Siesta Key has gotten attention for the quality of its beaches, but now, it will become the setting of a reality TV show.

On Sunday, Siesta Key was again thrust into the national spotlight — this time, during the MTV Movie & TV Awards.

In a commercial, the network announced a new reality TV show set on the barrier island. The show, called “Siesta Key,” is “about a group of kids in an elite Florida enclave who return home for the summer after spending their freshman year in college,” according to an April 16 profile of MTV President Chris McCarthy in Adweek.

MTV spokesman Jason Shumaker confirmed the show would debut in July.

City disciplines employees following public art controversy Three city employees returned from administrative leave this week with new titles and docked salaries after an investigation determined they failed to address a conflict of interest in commissioning a $100,000 public art project.

The investigation examined the city’s selection process as it sought to add murals to the interior of the State Street parking garage. A report says Parking General Manager Mark Lyons should have disclosed that an artist selected as a finalist for that project was his son-in-law.

Following the investigation, the city demoted Lyons, Senior Planner Clifford Smith and Neighborhood and Development Services General Manager David Smith for violating ethics and conflict-of-interest policies.

After hearing input from Lyons criticizing another finalist, the Public Art Committee recommended the City Commission select Mark Krucke’s proposal for the artwork.

An internal city report concluded that Lyons unduly influenced the selection process.

Lyons, who is now parking manager, will see a 10% cut in pay. Clifford Smith, now a planner, and David Smith, now chief planner, will have their salaries cut by 7% each.

The City Commission will discuss the State Street art project at a June 5 meeting.

Fresh faces The City Commission is getting two new members Friday. What change will Hagen Brody and Jen Ahearn-Koch bring to City Hall?

s he celebrated his firstplace finish in Tuesday’s municipal election — and his new title of city commissioner-elect — attorney Hagen Brody saw a diverse coalition of supporters rejoicing alongside him at Louies Modern.

Although Tuesday marked the end of a seven-month campaign, Brody said his election night party might also reflect the beginning of a new dynamic at City Hall.

“I look around and I see people from all walks of life — successful folks, folks that are struggling, young people, not so young people — and part of my campaign has always been about mutual respect,” Brody said. “I think it helps just getting people together in one room and seeing different points of view, to move forward on some of the lingering issues that we have had for so long.”

Brody and neighborhood leader Jen Ahearn-Koch emerged victorious in Tuesday’s election for two at-large seats on the City Commission. The two beat out small business owner Martin Hyde, the third candidate to advance to the runoff election.

Brody earned a vote from 74.6% of the 8,534 voters who participated in Tuesday’s election. Ahearn-Koch got 59.5% of the vote, and Hyde earned 36.5%.

Voter turnout was 22.8%, nearly a 4% increase from the first election in March.

Brody’s campaign prioritized a leaner government focused on public safety, utilities and infrastructure. Rather than hinging on any one issue, Brody thinks the results reflect voters’ confidence in his ability to work effectively as a commissioner.

“There is no priority No. 1,” Brody said. “We have so many issues in the city to deal with, but I think above all is that the institution of the City Commission is effective, efficient and respected — and people believe again that it can achieve great things for this city.”

Ahearn-Koch, the top votegetter in March, had a similar reaction when asked about her top priorities. She singled out transportation, development, affordable housing and homelessness as key issues the board would need to address, but said all of those issues cannot be addressed independently of one another.

“You’re not in a silo,” AhearnKoch said. “It’s you with other people, and I think all of these

things are connected. I can’t wait to get started.”

Hyde took full responsibility for his loss Tuesday. During the runoff period, Hyde focused his criticism on Ahearn-Koch, attacking her positions on development and her willingness to consider making Sarasota a sanctuary city.

“I did what I thought was the best thing at the time,” Hyde said. “I sense that I was obviously wrong, and in the end, I have to live with that. I invested my own time, my own money and the defeat — which is a resounding one — is on me.”

MAKING CHANGE

Hyde is forecasting little variation from the status quo at City Hall.

He said Brody and Ahearn-Koch will fill similar roles as outgoing commissioners Suzanne Atwell and Susan Chapman.

“I don’t think very much changes in Sarasota, and I don’t think the sky falls in, either,” Hyde said.

It’s easy to draw parallels between the outgoing and incom-

ing commissioners: Atwell was a vocal supporter of Brody’s campaign; Chapman and AhearnKoch both served as neighborhood association leaders and Planning Board members before ascending to the commission. Atwell and Chapman made appearances at Brody and Ahearn-Koch’s election night parties, respectively.

Atwell pointed to Brody’s age as one new dynamic the 35-year-old will bring to the commission.

“He is going to bring in passion, youth and a knowledge of this community,” Atwell said.

Brody, who had no city government experience before running, hoped other residents would be encouraged to get involved.

“Procedure can be learned,” Brody said. “Substance is what we should be looking for.”

During the campaign, AhearnKoch was tied to a potentially significant change in how the city reviews new developments. She served on the steering committee of the resident activist group STOP, which has called for an end to administrative approval,

a process that allows city staff to determine if proposed projects are compliant with zoning regulations.

Her victory Tuesday isn’t a guarantee that the commission will embrace STOP’s core issues.

Kate Lowman, another STOP steering committee member, said the group planned to make its case against administrative approval once the city begins reviewing a new form-based zoning code later this year.

