Blessing of the pets Temple Emanu-El is typically a place of worship for all sorts of people, but May 14 brought in a few four-legged friends for the annual Blessing of the Animals event.

Rabbis Brenner Glickman and Michael Shefrin led the annual blessing, which featured temple members bringing their beloved dogs, cats and other pets, and spoke about the importance of animals in Judaism. Temple members spoke to the rabbis with their pets in tow before having them blessed.

Guests also enjoyed pet portraits, a dress-up area for the animals and free vet consultations from a Temple Emanu-El member.

Unveiling ‘Integrity’ The “Integrity” artwork, which depicts the iconic image of Marines raising the American flag at Iwo Jima in World War II, has been on display at Patriot Plaza at Sarasota National Cemetery but now has a new home.

With the help of the Patterson Foundation, the artwork has been donated to Goodwill Manasota’s Veterans Services Program office.

The artwork was unveiled

by Patterson Foundation and Goodwill Manasota representatives during a ceremony on May 25.

Traffic circle work shifts roadways

“I rarely disagree with staff on these things, but on this particular one there’s already two stop signs. I don’t see why it hurts to have it a four-way stop.”

Construction of the roundabout at U.S. 41 and Gulfstream Avenue will mean the closure of three intersections for several months.

The Florida Department of Transportation reports the intersections of Palm Avenue, First Street and Second Street at U.S. 41 will be closed in both directions beginning this week. Exiting to downtown via Cocoanut Avenue and Fruitville Road is recommended.

Other work on the roundabout includes installing temporary asphalt along U.S. 41 between Gulfstream Avenue and Fruitville Road in the current work zone, reducing the Ritz-Carlton Drive entrance to one lane for brick paver work, installing sod on U.S. 41 and Gulfstream Avenue where recent sidewalk and curb was installed, and installing temporary asphalt and traffic separator.

The sidewalk at the northwest corner of U.S. 41 at Gulfstream Avenue is also closed. Pedestrian paths are available via U.S. 41 Multi-Use Recreational Trail along Ritz-Carlton Drive.

The $8.1 million roundabout project is scheduled for completion in the fall.

enderson Development, the developer behind The Mall at University Town Center, has bought Crossings at Siesta Key for $25.1 million.

The mall, previously known as Westfield Siesta Key and Southgate Mall, measures 439,958 square feet and sits on 26.97 acres. Its tenants include anchors Macy’s and CMX CinéBistro, as well as Connors Steak & Seafood, Talbots, LensCrafters, Loft and Chico’s.

statement that “the mall complements our local holdings.”

The purchase is the latest twist for a mall that’s seen its fair share of them.

Unibail-Rodamco-Westfield announced in December 2020 that O’Connor Capital Partners, a New York-based private equity firm, had taken over the Westfield Siesta Key mall.

URW, which at one point also owned Sarasota Square — about 7 miles south of the Crossings — and other malls along the Gulf Coast and across the country,

began ridding itself of properties in the United States last year.

The company referred to the Crossings at Siesta Key as a “non-core” asset in its year-end 2020 financial statements.

In 2003, Westfield bought the Crossings at Siesta Key for $62 million. A decade later, it failed to take decisive action to keep anchor Saks Fifth Avenue from leaving, and numerous inline tenants, from Pottery Barn to Williams-Sonoma, exercised kick-out clauses in their leases and left as well.

Body of missing swimmer found The body of a 24-year-old swimmer reported missing Saturday evening at Lido Beach was recovered Sunday, about 24 hours later, from the waters off of Longboat Key, police said.

Everliz Valentina Vega Medina, a Venezualan, was reported missing when a friend returned to shore after a swim but she did not. Police said there is no reason to suspect foul play. Family members were notified after the discovery at around 9 p.m. Sunday.

Sarasota Police, the U.S. Coast Guard and other law enforcement agencies took part in the search, beginning Saturday night. Longboat Key police were called Sunday evening to join the search.

On Monday morning, Sarasota police reported the body of Medina had been recovered.

ith plans for its new theater in Lakewood Ranch recently scrapped, The Players Centre for Performing Arts is still in search of a permanent home.

After last week’s public hearing before the Sarasota City Commission on a proposed lease agreement for the Sarasota Municipal Auditorium, the nearly century-old theater group appears no closer to a solution.

In late March, Lakewood Ranch parent company Schroeder-Manatee Ranch announced it had terminated its agreement with The Players to build a performing arts center in Waterside Place. That came after The Players informed Lakewood Ranch Commercial Realty, a subsidiary of SMR, that it was it was in negotiations with the city about moving its operations to the auditorium.

Failing to gain support from commissioners for that move, The Players is still a seeking a permanent location.

The Players CEO William Skaggs proposed a 30-year lease at $100 a year and in return would invest $6 million in new retractable seating and other upgrades. The Players would also take over management of the facility, removing an annual expense of $72,000 from the city’s books.

That figure doesn’t cover the total costs associated with the property: Even as the city projects an increase of more than $190,000 in rental revenue at the Municipal Auditorium and Bayfront Community Center in fiscal year 2022, the budget still anticipates the facilities will have an operating deficit of $266,649.

Skaggs’ proposal was met with a mix of support and objection.

Paul Ratner, general manager of the Sarasota Film Festival, said it also is adequately qualified to operate the facility. But the death blow to the deal — Commissioner Hagen Brody’s motion to move forward with the agreement was not seconded — was perhaps delivered by Bay Park Conservancy CEO Bill Waddill, who presented commissioners with a copy of an amended agreement with the city that specified future negotiations for a plan to transition programming of the facility to his organization.

“We support the idea of keeping The Players downtown and support the idea of The Players on the site,” Waddill said. “We just are not convinced that they are the right management partner for the facility, and we’re recommending that we separate management of the facility from the users of the facility.”

