Sarasota County resident Kyle Rinaca of Boy Scout Troop 23 recently claimed that title and was recognized Aug. 1 with a proclamation congratulating him for his service.

Rinaca has helped the Sarasota Police Department with outreach projects like movie nights, parades, back-to-school events in Gillespie Park and Newtown and more.

He also has done some undercover work. If you enjoyed the McGruff the Crimefighting Dog mascot at the annual Suncoast Offshore Grand Prix, that was Rinaca in the costume.

During his Sarasota vacation last year, there was one moment 12-year-old Will Byrer couldn’t forget.

Byrer, who has autism, visited the Rise and Nye’s ice cream and coffee shop, which employs people with intellectual and developmental disabilities. The shop’s owner Beaver Shriver gave Byrer a “future employee” pin for the next time he visited.

Byrer and his family returned to Sarasota this summer from their home in Ohio, and on July 27, the “future employee” traded in his pin for an apron and got to work. He even helped close up the shop at the end of the day.

Interim principal named at Booker

Cameron Parker will start the school year as acting principal of Emma Booker Elementary, initially working with outgoing principal Edwina Oliver.

Parker has been an assistant principal at Booker Middle, an interim assistant principal at Laurel-Nokomis School and an interim assistant principal at Fruitville Elementary in addition to a teacher at Alta Vista Elementary.

She holds degrees from Stetson University, University of West Florida and National Louis University in Tampa.

“I am excited to serve as the acting principal of Emma E. Booker Elementary School,” Parker said in a school district news release.

“My focus at each school I’ve had the pleasure of serving at – including another part of Booker Nation, Booker Middle School – has been to maximize opportunities for student growth and success as well as family engagement. I look forward to getting to know everyone and continuing to grow the school’s special connection with its students, families, and the community at-large.”

ll remaining no-swim advisories have been lifted for Sarasota County beaches, the Florida Department of Health’s county office said this week.

The beach at Siesta Key was among those originally posted with no-swim advisory signs, though the shoreline reopened for swimming by late Friday.

Beach inspection teams reported a wrack line of decaying algae around the rocks and along the shoreline. Wrack lines, which provide food for shorebirds and wildlife, act as natural bacteria

reservoirs. Additionally, rainfall runoff likely washed accumulated pollutants from the land surface into waterways.

“When these bacteria are found at high levels in recreational waters, there is a risk that some people may become ill,’’ said DOH-Sarasota Environmental Administrator Tom Higginbotham. “People, especially those who are very young, elderly or who have a weak immune system that swallow water while swimming can get stomach or intestinal illnesses.”

aving chugged its way 18.5 miles from the Venice Train Depot to Fruitville Road, further construction of the multimodal Legacy Trail project toward the north has been derailed as negotiations with Seminole Gulf Railway have apparently jumped the tracks.

During last week’s Sarasota City Commission budget workshop, Public Works Director Doug Jeffcoat said negotiations with the railroad to colocate the last 4.3 miles of the trail from Fruitville Road to University Parkway near Sarasota-Bradenton International Airport have stalled, and completing the trail will likely require an alternate plan.

With the railroad having declined to sell its track for the trail, talks had been underway to explore sharing the right-of-way for the completion of the trail to the planned northern terminus. Jeffcoat said recent requests by Seminole Gulf had become untenable, and as a result the city is exploring alternatives.

“One of the things that you have to understand with regard to what’s the difference between what the county has been able to do, and what we have to do for this north section, is the outright purchase of the property from the railroad,” Jeffcoat said.

“They’re not willing to sell the property to the north, so we have to enter into a lease agreement-type thing that gets us into some legal issues.

They have all the power. … They are refusing to enter into certain agreements that we would need related to environmental and things of that nature.”

And there’s more.

“The latest conversation was they want us to pay for replacing the rails,” Jeffcoat said.

The southern portion of Legacy Trail was built on unused former CSX tracks, which Sarasota County acquired from the company. Seminole Gulf intends to keep its seldomused tracks north of downtown for future operations, Jeffcoat said.

Although removed from an area just north of Fruitville Road, the railroad’s tracks still exist from around Aspinwall Street north into Manatee County. A Y-junction is in place just north of Eighth Street, sending a spur across U.S. 301 parallel to 10th Street and the main line north alongside the eastern edge of U.S. 301, crossing through Newtown and on into Manatee County.

Pivoting in a new direction, City Engineer Nik Patel said, has presented new opportunities for Legacy Trail, though.

Rather than a single artery to University Parkway along the railroad, planners are exploring more of a capillary system to connect multiple points both east and west to an urban trail network through neighborhoods such as Newtown that completes the trail northward.

As a bonus, Patel said, “The amount we would spend if we did do some sort of deal with the railroad, you’d spend essentially half of that doing three different trails to connect the parks, schools and the colleges, and the airport. You could do multiple routes where people have options as to which route they want to take.”

Sarasota city commissioners have earmarked $6 million from Surtax IV, the fourth edition of the successive 15-year, 1-cent sales tax that is up for voter approval in this fall’s general election. One of main issues is that such funds are not permitted to be used to lease land. Purchases of land or materials are permitted.

include the Trust for Public Land, FDOT, Sarasota County and all of the county’s municipalities.

The greatest benefit of a reworked trail plan would be providing accessibility for more communities to the Legacy Trail.

“Different people will have different routes to get to where they want to go, connecting to the airport, the colleges and the parks,” Patel said.

“Connecting to The Bay is going to be really critical. We’re trying to find multiple routes to have the urban trail feed to all these critical components where a lot of activity happens.”

In addition to spurs that could provide connections to Newtown, Bay Park and more, likely is a link to the planned nature park at Bobby Jones Golf Complex, which includes a nature trail that is on a statewide trail plan, possibly qualifying it for state and/or federal grants.

County leaders have spoken about linking Nathan Benderson Park to Legacy Trail, potentially through an eventual connection at Bobby Jones.

Beyond that, a proposed overpass of Interstate 75 south of the park into Lakewood Ranch opens up more possibilities, potentially even a link to a series of trails proposed by Manatee County.

County Commissioner Christian Ziegler even noted the possibility of a triathlon that could make its way from Lakewood Ranch, into the park for the swimming portion and then head out on a Legacy Trail link for the cycling portion.

Legacy Trail’s newest segment turns to the west at Beneva Road, about midway between Bahia Vista Street and Fruitville Road, with the Bobby Jones complex not far away.

Between that point and a potential link to the future nature park at Bobby Jones is Circus Trail Nature Park, which could one day connect the two. An existing portion of the Circus Trail already runs alongside Circus Boulevard between Beneva Road and the Bobby Jones entrance. It’s also a key piece of Sarasota County’s plan to connect the trail system to Nathan Benderson Park.

An urban trail would provide a different experience from much of the Legacy Trail built along that former CSX right-of-way, but it would still function similarly.

“I think we’re going to be using our roadway systems and repurposing the roadway to separate the bicycles and pedestrians from the roadway,” Patel said. “We need it to have a trail feel as opposed to just being right next to a roadway.”

In March, Legacy Trail Segment 3 opened to Fruitville Road in downtown, running near Payne Park along the way. Under way is a “complete streets” project to convert one traffic lane of Ringling Boulevard in each direction into bike lanes between Lime and Pineapple avenues.

The $2.4 million Ringling Trail project will link Legacy Trail and Payne Park to the downtown core, and to the barrier islands beyond perhaps a model of more urban trails to come in lieu of the original railroad route.

