Deputy in need The Sarasota County Sheriff’s Office is asking the community to rally around a deputy who lost nearly everything she owned in a fire.

Sheriff’s Deputy Anna Ferguson was asleep in her home around 3 p.m. on Jan. 22, when her 21-year-old stepson woke her and told her there was a fire.

When her husband returned from picking up their 7- and 11-year-old kids from school, their home and Anna’s car were destroyed.

As crews complete construction of an 18-story condo at 624 S. Palm Ave., another developer is planning to build another high-rise next door.

Another 18-story luxury condominium is coming to the bayfront, a sign of continued demand for high-end downtown residences.

atrick DiPinto said deciding to build a high-rise condominium at 605 S. Gulfstream Ave. was an easy choice.

“It is truly one of the last of its kind on the bayfront,” DiPinto said. “We’ve got an incredible piece of property that has over 100 feet of direct Florida waterfront views.”

That’s why DiPinto’s company, Seaward Development, spent more than $9 million to buy out the 14 owners of the Versailles condo, built in 1974 on the Gulfstream site. And on Jan. 16, Seaward filed a preliminary application to knock down the existing structure and build an 18-story, 25-unit condo in its place.

Buying a condo building only to demolish it and build a new one is a costly endeavor.

But the sustained demand for bayfront residences near downtown Sarasota makes the investment worth it, even with other condo projects in development nearby. (And as close as next door: An 18-story, 17-unit condo is under construction on the neighboring property at 624 S. Palm Ave.) DiPinto said the units, which will average 4,000 square feet with four bedrooms, are marketed toward island residents who don’t want to significantly downsize from a single-family home.

The units won’t go on the market until March, though construction likely won’t begin until the end of the year.

And yet, Seaward said it already has seen significant interest from buyers.

“We have had dozens of Realtors call us with prospects who want to be downtown,” DiPinto said.

FOLLOW THE PLAN

Since 2013, developers have moved forward with a series of 18-story downtown structures near the bayfront. That’s the maximum height allowed for buildings in Sarasota, permitted only on properties zoned downtown bayfront.

Starting with The Jewel at 1301 Main St., at least eight projects in the past five years have included plans for 18-story buildings. The Quay development likely will have multiple high-rise structures. Two more properties zoned for 18 stories — one at Fruitville Road and U.S. 41, the other at 838 N. Tamiami Trail — lack formal plans but are slated for development in the near future.

Some residents have groused about the recent influx of highrise buildings, but Sarasota offi-

cials say the city is being developed according to plan.

“If it’s consistent with our comprehensive plan and consistent with our zoning, they can just go forward with it,” Planning Director Steven Cover said. “If it’s consistent with both, it’s consistent with where the city wants to go.”

If residents or city commissioners wanted to see a different type of development, Cover said the city does have the means to change its regulations governing new building. But that doesn’t mean the city can suddenly halt all high-rise projects. In Florida, if property rights have been given to somebody, they can’t be taken away without compensating for the lost value.

That means, for example, it could allow increased resi-

dential density in exchange for reduced height. Or, to address other issues, it could go in the other direction — in exchange for mandating wider setbacks from the property lines, the city could allow taller buildings.

Cover, who moved to Sarasota in 2017, has taken note of the focus on luxury residential development near downtown. From a planning perspective, he said that’s not a point of concern — merely a reflection of the demand for that particular product.

“I know since I’ve been here, most of the new developments are the larger, higher-end condominiums,” Cover said. “So I guess there’s a big market for that.”

CONSTRUCTION FATIGUE

Gulfstream Avenue resident Lottie Varano is more wary of the continued development downtown.

Varano lives in the Essex House, where residents have raised a series of complaints about the effects of the neighboring 624 Palm construction site. Because of those complaints, the city is reconsidering its regulations on setbacks for downtown buildings, though no changes have been made.

Although the Essex House won’t be as directly affected by the Versailles redevelopment, Varano encouraged the builder to take concrete steps to address the safety concerns associated with new construction.

“I would like to see, if they are going to no setbacks, that they don’t just say they’re going to be careful — that they do things to be careful,” he said. “Like providing netting to stop the fallout so that they don’t damage the neighbors’ property.”

DiPinto said Seaward has already spoken with neighboring property owners and city staff, and pledged to prioritize safety during the construction process.

“We’re trying to be cognizant of what’s important to our neighbors,” DiPinto said.

And though the project doesn’t even have a formal name yet, the developer is setting lofty expectations for the final product.

“This will be an iconic building,” DiPinto said. “It’s going to be one the city and residents on Palm and Gulfstream are going to be proud of.”

