Lido pool remains closed after lightning strike

The public pool at Lido Beach is closed in the wake of a lightning strike.

On July 20, lightning struck the electrical panel that controls the pool’s pumps and chemical levels, prompting the closure.

Judy Soenneker, the city’s parks and recreation administrative supervisor, said staff is working to get a replacement panel from a manufacturer in California. If all goes according to plan, Soenneker said the pool could reopen as soon as Saturday.

Readers offer solutions for Siesta parking Last week, we published a story examining five possible solutions to parking problems on Siesta Key. They included a new parking lot on the Key, a new parking lot off the Key, charging for public parking on the Key, private parking lots and a parking garage.

The parking shortage on the island is a source of frustration for many of our readers, some of whom had their own ideas on how to address the problem. Here are some different proposals you shared online, including some that weren’t mentioned in our original article.

Man stabbed on Siesta Key, deputies say Deputies arrested a man July 20 for stabbing someone outside of the Beach Club on Siesta Key after an argument, according to the Sarasota County Sheriff’s Office.

The argument over a spilled drink occurred between the victim and two men inside the club. Later that night, shortly after 2 a.m., one of the men confronted the victim in the parking lot, where police say he was stabbed in the back.

Police later arrested 24-year-old Andreas Leonardo Montilla-Monsalve and charged him with aggravated battery with a deadly weapon.

While a vocal majority are worried about the show’s potential impact on the Key, a strong few have compelling arguments in favor of it.

iesta Key is getting its very own self-titled reality show, in the same vein as the early 2000s hits “Laguna Beach” or “The Hills,” but residents have been vocal about concerns over the show.

The critics have come out in force on social media. More than 100 people responded to the news on The Observer’s Facebook page, most of which were concerned with the amount and type of attention a show on a national network would bring to the island.

One commenter, Daniel Zuknick, 44, has lived in the area for more than 40 years. He works at a resort on the Key, and is concerned about both young partyers coming to the area after watching the show, and an influx of any visitors to the Key in general.

“I know what this town once had,” he said. “The quality of the environment on the island has completely changed, as far as the quality of people that are coming here.”

He added that while visitors

keep food on his table, his concern about “the caliber of people” is the price residents pay for reality shows and a No. 1 ranked beach.

“It’s wonderful for tourism, but at what point does it become too much of a good thing?” Zuknick asked.

On the opposite side of the divide is Jules Lewis Gibson, the 48-year-old president of Fuse Media who has lived in the area for six years. Considering Siesta’s popularity as a tourist destination, she doesn’t believe a reality show will draw an inordinate number of visitors.

“I think the secret is out.”

She thinks the show isn’t likely to generate as much buzz as some fear, but if it does, it will be positive.

“I’m all for bringing a kind of younger, fresher perspective to Sarasota in general,” she said, noting the show isn’t aimed at the area’s typical tourist market. “I think it can be nothing but good.”

That’s a view that Jeanne Corcoran, director of the Sarasota County Film and Entertainment Office, shares. Corcoran and her office have been coordinating with the show off and on for sev-

eral years, and now that it’s almost here, she said it has already been good for the area.

“They’ve spent many, many hundreds of thousands of dollars directly into the local economy,” she said.

Corcoran said the show filming in Siesta Key brought “high wage, high skill” jobs to the area and brought customers to hotels and merchants — not to mention all the free product placement the show is giving the Key. “Any time the face of your community is seen in media that people watch, you’re getting exposure that generates curiosity, generates interest, and sometimes it just plants a subconscious idea in a viewer’s mind they may not even be aware of,” Corcoran said.

Ultimately, Corcoran said the show will draw new visitors to the Key, which is exactly what some residents fear. But Visit Sarasota County President Virginia Haley said the hype around the show won’t necessarily translate to visitors, especially considering the younger audience the show is geared toward.

“We’re not an inexpensive destination, and that is oftentimes a

challenge for a younger demographic,” she said. “Not all, but it is sometimes a challenge, particularly if you want to stay out on Siesta Key. “From our end, we’ve always positioned Siesta as a great family destination and we’ll continue to do so.”