Still, the goal is to terminate the northern end of Legacy Trail at the airport, some 22 miles north of the Venice Train Depot. Further county development of the trail south toward North Port also is under way.

“One of the routes we’re looking at being adjacent is Old Bradenton Road, somehow connecting that to University Parkway and the airport,” Patel said. “But, we’re still in the early phases and we’ll be evaluating any alternatives in that area.”

Mayor says proposed city budget has opportunities for savings With the maximum millage rate set, Sarasota Mayor Eric Arroyo suggests prioritizing cuts over drawing down reserves to balance the 2023 plan.

ver the course of two days last week, the Sarasota City Commission heard from the city manager, director of finance and department heads about why the proposed fiscal year 2023 budget included expenses for 25 additional personnel, infrastructure improvement and replacement, and an enhanced level of government services, An increase of $6.4 million in general fund revenues, largely prompted by $3.65 million more in property taxes — 9.82% more than in the current fiscal year’s adopted budget — was welcomed news.

But not for everyone. The increase in general fund spending of $7.5 million to $85.67 million, leaving a deficit of $3.17 million in expenses to revenues, didn’t sit well with Mayor Erik Arroyo and Commissioner Hagen Brody, both of whom expressed concerns about deficit spending and drawing down reserves to balance department budgets.

Both Arroyo and Brody joined Commissioner Jen Ahearn-Koch to approve reducing the maximum millage rate from 3.712 to 3.0 — the final rate will be set when the budget is adopted in late September — but suggested department heads fell short on controlling costs when preparing the proposed budget.

“What I’m hearing from the commission is that there is a desire to not lower the millage rate but there hasn’t been any discussion regarding opportunities,” Arroyo said. “What I hear is some want to just adopt what’s been presented, not everybody but some, but there are some

real opportunities I believe to save some money and lower this gap that we have.”

To close the general fund gap, the proposed budget transfers the $3.2 million from the general fund balance, which at 32.5% stands at well above the city’s policy of 17-25% of budgeted expenditures, leaving $27.8 million by the end of fiscal 2023. City Manager Marlon Brown called it an intentional drawing down of the fund balance to bring it more in line with city policy and state and bond rating guidance.

Brown and Director of Financial Administration Kelly Strickland said the $3.2 million gap is the result of the recommend millage reduction and a $1.6 million transfer to the Bobby Jones Golf Complex debt service, an enterprise fund that, once operational next year, is expected to be self-sustaining.

More than the general fund, though, there are expense-to-revenue gaps in the proposed Enterprise Funds budgets — such city services as Water and Sewer, $535,181; Van Wezel Performing Arts Hall, $2.92 million; Solid Waste Management, $1.3 million; and Parking Management, $161,546, for a total of $8.06 million combined. All told, the city’s proposed projected revenue of $233.28 million is $18.9 million short of its proposed spending of $252.18 million. Of that additional spending, $1.4 million is in new personnel.

The proposed budget hedges against anticipated population growth to bolster future revenue with increased property values brought by pricey real estate that is planned or already under construction.

“I don’t want to look at this budget as desperation or as a budget of opportunity,” said Vice Mayor Kyle Battie. “There’s population growth that will be coming down the line. I don’t want to get to a point of robbing Peter to pay Paul where we’re hoping for what tomorrow will bring to take care of us today, but there’s a number of projects that are in development, maybe 700 to 800 multimillion dollar condominiums, that

When reserves in enterprise and other funds continue to be depleted, he added, eventually those shortfalls will hit the general fund.

“Do we want to go down this road of increasing staff, only to have to undo it in just a couple of years?”

Arroyo asked. “Would it be worth it just to have two years of whatever we’re trying to do to find that the population has not grown as much in proportion to the expenses that are that are increasing?”

Brody also advocated holding the line on personnel, specifically citing three additional SPD officers on top of the 10 already approved, and the request to expand the city’s public information office from two to three.

“It’s like a death of 1,000 paper cuts because I’ve heard this expla-

nation, I can’t tell you how many times, about it only being this much this year. That stuff adds up year after year after year,” Brody said. “My budgetary philosophy is we should be putting money away, adding to fund balance when times are good, which we’ve been doing, and save that for the dips so we can maintain city services when there’s a recession and when revenues dip below what we have.”

Alpert joined Ahearn-Koch in supporting the personnel requests despite differing on the millage rate.

“I’m uncomfortable with the budget gap, but my approach would be different,” Alpert said. “I think that if Mr. Brown and all the departments are asking for these new people, they aren’t asking just because they think it would be great. They’re asking because they feel they need these people.”

Budget discussions will resume with a public hearing Sept. 7 and conclude Sept. 20 with a final public hearing and adoption.

“We have a great fund balance it’s healthy, there’s nothing wrong with having a strong fund balance. Everybody keeps saying we’re coastal city, I get all that. But on top of being a coastal city and needing to have enough money to recover from a major disaster, you can have a fund balance that can supplement your revenues in the event of a couple of years of a downturn. … And I think of the workers that could be in jeopardy of losing their jobs during that time. … I can only imagine what it is like having to cut people’s livelihoods in the middle of a recession or increasing taxes in the middle of a recession.”

City seal design contest yields five common themes As Sarasota seeks to update its official city seal, commonly recurring design elements of nature, water, sunset and the Ringling Bridge come to the forefront.

f Sarasota is to dream large, the city’s official seal, and maybe eventually its logo, should reflect those ambitions. That’s the consensus among the Sarasota City Commission, which received a report containing nearly 200 city seal contest submissions from citizens and others during a meeting on Monday.

After more than 2,500 responses to a community survey and 172 seal submissions from the public, Dream Large, a Sarasota-based benefit corporation, presented to city commissioners five preferred new city seal design concepts, plus its own composite synthesized from the most common elements: nature, water, sunset and the Ringling Bridge.

Dream Large conducted a public engagement process from June 1 to mid-July, which generated clear recurring themes, said Sarasota Government Relations Manager Stevie Freeman-Montez. On Monday, Dream Large presented all the seal submissions, highlighting five favorites selected by a 12-member panel, seeking guidance from commissioners on the next steps.

In November 2021, commissioners authorized the city to enter into a $25,000 contract with Dream Large to reimagine the current, rudimentary seal. The company took the process to the public with a survey and the design contest. Applications of the seal may include marketing and branding materials, signage and official city documents.

Sarasota has prospered, and commissioners were clear about removing that verbiage.

“When you think about brands, your brand is what people say about you when you’re not in the room,” said Dream Large founder Anand Pallegar. “In the general public, I think there was a little bit of learnings about the history of the seal versus the logo, and so what we really aimed to do was to focus on the seal and solicit public input, drive a

design process with the community, and produce outcomes.”

Pallegar then offered a forecast of future engagement.

“We will get to the logo next time around,” he said.

Commissioners did identify other submissions beyond the five panel selections, but seemed to find consensus on one that breaks the circular mold — an image of the iconic tower at Ca’ d’Zan, the Mediterranean revival mansion on Sarasota Bay built in the mid-1920s by John Ringling. The tower is wrapped by a sunburst above stylized “City of Sarasota” lettering.

Commissioner Hagen Brody suggested that submission may be more appropriate as a logo.

Three of the five favorites selected by the panelists are highly colorized designs, the two others monochrome, the latter suggested as

more practical given reproduction capability over a variety of mediums from street signs to letterhead. Four of them evoked images of the bridge between downtown and Lido Key, one updating the verbiage to “Prospering Since 1902.”

