Sarasota art goes abroad You’ve likely seen the works of artist Jorge Blanco around town — his Bravo! statue adorns the roundabout at Orange Avenue and Ringling Boulevard.

He’s been in Sarasota for some time — primarily working as a sculptor but occasionally an illustrator — but a new audience is about to enjoy his work as well. Two of Blanco’s illustrated pieces will be on display at the International Exhibition of Humor held in Bordighera, Italy through Aug. 28.

The theme for this year’s exhibition is “The World of the Automobile: Today and in the Future” and as such Blanco illustrated a piece depicting a man about to sprint across a busy street.

The case of the missing plaques The Circus Ring of Fame Foundation has been removing the plaques on St. Armands Circle — which recognize circus icons and titans throughout the years — in batches for routine cleanings. The plaques are meant to last several years before cleaning and restoration, but constant UV rays can cause early damage.

The funds for the cleanings came from circus luminary Herta Cuneo and the Community Foundation of Sarasota County.

Foundation Chair Bill Powell says the plaques will be reinstalled this September.

Thousands of students said goodbye to the summer life on Wednesday and headed back to class on the first day of the 2022-23 academic year. Without masks and other COVID-19 protocols from years past, the first day looked like many others.

“It’s my sincerest belief that when students leave our school district, they will be confident that they have the resources, experiences, and opportunities needed to pursue their own unique futures as a result of the educational foundation they received in Sarasota County,” Superintendent Brennan Asplen said.

The

City commissioners next week won’t hear a developer’s plea to overturn a decision by the city’s Historic Preservation Board to deny demolish of the 100-year-old Mira Mar building on Palm Avenue.

An agenda item on next week’s City Commission meeting has been deleted. Tenants of the building said they’ve been told the developer seeking to redevelop the site is no longer interested.

In June, Sarasota’s Historic Preservation Board unanimously rejected Seward Development’s request to knock down the Mira Mar building to make way for a project that would include 70 condominiums and a two-story retail building.

Seaward Development had pleaded to take down the building citing structural issues.

The Mira Mar building was built in 1922 and over the decades has been updated, renovated and rebuilt.

Some see it as a historic property that harkens back to Sarasota’s early boom days.

Seaward officials agreed with that sentiment and said their plans for the property would be true to the original design while modernizing it and addressing structural issues.

But Patrick DiPinto, Seaward’s managing partner, argued that can only be done if the current building is brought down and rebuilt. He said knocking it down won’t affect the historical import because what people see today was a “remake of the original. The building was 60%, 70% rebuilt in the ’80s.”

Clarification

The Sarasota City Commission awarded to grant for about $286,000 to the St. Armands Circle Association for the purchase of a new Christmas tree. The organization, along with the St. Armands Business Improvement District, the St. Armands Residents Association and the Lido Residents Association, supported the grant request, said Rachel Burns, executive director for the St. Armands Circle Association. A story in the Aug. 4 edition of the Sarasota Observer incorrectly identified the organizations involved.

County candidates raise issues Development, attainable housing at the top of the agenda in Commission primaries.

W

hen Sarasota County voters cast their ballots in the Aug. 23 primary election, they will select the finalists in two of the five single-member districts that comprise the

County Commission. Voters in Districts 2 and 4 will see new names on the ballot as Chairman Al Maio of District 2 and Commissioner Christian Ziegler of District 4 rotate off the board.

It marks the second single-member district election since voters in 2018 approved the new representation in countywide referendum, in which only residents of the district elect their representative.

County commissioners serve staggered four-year terms and are subject to a limit of two consecutive terms.

District 2, which for the most part covers the city of Sarasota, has three Democrat and two Republican candidates. District 4, which cuts a swath across the middle of the county, bordered roughly by State Road 72 to the north and Venice and North Port to the south, has one Democrat and two Republican candidates. One primary winner from each party will advance to the Nov. 8 general election. Unopposed candidates will advance automatically.

DISTRICT22 DISTRICT FREDD ATKINS (D) Age: 70 Occupation: Realtor, substitute teacher, nonprofit CEO Previous government service: Former Sarasota city commissioner, former Sarasota mayor.

A former mayor and city commissioner, Sarasota native Atkins saw the opportunity to serve countywide thanks to county voters upholding single-member districts earlier this year and a redrawn District 2, after he says he was drawn out of the former District 1 before the 2020 election.

He said he hopes a successful campaign will encourage more city and county residents to get involved in government.

“I think one of the most important things is I’m going to bring the Commission back to the people,” Atkins said. “We have, over the last 50 years, less and less people participating in the process. They have taken not only referendums and not only skewed them, they’ve taken the power away from the people and tried to keep making it more and more difficult to get issues on a referendum. They’ve taken referendums we’ve passed and disrespected them.”

Atkins said the county has altered its comprehensive plan in favor of developers, disregarding public participation in what the future of county should be, and suppressed opportunities for workforce housing.

“Attainable housing is the primary issue as it relates to how we are going to survive the developments in Sarasota County,” he said. “We need to get not only inclusionary zoning, we need to get developers participating in correcting the ills they have created in our community because they can make a difference.”

Responsibility for environmental issues such as red tide, Atkins said, lie at the feet of the county.

“The county has made the citizens of Sarasota County suffer for over 40 years with wastewater treatment,” he said. “The county has not implemented the eradication of septic tanks near tributaries, waterways or sloughs and they are contaminating the bay. Our problem with fecal matter in the bay is the county. We are also we were having problems with seepage of all the other runoff the county has.”

Brody said he is hoping to make the leap from City Commission because the issues the community faces are “broader than just the city limits.”

“I think we have come a long way since I was first elected, and we’ve accomplished a lot, but I think it’s important to take a broader view of these areas, and so the county is a natural step to do so. I ran as a change candidate for the City Commission.