Although the group can anticipate a sympathetic ear in AhearnKoch, STOP doesn’t have a good sense of where the other commissioners may stand. In the lead-up to the election, Brody expressed opposition to the idea that administrative approval was creating problems.

“Our expectation is that we need to double down to clearly make our case,” Lowman said.

Ahearn-Koch and Brody were both optimistic that their election would lead to more significant progress during their fouryear terms. Ahearn-Koch said she and Brody have gotten along fabulously, and anticipated the new commission would have substantive, civil discussions together.

“We will do that well at the table, and I think we will be very constructive,” Ahearn-Koch said.

Brody, too, was confident in his ability to work collaboratively once he officially joins the board.

“As long as we all remember that we have that core desire to see this city succeed, we can come to a lot of agreement,” he said.

With a one-sentence order Friday, the Second District Court of Appeals effectively brought a close to a nonprofit group’s legal argument that City Commissioner Susan Chapman violated the Sunshine Law in 2013.

The court denied Citizens for Sunshine’s motion to obtain a written opinion in the case — which the group needed to continue appealing a 2016 ruling that said Chapman did not run afoul of state regulations governing public meetings.

The case dates back to a 2013 meeting of downtown merchants regarding homelessness, which both Chapman and Commissioner Suzanne Atwell attended. For Chapman, the latest legal development was further validation of her long-standing response to the allegations.

“I knew all along I did not violate the Sunshine Law,” Chapman said.

Chapman, whose last day on the commission is Friday, acknowledged the criticism she’s received for fighting the case. To date, the city has incurred just less than $400,000 in legal expenses defending Chapman. Next month, the commission will discuss whether to attempt to recoup attorneys fees in circuit court

from Citizens for Sunshine, City Attorney Robert Fournier said.

Still, Chapman heard support from constituents who felt she was defending their right to have officials attend important community meetings.

“I know it’s important to people to be able to tell their elected representatives their opinions on issues,” Chapman said.

But Michael Barfield, a paralegal working with Citizens for Sunshine, refuses to say the courts have rejected the group’s interpretation of the Sunshine Law. Barfield claims the absence of a written opinion creates uncertainty about what, exactly, constitutes a Sunshine violation — and suggested the group would consider taking legal action again if a similar set of circumstances arose in the future.

“I can tell you the board is keenly interested in getting a binding judicial determination on this issue — whether it’s in Sarasota or Bradenton or Tallahassee, one way or another,” Barfield said.

Fournier, on the other hand, said the case has clearly determined Chapman’s actions did not constitute a Sunshine Law violation. Chapman, too, rejected any claims to the contrary.

“They were trying to change the law,” Chapman said. “The courts stuck by 40 years of legal precedent.”

St. Armands garage plans trouble neighbors As the city finalizes the design of the St. Armands Circle parking garage, residents near the project site say their interests aren’t being taken into consideration.

When the City Commission committed to building a 495-space parking garage on St. Armands Circle, officials said the unified support of area merchants, landlords and residents made them willing to approve the project.

Now, as the city works on the design of the four-story parking structure, people living near

the North Adams Drive site say they’ve been left out of the conversation.

“It seems like it’s speeding ahead without a lot of community input,” said Jim Jordan, a resident on Adams Drive. “We’re kind of concerned about it.”

In March and April, the city held workshops to discuss plans for the $15 million project. The city is contracting with KimleyHorn and Associates Inc. on the

design and Jon F. Swift Construction for the building.

Although a plan won’t be finalized until September, people like Madison Drive resident Dan Snyder say the design team has not listened to them.

Because the structure is being built next to a residential area, Snyder said the garage team should be particularly considerate about the project’s effect on its surroundings.

“We think they’ve gone almost the opposite way,” Snyder said.

“It’s like they’re poking a stick in our eye.”

Snyder said his primary concerns are noise and light. He singles out one element of the conceptual plans the designers have shared: staircases on the exterior of the garage. This will place people outdoors late at night, which will necessitate exterior lighting.

Snyder also fears that sound will travel from the stairways to the homes across the street.

Snyder has tried to arrange a meeting with the St. Armands Circle Association, but so far, he hasn’t been able to set up anything. Snyder and Jordan say the merchants and landowners are taking the lead.

Diana Corrigan, executive director of the St. Armands Circle Association, said residents have the wrong impression of how the project is proceeding. Right now, she said, those involved with the project are focusing on the core logistical details of building the garage — things like construction techniques and the timeline for various phases of the project.

The design is an important component of the project, but one that’s only in a conceptual phase right now, Corrigan said. She said the public workshops are sup-

posed to be a venue for residents to share their thoughts about the project, and that their feedback will be incorporated into the final plans, which need final approval from the City Commission.

“They think we’re spending a lot of time looking at design,” Corrigan said. “We’re just not there yet.”

Parking Manager Mark Lyons said the city has sought public input throughout the garage planning process, which dates back to 2014.

“We have always felt it’s important that whatever is designed and built complements the neighborhood, and doesn’t detract from it,” Lyons said.

Since the April workshop, residents have had a meeting with the design team. Snyder is optimistic their concerns will be taken seriously going forward. But he also said residents aren’t being treated as an equal voice. He said a resident should be included in the weekly project meetings, which Corrigan attends as a representative of the St. Armands Circle Association.

“We don’t see anything until we walk into the workshops, and we’re expected to react then and there,” Snyder said.

The city will hold a workshop June 9 to discuss the St. Armands garage project. Residents aren’t sure what their next steps will be leading up to that meeting. Right now, they hope officials have heard their concerns.