Dream Large also produced a composite design that included the commonly recurring elements, honing in on palm trees, the bay, the bridge and the sunset. It’s also the only design that included the word “Florida.”

Commissioner Liz Alpert said if they were to take an immediate vote, she would select the composite.

“Why not take these and put them out there and see what the community thinks?” Brody asked.

Palleger agreed that public input should play a role in the refinement, and expressed hope that a decision may be made the next time he appears before the commission.

WHO?

When Dream Large kicked off the submission phase of its city seal redesign public engagement campaign, founder Anand Pallegar wasn’t sure what to expect.

“This was one of the riskiest things to do because we weren’t sure whether we would get one or how many jokes we might get,” Anand told city commissioners on Monday.

The good news was submissions began rolling in immediately. The bad news, it appeared at the time, was that the activity appeared to be a prank.

“That morning, we started getting these submissions and they came in the form of pseudonyms of our Mayor Eric Arroyo,” Pallegar said. “And so we started to panic and thinking somebody is pranking our seal contest.”

efore the completion of Interstate 75 through Sarasota County in 1981, U.S. 41 was a bustling center of commerce.

Dubbed Tamiami Trail as the primary route between Tampa and Miami, the highway makes its way through Bradenton and Sarasota, winding through Fort Myers and Naples before turning toward the Atlantic.

The traffic the route generated brought with it hotels, restaurants and retail to serve locals and tourists, and capturing passers-by as they traveled along the Gulf Coast.

evident along the nearly five-mile stretch of North Tamiami Trail between downtown and University Parkway. A forum about the progress made in the district was hosted last week by City Commissioner Jen Ahearn-Koch in the Grand Foyer of the Van Wezel Performance Arts Hall, where 130 residents gathered to hear updates from long-time leaders of the effort and city planning staff.

“The regression can be traced back to the early 1980s with the construction of I-75 that severely impacted many of the hotels, motels and other retail uses that once thrived on the Trail,” said Sarasota General Manager of Planning Ryan Chapdelain.

“Safety issues follow along with a public realm that is often devoid of improvements.”

Multiple studies to improve the condition of North Tamiami Trail were shelved with no real progress made until 2009, when community stakeholders formed the NTRP and successfully assembled the collaborative efforts of neighborhood leaders and city planning staff to focus on public safety, traffic improvements and redevelopment, culminating in the City Commission adopting the overlay district in 2013.

Two of those stakeholders were on the panel, hotel owner Jay Patel and David Moriss, an architect and former chair of the Sarasota Planning Board, who have chaired and cochaired the NTRP since its inception.

SHIFT TOWARD RESIDENTIAL

When it became apparent commercial redevelopment would not lead the charge, the attention turned to residential, the timing auspicious given the pandemic-fueled mass migration to the Sarasota area from across the country.

On the heels of streetscape improvement and traffic calming brought by FDOT-built roundabouts at key intersections on North Tamiami Trail, eight multi-family developments have been either approved or are under development.

“One of the things became apparent is there’s not a huge appetite for retail on the North Trail,” said Moriss. “The UTC area has kind of sealed that fate citywide. More local service uses like dry cleaners, hardware stores, clothing and fresh produce have had their day in the past, but it appears that the adjacent neighborhoods simply haven’t been enough to sustain them. One of the things we didn’t dare dream of was quality housing on the North Trail … but now we are here.”

Most recently, the Planning Board signed off on Whitaker Lofts, a 19-unit condominium building with more than 8,400 square feet of retail space on the northeast quadrant of the roundabout at North Tamiami and 14th Street.

In all, that’s 458 new residences incentivized by the overlay district.

All have taken advantage of the incentives built into the voluntary overlay — developers are not required to conform — which include increased densities and building heights that must yield to “daylight plane’’ standards, designed to not block sunlight from adjacent properties in abutting neighborhoods.

Buildings must front Tamiami Trail with parking to the interior of the lots, a two-pronged strategy to enhance the streetscape while creating “enclosure,” a speed calming approach that inspires drivers to slow down by creating a more city-like setting rather than an open stretch of roadway, said Assistant City Engineer Dan Ohrenstein.

Many attendees questioned the panel about additional vehicles brought into their adjoining neighborhoods by the new condos and apartments, which carry a requirement of one parking space per unit, although the average of approved projects is 1.5 spaces per dwelling.

Residential development, Ohrenstein told them, will generate far fewer vehicle trips per day than would commercial properties that could be developed by right, and fewer driveway cuts will provide less opportunity for conflicting traffic.

Observer recommends …

What is a voter to do? Go with the career politicians who have created the messes we are in, or roll the dice on unproven, unknown newcomers?

L

ongtime residents here probably remember Congressman Dan Miller, the Bradenton Republican. He was unlike most politicians.

Miller was truly a principled fiscal conservative. He is often remembered for having the courage to take on the Big Sugar industry subsidies — a blasphemous position for a Florida Republican. He also opposed the slimy practice of congressional earmarks.

In the end, what voters probably admire most about Miller is that he did two things politicians rarely do: 1) He said he would serve a maximum of 10 years; and 2) that’s exactly what he did.

He did not become a career politician.

Miller came to mind as we perused the Aug. 23 primary ballots.

Front and center are three candidates making a career as politicians: Democratic gubernatorial candidate Charlie Crist; Congressman Vern Buchanan; and Manatee County Commissioner Carol Whitmore.

Whitmore is the champ — 31 years in elected office. Crist is second, 22; and Buchanan, 16.

All three, mind you, are good people. But, to be blunt, when politicians run for and hold office as many years as they have, they earn that ignominious label: political hacks.

And yet, here’s the mystery: Voters keep re-electing them. And we keep getting the same (lousy) results.

This creates such a conundrum for voters. What to do: Send the experienced hack back to the county commission, the statehouse and Washington; or roll the dice on some new, unproven candidate?

That’s the dilemma Republican and Democratic voters are facing in the Aug. 23 primary in Manatee and Sarasota counties.

Now add this factor to the above: Voters are PO’d. “Mad as hell, and aren’t going to take it anymore.”

But what is a voter to do?

In last week’s Observer, we devoted this space to candidates running for Sarasota County School Board and the Sarasota Hospital Board.

With this week’s installment of Observer recommendations, we’re addressing federal, state and Manatee County Republican and non-partisan primaries. As noted last week, because of our rejection of the Democratic Party’s politicoeconomic philosophies, we don’t make recommendations in those races. Here, then, are some considerations to weigh:

U.S. CONGRESS, DISTRICT 16, GOP Here are the Republicans’ choices in this race: Vern Buchanan: businessman/ entrepreneur, now career politician. In 16 years, he has earned the distinction of having the lowest and second to lowest ranking among Florida’s congressional Republicans from the Club for Growth and Freedom Works, two of the nation’s leading freedom and free-enterprise advocacy organizations.

If Republicans win back the House in November, Buchanan’s seniority puts him in line for the chairmanship of the powerful House Ways and Means Committee. That’s a prized position that can mean having heavy influence in how and where billions of federal dollars are allocated. It’s also a position Friends of Vern want to keep — more pork for them.

But one more thing to consider: What signature, nation-changing legislation has Buchanan sponsored and passed in 16 years? None.

Martin Hyde: Sarasota businessman/entrepreneur who has run unsuccessfully twice for a seat on the Sarasota City Commission.