Cast members responding to the criticism from locals ultimately encouraged them to wait.

“Whenever you tell somebody you’re going to be part of a reality TV show, all they think is it’s going to be trash,” said cast member Brandon Gomes, 22. “But I just keep trying to tell them to wait until it airs. It’s going to be classy.”

Corcoran agreed, adding that crews had followed every rule and regulation and had a low impact on the environment in which they were filming. She had some advice for the show’s vocal dissenters: “If they don’t like it, they don’t have to watch,” she said.

“The audience is the end judge of everything that’s out there.”

Search for Siesta Village maintenance contractor stalls

The county’s maintenance contract for Siesta Key Village ends Aug. 26, and staff has not identified a new service provider.

The Siesta Key Village is in need of a new contractor to manage landscaping and maintenance services in the commercial district, but the county is having difficulty finding a company that can do the job.

Two service providers attended a mandatory site visit on June 19 at the beginning of the bidding process for a new vendor, but by late July, the bid was closed and the county had no applicants.

With the county’s current contract with Buccaneer Landscape Management Inc. ending Aug. 26, former Siesta Key Village Association President Wendall Jacobsen is worried.

“I am concerned that we don’t have a bid, that no one is bidding on the contract,” said Jacobsen, general manager of Beach Bazaar in the Village. “And the last couple years, we have been getting pretty good service with the help of the

Helen Reed, a senior procurement analyst for the county, said the two interested companies would have been unable to complete the work needed.

“The feedback we got from them is that it was beyond their ability to fulfill the scope of service,” she said. “It is a pretty broad spectrum. It’s not just one type of work.”

According to the invitation for bids published last month, the county was looking for “a supplier to provide property maintenance and environmental landscaping services of streetscapes, landscapes, hardscapes, and other improvements to the area in the Siesta Key Village.”

Jacobsen said the contractor and the county have done a great job “helping the Village look like a resort-style village, like it should look like.”

Reed was unable to say why Buccaneer won’t be renewing its contract. The company, which to date has been paid $326,000 for its services since August 2014, couldn’t be reached for comment. Jacobsen said the contractor before Buccaneer also didn’t renew when its contract ended.

Reed was unable to say what steps the county might take to find a contractor moving forward.

Bird Key residents pan pickleball plans The Bird Key Yacht Club wants to install pickleball courts, but residents say the proposal will disrupt the neighborhood.

Bird Key Yacht Club officials knew neighboring residents were concerned about the club’s plans to install six pickleball courts on

its property, so they decided to show them the sport was quieter than they feared.

Earlier this year, the club invited residents to a demonstration to hear for themselves. The club planned to use quieter balls than the pickleball standard. The goal, the club said, was to make sure the courts didn’t impede on the lives of people living around them.

Brian McCarthy, who’s representing the yacht club as the pickleball courts go through the city development review process, thought the results of the demon-

stration were conclusive.

“Nothing like getting out and hearing it to convince people it is a relatively quiet sport,” he said.

Except many Bird Key residents aren’t convinced.

The city has scheduled a workshop Aug. 8 to discuss the project. But already, resident Al Bordenstein said, 32 homeowners in the neighborhood have signed a petition opposing the pickleball courts. The sound remains a concern, with some residents skeptical the club can force players to use the quieter ball.

For those unfamiliar with the sport, pickleball is a paddle game that combines elements of tennis, table tennis and badminton.

The USA Pickleball Association touts the sport as one of the fastest growing in the country. The potential for widespread interest outside of Bird Key is one of the reasons residents are decrying the proposed pickleball courts.

Bill McNulty, another Bird Key resident opposed to the plans, says homeowners aren’t being unreasonable. He’s found evidence online of neighborhood disputes tied to pickleball courts.

A 2010 Wall Street Journal article describes a spate of clashes within communities sparked by newly installed pickleball courts — partially because of noise the sport generates.

The issues aren’t limited to the sound of the ball, McNulty said. The players themselves can be raucous. The courts would replace 18 parking spaces on the yacht club property, which could lead to more visitors parking on the street.