A.G. Lafley, CEO and founding member of the Sarasota Bayfront Planning Organization, urged commissioners to take a longer-range view of the auditorium.

“The Municipal Auditorium is arguably the most important existing park building on the 53-acre site, the only indoor venue with the size and versatility to support park activities, programs and events,” Lafley said. “Every public park in America, particularly one the size, scale and scope of The Bay, needs a viable indoor facility to accommodate climate and weather realities.

“In Sarasota, it rains more than 100 days a year. Ninety days every year see temperatures of 90 or above, and high humidity is the norm from at least June through September.

“At these times the Bay Park Conservancy needs an option to move activities indoors. The Municipal Auditorium is the only real option.”

When he made his motion, Brody told commissioners that if The Players invested $6 million in the Munic-

ipal Auditorium, it would need to manage it. Other commissioners voiced concerns that other regular uses of the facility could be squeezed out by the deal.

After Brody’s motion failed without support, Commissioner Liz Alpert quickly motioned to keep the conversation going between all parties in search of a working solution.

“I think (The Players) is a really good use of the Municipal Auditorium, but I also am concerned about the agreement we have with the Bay Park Conservancy that anticipated that they would manage the facility,” Alpert said.

“If there’s a way for all of them to get together and come up with a solution that allows us and The Players to go forward as well as the film festival and keep it more flexible, let’s see if we can’t have them all meet together with staff and figure out a way to make it workable for everybody.”

Commissioner Jen Ahearn-Koch added that the agreement with the Bay Park Conservancy trumps all other matters after she seconded Alpert’s motion.

“This is a partnership agreement.

The words are here. When we talk about these agreements that we make, we have to be very, very careful. The devil’s in the detail, and the detail is right there,” Ahearn-Koch said. “It does say the city and the BPC will propose separately a plan for the transitioning and programming of the Municipal Auditorium.

This speaks to our integrity when we make these agreements. Either we stick to them or we don’t.”

In colorful metaphoric fashion, Vice Mayor Kyle Battie said the city shouldn’t engage in flirtation with another suitor while already wearing a promise ring.

“Make no mistake: The Players is almost out of here,” Battie said. “They were going to be out in Lakewood Ranch, and I keep that in the back of my brain. But when we start talking about commitment, it’s almost as though you couldn’t get that girlfriend, so you took her friend. You really didn’t want her, but you took her anyway.”

Regardless of which suitor the city decides to date, Mayor Erik Arroyo said before the vote that the city needs to make certain the relationship is mutually beneficial.

“I just hope that it’s fair and it takes into account that it is a very valuable piece of property for the city, and it also takes into account that we’ve had very bad leases in the past where we end up maintaining the infrastructure,” Arroyo said. “We don’t get enough money to cover basic expenses, so just keep that in mind.”

Even as planning is underway for “complete streets” projects for 10th Street and Boulevard of the Arts in downtown Sarasota, work is set to begin to similarly transform a 1-mile stretch of Ringling Boulevard between Lime and Pineapple avenues into a bike-friendly corridor.

Dubbed the Ringling Trail project, Ringling Boulevard will be reduced from two lanes to one in each direction to accommodate protected bicycle lanes that will connect Legacy Trail and Payne Park to the downtown core. The city has estimated that as many as 1,000 bicyclists a day use the bike lanes.

In addition to providing multimodal transportation options, Ringling Boulevard will receive an aesthetic makeover with landscaping providing both form and function, creating a more visitor-friendly experience that translates to economic growth for downtown businesses.

Work on the $2.4 million project was set to begin in early June with project completion scheduled by the end of the year.

“People are going to see some landscaping improvements where we’re creating some curved islands,” said Camden Mills, Sarasota’s capital projects engineer. “When the bicycle lane is approaching an intersection, there will be green striping to provide a a visual change in addition to

Because Ringling Boulevard is not a primary east-west thoroughfare, Mills said impact on traffic will be minimal and might even improve.

The number of cars on the road has declined since 2002, from as much as 14,000 trips a day to an average of about 7,900 daily trips in 2019.

“We think, based on the traffic we have there, this won’t add more congestion because the majority of the congestion that we have there today is due to people trying to turn left at these intersections with no dedicated turn lanes,” Mills said.

“Even though we’re getting rid of two straight lanes, we are providing some dedicated turn lanes to help alleviate the traffic.”

Signal timing also will be adjusted to improve traffic management.

When planning began for the project in late 2020, Sarasota Assistant City Engineer Daniel Ohrenstein said the project, a product of the Sarasota In Motion initiative, would bring economic benefits to the area as well.

The Leonard Reid House is named for the early pioneer who helped establish Sarasota’s first Black community, Overtown, now the Rosemary District.

The single-story, frame, vernacular-style house built in 1926 carries a local historic designation and is listed on the National Register of Historic Places.

Leonard Reid was considered the “right-hand man” to Sarasota’s first mayor, J. Hamilton Gillespie, who served from 1902 to 1907. Reid lived much of his life in the house with his wife and their two daughters, Ethel Reid Hayes and Viola Reid, who also

contributed greatly to the community.

Both women were educated in Sarasota and went on to obtain higher education, according to Cliff Smith, a senior planner with the city’s historic preservation program.

They spent most of their adult lives teaching in Sarasota schools and investing in children.

“The Reid family residence is a special place where books were handed out to Overtown’s children and the family’s parrot perched in its cage on the screened porch talked to passersby,” said Vickie Oldham, president and CEO of the Sarasota African American Cultural Coalition.

A confluence of circumstances led to the relocation of the house.

Its owner, Vinland Holdings Inc. of Cocoa Beach, initiated a dialogue in 2020 to donate the historic structure to the city. In August 2020, the City Commission purchased a vacant lot at Orange Avenue and Dr. Martin Luther King. Jr. Way at about the same time the Sarasota African American Cultural Coalition was looking for space in the city limits to establish a new cultural arts and history center.