Depending on your point of view, Hyde is seen as a gadfly or an astute financial watchdog for taxpayers (the latter is our view) at City Commission and Sarasota School Board meetings. He constantly challenges how commissioners and board members spend taxpayers’ money.

To his detriment, Hyde also has a reputation for saying and doing things in public that you don’t want an elected official to do — e.g. for one, hassling a Sarasota police officer who observed him driving 57 mph in 40 mph zone and texting while driving. He said to the officer, among other things: “You know who I am, right?”

What was he thinking? (He wasn’t.)

With the nation in the state it is in, there’s a strong inclination to recommend voters throw out everyone in Congress. None of them deserves re-election.

If, by chance, voters do reject Buchanan, Republicans would default to a candidate who is a philosophically principled constitutional conservative. Yay. Hyde’s voting, presumably, would align far more than Buchanan’s with strict limits on government and expanding individual rights and free enterprise, but, unfortunately, his behavior, alas, can be unpredictable, erratic and embarrassing.

We recommend: Flip a coin.

AGRICULTURE COMMISSIONER The best candidate on the ballot is a Floridian most Floridians don’t know.

Meet James Shaw, Republican for commissioner of agriculture. He is not a politician.

When Antifa threatened to destroy the Gettysburg Battlefield Monument and gravestones in 2020, Shaw and two of his sons drove through the night from their home in Okeechobee to stand guard at the monument.

Shaw bleeds red, white and blue Americanism.

“I don’t drink. I don’t smoke.

I don’t do drugs. I don’t do antidepressants,” he told us. “I’ve been married 40 years. I have eight children and 22 grandchildren. That is my soul.”

He is also a successful entrepreneur in a business that takes a bull’s strength — owner of a trucking company with 200 employees, and once managed a 600-person trucking facility with 525 hard-core Teamsters Union members. He is also a farmer — a 30-acre composting farm.

And this: He was an honorable mention All-American in football at Colgate and graduated with a bachelor’s in anthropology.

Shaw knows his opponent — establishment Republican and Senate President Wilton Simpson — has him outgunned. Simpson has raised $782,000 to Shaw’s $50,000, $47,000 of which is his own money.

Why is he doing this? “The Nov. 20 election,” he said. “It put a spark in me.”

Why ag commissioner? “I don’t want to be a congressman or a senator. I want to be in a position of influence. So I said, ‘Let me at it.’”

MANATEE COUNTY COMMISSION

One of the clear messages of the 2020 elections in this Republican stronghold is voters wanted to shift county government, particularly its

fiscal direction, more to the right.

And voters did so decisively with the election of three conservatives, albeit political novices, to the commission — James Satcher, Kevin Van Ostenbridge and George Kruse.

With incumbent Vanessa Baugh, this foursome steamrolled over the other three commissioners — Democrat Reggie Bellamy and more moderate Republican Misty Servia and liberal Republican Carol Whitmore.

The question now is whether Manatee’s Republicans are still in a testy mood and want the commission stacked with six staunch conservatives and one Democrat.

Judging from the TV attack ads and petty campaign fights about signage and other irrelevancies, you can say the testiness is still there.

And if money is an indicator, the who’s who of political contributors in Manatee are betting on the incumbents.

One way to interpret the contributions is the establishment donors want checks and balances to keep the conservative majority wing from becoming wingnuts. n District 4: Incumbent Misty Servia has taken plenty of buckshot in the back during this election cycle for her stance on masks and lockdowns during the pandemic. To be fair, she certainly wasn’t the only conservative politician sucked into the lockdown vortex. As the saying goes, “If we only knew then what we know now.”

And, as we have seen over the past year and a half, Servia has taken her share of bullets from the Manatee commission’s majority for not thinking exactly as it does.

Everyone has winced at this bickering, likely recalling that great Los Angeles riot philosopher, Rodney King: “Can’t we all just get along?”

In that vein, Commissioner Kevin van Ostenbridge, one of the leaders of the commission majority, would like to see that dissension subside by replacing Servia with her opponent, Michael Rahn.

Rahn looks like he has the right stuff. Conservative; a 13-year Marine, including Operation Desert Storm; past president of the Manatee-Sarasota Building Industry Association; vice chair of the Safe Children Coalition and the SCC Foundation, which serves children in foster care; inducted in 2017 into the Florida Housing Hall of Fame.

Servia’s campaign strategist, Anthony Pedicini, of course, has blasted Rahn for a string of real estate loan defaults during the big recession, questioning whether Rahn should be a steward of the county’s billion-dollar budget.

But here’s what appears to be a key point for voters: Do Manatee County residents want a super stack of all like-minded commissioners?

Or are they willing to have some checks and balances by re-electing Servia?

There is merit to having different points of view on a board. Servia can continue to provide that.

We recommend: Misty Servia n District 6: “I’ve been doing this a long time. You can’t do your job if you dwell on something that you’re not going to win. You’ve got to work with everybody, whether you agree with them or not.”

Those are the wise words of incumbent at-large Commissioner Carol Whitmore.

Yes, she has been “doing this a long time.” Too long.

God bless her passion and love for Manatee County. (No doubt she likes the power and limelight as well.)

But like Commissioner Servia, Whitmore is not in alignment on many issues with the current commission majority. In fact, she is justifiably called a RINO, Republican in name only. And it’s fair to say she is often a burr rubbing the rumps of the commission majority, voicing sarcastic comments that serve as irritants, not constructive dialogue.

If re-elected one more time, Whitmore would remain what she is — another check and balance.

Perhaps, however, she can heed her own words — “You’ve got to work with everybody.”

The alternative is first-time candidate Jason Bearden.

Bearden has many attractive qualities: combat Marine sargeant and Scout sniper in Iraq; son of

But here’s the deal: Earnest as he is, Bearden needs seasoning. He needs more time and experience in Manatee County community affairs.

For District 6, we’re expecting this to be the last time we write …

We recommend: Carol Whitmore

MANATEE COUNTY SCHOOL BOARD In this three-person, non-partisan race, each of the candidates has positives. None has glaring negatives. But at the same time, none of them stands so superior to the others to make this an easy choice for voters.

James Golden is the incumbent.

He is Old Guard Manatee — a longtime civic leader; preacher; former two-term Bradenton City Council member; board member with Centerstone (formerly Manatee Glens), Meals on Wheels and Just for Girls.

Richard Tatem, 56, spent 30 years in the Air Force, retiring as a colonel. He also served as an assistant professor of foreign language at the Air Force Academy; a commercial pilot for five years; and as deputy division chief of an Air Force reserve unit. He has lived in Manatee with his wife for four years.

Chantal Wilford knows a lot about language. She earned a bachelor’s degree in French, Russian and Linguistics from the University of Durham in England. She works and has worked as a translator — translating textbooks from Dutch and French into English. And, she and her husband have four children — all of whom he she homeschooled until they reached fifth grade and entered Manatee’s public school system.

Now overlay those three candidates on the Manatee School District. For the past three and a half years, under the leadership of Superintendent Cynthia Saunders, the district has made noteworthy, steady progress — after years of upheaval and dissension on the board.

There are no more “D” and “F” schools in the district (A decade ago, there were 13). The district’s academic ranking has reached its highest in history — 25th out of 67.

The district’s surplus has grown from $14.4 million in 2014 to $39.4 million, highest ever. Upward momentum is palpable and steady.

With Golden and Wilford, voters will get status quo and little disruption — a positive for a district that was long in need of stability and consistency.