“Every single one of my neighbors that I’ve spoken with is vehemently opposed,” McNulty said. “Some have already engaged attorneys.”

The city must approve a major conditional use permit for the yacht club to proceed with the pickleball project. In an otherwise residential neighborhood, McNulty doesn’t see a reason the plans should move forward.

“Once the pickleball goes through, that nuisance is there, seven days a week, 365 days a year,” McNulty said. “We’re being asked to make an accommodation for nonresidents that we wouldn’t ever make for residents.”

She thinks the club is prioritizing its own interests without concern for how it will affect the rest of Bird Key. She, too, fears the city will judge the application by a different standard.

“It just doesn’t seem fair,” Rose said.

McCarthy said few proposed developments get unanimous support and reiterated his belief that the pickleball courts will be quiet — quieter than the tennis courts that already exist at the yacht club.

“Right across our street are multimillion dollar homes, and we’ve never received a complaint,” McCarthy said.

Despite the club’s efforts, it’s unlikely residents will be convinced the pickleball courts won’t be disruptive.

“We want the yacht club to succeed,” McNulty said. “But first, do no harm.”

In late June and early July, San Remo Estates residents reached out to city officials with an urgent message: The neighborhood is suffering from a crime epidemic.

Those residents had concerns about the response time to incidents in the past month, which included a stolen vehicle and two attempted break-ins. They called on city leaders to add officers to the Sarasota Police Department

and asked for relief from what they described as a dire situation.

“Far from the idyllic life we envisioned, we are living in a state of alert one might experience in a war zone!” San Remo resident Ellen Foster wrote in an email.

San Remo Estates is a 67-home neighborhood on the water near the north Siesta Key bridge. So far this year, police have recorded seven property crimes in the neighborhood. That’s an increase over the two reported last year.

dette DiPino says the community is relatively safe, but understands the significance of the concerns residents have expressed.

“If it’s your stuff that’s taken, you feel very serious about it,” DiPino said.

She said the crimes in San Remo have mostly been opportunistic.

When someone’s car was stolen, the owner left the keys in the car.

When thieves broke into other cars, the doors were unlocked.

DiPino said the victims should not feel they were responsible for those crimes, but she encouraged residents to take simple steps to prevent similar incidents.

“I take it as a compliment that people feel so safe in Sarasota that they feel like they don’t need to lock their doors,” DiPino said.

“But there are some people that are criminals in our community, and they take advantage of opportunities.”

In San Remo, the Police Department is working with residents to devise a plan to address the increase in criminal activity. In addition to patrol strategies, which DiPino declined to discuss in detail, the police chief said it helps when people living in a community are vigilant about

reporting suspicious behavior.

“Please, contact us,” DiPino said. “Call 911, or me or whoever, and relay your observations and concerns.”

Scott Schecter, president of the San Remo Estate Association, said residents already have good lines of communication with one another. They felt compelled to broaden their message now because they believed it could inspire city leaders to take action.

“People want to do what’s best for the community — for not only San Remo, but the neighborhoods around us,” Schecter said.

Schecter and other residents have concerns about the staffing level of the Police Department. At its peak in 2007, the department’s budget called for 204 sworn officers. In the 2017-18 budget presented to the City Commission, that number was 169.

Although the department did propose adding four officers in that budget, DiPino is also focused on addressing problems with the resources available. That includes relying on residents to educate themselves about crime prevention and even organize neighborhood watch groups, which San Remo is doing.

Schecter said officials were surprised to hear of the issues, but are willing to help. He said the neighborhood has started reporting any suspicious activity to the police, per DiPino’s instructions.

He’s hopeful that, with city leaders aware of residents’ concerns, everyone will do what it takes to target criminal activity.

“I’m confident, over time, that people will understand that San Remo and other Sarasota neighborhoods — they’re bad neighborhoods for people attempting to commit crimes,” Schecter said.

Sarasota sees decrease in robberies and burglaries But if you’re still worried, here’s how to protect yourself.

As summer drags on in Sarasota County, some residents are getting heated over perceived “crime epidemics,” like in San Remo Estates.

Despite the uptick of property crimes in that neighborhood, the crime rate across the country is trending down.

