Southside honors students’ memory There are quite a few additions to Southside Elementary School this year — some more obvious than others.

For months over the summer, anyone driving past the school on Osprey Avenue could see rolls of artificial turf ready for installation on the school’s playground. But another addition went up quietly, without much pomp and circumstance. A circular,

blue plaque was fixed to the wall behind Southside’s community garden, renaming it Southside’s Rainbow Garden in remembrance of Benjamin Gilkey and Avery Rann. Both died of cancer earlier this year — Gilkey, a third-grader and Rann, a first-grader.

As for Laura Gilkey, Benjamin Gilkey’s mother, the placement of the plaque could not have

been more apt. Gilkey helped establish the garden programs Southside enjoys, working with teachers and students while her son attended the school.

“That garden is special to me,” Gilkey said.

The addition was a welcome surprise to her.

“It was so sweet,” Gilkey said. “Now the kids that didn’t even know him will be connected to him.”

Both the Siesta Beach pavilion and Frontier Communications building on Siesta Key were vandalized the night of Aug. 11, and police said the incidents appeared to be connected.

The historic pavilion area of Siesta Beach — to the north, where the restrooms and snack bar are located — was sprayed with graffiti sometime between 11 p.m. and 4 a.m. on the night of Aug. 11, according to the police report.

According to police records, Frontier Communications, at 5600 Midnight Pass Road, was similarly vandalized.

Rally gathers in support of peace About 100 people came together Aug. 13 for a “vigil against hate” after a demonstration by white supremacists in Virginia.

On Saturday, Aug. 12, a white nationalist rally in Charlottesville, Va., brought thousands to the town. A car drove into a group of counter protesters, resulting in one death and 19 injuries.

The city wants to make U.S. 41 safer for pedestrians. Residents want to make it less congested. Is there a solution that can satisfy everyone’s needs?

C

utting through downtown Sarasota along the bayfront, U.S. 41 is a vital artery in the regional road network.

It alternates between four and six lanes, allowing drivers to bypass the dense urban core at 40 mph (if they happen to be following the speed limit). Its intersection with Gulfstream Avenue connects the mainland to the barrier islands of Bird Key, St. Armands Key, Lido Key and Longboat Key. As development continues west of U.S. 41, city officials face a challenging question: Can the state highway be tamed? Can the city reshape U.S. 41 as a pedestrian-friendly urban thoroughfare, designed in a way that doesn’t privilege drivers over walkers?

City Manager Tom Barwin thinks it’s crucial for making Sarasota a more livable city.

“Highly desirable, high-quality, vibrant urban communities — if they have one thing in common, it’s that they’re pedestrian friendly,” Barwin said.

But some people on the barrier islands are asking another question: Should the city radically redesign U.S. 41 for the benefit of pedestrians if it comes at the expense of moving cars effectively?

Residents advocated for three left turn lanes on Gulfstream Avenue, which would also require adding a third northbound lane on U.S. 41.

GOING VERTICAL

ROAD WARRIORS

On Monday, at a meeting at City Hall, the tensions between the competing interests — vehicles versus pedestrians — were on display. A group of Bird Key, St. Armands and Lido residents met with city administration to discuss the future of U.S. 41 between Gulfstream and Fruitville Road.

Two Bird Key residents, Lou Costa and Lou Dorff, encouraged the city to take an approach that acknowledged the significance of the U.S. 41-Gulfstream intersection as a link for people driving to and from the mainland. They pitched an idea they thought would help more cars move through the intersection, which would relieve the intense congestion that takes place during peak hours in high season.

If officials added a third left turn lane from eastbound Gulfstream onto northbound U.S. 41, Costa and Dorff believed the flow of traffic off the islands would improve significantly. To accommodate the change, the state would have to add a third northbound lane.

The barrier island residents recognized the city’s interest in making the road more pedestrian friendly, and advocated for a compromise solution that could achieve both goals. By adding a signalized pedestrian crosswalk at U.S. 41 and First Street, the city could give people another convenient opportunity to get across the highway. In conjunction with a decorative median barrier, it could also discourage jaywalking, which slows traffic.

“I feel like we have real potential for a solution that’s going to be a win-win for everyone,” Costa said.

But Barwin was skeptical of the benefits. He said adding room for

more cars on U.S. 41 would endanger pedestrians, and expecting drivers to effectively navigate the new traffic set-up would be dicey.

“We don’t want people staying at the Westin and Embassy Suites to be so intimidated with the size of the freeway that they’re adamant they have to get in their car to get around downtown Sarasota,” Barwin said.

He said the city is already taking steps to improve the traffic flow on U.S. 41. FDOT agreed to install a permanent right-turn

The state also agreed to install a median extending from Fruitville to Gulfstream, preventing cars from slowing traffic by making left turns or U-turns.