“Several key parts had to come together at just the right time for this to work, and somehow they did,” said Mayor Erik Arroyo. “This truly is an amazing partnership between the public, private and nonprofit sectors. Because of the partnership, a beautiful historic structure is being preserved, and we’re about to see the much-anticipated launch of a Sarasota African American cultural center.”

In January 2021, the city entered into a cost-sharing agreement to move the Leonard Reid House to the recently acquired parcel in Newtown.

Vinland Holdings is responsible for costs associated with the move, like the city’s preparation of the new site to receive the house, including clearing the property, building a foundation, curbing, parking, utilities, landscaping and permitting fees.

The city takes ownership of the house upon delivery to the new site.

In January 2022, the City Commission unanimously approved a lease agreement with the the Sarasota African American Cultural Coalition to use the Leonard Reid House as a cultural arts center to host lectures, programs and exhibits.

“The health system appreciates what Mason has accomplished at the Healthcare Foundation,” Sarasota Memorial Health Care System President and CEO David Verinder said in the release. “Personally, I value the friendship and partnership we created over the past five years, and I wish him and his family the best.”

Most recently, Ayres spearheaded the team that acquired a $10 million gift to support the creation of the Cornell Family Behavioral Health Pavilion on the SMH-Sarasota Campus. Ayres’ other accomplishments, the release states, include rebranding the organization to better align with the health system’s goals and vision and creating the annual Hospital Gala, which has raised more than $5.4 million in support of the hospital’s greatest needs.

“My time with the health care foundation has been tremendously rewarding, and working alongside the Sarasota Memorial team has been an honor,” Ayres said. “I am also proud of the amazing relationships we cultivated with our donor community and grateful for their unwavering support of our mission.

This decision wasn’t an easy one.

However, I am excited to see what my next chapter in life brings.”

Mason Ayres, president of the Sarasota Memorial Healthcare Foundation for nearly six years, during which he shepherded two of the largest gifts in the foundation’s 47-year history, has announced his retirement.

Ayers, the release states, helped transform the foundation “into one of Sarasota’s most successful nonprofits, raising over $100 million,” including the big gifts. Ayers spent eight years in fundraising for the NCH Healthcare System in Naples and that organization’s foundation prior to joining the SMH Foundation in November 2016.

“Mason’s decision to retire at this time is bittersweet,” Healthcare Foundation Board Chair Deb Kabinoff said in the release. “During his tenure, the organization has grown exponentially and has proven its ability to help SMH maintain its level of health care excellence for our community. We respect Mason’s decision and are incredibly fortunate that the organization he is leaving behind is on a trajectory to even greater success in the future. His achievements will not be forgotten.”

Ayres was instrumental in leading the foundation’s largest fundraising campaign in history to support the creation of Sarasota Memorial’s new Cancer Institute. The Leading with Care cancer campaign launched in 2018 with a fundraising goal of $50 million. With a transformational gift of $25 million from the Brian and Sheila Jellison Family Foundation, the original goal was exceeded and fundraising reached $75 million.

Siesta Key gains new intersection with four-way stop County commissioners OK extra stop signs on Siesta Village’s main street.

t might not have scored highly enough on a matrix of trafficcontrol best practices to warrant such a thing, but an intersection in the heart of Siesta Village is now governed by four-way stop signs.

The Sarasota County Commission this month OK’d the installation of the four-way stop at Ocean Boulevard and Avenida Milano, which becomes the residential Whispering Sands Drive on the west side of the street.

A Circle K store with gas pumps adds to the comings and goings on the other side of Ocean Boulevard. In addition to cars and trucks, bicycles, pedestrians, rented golf carts and tiny three-wheel motor carts are prevalent there.

Residents of Whispering Sands earlier this year petitioned the county to consider adding a pair of stop signs to help them enter and leave their neighborhood, delivering documents containing 107 signatures.

The county’s Traffic Advisory Council in March voted to reject the request, along with another request for a four-way stop at Prudence Drive and Schwalbe Drive in the Strathmore Villas community.

County transportation officials backed the council, also recommending against the traffic features.

Commissioners on May 10 gave the green light to the Siesta Key project and rejected the mainland proposal.

“No disrespect to staff, no disrespect to TAC, but ultimately that’s the reason it comes to us,” said Com-

missioner Mike Moran. “It’s not rubber-stamp stuff. It comes to us for discussion.”

Don DeBerry, the county’s Public Works Department transportation manager, said that although the Siesta intersection didn’t warrant a four-way stop, the staff did recommend a roundabout there. “Unfortunately, they are not cheap,” he said, adding that there was no funding for the larger project.

During the Traffic Advisory Council’s March meeting, discussion centered on the possibility the four-way stop would tie up traffic in one of the approaches to Siesta Village. The TAC rejected the idea 4-0.

DeBerry said traffic engineers use a matrix of five conditions to help determine suitability, with a project requiring seven or more points in metrics such as crash rate, traffic volume, traffic speed, special circumstances including limited sight lines and the average daily split of traffic on one of the streets versus the other. The Siesta intersection received six points (four of which came from traffic volume) but lost one for Ocean Boulevard’s status as a so-called minor collector road.

“I rarely disagree with staff on these things, but on this particular one there’s already two stop signs.

I don’t see why it hurts to have it a four-way stop,” Commissioner Nancy Detert said, adding that the additional stop signs would have a positive effect on slowing traffic, something commission Chair Al Maio said he’s heard from citizens would be a good move.

County Administrator Jonathan Lewis was also asked by commissioners to look into the possibility that with the four-way stop the Sarasota County Area Transit-run Breeze Trolley could be redirected a

few blocks farther into Siesta Village to begin its southbound leg.

