Post members got their own time in the sun this Memorial Day, though, at a dedication ceremony for a mural painted on the side of the VFW Post building on Tuttle Avenue.

Veterans and supporters gathered at the VFW post on May 30 for a dedication to the new “Reveille” mural created by local artist Danielle Glaysher, which depicts soldiers through the ages and honors those who gave their lives for the country.

The dedication ceremony featured words from Mayor Erik Arroyo, Glaysher and donor Richard Karp.

On the run

The Special Olympics Law Enforcement Torch Run has come a long way — literally. Teams of law enforcement officers and Special Olympics athletes have carried the Flame of Hope from Chicago all the way to Florida over the past few weeks, all to light the cauldron and start the 2022 Special Olympics USA Games in Orlando on June 5.

On Wednesday, the run made a stop at Rise and Nye’s ice cream and coffee shop, which employs several people with disabilities.

Wyoming-based Izzy Vijiila and Missouri-based Carrie Pfeiffer ran with the torch before stopping at the shop to celebrate with assembled staff and officers.

The torch is headed next to St. Petersburg.

Together, those five parcels’ taxable value was set at about $5.2 million for 2022 according to the Tax Appraiser records. Builders of the St. Regis project last month received permits for vertical construction, advancing from previous foundation work. Work is expected to wrap up in 2024.

Sarasota Sheriff’s Office deputies are investigating at least one instance of gunfire on Siesta Key on Monday that resulted in an injury to a woman, officials said.

Shots were fired following a fight at Avenida Navarra and Avenida Messina, according to the law enforcement agency. Deputies responded around 4 p.m. to an area near public beach access No. 3.

Witnesses said several shot were heard, and one woman was brought to Sarasota Memorial Hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.

The investigation is continuing.

A Sarasota-area physician has been found guilty of accepting bribes to prescribe a spray containing the highly addictive and sometimes fatal opioid fentanyl.

Dr. Steven Chun, 59, was convicted along with a drug company representative from Tampa for soliciting and accepting kickbacks and bribes in return for writing prescriptions for the pain killer Subsys, often when not medically necessary.

Federal prosecutors, in a statement, call the drug “an expensive form of liquid fentanyl.”

Chun and Daniel Tondre, 52, face five years in federal prison for conspiracy and up to 10 years for each kickback violation. Tondre, also convicted on two counts of identification fraud, could get an additional five years for each of those charges.

According to the statement from the U.S. Attorney’s Office of the Middle District, Chun owned and ran a Sarasota pain management practice where he prescribed “a large volume of Subsys.” Tondre, a sales rep for Insys Therapeutics, the company that manufactured and sold Subsys, worked in Chun’s territory.

Chun was paid between $2,400 and $3,000 for speaking events, which family, friends and repeat attendees came to, sometimes providing false or forged signatures, authorities contended. In exchange, Chun wrote more prescriptions at high dosages.

ing, told commissioners that hardly anything in the financial world is as it should be, attributing a lot of it to actions taken over the 26 months of the COVID-19 pandemic that still affect dollars and cents.

Snaith said that while much of the recent “layer cake of economic problems” can be traced back to the two years following March 2020, unusual events affecting economies are nothing new.

“I keep waiting. I say this time and again. I keep waiting for things to normalize in the economy, and it’s been 18 years since it’s been what I might classify as normal,” Snaith told commissioners at last week’s budget workshop.

Of late, he pointed to an 8.3% inflation rate, difficulties in the labor market and in manufacturers’ supply chains and rising energy bills. He said shutting down all but essential industries in 2020 is stilling causing ripple effects.

“It didn’t seem like there was any thought process in terms of looking at the cost benefit of doing this when these decisions were made,” Snaith said, adding the focus on COVID-19 and shutdown of schools, businesses and more shifted from two weeks to flatten the curve to “two months to bulldoze the economy.”

Snaith said the resulting recession resulted in pent-up demand.

When things reopened, that demand became actual demand, and the economy hasn’t been able to keep up, adding that the influx of trillions of dollars of federal money exacer-

bated issues, potentially leading to an economic downtown in the next 12 months, though not a deep one.

His forecast calls for a slowing of Florida’s economy from a 6.9% rise in state gross domestic product in 2021 to 4.2% in 2022, 2.8% in 2023 and 2.95% in 2024.

Snaith predicts that Sarasota’s real metro GDP will likely slow its growth, moving from $33.3 billion in 2020 to $35.4 billion in 2021, $36.6 billion in 2022, $37.7 billion in 2023 and $38.9 billion in 2024.

“It’s important when you’re doing budgetary planning that, yes, you’re going to be impacted by these budgetary swings,” he said, “but I think the problems here you’re challenged with are more long run in nature.”

He added that keeping that long run in mind is beneficial, pointing to trends going back to 2010 that track with his forecasts for the future.

“As much as you can keep your eye on the horizon, I think, that’s a prudent way to approach the budget going forward,” Snaith said.

Work moves to the traffic circle at U.S. 41 Gulfstream Avenue A new phase of building will bring three 90-day intersection closings.

ork in the roundabout on U.S. 41 and Gulfstream Avenue has entered its latter stages, a phase in which the roundabout itself will begin to take shape.

