A community remembers Friends and family gathered June 11 at Fredd Glossie Atkins Park on the corner of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Way and Washington Boulevard to remember Rodney Mitchell, who was shot and killed by a Sarasota County Sheriff’s deputy after a traffic stop June 11, 2012, near the intersection. “It’s his fifth year not with us,” his mother, Natasha Clemons, said during the service. About 30 people gathered to pay their respects to Mitchell, who was 23 when he died. The group lit candles, shared stories and released several Chinese lanterns into the sky, waving goodbye to Mitchell as they floated away.