He also argued the congestion issues are limited to a relatively small window during the year.

Island residents bristled at the city manager’s response, arguing in-season traffic is a serious detriment to their quality of life.

“I didn’t move here to sit in traffic or calculate when I should leave my house to go shopping or go to the doctor,” said Roseanne Roble, president of the Bird Key Homeowners Association.

Mainland bayfront residents backed Barwin’s call for a more pedestrian-focused U.S. 41.

“We walk that all the time, and it’s scary,” said Paul Tschirhart, a resident of the Le Chateau condominium.

Those in attendance at Monday’s meeting — more than 30 in total, between residents and city staff — walked away with a tentative sense of compromise.

For now, the city will pursue and study its planned pedestrianfocused improvements to U.S. 41.

If those improvements don’t yield benefits for drivers, though, the city will revisit the idea of adding a third left-turn lane on Gulfstream, if only on a trial basis.

Costa suggested one metric that should trigger alarm for the city: traffic congestion that backs up into St. Armands Circle.

STATE OF DISARRAY

There is another wrinkle complicating matters, though. U.S. 41, Gulfsream and Fruitville all fall under the jurisdiction of the Flor-

ida Department of Transportation. Barwin said the state agency has historically been reluctant to design pedestrian-friendly roads.

He became more alarmed within the past 30 days, when he learned the state wasn’t undertaking the improvements to U.S. 41 city staff expected. The median on U.S. 41 has been reduced from 8 or 9 feet wide to 3 or 4 feet, Barwin said. This is concerning because pedestrians often cross the street between Fruitville and Gulfstream, using the median as a refuge as they make it halfway.

He said it appeared the state was designing the road to add a third northbound lane on U.S. 41.

“That is not wise,” Barwin said.

“It’s very dangerous, and it is contrary to what the city agreed to with FDOT.” Costa, however, remained optimistic that FDOT officials were willing to accommodate the city’s interests — albeit perhaps with a greater focus on vehicular traffic.

The city is still talking with FDOT officials to determine what, exactly, U.S. 41 will end up looking like. Traffic may be a top issue in the mind of some residents, but city leadership intends to keep pushing hard for a more walkable landscape.

“We are conveying to FDOT the reality of the increasing volume of pedestrian activity in that district,” Barwin said. “We have got to collaborate to bring the speeds down and enhance pedestrian safety.”

Some residents continue to advocate for a pedestrian overpass as a solution that would balance the needs of people in cars and on foot, but city staff says that’s not a realistic option for U.S. 41.

Steve Cover, the city’s planning director, said walkers generally opt against using the types of elevated pedestrian walkways the city has considered.

“I’ve never seen people use these,” Cover said. “If you have an option of crossing a street at ground level, human nature — typically, you say, ‘I’m not going to go up and across and down.’”

City Engineer Alex DavisShaw also said the city would need to acquire additional right-of-way to effectively build a pedestrian bridge, which could then cost around $5 million to construct.

Despite officials’ criticism, residents at a Monday meeting at City Hall continued to express interest in the idea — and encouraged RD. staff not to useFRUITVILLE cost as a deciding factor.

“How many of you want pickleball courts next to your homes?” asked Phyllis Rose, questioning the yacht club representatives there to present the plans.

“I didn’t move next door to a yacht club,” replied David Cohen, a yacht club board member and Bird Key resident who asserted the club’s right to build the courts despite neighbors’ objections.

ing property owners, ended with little resolution. Brian McCarthy, who’s representing the yacht club through the development-review process, said he intended to meet again with residents to try to make the pickleball plans more mutually acceptable.

At the same time, he acknowledged the highly charged atmosphere at last week’s workshop.

“I think that will be a productive use of our time — and maybe a quieter and more deliberative environment,” McCarthy said.

QUIET THE RACKET

The city workshop did occasionally veer into the dramatic. People in attendance characterized the game as a “hillbilly thing,” questioned whether increased traffic from the courts would endanger children playing in the street and asked if the yacht club felt it had the right to build amusement park rides on its property.

Overwhelmingly, though, residents’ concerns focused on one issue: noise. Near the beginning of the workshop, yacht club representative Brian Lichterman described pickleball as a “very quiet sport.” That drew laughs from the audience.

A paddle sport that blends elements of badminton, tennis and table tennis, pickleball is traditionally played with a hard ball and hard racket.

“The loudness of that sound is as loud as a baseball being hit out of the park — except it’s being hit constantly,” said Bird Key resident Al Bordenstein.

less than 40 feet from his property line.

This turmoil in Bird Key isn’t without precedent. As the sport has spiked in popularity across the country, residents living in close proximity to courts have complained about noise.