With Tatem, voters are likely to get more of a man of action, new ideas and leadership. You don’t become a colonel by being a donothing wallflower.

Tatem has made many statements about constitutional principles and being against critical race theory and diversity, equity and inclusion indoctrination. To be sure, parents don’t want that either.

What taxpayers do want is a school board member who will be a smart steward of taxpayers dollars and a sensible, forward-thinking leaderadviser to the superintendent.

We recommend: Richard Tatem

Pole position Florida Power & Light demonstrates how it is upgrading power lines against storm damage.

ta n d i n g n ex t to a 6,000-pound steel and concrete pole Florida Power & Light was erecting on University Parkway, FPL spokesman George Bennett talked July 27 about his company’s technological advances.

It was part of FPL’s effort to show local residents how it is upgrading its main power lines to withstand hurricane-force winds and deal with potential power outages caused by severe storms.

The new pole includes an automated “smart” feeder switch, a device which during a power outage can send information back to FLP staff on the location of the outage.

The switch also has the ability to reroute power around the affected area. FPL now has 200,000 such devices throughout its coverage area.

Along with showcasing the sturdier pole and smart switch, FPL also demonstrated how it uses more than 200 drone flights a day to assess its power lines and equipment. Bennett emphasized how drones would be used after a severe storm to identify problem areas, and to get “the right crews and the right equipment to the right place to help speed restoration.”

Also present at the demonstration was Rick Teigland, a manager of grid automation with the company, who said the ability of the automated feeder switches to direct the flow of power has been a game-changer.

He said the smart switches actually have the ability to communicate with each other in an effort to direct power around a problem area. While the problem area might not have restored power until a repair, the areas beyond that problem area can continue to have their flow of power.

He said often that communication can result in restored power to most customers in less than a minute.

“Instead of having 2,000 customers waiting for a repair, you only have 300 to 500 waiting for a repair,” he said.

Bennett said it was back when Hurricane Charley (2004) and Hurricane Wilma (2005) hit Florida that FPL decided it needed to make advancements to be more prepared for natural disasters.

“Those storms in a short amount of time led not just FPL, but I think all of Florida, to reexamine, and make upgrades to our systems,” Bennett said.

Teigland said about 85% of the switches are on above-ground lines, and about 15% are underground, although the company is now focusing more on building them below ground.

He said the newest switches have the capability to send out a low-level pulse of electricity to identify problem areas. That low-level pulse does not affect the system’s ability to provide power to homes. Previously, in checking for problems, power was toggled to neighborhoods, which would affect a home’s power.

Barry Lawson, a production lead with FPL, said 10 years ago the company began upgrading its power lines to better withstand hurricane-force winds. The University Parkway pole was an example of the newest design.

According to FPL Spokesman Marshall Hastings, poles in the Manatee and Sarasota County area are required to withstand winds up to 130 miles per hour, as required by the National Electric Safety Code’s standards.

Lawson said the process of upgrading power lines is known as “hardening.” He said the steel and concrete poles used for the transmission lines – or mainline power lines – are

installed primarily because of the higher voltage of those lines.

Bennett said other components of hardening include spacing power lines more closely together, something which decreases their susceptibility to damage. He said another important component is manage-

ment of vegetation, with trees blowing into lines being a leading cause of power outages.

He said measures are taken to prevent flooding from storm surge in substations that manage power from below ground.

He said pole inspections are now conducted every eight years.

is made vastly easier by the use of drones, which they started using 10 years ago.

Lawson said the company used to perform what was known as climate inspection, which required its staff to be physically present to check the wires, using a bucket lift truck.

“That’s a very slow, tedious, and time-consuming process,” he said. “(Using drones) is better, quicker, and safer.”

FPL drone pilot Matthew Harvey said the drones use a 30x optical (telescopic) zoom. He said although each pole is different, typically the optical zoom is sufficient to uncover any issues. The drones are also equipped with the ability to zoom an image digitally and also can transmit an infrared view to staff members.

Lawson said the infrared technology allows engineers to detect, and respond to, damage which is not externally visible, and can only be observed through heat levels.

“Climbing the pole, you’re not going to see those heat-related issues until there’s substantial damage,” he said. “This technology will pick it up well before any damage occurs.”

He said some components which often experience failures include the lightning arresters, which divert the energy from lightning strikes away from the power lines and into the ground. Lawson said these devices are important for protecting customers from electrical surges and can become damaged internally.

“That’s pretty important,” he said of ensuring those devices are operational. “We have a lot of lightning around here.”

He said another concern is damage to electrical wiring, indicated by “hotspots” where increasing heat levels are observed.

Drones identify woodpecker damage to insulators, which is a frequent problem. Drones also spot other concerns that include rusted screws, bolts and insulators, along with loose wiring.

If a drone is within sight of a pilot, it can be used to examine power lines up to two miles away. FPL is now attempting to obtain a license which would allow it to operate the drones outside of their line of sight.

or the past two decades, the holiday-tree lighting at St. Armands Circle has been synonymous with Sarasota and the season. That tradition was in danger of missing 2022, and perhaps beyond, as the 20-year-old yuletide faux fir has reached obsolescence to the extent that contractors will no longer assemble it.

On Monday, leaders of the St. Armands Circle Business Improvement District appealed to the Sarasota City Commission for a one-time grant of $286,875 to purchase a new tree, one that BID board of directors member Tom Leonard told commissioners will continue the tradition as the city’s official tree.

With the launch of the holiday season 90 days away, Leonard said the ask was urgent as the tree must be ordered within days to be delivered in time to be erected on Nov. 1.

“We found out a few months ago that because of disrepair, it’s just no longer viable,” Leonard said. “After 20 years of use (the tree) has reached the end of its lifespan to the point that no contractor will touch the setup of the holiday decor any longer. Much like any other capital improvement, nothing lasts forever. This request to fund a holiday tree isn’t just any tree.

This is a city tree.”

Commissioners approved the expenditure by a 4-1 vote — with Mayor Erik Arroyo opposed — which will require a fund balance transfer from the current fiscal year’s budget.

The vote came a week after Arroyo expressed concerns about deficit spending in the proposed fiscal year 2023 budget.

The new St. Armands tree will be 60 feet tall, Leonard calling it the largest tree on the Gulf Coast adorned with so many LEDs it will be visible while crossing the Ringling Bridge, if not from downtown.

“This tree would draw visitors from around our coast from Tampa to Naples and local areas like Lakewood Ranch and UTC,” Leonard pitched.

“This capital investment will generate for the city huge payback and positive free social media and print marketing.”

As it has for the last two decades, the BID will pay for the assembly, removal and storage of the holiday decor, a cost of about $30,000 a year.

St. Armands BID Executive Director Rachel Burns told commissioners the new tree should have a lifespan of 20 to 40 years.

Commissioner Jen Ahearn-Koch wondered aloud if the tree purchase sets a precedent for similar future requests, specifically from the Downtown Improvement District.

“Don’t be surprised if the DID comes begging,” said City Manager Marlon Brown.

The holiday tree in St. Armands Circle has long been a centerpiece of the season.

The man said he had not spoken with the woman since January 2020. The man claimed the dog is an emotional support animal registered to him. She said that her ex-boyfriend had not been in possession of the dog in two years, and it was left with her while he looked for a place to live. Although he did not see the libation lobber, he believed it was someone from an address he shared with officers. Police spoke with a third party who stated the subject apartment was the home of his girlfriend and her roommate, and that he was aware of an ongoing dispute over parking between the complainant and his girlfriend. The man said he arrived at the apartment to take care of his girlfriend’s dog, and that nobody was home at the time of the alleged incident. Officers noted that the man was nervous when speaking to them. A doorbell camera at a nearby residence was inoperable and no video evidence of the incident was available. The case is related to a previous incident on the day prior, when the complainant reported other liquids and items being left on the vehicle.