Varano said he recognizes the city can’t pick and choose which high-rise developments to permit, but he wished the city had a mechanism that would slow the rate at which new buildings are going up. Across the street from the Essex House, Seaward has broken ground on another residential project — the five-story, 16-unit 7 One One Palm condo at 711 S. Palm Ave. The safety issues are residents’ most pressing concern, but Varano said the constant construction creates a quality of life issue, too. DiPinto said the 605 S. Gulfstream project could be complete by late 2020. Taken together with the 624 Palm development, that’s five years of high-rise construction in one piece of the city.

Varano acknowledged that’s the reality of life in a growing city.

Still, he said he was disappointed downtown residents seemed fated to keep dealing with the nuisances of life around construction sites.

“Are we tired?’’ Varano said.

“Yeah, we’re a little weary — especially those of us who are up in age and trying to spend our retirement years in some peace and quiet.”

Caragiulo won’t seek re-election to County Commission

C

ounty Commissioner Paul Caragiulo will not seek re-election in November, he announced Monday.

“It’s the best choice I could make for my family over the next five years,” he said in an interview with the Sarasota Observer.

In a Facebook post, Caragiulo also endorsed Christian Ziegler, a 34-year-old state committeeman for the Republican Party of Florida.

Ziegler filed to run for Caragiulo’s District 2 seat the same day.

Caragiulo said he most likely won’t consider a role

in state government.

“I’ll stick to my little pond here. It’s just fine with me,” he said.

Ziegler, a fiscal conservative who believes in limited government, said he will be gathering input from residents before identifying his priorities if he were to be elected.

Sidewalk work near Ringling Bridge complete The Florida Department of Transportation on Jan. 19 completed a sidewalk repair project on John Ringling Boulevard that slowed barrier island traffic and frustrated residents along the John Ringling Bridge.

The sidewalk repair was one of FDOT’s final projects following Hurricane Irma, which damaged several hundred yards of sidewalk between Bird Key and St. Armands Circle.

After removing debris and uprooted tree stumps, FDOT crews determined the damage was too extensive to be repaired. So, often with one westbound lane closed, the stretch of sidewalk was rebuilt and sod planted between the road and walkway.

Cardinal Mooney names new principal Cardinal Mooney Catholic High School will get a new principal in July, the Diocese of Venice Education Department announced Wednesday.

Ben Hopper, principal of John Carroll High School in Fort Pierce since 2005, will take the role at Cardinal Mooney on July 1. Hopper’s experience includes 17 years as an administrator and educator at Catholic schools, according to a release.

Hopper will replace interim Principal Stefan Gates.

Residents aim to block commercial project Tahiti Park residents hope to turn two privately owned properties in their neighborhood into parkland.

Melinda Delpech hoped her Jan. 2 appearance at a City Commission meeting could help bring resolution to a North Trail landuse dispute that has been going on for more than five years.

Delpech, president of the Tahiti Park Neighborhood Association, was there to ask the city to do one of two things to stop the potential commercial development of two properties near the neighborhood: buy the land, or keep it residential.

The commission declined to take any definitive action, but Tahiti Park residents did make some progress. As a result of the Jan. 2 meeting, the city is exploring the possibility of buying the land to incorporate into nearby Whitaker Gateway Park.

Although the property owner showed interest in developing the site as recently as 2016, Tahiti Park residents are hopeful an end might be near.

“The city’s got issues with the way the land use changed, and if they could acquire this property and make it a park, I think it’s a win-win for everybody,” Delpech said.

CHANGE AND CONFUSION

The severity of those issues is up for debate.

The city in 2008 changed the future land use classification of the Hampton Road parcels. As part of a citywide update, the property’s designation changed from residential multifamily to community commercial.

In 2012, Steven Bedi applied to rezone the land at 1186 and 1174 Hampton Road. He hoped to build a medical resort on the site, consistent with the commercial future land use designation.

Tahiti Park residents had a problem, though: They said they didn’t know about the future land

use change until Bedi applied for new zoning. They were upset the city adjusted regulations without notification, and said the new future land use classification didn’t fit with the neighborhood.

The two properties are located just off U.S. 41. Neighboring land also has commercial zoning.

But Hampton Road is the only point of access into Tahiti Park.

Because the points of egress and ingress into the proposed medical resort would have to be located on Hampton Road, Tahiti Park residents said any commercial use would cause an issue.

“It would increase traffic on our road — on this substandard road

— and it would create significant safety concerns both within our neighborhood and at that intersection,” Delpech said.

Chief Planner David Smith said staff picked a new designation for the land because of its proximity to U.S. 41, a major corridor in need of new development.