If that’s not the case, they’ll keep speaking out until they’re convinced someone is listening.

“Somehow, we need to insert ourselves deeper into the process and get a conversation going,” Jordan said. “That’s how things are best accomplished.”

Changes in store for Beneva shopping centers Benderson Development is one of three property owners pursuing changes for commercial plazas near the intersection of Beneva and Fruitville roads.

Four years after Sweetbay Supermarket closed at 180 N. Beneva Road, Benderson Development Co. plans to overhaul the grocery space soon — with a big name rumored as the eventual tenant.

On April 28, Benderson filed a two-phase redevelopment plan with the city for the Town and Country Plaza shopping center, located at the northwest corner of Beneva and Fruitville Road.

During the first phase, the developer plans to knock down the old Sweetbay building and build a 46,000-square-foot grocery store on the same site.

Benderson did not respond to multiple requests for comment regarding its plans for the property. Ownership of the 24.7-acre shopping center site is divided between two groups. Representatives for Gator Investments, the Miami Beach company that owns the portion of the property that Kmart recently vacated, are under the impression that a Publix will ultimately move into the

“From what we understand, Publix is going into the Sweetbay property,” said Dina Bartoletta, vice president of retail leasing for Gator Investments.

Publix officials could not confirm any plans for Town and County Plaza.

Regardless of the tenant, Benderson’s redevelopment plans are a sign of vitality for a shopping center that dates back to the 1970s.

Although Bealls department store remains a major tenant, the departure of Sweetbay and Kmart could be seen as a sign the property is languishing. When Urban Design Studio Director Karin Murphy began the work of writing a form-based zoning code for the city in 2013, she singled out the Beneva-Fruitville corridor as an area that could benefit from regulations focused on creating a more urban setting.

Just north of the Town and Country Plaza, changes could be coming to another shopping cen-

ter. The owners of Sarasota Commons, located at 935 N. Beneva Road, are advertising a potential expansion opportunity as large as 18,000 square feet on the north end of the property.

Right now, Publix occupies a 36,464-square-foot grocery space in Sarasota Commons.

Max Puyanic, general partner of the Sarasota Commons ownership group, said Publix’s lease allows the store to exercise fiveyear options if it wants to remain a tenant. Should the store leave in the near future, Puyanic said the owners have no concern about filling that space.

In the short-term, Puyanic said there are no plans for significant changes to the property. Taking a longer vision, though, he said the shopping center could be completely redeveloped, depending on the community’s needs.

“Its location across from the Bobby Jones Golf Complex and its proximity to The Meadows provides an ideal opportunity to serve neighborhood retail needs and also offers the potential for mixed-use development,” Puyanic said in an email.

He said the ownership group is following the form-based code development, which is factoring into its long-term planning.

Ultimately, the future of these shopping centers will be guided by the evolving dynamics of the retail sector.

“Our vision of the property is driven by the changes taking place in Sarasota and the demand in the marketplace,” Puyanic said.

The myths and truths of summer Three points to ponder as the temperature rises.

t’s difficult to ponder when the weather has been so perfect, but one of these mornings, we’re going to wake up, go outside and it will feel just like someone turned on an oven.

Yes, summer will have arrived.

In contemplating the arrival and the ensuing months, my thoughts turned to some recent interactions with friends and family that caused me to shake my head and begin believing, “there really is fake news!”

Don’t worry, no politics here, just things people should know about. nnn

Studies show antiperspirant is safe to use.

Here’s the first myth.

My son visited from Chicago and when put together with his sister and a few cocktails, they began castigating their parents for wearing antiperspirant. You might think this belongs in the category of you “can’t make this stuff up,” but they were totally serious. Why? Because of the aluminum.

The “criminal” aluminum causes breast cancer, and even closer to home for our age cohort — Alzheimer’s disease. I tried to tell them that was an urban myth from way back, but they shouted me down. People. We could fill Ed Smith Stadium with the studies that have been done that debunk this.

Without getting too biology 101-ish, we start with an armpit. Sweat ducts release sweat, which is water and salt. Bacteria breaks the salts into smelly acids. With an antiperspirant, the aluminum compound reacts with the salt in sweat to form a kind of gel that temporarily blocks the sweat ducts and acts like an astringent contracting the underarm pores.

Little aluminum even gets into the body and if it did, scientists do not think that aluminum 1) increases breast cancer risk, and 2) plays any role in Alzheimer’s. nnn

Here’s the second.

We met friends from Naples in Fort Myers for a spring training game — Twins vs. the Rays. As we were standing in line to pick up our tickets, my friend hauled out the sunscreen and began spraying it all over her exposed skin. I asked, “What SPF do you use?” The astonishing answer was 100.

Who knew they made a 100?

Most dermatologists recommend SPF 30, according to WebMD.

And my second thought was, if sun is such a concern, why would you spray sunscreen on rather than rub it in? Of course, I didn’t ask those questions in the spirit of not appearing to be a sunscreen resister. However, I couldn’t wait to check this one out because being a faithful reader of many beauty columns, I thought certain that high-SPF sunscreens are not necessary.

Here’s our second biology-ish lesson: SPF refers to the ability of a sunscreen to block ultraviolet rays that cause sunburn.

Unfortunately, these numbers — 15, 30, 45, 100 — are misleading because the consumer thinks they give you twice or three times or four times the protection. Truth is an SPF 15 blocks about 94 percent of the UVB rays, and SPF 30 raises that to 97 percent and SPF 45 98 percent.

