspoon baking soda • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract • 1 1/2 tablespoons ground cinnamon • 1/2 tablespoon ground ginger • 1/2 tablespoon ground cloves

Decorate your pie party with candles displayed in mercury glass and incorporate rustic elements like pine cones, acorns, cotton branches, cranberries and pomegranates (all easily accessible and affordable). Feel intimidated by baking ten or more pies? Invite friends and family to bake (or pickup) their favorite pies. You’ll end up with a magnificent assortment of sweet and savory, and maybe even a few new recipes.

Make tags to label different flavors, and be sure to have to-go containers on hand to send leftovers home with guests.

CREAM CHEESE FROSTING: • 2 (8 ounce) packages cream cheese, softened • 1/2 cup butter, softened • 2 cups sifted confectioners’ sugar • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract

INSTRUCTIONS Preheat oven to 350 degrees F. Line baking sheets with parchment paper. In the bowl of an electric mixer fitted with the paddle attachment, combine the oil and brown sugar. Mix in the pumpkin and eggs, beating well. Add the flour, salt, baking powder, baking soda, 1 teaspoon vanilla, cinnamon, ginger and cloves. Mix well.

Using a cookie scoop, drop dough by heaping teaspoons onto the prepared baking sheets two inches apart. Bake at 350 degrees F for 10 to 12 minutes until just set. Let cookies cool then make sandwiches from two cookies filled with cream cheese frosting using a piping bag.

To make cream cheese frosting, in the bowl of an electric mixer fitted with the whisk attachment, cream together the cream cheese and butter.

Mix in the vanilla, then gradually stir in the confectioners’ sugar and beat until smooth.

THE PIE After the party, I surveyed the damage and asked everyone what their favorite pies were. Two seemed to stand above the rest on everyone’s list: Pumpkin Spice Whoopie Pies and Mini Salted Caramel Pecan Fudge Pies.

Whoopie Pies are an old Amish tradition and this pumpkin version is a seasonal favorite no one can resist. The Mini Salted Caramel Pecan Fudge Pies are a combination of chocolate fudge topped with toasted pecans, drizzled in smooth caramel and finished with a touch of sea salt, irresistibly decadent and the perfect addition to your Pie Party or Thanksgiving Day! menu.

MINI SALTED CARAMEL PECAN FUDGE PIES makes 20 3-inch mini pies INGREDIENTS CHOCOLATE FILLING: • 3 cups sugar • 1 1/2 cups (3 sticks) butter, melted • 2/3 cup all-purpose flour • 2/3 cup 100% cacao unsweetened cocoa • 2 tablespoon light corn syrup • 2 teaspoon vanilla extract • 6 large eggs • 20 (3-inch) unbaked piecrust shells TOPPINGS: • 1 bag pecan halves • 1 (13 oz.) bag melting caramels • 1/3 cup heavy whipping cream • sea salt for sprinkling

INSTRUCTIONS Preheat oven to 350°. To make chocolate filling, whisk together first 6 ingredients in a large bowl.

Add eggs, stirring until well blended. Pour mixture into pie shells 3/4 the way full. Bake at 350° for 25 minutes. (Filling will be loose but will set as it cools.)

Remove from oven and allow to cool on a wire rack.

Toast pecan halves on a cookie sheet in heated oven until just fragrant (approx. 5 minutes, do not allow to brown). Remove and allow to cool. Meanwhile, place caramels and cream in a saucepan over a medium heat. Stir consistently until caramel is completely melted. Remove from heat and pour into a measuring cup with a pour spout.

To assemble pies, arrange 5 pecan halves in a spiral design on top of each mini pie. Pour approx. 1 Tablespoon of warm caramel over each pie. While caramel is still warm, sprinkle each pie with a pinch of sea salt.

THE BOOK Earlier this year, I photographed a cookbook called Me, Myself and Pie by Sherry Gore - available now at Tin Cottage and The Barn Door. It consisted of baking, styling, propping and photographing over 100 different pies in less than 5 weeks. I’m pretty sure I have just about baked every pie that exists! Shoo Fly, Blackberry, Derby, Raisin Custard, Lemon Blueberry, Chocolate Chess, Key Lime, Lemon Meringue, Banana Cream … the list goes on and on!