That’s what the community wanted, and I think that’s what the county wants as well.”

What needs changing? Brody said there is a disconnect between the County Commission and the residents, particularly in the area of growth and development and the lack of attainable housing.

“Smarter growth policy is very much in demand by our residents,” Brody said. “I think I am the only candidate in my primary being attacked by local developers in the mail. I can take a lot of what I’ve learned in the city and bring that knowledge to the county of how to get some changes made.”

His five years as a City Commissioner, Brody said, provide him with an understanding of the nuances of government service.

“I think it’s really important to have elected officials who stand up for communities they feel are under attack. As a commissioner, I’ve really taken that responsibility seriously whether it’s mailers, anti-Semitic flyers that are being dropped in our neighborhoods, some of them homophobic, anti-LGBTQ issues.

It’s important that people have someone in these positions who will speak up for them and stand with them, and I’m committed to that.”

A regular speaker at both Sarasota City Commission and County Commission meetings, typically offering criticism of policies that favor developers over residents, Cosentino describes himself as a candidate who will work for the people. Although a city matter, he calls Sarasota’s proposed comprehensive plan amendments working their way through Tallahassee a “developer giveaway.”

So what can he do about that as a county commissioner?

“As a county commissioner, perhaps I would have more weight sitting in front of the City Commission because it would be peer to peer at that point,” Cosentino said. “The whole thing is getting the developer influence out of our government and just having a government that works for the people instead of works for the developers.”

As development pressures continue to move into southern Sarasota County, Cosentino said lessons learned in the city and in the north county can be applied in the south as Venice and North Port development encroaches on rural areas.

“When you look at what’s happening down south, it’s actually a larger scale of what’s happening all over Sarasota County. Our government generally subsidizes the millionaire developers,” Cosentino said. “But now they’re subsidizing the billion-

aire baseball team owner, which was the catalyst that kicked everything else off (in North Port). It makes all the surrounding property now get rezoned commercial.”

Cosentino said he believes overdevelopment is not inevitable and smarter growth is feasible.

“I do not understand the race to become the next Miami Beach. Why can’t we just be a good mid-sized community with a high quality of life?” he said. “Do you think they could put a big hotel in the middle of Nantucket or Martha’s Vineyard?

They have a vision, they write land development regulations and they follow them. It’s that simple.”

Frustrated by what she said is overdevelopment and under-representation, Ramirez said the County Commission is beholden to the development community and not residents of Sarasota County.

and they listen to one person, the one who gives them the most money.”

She said the transition to singlemember district representation can be a step in the direction to change that.

“Maybe countywide voting makes sense if you had less than 100,000 people in the county, but we’re at 400,000 people, and it’s obvious to me that the county commissioners don’t even know who they have in this in this county, much less in their district.”

Although District 2 is largely Sarasota the city, Ramirez said she is aware of the growth challenges in south county, adding that for too long the emphasis on developing the infrastructure has been focused on the north.

“I see a lot of infrastructure being put in place in northeastern part of the county, all surrounding Lakewood Ranch and UTC, but I don’t believe there’s enough effort on the people in North Port and Venice,” Ramirez said. “Why does it take so long for the county to address the south county when it comes so easy for them to find money for all this development out east, like Lakewood Ranch Boulevard, where there’s not a lot of people living there? … They have to look at amenities that are missing down there. You can see where the county is biased, where they’re putting the money.”

Smith pointed toward his daughter as an example of lack of affordable housing across the county. With a good job making a decent living, she lived at home while looking for a home to purchase. Giving up, she moved out of state.

“We’ve got to tackle that one, which is challenging considering construction costs and land costs right now, but people who work here can’t live here and that’s been a problem for a long time. But I believe we need to really tackle that, whether it’s inclusionary zones or what the county is working on to develop 750-square-foot starter apartments that are counted as half density in order to get the impact fees lower and make them affordable.”

Smith advocates concentrating new housing along existing infrastructure to the extent possible, employing adaptive reuse of vacant or underutilized commercial centers, particularly in the growing south county cities.

“The 2050 plan has a lot of good aspects of how growth should go out east to maintain the environment and make it as fiscally feasible as possible. … But if you put the workforce housing way out of town you defeat the purpose of it. The goal is to get workers as close to work as possible.”

voting presents a “golden opportunity” for some new faces on the County Commission.

“A lot of the reason why I jumped in is because many of the issues that are happening around Sarasota County are tied to the way the commission has worked with developers over the years,” Kuether said. “The developer community has had a lot of sway over the commissioners, I believe, over having really effective residential and commercial development.”

It’s a lack of control, Kuether said, that results in environmental issues that can have a lasting impact on the county.

“We are kind of missing the natural push and pull that the commission needs to be doing, and that’s caused the issues in affordable housing, access and infrastructure not holding up to the population boom, as well as some of the effects that we’ve seen on our environment,” he said.

“We’ve allowed variances on our environmental guidelines, and now we’re suffering the consequences in things like red tide.”

The influence of developers, Kuether said, will not be enough for the county to build its way out of the current affordable housing crisis.

Citizens have good ideas, he added, but they’re not being received by county government.

“People are just not being heard,” Kuether said. “The current County Commission holds public forums to check off their boxes, and they’re not really using them as they’re intended, which is to help find some compromises between the neighborhood organizations, the citizens and the developers. That’s how we get ourselves into a county that kind of functions better for everybody.

It’s by really listening some of these compromises and forcing some concessions from the developers.”

Hawkins is a lifelong resident of District 4. And he says he knows a thing or two about home construction and workforce housing, expertise he’d like to bring to the County Commission. The county, he said, has created its own workforce housing shortage by straying from its comprehensive plan, forcing workers to live far and wide and commute to employment centers from North Port, Myakka or even St. Petersburg.