Most dermatologists recommend SPF 30, according to WebMD. Here’s what is most important about using your sunscreen: Make sure it’s water resistant; apply 30 minutes before going outside; reapply every two hours; and use it liberally — at least a one-ounce portion, which is a shot-glass amount — and rub it in well.

Both are DNA changers, and once our DNA is compromised, cancers can occur. Mutations can cause colonies of rogue cells that become tumors.

In the case of processed meats — cured, smoked, salted — it’s the sodium nitrates that are added to the meat to act as a preservative. Once the nitrates are in the body, they can form nitrosamines, which are chemical compounds that are carcinogenic.

So, what’s a carnivore to do?

Are scientists suggesting that we give up all red meat and processed meat — even turkey bacon? Not quite. There are some standards that help us gauge how much is too much.

The number 50 grams per day seems to be the balancing point.

At that number, your risk of colorectal cancer — the cancer most influenced by meats — increases by 18%. To give you a real food example, 50 grams is the equivalent of six slices of bacon or one hot dog or two slices of ham or five slices of hard salami or two slices of Canadian bacon. I don’t know about you, but I’ve been known to pick two out of the five in one day quite often. It’s definitely food for thought.

PS: And it’s food for thought for food producers as well. Kraft Heinz Co. last week announced it’s reformulating Oscar Mayer hot dogs by removing artificial preservatives and added nitrates and nitrites.

Recently, White House Budget Director Mick Mulvaney proposed eliminating a number of federal programs that help fund programs like Meals on Wheels.

In his announcement, Mulvaney said, “We’re not going to spend [money] on programs that cannot show that they actually deliver the promises that we’ve made to people.” Doing away with Meals on Wheels, he said, would “show compassion.”

This is insulting and false. I see firsthand how profoundly the program impacts the community. Meals on Wheels does make a difference, it does have critical results, and taking away food and human contact from vulnerable people does not “show compassion.”

Sarasota’s Meals on Wheels annually serves more than 160,000 meals to homebound seniors, veterans, disabled people, individuals recovering from surgery or coping with a serious illness, and even children. In most cases, the one meal they receive from us is all they will eat that day.

We think saving a life is a great “result.” How about you?

We fear that this proposed budget cut would leave millions of people in dire situations. For 2.4 million Americans, Meals

on Wheels makes the difference between continuing to live in their homes—where they want to be—rather than moving to a nursing home.

Enabling people to remain at home averts costly healthcare expenses incurred through Medicare and Medicaid. By expediting recovery from illness, injury and surgery, Meals on Wheels reduces unnecessary visits to the emergency room, admissions and readmits to hospitals, and premature placement in nursing homes.

This saves all taxpayers significant money. Studies show that spending one day in a hospital (or six days in a nursing home) costs more than providing one person a daily meal for a year.

Bypass around downtown is the answer There certainly has been and remains a desire to expand the downtown merchant and pedestrian walkable area outward from Main Street, and the area near Lemon always has been a desirable opportunity.

Many years ago, there was major discussion concerning making a traffic loop area around the business district, and the north portion discussed was 10th Street, which I believe would still work, but not the entire 10th Street as in the recent reply from our Alex DavisShaw. I think willing people can make this work if we want it bad enough.

At Fruitville Road and the railroad tracks, just west of Lime, you start the northern bypass, up the railroad right of way and west to where it connects with Orange Avenue just north of 10th. You then tie it into 10th and continue west to U.S. 41.

friends of the Legacy Trail, because they eventually are going to have to put a major bridge over Fruitville Road.

You partner and construct it with their input to the place where the railroad splits west coordinating and adding their needs for their trail on the east side of the bypass-road portion, purchasing what additional footage is needed to comfortably and safely allow for road and Legacy Trail.

You also make the extension to U.S. 41 bike-friendly with wider, safer, bike lanes which we really need to consider for all Sarasota County as we move forward, as is now being done in St. Petersburg.

This thus allows for a major safe evacuation road for our friends on the keys, takes a lot of cut-through traffic off the proposed downtown business extensions, and allows making Fruitville pedestrian-friendly.

I’m sure one can nitpick this to pieces like we seem to do with a lot of things, but it generally makes sense, So, instead of finding a way things won’t work, let’s find a way, as we used to do many years ago, to make it work for the betterment of the overall community.

Divisions form over impact fee changes The city is considering changing the way it calculates some fees for new developments. The development community is wary of the proposal.

As the city examines its transportation impact fee system — and considers changes — representatives from key business and development associations are warning officials to proceed with caution.

During the past year, the City Commission has shown interest in adjusting the way it accounts for the impact new developments have on public facilities and services. In March, the board approved higher multimodal impact fee rates, increasing the price developers have to pay for how they affect the city’s transportation network.

Now, the city is considering another change. Currently, developers planning a project on a vacant parcel can get a credit toward their multimodal impact fee based on previous uses of that property.

If an earlier structure, now demolished, generated more traffic than the new proposed use, the city will reduce the impact fee requirements. This has caused concern among residents such as

Normile said offering a credit to developers in perpetuity doesn’t properly account for the impact of new projects.

On May 1, the City Commission was scheduled to discuss a

provision that would adjust the credit system — perhaps gradually reducing the credits offered over a period of time, or eliminating them altogether after enough time had passed.