TIN COTTAGE GRAND OPENING Story & Photography Submitted The Tin Cottage, previously a long time historic antique district staple, has reopened in its original location. The celebratory event included light fare and refreshments, giveaways and a chance to see the new merchandise! Attendees also learned more about the Tin Cottage workshop series, which will also center on entertaining within a communal setting. The first event in the series was a Pie Party held in October. Guests mingled with hostess Katie Jacobs, who recently styled the cookbook Me, Myself, and Pie - she baked more than 100 pies in 45 days. Jacobs shared tips, recipes and advice on how to create the perfect setting, and the store offered paired wines with each dessert.

He also enjoys creating something from his imagination. “That is the most rewarding process for me as an artist,” Rex said. “I make something that is truly satisfying just because of the process of creating, and when someone else responds to it or buys it, that satisfaction is multiplied because I have connected with someone else. I feel that every experience, everything I’ve seen, and all of the items I have created are reflected in each new piece that I make. That makes it a deeply personal and fulfilling process.”

FROM THE ARTIST: “I am a graduate of Goshen College with a degree in Fine Arts and Art Education. I have been creating art since I was a child, which led to my pursuit of an art degree and eight years of teaching high school fine arts and music. Early in my artistic development, I joined a family business designing jewelry and have done that alongside my other pursuits. Making functional art in the form of sculptural clocks and lamps is another one of my media. I have shown work in galleries and major museums in Northern Indiana. My eclectic works include painting, sculpture, functional art, murals, and jewelry.”

MUSIC: Honeyboy and Boots After growing up with almost the entire country between them, Drew and Courtney Blackwell were brought together by their passion for music, and the music has led them to Franklin. The duo goes by the name of Honeyboy and Boots and plays a blend of old blues and folk covers, country ballads and originals that are straight from the heart. With Drew on guitar and Courtney on cello, their sound is best described as Americana, folk, alt country blues.

Drew grew up in the small rural Mississippi town of Macon and took interest in music at a young age. At twelve, he was given a guitar and began playing the old country tunes of John Prine, Willie Nelson and Guy Clark. In high school, Drew met local bluesman, Willie King. King taught him how to play, feel and write the blues. Drew played with King for about four years before he passed away. He still has a band that King helped create called the Old Memphis Kings. Drew is the lead singer and that is how he got his nickname “Honeyboy”.

Courtney was raised on a farm in eastern Washington, always wearing boots and loving to dance. Her mom had a love for music and started Courtney on cello at three and a half years old.

She made Courtney practice for an hour everyday and told her she could quit when she was 18. She was a strict mom, but Courtney is grateful for the discipline that resulted in the ear training and technique she has today. She also took private lessons from the cello/bass professor at the University of Idaho. She studied music education and was awarded a scholarship for cello and voice. She was the youngest to audition and be a part of the Washington Idaho symphony, while still in high school. In 2009, Courtney was given the opportunity to move to Starkville, Mississippi, where she taught private lessons and played in the Starkville symphony.

While in Starkville, Drew and Courtney met at a local singer songwriter night and connected through the passion they shared for music. They have now been playing together for about three years and been married two and a half of them. Their backgrounds merge together to make the amazing sound that keeps them constantly in front of crowds all over the South and a bit up North, as well. While touring, they are promoting their current album with songs personal to their story and some fictional story telling, as well. DANCING WITH THE NASHVILLE STARS Story & Photography by K York The 4th annual Dancing with the Nashville Stars fundraising event was held in Liberty Hall at the Factory. Eight celebrity dancers with their partners entertained a sell out crowd to raise money for Feed America First. This organization serves 26,000 families in Middle Tennessee who have to make the tough choices of eating or paying their rent or utilities. The dancers were scored by a panel of judges, and then the audience had the opportunity to vote for their favorite dance partners.

Making a business investment decision in today’s economy is overwhelmingly about reducing risk. As a consumer-driven economy, this is still a very volatile and fragile recovery. Williamson County, as a business destination, provides companies an umbrella of certainty in a very uncertain world. Our message of excellent schools, low taxes, great amenities, corporate housing options, and low crime continues

to register with small entrepreneurs and large corporate headquarters.