The free service now leaves Beach Road on its northbound leg at Calle de la Siesta, continues on at Canal Road, then makes a left to Ocean Boulevard to head south again. The new four-way stop, which is already in effect, would help facilitate the extension of the northbound leg behind Morton’s Siesta Market and The Star Thai & Sushi location and make for a safer left turn.

In the end, commissioners voted 5-0 to give the four-way stop a try, acknowledging it’s not major work.

“It’s a stop sign on a pole; as fast as we can put in it, we can pull it out,” Moran said. “My instinct is to try it.

Put the stop signs there, have staff come back to us in whatever, three months, six months, and see how it’s going.”

Commissioner Christian Ziegler said the stop-sign approval, even against staff’s recommendation, sends a strong message.

“I appreciated the board discussion but also the citizen engagement,” he said. “I just think that’s how it should work. Sometimes that

There’s a lot of focus on what makes people angry, but I think some of these actions are good, and that’s the citizens rising up, making a request, and here we are getting it done for them.”

SETTLING UP 7:50 p.m., 1500 block of N. Lockwood Ridge Road Property damage: An incident with a laundry cart caused damage to a vehicle, though police determined the dispute between the two parties involved was civil, not criminal. The caller to police said a person using a laundry cart outside a business let the item crash into her car’s door. The caller refused payment of $100, saying the damage was more extensive than that. The officer suggested both parties exchange information, obtain a damage estimate for the car and work out the payment details. The officer held out the possibility of civil court if a satisfactory arrangement couldn’t be made.

DRIVING A HARD BARGAIN 6:13 p.m., 2200 block of Bee Ridge Road Financial crime: A business operator reported to police the theft of business checks from the premises and offered an investigating officer a theory on how the checks might have gone missing. The operator said a couple had visited the business and might have spotted a checkbook in a partially opened drawer. Over the course of their business interaction, all three of them went outside, but one of the couple asked to go inside to use a restroom. Checks were determined to be missing days later; one of them had been cashed before the bank could be notified. The business operator provided police with as much data on the couple as possible.

DOO-DOO THE RIGHT THING 8:50 a.m., 1500 block of 23rd Street Dispute: A resident came to police headquarters to file a report about a neighbor who continually allows her dog to urinate and defecate on her property, despite several requests and confrontations aimed at reversing the behavior. The resident said she did not have information on the neighbor. The resident said she would report further incidents to police.

LATTE FINGERS? 11:38 a.m., 1300 block of S. Tamiami Trail Suspicion: A resident came to police headquarters to report a lost wallet and relay her suspicions that it might have been stolen. She said she had been to a coffee shop, placed the wallet on a table, then noticed it was gone. Employees said no one had turned in a lost wallet, and they hadn’t seen what had happened to the article, which contained a collection of cards and a driver’s license. The woman said she thought the wallet could have been stolen but had no witnesses or evidence to that end. She was unsure whether the store had interior security video coverage.

MISSING ITEMS 9:41 p.m., 2000 block of Main Street Theft: A man who told police he was homeless reported the theft of a family photo, a driver’s license and a filled-out form containing personal information from his backpack, which was left unattended overnight on the street. The man told police he intended to press charges in the event of an arrest. The man was directed to a resource for homeless people to facilitate the replacement of his license.

Art installations serve as a border between Patriot Plaza and the cemetery and describe acts of service over the life of the American military.

One guide, Ed Gates, says he loves the moment when he’s able to connect with youngsters about the importance of service.

Gates, on a recent visit to Patriot Plaza, recounted his encounter with a pair of middle school kids.

He taught them some basic drill commands and the specific greetings for Marines and Army soldiers, but he wasn’t certain whether they had really grasped them.

“At the end of the presentation, they’re leaving to go to their bus and they thank you for doing the tour and everything,” says Gates. “These two girls as they walk away, they were saying, ‘No, you do it!’ I thought, ‘What are they up to?’

“Then they turned around in unison and said, ‘Mr. Gates,’ and they gave me a big ‘Ooooh-rah!’”

t’s a shaded place of solemn reflection, bordered by palm trees and headstones and covered by steel and glass.

Sitting on a stone bench and shielded from the elements, you can block out the whole world for a few moments of respite.

Patriot Plaza, the 2,800-seat amphitheater at Sarasota National Cemetery, was built to be an oasis in a sea of grief. It was intended to honor veterans and celebrate their lives, and it was funded by philanthropy with art as a main ingredient.

The Patterson Foundation, a charitable organization endowed in 1997, funded Patriot Plaza with a $12 million budget plus $2 million for art. The plaza was later gifted and dedicated to the National Cemetery Administration. Linda Gould, a retired U.S. Army colonel and community consultant for the Patterson Foundation, says Patriot Plaza is the first of its kind.

“What makes this unique is this was the first time ever in the United States that the federal government allowed a charitable foundation to use their money to pay for an enhancement on a national cemetery,” says

Gould. “There are enhancements on other cemeteries, but this was the first, and now it’s being replicated in Alabama and Georgia.”

Today, the American flag is visible from everywhere in the plaza, usually at half-staff.

Since Sarasota National Cemetery’s opening in 2009, 25,000 veterans have been laid to rest, and every

weekday an average of 15 funerals takes place here. The cemetery has 16 employees who assist with administration and maintenance of the 295-acre facility, and around 30 volunteers help in interacting with the public.

The plaza also has a crew of tour guides who lead school groups around the facility and teach them

Patriot Plaza, built by Hoyt Architects, opened to the public in 2014, a few years after the cemetery.

The east entrance to the plaza welcomes visitors with a pair of sculptures by Ann Hirsch, an instructor at the Rhode Island School of Design.

The installation, titled “Home,” takes up the space on two curved walls that funnel you into the plaza; the sculptures are made of cast bronze and meant to evoke a bird’s nest.

younger eagle that might be about to leave the nest.