Pastel postcard in time Six paintings by Enomoto Chikatoshi form the heart of a Ringling Museum exhibit that depicts a brief era before World War II.

hese six paintings have come across an ocean and across a continent, and collectively they represent a world that only existed for a brief moment in time. Perhaps most interestingly, this marks the first time that they’ve been shown together in the same place in about four decades.

Ballroom Florida, an exhibit at the John and Mable Ringling Museum of Art, attempts to re-create the Jazz Age in Japan. The centerpiece of the display is a series of paintings

by Enomoto Chikatoshi that depict women who may have frequented the dance hall that lends the exhibit its title.

These works represented a diversion in the mores of Japanese art, which had famously portrayed women in traditional poses and outfits. But Chikatoshi painted contemporary women in Western garb as

glamorous, and he captured the brief moment of the Jazz Age in Japan.

Rhiannon Paget, curator for Asian Art at the Ringling Museum, says Chikatoshi’s paintings are an example of the Japanese art style of Bijinga, which depicts beautiful people.

“That’s a genre that goes back hundreds of years,” Paget says of Bijin-ga. “But what’s interesting about Enomoto Chikatoshi is rather than doing this kind of demure, oldfashioned women as a lot of his peers were doing, he made them fashionable. He put them in contemporary western clothes. He gave them bobs.

He made them look like they were doing cool stuff that modern women wanted to, representing kind of an aspirational lifestyle.”

Chikatoshi, while working in the ’20s and ’30s, was very much an artist of his time.

And because of the chaotic nature of the world at that point, it was a time that wouldn’t last.

and Paget says the scene would disappear as quickly as it emerged.

That makes Chikatoshi’s paintings more than just art; they’re historical postcards of a wrinkle in time.

“In the late 19th century, there was a period of really rapid westernization,” says Paget of Japan’s development. “By the 1930s, their relationships with a lot of Europe and America are getting [strained].

They’ve already invaded China; they are defining their own type of mod-

ernism. They’re setting their own natural identity, which means they can enjoy these westernized lifestyle aspects. Women are enjoying a lot more social freedom.

“But they’re still very Japanese.

They keep their own traditions and create new traditions. They’re quite nationalistic at this point of time.”

Paget says the women in the paintings were likely taxi dancers who worked at the ballroom and would dance with men for a fee.

Some of the women are depicted wearing jewelry. One of the women depicted appears to be a singer, and another sits next to a ticket booth as if she’s waiting to greet a customer.

The unifying element is that these are young people who are dancing to Western music quite similar to the way people did across the Pacific.

“It was the hottest place in town,” says Paget. “Then basically all the

clubs close within a short period of time. I don’t know if that was within a few weeks or months.

“But it all came to an end. With the war effort, it was no longer deemed becoming of a good Japanese citizen on the homefront to be dancing to American jazz music.”

So what do we know about the people depicted in the paintings?

Paget stresses that the identities of the women in the paintings are not clearly known, but she’s able to make an informed guess about what life may have been like for them.

For women in Japan at this point in time right before World War II, there were limited options for working outside the home.

“This is not a job for a young woman of a good family unless she’s a complete rebel,” says Paget. “It’s like bar work. It does occupy quite an ambiguous territory.

“But in a changing world, this offered a range of options to women who wanted to or had to support themselves. Maybe it was better than working as a waitress in a cafe. And maybe it wasn’t.”

Even the name of the club is a bit of an anachronism. You may wonder what exactly people in Japan knew about Florida in 1930, and the answer is probably not much.

The name Ballroom Florida came from a popular club in Paris, and Paget says it had a double meaning.

“It’s an idea of the exotic,” she says. “Why do you call it Ballroom Florida after a Parisian nightclub, which is named after Florida state?

“I think there’s an element of escape and glamour; it encourages the sort of Parisian chic and also this promise of a tropical world. There’s all these good things — what a great place to go and enjoy a night out.”

What else can we see from the paintings? Each of them is in the shape of a fan, but Paget says they wouldn’t have been used that way.

They were too large and unwiedly for that. In fact, the only way you could see these paintings was by looking up toward the heavens.

Paget says they adorned the ceiling

of a famous Tokyo hotel called the Meguro Gajoen until the mid-1980s, when they were taken down as part of a renovation project.

They were sold to a private art collector at that point, and later found their way to the Ringling’s collection.

The paintings had fallen out of favor.

But all these years later, they’re back in vogue.

“They went through a stage where these kinds of paintings of modern women were not fashionable in Japan,” says Paget. “They might’ve thought, ‘That is tacky. That is an abomination.’ They wanted to see beautiful women in kimonos.’

“But now, everyone would love to have these. But they can’t have them because we have them.”

The artworks, so precious and so rare, are on display through Sept. 25, and Paget says after that they will be placed back into storage for five years to preserve them.

That’s a necessary step because light can damage them over time.

Interestingly, these six paintings have not been displayed together since their time in Japan.

Paget says that three of them were part of a touring exhibition in 2012, but to have seen all six of them together, you’d have to go back in time to Meguro Gajoen decades ago.

The paintings aren’t the only artifacts from Japan’s Jazz Age. Paget says that the museum was able to acquire some of the actual tokens that taxi dancers would be paid with, and the exhibit also houses home furnishings that would’ve been part of the same era in Japan.

The exhibit also lists some of the American musical artists and songs that would have been played in Ballroom Florida during its brief reign as one of Tokyo’s leading hotspots.

The furnishings, which all come from a private collection in St. Petersburg, include lacquered boxes and vases, and there’s even a luxury metal smoking set from roughly the same time frame in Japan.

“These are not the kinds of things that would be on display in the dance hall. This is more like for the home,” says Paget of the furnishings. “I chose these particular pieces from the collection because they sort of tie in with some of the themes that you see with the Ballroom Florida.”

Here comes the Sun King Clay Robinson, co-founder of Sun King Brewing, isn’t just opening a new venue in Sarasota. He’s moving his family here to be a part of the craft beer community.

WHAT’S ON TAP

Sun King specializes in India pale ales, with nearly half of its 10 taps devoted to that style of beer.

One of its best sellers is a Mexican-style lager named Pachanga. Another notable standout is its Cherry Busey brew, a red ale aged with cherries.

From an orange vanilla cream ale to an amber ale, the brewery offers a variety of styles and Robinson says they look forward to continuing to experiment as they embrace their new Florida location.

lay Robinson took the direct route to building his own brewery. He started at the source.

Robinson is the co-founder of Sun King, Sarasota’s newest brewery, and he’s been working in beer his entire adult life. He started at Rock Bottom Brewery in his native Indiana at the age of 24, and a decade later, he wound up starting his own brewery with friend and colleague Dave Colt.

Sun King, opened in 2009, grew by leaps and bounds and eventually spawned another six locations.

Now, Robinson is sitting in the remodeled former JDub’s Brewing Co. location on Mango Avenue — which opened on July 22 — and he’s getting ready to move his life and his family from Indiana to Florida.

“My grandparents lived in Clearwater when I was a kid. So I spent a lot of time in Southwest Florida,” he says. “As an adult, coming down and seeing it again, the area’s beautiful.