As mundane as it sounds, focusing on the fundamentals is what continues to make Williamson County one of the most attractive business destinations in the country.

WHAT PROGRAMS OF THE CHAMBER DO YOU FEEL IMPACT AND BENEFIT SMALL, MID AND LARGE BUSINESSES ON A TRUE AND PROFOUND BASIS AS PART OF THEIR INVESTMENT IN MEMBERSHIP? In our annual membership survey, our members told us the most valuable things we do for their business are connecting them with prospective clients and peer-to-peer networking. We will have hosted over 70 meetings and events in 2014, and the vast majority of those events target small to medium size companies. Our monthly First Friday program is for small business specifically and has sold out most of the months this year. Our new partnership with Premiere Speakers Bureau has allowed us to bring world-class speakers to help educate and inform our members during our monthly membership meetings. Our women in business program focuses on helping women connect and grow and our young professional program went on the road this year and heard how Jack Daniels markets to the world. Those are just a few examples of the many ways we design our programs with one goal in mind, to help our members grow their business.

WHAT DO DESIGNATIONS AND ACKNOWLEDGMENTS SUCH AS THE GARDEN & GUN ­- BEST SOUTHERN TOWN, OR THE MORE RECENT NEW YORK TIMES ARTICLE ON FRANKLIN, DO FOR OUR COMMUNITY? Those designations matter a great deal. For example, even though the Garden and Gun poll was not based on objective criteria, it did measure community support and community pride, things that are very real and powerful, but very hard to quantify. Williamson County and Franklin proved we have the best community support in the south, which matters because companies want to locate in places known for community pride. I particularly like rankings that measure objective criteria, because I can take that information to a company who is considering Williamson County and other locations across the country and show them why we would be a better fit for their company and, most importantly, their employees.

WHAT DO YOU SEE IS THE NEXT PHASE FOR AREAS LIKE BRENTWOOD, NOLENSVILLE, THOMPSON STATION AND FAIRVIEW THAT ARE EXPERIENCING SO MUCH GROWTH AND NEW BUSINESS? I think you are going to see continued growth throughout the six municipalities in Williamson County. I think the corporate office growth will continue along I-65 into Berry Farms and south Franklin and that the Mars investment will continue to grow in Thompson’s Station. I think housing will grow in Fairview along with some sites for advanced manufacturing to bring some additional primary high-wage jobs to the city. I also think housing and the redevelopment of Maryland Farms will continue in Brentwood and housing and more commercial development to service the rooftops in Nolensville will continue. Our big challenge is transportation and making sure we do not become Atlanta.

In discussing the new campus, President Dr. Janet F. Smith explains, “It is a vibrant society for living, working, and playing with an impressive future. The area’s rich educational legacy has created a solid foundation for growth and sustainable development, and the partnerships between business and community strengthen the economic progress of the region. You and I have a vested interest in the success of this opportunity. It is not often that a college builds a college campus from the ground up! It will be a grand time to one day look back and say, ‘We made this happen for Williamson County - We made a difference for others that will extend beyond our lifetime’.”

These are exciting times to be the leader of a growing college like Columbia State. Not only does the future hold a new campus, this year alone has introduced the county to new programs of excellence.

Columbia State was founded in 1966 as Tennessee’s first community college. Since that time, the college has grown to serve a nine-county area in southern Middle Tennessee and has five campuses.

Here in Williamson County, Columbia State’s growth is having a strong economic impact with the new campus set to open in 2016. The expansion has meant increased jobs and in addition, an increase in opportunities for educational programs. The current campus located at the Yates Building was constructed in 1975 and now serves as many as 1,300 students. With the growing need and increased learning opportunities, it is clear why a new, larger campus is needed.

Dual enrollment

The dual enrollment for Williamson County Students has been a major addition and opportunity for young people to take both college classes and work on career development. “Dual enrollment is attracting more students. We need to continue to show value and success of our students,” says Smith. “The opportunity is great to increase awareness and the numbers are growing. One misconception is that credits do not transfer, and this is inaccurate information.” Dual enrollment is a program that allows eligible high school juniors and seniors to begin earning college credit, while they are still in high school. High school students can begin transitioning their thinking from high school thinking to college thinking.

