A community remembers Friends and family gathered June 11 at Fredd Glossie Atkins Park on the corner of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Way and Washington Boulevard to remember Rodney Mitchell, who was shot and killed by a Sarasota County Sheriff’s deputy after a traffic stop June 11, 2012, near the intersection. “It’s his fifth year not with us,” his mother, Natasha Clemons, said during the service.

About 30 people gathered to pay their respects to Mitchell, who was 23 when he died. The group lit candles, shared stories and released several Chinese lanterns into the sky, waving goodbye to Mitchell as they floated away.

The Players Centre for Performing Arts is marketing its North Tamiami Trail property as a site to develop an 18-story residential building, but the city is exploring a different idea for the land: a parking garage.

The city has a list of potential projects to pursue within the boundaries of the former downtown Community Redevelopment Area. One of those items is the purchase of the theater’s 1.8-acre site, listed for $9.5 million, to support future redevelopment of the bayfront.

I

f you want to kill some time, here’s a question to wrestle with: Where is downtown Sarasota?

That’s easy, you say. A stupid question to ask, really. If you live here, you can pretty much instantly conjure an image associated with that name.

But where does downtown begin and end? If you were sitting in front of a map, where would you draw the boundaries?

If you want to look to an expert for help, you won’t find any clarity. Retail consultant Robert Gibbs said it was the area bound by U.S. 41, U.S. 301, Fruitville Road and Ringling Boulevard. The downtown Community Redevelopment Area stretched from 10th Street to Mound Street, from the bayfront to School Avenue.

On Google Maps, the word “downtown” hovers over Payne Park — that can’t be right, can it?

For downtown stakeholder groups, this isn’t just a theoretical exercise. The Downtown Improvement District is asking other organizations if they’re interested in uniting for a joint campaign to promote downtown.

That’s why, on Tuesday, a room full of downtown leaders sat down at The Francis to have a 90-minute conversation about what “downtown” means, exactly.

COME TOGETHER

Within downtown, there’s a history of fragmentation.

Groups work in isolation toward similar goals. The Downtown Improvement District, Downtown Sarasota Alliance, Sarasota Downtown Merchants Association and Downtown Sarasota Condominium Association all have some overlapping interests.

When the Downtown Improvement District prioritized marketing at the beginning of the year, though, the board agreed it could

more effectively promote downtown if it linked up with other groups. After all, visitors don’t care about stakeholder groups.

They only see one downtown.

It’s not a novel idea. Most recently, the Downtown Improvement District, Downtown Sarasota Alliance and Sarasota Downtown Merchants Association supported the “We Are Downtown” advertising campaign in 2014. That united support quickly dissipated, though, and the campaign relied on merchant funds to stay afloat.

The challenge may be getting groups to commit to something they don’t control. Francine DiFilippo Kent, chairwoman of the Downtown Sarasota Alliance, agrees that working together could be productive. Still, she’s skeptical.

“There probably is a need for it,” DiFilippo Kent said. “Is there a will or desire for it?”

DiFilippo Kent pointed to one area for potential improvement: consistent branding. Different groups put out different maps of downtown. Different districts use different iconography to distinguish their area. If the goal is to create one unified downtown identity, then the message has to be consistent throughout.

“We all have to be on the same page — or at least pages in the same book,” DiFilippo Kent said.

Problems arise when you discuss funding. The Downtown Improvement District generated $640,000 in revenue last year, but board member Mark Kauffman doesn’t want the organization to bear most of the costs — especially if it’s promoting businesses outside of the district.

Before St. Armands Circle had its own taxing district, Kauffman said, area businesses were reluctant to contribute to group advertising. If other people were going to pay to promote the Circle anyway, why bother spending your own money?

Kauffman doesn’t want to see the same thing happen downtown. Everyone has to chip in.

“If we don’t get that, our advertising dollars are going to be constrained to the DID district,” Kauffman said.

Areas like Towles Court, Burns Court and the Rosemary District are why so much of Tuesday’s workshop focused on defining downtown.

To some people, those areas stand out as distinct from downtown. Businesses within those districts could see stores on Main Street as competition.

“Burns Court — they don’t want to be bothered with downtown, because they’re special, and they are different from downtown,” Kauffman said. “The problem is, everyone has their own identity.”

But people such as Tre Michel, one of the organizers of the We Are Downtown campaign and owner of State of the Arts Gallery, said there are no rigid boundaries for visitors.

“When people from the islands come over, the moment they’re at the top of the bridge, they’re downtown,” Michel said.

Downtown Improvement District board member Eileen Hampshire thinks there’s a way to promote a united downtown area while acknowledging the distinct aspects of various sub-areas.

She see the different districts as assets, not liabilities. She wants to promote downtown as a mosaic, one unit made of many parts.

John Moran, operations manager for the Downtown Improvement District, suggested a different focus. Instead of fretting about what is and isn’t downtown, the different groups should distill the identity of the area into a simple message they could easily communicate.

“Downtown is a mindset, not necessarily a geographic boundary,” said Anand Pallegar, the founder of digital marketing company atLarge and the leader of Tuesday’s workshop.

