Their easy-going, messingabout-together relationship is one of the reasons they’re so watchable. They’re so natural with each other it’s as if they’re just hanging out rather than on TV. But Holly can do compassionate and serious, too, which is another reason why Phillip was so adamant she became his This Morning partner when Fern Britton left in 2009. “Holly was absolutely the right person to come in,” he has said. “It was tough because I had such a great relationship with Fern, but from the minute she decided to leave, Holly was the obvious choice.”

And as we can all see just by tuning into This Morning, his judgement proved spot on, with both presenters totally at ease whether tackling serious stories or lighter topics.

“We do change gear on This Morning’, but I think we’ve got it down to a pretty fine art now. It takes a while to get used to, but that’s why I love it so much.”

Unbelievably this year, Phillip (50),

celebrates 30 years as a TV presenter.

At 19, he and his family emigrated from Cornwall to New Zealand and he started presenting a children’s music show on New Zealand TV. Returning to the UK in 1985, he joined the BBC as a continuity presenter from his ‘broom cupboard’ with the help of Gordon the Gopher. From there, he went to ‘Going Live!’ on Saturday mornings. He’s been a fixture on our TV screens ever since, apart from a period in the Nineties when he was starring in the smash hit musicals Joseph and the Amazing Technicolour Dream Coat and Dr Doolittle.

Known affectionately as Pip and The Silver Fox, with reference to his shock of silver/white hair, by his legion of fans, This Morning is just one of his jobs.

He also presents Dancing on Ice, cult game show The Cube plus he hosts the annual National Soap Awards’ taking place later this month. His image is that of the clean-cut, Mr-Nice-Guy – something which Phillip says is not necessarily indicative of the real him. “It makes me sound dull and anyone who knows me will say that’s not the case,” he has said.

Away from the cameras Phillip’s biggest passion is his family. “The girls are getting older and the amount of time that they want to spend with their parents is going to get less and less, so we take whatever days we can when we’re all together.”

That includes a good summer break. “It probably goes back to growing up when I had summer holidays in Cornwall – I loved the sun and the sea. I never forget quite how lucky I am to be able to take a month off in the summer.”

Roasted Pesto Cod and Mediterranean Vegetables ✢ 4 baby new potatoes (halved) ✢ 1 tsp olive oil ✢ 1 small cod fillet ✢ 1 tbsp pesto ✢ ¼ pepper (chopped into bitesized pieces) ✢ 2 cherry tomatoes (halved) ✢ ½ courgette (sliced) ✢ ½ onion (sliced) To serve ✢ Salad leaves

Prawn Stir Fry

1 Preheat the oven to 180°C/350°F/ Gas Mark 4 and roast the baby new potatoes in olive oil for 15 minutes.

2 Add the cod fillet, spoon over the pesto and add the pepper, cherry tomatoes, courgette and onion.

3 Cover with foil and roast for a further 25-30 minutes – removing the tin foil 10 minutes before the end of the cooking time. Serve with a green salad.

✢ 50g (2oz) rice noodles ✢ 1 tsp sesame oil ✢ Low-calorie spray ✢ 1 chilli (finely chopped) ✢ ½ clove garlic (crushed) ✢ Small, thumb-sized piece of ginger (finely chopped) ✢ ½ red pepper (diced) ✢ 50g (2oz) broccoli florets ✢ 1 spring onion (sliced) ✢ 40g (1½oz) peeled raw prawns ✢ ½ pak choi (chopped) ✢ 1 tbsp soy sauce ✢ 1 tbsp sweet chilli sauce ✢ 1 tbsp sherry

✢ DATES AND CRÈME FRAÎCHE Slice up 2 dates and mix with 2 tbsp of low-fat crème fraîche, sprinkle with a few flaked almonds

1 Cook the rice noodles according to the package directions. When tender, drain and toss in sesame oil.

2 Heat some low-calorie spray in a non-stick frying pan and cook chilli, garlic and ginger over a high heat for 30 seconds.

3 Add the red pepper, broccoli florets, sliced spring onion and prawns. Cook for 3-4 minutes until the prawns have turned pink. Add the pak choi and the noodles.

4 Stir in the soy sauce, sweet chilli sauce and sherry. Heat through and serve immediately.

Warm Chicken Caesar Salad

1 Brush the chicken breast with olive oil and cook in a non-stick pan, turning once, for 15-20 minutes until cooked through. Leave to rest for 5 minutes, then cut into slices.

2 Place the asparagus into the pan you cooked the chicken in and stir fry in a little olive oil until tender.

3 Toss some lettuce leaves, cherry tomatoes and chives with dressing. Arrange on a plate and top with warm chicken and asparagus and shave over Parmesan cheese.

It really does. Beau, my 12-year-old daughter, caught me smoking in the garden last summer and fled back into the house in tears. I’ve been smoking since I was 19 and tried and failed about 15 times to quit. Beau thought I had given up. Smoking is a proper addiction but with the help of my GP I managed to quit several months ago. Beau was the real reason I gave up.

I think I’m going to have a 50th birthday bash next year. It’s about time I stopped pretending; I’ve been saying I’m 40 ‘la-la’ for years!

I still feel about 30 inside and I don’t think I’ll ever feel any different.

WHAT MADE YOU WHO YOU ARE TODAY? Not having a father. Overcoming that feeling of shame motivated me most. Most of my life I wanted to be accepted and liked and I became sensitive to other people’s feelings because of that. You can’t act if you can’t empathise, so it turned out to be the most useful albeit the most difficult experience to understand.