If approved by their school, college courses may also apply towards high school requirements.

COLUMBIA STATE COMMUNITY COLLEGE

WIT Center of Excellence

This past summer, a partnership was formed with Williamson County Schools to develop the WIT Center and is housed at Centennial High School. Through this collaborative effort, the WIT Center will promote interest and training in the IT professions among the young people of Williamson County by hosting college credit courses, summer camps, IT competitions and workforce development training. “There is a huge deficit in the number of qualified employees for the IT industry, particularly in Williamson and Davidson Counties,” said Dearl Lampley, dean of the science, technology and mathematics division at Columbia State. “The concept is to develop a holistic approach to promote IT as a career and to provide that training at the high school level, the college level, and in the workforce.” Centennial High School Principal Lee Webb and Dr. Mike Looney, superintendent of Williamson County Schools, were instrumental in working with Lampley to make this program happen. The primary classroom has 28 iMacs and state of the art software to prepare students for IT careers.

ARRI Alexa Camera

In April, film crew technology students were able to take their film making skills to the next level with the addition of the ARRI Alexa camera. The camera offers the highest technologies in the world. The camera has made a huge impact on the industry that film cameras are no longer produced anywhere in the world. The Alexa has been used to film movies such as “Skyfall,” “Gravity,” “Life of Pi,” “Iron Man 3,” and “Captain America:

The Winter Soldier,” and was utilized in the first season of the TV show “Nashville.” Columbia State is only one of three colleges in North America to use the Alexa to train undergraduate students.

Tennessee Promise

Columbia State is proud to be a school accepting students who receive the Tennesse Promise. Below is some information about this new and valuable program to students in our community and state.

Tennessee Promise is both a scholarship and mentoring program that will begin in the fall of 2015. It will provide students a last-dollar scholarship, meaning the scholarship will cover tuition and fees not covered by the Pell grant, the HOPE scholarship, or TSAA funds.

Students may use the scholarship at any of the state’s 13 community

colleges, 27 colleges of applied technology, or other eligible institution offering an associate’s degree program. While removing the financial burden is key, a critical component of Tennessee Promise is the individual guidance each participant will receive from a mentor who will assist the student as he or she navigates the college admissions process. In addition, Tennessee Promise participants must complete eight hours of community service per term enrolled, as well as maintain satisfactory academic progress (2.0 GPA) at their institution. Dr. Janet Smith is proud of this program and the chance for students attend a “Quality college, making it affordable and receive student services to help them prepare for a four year college, career in the workplace, Columbia State has an ‘array’ of students.”

WHY THE DECISION TO OPEN A SECOND LOCATION IN COOL SPRINGS? “I have lived in Nashville for almost 18 years now. Most of that was lived in Franklin. I have always loved this community, and while I love all the new restaurants coming downtown, I thought there was room for a cool home store with interior design services. This was a wonderful opportunity and fulfilled our need for a second location. It gave us another outlet to reach out to our clients in the area.

Jonathan Pierce has a gift for designing a space that jumps off the page. I met Jonathan in the summer of 2011, while working with a colleague. We started talking about design integrity and how a client should be treated and that conversation led to working together on a small project. Now a few years later, I’m proud to be working along side him and his team still pursuing the highest level of customer service with impeccable design integrity and style of one of the most respected designers in the country. I asked Jonathan a few question about how he came into the design industry and about his new retail showroom in the McEwen center.

WHAT MADE YOU (JONATHAN) GET INTO INTERIOR DESIGN IN THE FIRST PLACE? “When I was a young man growing up in Texas, my parents would often be away during the weekends, and they would always come home to a freshly, designed home. I guess it was something that was in me all along. I’ve personally been designing for over 17 years. I started working for an impeccable interior designer, who taught me the ropes of this field, but as I’ve discovered client by client, they are the ones who have been teaching me the most.”

WHAT MAKES PIERCE & CO DIFFERENT FROM THE AVERAGE INTERIOR DESIGN FIRM? “Honestly, I don’t know. The greatest thing my mother taught me is to compare yourself to no one. Do what you do with great passion and energy.”