The commission pulled the item from its agenda after City Attorney Robert Fournier said his office wanted to refine the language in the proposed ordinance.

But in its draft form, the changes were subject to fierce opposition.

Christine Robinson, executive director of the Argus Foundation,

Kevin Cooper, CEO of the Greater Sarasota Chamber of Commerce, and Jon Mast, CEO of the Manatee-Sarasota Building Industry Association, all spoke at the May 1 commission meeting. All of them warned the board that a misstep in adjusting its impact fee regulations could come with serious consequences.

In Florida, impact fees must meet a “dual rational nexus test.”

That means a local government has to show that there is a connection between a development and a need for improved public facilities, and that any fees will go toward improving those public facilities in a way that serves the new growth.

The speakers at the May 1 meeting said the proposed impact fee changes would charge developers for building new projects, irre-

spective of whether the project’s impact had already been accounted for via previous payments.

“What is being proposed is a redevelopment tax,” Robinson said.

Mast also suggested that the changes would discourage continued growth in the city.

“Regarding home building, this is another example of a job killer,” he said.

Fournier acknowledged the city would need to do additional work to determine an appropriate period of time over which the impact fee credits would fade out.

“I thought it would be preferable, rather than going forward, if we came back with something that provided for the expiration for that credit and come forward with justification and logic for that,” Fournier said.

City staff will examine how other municipalities manage their transportation impact fee system. Fournier hopes to return to the board in June with a revised ordinance for consideration.

Normile encouraged the city to do all the research necessary to draft a legally defensible ordinance that reduces the time period over which developers are allowed credits. She said the proposal wasn’t designed to punish builders or discourage growth, but to properly account for the impact of new projects.

“I think they gain as well by having a good transportation network, which we don’t now,” Normile said.

Red tide questions surface at Siesta Key gathering It’s hardly a new phenomenon — in fact, it’s been around for thousands of years — but Siesta Key residents fear red tide blooms are getting worse.

A red tide bloom struck the shore of Sarasota County’s barrier islands in September and didn’t subside until April.

From September through April, people living along the coast in Sarasota County dealt with a protracted red tide bloom.

Beyond the usual issues associated with red tide — conditions that can lead to respiratory ailments and the death of marine life — residents took note of what seemed like an unusually long period of high concentrations of Karenia brevis algae.

At the May 5 Siesta Key Association meeting, Mote Marine Laboratory and Aquarium volunteer and Siesta Key resident Tommy Vaughan-Birch explained the history of red tide and the conditions in which the algae can thrive. She addressed residents’ most pressing question about the phenomenon: Are humans making it worse?

The answer is complicated, Vaughan-Birch said. The algae

itself is not man-made. The blooms originate 10 to 40 miles offshore, and red tide can be traced back 10,000 years.

But the red tide needs certain conditions to remain in the water.

Vaughan-Birch said nutrient availability and water temperature are key factors in triggering a red tide bloom, with the organism preferring warmer conditions.

Those at the SKA meeting wondered if run-off into the coastal waters — including discharge from the Siesta Key wastewater treatment facility during Hurricane Hermine in September — is exacerbating the red tide blooms.

Mote’s website says there is “no direct link between nutrient pollution and the frequency or severity of red tides caused by K. brevis.” But that just means that human activity isn’t triggering the blooms. Once the algae is in the water, the presence of nutrients from human pollution can facilitate its growth, VaughanBirch said.

“We’re helping — a little bit,” she said.

That also doesn’t necessarily mean the region is doomed to eight-month bouts of red tide forever. The county has regulations preventing the use of fertilizer with nitrogen and phosphorous in summer’s rainy months to cut nutrient runoff into the water.

butions, there is plenty of natural nitrogen and phosphorous in the water, two of the 12 different nutrients on which the algae can feed.

“Let’s just say it’s not a picky eater,” Vaughan-Birch said.

One of the reasons residents are asking questions about red tide is because scientists are still searching for many answers regarding the algae. Mote has five programs focused on red tide. The laboratory is examining possible solutions for the blooms, though it’s difficult to find something that would target just the problematic algae.

“That’s where the rub is,” Vaughan-Birch said. “We have things that kill it. Bleach will kill it — but it kills everything else, too.”

Mote is also working to help increase public awareness regarding red tide outbreaks. The laboratory’s Beach Conditions Reporting System shares daily updates on the conditions at more than 30 beaches in southwest Florida.

Mote is developing an app that will let people report signs of red tide when they encounter it in real time.

While there may not be satisfactory solutions for red tiderelated issues now, scientists at Mote are dedicated to doing what they can to unravel the remaining mysteries behind Karenia brevis.

Players lowers asking price for bayfront land The Players Centre for Performing Arts cut the price of its North Tamiami Trail home by $3 million.

The board of directors for The Players Centre for Performing Arts announced May 4 it would reduce the asking price for its property at 838 N. Tamiami Trail from $12.5 million to $9.5 million.

The property hit the market a year ago, when the theater announced plans to move to Waterside at Lakewood Ranch.

At the time, Players officials said they believed a buyer could be found within 12 to 18 months.

Ian Black, whose firm Ian Black Real Estate is managing the listing, said the feedback the property has generated since it hit the market indicated that a price reduction would help create more serious interest.

“This isn’t the first time we’ve listed a property at a number we had to readjust going forward,” Black said. “We tried it; we hoped it would get up around that kind of level.”