Bordenstein said he’s looked at similar disputes — typically between residents and homeowners’ associations — and determined that 300 feet is a fairly standard minimum accepted distance between homes and pickleball courts.

“Bird Key Yacht Club wants to put theirs within less than 100 feet of five houses, and within 200 feet of 20 or 30 houses,” Bordenstein said. “It’s egregious.”

Representatives for the yacht club said they’ll follow city setback and noise regulations.

They’ve measured the sound of the sport at around 50 decibels, quieter than the tennis courts already on the property. McCarthy said the yacht club would

strive to use quieter equipment — foam balls and padded paddles.

Residents were quick to point out that McCarthy did not commit to exclusively using that quieter equipment. McCarthy said he did not want to guarantee the club would use items that could become outdated or that a manufacturer would stop making.

Acknowledging the facts in question surrounding the noise the sport generates, McCarthy took a step back and reaffirmed a general belief it won’t be a nuisance for neighbors.

“Anybody can say anything,” McCarthy said. “Whether it’s tennis or pickleball, we think it’s a relatively quiet sport.”

SUBJECT TO APPROVAL

There are legal and procedural questions surrounding the pickleball plans, as well.

The land on which the yacht club plans to build the courts is technically two residential platted lots, as defined in the Bird

Key Homeowners Association adopted bylaws. Residents who oppose the project have argued the project needs approval from the association.

Cohen, however, outlined the yacht club’s argument that the property isn’t subject to the same requirements imposed on residential developments. When the yacht club received the land in question, it was given with the stipulation the land can be used for yacht club purposes.

Since 1981, the yacht club has used the property for a parking lot.

That required city approval, but not approval from the homeowners association, Cohen said. Since the club installed the parking lot, it has not received any claims that it would need approval from the homeowners association.

The project is subject to Planning Board and City Commission approval before it can move forward. Bordenstein did not outline how residents planned to contest the pickleball plans, but he indi-

cated there would be a strong, sustained opposition.

“Pretty soon, you’ll see what our firepower is,” Bordenstein said.

Neither residents nor the yacht club suggested they were intractable. Bordenstein suggested a meeting between residents and yacht club representatives to discuss landscaping and other sound-attenuation measures.

McCarthy said he was happy to entertain outside ideas.

“To the degree we can accommodate our neighbors, we would like to do so,” McCarthy said. “But we believe we have a right to use that property for yacht club purposes.”

Even after the workshop, McCarthy remained open to the idea of a brokered peace. He also addressed the realistic possibility that the dispute will linger.

“We hope we can work it out,” McCarthy said. “And if we can’t, it’ll be adjudicated.”

Sarasota County will experience a partial solar eclipse right as students across the district are being dismissed for the day.

Schools to cancel outdoor activities for solar eclipse Sarasota County Schools will be open as usual on Aug. 21, with some minor changes put in place for students’ safety.

It has been called a once-in-alifetime opportunity, but Aug. 21’s solar eclipse is posing a oncein-a-lifetime challenge for Sarasota County Schools.

Sarasota County will experience a partial eclipse. Although

the height of the eclipse will be visible around 2:50 p.m., it will be visible in stages between 1:15 p.m. and 4:15 p.m. — when district schools will dismiss students between 2:15 and 4:15 p.m.

Sarasota County Schools is “urging extra caution during dismissal time.” Absences from early dismissals will be excused on Aug. 21 if parents want their child home early.

Outdoor school activities like athletics, recess and physical education classes will move indoors between 1:15 and 4:15 p.m.

“There have been several incidents where people have had

damage to their eyes, even some who have been blinded,” said SCS Athletics Director James Slaton.

“I just don’t think as a district we want to take the chance that that could happen to even one student.”

There had been talk that Sarasota schools, as well as other districts, could consider going into a lockdown during the eclipse or shutting all schools early.

“We don’t have the ability to keep them in school later,” Superintendent Todd Bowden said at the Aug. 15 school board meeting. “We can just educate them ...

It’s certainly something that we believe has an education value to

our students, but it’s also an event that needs to be approached with an appropriate level of precaution.”

NASA says looking directly at the sun during a solar eclipse is dangerous except for when the sun is completely covered by the moon — which won’t happen in Sarasota County this time. The only way to view the eclipse is through eclipse glasses, which are available online and are far darker than regular sunglasses. It is also unsafe to view through a camera, binoculars or telescope.

At the same time as the district is taking precautions, some schools are using the eclipse as an educational opportunity. For schools and classes planning eclipse-related activities or projects, parents must sign permission slips before their student will be allowed to participate, and only pre-planned activities with the necessary approved safety eyewear will be permitted.