Although construction on what will be the actual traffic circle has begun, work on the approaches to the circular intersection continues.

During Wednesday’s monthly call to update stakeholders and residents on the project by the Florida Department of Transportation, project engineer Pinky Pakalapati said crews will begin to remove asphalt in the area of the traffic circle as construction continues on the east side of U.S. 41, which will result in the closing of intersections at Palm Avenue, First Street and Second Street for three months.

During the intersection closures, motorists can access U.S. 41 from Cocoanut Avenue.

“The work zone is now moved into the roundabout area, and you can see that all that material has been moved out of that area, and the contractor has started removing the old asphalt that’s in that roundabout construction area,” Pakalapati said. “They started shaping up the roundabout so that they can put some base material in and prepare for the curb in the middle of the roundabout.”

Following the holiday weekend, crews work on Saturdays until the project is complete.

“They are planning to use Saturday as their day for cleanup and gathering their material for the coming week, but there will be activity over the weekends,” Pakalapati said.

The project has experienced delays due to materials and labor shortages.

Concrete makers, for example, have been forced to ration production to serve all projects, if in a diminished capacity. In the past month, paving was delayed for a week when the asphalt plant used by the contractor was temporarily shut down.

“The shortages of material and labor are definitely real,” Pakalapati said. “Because they couldn’t find people they’re struggling, and the people that they have are moving on or going to different companies.

They are definitely struggling with that, but they are doing everything that they can to get this project mov-

ing as fast as they can.”

The project remains on schedule for completion by the end of the year, but when the roundabout opens for traffic, minor cosmetic work will likely continue for several weeks.

“Projected completion is late fall, Pakalapati said. “They’re expecting that to be closer to Thanksgiving or maybe a little bit earlier.

“The roundabout will be functional. We’ll still have some odds and ends and striping, things that might not affect traffic, but the full benefit of the roundabout should be available at that time.”

RINGLING BRIDGE STRIPING Not within the scope of the roundabout project but immediately adjacent to it is the impending project to restripe the Ringling Bridge to accommodate Sarasota Bay Runner trolley operations with a dedicated lane.

During the monthly call to update stockholders and residents on the project, one citizen expressed concerns that the project will cause safety issues by narrowing the two travel lanes in both directions.

Alice Ramos, community outreach manager of Valerin Group on behalf of FDOT, said details will be shared as they emerge.

“There will be adjacent striping right up to our project,” she said.

Ramos said there are no details yet, but they will be revealed as soon as they become available so that everyone knows the plan.

The next update meeting about the roundabout project is scheduled for June 22.

The employee said she asked a customer who was holding a drink cup in the check out line if he intended to pay. The customer yelled in the employee’s face but did not touch the employee. Sarasota Police in May completed a 10-month program to improve pedestrian and bicyclist safety in the city, focusing on several key roadways and speaking to more than 500 people on the importance of obeying traffic laws.

Based on crash data involving serious injuries, officers in the department’s High Visibility Enforcement program spent time on South Tamiami Trail from Siesta Drive to Bahia Vista Street, along U.S. 301 from 16th Street to Myrtle Street, and along North Tamiami Trail from May Lane to Sylvan Lane. In addition to normal patrols, officers were tasked with spending additional time educating drivers, pedestrians and cyclists and enforcing traffic laws in those corridors.

Among the actions that drew officers’ attention: improperly crossing the road; failing to cross at a designated crosswalk; riding in the wrong direction and crossing an intersection diagonally.

Officers also spoke to drivers about speeding, sharing the road, giving the right of way to pedestrians and bicyclists, dealing with visually impaired individuals and people on mobility devices.

“We want our residents and visitors who are driving, walking or bicycling in the city of Sarasota to remain safe when it

Within the first three hours of symptoms, the majority of patients can be effectively treated with the clotdissolving drug tPA at the nearest designated stroke center.

program in North Port, said the third designation streamlines and standardizes stroke care across the system and in different areas.

“The patients have a quicker access to fast treatment when they are suffering a stroke,” Concha said.

“Then they can be transferred for a higher level of care to the appropriate facilities, but at least we can get to the stroke as quickly as possible, and we know that as we do that the outcomes are better.”

The SMH stroke network offers the full contigent of stroke care, including inpatient and outpatient rehabilitation programs to help people recover from the effects of a stroke. The programs include education, prevention and an outpatient disease management clinic to help people prevent secondary strokes.

“A comprehensive stroke center gives patients a better chance to walk out with minimal to no disabilities,” Concha said. “We are able to offer treatments above and beyond the standard three hours after the onset of a stroke.”

Joe Biden, you are crushing the American people … ... destroying our wealth, our way of life, our happiness and our liberty.

Your plan is pathetic. Rise up, Americans.

hen you see and walk among the 25,000 gravestones at the National Cemetery in Sarasota on Memorial Day, you cannot help but be overcome by the profound significance.

You think of all those Americans who volunteered and served in our military to preserve our way of life, to keep all of us from being the slaves of murderous tyrants. And you especially think of those who gave their lives so we could live free.