Black didn’t offer any predictions for when a buyer will emerge, but said the Players is flexible about the timeline of any purchase agreement. A portion of the property is zoned for an

18-story residential building, and Black guessed that would likely represent at least one of the uses of the land.

“Like all this kind of property, there’s no question the highest and best use is potentially for residential,” Black said.

Michelle Bianchi, CEO and managing director of The Players Centre for Performing Arts, said as recently as last month she hoped the board would be patient with its original $12.5 million asking price.

Speaking to 25 theater ambassadors at a special function at the Lake Club clubhouse in Lakewood Ranch, Bianchi cited confidence in the higher asking price because the property offers “the unobstructed view of the bay.”

The theater’s new $30 million complex will be the anchor of Waterside Place. The theater group hopes to build in three stages, roughly $10 million each, if a capital drive and the sale of its existing theater didn’t raise enough money to build in one shot.

“The board feels confident that lowering the asking price will open up more opportunities for finding the right buyer for this property,” Bianchi said May 4 in a release. “We see this as a positive step toward fulfilling our ultimate goal of building a beautiful new complex in Lakewood Ranch.”

Officers made contact with the neighbor and told him to keep the dogs inside until he could fix the gate. The neighbor said he would be sure to do that.

Officers were unable to contact the neighboring property owner, and no witnesses reported seeing the person responsible for the spraypainting.

Healthy Start hosts annual luncheon

uests of the Giving Sarasota a Healthy Start Luncheon didn’t go to the Van Wezel Performing Arts Hall for a show, but they were in for quite the performance.

The Healthy Start Coalition of Sarasota County gathered with its partners and supporters on April 28 at the Van Wezel for its annual luncheon.

Before the program began, guests were treated to a per-

formance from the students of Stage Door Preschool.

Emcee City Commissioner Suzanne Atwell spoke on the importance of Healthy Start.

The organization offers support and services to expecting and new mothers and their infants.

Six decades of service

On its 60th anniversary, Junior League of Sarasota members prove to be concerned with more than pearls and cocktail dresses.

Three women changed the Sarasota philanthropic scene 60 years ago, and today, locals are still reaping what they sowed.

The Junior League is a national women’s philanthropic organization based on a three-part mission statement: “promoting volunteerism, developing the potential of women and improving the community through the effective action and leadership of trained volunteers.”

In 1957, Bitsy Robertson, Suzanne Bissell and Marilynn Koach decided to pursue that mission locally.

“That was what we really hoped to do, to train women to do volunteer work,” Bissell said.

“That’s what it has been from the very beginning and has never changed.”

The first step, however, was time consuming — getting the support they needed from local like-minded women.

Bissell, 90, wrote in a 25th anniversary column for the league’s monthly magazine, SandScript, that the three founders spent a great deal of time at Koach’s kitchen table during those early years. They sat with lists of potential members sprawled out before them beside letters from the parent organization, now called The Association of Junior Leagues International Inc., stating strict bylaws and regimens to be followed.

Once they had a well-advised plan and a list of about 150 women between the ages of 21 and 40, they sent out hand-written invitations for the first informational

meeting.

That meeting was the beginning of a 60-year legacy of community service during which the Junior League of Sarasota start-

ed a nonprofit (Children First, originally Sarasota Day Nursery), helped lay the foundation for another (Child Protection Center) and participated in countless service projects that bettered the lives of some of Sarasota’s most disadvantaged residents.

One of the first service projects that Bissell remembers JLS taking on was the Library ShutIn Service during which members delivered books to people who couldn’t get to the library.

Another was the Traveling Suitcase Museum, later renamed the Pioneer Program, in which members traveled to local schools to teach the history of Sarasota.

President Britt Riner notes that though JLS also does classic service projects, such as food drives, the organization’s true change-making force comes from its hands-on service work.

This year, for example, JLS gave 28 slow-cooker classes to residents in need of food assistance as part of their hunger outreach program. Every participant went home with their own slow cooker and a bag of groceries to get them started on the simple, affordable entrees — by the end of May, they will have given out nearly 306 slow cookers.

One of Riner’s most rewarding JLS moments was watching a Spanish-speaking woman’s enthusiasm during one of these classes, then getting to know her in her native language afterward.

“There was just a level of dignity that was subscribed to her,”

Riner said. “We weren’t just giving her food, we were giving her a skill that she could take home and then prepare [a meal] for her family.”

For Bissell, seeing the enthusiasm of the early members and their dedication to the organization was most rewarding. She remembers JLS women getting babysitters to watch their children so they could watch others’ children at Sarasota Day Nursery.

Women’s work was mainly confined to the home 60 years ago, so JLS has had to adapt to the needs of modern women — especially because Riner estimates that about 90% of its members have full-time jobs outside of the home. She said that the current need to plan meetings around full-time work schedules is one of the biggest changes in the organization.

Asked the value of looking back on the past 60 years of JLS history, Bissell’s response echoed the 2016-2017 JLS theme of “sow, grow, reap.”

“To know where we started and where we’ve come,” she said.

“Have we made progress from the beginning to now? You can only do that if you look back and decide that there was an integral place for this organization.”

he NBA playoffs might only be in the middle rounds, but there was a basketball championship game held May 8 in Sarasota that rivaled anything you’d see on TV. Well, maybe not quite. There was enough skill on display, however, for the group to be taken seriously.