The city acknowledges some mistakes were made. At least one map cataloging the proposed 2008 revisions didn’t include the Hampton Road site — human error, Smith said. But even if residents weren’t specifically notified about the proposed change, City Attorney Robert Fournier said the city met all the condi-

tions necessary to adopt the new future land use categorization.

As a result, he said the city couldn’t remove the commercial designation without inviting a potential lawsuit from Bedi.

Because of the legal issue associated with another land use change, the commission directed staff to investigate the possibility of purchasing the property as parkland, instead.

The board faced another complicating factor: Commissioner Jen Ahearn-Koch, who asked to place the item on the agenda, was formerly president of the Tahiti Park Neighborhood Association.

In that role, she advocated against the future land use change.

Fournier said Ahearn-Koch didn’t have to recuse herself from the discussion, but Commissioner Hagen Brody questioned the propriety of the proceedings.

He also cautioned against conflating neighborhood opposition to nearby development and a proposal to improve a city park.

Bedi, who withdrew his rezoning application in 2017, did not respond to a request for comment.

Although there are still points of contention, Delpech said residents and city officials have found significant common ground.

Now, she’s hopeful that will produce a long-awaited resolution.

“That’s what we want; that’s what the city wants,” Delpech said. “It’s just a matter of whether we and the city and the current property owner can reach an agreement.”

Residents plan to oppose Siesta zoning change STAFF WRITER

Siesta Key residents plan to attend the Jan. 30 County Commission meeting ready to fight a proposed change to the Siesta Key zoning code that business owners support.

On Tuesday, the County Commission is scheduled to consider changing rules in the Siesta Key Overlay District to allow taller buildings in commercial districts to be built closer to the sidewalk.

The rule change would eliminate a requirement for buildings taller than 35 feet to be set back from the sidewalk either a minimum of 25 feet or half the height of the building, whichever is greater.

Instead, setbacks would be considered individually as part of a special-exception process.

“The concern is that in one sense it’s an existential threat to Siesta Key,” said Malcolm Lazin, a representative of the Gulf and Bay Club. “It would change the very nature, fabric and quality of life that marks this Key by virtue of allowing eight-story buildings to be within 2 feet of the sidewalk. This would totally undermine the Village, it would remarkably change the ambience of Midnight Pass Road and certainly affect every neighborhood in Siesta Key.” The issue arose as part of 1-800-ASK-GARY founder Gary

Kompothecras’ hopes to build a hotel near Midnight Pass Road, though plans for the hotel are in flux, pending the zoning-decision outcome, said land-use attorney Charlie Bailey. In December, the Planning Commission recommended approval of the change to the County Commission, after residents spoke in opposition.

Bailey said those concerns were not about the proposed change.

“The voiced concerns have been directed at things such as taller buildings, increased density and whether a hotel is appropriate for Siesta Key,” Bailey said in a statement. “These issues have nothing to do with the zoning text amendment the county is now considering and are completely irrelevant to this discussion.”

According to Bailey, the time to consider if a hotel or other development is appropriate for a certain part of Siesta Key would come after the zoning text amendment discussion. Residents don’t want the discussion at all.

“Nobody on Siesta Key wants to see this change,” said Frank Jurenka, president of the Siesta Key Condominium Council.

“That’s the bottom line.”

Business owners on the Key have said differently, including the Siesta Key Chamber of Commerce, which supports the proposal. They’re interested in brining new and different business to the area.

You have to be all in if you really want to see a new you, expert says.

D

id you know that we just passed the unofficial holiday called “Ditch New Year’s Resolution Day.” Yes indeed; that two-and-one-half weeks into your New Year’s resolutions was Jan. 17.

Once this unofficial holiday was pointed out to me, I became somewhat obsessed with learning more about resolutions and how and when they work.

A Google search repeatedly brought up one expert’s name, so I ordered his book, “Changeology: 5 Steps to Realizing Your Goals and Resolutions,” and dove in when it arrived the next day. John Norcross, distinguished professor of psychology at the University of Scranton, has become the guru of change, and his tome is the bible on the subject.

It turns out that Norcross and his associates have done thousands of hours of scientific research on change, unlike most of the self-help books lining book stores shelves or listed on Amazon. In his introduction, he lays out the facts: “More than 75% of people maintain a goal for a week but then they gradually slip back into old behavior. However, research shows that almost all of the people who maintain a new behavior for three months make the change permanent; the probability of relapse after that period is modest.”

Ergo, his first “rule” is that in any resolution or goal, plan for working the changed behavior for at least 90 days.

His second rule is to be all in.

As he says, “Bring passionate effort and confidence. Change is not a spectator sport.”