Fifth-graders at Tuttle Elementary School, for example, will be allowed to go outside to view the eclipse, with a signed permission slip, while all other students will watch a livestream indoors, according to Principal Tomas Dinverno.

“It’s a pretty amazing thing, and we want to be able to do it in the most safe way that’s also connected to their learning,” he said.

Pam Novak, a parent with students in sixth, third and first grades in Sarasota County Schools, said she’s excited about the educational opportunity.

“I’m excited as long as it’s safe,” Novak said. “I have confidence that the administrators and teachers will make a wise decision about how it can be carried out.”

ext Wednesday, the Sarasota County Commission has scheduled an entire day of public hearings for one topic. On the docket: TST Ventures LLC’s petition to rezone and approve special exceptions for 16 acres next to the Celery Fields east of Interstate 75 and just south of Fruitville Road.

Sarasota-based TST Ventures wants to rezone the property at Apex Road and Palmer Boulevard from “open use rural” to “industrial, light manufacturing and warehousing” to construct a recycling plant for construction debris and yard waste.

Now you know why the commission has scheduled an entire day for one topic.

Residents within a few miles’ radius of the proposed site are organized and mobilized to stop the rezoning. For obvious reasons.

An Aug. 1 email from the Save Our Celery Fields organization to its constituents noted: “The issues go beyond the obvious impacts on birds, birders, recreation, traffic, air quality, water quality, nearby communities, future potentials and eco-tourism.

Underlying all this is a question regarding the balance of public and private interests in land use.

“Sarasota County once had a reputation for discernment, forethought, taste and common sense. For the past three years, one man’s misguided proposal has been carefully proceeding through the paces of planning review when it never should have made it past square one.”

That one man is James Gabbert, owner of TST Ventures. Gabbert isn’t your ordinary waste recycling entrepreneur. He is a known player in the power circles of Republican Party of Sarasota County loyalists and activists. For one, he was elected in 2014 to the Sarasota County Charter Review Board. But he is better known in Republican circles as a contributor to local election campaigns.

Eight limited liability companies of which Gabbert is a manager or controlling manager have made contributions to three county commissioners’ 2014 election campaigns: Paul Caragiulo, John Moran and Alan Maio.

We’re not suggesting, shall we say, “collusion.” This is normal activity in local politics. Elected county officials essentially control the livelihoods of homebuilders and developers. So it

makes perfect sense for them to support the candidates whose philosophies and views toward development align with theirs.

But you know how it goes in Sarasota County. You can be sure lawyer and controlled-growth activist Dan Lobeck will be at the Aug. 23 hearings reminding the audience and commissioners that the man behind the petitioner is a financial supporter of three of the commissioners sitting on the dais.

Making approval of TST Ventures’ rezoning and special exception request more difficult for commissioners is the fact the Sarasota County Planning Commission voted unanimously in early June to reject TST Ventures’ proposals. The county planning staff also recommended against the rezoning and special exception petitions.

The planning board cited 13 “findings of fact” against the proposal’s rezoning petition (see adjacent text) and seven more “findings of fact” against the proposal’s request for special exceptions.

In its rejection of the request for the special exceptions, in addition to citing the same reasons as it did in the rezoning petition, the planning board also said: “The proposed use, singularly or in combination with other special exceptions, will be detrimental to the health, safety, morals, order, comfort, convenience or appearance of the neighborhood or other adjacent uses by reason of any one or more of the following: the number, area, location, height, orientation, intensity or relation to the neighborhood or other adjacent uses.”

In spite of these objections, TST Ventures in its petitions is proposing steps to mitigate its plant with more than double the amount of buffering, construction of berms and traffic enhancements.

Take a drive out to Sarasota’s Celery Fields east of the interstate early in the morning. Soak in the birders and others enjoying nature. You’ll ask yourself: Perhaps there is a need for a construction-waste recycling plant. And James Gabbert, owner of the 16 acres in question, has a right to put his property to better use. But surely, when you consider the future development of Sarasota County and this prime location, there is a better use for that property than a recycling dump.