It’s called The Bunker League, and it’s run by Dennis Bunker, a Sarasota resident originally from Michigan who played college ball at New Mexico Highlands University. There are two divisions, a 40-and-up group that plays Monday nights, and a 50-and-up group, that plays Wednesdays, both at the Longwood Park gym.

Bunker hopes to add a 60-and-up division.

Bunker used to play basketball all the time — he was an excellent player, according to himself, until a cheap shot from a defender injured his hip. The downward injury spiral began and eventually sent Bunker to the sidelines. The cheap shot Bunker suffered was the impetus for Bunker becoming a stickler for safety.

The Bunker League has a physical list of rules its players follow.

They mostly follow high school regulations, with a few exceptions. Games are four-on-four because of the size of the court.

Any defender with a foot on the charge square under the basket will be called for a blocking foul if contact is made. Only five players can stand in the lane on freethrow attempts, and the ball is live on the shooter’s release. To enforce these rules, Bunker has hired some of the best referees in the area, including Sarasota’s John Atanasov, who has worked NCAA Division I college basketball games and has dreams of making it professionally.

Bunker puts an emphasis on respect. Skill level is a small factor in whether players can join (there is a wait list), but a bigger factor is character. Bunker will not stand for dirty play. Before the championship game between Hawley Motors and Harman Painting (teams are sponsored), Bunker addressed both teams, reminding them each player gets one complaint on the night.

“Can’t sell ‘em, can’t trade ‘em, can’t save ‘em,” Bunker said. He then walked back to a small table set up between team benches, which held a small scoreboard and the official score sheet. Bunker kept track of both, as he does every night. He implemented a rule calling for mandatory substitutions every five minutes. Players must play at least 20 minutes

each game, so everyone gets his money’s worth, Bunker said.

There’s also a rule that states the commissioner’s decision on all matters is final. Not that the players mind. After the game, Mike Phillips, a Venice resident who plays in the league, said Bunker runs “the best league” he’s

ever played in, “by far.”

“There’s respect,” Phillips said of the players in the league.

“There’s never any miscommunication. It’s a great group.”

It’s also a competitive one.

Games are played at a pace faster than one would expect from an age-exclusive league like this one.

Players still post up, set screens, drive the lane and, especially Hawley Motors’ Ken Lane, with an off-kilter stroke that is nonetheless effective, hit deep 3-pointers.

“If you’ve never seen us play, for this age group, you’ll go ‘Wow, these guys are pretty good,’” Bunker said. “Tremendous shooters.”

After each game, players make the short jaunt to Evie’s Tavern, on Whitfield Avenue, for beers and stories of basketball and life.

The league keeps things interesting by implementing a draft before each season, of which there are five per calendar year. “Cores” of three players are allowed to stick together, like LeBron James, Kyrie Irving and Kevin Love of the NBA’s Cleveland Cavaliers do.

The night is filled with ribbing of the highest order. If players have sensitive feelings, they shouldn’t attend the draft, Bunker said.

Dennis Walker, who is part of the Hawley Motors core alongside Lane and John Edwards, said the trio has played together for more than 20 years. He loves the Bunker League because like Phillips, he loves the league’s camaraderie.

He also fits right into the league’s allowance of egos.

“I’m the best there is,” Walker said, laughing.

After the final buzzer, players help put away the chairs and tables. Good game, everyone, Bunker said. Harman Painting won, 72-58. He reminds them the new season starts May 15. He will finish tallying up stats at Evie’s.

Bunker hopes to someday get back on the court himself. Until then, he will keep the fun going for his friends, because there’s no way he’ll let the league he has created die now.

“I do it for the love of the game,” Bunker said. “I thought it was important to give back to the community.”

Junior takes home the high jump state title

I

t was May 5, and it was darker than sin, and it was raining.

Selfishly, those are not ideal conditions for taking pictures. They are also not ideal conditions for competing in the high jump at the FHSAA Class 4A boys state championship meet, but that’s what Sarasota High junior Jaasiel Torres had to deal with at IMG Academy.

I first wrote about Torres in our March 10 edition. Then, he had just jumped 6 feet, 11-1/2 inches, the highest leap in the country at that point in the season. It’s not anymore — Vernon Turner, from Yukon High in Oklahoma, jumped an incomprehensible 7 feet, 6 inches — but it’s still an incredible accomplishment.

Unfortunately, I was never able to watch the 5-foot-10 Torres jump at a meet for that feature, only at practice. I was not going to pass up that opportunity at the state meet. So there I was, and there he was, despite the conditions.

“I’ve jumped at night before, like once,” Torres said. “I’ve jumped in the rain once, but never in the rain at night. It was pretty cold when it was raining, so it was not a good combination.”

The conditions caused Torres’ competitors to drop like a New Year’s Eve ball on Dec. 30: Too early. No one jumped to his potential, Torres said. While he didn’t alter his technique at all

Still, Torres wasn’t happy.

“I didn’t jump too good today,” he said.

The next day, I watched Torres take ninth place in the Class 4A boys triple jump. Not quite as impressive, objectively, but being top-10 in the state at anything is an accomplishment.

Add that to his high jumping accolades, and now we’re really talking.

Torres has the chance to be special. He has only been jumping since last season, and he’s a junior. With one more summer of gaining strength and refining technique, there is no limit on what he can accomplish, not just statewide, but nationally. I can’t wait to watch him reach his potential.