THE FOUR CLUSTERS

Norcross defines four clusters that characterize types of change to which people aspire. The first is the bad-habit category. We all know what that entails — all the excesses: eating, drinking, texting, whatever. The second is self-improvement. We want to land a more challenging job, learn French, hike the Appalachian Trail. The third cluster

revolves around relationships — quarrel less with your teenage daughter, or spend more time with an aging parent. And the last cluster has to do with goals that transcend the former clusters. These are more spiritual: I want to be a better person, or understand what my purpose in life should be.

Incredible to me is his assertion that even though these four clusters cover disparate desires, the chops it takes to attack them are the same.

“The process of change is amazingly similar across diverse goals and problems,” Norcross writes. In the process of researching change, Norcross and his team have learned that people progress through the same stages of change for the 50-plus problems they have identified and studied. The same fundamental strategies work, and although the goals may be different, the journey to the goal is the same.

THE FOUR STAGES

Trust me, I’m not going to give you anything but a small taste of what changeology is all about.

I’m only just in the initial steps myself, but it is stimulating food for thought to ponder the steps.

Contemplation: We all recognize this stage. It’s when we step on the scales and experience that sinking feeling. Or, lay awake at night chastising ourselves — again — for getting into a disagreement with a spouse or friend. Typically, people stay in the contemplation stage for a minimum of two years, writes Norcross. The trick here is to avoid chronic contemplation and make a firm decision to take action.

Preparation: Here is where we begin making intentions and taking small steps toward action.

This is where we prepare ourselves for making our New Year’s resolutions, for example. It’s an important step. In a 2013 study, some 60% of Americans in early December said they would make a resolution, but only 40% of them actually did by Jan. 1.

However, those who did were

10 times more likely to succeed than those with the same goals who didn’t make a resolution.

Action: This is putting your resolutions or goals into play.

You are, as Norcross writes, “walking the walk, probably after months or even years of talking the talk.” Accolades will rain down upon you. “You look fabulous,” or “I’m so proud of you,” etc. etc. However, the HUGE mistake here is that this is not the end of the journey.

Anyone who has lost weight and then gained it back will relate to this, as will people who have quit smoking dozens of times, thought they had it licked and lit up “just one for fun.”

Maintenance: This is where the rubber hits the road. It’s all about continuing the change.

Stabilizing behavior change and avoiding relapse is what maintenance is all about.

Really?

Anyone who thinks that change is easy is sadly mistaken.

But, as a friend once opined when I was frustrated about a change I was attempting to incorporate into my life, “Anything worth doing well is going to be challenging and most likely difficult.”

And forget about perfection. When “resolvers” slip up, they often wind up committing what’s called an “abstinence violation,” Norcross said in an interview in the Wall Street Journal.

“If you stayed on budget for six weeks and then you violated the goal, you might say, ‘I blew it, I’m done,’” he says. That’s the wrong approach. “The way you respond to that first lapse profoundly influences whether you’re likely to get back on the horse.”

The key is to not turn a violation into a catastrophe. Go easy on yourself and don’t view six weeks of changed behavior as a waste. That’s when “they go from a slip to a fall,” he says.

Here is the correct approach: If you view that it’s human to mess up and decide to recommit, the results can be astounding.

“Turns out the slippers are more motivated after the slip,” Norcross says. “It was a wake-up call.”

The key is to not give up, even with a slip or two. We get better at achieving our goals with time. “Some people call that optimism. I call it persistence,” Norcross says.

Sarasota architect Mark Sultana designed both Infinity and Oceane.

The project delivers something new on the island, real estate agents say.

“Most of the things that are in the luxury market on Siesta Key are remodels,” said Jonathan Abrams, a Siesta Key Realtor and a luxury sales specialist. “There’s just very little land opportunity.”

Crossgate Partners bought the 1-acre site near Big Pass in 2017 for nearly $5 million.

“It’s been a vacant lot for a really long time,” Abrams said.

“Typically people want to see those built into something.”

Peter Laughlin, a broker associate with the company that’s handling the sale of the condos, Premier Sotheby’s International Realty, said there has been a lot of interest so far from buyers, especially from northern states.

Two of the condos are already sold.

Moore said it’s going to elevate the Key’s offerings.

“I think it’s going to bring a new level of luxury to the Key that currently is only available in new single-family homes,” he said.

“It’s a level of customization and seclusion that’s just not found any place.”

Oceane Siesta Key is expected to be completed in spring 2019.

A transportation plan is coming together for the 2018 hurricane season, designed to get residents who don’t live near an evacuation center to safety.

With an after-action review scheduled in the coming weeks to evaluate how Sarasota County and its partners responded to Irma, local representatives got a sneak peek at the review’s findings Jan. 19 at the annual Convocation of Governments.