At least half a dozen groups were represented at Tuesday’s meeting, but real estate broker Ian Black pointed out several stakeholders weren’t present. Getting all the organizations to the table was its own challenge. Would it be possible to get everyone to commit to a long-term project?

“That’s going to be quite a tall order to get everybody on the same page and marketing Sarasota as a city of different districts,” Black said.

Tuesday’s workshop was the start of a conversation, but it didn’t produce any solid plan to pursue. Still, the Downtown Improvement District is committed to keeping the dialogue active.

“I don’t want to see, ‘It’s not what I want; it’s not what they want,’ so we all go back to doing what we originally did and it’s all in vain,” said Downtown Improvement District chairman Ron Soto.

“I hope we can all come together.”

Whether downtown groups will actually be able to overcome their divisions — or at least learn to work across them — remains to be seen.

Board rejects hotel bid to narrow Siesta setback

A Board of Zoning Appeals meeting regarding an appeal to allow taller buildings to be placed closer to the sidewalk in Siesta Key created some confusing conversations June 12. “By the time this is over, we’ll all have a headache,” Board of Zoning Appeals Chairman Paul Radauskas joked.

The board heard an appeal from land use attorney Charlie Bailey, the man who is representing 1-800-ASK-GARY founder Gary Kompothecras in his efforts to change existing regulations to build a hotel on Siesta Key. The debate was over how many feet a tall building would need to be from the sidewalk in a commercial district in Siesta Key, like the Siesta Key Village or the Stickney Point Road area.

Donna Thompson, a zoning administrator for the county, issued an interpretation in April that said the minimum setback is 2 feet, except where the building is 35 feet tall or more. In that case, the building must be set back 25 feet from the street, or half the height — whichever is greater.

Bailey argued the interpretation was incorrect. The County Commission has the “unfettered right” to require an applicant to have a higher street yard setback, Bailey said, up to the maximum set out in the code.

“Either the zoning administrator has the final word, or the County Commission has the right to determine what the setback will be,” said board Chairman Paul Radauskas. “That’s really what the crux of the matter is.”

Members of the public urged the board not to side with Bailey. Much of the dissent from the public was about the possible next steps if this appeal was approved: the prophesied hotel on the Key. “The whole Siesta Key is against what they’re trying to do,” said Karen Williams, manager of the Marina del Sol condominium, although what exactly they’re trying to do has been ambiguous from the start.

Assistant County Attorney David Pearce was quick to remind board members more than once not to consider any proposed or potential plans, but to only look at the information and the code in front of them.

After the presentations drew several complaints of confusion, as well as numerous extended silences where discussion and questioning would normally take place, the board eventually voted 3-2 in favor of the administrator’s interpretation. According to the vote, the minimum setback would change invariably if the building’s height exceeded 35 feet, not based on a decision from the County Commission.

Small nonprofits make new plans as 24-hour event is reset for May.

Behind the annual Giving Challenge churns a logistical machine.

The 24-hour campaign sponsored by the Community Foundation of Sarasota County involves partnerships with five local philanthropic groups that match donations to almost 600 area nonprofits.

The Community Foundation has processed, audited and facilitated matches for hundreds of donations in the campaign’s fiveyear history. The Giving Challenge has raised $28.5 million in its five-year history — $13.4 million in 2016 alone.

But this year, the Community Foundation is taking a step back.

The last challenge took place in September. The next Giving

Challenge is slated for May 2018.

“It used to be in May for the first three years, and then the fourth year we moved it to September … and we decided to move it back to May again,” Communications Project Manager Murray Devine said. “We realized if we moved it to May there was no way we could have done it in May 2017 with the amount of time it takes to plan it.”

The Community Founda-

tion maintains a committee that spends a year planning for the one-day campaign. It’s that logistical burden in light of the campaign’s growing popularity that partially prompted the Community Foundation to step back.

“We doubled the amount that was raised from 2015 and we really just realized this is getting big. We need to take more time to figure out what we are doing going forward,” Devine said.

The foundation alerted nonprofits of the change in early March, but it didn’t come as a surprise.

“They do tell us year after year don’t plan for this every year. It might not happen,” Cat Depot Director of Communications Claudia Harden said. “We all know that originally the giving challenge was supposed to be three years instead of five years and out of the kindness of their hearts they continued it. We completely understand they need to step back this year and regroup.”

In 2016, Cat Depot raised $104,271, the most of the 587 nonprofits. When matching funds were added, the total increased to $220,000 — the equivalent to three months of Cat Depot’s operating budget.

out doubt,” Harden said. “To not have that this year is huge.”

To make up for the difference, Cat Depot is introducing its own version of the campaign — the Help Me Out Challenge. It’s taking place from noon to noon Sept.

19-20.

Small nonprofits are taking the brunt of the fundraising furlough.

“This really is like a lifeline for them,” Devine said.

Sarasota Orchestra President and CEO Joseph McKenna, meanwhile, said although the Giving Challenge adds a dynamic dimension to its annual donor strategy, the change won’t affect its overall fundraising plan.

“It’s a relatively small portion of our strategy in dollars but large in significance,” McKenna said.