But once you drive out of the cemetery and pass a service station posting gasoline at $4.30 a gallon, a disturbing, maddening reality comes back into focus: We are at war in our own homeland.

Our own government is attacking and destroying the people they allegedly serve.

Our non compos mentis president and the unelected, power-craved puppeteers pulling his strings and filling his teleprompters are killing and crushing us.

Not with guns, but with intentional, tyrannical decisions designed to tear down the United States that we love. It is increasingly evident they want us not to be free, but to live under their oppressive rule of centralized power elites and globalists who despise individual freedom and capitalism, who despise government by the people, for the people.

If it were otherwise, they would be working at warp speed to reverse course, not by the Biden way of always too little, too late, too feeble and oh-so tired tropes.

Just think about all of Biden’s malevolent, painful actions we have been forced to endure for the past 18 months. You know the list well, and they are all government induced.

But the most devastating of these actions to every American have been inflation and the price of fuel.

They are especially decimating America’s poor and middle class.

If you combine the 11% increase in grocery food prices this year and the 112% increase in gas prices since 2020, they are sucking an additional $3,500 to $4,000 a year from the annual finances of paycheck-topaycheck American families.

Everything is going up. And these price increases will continue to go up for months to come. As employers give raises to try to keep

employees’ wages close to the rate of rising prices, all of these businesses will pass on rising costs to customers. The spiral will continue.

This will inflict even more strain and pressure on Americans, lowering their standards of living while increasing frustration and despair.

This despair, declining living standards and the desperation of watching your money buy less and less will tear down even more the social well-being of our nation.

Crime is certain to increase. Desperate men do desperate things.

The simple truth is, when you destroy people’s wealth, you destroy their happiness and liberty.

This is the war Americans have had no control over for 18 months.

And to make matters worse, Biden’s plan to fix this economic disaster will do nothing to help.

Help is needed now. When there is an urgent, burning crisis, you expect leadership to take quick, decisive action. Stop the patient from bleeding to death.

But if you read President Biden’s plan for fighting inflation, there is nothing in it that conveys a sense of urgency; nothing that would make anyone cheer: “This guy knows what he is doing!”

To the contrary, Biden’s plan that he spelled out in Tuesday’s Wall Street Journal is pathetic.

He said, “We need to take every practical step … to boost the productive capacity of our economy over time” (italics added).

Over time? How about now?

As he has throughout this crisis, he blames the high cost of fuel on Putin, even though prices have been going up since 2020. He pats himself on the back for the “largest release from global oil reserves in history.” And he wants Congress to give more subsidies and tax credits

to renewable energy producers and users and “accelerate our transition from energy produced by autocrats.”

Here’s what all that means: He wants more government intervention in the economy. He wants to take more money out of the pockets of the people who can least afford it and give tax breaks for energy sources that will do nothing to help the poor, middle class and truck drivers drive their gas-powered vehicles that they can hardly afford.

What you give to one (tax credits), you must take away from another (confiscate even more of your wealth).

Biden provides no hint of doing everything he can to unleash America’s energy producers. Instead, he and his puppeteers continue to force their climate change dreams and lies on Americans, punishing the very people who can least afford it, depriving the poorest of what they need to survive.

Eighty percent of the U.S. economy runs on oil, natural gas and coal.

Biden and his puppeteers obviously are determined to use their powers to cut off the fuel that allows us to have the standard of living we have.

Who are they serving?

Read on in Biden’s plan and it is the usual Cheesecake Factory menu of government programs, regulations, spending and intervention: more fuel economy regulations for gas-powered cars and trucks, more taxpayer dollars devoted to charging stations, more tax subsidies for automakers and e-car buyers, price controls on prescription drugs, government intervention into agriculture, subsidies to build more socalled affordable homes, forced and subsidized reductions in child care and long-term elder care costs.

And, of course, he says, “e should end the outrageous unfairness in the tax code,” which is code for higher taxes.

Every one of his prescriptions will benefit a few at the expense of the many, take from one and give to another. History has shown time and again, and certainly has shown us now, more government, more intervention and more spending from Washington, D.C., always makes things worse.

Joe Biden’s plan won’t save the people who need help most.

And at the rate the U.S. economy is falling, we cannot wait for the November elections or the 2024 presidential election. Even if Republicans win this November, they will face a Democratic president who will obstruct a change in direction. No one knows how far down we can go by 2024.

Americans should take this attack on our way of life no more. We should demand action that reverses the Biden economic agenda. If Biden and his puppeteers truly cared about the American people, if they were truly public servants and not power-hungry tyrants, they would let the free market and American ingenuity run free.

TELL BIDEN, CONGRESS: WE WON’T TAKE IT ANYMORE! Short of revolution, one course Americans have to effect change in harmful government policies is to demand it from our elected leaders.

If you are sick of the wealth-destroying inflation, gas prices and economic direction of the country, let President Biden, your senators and congressman know.

Tell all of them: PRESIDENT BIDEN: You are destroying our way of life, our wealth, our happiness and our liberty with destructive, tyrannical policies.

We cannot and will not take it anymore!