PLANNING BOARD’S FINDINGS OF FACT The proposed change: 1. Would not be consistent with the intent, goals, objectives, policies, guiding principles and programs of the comprehensive plan; 2. Would not be compatible with the existing land-use pattern and designated future land uses; 3. Would have an impact on the availability of adequate public facilities consistent with the level of service standards adopted in the comprehensive plan, and as defined and implemented through the Sarasota County Concurrency Management System Regulations, Chapter 94, Article VII of Exhibit A of the Sarasota County Code, as amended; 4. The existing district boundaries are not logically drawn in relation to existing conditions on the property proposed for change; 5. Will adversely influence living conditions in the neighborhood; 6. Will create a drainage problem; 7. There are substantial reasons why the property cannot be used in accord with existing zoning; 8. It is not impossible to find other adequate sites in the county for the proposed use in districts already permitting such use; 9. Whether the gradual and ordered growth contemplated in the comprehensive plan can be best accomplished through the approval of a land use which is less intense than the intensity designated on the Future Land Use Map of the Comprehensive Plan; 10. Would create adverse impacts in the adjacent area or the county in general; 11. The subject parcel is not of adequate shape and size to accommodate the proposed change; 12. Ingress and egress to the subject parcel and internal circulation would adversely affect traffic flow, safety or control; and 13. Has been reviewed in accordance with the interposal agreement with the School Board of Sarasota County and whether school capacity has been adequately addressed, including on- and off-site improvements.

Manatee monument: Symbol of oppression or lesson of history?

Manatee County now finds itself in the politically correct maelstrom of Confederate monuments.

Those who can’t accept our nation’s history want the 1924 Daughters of the Confederacy memorial at the Manatee County Courthouse in downtown Bradenton removed.

Those opposed to the memorial say it stands as a symbol of and conveys the idea that Manatee County citizens embrace racism and oppression.

That is not true, of course — that Manatee citizens as a whole embrace those dark practices. And whether the monument stands as a symbol of racism and oppression is in the mind of the individual.

On the other side, many people believe you cannot, nor should you, rewrite or ignore history. That monument, for them, stands as a reminder of a time we should not forget. It has lessons every generation should be taught.

For sure, there is no right or wrong in this debate. You can believe what you want to believe. But the Manatee courthouse mon-

ument, as are all Confederate monuments, is becoming embroiled in the emotions of political correctness. And it’s a debate that is likely to spiral into an ugly cultural war.

Where does it stop? Should the Washington and Jefferson memorials in Washington, D.C., be razed because those two founders owned slaves?

This much we know to be wrong: No one has the right to deface, damage or destroy such monuments or statues as they did this week in Durham, N.C. They are vandals who should be punished.

If this issue is fomenting such intense and persistent community debates, local jurisdictions should take it to the citizens.

Let the people decide. Put a question — be it a charter amendment or straw vote — on the county ballot. Conduct a public debate and let the opponents and proponents make their case.

But what is the moral, psychological and public harm of monuments throughout the South reminding us of an epic time in our nation’s history, reminding us of the lessons we don’t want to repeat?

Given that Benderson bought land that contained a gas station and a trailer park, it really did not invest much. If an appraisal was done relative to that pre-existing use of the property, perhaps Benderson would accept that much money from the county, along with naming rights for the new park and parking lot.

And everyone would then know that Benderson really was a good corporate citizen with the best interests of the community always in mind.

Turtle season going swimmingly So far, nesting numbers are breaking last year’s record.

Its beach has not been nourished and remains natural, which turtles like, and it’s the most sparsely populated of the keys — fewer people mean darker, quieter beaches with fewer obstacles. Turtles also like to return to the same place they’re born to nest, making the Key popular every year.

It’s the middle of turtle nesting season, and so far, things are going well, authorities say.

There are enough nests to rival last year’s record-breaking numbers. The number of false crawls is down more than 30% — and it can likely be attributed to conservation efforts over the past 30 years, Mote scientists say.

“We’ve started seeing the increase just in the past several years, and our program and programs similar to ours have been around about 30 years,” said Melissa Bernhard, a staff biologist at Mote Marine Laboratory & Aquarium. “It takes turtles about 25 to 30 years to mature, so if conservation efforts that were started 35 years ago were starting to reap the benefits now, it makes sense now that they’ve grown up.”

Turtles, which are choosy when deciding when and where to dig nests, are spooked by any number of factors, including bright lights, movement nearby or furniture on the beach. Any time a turtle comes out of the ocean to make a nest, but instead turns around and retreats to the ocean is called a “false crawl.”

false crawls increased. Bernhard said turtles will false crawl about 50% of the time, which the 2017 numbers reflect. But last year, they were false crawling at a 3-to1 or 4-to-1 ratio.

The more typical numbers this year could be because the sand has “evened itself out,” she said, which usually takes about a season.

“I personally think that we don’t know enough about what’s good or bad about the natural beaches to be changing them and saying they’re still good,” Bernhard said.

Despite the beach nourishment, Sarasota County has the highest number of turtle nests for Florida’s Gulf Coast. As of Aug. 12, Longboat Key was home to

1,251 nests, Lido Beach was home to 179 and Siesta Key was home to 629. At this time in 2016, Longboat Key had 1,154, Lido Beach had 164 and Siesta Key had 443 nests.

