Key day for Buchanan U.S. Rep. Vern Buchanan (RLongboat Key) was presented with a key to the city on July 11 during a City Commission meeting. The congressman met Mayor Erik Arroyo, Vice Mayor Kyle Battie and Commissioner Jen Ahearn-Koch at City Hall, where he was presented with the key. The city’s proclamation cited Buchanan’s record reforming military procedures, supporting red tide research, helping find federal funding for wetlands restoration at Bobby Jones Golf Club and other actions as reasons to give him the honor.

Arty swims with the fishes Mote Marine Laboratory & Aquarium released a new shark, but Arty isn’t like any other predatory fish. For one, he’s made of recycled materials and designed to highlight water conservation and inclusion for individuals with disabilities. Arty was created by a group of eight artists from Borderless Arts Tennessee whose work is known worldwide and even in outer space. Patches designed by the group adorn a spacesuit for the European Space Agency’s Mission Beyond. Arty’s journey doesn’t end in Mote’s Shark Zone; he’s still scheduled to swim in the Gulf of Mexico, too.