When Irma hit Sarasota in early September, 13 hurricane evacuation centers at county school buildings kept more than 20,000 people and 2,200 pets safe.

None of the centers in the county was in Venice, though mandatory evacuations were ordered throughout the county’s most vulnerable neighborhoods.

Hurricane season begins June 1, and in lieu of constructing or fortifying a shelter in that area, officials are forming a transportation plan to take evacuees to shelters.

“Developing and implementing a transportation plan for the Venice area is the main thing,” said Sarasota County Director of Emergency Management Rich Collins, “because there’s no money for a new shelter.”

During Irma, for example, Booker High held 1,300 evacuees.

Hurricane evacuation centers must meet guidelines from the American Red Cross, the American Society of Civil Engineers and the Florida Building Code. These guidelines are a combination of structural requirements and lifesustaining amenities a building must have, such as bathrooms and food-preparation facilities.

A suitable building can be hardened to meet these standards, and the county is seeking state funding to start that process in Venice. However, that’s a long-term solution.

In October, the county hired Craig Fugate, the former FEMA administrator, to lead the review.

Three peer reviewers also offered input on the county’s strengths and weaknesses in preparing for a major storm. Their findings will be presented Feb. 9 to the same group of local representatives.

Sarasota County Commissioner Charles Hines said the timing of the review is important as officials prepare for future storms.

“The pressure we’re feeling right now — at least I am — is, hey, the next hurricane season is coming,” he said.

“Most of our education to the public is in April and May. When we come out of the [Feb. 9 meeting] here’s our game plan so we can get that to those people, so we can say, ‘If this happens again ... ’”

Pettingell tops 2017 real estate sales volume RYAN BUTLER NEWS INNOVATION EDITOR

Realtor Roger Pettingell wasn’t surprised about breaking another personal sales record. He was amazed that record was a figure he thought was unobtainable.

Pettingell, a Coldwell Banker Residential agent based on Longboat Key, sold 65 properties for $105.43 million in 2017, topping all real estate agents in Manatee and Sarasota counties for the sixth straight year. CHEMICAL PEEL Noon — 2600 block of Hyde Park Street Property damage: While a woman was driving down the street, she heard a loud noise that sounded as if an object struck her car. She then heard a loud fizzling sound, as if something were on fire. She kept driving and stopped at a nearby gas station. When she got out, she found a significant amount of paint was burned off the rear passenger side of her car. She believed someone threw something at her vehicle. An officer observed a chemical appeared to have burned the paint off the car.

STORE PET 6:55 a.m. — 3500 block of North Tamiami Trail Assist other agency: A store employee called the police about a loose dog inside the business. After first noticing the dog running around the store, workers were able to get it outside, but it later came back inside. When an officer arrived at the store, the employee was holding onto the dog, which was not aggressive.

The officer and employee could not find any tags on the dog, so the officer called Animal Services to take control of the dog. The employee gave the officer a box of dog treats to take with the dog.

She said she planned to repair the window herself but did not want

Harold Murrell Robinson, age 92, of Charlottesville, Va., died at home on Friday, Jan. 12. He was born in Sarasota on May 20, 1925, to the late Earl Benjamin Robinson and Mae Irene Rushing.

Harold was the fifth of 11 children.

Harold was preceded in death by his wife, Elizabeth Stimatz Robinson.

Born in Bradenton, Elaine was a lifelong resident of the area. Elaine was “born again” on Sept. 17, 2013, accepting and receiving Jesus Christ as her Savior.

Her four-year battle against cancer came to an end at her home with her husband at her side.

Her sweet, gentle soul was ushered into the presence of our Heavenly Father. She is survived by husband, Rocky Adkins, mother, Florence Mrazek, and sisters Judith Lashley of Rainier Wa. and Marcia Mrazek of Blairsville, Ga.

Interment will take place at Sarasota VA National Cemetery. Toale Brothers Funeral Home, Colonial Chapel has been entrusted with the arrangements.

In later years, he joined a local businessman to open several small convenience and gas stores throughout the Charlottesville area.

He later started a construction business called Robinson Enterprises hanging sheetrock in new homes and remodeling/ restoring older homes in Charlottesville and Albemarle county. Harold hung up his tool belt at the age of 85. The family thanks Teague Funeral Home, members of the Ivy Creek Methodist Church, and the Hospice of the Piedmont for their excellent care in his last days.