Nests of the rare green sea turtle are more numerous than last year, too. As of Aug. 12, Longboat Key had 18 green nests and Siesta Key had three. At this point last year, both Longboat Key and Siesta Key had zero. The green sea turtles nest counts go up and down each year, and with 72 more nests in Mote’s area than at this time in 2016, 2017 is an up year.

Even at their highest, Sarasotaarea beach numbers pale in comparison to the number of nests on Florida’s east coast.

To keep turtle nesting numbers going in the right direction, Mote recommends people encourage nesting by being quiet and not approaching turtles if they see them; avoiding using flashlights on the beach at night and shielding lights from homes that could confuse the animals; filling in holes in which hatchling turtles could fall; and removing furniture from the beach.

as part of a family, and we treat them with the respect that family members do,” Robinson said.

“And I think having that mutual respect of each other and I think having that family feel really does help us all work together and bring vets from their unfortunate position to one where they’re going to again feel important, feel they belong and give them a future.”

Hannon, himself a veteran, says that’s why he wanted to partner with Goodwill.

“Having the opportunity to help fellow veterans that have kind of stumbled off the path and need a little pick-me-up to get back on that path was a huge part,” he said.

After Stouffer was hired by Signal 88, he quit his job at WinnDixie and began providing security at events, construction sites and condominiums. He’s so vested in the company, he recently changed his college major from psychology to anti-terrorism, and plans to stay with the company indefinitely to help it grow.

“I think without [these services], the vets are lost,” Robinson said of the company’s partnership with Goodwill. “They’ve served their country, they’ve been out there, they’ve seen it, they’ve done it, they come back here and they’re lost. So I think the importance of these services is really, it’s immeasurable. It’s something that you can’t qualify … maybe you don’t get them all employment, but you get them a sense of purpose.”

Stouffer agrees. Without getting involved in Goodwill Veterans Services and meeting Hannon and Robinson, he said he’d probably still be at Winn-Dixie.

“It’s given me a purpose again,” he said.

Steven Stouffer, a decorated veteran who worked for the FBI and as a private detective after eight years in the U.S. Marine Corps, was working at Winn-Dixie when Brian Hannon met him.

Stouffer moved to Florida from Pennsylvania to help care for his sick parents. But when they both

died, things only got tougher for the veteran. That is, until he got involved with Goodwill Veterans Services and met Signal 88 Security of Sarasota franchisee Tim Robinson and Hannon, the company’s operations manager.

“The true thing is I got lost,” Stouffer said, which included being homeless for a period of time. “I was stuck, just putting baked beans on a shelf basically.

But when Stouffer found out about Goodwill Veterans Services of Manasota, things started to change.

“When you’re in the military, you’re trained to basically be this unstoppable force, that nothing stops you, that you can be basically anything you put your mind to,” said Mike Marzella, Goodwill Veteran Services coordinator, a veteran himself. “Sometimes veterans just need a hand up from us to get back on that track.”

A caseworker helped Stouffer receive counseling for posttraumatic stress disorder and get back into college classes, which he had stopped taking. At a Goodwill interview event, he met with Hannon, who hired him as a security guard on the spot.

“When Mr. Hannon met me, he looked me straight in the eyes and said ‘Nah, that’s it, you’re done.

That’s just not you,’” Stouffer said. “First thing after they employed me, Mr. Hannon said, ‘You have a family now. You’re part of a team.’ And that’s important, coming from the military — that confidence knowing that they have your back and you have theirs.”

This is part of Hannon and Robinson’s ongoing effort to hire veterans. So far, they’ve hired about eight out of their partnership with Goodwill.

IN WITH THE OLD Booker football coach wants to make the program’s former glory new again.

T

ypically, high school football training camps are about the new.

New players, new coaches, new schemes, new uniforms and a newfound confidence are among the expected talking points. Booker High has some of those new things, too, with a distinctly old-school flavor.

That’s by design. Dumaka Atkins is entering his second season as coach but his first full one as the man in charge. When he took over for Recharde Goodwyn last season, he didn’t have much time to make changes, but even then made it a point to talk about turning his players into “Booker guys.” Guys who give 100% for the school, not just on the field, but off it as well. Guys who help the people around them, and guys who find success no matter where their athletic careers may lead.

Atkins used the offseason to start implementing his plan. He started by bringing in his brother, Baraka Atkins, a former draft pick of the Seattle Seahawks, to help coach the defense, but he didn’t stop there. Every coach on staff has some connection to Atkins’ past, whether it’s by blood or by circumstance, like assistant Fred Gilmore, who coached the Tornadoes when Atkins played.