“We use it as a chance to do things a little bit differently to inspire giving from those who might not be inclined to support.”

Some are even excited about the switch. The May date still falls within many organizations’ fiscal year.

“It’s almost kind of in a way more beneficial because we have done most of our fundraising from October through April,” said Lisa Bechtold, executive director of Take Stock in Children of Sarasota County. “So it gives us a little kick start through the summer.”

Going forward, Devine said the longevity of the Giving Challenge will depend on the willingness of nonprofits to participate and the demands on the Community Foundation and its partners.

“Not that we want to break their hearts, but it’s just not something we can guarantee moving forward,” Devine said. “I think as long as we feel that it’s beneficial to all the stakeholders, then it’s something we want to do.”

Once again, arguably one of the most popular Fourth of July fireworks displays in the area is in jeopardy, as the Siesta Key Chamber of Commerce struggles to raise the money it needs to fund the annual event.

Perhaps “struggle” is too strong a word though, as no one seems to be concerned about the $10,000 shortfall with less than

three weeks remaining.

“There’s always obviously the doubt in the back of your mind — is everyone going to step up again? And every year, they do,” said Chamber of Commerce Chairman Mark Smith.

At the time of publication, the chamber had raised about $30,000 of its $40,000 goal.

ents planning vacations, he said, everyone is going to be shocked that it’s already time for the Fourth of July.

Ann Frescura, the chamber’s executive director and the person overseeing the fundraising, was also confident the money would come together. One of Frescura’s biggest problems is finding new donors, rather than asking the same people to give money again and again.

“The chamber has so many events that I think sometimes it’s hard to reach out beyond the normal 25 people to give to every cause, and we want to expand that base and give others a chance to participate.”

However, Frescura called the community “extremely generous,” which is why the chamber feels confident enough to rely on

sponsors each year.

Daquiri Deck owner Russell Matthes said he and his partners think donating is important because the event draws so much traffic to the area.

Funding the display “is highly important for all the businesses out here, to draw crowds that come out here and enjoy themselves on the beach and spend money while they’re here,” Matthes said, adding “and we’re patriotic, by golly!”

The president of Davidson Drugs, another longtime sponsor, Richard Davidson, said they donate for the same reason.

“It brings families on to Siesta Key during the summer months when it’s slower, and it was a great way to add value to the tourists’ [experience].”

While residents may have complaints about traffic and parking during the event, donating to fund the event could be an opportunity to alleviate that. If you donate $500, you get a parking pass and four seats at the chamber’s viewing area, with guaranteed parking (though they can’t guarantee you won’t sit in traffic at some point getting there and going home).

The number of passes and seats increases with the amount donated, up to 10 passes and 40 seats.

To contribute to the fireworks fund, you can donate via the chamber’s website (siestakeychamber.com) or call 349-3800.

Smith said the fireworks money goes into a fund separate from the chamber’s normal bank account, so all money raised will go toward fireworks only.

“It’s a lot of money to go up in smoke, but it’s for a good cause,” Smith said.

Lido shores up dune protection County staff is working to protect the dunes on Lido Beach in advance of the Sarasota Power Boat Grand Prix and Fourth of July holiday celebration.

Most people looking ahead to the Fourth of July are eager for a long, leisurely weekend of cookouts and fireworks shows.

As Carl Shoffstall gets ready for the holiday, he’s searching for ways to prevent damage to the Lido Key shoreline.

Shoffstall, president of the Lido Key Residents Association, spends a lot of time thinking about that shoreline. Residents on Lido say the beach is perilously thin at the beginning of hurricane season, and worry that a single storm could cause major damage.

“It’s virtually gone,” Shoffstall said.

But the weather isn’t the only threat to the beach ecosystem.

Every year, thousands of visitors descend on Lido Beach for the Sarasota Power Boat Grand Prix, scheduled for July 1 and July 2 this year. Shoffstall fears the big crowds heighten the risk that

people do something harmful to the beach.

Specifically, he’s worried about people walking across the dunes to get to the beach. The dunes are a valuable part of the Lido shoreline. Anchored by vegetation, the dunes are a resource for animals in the area, and they represent a stable source of sand separating the beach from the built environment.

“The dune systems are protection for the residences and businesses across the coastal area,” said Ryan Murphy, operations manager with the county’s Parks, Recreation and Natural Resources department. “When people are walking across it, they’re essentially killing that dune vegetation.”

On June 4, Shoffstall wrote an email to County Commission Chairman Paul Caragiulo and other city and county leaders. During the Memorial Day weekend, he saw people walking though the dunes. He asked the county, which oversees Lido Beach, to consider roping off both sides of the dunes before the boat races. Given the state of the beach, he said it was crucial that officials take proactive steps to defend the dunes.

Within a week, Shoffstall got a satisfying plan from county staff.

He worked with Murphy, who developed a list of precautions

the county could take to protect the beach. The county is working to fence off the dunes as Shoffstall requested along the entire length of the public beach. It will also bring in additional personnel for the weekend of the boat races and install signs along the beach in areas where staff is concerned people might try to cross through to the beach.