“The truth is we have no workforce housing program going in Sarasota County right now. We have to have housing for the people who work here, not just the people who are retiring,” Hawkins said. “I’m a general contractor, and I can tell you if they let me put a couple of houses on a regular lot, I can build a house 1,200 square feet for a $200,000 and the land’s only going to cost $50,000 or $75,000 and I can sell that for $300,000 to $325,000. That’s workforce housing, and we could do that starting tomorrow if we wanted to.”

Providing workforce housing is one thing. Serving it with infrastructure is another. Hawkins said the county is lacking in roadway and utility upgrades and expansion to handle the strain on the transportation and sewage systems today, much less in the future as explosive growth trends toward south county.

“We don’t even have enough infrastructure to handle what we have now,” he said. “Our wastewater treatment plant was outdated 15 years ago and can’t handle the dark water coming out of it, so they’ve been pumping that into Philippi Creek and that causes red tide and kills sea grasses. We haven’t done a good job of taking care of what we have built. We we need a northsouth corridor from Lorraine Road all the way down to North Port and we just haven’t been doing that.”

Vice Mayor Kyle Battie floated the idea of the city acquiring the property via imminent domain. City Attorney Robert Fournier confirmed that approach is feasible, providing its reuse is of public benefit, such as a park or affordable housing. Short of a forced sale, Commissioner Hagen Brody said the city has the ability to enhance the value of the property to perhaps entice U.S. Recycling to be a willing seller.

“The greatest power that we have as a local body is through our zoning.

We can make a piece of dirt worth a lot depending on what you can do with it,” Brody said. “I truly think the long-term solution has to come through change of use, and zoning to transfer the property.”

With no clear solution immediately apparent, commissioners unanimously agreed on: n Entering into negotiations with U.S. Recycling about acquiring the property or about rezoning the property to make it viable to sell. n Drafting a letter to Sarasota County requesting a greater level of inspection and enforcement. n Directing staff to explore ramifications should the city request enforcement authority be delegated to the city, and n Explore ordinances that could restrict hours of operation.

he worlds of industrial and residential land uses are colliding in the Central Cocoanut neighborhood, where for half a decade residents have complained about the byproducts of U.S. Recycling, a construction and demolition recycling company.

Residents in the historic neighborhood came to the Sarasota City Commission on Aug. 1 meeting to discuss vibrations from dump trucks and jackhammers, trucks driving through the neighborhood and clouds of dust.

It’s a tale of multi-jurisdictional havoc, with the city of Sarasota having the least leverage. During her presentation, Commissioner Jen Ahearn-Koch, who has been meeting with residents, company representatives, and county and state officials on the issue for some two years, cited county inspections taking place when the most noxious activities were idle.

What the city is doing is requiring a wall built around the 137,754-squarefoot site located at 1404 Industrial Court. That will hide some of the activities from view, Ahearn-Koch said, but will do little about the noise and dust. The city is also planning to repair and pave Industrial Court.

Residents pointed out they were there long before U.S. Recycling, where activities begin early in the mornings and continue into late evenings, on weekends and even holidays. Leadership of U.S. Recycling, Ahearn-Koch said, were involved in meetings early on, but have since deferred to legal representation.

Commissioners individually agreed the living conditions around the site are untenable while also wondering aloud about the city’s authority to resolve the matter. By right the company can operate on the site and environmental and health matters are the purview of the state.

here is a reason they say you should not change horses in mid-stream. The same is true for a well-run organization.

When it is operating well, you don’t throw the leaders out.

Sarasota Memorial Health Care System is this community’s largest singular economic driver, its largest employer, its most consistently mentioned factor for attracting new residents, and — most importantly — a source of world-class care.

That is why it has been so startling lately to read what The Observer writes about its board.

While on the one hand recounting the unprecedented accolades and successes overseen by the current board and system CEO David Verinder, even during the unprecedented challenges of the last 2 1/2 years, the editorial commentary — and, most recently, the endorsements in the upcoming hospital board elections — seem fixated on change.

The logic goes something like this: When a board comes to nearunanimous agreement on critical decisions, the decisions (or at least the decision-making process) must be questionable.

Joe DeVirgilio, Jim Meister, Dick Rehmeyer, Daryl Henry and Greg Carter have all demonstrated the kind of leadership that the Sarasota Memorial Health Care System and the citizens of Sarasota County need and deserve.

This is no time, and there is no need, to change the majority composition of this nine-member board. We already have the right people leading this enterprise.

The argument against the proposition that the board agrees too much so it must be doing something wrong is right there in the public records.

With regard to Mr. Verinder’s compensation and contract: Without criticizing any prior CEO, it is clear the system’s consistent financial stability began in 2014, the year that Verinder became CEO. Further, the programs and services provided to the community have advanced beyond all previous achievements of this historically great health care system.

The certification of the trauma center; the establishment of graduate medical education; the opening of the SMH-Venice; the planning for the SMH-North Port; the much-needed replacement of the Behavioral Health Center; the

expansion of outpatient services; and the creation of the Brian D. Jellison Cancer Center — all of these happened under the strategic direction of this board and Verinder’s executive leadership, most within these board members’ most-recent term.

The process for setting Verinder’s compensation and his contract tenure is also criticized, but the minutes of the Board’s Governance Effectiveness Committee show that the process was robust, was informed by market data from outside consultants and involved substantial debate and discussion including healthy disagreement and compromise.

That eight of nine, or even nine of nine, elected officials can come together is not a failing of an elected board. It is a triumph of good governance.

With regard to the SMHCS response to COVID-19: In the coming weeks, Sarasota Memorial will reach the sad milestone of caring for its 10,000th COVID-19 patient.