The staff wants to bring back

the glory days of Booker football, when the team was feared. The program’s peak was actually two seasons after Atkins graduated, when it reached the 2005 Class 3A title game against St. Augustine High, but Atkins was part of the turnaround, winning the school’s first district title under Gilmore in 2003.

The coaching staff’s plan to accomplish this isn’t complex.

“We have to hit people in the mouth,” Atkins said.

Atkins said he’s more comfortable in the head coaching role with this group of men around him, and it shows. Last season, he would watch drills in practice with hands on his knees, mainly saving his instruction for the offensive linemen, for that’s his area of experience. This season, he still watches with a laser-like gaze, but he’s more active, helping to “rush the passer” during offensive drills and yelling at all position groups equally.

Even on the field, what is new carries a hint of familiarity. Last year’s starting quarterback, Arthur Brantley, transferred to Riverview High, and taking his place will be University of South Florida verbal commit Talik Keaton, who has made a name for himself — at wide receiver, outside of a few random snaps at quarterback in the wildcat formation.

Keaton said he feels comfortable in the offense, and looked the part of a quarterback at practice on Aug. 15, running option plays without any mistimed handoffs or inaccurate pitches. He also displayed his strong arm, which he credits to playing centerfield in baseball for several years.

In the spring, Atkins said Keaton would need to rely on his raw talent while behind center, but sounded more confident in his quarterback now that training camp is underway.

“He’s going to surprise some people, with his legs and with his arm. Depending on what the defense gives us, that’ll dictate how he picks them apart,” he said.

Keaton won’t have to do it alone. Senior Jermaine Zeigler will be a primary target, as will senior Anthony Thomas, who is also a mainstay of the Tornadoes’ defensive secondary.

The Tornadoes were 4-6 last season, and lost their starting quarterback. That’s not a combination that often leads to a quick turnaround, but there have been cases of it happening, even at Booker. The year before the Tornadoes’ state title game appearance, the program went 3-7.

If anyone can return the school to its former glory, it’s the group of men at the helm. That’s good, because they only have one goal in mind.

“Winning, and not only on Friday nights,” Atkins said. “A lot of the winning takes place in the offseason ... in the classroom ... (and) in the community. We are trying to get to that.”

Now there’s a story. Last year, I had messed up against Bayshore High. We beat them, but I had dropped a pass, and because I usually don’t drop anything, everyone was like, “Whoa, you dropped a pass!” They were playing around with me. I said, “I’m going to show you all something next game.” The next week, I came back and scored three touchdowns with 180 (receiving) yards.

On top of the world Dean becomes first U.S. rower in 50 years to win the single scull race at World Juniors.

A

t the 2016 World Rowing Junior Championships in the Netherlands, Clark Dean watched a few races next to John Luby, the U.S. men’s single scull representative at those games.

Dean, then a Pine View School junior, told Luby, now at Harvard University, he was considering competing in the single scull event at the 2017 games. Luby advised him against it — hard.

Americans don’t win that event, he told Dean. Luby finished sixth in the event’s “B” final himself.

He was almost right. No American had won the event in 50 years, when Jim Dietz won it at the first-ever iteration of the junior championships in Ratzeburg, Germany. Either way, it was not an event that favored Americans, who tend to do better in the bigger boat events.

That didn’t deter Dean. In fact, it made him want it more.

“I’m going to go win it,” he told Luby.

On Aug. 6, he fulfilled his promise.

Crossing the finish line at the 2017 championships in Trakai, Lithuania, Dean felt relief more than anything, he said. He finished in 7:04.73, more than 3 seconds faster than second-

place finisher Mortiz Wolff of Germany. Dean never trailed in the race, and was actually less nervous about the final than the event’s first heat. He had never really rowed the single competitively until a Philadelphia regatta in May, which he won. That gave him confidence that he could at least hold his own in the event, he said. The more he raced it, the more confident he felt.

Still, Dean was restless lining up for the championships’ first heat. As it turned out, the top three qualifiers in the heat were the top three finishers in the final, in the same order.

He’s proud to be a part of America’s changing rowing culture. The U.S. is still dominant at big boats, and for good reason: Most colleges only participate in the men’s and women’s eight, Dean said, with some expanding to add a coxed four.

“It’s a trickle-down effect,” Dean said. “Most high school programs only focus on those events because colleges do.”

Dean’s rowing program, Sarasota Crew, isn’t one of them, but the prevalence of sweep events, which use one oar per person, causes an unbalanced talent pool, leaving the sculling side, which uses two oars per person, near empty. That’s why Dean decided to take up the single scull. It’s where his talents were best put to use. Now, by bringing home the gold, he hopes to convince rowers that sculling isn’t

so bad. For the U.S. to strengthen its claim as a rowing power, they’ll need to listen to him.