He is survived by one sister, Dorothy Longmire of Fort Lauderdale. He leaves his daughter, Candice Robinson Montero of Charlottesville; and his son, Richard R. Robinson of Palmyra, Va.; his grandchildren, Jerrad A. Fiore (Noelle) of Sacramento, Calif., Russel Robinson of Palmyra, Va., Elizabeth Montero (Shawn) of Johnson City, N.Y., Alexis Montero of Rocklin, Calif.; and his great-grandsons, Giovanni Fiore of Sacramento, Calif., and Aidan Dennis-Simeone of Johnson City, N.Y. Harold is also survived by many nieces and nephews who reside in Florida, Texas, North Carolina and Georgia. Harold enlisted in the Navy in 1942 and served as an Electrician’s Mate First Class. He was honorably discharged in 1948. He served in both the Atlantic and Pacific theaters. He sailed on escort ships in the North Atlantic delivering supplies and weapons to Murmansk, Russia during the early years of World War II. He patrolled the Atlantic coast line of the U.S. and South America searching for enemy submarines. He was present at the siege of Manilla, Philippines.

hristian McKay has always been strong, physically.

Her parents, Frank McKay and Leslie Burch, have told her stories about her strength.

They would hold one of their arms out for her to grab, and a 2-yearold McKay would use it as a pullup bar. It’s a story that would work as the opening chapter of a Greek myth. McKay vaguely remembers doing it once. So her story, unlike that of Heracles or Achilles, has some merit.

McKay’s literal strong start didn’t lead to much for a while.

She never played sports, and though she liked running, she never ran an actual race. She didn’t take regular visits to the gym or weight room. She didn’t see a reason to.

Then, she got to Booker High.

Things were harder now. Life was more stressful. McKay didn’t know if she’d be able to handle it for four years, so as a sophomore, McKay decided to try weightlifting. She knew it would be a challenge, and that was the point — she wanted to get stronger mentally.

It worked, McKay said, and she became one of the best weightlifters in Florida. She finished second at the Class 1A state meet’s 199-pound division last season as a junior, lifting a total of 410 pounds. Now a senior, McKay’s sole focus is bringing home gold.

To do so, McKay has made changes to her diet, now following a “ketogenic” plan that she

researched and put into practice by herself.

“That basically means no carbs,” McKay said. “Well, 50 grams a day. Plus 200 grams of fat a day, and 10% of everything you eat has to be protein. No sugar, either. Glucose is a carbohydrate — remember that.”

McKay is full of nutrition facts now (“Sugar is three times more addicting than cocaine,” she said, though this is a source of tension in the science community), but the diet change was less a voluntary experiment and more a necessity. McKay said she arrived for the year’s first workout, in October, weighing 206 pounds. Her coach, Bob Smithers, wouldn’t be happy with that, so she told him she weighed 196 — and then did everything in her power to drop the weight before he found out her secret.

It worked. Since then, McKay has dropped 26 pounds and two weight classes while maintaining her strength. At the 1A-7 regional meet Jan. 18, McKay benched 240 pounds and 195 in the clean and jerk for a 435 total and a firstplace finish.

Smithers said he’s not surprised

by McKay’s success or work ethic.

She’s always had the talent, he said, and this year she’s managed to put everything together. Her dedication to her diet and training matches her goal of gold. It’s been impressive to watch, he said.

McKay’s road hasn’t always been smooth. During a preseason meet at Port Charlotte High, McKay attempted to lift 185 pounds but fell onto her heels.

Afraid the bar would land on her chest, she pushed it away from her upper body. It connected flush with her airborne right leg, creating a still-visible dent. McKay said it looked worse at the time, but she still can’t feel the tactile corpuscles of her shin (which she learned about in anatomy class).

McKay took a day of rest before resuming her training.

“We didn’t go to the hospital,” McKay said. “We’re weightlifters.

We just put some ice on it.”

Whatever mental toughness McKay was looking for when she started weightlifting, she’s found it. With one goal down, there’s only one left. She’ll compete for the state title Feb. 2 at Panama City Beach.

Fulfilling a fantasy A group of O’s fans travel to Sarasota for a week of unparalleled nostalgia.

I

don’t know if there’s been anything more appropriately named than Dream Week.

It’s the Baltimore Orioles’ version of a fantasy camp, held mainly at Twin Lakes Park with a few games a day played at Ed Smith Stadium. This year’s iteration began Jan. 21 and runs through Jan. 27, and features such past O’s players as outfielders Mike Deveraux and Gary Roenicke, and pitchers Ross Grimsley and Tom Niedenfuer. Hall of Fame pitcher Jim Palmer and popular catcher Rick Dempsey also helped at the camp, according to a news release from the club.

If you don’t know, this is a week for adults (30 or older) to get training from those stars, and play games against each other. They also get personalized jerseys (home and road), daily breakfast and lunch in the clubhouse, a locker space, treatment from the Orioles athletic training staff, etc. They’re treated like MLB players, essentially.