Sarasota, in particular.

“As we started talking about our lives and our growth strategies, we realized that if we could open a brewery in Florida — which has been very welcoming and enjoys our beer — then we would have an opportunity to become part of the craft beer community and grow our presence in Florida. We’re Sun King. It’s the Sunshine State.”

His life never had to take this turn.

There were no frustrating evenings spent in his garage trying to perfect his process. Robinson learned the brewery business at Rock Bottom,

and he later moved to work at Ram Restaurant and Brewery in 2005.

That’s where he began working with Colt, and as they got to know each other better, they immediately started dreaming new dreams.

“At the end of our first week together, we were having a beer and the conversation started,” says Robinson. “‘What would you do if you could open your own brewery?’ That conversation lasted three years while we worked together. After three years of talking about it, we were working on some plans, talking with some chef and restaurant partners try-

ing to figure out how to do a brewpub. We realized that restaurants and breweries cost a lot of money to open, so we decided we didn’t want to be a restaurant and brewery; we just wanted to be a brewery.”

Things happened quickly for Sun King, which just celebrated its 13th anniversary. Robinson had quit his job, cashed in his savings and made a bet on himself.

His five-year goal was to brew about 5,000 barrels a year, and that came more quickly than expected.

Sun King went from 500 barrels in 2009 to 5,000 barrels in 2010,

and it kept on expanding by about 5,000 barrels a year. Robinson says Sun King now brews about 30,000 barrels a year, and he hopes his Florida location will eventually produce 5,000 barrels of its own.

“We went from four owners working 80 hours a week (in) year one, and today we have 60-plus full-time employees, and 100 and some parttime employees between seven locations,” Robinson says.

Sun King has some Florida employees helping to build the brand.

Joe Burns, the brewery’s vice president of sales, has lived in Sarasota for 20 years, and he previously worked for Cigar City in Tampa. Tim Marshall, Sun King’s head brewer in Florida, learned the business by brewing at Rock Bottom Brewery in Daytona. Despite all their brewing

experience, the location required some work.

Renovations to the former JDub’s facility included replacing drywall, resurfacing the bar and doing some heavy cleaning, including coating and repairing the concrete floors.

“Somebody who was here the other day was like, ‘You could eat off these floors.’ That’s the point,” Robinson says.

While the construction was happening, Robinson brought his wife, Staraya, and daughter, Zaya, down to frolic on Siesta Key. The trip was all they needed to rethink where they wanted to call home.

“We went back up to the Midwest in late spring and it was so cold,” says Robinson. “We were talking and my wife was like, ‘Do you think we could move to Florida?’”

So now, Robinson is in the midst of his move that shifts his entire life.

With a son due next month, everything is coming together for Sun King in Sarasota.

“We’re living with her parents right now, so we’ve got family support while my life is crazy with getting breweries open and doing all this,” he says. “It’s a lot of moving pieces.”

mma Wilson Weber grew up attending Circus Arts Conservatory’s summer camp.

From age 5 to 12 years old, she would lead groups of students in learning acts including juggling, acrobatics, aerial silks and lyra.

“I got into circus (as a kid) when I went to watch the shows with my dad,” Weber said. “He let me try out the camp. … I really wanted to get to help out the kids.”

So now the 15-year-old serves as a camp counselor each week from June to early August.

Alongside staff and fellow counselors, Weber walks dozens of campers through the acts, training that culminates with weekly performances. The most recent week’s show featured a superhero theme including Spiderman, Batman and Iron Man. “I get to watch the kids learn and enjoy the activities I had when I was little,” Weber said. “It’s nice to see them have the same experiences I did.”

elanie Thomas wants to help families succeed.

The founder of Greatness Beyond Measure works to help children enjoy social, academic and artistic success through positive reinforcement.

“I’m happy when we can create positive experiences,’’ she said. “We want them to be successful in school and everything else they do.”

When talk turns to back to school season, that often means providing pencils, pens, paper, notebooks and backpacks for the first day of class.

That was again the case when Greatness Beyond Measure and the Barbershop Men of Prayer hosted a Back to School Bookbag Giveaway on July 31 at the Ringling College College of Art and Design’s Alfred R. Goldstein Library.

Children and families met at the library to pick from a selection of 500 backpacks in various colors.

The backpacks were purchased with the help of a local donor. There’s been hiccups in the past — last year’s backpacks almost didn’t arrive in time — so Thomas and staff got ahead this year and ordered in April.

Community businesses and leaders joined in on the fun, with some groups providing free haircuts, virtual reality game sessions and playtime in a bounce house.

Kids were also able to pick up Italian ice as a treat to beat the heat.

John and Shelly Corey, of Sarasota, sold their home at 3731 Indian Beach Place to Timothy and Jeri Moravits, of Sarasota, for $6 million. Built in 2006, it has five bedrooms, fourand-a-half baths, a pool and 6,073 square feet of living area. It sold for $3.2 million in 2012.

he players practiced hard.

They took water breaks.

They broke down all the equipment together, then went into the locker room for a recap of the day and a look ahead.

In other words, the Sarasota Christian School football team prepared like a real football team.

It all came together within a matter of months during the 2021-2022 school year, planning for a launch this fall. And indeed that launch will happen — even if the inaugural season at Sarasota Christian is not going to look exactly how coach Jacob Spenn envisioned.

Instead of jumping into 11-on11 football in year one, the Blazers decided after spring practices that they will play eight-on-eight football in the Sunshine State Athletic Conference.

Spenn was worried about depth on the offensive and defensive lines.

The Blazers have a solid group of about seven players who can play on the line, Spenn said, but he did not want to risk forfeiting because the team didn’t have enough linemen if a few of them were to suffer injuries.

The eight-on-eight game eliminates two offensive linemen positions, leaving a center and two guards. Otherwise, the game is similar to the 11-on-11 game everyone knows. Five offensive players have to be on the line of scrimmage at the start of the play, though two of them — receivers — are eligible. Teams can elect to run or pass like normal. If anything, Spenn said, going to eighton-eight football for year one could bring more exciting play.

“I talked to different coaches about this and they all said it plays like real football,” Spenn said. “It’s got some challenges, you know, like how we rework these plays to fit these rules. But some concepts actually may work better. I think the game is going to play faster. With two less linemen, players can get to the edge faster. In the past I have never run a lot of speed option concepts because you have to be really committed to it for it to work (in 11-man football), but in eight-man, the edge is right there. It’s a different feel, so you can use it.”

No matter the style of play, the 2022 season was always going to be about helping the Blazers learn the game. Many athletes on the team, like rising sophomore Trey Featherston, had never played football

before the program’s spring practices in May. Featherston said his experience playing basketball convinced him to try out.

“I’m a center in basketball and I foul a lot,” Featherston said with a laugh. “I was ready for the contact.”

Featherston has been playing defensive end for the Blazers through the spring and early fall practices. He said he feels much more comfortable on the field now than he did in May, both in terms of physical actions and the mental side of the game, knowing where he’s supposed to end up on a given play. Featherston said the Blazers are beginning to feel like a team even though they have yet to play a game.

“It is encouraging to know that we are building a foundation here,” Featherston said. “Hopefully years down the line, after I graduate, I can come back for Friday night football and see the lights and the stadium packed. It’s exciting.”

Of course, the Blazers still have to deal with the challenges any football program in Florida faces, like weather. The program’s Aug. 2 practice was ended early because of storms in the area. Thankfully, the team was able

to get in a lot of its work anyway.