The most important thing, Murphy said, is making sure the public is aware of the potential damage people can do. He’s asked Shoffstall to reach out to members of the Lido Key Residents Association to see if people are willing to volunteer to help monitor the

beach and talk to visitors during the holiday weekend.

“A lot of what we can do to protect our dune system is about educating the public,” Murphy said.

The dunes aren’t the only things the county wants to protect. Murphy said staff will emphasize the sea turtle nesting regulations, including the hours people are allowed to be on the beach, and remind visitors to keep the beaches clean.

Shoffstall said the Lido Key Residents Association is also seeking volunteers to monitor the black skimmer bird colony on the beach and to help clean up the

shoreline when the boat race and holiday is over.

Lido Key residents are still pushing strong for some sort of short-term shoreline protection project as they await the potential dredge of Big Pass for renourishment. City staff is investigating its options, but nothing is planned yet.

In the meantime, residents are counting on the county and city to do what they can to make sure things don’t get any worse.

“We are working to make sure we take all the possible measures to protect the beach,” Murphy said.

Players purchase: no It may sound visionary to buy the Players Theatre property.

But pragmatic analysis makes the case against it.

T

wo common analyses business leaders go through when they face tough decisions, opportunities or quandaries over whether to make a particular move go like this: 1) Does the decision being considered fit and align with the organization’s mission? Or does it fall outside the bounds?

2) Span of control. Every organization has a limit on how many challenges it can take on at once; a limit on what its staff can successfully accomplish and control; and a limit on the key resources of people, time and money. Do we have what we need to accomplish what we’ve already undertaken? What effect will this next idea have on available resources?

These analytical exercises came to mind in the wake of Sarasota City Manager Tom Barwin going public with the idea that he thinks it makes sense for the city’s future for taxpayers to purchase the Players Theatre property on the east side of Tamiami Trail, across from the Van Wezel parking lot.

Price tag: $9.5 million.

Go through the analysis.

Mission

If you parse the city’s mission statement while thinking of investing or spending $9.5 million of taxpayers’ money on the Players property, be honest, it would be a stretch to say that property would fall under the rubric of providing high-quality services.

When taxpayers think of city services, they want water and sewers; garbage collected; police and fire protection; and low taxes. They also

want parks, of which this property might be a part.

But to purchase the property, the city will need to increase taxes — or cut services. Even if the city had $9.5 million sitting in a rainy-day slush fund, that would be $9.5 million unavailable for some other use in the future. If a big hurricane hits, the city will need money from somewhere.

Call it an investment, but it also would be a new cash burden.

Here’s another reality: No one knows how long it will take before construction actually begins on redeveloping the 40-acre bayfront property. If you look at how long it took other cities to develop their performing arts centers or bayfronts, the timelines run anywhere from five to 20 years. It took Longboat Key 14 years to renovate its Bayfront Park.

Is that a good use of taxpayer money — to buy and hold? Not only would taxpayers be funding annual maintenance costs while it waits for something to happen at the Van Wezel site, there’s the opportunity cost: The city would be foregoing the cash from a

private development paying muchneeded tax revenue in perpetuity.

The city needs money. And the only way to grow its revenue is to increase taxes or increase its economic base.

Owning this property would increase taxes and reduce the city’s economic base. That’s not “building a prosperous community.”

Span of control

Perhaps it’s our cynicism toward government, but rare is any government entity that is proficient in the real estate business. The city of Sarasota is no exception (e.g. former police station; former Selby Library).

City residents, we would bet, would much rather the staff focus on fixing traffic issues and lift stations; having a well-staffed Police Department; and a government regulatory climate that doesn’t choke, but rather encourages, more business. You know the old saw: If you’re not growing, you’re dying. Sarasota needs to grow to thrive.

Let’s not overlook, either, such things as the $155 million in unfunded pension liabilities; constructing a parking garage on St. Armands Circle; whether to “invest” $12 million into the Bobby Jones golf courses; and funding the city’s necklace of roundabouts. Last year’s general fund budget showed operating revenue falling short of covering expenses by $1.4 million.

We’ve reported in these columns before how City Manager Barwin rang alarm bells that the city’s pension problems are unsustainable — and still haven’t been addressed.

While it may sound visionary for the city to purchase the Players property, in our view, the idea doesn’t fit the city’s mission, and it’s outside of the city’s span of control.

Be prudent. Don’t do it.

Two of our own among top three for the Cabinet

wo of Sarasota and Manatee counties’ leading political and business figures remain among the top three candidates to be appointed by Gov. Rick Scott to the state’s chief financial officer job.

That would be Rep. Joe Gruters and prolific homebuilder Pat Neal.

The third candidate is Jimmy Patronis, currently a commissioner on the Florida Public Service Commission, a former state representative and a close friend of Gov. Scott.

Patronis is from Panama City.

Gruters told us Tuesday Gov. Scott likely could announce his selection

by Thursday, as this edition hits the streets. Lauren Schenone, a spokeswoman for the governor, said: “All we’re saying is the governor will make a decision in the near future.”

The elected constitutional position will become vacant after June 30, when Florida CFO Jeff Atwater officially resigns. Atwater sent an official resignation letter to Scott Monday, although he announced in February his intent to resign.