It’s a neat experience. It’s also a costly one, with everything, including roundtrip travel from Baltimore to Sarasota, coming out to $4,601. Not everyone came from Baltimore, but that

gives you an idea. There’s a lot of things on which a person can spend thousands of dollars. My question, in talking to Dream Week participants, was why they decided to spend it here.

For some, like Mariano Nino, the trip is a highlight of a baseball-loving life. Nino, 42, is from San Luis Potosi, Mexico.

He didn’t get many baseball games down there as a kid, but he did get the 1983 World Series, which he watched with his family. Some family members were rooting for the Philadelphia Phillies, so he went against them and chose — well, you can guess the rest.

The O’s won that championship and Nino’s heart. He’s been to Baltimore five times since then, strictly to watch his team, and plans family vacations to the U.S. around where the O’s will be at the time. This year, he’s going to Seattle in September for a three-game set. When he saw an advertisement for this year’s Dream Week, he knew he had to do that, too. It’s his first time participating.

“It’s amazing to see the stadium,” Nino said while standing in the home dugout. His eyes moved across the stadium’s horizon, then down to the field.

“It’s different than on TV. The grass is so nice.”

Then there are guys like the 52-year-old Scott Ward. A lifelong Orioles fan from Cris-

field, Md., he was lucky enough to attend playoff and World Series games during the “Orioles Magic” run of the late 1970s.

He’s wanted to cross this off his bucket list since his early 30s.

Last year, he did, and he plans on coming again next year.

“It’s a big thrill to play for and be coached by my boyhood idols,” Ward said.

It’s also being able to play baseball with people who have a similar interest, he said. There’s a natural camaraderie. You see people from one year to the next and reminisce on old memories

while creating new ones.

The final piece of the Dream Week puzzle clicked for me when I chatted with Jim Arkin. At 31, Arkin is one of the youngest participants of the week, and one of the best. He hit a three-run homer in the first inning, then pitched a scoreless second for his team. He also happens to be from Olney, Md., my hometown.

It’s his second Dream Week.

He may not have come at all if his father, Doug Arkin, 62, hadn’t gone in 2016. The two love Orioles baseball. Jim lives in Philadelphia now, but Doug is

still in Olney.

“It’s the best thing in the world,” Jim said. “That bonding experience you get with your dad as a kid? Here, you get to do it as an adult, and you appreciate it more. You don’t appreciate it enough as a kid.”

While turning a double play in a game Jan. 22, Jim fired the ball to Doug for the second out.

That’s something he dreamed about as a kid, he said. His eyes water a bit when talking about it.

That was the moment I “got it.” All the pomp and circumstance is fun, but what Dream Week boils down to is being a kid again. You play sports with your childhood heroes and have them sign sports cards between innings. It’s “Field of Dreams” come to life, and Jim acknowledges as much.

“I just hope he (Doug) doesn’t disappear into a cornfield after this,” Jim said.

Someday, time will catch up to us all, but I hope that day is far off for the Arkin family and the rest of the camp’s stars. Everyone should get a chance to rid themselves of worry and angst through a nostalgia trip, and not many trips are more powerful than a game of catch.

Like I said, there’s nothing more aptly named than Dream Week.

Pushing the ball up the sideline, turning the corner and crossing it into the middle.

Winning districts the past two seasons and hopefully this year, too. I just like winning (laughs).

My freshman year, I literally broke my back from overuse. I was playing for the school and for a club, and it was too much. I played through the pain that year, and then had to wear a back brace for five months.

What is your favorite food?

Pizza (specifically Hawaiian).

What is your favorite TV show?

“One Tree Hill.” They just took it off Netflix, but I’ve watched it all five times.

What is your dream vacation?

Going to Riverton City, Jamaica (on the outskirts of Kingston) and helping the kids who live in the landfill. I’ve done it, actually.

I started doing it with my sisters (Emma and Hannah McDevitt) and a group in Milwaukee, where I used to live. Then I decided to start a group of my own at Mooney, called Pivotal Directions.

he Sarasota Seafood & Music Festival dished up all kinds of fun for seafood enthusiasts last weekend.

The festival kicked off at 10 a.m. on Saturday, Jan. 20 and ran through Sunday, Jan. 21.

The festival, in its third year, moved to a new location this year to Gulfstream Avenue and Main Street near JD Hamel Park.

Festivalgoers enjoyed live music, including sounds from RJ Howson and the Sarasota Steel Pan Band while they munched on seafood dishes from local restaurants, including Walt’s Fish Market and Duval’s.

Local restaurants showcased their menus during Taste of St. Armands.