There has been an unfortunate politicization of the issues around vaccines, treatments and policies related to COVID-19. Reviewing the Sarasota County Public Hospital Board minutes, though, it is clear that the board kept its focus on patients, not politics.

While the entire vaccine issue has been hopelessly politicized, the board tried to incentivize, rather than mandate, staff to take the vaccine to keep team members healthy and patients safe.

With regard to the other candidates, the main question for me is: Why haven’t any of them gotten involved with Sarasota Memorial governance before?

I strongly encourage you to vote for Joe DeVirgilio, Jim Meister, Dick Rehmeyer, Daryl Henry and Greg Carter. Let’s keep the team that got us here together.

After Tom Edwards declared he is working for woke-ism, he triggered questions about Lauren Kurnov.

T

he emotionally intense revolution engulfing much of the United States over what is being taught in public schools brings to the fore, at last, the inevitable failure of taxpayerfunded, state-run education.

It is now a war. And, unfortunately, this war is going to rage well beyond this election cycle.

These are the spoils: Who is to control the minds of our children?

Will it be the politicians in the statehouses or the unionized teacher-class, whose mostly liberal members, unbeknown to parents, have been infusing their personal ideologies into their prey?

Here in Florida and in Sarasota County, the two sides are clearly defined: n The Republican-backed Sarasota School Board candidates are siding with the Tallahassee politicians who passed laws that require schools to communicate more with parents; and give parents more access to what is being taught and offered to their children. At the same time, they are siding with new laws that impose politically driven requirements on how educators are to teach civics and history. n On the other side, largely Democratic, are an unknown number of parents, leftist and liberal teachers and members of the LGBTQ and woke classes who abhor the influence of state mandates.

They want the freedom to teach what they believe should be taught, the way they want to teach. At the same time, many of them embrace wokeness — infusing into students the cultural issues of gender, critical race theory, systemic racism and the historical sins of America.

Pick your poison: State politicians or the liberal educ-class.

Two weeks ago, we recommended two of the three Republicanbacked school board candidates, incumbent Bridget Ziegler and Timothy Enos — Ziegler because

RESIDENCY QUESTION Patient advocate Patricia Maraia is running for a seat on the Sarasota Hospital Board. She lives in Bradenton, where she and her husband own a home.

They have lived in Bradenton for the past 17 years.

But since 2016, the Maraias also have owned a home in Englewood.

Maraia told the Observer she and her husband changed their voter registration to Sarasota County and plan to move permanently to their Englewood home if she wins.

of her steadfast support for parents rights and a freedom agenda; and Enos because he is a respected law enforcement veteran who knows what school systems should be doing to protect our children.

The third race is more complicated — between Robyn Marinelli (Republican) and Lauren Kurnov (Democrat).

We previously recommended Kurnov. And we did so on the basis she repeatedly insists she wants to eliminate politics from the school board. What’s more, we supported Kurnov because, at 43, she represents a younger generation of civic-minded Sarasotans. We need more of her generation moving into leadership roles.

Nevertheless, the question still lingered. She declined to reveal to us her politico-philosophical beliefs on the cultural issues. We gave her the benefit of the doubt.

But as always in election season, unexpected events occur. Which brings us to Sarasota School Board member Tom Edwards.

Edwards aligns politically with the liberal left. That is fine. But when he declared at a forum last week that he is “woke” and “we’re working from the inside,” his comments triggered alarm.

He went on to say there are insider coalitions forming to protect teachers from state politicians’ rules. “People are coming to fix

this,” he said.

If he and other woke Democratic school board members around the state are working to win control, where is candidate Kurnov on that?

We queried Kurnov once again. In light of Edwards’ comments, Sarasota County voters would benefit from knowing where she stands on specific cultural issues.

Kurnov’s responses are below.

You, the voter, can reach your own conclusions on whether Kurnov would side with woke-ism or abide by her words against politics.

This is clear: Kurnov repeatedly is explicit about vowing to focus on what’s best for students. At the same time, her responses decline to say specifically whether she agrees or disagrees with the new state parental rights law.

She acknowledges the gender identity issue is likely to come before the board. She says the board should provide options to “parents and students that make sense for their families.”

Now weigh that against Kurnov’s opponent. Robyn Marinelli doesn’t mince. She supports the parental rights law.

For Sarasota voters, this is a dilemma: One candidate who declines to engage in the politics that has riled voters; the other who has stated explicitly her stand.

Two weeks ago, we gave Kurnov the benefit of the doubt. With

EDWARDS DECLARES HIS WOKENESS Sarasota County School Board member Tom Edwards declared at a public forum last week that he is woke and “working from the inside.”

Edwards made his comments during the question-andanswer period at the end of a forum entitled, “History in the UN-making,” at the Fogartyville Community and Media Center in Sarasota.

Sponsored by a new Sarasota-based nonprofit, Support Our Schools, the forum addressed educators’ concerns about the new standards being required of them when they teach civics classes.

Here is what Edwards said: “I just wanted to give a little reassurance that here in the state of Florida, there are school board members that are woke. We’re here. And we’re working. We have your backs.

“You need to know we have your backs. And we’re working in the best strategic spot because we’re on the inside.

We’re working from the inside.

“From my point of view, I’ve spent not quite two years to earn credibility and to earn trust. That is a long, slow process.

“But I’m not the only one in the state of Florida, and I need to tell you, so that you feel a little better. There are coalitions forming to protect you.

To stand up because — what I know about education, you can put in a thimble — but what you accept, you teach.

“And that’s what’s happened here in Florida is that a lot of the machinery has accepted all of the standards, all of the things, all of the next laws, all of the processes, and all of the teachers and all of the administrators and all of the superintendents have accepted that.

“And we’re forming that we are not accepting that anymore. So keep doing what you’re doing. And we have your backs. And people are coming to fix this.”