It is very important that we make our designs not only aesthetically beautiful, but be practical to their lifestyles as to prepare them for life’s unexpectedness. HOW IS HAVING CLIENTS ON BOTH COASTS HELP YOU STAY AHEAD OF THE DESIGN GAME? Pierce & Co.’s priority is and will always be to cater to the Nashville, Brentwood, Franklin and surrounding areas. In the Spring of 2012, my business partner and I launched Wheelhouse Marketing Advisors with a handful of clients and a desire to run our own business. We’d worked together at a large Brentwood-based ad agency for six years, and when that company abruptly closed its doors, we knew we wanted to continue forward. Sure, we knew starting a business in the middle of a recession was risky, but we had a business plan, a budget, and a unique idea that seemed to make sense. Why position ourselves as marketing advisors? Our approach is different than that of an ad agency.

We help our clients understand the many tools of marketing and help them put the right ones to work for their respective business.

With the launch of Wheelhouse, our goal was to be a trusted and capable marketing resource to our clients. It’s been hard work, and we have many folks to thank for helping us jumpstart our dream. Several months ago, our firm developed this concept for the magazine, while helping a new client brand and launch her new company – why not pen a regular column offering business-related advice, wisdom and insights? Dear Friends, As I have entered my fourth decade in the food industry, I have acquired a new appreciation for what breeds our community’s success.

It is because I have both started and come back to the Franklin area that I have been able to watch the area grow and consider you all my extended family. It is with pleasure that I have accepted the tremendous opportunity to contribute to YOUR Williamson Magazine. I now have the chance to reciprocate the positive impact you all have had on my life and career. Since this is an introduction to you, the readers of YOUR Williamson Magazine, I wanted to share an abridged version of my history with food.

My love for cooking started at the age of six. I was living with my grandmother Linnie Angleine Fraser Deaton on her farm. I learned to pickle and can food, as well as gather eggs and dry fruit, so the farm taught me the importance of fresh ingredients and how that freshness can change a meal. My grandmother taught me how to bake her Five Flavor Pound Cake, which was my favorite recipe as a child. That recipe, and the passing of that knowledge down from generation to generation, sums up everything for me about the power of food.

With the popularity of Recipes from Miss Daisy’s, I decided to write a companion book titled Miss Daisy Entertains to complement the selection of the first book.

The eighties saw several milestones for me: In 1982 we decided to move the Tea Room to the Green Hills area, expanding it to a full-service restaurant that also saw locations in shopping malls and downtown. In 1984, I first appeared on WTVF/ NewsChannel 5’s Talk of the Town program, which has seen me as a regular guest for the last thirty years. In 1985, I edited the Tennessee Homecoming Cookbook, picking recipes featured from other kitchens to help promote the abundance of great home cooks found in the Volunteer State. In 1987, I continued that trend by writing Gracious Entertaining, Southern Style that discusses both making a great meal and presenting it in the way of a party planner. The philosophy “We dine also with our eyes,” is the theme of this book, which fully incorporates the robust traditions each season holds. That was also the same year that I expanded my chefhood past the Tea Room, as

Since then, I’ve had a few exciting adventures in food, but I consider my first to be Miss Daisy’s Tea Room, which opened its doors in 1974. Calvin and Marilyn Lehew, the owners of Carter’s Court, supplied me with endless support and advice. My mission with the restaurant was to honor the rich legacy of Southern food by creating new dishes with an older sensibility. This would prove to be my flagship restaurant, and it introduced me to the wonderful people who live and work here. Guests would feel so at home that I remember them creating their own parking spaces and seating themselves. For many, it was the best of both eating in and dining out, with us making many “Tearoom friends.” Those friends were all the proof that I would ever need that Williamson County is an exceptional place and that I was in the best place possible.

Four years after we opened, the Tea Room recipes were so highly requested by our guests that Recipes from Miss Daisy’s was created.

Marilyn and I had already communicated our love of food with those who visited the restaurant, having created a permanent bond between our tables and those who sat down to them. To us, it only made sense that we share that joy by offering those always asked about recipes – our Creamed Chicken Over Cornbread, Miss Daisy’s Beef Casserole, and our Fudge Pie with Peppermint Ice Cream were in especially high demand. Now, people could recreate the magic of serving someone else these favorite dishes.