Quit obstructing our energy independence and making us poor. Unleash the American energy industry to bring down the price of gas.

Do it now! Serve the people!

he Greater Sarasota Chamber of Commerce honored its local leaders at the Celebrate Outstanding Leadership Awards luncheon on May 25.

Sarasota Chamber staff and business representatives met at Michael’s On East for the annual luncheon that started with a half-hour of mingling before it was time for the program to start.

The luncheon recognizes a community leader’s body of work throughout their career, a community leadership endeavor and commitment to the Leadership Sarasota program.

Joy Mahler of Big Brothers Big Sisters of Sun Coast received the Lifetime of Leadership Award, Deputy City Manager Pat Robinson was given the Impact in Action award, and Susan Flynn of Bon Eau Enterprises received the Leadership Sarasota Dedication Award.

Five Sarasota County Schools teachers are the latest recipients of the Barancik Foundation’s Ripple Effect awards, emblematic of their positive impact on their students’ lives.

The awards are presented twice a year, on the birthdays of Chuck Barancik in May and Margery Barancik in September, to commend educators for their innovative efforts in fostering cultural change among their students and peers.

The winners, announced Thursday, were: n Tessa Healy, Wilkinson Elementary n Megan Wink, Lakeview Elementary n Michelle Rivas, Gulf Gate Elementary n Dorothy Rieger, McIntosh Middle n Melissa Dweck, Sarasota High “In our eyes, teachers are superheroes, and this is our way of recognizing them for what they do each day,” said Teri A. Hansen, president and CEO of Barancik Foundation.

Each teacher received a $5,000 award to spend on professional development experiences, material and equipment for their classrooms.

The teachers were surprised by ceremonies at their schools.

Sarasota County principals nominated one teacher to be considered for the award. A committee made up of community leaders then identified the top candidates.

“We are thankful for the hard work, compassion and dedication of all our teachers and look forward to seeing the bright future that results from the ripple effects they set in motion today,” said Brennan Asplen, superintendent of Sarasota County Schools.

Previous winners have used the awards for classroom improvement projects, professional development workshops across the country and items like musical equipment and robotic gear to help pique students’ interest in the classroom.

The Baranciks founded the organization in 2014 to create and fund areas of education, humanitarian causes, arts and culture, the environment and medical research.

For two weeks, dozens of local restaurants will be putting their best meals forward at fixed prices.

ou might have seen the quaint, 100-yearold cottages resting on the east side of Tamiami Trail, just beckoning you in for a bite to eat or a glass of wine. And now you’ve got the perfect reason to make a reservation.

The Reserve Retreat, housed in two buildings from the old Ringling Estate, is one of dozens of restaurants taking part in Savor Sarasota, a two-week extravaganza that takes local restaurants and puts them in the forefront of the consciousness of the local consumer.

Savor, which runs from June 1 to June 14, will give restaurant customers a chance to sample a prix-fixe, multicourse menu for lunch and dinner at affordable prices.

Lunch at any of the participating restaurants will cost $20, and dinner will run $35.

“It’s just as much for the locals as it is for the visitors,” says Virginia Haley, president of Visit Sarasota County. “There’s that chance to try restaurants you really haven’t gone out to try in the last couple years.

It’s important for us because if locals know more about our restaurants, when they bump into a visitor, they’re able to give good recommendations.”

And it’s equally important for the restaurant community to get their names in circulation.

For the Reserve folks, it’s a chance to introduce themselves to the public in a new capacity. Jessica Simmons, owner of the Reserve, says the last couple years have been a time of reinvention. The eatery opened in 2017 as more of a boutique hotel with a coffee and wine bar. The hotel is still part of the business, but in February 2020, Simmons hired chef Richard Smith, who had worked in Sarasota restaurants like Quay and the Bayou Tavern.

Smith helped design a new menu, and the restaurant did well upon opening. But then came COVID, and the Reserve had to figure out how to get customers through the door. Simmons and General Manager Sarah Edwards had to temporarily shelve the reinvented menu and do whatever they could to stay afloat during the pandemic.

“The team was amazing,” says Simmons. “We didn’t close; we were able to do barbecue and delivery. Customers and people in the neighborhood were so supportive. They kept calling.

“That’s really when we learned that the brand we have here at the Reserve is higher quality. Instead of having a lot of people and volume going through, we learned that it’s better to have beautiful food and a much-smaller menu. It really handed us an opportunity to figure out what would work and what could be special to make people want to come here.”

Smith, born and raised in Sarasota, operates a oneman kitchen and makes everything at the restaurant from scratch.

Simmons says the interior of the Reserve is meant to evoke a living room complete with a bookshelf, and she wants customers to get comfortable while they wait for Smith’s creations to come out of the kitchen.

“We had been on Savor a while ago, but it was with a much smaller lunch menu,” says Simmons. “Now we have the chef, and we can be proud of every meal that comes out the door. Savor has always been terrific to the community. I’ve been a part of the community SEE FEAST, PAGE 14A

for many years, and as a consumer, I love when Savor comes out. I go to all the restaurants in town. When I saw the opportunity, I said, ‘Let’s do this.