Kurnov addresses positions on new parental rights law As a general response to your inquiry, I want to make clear I am my own person. I didn’t run for public school board to participate in partisan exercises.

I’m running for office because my kids are in our schools, I have a background in education and at this moment I’m interested in making sure every kid in our county has the best shot at a bright future.

This means making choices that make sense for our community and that provide our kids with a great education. I believe that means creating a school district where everyone feels included and accepted, and for me that does not mean advancing partisan agendas.

I identify with Sarasota parents who are interested in seeing their kids get a great education, have the ability to go to college or learn a trade and build a successful life.

Q. New state law prohibits school districts from adopting procedures or forms that prohibit school personnel from disclosing information related

to a student’s mental, emotional or physical health or well-being to parents, or that encourage students to withhold such information. Agree or disagree?

I’ve said from the beginning of my campaign that I want to take the politics out of our school board.

This means the school board needs to be laser focused on student success and career readiness.

In my view the school board needs to spend its time ensuring our students have a well-rounded education that is supported by a thorough curriculum so our students can read; perform math at grade level; have an understanding of history and social studies; are exposed to the arts; and learn physical skills to keep them healthy throughout their life.

The school board also needs to invest in wrap-around services to help support students who need additional time with subject matters; need to catch up from COVIDcaused learning loss; and to ensure career readiness. Any time the school board invests in fighting legislative changes is a poor use of time and is not something I will engage with on the school board.

Q. The new law prohibits classroom instruction on sexual orientation or gender identity in kindergarten through grade three or in a manner that is not age-appropriate. Agree or disagree?

I believe school board members need to work directly with parents to set standards about when and how to introduce concepts around sexual education, identity and orientation that make sense for our community and our kids.

Our schools should be spaces where all students feel safe, accepted and supported.

Given the very profound way this issue impacts students and families, it’s likely [to be] one of the more important issues the school board will address. It’s a topic on which the school board should welcome robust feedback and provide options for parents and students that make sense for their families.

I’m not interested in fighting legislative directives; I’m interested in working with our community to get to outcomes that help our students learn and build a successful future.

Q. The new law requires parents be notified of all health care ser-

vices offered at their student’s school and given the opportunity to individually consent to or decline each service. Schools may not administer a wellbeing questionnaire or health screening form to a student in kindergarten through grade three without first receiving consent from the student’s parent. Agree or disagree?

As a parent I want to know everything that is offered to my children, be it in the school health care facility, classroom, remedial or advanced education opportunities, all the way down to what equipment is on the playground so I can tell them to stay off devices on which they might get hurt.

It only makes sense that parents know what health care services are offered. In the K-3 space, parents should absolutely be involved in any health care decisions or questions given the extraordinary amount of development that takes place physically, psychologically, emotionally and educationally in this phase of a person’s life.

On the school board I’ll work to make sure parents are involved in any health care decisions about their children.

BIG MAC ATTACK 1:44 a.m., 700 block of South Washington Boulevard Police were called to a fast food restaurant by a customer who wanted a refund for a remotely ordered meal that could not be filled because of the hour. A restaurant worker told the officer he could not allow the customer inside the building once it closed for the night, and therefore could not supply the refund. With the officer present, however, the worker said he could give the refund, and the customer, with cash and receipt in hand, left the premises without incident.

REPOSSESSION RETALIATION? 9:16 a.m., 1200 Block of North Washington Boulevard A woman whose car was repossessed is alleged to have retaliated by damaging vehicles at the car lot that reclaimed the car for nonpayment. Police responded to the used car lot to investigate damage to multiple vehicles, which included two broken windshields and 37 slashed tires, totaling approximately $11,300. Two owners of the lot told police they believed the person responsible had threatened previously to damage vehicles and reached a civil settlement when vehicles were in fact damaged. The suspect’s car was repossessed on July 25.

AERIAL ASSAULT 10:03 a.m., 5000 block of Royal Palm Avenue A case of gravity versus mischief brought police to a vehicle whose owner complained of a large pine cone landing on the hood while traveling on Royal Palm Avenue.

The victim said she heard a loud bang on the hood and immediately stopped, claiming she then heard what she believed to be the closing of a sliding door at a nearby condo building. Dash cam video captured the trajectory of the strike, leading the driver to believe it was thrown from a nearby balcony. Police spoke with the resident of the condo, who was at work at the time, lives alone and had no company. Video also confirms there was nobody on the sidewalk at the time of the incident.

The officer reports that the cone likely fell from a tree, although no video evidence exists to confirm.

Fire helps shape region’s ecosystems

F

ire, as result of lightning, is one of the primary natural forces that shapes Florida’s ecosystems, and is critical for the health of 78% of Myakka River State Park. And the Florida dry prairie, a globally imperiled ecosystem endemic to Florida, is the largest fire-dependent community in the park.

Fire is essential for the proliferation of diverse native flora and fauna in the Florida dry prairie, the second most biodiverse ecosystem in North America. Myakka’s dry prairies were species-rich prior to 46 years of fire exclusion, which began in the mid1930. At the time, the Civilian Conservation Corps, which built the park, instituted a no-burn system, maintaining that all fires were bad.

Alteration or suppression of fire leads to significant changes in a firedependent ecosystem. For example, many fire-dependent species aren’t able to thrive in the dense vegetation which forms in a fire-deprived habitat. In fact, during the years of fire exclusion, many native species, including the federally threatened crested caracaras, were not observed residing in the park.

Caracaras, largely dependent on the open, treeless habitats of the dry prairie landscape, are important, yet increasingly scarce, yearlong residents of Florida dry prairies.

The loss of the Florida dry prairie and its inhabitants would mean the loss of an important natural community that would never exist on Earth again. Therefore, a focus of Myakka’s Florida Park Service staff is the restoration and maintenance of the park’s extensive dry prairie, with prescribed fire being an important tool in this process.