It gave us a permanent presence in people’s lives through the little yellow cookbook in their kitchen. In two short years, that book sold 30,000 copies and would eventually sell over a million copies.

co-owener of another Green Hills’ favorite restaurant, F. Scott’s Restaurant and Jazz Bar. The Great Gatsby has always been one of my all time favorite pieces of literature, so I only found it fitting that the restaurant revisit the magic of the Jazz Age, when I helped name it. It also helped that the novel had a character named “Daisy” in it! And though F. Scott’s location recently closed, they have left behind so many wonderful memories.

In 1991, Miss Daisy’s Tea Room closed. The nature of the restaurant business is that it’s a constantly evolving landscape, and I realized that with the closure of the Tea Room that I needed to evolve as well. So I applied what I knew as a business owner and chef, and launched the next step of my career as a food consultant to grocery stores. I am a graduate of Belmont University and had double-majored in food economics and journalism. My passion for teaching was now stronger than ever and that desire to educate consumers saw the beginning of a career in food consultancy that would have me as a spokesperson for Pillsbury, Swift’s Sausage, Bisquick, General Mills, and many others. While representing these brands, I continued to write cookbooks. In 1995, Tennessee’s bicentennial inspired me to pen Miss Daisy Celebrates Tennessee to coordinate with the following year’s 200th birthday of the state. Previous books had swapped the atmosphere of restaurant kitchens with home kitchens but had little focus on history. Since food has played such a vital role in Tennessee memories, the book served as a “taste map” for the various counties that compose our great state. I was pulling recipes from farmhands to governor’s wives, wanting to represent the whole spectrum of Tennessee lifestyles. Appearing on QVC to promote the book, Miss Daisy Celebrates Tennessee would be a best-seller that would win me a “Best of Show” award and a permanent spot in the QVC Hall of Fame. Continuing to write, I have produced 14 cookbooks which hold a combined sales of nearly 2 million copies. This includes the Meet Me at... series of gift-guide books that offer pictorial history with recipes. Locations include St. Simon’s Island, Jekyll Island, the Hermitage Hotel, and the Belle Meade Plantation.

Offering advice and recipes is only a part of who I am. I firmly believe that you have to continue to learn if you wish to teach others. So for the last ten years, I’ve been operating Miss Daisy’s Kitchen which serves Franklin with 150 items prepared fresh daily in the Grassland Foodland. The kitchen extends into the greater Nashville area with our catering to businesses, families, and events. I’m also working on a few other culinary projects, which include a potential web-based cooking program. I have always wanted to match the great quality of life with the quality of food I produce, as well as the output of my efforts to make the area even better. I cannot think of a better way to do this by participating as an ongoing contributor to YOUR Williamson. I invite everyone to my table by providing some of my favorite recipes. I’ll be sharing more recipes online, and each month I’ll be offering advice, hospitality tips, and stories through the print magazine and online magazine launching next month. Following are three recipes that I thought would make your Thanksgiving exceptional with a richness in flavor and history. My Sweet Potato and Orange Cups, Artichoke and Spinach Casserole, and the Jackson Pie each have a major significance to me. I have made so many great memories with each of these dishes, and I hope you will too. ARTICHOKE AND SPINACH CASSEROLE (from The Original Tennessee Homecoming Cookbook, p. 220) 2 10-ounce packages frozen chopped spinach ½ pound fresh mushrooms 6 tablespoons butter, divided 1 tablespoon all-purpose flour ½ cup milk ½ teaspoon salt 1/8 teaspoon garlic powder 2 14-ounce cans artichoke bottoms 1 cup sour cream 1 cup mayonnaise ¼ cup lemon juice Assemble all ingredients and utensils. Cook spinach in saucepan and drain. Sauté mushrooms, reserving several to use as garnish, in 2 tablespoons butter. Sauté reserved mushrooms separately in 2 tablespoons butter. Make cream sauce using remaining 2 tablespoons butter, flour and ½ cup milk. Add salt, garlic powder, spinach and mushrooms. Place artichoke bottoms in 9x13 inch pan and fill with spinach mixture. Combine sour cream, mayonnaise and lemon juice; spoon over artichoke and spinach mixture. Top with reserved mushrooms. Bake in a 350 degree oven for 20 to 30 minutes.