Scott, meanwhile, had said he wanted to wait until after the legislative session to announce Atwater’s replacement.

Joe Gruters and the president

In the interim, a slew of names has emerged as possible candidates. The most discussed: n Jacksonville Mayor Lenny Curry n Sen. Jack Latvala, R-Pinellas County n Patronis n Neal n Gruters “I’d love to get it,” Gruters told us.

“But I don’t think I will get it.”

Neal declined to comment.

Gruters said he has told the governor three times in face-to-face conversations he would like to be appointed.

But Gruters believes Patronis is the front-runner because of Patronis’ relationship and friendship with the governor. “Jimmy talks to him on a daily basis.”

As always in these political machinations, there is more to this than who’s buddies with the governor. On that score, you certainly could say Gruters ranks high on Scott’s list.

As chairman of the Republican Party of Sarasota County in 2010, Gruters was among the first in Florida Republican circles to go all-in for Scott in his first campaign for governor. Gruters drummed up big crowds at Scott rallies — a fete Scott etched in his memory bank. Gruters did it again in 2014 when Scott ran for reelection.

Another plus on Gruters’ side: He was Donald Trump’s state co-chairman in Florida — along with Susan Wiles, who ran Scott’s first gubernatorial campaign.

Here’s one more possible edge for Gruters: He’s a CPA. To that end, Sen. Latvala told Florida Politics editor

Peter Schorsch Monday: “I’ve told the governor he should select Joe Gruters.

It just makes sense that the person in charge of the state’s books is a CPA.” Neal, meanwhile, in recent years has dipped in and out of the political pool, wavering off and on about getting back into state politics. He served in the Florida House and Senate from 1974 to 1986 and has been an active contributor ever since to political campaigns. Earlier this year, Neal made a $10,000 contribution to Scott’s Let’s Get to Work political action committee.

If you go beyond the friendships, the political intrigue comes into play this way: The CFO position is an elected position. One calculation Scott may take into account is which of the three top candidates would have the best chance of being elected in 2018 and holding on to that position for the Republican Party.

On that score, you could go two ways: n Gruters, as former vice chair of the Republican Party and strong backer of Scott and Trump, has more name recognition and a wide base of potential supporters. n Neal, however, has the financial wherewithal to fund a statewide campaign.

“It would be transformational movement in my career,” Gruters told us. “My experience is the governor likes younger people.” (He is 39; Patronis is 45; Neal is 68.) But that he will pick someone he is close with.

He already knows who he wants.

After holding three public workshops regarding a parking garage project near St. Armands Circle — and the two years of discussion that preceded — city Parking Manager Mark Lyons is confident the plans will work out.

That’s not to say all the questions about the garage have been fully answered. At the most recent workshop, held June 8, some merchants and residents still showed ars of long signs of concern.

Some of the issues raised: How will the paid parking system that’s coming to St. Armands, along with the garage, work out?

Will employees really have to pay to park? Will the city properly maintain the proposed landscaping included with the project?

Lyons and other project team members tried to assure the public it would all work out, but at this point, skeptics might need to see that before they believe it. For the most part, though, he thinks St. Armands is behind the garage project.

June 8 meeting, he applauded the changes planners made.

“I think the project is much more respectful to the neighborhood than when we first started,” Snyder said.

Most of the concern at the workshop pertained to employee parking once a paid parking system is instituted around the Circle. Paid parking will begin once the garage is complete. Although some spaces will still be free, the majority — including those in the garage — will be pay-to-park.

The city approved the paid parking system to help fund the garage project, a compromise St. Armands landowners endorsed last year. But after the city started its $260,000 annual assessment on St. Armands Circle properties that will pay for the rest of the garage during the next 20 years, merchants have said they’re bearing an undue burden to get the parking structure built.

Lyons said St. Armands employees will be subject to the same parking permit program that’s in place downtown. The city charges $20 per month for an employee parking permit.

Although some merchants grumbled about the expense, Lyons said all users of the garage had to contribute to the funding of the project.

“It’s not an employee-only facility,” Lyons said. “As the use of this area and the draw continues, just like in downtown, we have to somehow offset those expenses — just like we do for the public.”

County grants give neighborhoods opportunity for improvement Groups of residents can apply for up to $10,000 to improve aspects of their community on the county’s dime.

It’s that time of year again — when residents generate an idea to better their community, rally together a group of volunteers and submit applications for a Neighborhood Initiative Grant.

In case you didn’t know that June is application month, don’t worry. There’s still a window of time to attend a workshop and

submit your application for one of the grants. This county-run program offers matching funds of up to $10,000 to groups (neighbors, homeowners associations, etc.) proposing projects to improve their communities.

Projects can range from a new sign at the front of a neighborhood, to environmental protection or disaster preparedness, to ways to showcase a community’s history.

“We have a lot of projects that are landscaping- or environment-based projects,” Neighborhood Services Manager Jane Grogg said. “They’re also hopefully working together, getting to know each other.”

But the parameters for what can be done with the grant are wide, as evidenced by the things Vickie Oldham has done with funding from the program.

