Newtown honors its nurse Gwendolyn Atkins, 81, of Sarasota died Aug. 5. She is remembered as Newtown’s nurse and worked to advocate for the health of her community. She worked for the Sarasota County Health Department and served the Newtown community, sometimes walking door to door, when Sarasota Memorial Hospital was inaccessible to its residents. A memorial service was held Aug. 12 at Light of the World International Church.