Prescribed fires are planned burns, where fire is intentionally, and safely, lit. In addition to variables such as temperature, humidity, wind, and vegetation moisture, burn plans have to consider factors such as conditions for smoke dispersal, and

he town has been overrun by Gremlins. The White House has been obliterated by aliens.

A plane is coming in for a night landing with no experienced pilot on board.

Or something like that.

For eight weeks this summer, the improv cast of Florida Studio Theatre’s “We’re Doomed” will improvise a disaster movie on the spot.

They’ll come out and ask the audience to vote on a title, and then they’ll make up their roles and the plot to fill the 90 minutes quip by quip. No two shows are the same, but they’re all rooted in the same discipline.

“Some days, I’m not going to be the queen of the show,” says cast member Sarah Durham. “Some days, I’m going to be the D plot and I have to be OK with that. But once you’ve done it for a while, it’s just as fun to watch your teammates succeed and get those big laughs as it is for yourself to get the big laugh.”

and he says the hard work is done before they ever step on the stage.

The cast participates in a brainstorming exercise called the Genre Cauldron that helps them appreciate what they each think is funny in a given situation. They’re building rapport, an understanding of how and why these movies work on our psychology. The unifying thing about disaster movies is that we watch them because we’re rooting for the characters to beat the odds, and Luera says that’s because we see ourselves in each of the roles they play.

“I think in these movies that have

heavy archetypes, whether subconsciously or consciously, you’re placing yourself in there,” says Luera.

“Who would I be in this situation?

Am I going to be the protagonist?

Am I the overthinker? Am I the cynical character? The crazy conspiracy theorist? Am I the love interest or am I the follower? Am I the villain, the one that’s causing this? I think it’s very easy to watch these and find a character you bond with.”

Dale, was recently a member of the FST summer intensives, and she worked on scenarios just like this with Luera as her instructor.

Now she’s a full-fledged cast member, and for Luera, the show is a natural extension of his work with improv actors of all levels.

The format of “We’re Doomed” is simple. Every night, the cast comes out and asks the audience to vote on a title. Then they perform it, no questions asked, without huddling or even whispering in each other’s ear.

That’s the art form, and it doesn’t matter what title you’ve suggested; they’ll find something funny in it.

“Sometimes the audience comes up with a title that maybe doesn’t sound like a disaster movie. Then it’s up to us,” says Luera of a night at the improv. “If the title is, ‘Planting Flowers With Mom,’ OK, we’ll take it.

If you vote for it, we’ll do it.

“We’re not going to milk anything more out of the title. We’re not going to ask you to change anything. But we will turn that title into a disaster movie.”

After they have the title, they’ll start with a “wide shot,” which allows the cast members to introduce each other and to subtly take cues about where the story is going.

If you watch closely enough, you can see their wheels turning as they each figure out their role.

That’s part of the magic; the cast doesn’t know where they’re going any more than the audience does.

They’re listening for the collaborative signals their fellow castmates are throwing down, and they’re adding details to the theatrical stew with every sentence.

“Once we all kind of find an overlapping space, then within that we start to play,” says Luera. “There’s a certain tension and releasing of tension that is important for disaster movies.

“If you look at the Poseidon Adventure, you’re still 25 minutes into it and they still haven’t had the

New Year’s Eve party. You’ve got to build up to that moment when everything goes wrong.”

Anything can go wrong. Frequently, it’s the thing you least expect.

That can be liberating for a performer. But it all unfolds so quickly, and it can get away from the actors if they’re not careful. In this case, a key improv skill is restraint.

“If we create aliens and tidal waves, and we create a building that’s burning down, and we create a hostage situation, we have to solve all those problems,” says Durham of the unintended consequences.

“The more problems we create, the harder it is to actually have a narrative through-line. Otherwise, we’re just trying to figure out how to take on each adversary thrown our way.”

The performers, whatever role they play, have to wear a lot of hats.

Literally.

Durham said she played seven different characters in one Halloween show, each of them signified by a different item of clothing. One of them wore glasses, and another wore a hard hat or a letterman’s jacket.

That’s all part of the fun. But since this is a disaster movie, it’s a cast that requires fleshing out. The audience frequently gets enlisted in these shows, and they have to be just as quick on their feet as the cast.

That’s not a problem because most of them have imagined escaping their own Titanic.

“I think that audiences are a lot more intuitive than we give them credit for,” says Luera. “If you just set up the right space, they’ll jump right in. If we need extra soldiers to fight the zombies or extra zombies to fight the soldiers, they’ll jump right in. They’ve never failed me.”

Bradeen says she had a line on local rabbit from a farm in Ocala at one point, but they couldn’t provide the volume she needed.

Now she sources the meat from rabbit farms out West and in Wyoming.

“Rabbit around the world is a very sustainable animal. It’s vegetarian and prolific,” she says. “It’s actually a great source of protein. I think we’re just not so used to it here in America, which is a shame because it has a lot more flavor than other white meats.”

Bradeen, a graduate of Pine View School, adds a Japanese-style curry to the meat. There’s blended turmeric, cumin, ginger and black pepper in the curry, and then it’s all served in a homemade fried wonton taco shell.

The result is a perfect mixture of flavors and textures, with vegetables, meat and curry all in one bite.

“It’s not super spicy,” Bradeen says of the curry topping. “It’s more that turmeric, pepper and ginger flavor in the curry itself. So it’s nice and mild, but still flavorful.”

Bradeen has been cooking braised rabbit tacos since she opened up on Main Street downtown Sarasota in 2007, and the dish’s staying power comes down to a subtle sleight of hand. Bradeen is cooking a meat you may not have eaten.