After working on a project for the city of Sarasota to formally organize and document the history of the Newtown community, she wanted to take the information to the next level. Through funding from a Neighborhood Initiative Grant, Oldham was able to create a website to showcase the information she gathered.

“This is how you transform communities,” Oldham said.

“Why not a website? Why can’t we share the evolution of our community that people can access everywhere in the world?”

After receiving funding for the project in 2015, newtownalive.org was born to educate people about the area.

Not ready to stop there, Oldham applied for a grant the next year and received another to put on trolley tours and give riders an oral history of the community and its historical markers, led by local volunteers.

While Oldham’s projects are outside the box of what is typi-

cally proposed in the Neighborhood Initiative Grant Program, they meet the criteria set by the program’s five themes: character, leadership, safety, environment and health.

“I think it’s necessary that neighbors come together for specific causes,” Oldham said, even if that cause is as simple as adding streetlights to a dim part of town, or removing an invasive species of plant from an area.

The application process for a grant, which happens twice a year, takes seven months, and starts with attending a Neighborhood Grant Workshop to learn how to apply. The June 19 workshop is mandatory. After that, the deadline to submit intent to apply is July 10.

As part of the process, applicants must research and show how they’re going to raise matching funds for the amount they receive from the county, whether through actual dollars or volunteer hours.

Grogg said since the program began in 2002, 340 grants have been distributed, amounting to more than $1.8 million. In the previous fiscal year, $99,000 was available. The County Commission will consider allocating the same funding for the next fiscal year, beginning Oct. 1.

At the June 7 County Commission meeting, funding was approved for nine of 12 applicants from the previous cycle, amounting to more than $60,000.

Oldham recommends that everyone apply for a grant, and not to get discouraged by the possible dollar amount.

“Don’t look at it as small potatoes,” she said. “It can definitely be leveraged.”

BUST A MOVE 6:33 p.m. — 1300 block of Sixth Street Dispute: A man complained about his upstairs neighbors making a lot of noise throughout the day. An officer spoke to someone at the upstairs apartment, who said she had been helping her mother move into her new apartment and that she would be done in a few hours.

The officer told both parties to contact the apartment complex’s management if there were more problems.

FARE IS FAIR 2:46 a.m. — 2600 block of Second Street Dispute: A taxi driver called the police after a passenger did not

pay his fare. An officer made contact with the passenger, who was intoxicated and confused. Eventually, he agreed to pay the $25 fare, which satisfied the driver.

CHANGING PLACES 9:30 a.m. — 4200 block of Bay Shore Road Trespass: A homeowner reported there was a woman in her backyard, and she wanted an officer to issue a trespass warning to the woman. An officer made contact with the woman, who said she was looking for her sister’s home and forgot her sister moved and did not live there anymore. The officer issued the trespass warning to the woman. The woman left without incident.

11 a.m. — 1300 block of John Ringling Parkway Dispute: A woman decided to have an estate sale because she was moving into a smaller home. Her neighbor offered to conduct the sale for her. The woman said she and the neighbor had a verbal agreement regarding what would be sold and at what price. The woman asked him about a contract, and he told her “friends don’t need contracts.” She agreed to let him take care of it. The

woman and her husband went on vacation. When they returned, they found all the items in their house were gone and presumably sold. The woman believes her neighbor sold things for the wrong prices. When the neighbor gave her a check for the proceeds, it was written incorrectly, so she couldn’t cash it. The woman said she planned to contact her lawyer, but she wanted a police report documenting the incident. An officer told her the dispute was a civil matter because the two parties had a verbal agreement about the sale.

Boy Scout improves neighborhood park Residents wanted to make some changes to Fruitville Road Park.

Looking at Fruitville Road Park, at the northeast corner of Fruitville and Beneva roads, it’s hard to tell the 3.5-acre, tree-dotted tract is, well, a park.

This is a sore subject for residents in the area, who persuaded the city not to sell the land in 2015 and have advocated for improvements to the park since. It’s a large piece of green space, but there isn’t much that makes the park inviting.

In 2016, a group of five residents from the Glen Oaks Estates, Glen Oaks Manor, Glen Oaks Ridge and Fairway Oaks neighborhoods made a park improvements wish list. A name change, new signs and improved landscaping were among the items identified. The goal was to create a distinct identity for the park.

Around that same time, Devin Beede was searching for an Eagle Scout service project — the community improvement project that would allow him to attain the highest rank in the Boy Scouts of America. He reached out to city staff to see if they had any leads.

senior year at Sarasota High School, also runs cross-country and track. Based on that experience, he suggested improving a park. City staff got him in touch with the residents near Fruitville Road Park — the “Fruitville five” — and that group shared its to-do list with him.

He seized on a project he thought he could get done: adding benches to the park.

Norm Dumaine, a Glen Oaks Estates resident and one of the Fruitville five, was impressed by

Beede’s approach.

“Not all kids his age are good listeners,” Dumaine said. “He listens well, and he understands what the nature of a project is — what the pluses and minuses are.

He’s very receptive to learning.”