On the south wall, there’s another nest of branches without birds. The south wall is emblazoned with a quote from Abraham Lincoln’s second inaugural address.

Both walls have branches from the artist’s native New England worked into the sculpture, and Gates explains how she created it.

“This is an art process that’s over 300 years old; it’s known as the lost wax process,” says Gates. “Picture a very large solid tube of hard wax. The artist basically chisels out the art piece from the wax. All the images and the delineations you see are in that wax.

“There’s a team of people that

works with the artist when the artist has completed their work that essentially comes in with a molten metal they spray over the wax. Before the wax can start melting and destroying the art piece, the molten metal is immediately cooled off with a misty spray of cold water. That’s a very old process and it’s still used today.”

The same process was used to create the imposing sculptures at the west entrance to the plaza.

Pablo Eduardo, a graduate of Tufts University, sculpted two gigantic eagles to watch over Patriot Plaza.

The majestic birds of prey, 7 feet tall and 12 feet wide, are called the “Guardian Eagles.”

The sculptures are oriented sideways, which means that one watchful eye is pointed toward the plaza and the other is gazing out toward the gravesites.

are emblazoned on the wall. Gould says the display will never change, regardless of what happens in the future.

“One of the questions we get from visitors quite a bit is that there’s now a sixth Armed Force with Space Command; will there be another seal added? The answer is no,” she says.

NIGHT TO DAY, HERE AND AWAY

When you’re seated in the amphitheater, your eyes are immediately drawn to the stone rostrum and 80-foot flagpole. But if you peer down toward the bottom of the stage, running left to right, you’ll see a beautifully colored mosaic.

The 50-foot-long piece titled “Night to Day, Here and Away” is meant to remind visitors that they share the same sky with their loved ones who might be serving halfway across the world.

The artist, Ellen Driscoll, is a professor at Bard University in New York and weaved in both the everchanging horizon and symbolic emblems representing unit citations and medals.

You can find ribbons including the Medal of Honor, the Purple Heart, the Silver Star and Bronze Star and others in the mosaic, and the mosaic also features laurel leaves and stars: blue for service members and gold delineating those who died in service.

The mosaic is especially meaningful to Gates and his wife, Nancy, who are Gold Star parents.

Their son, the late Russell J. Gates, was a Navy aviator who flew combat missions in the Persian Gulf War and died in October 2000.

Gates, after explaining some of the elements, eloquently describes the artist’s intent.

“If you notice starting over in the left here, look at the sky. It’s dark,” he says. “As you move to the center, it turns a lighter color. It’s daylight.

When you move to the right end of the piece of art, it’s dark again.

“We’re here; we’re a military family. We might have a son, a daughter, a sister or brother or uncle or aunt who is serving their country overseas. We get up in the morning; we have freedom. Possibly these people are defending freedom. They may have had a bad day. They may have had to fight in combat. ‘Night to Day. Here and Away.’”

Driscoll’s art piece also serves to balance the entire plaza. Her mosaic, which began life as a 15-foot watercolor painting, was also turned into a pair of 20-foot-tall spires. The spires repeat the theme but stretch the story upward.

“Remember,” says Gates, “that artist started with a 15-foot watercolor. Every one of these little glass pieces was manually inlaid. Needless to say, it took some time.”

There’s also another feature near the rostrum that draws a lot of attention: a five-pointed star called a Berghaus Star Projection that signifies the worldwide reach of the U.S. military. There’s a star on the map to pinpoint Sarasota and one for Washington, D.C., where the commander in chief resides.

The slabs are all unfinished; in some cases they have a jagged edge to them or perhaps look like they’ve been through a battle. That’s all by design, says Gates.

“We live in an unfinished world.

We still have work to do to be perfect,” says Gates. “Every one of the tablets has one section that looks like it’s been ripped. It’s not perfect.

“We’re imperfect. That’s the empathy the artist is conveying.”

The north pedestrian path to the plaza features a monument highlighting the many ways ordinary people have experienced service over the course of American history.

The exhibit consists of a series of 22 marble plinths, each containing a photograph and brief description of service.

The 49 photos arrayed throughout the installation address military themes such as conflict, technology, burial rituals and celebrations.

Interestingly, if you stand between plinths, you can see service experiences from different eras.

One plinth, for example, is of a soldier wearing an ancient prosthetic device, and the one facing it shows a modern version.

That exhibit was designed by artist Larry Kirkland, as was the “Testimonies” exhibit that lines the pedestrian path. Each of the 16 8-foot-6-

1. Mooney’s Byrd named Gatorade Florida Volleyball Player of the Year Cardinal Mooney junior volleyball player Jordyn Byrd was named the 20212022 Gatorade Florida Volleyball Player of the Year on Jan. 11.

Byrd, a 6-foot-5 outside hitter, recorded 551 kills, 258 digs, 56 blocks and 25 service aces during the indoor volleyball season, leading the Cougars (20-8) to the Florida High School Athletic Association Class 3A regional quarterfinals. Byrd also recorded a .463 hitting percentage. She is committed to Texas.

The Gatorade awards have been handed out to one player per sport in every state since 1985. The award recognizes not only athletic excellence but also academic achievement and character on and off the court. Byrd held a 3.72 GPA at the time the award was given.

he 2021-2022 high school sports season has come to a close in Sarasota,

remain forever.

Once again, Sarasota programs captured state

titles and put on a show. A player even received one of the most prestigious awards in sports.

In other words, it was a typical year for the area that again proved itself among the most-talented in the state.

Here are the top 10 moments of the Sarasota high school sports season.

2. Riverview girls, Sarasota boys swim teams win Class 4A state titles

The Riverview High girls team captured the Florida High School Athletic Association Class 4A team title on Nov. 12 in Stuart, beating Winter Park High 275-256.5. It is the program’s first team title since 2013.

