A woman with a voice is by definition a strong woman. But the search to find that voice can be remarkably difficult. It’s complicated by the fact that in most nations women receive substantially less education than men. - Melinda Gates

Dealing With

Teens In Love

s a parent you know this day will come but can you truly ever be fully prepared? Dealing with a love sick teen can be a tough task for any parent, and it’s an event that most face with a certain degree of apprehension. You may hope that they’ll find someone that you think is suitable, but realistically you have very little control over who your child finds attractive. Noting that there are no set rules for undertaking what can be a roller coaster ride for any parent, there are however, a few guidelines to help through a possibly trying time. Communicate with your teen Intense emotions and new feelings can make them unpredictable and uncommunicative. Regardless of what you may say or try to do, all that matters is how they feel. Their feelings are sometimes so intense that they may have difficulty coping, and knowing that they have limited life experiences, one of the best things to do is to listen and let them vent their emotions. Their partner might not be what you had in mind but you may be judging from the surface. Take the time to listen and you may understand why they made such a choice. Listening will also be crucial in the case of heartbreak; a soft shoulder and a listening ear can do a lot for your teen in the time of need.

dating and see if it is appropriate for your child. For example, going out to group movies or heading to the Quad or Fiction Nightclub. How will they travel to and from their date? Guidelines have to be put in place to serve as a reminder that they are not yet adults. Safety First Safety has to be considered at all times since the world can be extremely unsafe. Though your child may think you are trying to ruin their ‘rep’ by sending along an older cousin or relative, it is not a bad idea. Note this will however have to change as they get to their latter teens. While you cannot protect your child from everything, it is always good to know their whereabouts, meet their date beforehand and it wouldn’t hurt to also meet their date’s parents. The “Birds and The Bees” Most parents find this very uncomfortable and believe that they don’t need to talk to their teen about sex because of access to the internet and friends. But truth be told, it is because of those influences why you need to talk to your child about sex. Let them hear it from you first instead of having to hear elsewhere. And remember you are the parent and you are responsible for your child’s development, so don’t be afraid to say no if the need arises. Listen to your teen and maintain dialogue with them.

Setting Guidelines Lines of communication play a vital role in teenage dating overall. As a parent, you may need to evaluate whether or not it is appropriate for your teen to be dating in the first place. And if you allow them to date, look at the level of

What Women Men Think: with Fake Eyelashes

relationships

L

ong, full eyelashes were a requisite for female film stars of the early to mid 20th century and men in these films went wild for a coy batting of those eyelashes. Of course, the vast majority of those eyelashes were false and the application of false eyelashes has become more and more mainstream as the years have gone by. The question is then raised, are eyelashes more about the woman than the man, do men really care for them? We put the question to a number of young professional gentlemen.

Jermaine Williams

“I believe it adds to their appearance when done moderately and tactfully just like any other form of makeup. Some persons naturally have longer lashes than others, as such some women need a little more help than others. It annoys me when insecure women go overboard and add obviously long lashes. It seems like they are seeking attention than anything else. It just confirms their level of insecurity and lack of self confidence.” Jermaine Williams Managing Director, Mainwell Enterprise

It can be done tastefully and I can appreciate when it is nicely done as long as it doesn’t seem as if she is trying to float away on the wind.

Neil Buckle

To me it is a bit strange; I don’t particularly like anything fake on a woman. As far as I see it if you have it on when I meet you it is part of the reason I’m attracted to you. If I take you home and you take it off it’s not the same, but to each his own. It can be done tastefully and I can appreciate when it is nicely done, as long as it doesn’t seem as if she is trying to float away on the wind. But I would prefer if a woman does not put on too many artificial things. Neil Buckle Graphic Designer, University College of the Caribbean Gavin Lindsay

I just think that they are overdoing it; after all it adds nothing to their appearance. As a man it’s not as if you see a girl wearing fake eyelashes and say “Wow! I love those lashes?” Gavin Lindsay Investment Advisor, Scoita DBG