Beede and the Fruitville five worked together to model the right seating configuration for the park. Beede talked to residents about the design of the benches, reached out to a lumber company to provide supplies and oversaw the construction of the benches

alongside his fellow Boy Scouts.

The benches — 11 in total — were officially installed in the park in May. “You talk about dedication, imagination and intelligence — I could not sing his praises high enough,” Dumaine said.

What drives a teenager to spend his free time building benches for a neighborhood park? Beede said the prestige of attaining the Eagle Scout rank has motivated him.

“There’s a certain name and manner that’s tied to it that peo-

ple really admire,” Beede said.

After joining the Scouts in fourth grade, he acknowledges some moments when his commitment wavered. He said the passing of his grandfather gave him motivation to keep going.

“He was in Boy Scouts, and he was a big advocate,” Beede said.

“I thought, ‘That’d be a really nice thing to honor him with.’ ” For Beede, the Fruitville Road Park project was affirmation that his dedication paid off. The Fruitville five have no shortage of accolades for his work. The same goes for city staff. The knowledge that he’s making a difference is a real reward, Beede said.

“I really enjoy the fact that it’s something tangible, and it’s something that’s going to create a lasting impact,” he said.

Dumaine said Beede’s work will help in more than one way.

Adding the benches will create momentum for more changes, Dumaine hopes.

“He’s actually brought more attention to the park because of this project,” Dumaine said. “The city has become more involved in improving the park.”

Beede said he appreciates the positive attention, but he downplays the idea his work is uniquely deserving of attention.

“I’m very honored, but I’m not doing anything different than any other Eagle Scout’s done,” he said.

By this fall, he hopes to have formally obtained the rank of Eagle Scout. And residents hope long after that his work will be on display in a vibrant community park at Fruitville and Beneva.

Sarasota-area high school athletes have plenty to remember from 2016-17, but a few memories from the school year stand out.

he 2016-2017 high school season has ended. As spring turns to summer, it’s time to remember the best sports moments of the school year.

5. Riverview breaks through to playoffs The Riverview football program’s playoff drought was on the verge of becoming a teenager.

Instead, the Rams left the drought in the past, defeating Olympia 56-25 on Nov. 11.

Senior quarterback Mike Welcer ran for 137 yards and sophomore back Ali Boyce added 88.

A 40-yard Welcer run on the second half’s first possession acted as an exclamation point.

The Riverview defense forced Olympia quarterback Joe Milton, a four-star Michigan commit, into three interceptions.

The Rams lost in the next round, but the win over Olympia meant the world to the school.

4. Riverview reaches volleyball final four It wasn’t just the Rams football team finding postseason success.

The Riverview volleyball team did, too, and with confidence.

Then-Riverview volleyball coach Craig Wolfe even had T-shirts made before his team’s home district title match Oct. 20 against Newsome. A win would be the team’s first title since 2006.

The Rams’ confidence piled up over the course of the season, and this match exuded it.

Riverview junior Kayla Walker had 33 assists in the 3-1 victory, and her freshman sister Riah Walker finished with 20 kills.

The volleyball team advanced as far as the state semifinals.

3. Sailors rally to reach baseball semi The Sailors have been written about a lot, but proving doubters wrong is a big deal.

Sarasota won one-run games in both the Class 8A regional quarterfinals (1-0 against St. Petersburg) and semifinals (3-2 against East Lake, in eight innings).

Their 5-3 regional final win against Steinbrenner, the jewel of the season, was a comeback victory capped by senior Brooks Larson’s three-run homer.

A team’s coach can be crucial in tight situations like these, when poise is called for, and there’s a reason the Sailors’ Clyde Metcalf has won six state titles.

Metcalf himself would disagree with that. Asked why his team kept winning close games, he pointed to his chest: heart.

Sarasota made some mistakes in its 7-0 state semifinal loss to Hagerty, but its magical run will likely never be forgotten.

2. Torres wins high jump state title What’s harder than competing in the high jump state championships?

Doing it at night, in the rain.

Sarasota High junior Jaasiel Torres did just that and won his first state title, leaping 6 feet, 7

inches to clear the bar.

“I’ve jumped at night before, like once,” he said. “I’ve jumped in the rain once, but never in the rain at night. It was pretty cold when it was raining, so it was not a good combination.”

1. Riverview boys swim to 3rd title Not one. Not two. Three.

When the Riverview boys swim team won the Class 4A state championship on Nov. 5, the program became back-to-backto-back champions.

Seniors Keanan Dols, Austin Katz and Tyler Carmichael and sophomore Brett Riley took first place in the 200-yard medley relay (1:33), and Katz, Riley and juniors Brendan Firlie and Nicholas Hernandez-Tome also took first place in the 400-yard freestyle relay (3:05).

Dols took second place in the 100-yard backstroke (50.28) and the 200-yard individual medley (1:49). Firlie took silver in the 200- (1:39) and 500-freestyle (4:30).

The Rams medaled in eight events.

ne thing a lot of people, myself included, fail to consider is how athletes consistently perform at a high level.

Do they magically wake up ready to play? Of course not.

Rest and recovery is a big part of their success, as is what they put in their bodies.