Sophomore Addison Sauickie won the 200 freestyle (1:47.78) and sophomore Gracie Weyant, sister of Emma Weyant, won the 200 individual medley (2:01.15) and 100 breaststroke (1:01.61). The Rams also finished second in the 200 medley relay (1:44.60), 200 freestyle

relay (1:35.89) and 400 freestyle relay (3:24.81).

Gracie Weyant said watching her teammates accomplish those things and sending the seniors out with a victory felt incredible.

Not to be outdone, the Sailors were attempting to repeat after winning the title in Class 3A in 2020.

They were bumped to Class 4A this year, competing against the biggest and best schools in the state. That brought some doubt: The Sailors didn’t have a single individual race winner in 2020, instead relying on the team’s depth to carry the victory.

But the team believed, and that gave them a chance. In the end, the Sailors did exactly what they did in

2020: They had no individual champions but won the whole thing.

Among other results, junior Evan Keogh finished third in the 200-yard individual medley (1:50.22) and sixth in the 100-yard backstroke (50.14); senior Cole Firlie finished sixth in the 200-yard freestyle (1:40.25) and the 500-yard freestyle (4:31.47); junior Liam Heary finished fifth in the 100yard breaststroke (57.39) and sixth in the 50-yard freestyle (21.09); and sophomore Casey Aten finished eighth in the 200 IM (1:52.64).

The Sailors are the first team to win back-to-back state titles at different classification levels since the FHSAA went to four classifications.

3. Area swimmers find individual success at state meet Their teams might not have won state titles, but three swimmers from our area managed to earn medals on their own.

Cardinal Mooney junior girls swimmer Michaela Mattes won gold in the 500-yard freestyle (4:45.51) and silver in the 200-yard individual medley (2:00.71) at the FHSAA Class 1A state championship.

Riverview High senior boys swimmer Liam Custer took home two individual golds at the Class 4A meet, in the 200 individual medley (1:46.82) and 500 freestyle (4:21.11).

Sarasota High senior Sumner Chmielewski won silver in the 200 IM (2:03.90) and bronze in the 500 freestyle (4:51.91) at the Class 4A meet.

The Cardinal Mooney beach volleyball team defeated Merritt Island High 4-1 in Tavares on April 30 to capture the Sunshine State Athletic Conference state championship.

Though the 4-1 score appears to indicate separation between Mooney and Merritt Island, Mooney Coach Chad Davis said the match was much closer.

Two of the individual matches Mooney eventually won went to three sets, and Mooney occasionally trailed in them, but the team’s depth allowed the Cougars to pull it out.

“When the last two games went to a third set, and we were on the verge of winning, we felt it,” Carson said. “We were about to serve for the win when they (freshman Izzy Russell and junior Gracie Page) won their game. Everyone trampled on each other, and we were all screaming.”

5. Cougars girls basketball reaches second-straight state championship game

The Cardinal Mooney girls basketball team defeated King’s Academy 50-42 in the FHSAA Class 3A state semifinals on Feb. 23 at the RP Funding Center in Lakeland to reach the state title game two years in a two. Cardinal Mooney never trailed against King’s Academy. The Cougars were led in scoring by freshman Kali Barrett with 19 points. Junior Olivia Davis added 16 points.

The Cougars did it by playing their signature aggressive style. Mooney’s will to win often gave the Cougars the edge in big games. Once they had the lead, it was difficult to take it away from them.

Mooney’s shooting went cold in the final against Westminster Academy, costing the Cougars a state title, but appearing in two-straight title games is a feat in itself.

Sarasota High junior Alec Miller did not win the Class 4A boys 1,600-meter run at this year’s event, held May 11-14 at James G. Pressly Stadium in Gainesville, but he came close, and that was good enough to get Miller to smile wide on the podium.

Miller, who entered the event seeded first with a time of 4:19.86, ran in second place for the latter portion of the race and finished there as well (4:13.50). Miller tried to catch Hagerty High junior Brayden Seymour for first place, sprinting home on the final lap, but Seymour had built too big a lead over the course of the race and won by 1.74 seconds.

Still, Miller was happy.

“I was curious if I was going to be able to catch him (Seymour),” Miller said. “It didn’t happen, but I’m psyched I was able to drop six seconds (from his personal record) against a huge field like this. That was awesome.”

IMG Academy junior Amelia Malkin, a girls soccer player, committed to the Gators in December. It was the culmination of a lot of hard work. Malkin, who started playing soccer at age 5, had been emailing colleges to gauge their interest since her freshman year, when she played for both Riverview and travel team Braden River Soccer Club. She sent coaches video highlights and her team schedules and ask them to come watch her play. Nothing much came of the initiative.

Instead of accepting her circumstances, Malkin talked with her family and decided to transfer to IMG Academy. Not only did IMG have the connections and clout to reach elite programs, Malkin said, but the Ascenders players all take the sport as seriously as she does. Malkin said Florida Assistant Coach Kyle Venter came to an Ascenders practice in the fall to watch two others players. Malkin impressed with her play; she and Venter stayed in contact. A few months later, she was a Gator.

Malkin said the chance to play in a high-level conference like the Southern Conference, plus the school’s strong academics and relatively close distance to home, made Florida an easy choice.

7. Booker girls basketball reaches Final Four The Booker High girls basketball team won 74-50 over Port Charlotte High in the FHSAA Class 4A regional finals on Feb. 19, securing a spot in the Class 4A Final Four. Junior Chariot Johnson led the Tornadoes with 20 points, and junior Kymani Freeman had 15 points.

It was a win that made Coach Ty Bryant especially proud.

The Tornadoes were not carried on the back of a superstar. They played as a team, with different Tornadoes making winning plays each game. It was the little things that allowed Booker to thrive, such as senior Jaydn Lattimore’s ability to set screens, opening lanes for Johnson to get to the rim. The end result was a team stronger together than apart. Though the team’s journey ended in the state semifinals, its postseason run was more than enough to engender hope in its future.