Let’s showcase what we can do.’”

Smith’s Savor dinner menu has given plenty of options to its hungry guests. Visitors can choose between the Ringling Salad, Pesto Pasta with Chicken, the Asian Delight or the Chicken Marsala as their main courses; Smith says that the Ringling Salad is a classic, with mixed greens topped with candied walnuts, bacon, strawberries and blue cheese crumbles.

But his Asian Delight is something that comes straight out of his own mind. It’s a choice of blackened salmon or seared tuna served with Asian veggies and fried rice.

“I tweaked it here and there with spices to give it that Asian flair,” says Smith. “I enjoy garnishing my plates.

That’s always going to be a highlight of my dishes. With the salmon, you don’t want to overcook it and dry it out. It’s probably one of the easier fish to cook. You can get away with the cooking time on it if you’re not a skilled cooker. Just a little spice; it absorbs spice. Salmon is a great dish no matter what you’re doing with it.”

Another newcomer to the Savor game is Tripletail Seafood and Spirits, an offering from the team that brought you the Gecko’s Grill & Pub franchise. Tripletail opened in February 2021, so it didn’t have an opportunity to showcase itself during Savor in 2021.

Executive chef Trae Peavey, who worked as a kitchen manager at Gecko’s for 10 years, has been presiding over the development of Tripletail. He says much of the menu is an elevated take on its sister restaurant, Dry Dock, and the restaurant is housed in the original location of Gecko’s at The Landings Plaza.

“It’s really fun to see people that have been to Gecko’s come here,” he says. “They walk in for the first time and see the change, and you can see their eyes light up at how different it is.”

Peavey, who has been working in kitchens since he was 16 years old, says the restaurant got its name from one of the area’s signature offerings.

The Atlantic tripletail is a fish known to local fisherman as one of the more plentiful and tasty in the Sarasota waters.

All of Tripletail’s fish come from Lockhart Seafood in Tarpon Springs, and Peavey says his servers are quizzed on how many tails the tripletail actually has.

It’s a trick question: The fish has only one tail, but it has two fins that appear to be tails.

“They don’t congregate like tuna or snapper would,” says Peavey of the top-feeding fish. “You can’t just go to a hole and pull out a bunch of tri-

pletail. People often overlook them because it looks like a plastic bag.

They like to hang out around buoys and crap traps; crab season is the heavier season for tripletail because there are crab traps everywhere.”

The tripletail dinner, of course, is one of the signature offerings on the restaurant’s menu.

Peavey also added a seafood pasta, chicken marsala, bourbon-glazed salmon and coconut shrimp dinner.

The shrimp, he says, comes with a pina colada sauce so good that he’s seen bar patrons ask for extra sauce and then tell the bartender to make it into a drink.

But it’s the tripletail, the fish that lent its name to the restaurant, that stands out. Peavey says the dish by itself represents 12% of his restaurant’s sales, which makes it a perfect thing to put on the menu and attract new customers.

“We put it over our yellow rice,” says Peavey. “It has a lot of umami, that savory, slightly sweet and slightly salty flavor. It’s a turmeric yellow rice, not saffron. The tripletail gets a light coating of flour, pan

seared. Then it goes on top of the rice, and it gets a lemon beurreblanc on top. We use a citrus syrup; it has lemon juice, orange juice and pineapple juice. Then we reduce that with sugar and white wine. We take that, mix it with heavy cream and add butter to it.”

Haley, who has seen Savor grow and mature over the years, says that this year is special because it marks a return to full capacity.

In 2020, Savor was switched lastminute to carry-out only, and last year it was a blend of sitting down and taking food to go. This year, she hopes that restaurants return to full dining rooms at a time of year that used to be pretty barren.

Haley says that the best part of restaurant week is trying new dishes and new restaurants, and she revels in hearing positive feedback.

“My favorite was a couple probably 10 years ago who emailed us,” she says. “They said they think of this as being on Cruise Ship Sarasota, and they tried a different one every night.

They loved it and looked forward to it every year, and I love that image.”

onnie Schindewolf isn’t about to take the same advice she gave her students.

A drama teacher for 25 years and now a Bradenton resident, Schindewolf has enjoyed a productive second act as a playwright, and she’s come to the conclusion that a lot of writing advice is bad advice.

The dramatist has written more than 50 10-minute plays and eight full-length dramas over the past 15 years and owes her transformation in part to a local organization.

Schindewolf says she drew strength and confidence from participating in Theatre Odyssey’s Ten-Minute Play Festival, which will celebrate its 17th iteration next week.

“They did my first performance of a 10-minute play in 2007,” says Schindewolf. “That really gave me

the courage to send my work out.

So, I sent started sending my work out and had quite a bit of success, mostly with 10-minute plays.”

The playwright says that she’s had 10-minute plays produced in 26 states, and her work has been performed in such far-flung places as London, Dubai and Australia.

The strange part, she says, is she could never find the time to write as a drama teacher in St. Louis.

“Teachers had summers off, and most of the summer I would spend reading scripts looking for something to direct or looking for something for my students to direct,” she says. “I read so many plays where I thought, ‘Wow, some of this is just junk. I can write better than this.’ It was a goal of mine for a long time before I started. And when I look back, I think, ‘You know what? If I’d have wanted to do it that bad, I should’ve just made the time.’”