To that end, healthy meals are vital. Sarasota’s Alyson Zild-

jian knows this, which is why she’s adding a new brand to her Zildjian Catering and Consulting company, which she started in 2006. It’s called Peak Performance Catering, and it, well, caters specifically to athletes.

Zildjian first started feeding Sarasota Crew four or five years ago, she said. She had friends with kids in the program, and they asked her to cater local regattas in which the Crew was participating. It was a hassle for parents to worry about food with so much else happening on race days. Zildjian agreed to take care of it and began researching

the types of foods rowers and all athletes need to be their best.

It had to include good fats and good carbs, Zildjian said. There had to be lots of protein. From there, Zildjian expanded to other rowing teams, including the Sarasota Scullers. The U.S. Men’s Rowing team even asked for her when it was in town for an event.

After that, things exploded.

“This past year, I took a look at what we’ve been doing and said, ‘You know, we really need to brand this and promote it,’ ” Zildjian said. “I’m passionate about feeding these teams nutritional meals.”

All of Zildjian’s ingredients are locally sourced and organic, so coaches know their athletes are getting top-quality food.

When I spoke to Zildjian on June 10, it was at the Hyatt Place Sarasota / Lakewood Ranch, while she prepared food for OKC Riversport, a rowing team from Oklahoma in town for the 2017 USRowing Youth National Championships.

The aromas emanating from the kitchen had me floating.

Zildjian had created a perfect mix of smells and flavors. Herb lemon chicken, the main dish, was served on a bed of Mediterranean rice pilaf. Green beans almondine were served as a side, with artisan rolls and butter.

OKC Riverside’s coach, Brian Ebke, confirmed the meal as “really good.”

“It’s hard to beat,” Ebke said.

“Some restaurants are of a similar quality, but they’re expensive. The fact that it’s healthy is a bonus. Everything is to make their lives as easy and convenient as possible, so all they have to worry about is the rowing.

For them to be able to come back with food delivered, it’s hot, it’s ready, it’s plentiful, it makes a big difference.”

Ebke also said the team’s original plan was to go to Olive Garden. No offense to the Garden (I really respect the unlimited soup, salad and breadsticks), but it pales in comparison to the package Zildjian is offering.

Peak Performance Catering works with more than just rowing teams, Zildjian said. She’s served basketball teams and pentathletes as well, and is looking forward to working with even more sports.

site and delivers it wherever the athletes are. Zildjian doesn’t do all this by herself. She has a staff helping her, the exact number of staff members varies with each job, but Zildjian oversees everything.

Of course, some teams make strange requests. Zildjian remembers the Venezuelan men’s basketball team wanting their heaviest meal for lunch, and a lighter meal at dinner.

That’s more in line with people’s eating schedules in their country. Some college teams will ask for breakfast at 11 a.m. Zildjian has to be ready for everything, and she sees her flexibility as a strength. It was put to the test when I spoke to her. Torrents of rain caused the day’s rowing events to end early. OKC Riversport, originally supposed to eat at 7 p.m., instead got back around 6:30 p.m. Zildjian anticipated the change, and had the food ready to go when team got to the hotel.

The brand may be just getting started, but Zildjian expects to focus heavily on it in the future.

She also would like to take it to other cities and teach caterers how to care for sports teams.

“It’s a goal of mine to feed all people this food, but especially the athletes,” Zildjian said. “It can make or break a race. If they’re comfortable and have good food, they’re going to feel better and perform better.”

Despite a change of venue from the parking lot to parking garage, the hospital hosted a carnival benefiting Southeastern Guide Dogs.

Selby campers look out for adventure

T

here was more than one happy camper June 13 at Marie Selby Botanical Gardens.

The gardens kicked off Camp Lookout this week, which introduces campers to art and nature. The camp, which runs through June 30, offers a different theme every week.

This week, campers got an up close and personal look at their seafaring neighbors. With nets and buckets in tow, children waded into Sarasota Bay on Tuesday morning to collect specimens.

They squealed with surprise as they pulled in crabs, shrimp and fish, quickly depositing them into a bucket to preserve their aquatic pals.

After about a half-hour of searching, the campers reluctantly waded back to shore to survey their finds.

t’s uncommon to watch a graduation ceremony during which the students fall to the floor at the call of a two-word command.

But then again, every graduating class shows its personality in unique ways.

At The Out-of-Door Academy’s Lower School Graduation on June 2 at Siesta Key Chapel, Head of Lower School Tanna Horner showed the fun-loving nature of the class of 2024 when, during a reflection on all of the trends of the past year, she shouted “Andy’s coming!” and all of the students fell to the floor, imitating the character Woody from “Toy Story” when he hears his owner Andy is coming

and he has to retreat to the state of a lifeless toy.

These lively students of the class of 2024 were celebrated by family, friends and faculty at the event, which began with a faculty and staff processional follwed by a processional of the 56 graduates.

Head of School David Mahler welcomed guests before the graduates took turns at the podium to tell the history of their class.

Afterward, graduate Nolan Naese gave his speech, “The Race,” then the class chorus performed “Happiness” and “The World is Ours.”