(An aside: For water sports, can we all agree to change the phrase to “one-trick sea horse”?) He “double raced” at the champi-

onships, competing in the men’s coxed four and finishing sixth, a rare feat in itself. Most rowers don’t have the energy to row six races in four days, but Dean did, and with gusto.

Dean isn’t sure what he’s going to do next. He’s taking official

visits in September to the University of California-Berkeley, Harvard University and the rest of the big rowing schools. His decision might be decided by which school offers him the most scholarship money. He’s also not looking too far into the future.

There was no mention of the big “O” word during our chat, though by the look on his face I could tell we were both thinking about it. Instead, he’s deciding between participating in the World Juniors again next year, as he’ll still be eligible, and moving to the U23 championships. If he decides to advance, he’ll have the memories from these juniors, including two correspondences he didn’t expect.

As he waited to get drug tested following his gold medal win, Dean received a call from a number he did not recognize.

He answered anyway. It was Jim Dietz, the first U.S. single scull champion calling to say congratulations to the second. That was a cool moment, Dean said.

A cooler one? A few days after returning from the championships, Dean received a message from John Lamby. You remember, the guy who told Dean not to try the race?

Yeah, that guy. He gave Dean congratulations as well, and admitted to being as wrong as you can be.

Dean could only laugh, and say thanks.

Back to school Sarasota public schools welcomed back students Aug. 14.

ilence was met with salutations Aug. 14 at public schools throughout Sarasota County.

The previously quiet halls of Southside Elementary School were filled with pattering footsteps and the encouraging words of parents as they dropped their children off for their first day at school.

At Bay Haven Elementary School, kindergartner Anna Blake experienced the first of many first days still to come.

She said she is most excited to learn new subjects, though she isn’t quite settled on which subject she is most interested in.

“Letters, shapes — I don’t know,” she said.

But even for incoming fifthgraders, who will go on to middle school next August, the excitement was the same.

They posed for pictures, hugged their parents and walked through the front door, ready to begin their year.

The Pines toasts its centenarians Pines of Sarasota Rehabilitation & Senior Care Community held its seventh annual Centenarian Tea on Aug. 11.

The Centenarian Club at the Pines of Sarasota maintains a level of local celebrity among its residents.

For seven years, residents and staff have taken time to recognize those who have reached one of life’s elusive mile markers — the 100th birthday.

But this year, the 12 inductees — all women — got their moment of national celebrity.

“This is extra special this year because of what the ladies are going to receive,” Pines of Sarasota President and CEO John Overton said. “They have given us so much.”

The honorees of the Pines’ Centenarian Club knew what to expect ahead of the Centenarian Tea on Aug. 11. The program called for a performance from the onsite preschool, appearances from local dignitaries such as City Commissioner Willie Shaw and, of course, cake.

However, there was a surprise waiting for them at each of their place settings.

The Pines of Sarasota honored 12 of its residents who are 100 years old or older. Right: Each centenarian received a custom jam jar. The women will be honored by the “Today Show” in its 100th birthday segment.

A personalized container of Smucker’s jam sat in front of each woman’s name plate — a souvenir of the recognition to come.

The 12 women will be recognized on the NBC’s “Today Show” during the 100th birthday segment. The Pines is still waiting to hear on which day the women will be honored.

“That was a big surprise,” Director of Activities Sandy De Lenferna said.

Other than this year’s latest addition, the event went on as usual. De Lenferna applauded the women’s more than 1,200 years of collective life experience as business owners, performers, teachers, wives and mothers.

“The only thing missing is … the guys,” Overton joked.

The tea has been a traditionally female affair in its seven-year history. Although Overton has hopes that one male resident will be added into the club next year, he’s confident that regardless of its makeup, the spirit of the club will remain the same — a celebration of a life well lived.

“As of right now it’s all about being able to celebrate the ladies,” he said.

nother name has joined the list of downtown developments.

Stakeholders and city staff gathered Aug. 9 near the corner of Lemon Avenue and State Street to break ground on The Mark, slated to open June 2019.

“It’s been a long process to get us where we are today,” said Bob Vail, president of Kolter Urban, the project’s developer.

“It didn’t just happen overnight, obviously.”

Kolter Urban bought the property in 2015 with plans to create a mixed-use property to complement the existing commercial corridor. The 12-level, 153-foot tall building includes 157 residential units, 35,000 square feet of ground-floor retail space, parking and 11,000 square feet of office space.

“We took the old design and with the city’s help we went in and tried to figure out what we could do within the zoning regu-

lations,” Vail said. “We knew before we bought what we wanted to do, it just took a year and half to draw it and bring it back.”

Now with plans and permits in hand, there was only one thing left for Vail to tell guests before breaking ground on the project.