Spenn said one of the benefits of having a smaller roster — the Blazers have about 20 athletes — is that each individual gets more reps. Spenn said he estimates that the Blazers can get done in 90 minutes what a full-sized team could get done in two hours.

The Blazers program will only get bigger from here. Spenn said that the Blazers’ middle school flag football team has 37 sign-ups as of Aug. 2, with 18 of those being eighth graders. The expectation is that most if not all of those 18 will join the high school tackle football program next year. Spenn reiterated that the goal of the program is to be a full-fledged 11-on-11 program eventually, and if all those kids join the program, it might have to be next year no matter what: combining those kids with the team’s projected returnees put the team’s varsity roster at approximately 35, which is too large per eight-on-eight rules.

Spenn said he’s not thinking about that right now. Instead he’s focused on helping his players develop as much as they can this fall, not only as football players but as human beings.

Of course, he and the Blazers would like to win a few games, too.

“My expectation is that we’re going to win until that is proven otherwise,” Spenn said. “We’re going to bring a commitment, a toughness. I was really encouraged by the effort we showed in the spring. I think this group is going to be fun to watch.”

More to fall than football A look at the area’s swimming, volleyball, cross country and golf programs, in which multiple champions could be crowned by the end of the year.

he helmets have been strapped.

High school football practice returned Aug. 1, and I, for one, could not be happier.

Partly because I have missed being on the gridiron each Friday night and partly because it means we are one step closer to semi-tolerable temperatures, but excitement all counts the same. In addition to our look at Sarasota Christian’s attempt at starting a football program in this week’s feature, we’ll bring you our annual full-squad football previews, two a week, finishing just in time for the Preseason Classic games Aug. 19.

Like I said, I’m excited for all of it. But the schedule being what it is, it doesn’t leave much room for previews of the other fall sports, which always feels a bit wrong to me. There is a heck of a lot of talent in those sports in Sarasota and, by the way, those sports have also started practicing for their seasons.

They deserve time in the spotlight, so here it is: A preview of each of the non-football fall sports, where the chance of another state championship is high.

the rest of their heavy hitters, such as rising seniors Evan Keogh (thirdand sixth-place individual finishes) and Liam Heary (fifth- and sixthplace finishes) and rising junior Casey Aten (eighth place finish).

The Sailors also finished second in two relays last year, which should be strong again and count for a lot.

On the Rams girls side, rising juniors Addison Sauickie and Gracie Weyant combined to win three gold medals last year. I would expect more gold from them in 2022, which is good for the team’s overall chances. They will lose graduated swimmers such as Julia Brzozowski, who finished second in the 500 freestyle, but the program has a number of younger swimmers who should be able to step up.

Over at Cardinal Mooney, I don’t know if the Cougars will be in the hunt for a team title, but I do know that rising senior Michaela Mattes will be a threat to earn her thirdstraight gold in the 500-yard freestyle, as well as jump up from silver in the 200-yard individual medley.

VOLLEYBALL

After winning a beach volleyball state title in the spring, is Cardinal Mooney High ready to repeat the feat indoors? It’s possible. The Cougars have a deep squad, led by rising senior Jordyn Byrd, a University of Texas commit. Byrd helped the program win its first-ever state championship as a freshman in 2019. It would be apropos for her to close her Mooney career the same way. She’ll have plenty of help, with players such as rising junior Helena Hebda and rising seniors Gracie Page, Madeline Carson and Sawyer DeYoung pushing the Cougars forward. SWIMMING

Can the Sarasota High boys team and the Riverview High girls team repeat as Class 4A state champions? Those are the biggest questions, in my mind, entering this season. For the Sailors boys, it would mean three state titles in a row. Difficult and impressive, certainly, but not impossible — the Riverview boys team won four in a row from 2014-2017, after all. And I think the Sailors could indeed three-peat thanks to their depth.

They lose the now-graduated Cole Firlie, who got them two individual sixth-place finishes last year. But

McLaughlin in the regional quarterfinals last year, the team will be out for revenge.

The rest of the volleyball landscape is tough to read. The normally strong Riverview High program had a down year in 2021. Can the Rams get back to their district-winning ways? Booker went 9-11 in 2021, but that was an improvement from past seasons. Can that trajectory continue and lead to a winning record?

Sarasota High has a new coach in Daris Rodriguez, who brings a ton of experience from playing in Puerto Rico and from coaching in the WAVE Volleyball travel program.

Will Rodriguez be the one to bring the Sailors program to prominence?

I don’t have the answers to these questions. If I did, there wouldn’t be much point in asking them, now would there?

We will all have to watch and find out together.

CROSS COUNTRY

This is a sport where Sarasota High typically leads the way. Last year, the boys program finished 13th at the Class 4A meet and had three runners in the top 100. Two of those runners — William Hartvigsen (48th; 16:42.30) and Alec Miller (51st; 16:47.20) — will return as seniors this fall. That’s a good foundation, with the expectation that some younger runners will improve their times as well.

On the girls side, Sailors rising senior Ella Menke finished 21st (19:49.20) at last year’s state meet and should do well again in 2022.

But Cardinal Mooney rising junior Addison Dempsey might have the best shot at a high finish of any individual runner; she finished 12th (19:27.30) at the Class 1A meet in 2021.

GOLF

The Cardinal Mooney High boys team finished sixth in Class 1A last season thanks in large part to a tiedfor-fifth performance to the nowgraduated Wyatt Plattner, who is moving on to the University of Cincinnati. If top-30 finishers Nicolas Bencomo, a rising sophomore, and Tommy Tyler, a rising junior, have strong seasons, the Cougars could finish high again.

The Riverview High boys team finished tied for 10th at the Class 4A state tournament last year, but the Rams lose Connor DeMichele — who finished tied for 10th as an individual — to graduation.

The Rams will need golfers such as rising senior Aksel Moe and rising junior Justin Zullin to have strong seasons if they want to replicate that state finish as a team.

No area girls golfers qualified for the state tournament last season.

Mateu Dalmau is a baseball player who will be a freshman at Cardinal Mooney High this school year. Dalmau threw a perfect game July 25 in the Florida Burn Tampa National travel team’s 8-0 win over the Mid Atlantic Show at the 2022 Perfect Game 14U National Championships, held July 20-27 in Hoover, Alabama.

When did you start playing baseball?

I started playing baseball at 5 years old. I have two older cousins (Enrique Santa Maria and Alex Santa Maria) who were playing. They would keep telling me to try it. I was playing soccer at the time, and I was athletic, so I thought I might be good at it. It was a good decision to try it.

What is the appeal to you?

I would say just being out on the field. It is like an escape to me. When you’re out there, there’s nothing you need to worry about except having fun. You’re playing a kid’s game.

What is your best skill?

I would say my best skill is pitching.

I started pitching around 7 years old.

I am left-handed so pitching was always something I could see myself trying. It was not until I was 10 that I realized I was a pretty good pitcher.

What is your best pitch?

My changeup is my best pitch, for

sure. It dives away from right-handed hitters.

What have you been working to improve?

Honestly, I have just been trying to get bigger and stronger for my freshman high school season.

What is your favorite memory?

Throwing a perfect game is up there, but besides that, it is when I was 10 and I played in the USSSA All-America Games at the organization’s Space Coast Complex in Viera.

I started the championship game and threw five shutout innings and got the game’s MVP.