The Riverview High boys soccer team’s defense and goaltending was impenetrable in 2021-2022.

Almost literally.

The Rams began their season with 12 shutout games. Manatee High did score one goal during the teams’ season-opening tie on Nov. 8, but it came on a penalty kick, not during the flow of the game. That was all the Rams allowed opponents to get until Sarasota High snuck one into the net on Jan. 12, more than two months later. Longtime Rams Coach Ed Stroop called the team’s defense the best he has ever coached.

Riverview lost 1-0 to Lakewood Ranch High in the postseason, but the feat its defense pulled off is remarkable nonetheless.

10. Riverview football uses ground game to get playoff win The Riverview High football team used three touchdowns from senior running back Jay’den Birch to beat Steinbrenner High 31-7 on Nov. 12 in the first round of the FHSAA Class 8A playoffs’.

Birch ran for 88 yards to go with his three touchdowns. Rams junior quarterback Will Carter Jr. also found sophomore Charles Lester III for a 56-yard touchdown pass. Rams senior safety Charlie Cooper intercepted a Steinbrenner pass in the fourth quarter, fulfilling Coach Josh Smithers’ wish for more turnovers on defense.

The win meant that Riverview has now won a playoff game in six consecutive seasons.

When did you start playing baseball?

I started playing when I was 5 years old. I think I just saw it and wanted to try it. I liked it right away.

What is the appeal to you now?

I don’t know why I like it, really. It is just fun to play.

What is your best skill?

I like hitting a lot. I think that is my best skill. I hit for a high average.

What have you been working to improve?

I have been working hard on my pitching. I’m all right at it, but I am getting better. I throw a (four-seam) fastball, a curveball, a slider, a changeup and a two-seam fastball.

My four-seam fastball is my favorite to throw.

What is your favorite memory?

I hit my first home run this spring in a travel ball tournament at Braden River Little League. I got into a full count, and the pitcher threw me one right down the middle, and I hit it out of the park. The next at-bat, I hit a home run again, and the next at-bat I doubled, and the next at-bat I hit another home run.

I school, but if I get drafted out of high school, I might just stick with that.

What is your favorite food?

It is probably spaghetti and meatballs.

What is your favorite TV show?

I don’t really have one. When I have free time, I’m usually playing whiffle ball with my friends or something outside.

A Farewell to Fausto The beloved St. Martha Catholic Church figure recently retired at age 86.

F

ather Fausto Stampiglia is larger than life — just about anyone and everyone will tell you.

To many, he’s the defining face of St.

Martha Catholic Church and has been for more than 30 years. Countless families have had their children baptized by Stampiglia inside St. Martha’s, many of whom have grown up and gone on to have their own sons and daughters baptized in the very same place.

To clergy members, he’s even more, having been dean of the Northern Deanery, theologian to the bishop, director of the Permanent Diaconate, an ex-officio member of the Presbyteral Council and head of other institutions.

Generations of students at St. Martha’s Catholic School grew up with Stampiglia visiting their classrooms and fondly remember their time spent learning from him.

In his tenure in Sarasota, he’s been many things to many people, but always a good man doing good deeds.

But to Stampiglia, his works and actions have been the simple result of living a life of meaning.

“Being a priest is living a life of joy,” Stampiglia said. “This November it will be 62 years as a priest, 31 years in Sarasota, and it’s been a joy.”

But this long chapter has come to an end. Stampiglia recently retired at the age of 86 after 31 years of service with St. Martha Parish.

“Father Fausto deserves great recognition and praise for the pastoral work he has accomplished in his years of service with the Diocese of Venice,” the Rev. Frank J. Dewane, bishop of the Diocese of Venice, said in a statement. “While he is retiring and his cheerful presence will be missed, the legacy Father Fausto leaves behind will be remembered for generations.

“Father was a legend in his own time. I know that he will continue the good work of our lord in his life going forward in all that he does.”

Stampiglia’s journey to the clergy started in an unexpected way, growing up in Rome during World War II. He remembers living under the threat of bombings and conflict when he was a young child.

school, where he met a visiting missionary bishop from China during confession.

“I meet this little shrimp of a man in this huge Italian chair,” Stampiglia said. “As soon as I enter, he puts a finger in my face and says, ‘God wants you to be a priest.’”

Stampiglia was interested — he was religious and passionate already — but it was a big ask.

Taking vows of poverty and obedience wasn’t unheard of; they’d lost much during the war, and Stampiglia was used to listening to nuns with their corporal punishment at school.

But he acknowledges that a vow of chastity was a tougher thing to do.

The missionary bishop suggested he try two years without committing a sin against chastity. If he could make it, he’d have what it takes to be a priest.

“Even looking at a naked statue (was a sin against chastity),” Stampiglia said. “Do you know how many naked statues there were at the time?”

Even so, his commitment won out, and Stampiglia became a priest nine years later, at age 25.

Even that moment was larger than life. Stampiglia remembers telling fellow priests about the missionary bishop that put him on his path to embracing god and the murmurs and laughs from the crowd that followed.

patient who escaped during a bombing in the war, stole a bishop’s robe from a cathedral and traveled to different convents conducting Masses.

“I told myself, ‘This was all definitely God’s will,’” Stampiglia said with a laugh.

Nonetheless, his career underway, Stampiglia moved from Italy to New York in 1964 and served in Harlem as a pastor. He then helped start a diocese in Pensacola in the 1970s.

That led to him helping establish operations in Venice and eventually moving to Sarasota to work at Incarnation Catholic Church and then St. Martha in the early 1990s.