Schindewolf ’s latest play,

“Ancestry,” is one of eight plays that will be mounted by Theatre Odyssey’s Ten-Minute Play Festival, and she’s won best play on two occasions at the festival. When she looks back on the things she taught her students, she says she’s not sure there’s any utility in trying to impose structure on a dramatist.

“Now I actually don’t teach any play writing, nor do I want to,” she says. “I just feel like it’s not an art you can put rules to and ask people to follow. For example, I read this in a book, and I told my students, ‘Don’t try to write a serious 10-minute play because there’s just not enough time for the audience to

What makes a good 10-minute play, and how is it different from a full-length work?

Schindewolf has had time to think about the complexities of playwriting from a number of perspectives and been able to nail it down with a little bit of precision.

“A 10-minute play can be a germ for something bigger, but usually not a full length,” she says. “I have expanded 10 minutes into a one-act play, and I have changed one-acts into 10 minutes. The fulllength plays that I write, it’s a difference of having much more depth to the characters and more subplots that have to be worked out. But there’s certainly a comparison: A 10-minute play has a beginning, middle and an end, and so does a full-length play.

“They both have to have a main character who is facing a main conflict. The conflict has to be resolved at the end whether the main character gets what he wants or doesn’t get what he wants.”

Most of Schindewolf’s plays are in the fantasy genre, but they start with a bit of reality. She says she wrote one play, “The Grout Fairy,” because she was beleaguered and exhausted from cleaning all of the grout in her house.

Her latest play, “Ancestry,” is based on her daughter’s real-life decision to take a genetics test to learn more about her background.

The play is a comedy, she says, but she doesn’t want to give away too much of the plot.

The point is that she took a reallife episode and turned it into drama.

“My brain just kept working about what her results were going to be,” she says. “I can’t remember if I actually dreamt what they may be, but I came up with this crazy idea of the results she was going to get. My poor daughter, who goes to these plays and sees them. She knows that most of it isn’t true, but that I got the idea from something she’s been through.”

Now that she’s no longer teaching, does Schindewolf ever hear from her students? Of course she does, given the nature of our connected world.

In fact, she had one student resurface on an online group called The Playwright’s Marketing Binge.

“A student came back, and I recognized his name,” she says. “He says, ‘I don’t think you’re going to remember me, but I was one of your drama students, and I gave you a hard time. But I just want you to know you were influential to me, and I’m in New York trying to make it as an actor and playwright.’

“It kind of blew me away. He admitted it, but he must not have been too bad. I remembered him, but I didn’t remember him as being particularly difficult in class.”

develop empathy for the character.’

“The first time I gave that rule, a couple students challenged it and broke the rule, and they wrote wonderful dramas. I don’t follow the rules I taught to them because I don’t think they were good ones.”

The Ten-Minute Play Festival is open to writers throughout Florida, but Theatre Odyssey always works to mine local candidates. One of the writers in the festival lives in Lakeland, and two are transplants to Sarasota or Bradenton.

Schindewolf says she knows the two local playwrights, Lyle Landon and Keith Whalen, from her Sarasota Playwrights group.

Tom Aposporos, a co-founder and director emeritus of Theatre Odyssey, says the quality of playwright seems to improve every year. This year, says Aposporos, the festival received a record 106 submissions.

“We can see from the plays that we’re attracting very good playwrights,” he says. “One of our play submitters last year was a two-time Obie winner. We think that playwrights from all over the country must be bookmarking the Theatre Odyssey website.

“We’re getting plays submitted almost before we’re calling for plays publicly. We’ve been at it for a number of years now, and I like to believe we’ve developed a reputation for producing good-quality plays on stage.”

The first Ten-Minute Play Festival was a single-night, sold-out event in 2006. Now it’s grown to the point that it takes four days, and the plays will be performed at the Jane B. Cook Theatre.

For Schindewolf, who has had 14 plays produced by Theatre Odyssey, it’s becoming old hat. She says there was a point it would’ve been nerve-wracking to see her play produced, but since she’s had so much success with Theatre Odyssey, it’s more exciting now.

“There’s not the fear that you’ve got to win, but it’s that you want your play to come out as a good piece of art,” she says. “You’re happy to be in the festival because you know it’s an accomplishment.

You’ve seen the story of Robin Hood, but have you seen it reimagined as a musical? “Hood,” an original adaptation by Douglas Carter Beane and Lewis Flinn, will begin its preview run at the Asolo Repertory Theatre on June 3. The show, which ran in Dallas, has been further developed for its Sarasota run. Flinn wrote the music and lyrics, and Beane, a fivetime Tony nominee, wrote the book.

The show’s official opening night is June 11; it will run until June 26.

arasota came together to remember those who gave all during the annual Memorial Day parade on May 30.

The parade, canceled last year because of the pandemic – though veterans held a smaller, informal gathering – returned in earnest with a morning march put together by the city of Sarasota and the Sarasota Patriotic Observance Committee.