Yield: 10 to 12 servings

BOURBON, PECAN, AND CHOCOLATE PIE (from The Original Tennessee Homecoming Cookbook, p. 227) Writer's note: This pie is also known as the “Jackson Pie” in commemoration of president and native Tennessean Andrew Jackson.

Pierre Franney, food critic for the New York Times, described this as one of the best pies he had eaten.

Just think how good this could be when Robert Hicks's “Battlefield Bourbon” is available.

1 cup sugar ¼ cup butter, melted 3 eggs, slightly beaten ¾ cup light corn syrup ¼ teaspoon salt 2 tablespoons bourbon 1 teaspoon vanilla ½ cup pecans, chopped ½ cup chocolate chips 1 9-inch pie shell Assemble all ingredients and utensils. Cream sugar and butter.

Add eggs, syrup, salt, bourbon and vanilla. Mix until blended. Spread pecans and chocolate chips in bottom of pie shell. Pour filling into shell. Bake in a 375 degree oven for 40 to 50 minutes.

SWEET POTATO AND ORANGE CUPS (from The Original Tennessee Homecoming Cookbook, p. 221) 3 cups sweet potatoes, cooked and mashed 1 cup sugar ½ teaspoon salt 2 eggs ¼ cup butter ½ cup milk 1 teaspoon vanilla Orange half shells Assemble all ingredients and utensils. Mix all ingredients

together and pour into orange halves which have the pulp removed. Cover with topping.

Topping:

1 cup brown sugar 1/3 cup all-purpose flour 1 cup nuts, chopped ¼ cup butter Mix thoroughly and sprinkle over potato mixture in orange cups. Bake in a 350 degree oven for 35 minutes.

Yield: 6 servings

Disciplining and Behavior Management

For many parents, finding and using effective discipline is one of the toughest and most frustrating tasks of parenting. As soon as you have conquered one behavior, sure enough your child has moved onto another one.

Here are some strategies to help you stop unwanted behavior and set boundaries: BE CONSISTENT If mommy’s phone was off-limits yesterday, then it’s off-limits today. If hitting a sibling meant time-out yesterday, then today it shouldn’t be ignored. If you are consistent it shouldn’t take long

for your child to get the message of what is acceptable and not acceptable behavior.

SET LIMITS What are the non-negotiables in your house? Make sure your children know these.

SET THEM UP TO SUCCEED This is especially important for young children. If you don’t want to be yelling “no” at them all day, then don’t put them in an environment where they can’t explore and touch things.

CATCH THEM DOING THE RIGHT THING, AND

In my work I am often asked about disciplining children and behavior management. It is important to remember that discipline is not only about punishment and consequences.

It is also about teaching children to follow rules and understand boundaries.

PRAISE THEM WHEN YOU DO This reinforces the behaviors that you want to see more of. It also just makes for more pleasant interactions.

EXPLAIN WHY For a young child keep this simple, i.e, “We don’t hit.” As the child gets older, explain why they are being punished.

This will help children with reasoning and empathy, if they have hurt or harmed another individual.

BE SPECIFIC Saying “we don’t throw toys” is better than “cut it out.”

At one time or another all parents struggle with discipline.

Parents need to know they are not alone. This is simply part of parenting. If you find yourself frustrated, reach out to other parents you know, your pediatrician, or your child’s teacher. Take time to understand your child, and spend at least 15 minutes a day with them doing something he really wants to do. This will make for more peaceful and meaningful connections. And those sweet moments will get you thru all the tough ones.

DID YOU KNOW? THE AMERICAN CIVIL WAR The Civil War was the bloodiest war ever fought on American soil. On an average day during the war, approximately 600 people were killed.

By the end of the war, over 618,000 people had died. This is more Americans than WWI, WWII, the Korean War, and the Vietnam War combined.

The youngest soldier in the Civil War was a 9-year-old boy from Mississippi.

To a large extent, the American Civil War was fought in cities and farms of Tennessee, as only Virginia saw more battles. Tennessee was the last of the Southern states to declare secession from the Union.

The Civil War was the first war to be immediately reported in the press. The first photographs were taken at the Battle of Antietam.