He wasted no time in making changes at St. Martha’s by adding programs to the church, establish-

ing the Vietnamese and Tridentine Rite Masses, the Institute for Catholic Studies and Faith Formation and even helping create Casa Santa Marta senior housing.

Don Henry, a retired pastor at St. Thomas More Catholic Church for decades, has known Stampiglia for nearly 30 years as a remarkably warm presence, the type of guy who would go in for a hug rather than a handshake as a welcome. They met at a convocation in Boca Grande — Henry had just moved to Florida and said he knew almost no other pastors — and was quickly welcomed by Stampiglia and the diocese. It made him feel at home.

“He’s a person who could take your monumental mountain (of a prob-

lem), and after listening to him, you walked away, and it was only a molehill,” Henry said.

One of Stampiglia’s favorite parts of his vocation is connecting with people and capturing them with a well-told sermon.

“Becoming a priest is what the will of God is, as that fake bishop told me,” Stampiglia said.

One of Stampiglia’s greatest and enduring accomplishments has been the support and near-resurrection of St. Martha Catholic School, which teaches kids from pre-K through eighth grade.

The school was losing students, enough to the point that then-Bishop of the Diocese of Venice John Nevins suggested Stampiglia sell the school to help pay off debt.

“I’m a product of Catholic school; I’m not an undertaker,” Stampiglia said. “I said, ‘God, no,’ … and by 1995 we were looking to enlarge the school.”

Bishop Nevins granted Stampiglia permission to construct a new school on 20 acres on Fruitville Road, which sported a domed structure design popular in Italy.

He’s the life blood of the school,” St. Martha Catholic School Principal Siobhan Young said. “He’s dedicated every hour of his life to make sure it’s doing well and has a long-term vision. Now that (his retirement) is a reality, it’s a little unbelievable to think what it’ll be like without him.”

Young joined St. Martha Catholic School in the 2010s and quickly realized how much she’d be working with the good father. He’s been a helpful presence, always calm, a good listener, when giving Young advice.

Stampiglia typically makes his way

to the school at least twice a week, but Fridays are always his big day: He visits every classroom and answers questions to make the students more comfortable with the clergy.

“I want them to see a priest and learn how to deal with a priest,” Stampiglia said. “ They get fascinated by the personality and the accent. In the future when they have questions, they know they can turn to a priest.”

Those questions range from his life in Italy to ice cream, and that’s just the start of his involvement.

“He’s at every awards ceremony, presentation, play, fundraiser, all of it,” Young said. “He remembers everything and everyone.”

He keeps track of all those goings on, too. Stampiglia is a devoted documenter and takes photos and video of everything he attends. Every year when children graduate from the school in eighth grade, he presents them with a video from their time in preschool to eighth grade.

With his retirement being official on May 14, Stampiglia is entering a new chapter of his life. He’ll still be with St. Martha in preparing upcoming feasts and some events but largely will be learning a new schedule where he isn’t present at every Mass or school event.

The last three decades have had familiarity and continuity, but now he’s preparing for something unknown.

“It’s the final chapter. It’s getting ready to meet my maker,” Stampiglia said. “It’s time (to retire).”

arasota High seniors became high school graduates about an hour earlier than planned Friday night as school officials reset commencement ceremonies to outsmart a batch of looming wet weather.

Even starting at 7 p.m. instead of 8, Principal David Jones told the 524 seniors that the night’s plan had changed, flipping the planned program to ensure diplomas would be awarded first in case rain snuck in despite their best efforts.

They didn’t need to worry. On a glorious night at Cleland Stadium marked by a beautiful sunset, the graduates filed in and walked

BOOKER HIGH B ooker High School celebrated its 88th commencement at Robarts Arena on Saturday afternoon, as students in the Class of 2022 received their diplomas and celebrated their accomplishments with family and friends.

The event was live-streamed, and an enthusiastic crowd packed the arena to see their graduates cross the stage and enter a new phase of their lives. Graduate Abigail Holdway sang “The Star-Spangled Banner” and Booker High School featured commencement speakers Chloe Sebiro, Sofia Santiago Espinet and Giacomo Mutti.

Members of the school orchestra played the song “Somewhere” during the graduation ceremony, and a student band named Zephyr performed “In This Hour.”

Booker High School Principal Rachel Shelley delivered her remarks toward the end of the ceremony and exhorted her students to be active participants in constructing the world in which they’d like to live.

iverview High seniors moved their cap tassels from one side to the other on Saturday morning at Robarts Arena, signifying their new roles as young adults free from high school.

About 600 of the students walked the stage and accepted diplomas in front of beaming friends, family, school faculty and staff.

Together, they heard well wishes from their senior class leaders, which included a salute by class president Alexander Kempton to his classmates heading to the armed forces and tales of perseverance for their experiences with remote learning during the COVID-19 pandemic.

Senior Grace Fehr delivered her address “The Climbers” as the winner of the annual Senior Speaker Award.

She spoke of coming to Riverview High as a shy new student from New York and working hard to adjust.

“Quitting can become a habit just as easily as winning can,” she said. “In hard times, don’t stop trying. Hold on, hold fast, hold out, and don’t quit. Keep. On. Climbing.”

Riding out T

he Village Idiots cycling group paid respects to those injured or killed in crashes during a solemn ride through Sarasota on May 18.

The 20th annual Ride of Silence drew dozens of cyclists to the Robarts Arena area to kick off a 7.2mile bike ride through Main Street and back. The Village Idiots put on the event every year to raise awareness of traffic safety and the cyclists’ rights to roadways.

President Dawn Zielinski welcomed and thanked the assembled riders before having a trio of musicians play bagpipes and drums to start the ride.

Village Idiots Vice President Lisa Michel manned the lead vehicle and led the group of bike riders through many of Sarasota’s busy roads, occasionally stopping to allow separated bikers to catch up. The group made its way through Main Street and back to Robarts before finishing the evening with food and drinks.