Main Street was filled with veterans groups, local military academy members, school bands and supporting organizations marching toward J.D. Hamel Park to the cheers of locals excited to show their patriotism.

“Everything you do today, please take a moment to remember the price that was paid,” Sonny Bywaters of American Legion Post 30 said to start the ceremony.

The day’s events concluded with a reverent — and shaded — ceremony at J.D. Hamel Park. The audience assembled under trees and a tent area to hear from Sarasota city representatives and veterans supporters. Eugene Lyons, a 98-year-old Sarasota resident and World War II Navy veteran, was on hand with the day’s speakers and honored at the ceremony. Many of the children at the event got up to shake Lyons’ hand early in the ceremony.

Lyon’s son Chris came from Fort Lauderdale to join him at the ceremony. The father and son pair were also at last year’s unofficial event.

“We didn’t expect this (ceremony),” Chris Lyons said.

“There aren’t too many (World War II veterans) left.”

Sean Burns and Elizabeth Strople, Army National Guard members, have been eyeing the march for some time.

Burns said he works with the military funeral honors program in Florida most days the march has been held so hasn’t been able to attend.

This year was different. He decided to take off work with Strople to finally join in the walk. The pair decided to up the ante by carrying heavy backpacks to make it a tougher go.

“We’ve done way longer things than 5Ks in the Army just with basic training,” Burns said. “We couldn’t do a 5K with nothing on our backs.”

The SRQ Vets 7th Annual 5K Memorial Day Hike brought hundreds of veterans and civilians to J.D. Hamel Park for a morning walk through Main Street and other downtown Sarasota streets in honor of fallen soldiers. The event benefits SRQ Vets’ programs providing resources for local veterans.

Co-founder Bill Sterbinsky welcomed the assembled crowd and reiterated the reason he, Mayor Erik Arroyo and others would be marching.

“This is what we believe and what we love,” Sterbinsky said. “Today we make sure we show (our fallen veterans) that we earn their sacrifice. They can’t be here with their brothers and

Where are they now?

Nearly a year removed from the Olympics, here is a look at what the area’s four representatives have accomplished since the Games.

lympic athletes typically get a lot of attention every four years when their sports are the hottest thing on television for a month.

After that, things go quiet for 47 months until the next Olympics. Unlike other ath-

letes, Olympians don’t have their highlights shown on SportsCenter each night, even though they keep competing while the Olympics are away. When an area such as Sarasota has four representatives at the Games, as it did at the Tokyo Olympics last summer, it feels wrong to ignore their talents for four years. More constant updates are required.

In that spirit, here is a rundown of what Sarasota’s Olympians have been up to since making the area proud last summer.

Mary Tucker, rifle

Clark Dean, rowing

Olympics refresher: Tucker took silver in the Mixed Air Rifle alongside partner Lucas Kozeniesky at the 2020 Olympics. Tucker also finished sixth in the Women’s 10-meter Air Rifle.

Since the Games: A junior at Kentucky, Tucker and her Wildcat rifle teammates repeated as NCAA champions in March in Colorado Springs, edging Texas Christian 4,739-4,736 — the highest team score in the championship’s history. It was the Wildcats’ fourth championship in program history, and Tucker was a large part of it. She had the highest score of any shooter in the team competition, racking up 1,191 points. She was also named the NCAA individual aggregate champion for her performance in the individual small bore and air rifle competitions.

Olympics refresher: Dean competed in the Men’s Four alongside U.S. teammates Michael Grady, Andrew Reed and Anders Weiss. Their boat finished fifth (5:48.85) in the final, 6.09 seconds behind gold-medal winner Australia.

Since the Games: Dean has been completing his senior year at Harvard. He’s a stalwart on the Crimson’s first varsity Men’s Eight boat and helped Harvard win the Adams Cup over Penn and Navy on April 23.

Dean and Harvard will compete in the 2022 Intercollegiate Rowing Association National Championships June 3-5 on Mercer Lake in West Windsor, New Jersey.

Emma Weyant, swimming Olympics refresher: Weyant earned a silver medal in the women’s 400-meter individual medley at the Olympics (4:32.76), finishing 0.68 seconds behind Japan’s Yui Ohashi (4:32.08).

Since the Games: Weyant, who deferred her enrollment to Virginia one year to focus on her Olympic training, participated in her freshman season for the Cavaliers. Weyant finished second in the 500-yard freestyle (4:34.99) and fourth in the 400yard individual medley (4:03.17) at the 2022 Women’s NCAA Championships in March in Atlanta, helping the Cavs capture their second-straight team title.

Weyant is not done, either. She will represent Team USA at the 2022 FINA World Championships June 18-July 3 in Budapest, Hungary, by swimming in the 400-meter individual medley, her silver medal event from Tokyo. She will be joined by two Virginia teammates who also medaled in Tokyo, Kate Douglass and Alex Walsh, as well as Cavaliers Coach Todd DeSorbo.

Jake Ilardi, Skateboarding Olympics refresher: Ilardi finished 11th out of 20 skaters in the qualifying round of the Men’s Street competition, failing to reach the finals.