Hopefully, for his sake and mine, that potential will be reached in the sunshine.

enough to change the assumed outcome. While competitors crashed into the bar over and over, Torres remained calm. In the air, his body moved like it belonged there, his back bending into a concave shape, his legs dangerously curling like a spider’s around the bottom of

the bar before suddenly straightening as he falls, successful.

He repeated this aerial dance until he was jumping only against himself, seeing how high he could go. He was bested by the bar at 6 feet, 7 inches, short of his personal best but 4 inches better than second-place fin-

What is the appeal of basketball to you?

Just the competition. Every play is different, every game is different. You have different matchups.

Who can figure out how to win?

What is your favorite basketball memory?

My favorite memory is going to the state tournament in college in 1992, when I played at Florida College. My sophomore season.

I scored 24 points in front of a hometown crowd at the Manatee Civic Center (now the Bradenton Area Convention Center), including 19 straight in the second half.

What hobbies do you have?

I drag race. I just got back from Georgia drag racing cars. My father (John Speight) started me in it as a kid. When I’m not playing basketball, I’m drag racing.

What is the best piece of advice you have received?

Never give up on what you think you can accomplish. Never give up. If people say you can’t do something, if you listen to them, then you can’t do it. If you just do what you feel you can do and keep moving forward, I think you can achieve anything.

When did you start playing basketball?

I started playing basketball as a freshman in high school in 1986.

I had a high school coach named Wade Bellamy. I was a trainer on the basketball team. One night, they were scrimmaging, and they were short a guy on the varsity team. He asked me to come out, to help out. I played, and I was getting rebounds and hustling, and he said, “Hey, you’re playing basketball from now on.” He taught me how to play ball.

What was the best vacation you have had?

My fiancee (Emily Morris) took me on my first cruise ever. We went to the Bahamas for like a little three-day cruise. I’m not a fan of water, so she wanted to break me in and stuff. Now, we have another cruise planned, a five-day cruise.

The whole crowd was laughing, stomping the bleachers and stuff.

That was probably five years ago.

YOUR NEIGHBORS POTTY MOUTH I am the mother of three boys. I love my boys more than anything. However, they do life very different. When my youngest son was 4, he was watching the cartoon version of the “Clone Wars.” From the next room, I heard one of the storm troopers say, “What the hell was that?”

I peeked in to see Kyle watching the show intently. It seemed as though he had missed the h-word and that it had gone right over his head.

About a week later, Kyle and I surprised my son Dylan at his school for lunch. Another endearing characteristic of a son is that they have to go to the bathroom at the most inopportune times and in public places. Kyle declared it was an emergency, so we took the long walk to the front office restroom. It was so quiet in the office that you could hear a pin drop. Anyone in or near the office can hear any and all restroom noise.

It is at this quiet moment that Kyle decides to pass gas quite loudly, I might add. I look at him and without missing a beat he said, “What the hell was that?”

I kneeled down next to him and began to explain that he is not allowed to say the h-word.

I had to turn my head to hide how hard I was laughing. We sat there for a good five minutes — him on the pot and me with my head buried in my shoulder laughing. Needless to say, that episode of the “Clone Wars” mysteriously vanished.

rom handling temperamental toddlers to obstinate adolescents, the challenges of motherhood never cease. In honor of Mother’s Day, we asked Sarasota mothers to share some of motherhood’s most memorable moments.

Life as a mom often features chaotic and hilarious moments.

My children, Thad and Kameron, could not be more opposite and not just because one is a boy and one a girl. When Kameron was 5, we were walking in the mall holding hands when I began to sing to the music. All of a sudden, I felt a little hand tug mine gently then say, “Mom, please stop! That embarrasses me!” I knew right then and there it would not be the last time (I embarrassed her). That awareness and maturity has made her what she is today — a truly loving and supporting sister of a brother with Down syndrome. She received her Ph.D. in developmental psychology because of him and has always been his biggest cheerleader!

I am truly blessed to have two special children in their own way.

My husband, David, came home from a difficult day at the office and poured himself a glass with ice and vodka. He went to the bathroom to wash his hands, and when he came back he looked at his glass and tried to figure out why some was missing.

Xavier, our 2 1/2-year-old son was standing there rubbing his tummy saying “That was good, Dad. I want some more.”

I scolded my husband and told him we can’t send a preschooler to school with a hangover.

ROAD RAGE We were doing yard work, and Max was tooling around in his plastic Little Tykes car. At one point, he stood with furrowed brow, beating on the squeaky horn and said something ... absolutely terrible. Something an 18- or 80-year-old should never say, much less a toddler.

From that moment on, my husband and I understood that our words and actions were on constant display.

Some of my happiest moments have come upon learning that our better moments have had an impact — days off they have spent volunteering instead of sleeping in. My younger son’s decision to play percussion in his school band. I cried when he asked me for a pair of my drum sticks.

They are watching and listening ... always. Also, try not to curse in front of your children.

Sarasota Chorus of the Keys recently awarded $2,000 each to three high school seniors interested in pursuing a musical college curriculum.

The group’s Sheridan E. Brown Memorial Scholarships went to Alex Gruendl and David Murray, both of Riverview High; and David Newell of Suncoast Polytechnical.

Gruendl plays the piano but focuses on vocal performances and was a member of his high school men’s choir, mixed choir and chamber choir. Murray plays a variety of string instruments and also sings in Riverview’s men’s, mixed and chamber choirs.

Newell plays violin in the Sarasota Youth Choir and performs with the Sarasota Youth Opera.