Girl Scout goes for the gold Cardinal Mooney’s Faith Holliday built an agility course for dogs at Donte’s Den.

women to change something in their community. It requires 80 hours of work to complete a seven-step process: identify an issue, investigate it thoroughly, get a team together, create a plan, present it and gather feedback, take action and educate others.

Holliday worked with Donte’s Den founder Marsha Panuce to identify the best type of course for the dogs, and then got to work.

She contacted stores in the area and got materials donated from Home Depot, and she got her troop members on board to help her build it.

The agility course includes a teeter-totter to cross, hurdles to jump and poles to weave through.

Holliday said she was a little nervous she wouldn’t be able to complete the project in the 80-hour time frame.

“I actually hadn’t worked on anything like this before. I wanted to do something that was completely new and I could use the skills later in life,” she said. “But it turns out once I actually got all the people together, it went a lot faster than I expected, and the whole process was a lot more fun than I expected it to be.”

And the dogs are enjoying it, according to Panuce.

lot of women have memories of spending time in the Girl Scouts as a kid, earning badges and selling cookies. But far fewer stick with it long enough to earn the Girl Scout Gold Award.

Faith Holliday did.

A 14-year-old ninth-grader at Cardinal Mooney Catholic High School, Holliday researched, planned and built an agility course for Donte’s Den, a home for dogs whose owners can’t care for them, located in Myakka City.

“An agility course is important for Donte’s Den because they didn’t really have anything to focus on the dogs’ agility, and for the older dogs there, they really need to,” Holliday said.

She completed the project to receive the Gold Award — the highest award a Girl Scout can achieve that challenges young

“They really do like the course,” she said. “[Some of the dogs] just kind of look at it … [but] in this cooler weather, they’re loving it.”

Now that Holliday has completed the steps to get the Girl Scouts’ top honor, she is back to working on earning other badges, and is eligible to be named one of 10 National Young Women of Distinction.

To Panuce, Holliday is distinct among her peers.

“When Faith decides that she is going to do something, she sets that goal and she meets that goal, and then she sets the bar higher for herself,” she said. “I so admire a young woman like Faith because she’s gonna go places. There’s no two ways about it.”

Brennan, a 62-year-old who identifies as nonpartisan, ended things on a positive note, saying that every day advances are made in the medical and engineering fields and that he knows acts of human kindness are happening around the United States.

“I am an optimist,” he said. “I believe in this country.”

Since retiring last year, Brennan has enjoyed reconnecting with his family, especially his 3-year-old grandson.

“I want to make sure his future is as safe and secure as mine has been,” he said.

Even the most experienced and knowledgeable professional money managers had to start their quest for investment knowledge somewhere.

When people ask John Brennan what kept him up at night during his tenure as CIA director, he tells them two things: either spicy Mexican food or nothing, because he was so exhausted.

Brennan opened this year’s Ringling College Library Association Town Hall Lecture Series on Jan. 22 at the Van Wezel Performing Arts Hall.

As for a serious answer as to what kept him up at night, cybersecurity was one thing he shared with the crowd.

“The role of the government in a digital domain is still uncertain,” he said.

During Brennan’s speech, he touched on five “buckets of issues,” including cybersecurity.

The others: the CIA, where he worked for 25 years before serving as director (2013-2017); global trends; U.S. relations with Russia and China; and hotspots in the world, such as North Korea and Iran.

Asked what he thinks of the possible Russian collusion case, Brennan said he is happy intelligence committees are pursuing the issue, and that it’s something the U.S. needs to safeguard against in the future.

“If there was that type of cooperation that violated the U.S. laws, and there might be some type of criminal activity, we already have individuals who have been indicted for violating U.S. law, there is

Gocio flips for Principal’s Breakfast

L

ast week, a Gocio Elementary School student told Principal Steven Royce some exciting news.

Not only did the student get a puppy over the weekend, but he was also invited to the Principal’s Breakfast on Jan. 19.

Royce was ecstatic the student thought the breakfast was as exciting as a puppy.

On Friday morning, Royce, and his father, Sid Royce, started making pancakes at 7:30 for the quarterly breakfast that rewards students who received straight A’s the quarter before.

Royce started the breakfasts last year as a way to reward both students and their families for the hard work they all do.

“This is the bar we’re trying to set,” he said.

Since the breakfast’s inception, Royce has seen the number of students who get straight A’s increase. The first breakfast celebrated 60 students. This quarter’s breakfast celebrated 88, the most a breakfast has ever honored.

Although parents were celebrating their kids, Royce made sure they knew it was a celebration for them, too.

“Straight A’s usually don’t happen in isolation,” he said.

Some of the parents felt validation in that, too. Marible Phommathep’s kindergartner Naila got straight A’s. Phommathep said she often works at home with her daughter on school work.

“I feel like I did my job,” she said.