Since the Games: On May 16, Ilardi and his brother, Nate Ilardi — who films all of Jake Ilardi’s competitions and turns them into highlight videos — were honored by the city of Sarasota for their contributions to the area and had the day named after them. The Ilardi brothers raised more than $15,000 for renovations to Payne Skate Park last year and consistently bring attention to the park as an important part of Ilardi’s development as a skateboarder.

As far as Ilardi’s skateboarding goes, he finished third at the 28th annual Tampa Pro event on May 1, taking home $3,000 and earning a spot in the Street League Skateboarding qualifying event in Los Angeles on June 5. The SLS Championship Tour is recognized as the world’s premier professional street skateboarding competition, akin to golf’s PGA Tour. Ilardi is ranked third in The Boardr’s Street global rankings.

When I visited the place in 2019, I played “Beat Saber,” which is a rhythm game akin to “Guitar Hero” except instead of playing a plastic guitar, you use your hands to destroy blocks flying at you and the rest of your body — all of it — to dodge walls that block your way. It’s all set to popular music from the past and present.

There are multiple difficulty levels; even the normal level will tire you out after a few songs, but the expert levels will have you panting on the floor. I promise, it’s a good workout. You can even grab a drink at Mysterium’s bar afterward to cool down. An hour-long VR arcade session — which gives a lot more options than just “Beat Saber,” by the way — is $35.

Fun with less sun I

recently bought a new phone charger for my car, the kind you mount on your dashboard. It uses Apple’s MagSafe technology to power up my phone via magnets and an internal charging coil.

Or at least that’s the idea. On Tuesday, it was so hot outside — and thus, so hot in my car — that as soon as I placed my phone on the metal charger, it gave me the “your iPhone needs to cool down” message and would not charge. In other words, the Florida summer has rendered my purchase moot, and technically, it’s not even summer yet, so the worst is yet to come.

I should have known. This will be my sixth summer in Florida. The heat always has me dreading them.

The people and sports in this area, of course, cancel out that negative, but the fact remains: Even for Florida veterans, summer can be a lot.

That’s why I like to give suggestions on how people can remain active during the summer while staying relatively cool. They are quite good suggestions and, as such, should be taken quite seriously (or at least the first two should be).

TRY PADDLING LESSONS AT NATHAN BENDERSON PARK

Dragon boats sound like something out of a fantasy war movie, but in reality, hopping in one is a great way to spend a day on the water.

As in sweep rowing, each person in the boat takes one oar (or a paddle in this case) and moves the boat in sync with the other rowers. There’s a steerer in the back and a drummer in the front keeping the tempo.

And yes, there’s a dragon head on the front of the boat. It completely rules. The sport originated in the Pearl River Delta region of China

more than 2,000 years ago; now 89 countries have organizations recognized by the International Dragon Boat Federation. In fact, the IBDF Club Crew World Championships are coming to Nathan Benderson Park July 18-22.

Now is the perfect time to get acquainted with the sport. Benderson Park’s head paddling coach, Angela Long, is beloved by her athletes and will teach you everything you need to know. Trust me. I took a lesson with the park’s paddlers in 2019. It was difficult, but fulfilling.

Plus, if you ever get too hot, you can roll off the boat and into the cool, refreshing water. Just watch out for the alligators! I’m sure no one will yell at you for ruining the boat’s rhythm.

ESCAPE FROM IT ALL

I swear I have never been as stressed watching something as I was watching episode four of the hit show’s new season, which dropped over the weekend, and thus have never paced around my apartment as much. Your pedometer will be thrilled. Getting to hear Kate Bush’s classic anthem “Running Up that Hill (A Deal with God)” a bunch of times doesn’t hurt, either, as far as motivation goes. Get ready to want to run everywhere, sun and sweat be damned.

TURN A SPLASH FOUNTAIN INTO YOUR PERSONAL GYM

This suggestion would have been easier a few years ago, but the splash fountain at Bayfront Park is currently under renovation, so it’s a no-go. That’s OK. We won’t let a little hurdle like that deter us, not when a splash fountain workout — the ultimate way to get fit and look like you just emerged from the sea like Aquaman — is the prize. So, we’re going to take a short drive up to the Bradenton Riverwalk’s Family Fun Zone, which is bigger and therefore better for our workout needs, anyway.

What is great about this location, besides the view, is that it has water jets that shoot up from the ground.

SIT IN YOUR CAR WITH NO A/C

I was not kidding about the inside of my car being more or less a sauna. Recently I got in my car and my glasses fogged up. In my car.

Not outside of it. Sheer insanity.

But why not use this insanity to your advantage? I sat in my car for 10 minutes with the A/C off as a test. I sweated through my shirt. I had to wipe sweat off my forehead to keep it out of my eyes. I sweated more in those 10 minutes than during almost any workout I have ever done. If sweating alone is not the result you desire, you can always move to the back, lie down and do some hot yoga.

Now, I know what you’re thinking: Isn’t this column about staying cool while being active? Yes. While those 10 minutes are going to be excruciating, the advantage is that you don’t actually have to go anywhere. You can just head back inside your house and hit the shower. Boom, you’re done.