But you don’t need a fork and knife.

“It’s important when you’re serving something like rabbit that’s a little bit unusual that you put it in a form where it can be approachable,” she says.

“Everybody loves a crunchy taco.”

What makes a good hot dog?

Andrew Mincieli was born and raised in New York and knows the answer . . . for him, anyway.

“I love a good hot dog with tomatoes and onions,” he said. “A Sabrett hot dog with a natural casing so that when you bite into it, it almost snaps at you.”

But outside of New York, finding such a dog was tough. Mincieli started buying ingredients and trying for homemade success with little luck.

Recently, he found a better solution at Doggystyle restaurant in downtown Sarasota, founded by Connecticut native-turned-Sarasota resident Steve DiBio. The year-old spot has one hook: Its menu highlights styles from specific regions. That includes Chicago, Philadelphia, Texas, Kansas City and, importantly for Mincieli, a New York dog. “(The New York hot dog) was

exactly what I was used to,” Mincieli said.

DiBio has been keeping track of the hot dog recipes for years. Following his time as a minor league baseball player, DiBio jotted down each recipe and variation in approach. He’s

been collecting those notes for three decades, but only recently decided to put that knowledge into effect when he opened his restaurant.

Red onion sauce? That’s a New York thing. Southerners like mustard, chili and cole slaw — though DiBio notes West Virginians often add onions while Georgians removes the chili to make it a slaw dog.

Memphis dog shops use bacon, barbecue sauce and onions. And one area of the country that DiBio won’t name likes to eat their hot dogs with barbecued macaroni and cheese.

“We wanted to give (tourists) here a little taste of home,” DiBio said.

“People say it’s difficult to find good pizza; it’s also just hard to find a good hot dog.”

DiBio’s family grew up in the culinary world — he started working in restaurants when he was 14 growing up in Connecticut — but his path to accumulating hot dog recipes came from a different place.

He started traveling in the minor leagues where he played pitcher in 1989.

That took him around the country, and DiBio felt like seeing what the different regions he visited had to offer when it came to food.

“I had a hankering for a hot dog (while in the Carolinas), but it was just disappointing,” DiBio said. “I started questioning where I could get a good hot dog … a lot of places just had plain old boiled hot dogs.”

As DiBio went from town to town, he noticed a contrast in how people went about their dogs and an even more granular schism in whether the meat or toppings were championed.

Some areas such as the Carolinas, for example, could have any kind of hot dog meat but rely heavily on toppings. Other places prized the type of hot dog being served.

“Where I was from, the hot dog was king, but people would top theirs differently,” DiBio said. “There, no one would know what dog they were eating but the toppings were eccentric … I ask people if they grew up with the hot dog or they grew up with the topping.”

Dakota DuBois, originally from Massachusetts, has missed the New England style of hot dog since moving to Sarasota two years ago. He’s been able to get a taste of home since randomly walking into Doggystyle.

“The outside of a New England style bun is like bread that can be toasted, it’s not a bulky, round exterior that you find in Publix,” DuBois said. “The meat that goes into it just tastes better than what goes into a typical Oscar Meyer. I’ve been missing it; it’s what I’m used to.”

DiBio chalks up much of the variation and influence of recipes and styles across the country to cultural impact from immigration.

“If you grew up in an industrial area with jobs and immigration, you had 1,000 years of European food culture dropped on your doorstep,” DiBio said. “New York, Chicago, Philadelphia, Newark, immigrants came with a built-in customer base and supply chains were built to feed all these people.”

He doesn’t see Florida having much of an innate hot dog culture — he says the biggest immigrationbased contribution to Florida’s food culture is the Cuban sandwich — but he has noticed barbecue sauce becoming more and more popular.

Many visitors have come from the Midwest — Chicago and Michigan especially — but DiBio has noticed a greater influx of northerners who have asked for their own unique recipes as the months have gone on. And that’s to say nothing of the vegans.

“The hot dog, in some ways, was dying (culturally), but we’re tacking in a different direction,” DiBio said.

“People think it’s interesting.”

Traveling circus pays a visit T he Loomis Bros. Circus returned to Sarasota for a weekend of popcorn, cotton candy and classic fun from Aug. 5-7.

Hundreds gathered at the Robarts Arena at the Sarasota County fairgrounds throughout the weekend to enjoy the show.

Each program kicked off with families and kids enjoying clown acts, drinks and popcorn and even getting into the center ring to go on horse and camel rides.

The audience then sat down to enjoy a show led by ringmaster and founder Justin Loomis, who welcomed a number of performances and attractions that included jugglers, motorcyclists, aerialists and even appearances from lions, elephants and camels.

or the last few years, the Sarasota High football team has appeared poised to make “the leap.”

The Sailors have made one leap already, from a bottom-feeder to a competitive team with a handful of game-changing players. That’s progress. But the Sailors aren’t satisfied with that. They want more.

“This year we are looking to break through and make it to the playoffs and be one of the better teams in the area,” Sailors coach Brody Wiseman said at a Suncoast Media Days event Aug. 6 at The Mall at University Town Center. “We have been on the cusp of doing that the last few years.

We just haven’t had everything that we need. We have worked hard in the weight room and in bringing our kids together. We’re hoping this is the year.”

Many teams talk about togetherness, but the Sailors are putting it into action. Wiseman said he arrived at the media day event directly from the conclusion of an overnight lockin the program had conducted.

The idea of the lock-in was for everyone team to get to know their teammates beyond surface-level facts — and get in some quality football practice, too, under the midnight stars. Wiseman said this group is already playing more as a team than any Sailors group he’s had in the past.

The biggest obstacle the 2022 Sailors will have to overcome is the loss of starting quarterback Lance Trippel, who graduated.

Trippel threw for 1,936 yards and 20 touchdowns in 2021. His replacement appears to be sophomore Alexander Diaz, who quarterbacked the school’s freshman team last season. Diaz, who is 6-foot-2 and 230 pounds according to MaxPreps, looked impressive in video of the program’s spring jamboree against Manatee High. Diaz will need to improve his decision-making under pressure a bit, but he showcased a strong arm and an ability to make throws to all areas of the field. He’s done enough this summer at various camps to earn an offer from the University of Tennessee-Martin, a fine feat for someone who has yet to take

The Cougars have more talent this year than they have had in several seasons, but depth at smaller schools is always more of an issue than it is at bigger schools. With many of the team’s best players playing on both sides of the ball at least some of the time, any injury hurts the team twice as much. If Mooney manages to stay healthy, the program appears primed for big things.

n year two under coach Jared Clark, the Cardinal Mooney football team improved from 2-7 to 7-4 thanks to continuity and the development of young players.

In year three, there’s a feeling that further development of Mooney’s core could lead to a special season.

“We’re going to have an experienced team, and I am hopeful that will pay off for us,” Clark said. “We’re excited to get this thing rolling.”

That feeling doesn’t come without some question marks. Like many teams in Sarasota and the surrounding area this season, Cardinal Mooney is forced to make a change at quarterback after the graduation of a starter, in this case, Tayven Clark who made things happen through the air and on the run.

Following in Clark’s footsteps will be junior Johnny Antonucci, the backup quarterback a season ago, but also a free safety in the defensive secondary for the Cougars, showcasing his athleticism and his willingness to help the team.

At a Suncoast Media Day event Aug. 6 at The Mall at University Town Center, Clark said Antonucci would stay after practice last season to throw 100 passes and keep his arm sharp. That extra work is now paying off, Clark said.

“He’s got a big arm and he’s got a lot of talent around him,” Clark said.

“I’m excited to see what happens.”

That talent includes junior Carson Beach, the 5-foot-11 running back who gained 624 yards (4.8 yards a carry) and scored 11 touchdowns in 2021. He showcased both quickness and an ability to fight for tough yardage. Beach’s body of work, and his performance at camps this sum-

mer, earned him scholarship offers from Tennessee and South Florida.

With a newcomer at quarterback, it would not be a surprise for Beach to get a lot of work early in the season as the offense finds a rhythm. This year, Beach is listed as a running back/ wide receiver on Mooney’s MaxPreps roster, so it is possible that the Cougars also line him up wide.

This could give Lennard High transfer Zeshon Casimir, a junior who appears set to start at safety, some carries at running back as well; Casimir ran for a touchdown in Mooney’s spring game against Island Coast High.

The rest of Mooney’s receivers are talented, too. Even though Mooney lost leading receiver Ryan Matulevich to Venice High, the Cougars return senior Cooper Flerlage, who caught 31 passes for 477 yards and five touchdowns. Flerlage is a big body at 6-foot-4, 195 pounds, and he can run, making him a threat all over the field. He’ll be joined by, among

others, sophomore Chris McCorkle, who caught 28 passes for 496 yards and five touchdowns in West Virginia in 2021.

The offensive line will be led by senior Ian Parker, who at 6-foot-0 and 240 pounds will be stepping into the left tackle role as well as being one of the team’s vocal leaders.

“We’re embracing the expectations,” Parker said. “We have been working our tails off and we are not letting anything get to us. All that hype is poison. We are not going to let it get to our heads. We’re going to go week by week and see how far we can take it.”

There is a lot to be excited about on offense — and Clark is. But Mooney’s defense might be even more impactful than its offense. Junior defensive back Teddy Foster joined the football team after three games last season and used his pure athleticism to not just earn playing time, but make a real impact. His talent has caught the eye of colleges and Fos-

ter is now one of the fastest-rising recruits in the region, picking up offers this summer from Tennessee, Indiana, Rutgers, South Florida and Florida International. Casimir and McCorkle will also see major minutes in the secondary.

In front of them, the team’s five leading tacklers all return. That group is led by senior JR Rosenberg, who had 108 tackles (71 solo) at linebacker in 2021.

On the defensive line is senior Jack Mackinnon, who was second on the team with 80 total tackles and led the Cougars with 19 tackles for loss and 10.5 sacks. Junior George Leibold, a hybrid linebacker/lineman, had 65 tackles. Junior Jacob Brown, a linebacker, had 59. Senior Kyle Cooke, a defensive end, had 54 (and 4.5 sacks).

The Cougars allowed 20.4 points a game in 2021; thanks to Mooney’s amount of returning and new talent, do not be surprised if that number is even lower this season.

that acts as the soul of the Sailors roster. Marchbank had 55 tackles in 2021 including 22 tackles for loss. He also led the Sailors with seven sacks.

He’ll be playing on the offensive line and doing some long snapping this year as well, but the defensive line should continue to be his strongest spot. He’ll be joined by senior Armando Morales, who had 37 tackles and three sacks.

Schedule-wise, the Sailors have as difficult a road as they typically do.

Under the Florida High School Athletic Association’s new Metro/Sub-

urban classification system, Sarasota is in the Suburban 4 Class, in a district with Riverview High and Venice High, two traditional powers in this area of Florida. Among other tough games, the Sailors play fellow Sarasota teams Booker High and Cardinal Mooney High and end the season with a trip to Braden River High, a Manatee County power who expects to be strong again this season.

But the flow of the schedule could allow the Sailors to get off to a fast start — 4-0 is not out of the question — before getting into the meat of the schedule, which is always an advantage. If Sarasota does start well, and can pull one or two upsets in the second half of the season, getting back to the postseason is possible.

Sailors senior Caleb Bradley, who was a 300 meter hurdles finalist at the state meet, will play wide receiver and defensive back for the football team.