Around the same time San Remo residents noticed a problem, the story of a Sarasota man wielding a machete to fend off would-be robbers went viral in June, when it surpassed local media and appeared on news outlets across the country, including the Washington Post.

The Observer took a close look at burglaries and robberies in the area, and found that despite these high-profile and close-to-home incidents, Sarasota County has been faring well in terms of local crime, and there are a number of ways to protect your property.

Scott said it’s rare to see a home invasion, and it’s a more serious crime. He said he sees a couple a year. They typically happen when a suspect knows the victim and are often drug-related.

The Sarasota Police Department reported 1.6 robberies per 1,000 people. In both the county and the city, the number of robberies has been trending down over the past five years.

The same downward trend applies to burglaries in 2016, though numbers are higher for that type of crime. The Sheriff’s Office reported 3.1 burglaries for every 1,000 people, and the Sarasota Police Department reported 5.8.

“I’d like to take credit for that,” Scott joked, before adding crime in general is down. He attributes it to the improved economy.

In the county, the drop in robberies and burglaries could also be thanks to Sheriff Tom Knight’s emphasis on tactical units that target specific people or groups committing crimes repeatedly — what Scott called “prolific” offenders. “[Ideally] if you could get these one or two bad guys off the street, your numbers would go down,” Scott said. “And that’s what happened.”

At a June County Commission meeting, Knight announced he didn’t plan to add any staff members in the next fiscal year, and in part attributed that to this focused crime prevention plan.

“We don’t want to cast a net out to arrest a lot of people,” he told commissioners. “We want to arrest the right people.”

cars, Scott said. And there are a number of preventive measures individuals can take to protect themselves and their belongings.

For property in your car, the simple steps of locking the doors and removing any valuables from the car can go a long way.

Scott said typically, if someone is going to try to rob or burglarize a home, they will knock on the door first. This will tell them if anyone is home, and give them a chance to look around to see what challenges there might be to getting in. If someone answers, they’ll make up an excuse and leave. If they get no response, they might try to walk around to the back of the home and enter it.

“If there’s something suspicious — somebody walking between yards, trying the door handles to your car or home — that definitely ramps it up to the next level,” Scott said. That’s when you should call police.

Often, Scott said, children are likely to call their parents first.

But if something is really suspicious, it’s best to contact police as soon as possible.

“Some people are nervous to call the police, but that’s what we’re here for,” he said.

Other prevention tips include having a good relationship with your neighbors, keeping your garage doors closed and your hedges trimmed and having good lighting on your property. Also, it can be helpful to install an alarm system or hire a company to keep an eye on your home while you’re away.

PAY TO PARK AT THE BEACH That sounds like heresy, but it’s the best policy to solve a problem and preserve the region’s most prized asset.

To the first, Smith is correct.

To the second, that would be nice, but not the best way to address Siesta Key’s parking dilemmas.

Sarasota County commissioners next month are expected to address once again that persistent challenge — and one we hope never goes away: the fact Siesta Key is the best beach in the United States.

As such, our world-famous beach creates the constant dilemmas of how to manage the traffic, parking and people — and manage them in a way that our visitors want to come here again and again and again.

It’s tough being No. 1. Everyone wants a piece of you. Indeed, Siesta’s beach-parking challenges make us think of Disney World and Universal Studios and how gazillions of people flood into those parks and Orlando every day, every year.

Those parks and Siesta’s parking issues and crowds also bring to mind that famous Yogi Berra malapropism: “It’s so crowded nobody goes there anymore.” We don’t want that.

So it’s a must: To make choices that help alleviate traffic jams on and off Siesta Key, while also trying to make the beach convenient for its users.

For starters, Commissioner Al Maio wants to convert a county parcel at 6647 Midnight Pass Road into 140 parking places. But Commissioner Charles Hines says no — “Adding more parking to bring more cars over those two bridges is not a solution.”

To an extent, they’re both right.

Maio’s idea would be OK if the county charged for the parking. Priced right, experience elsewhere has shown, paid parking would help cut down on motorists cruising (wasting gas, clogging the streets and causing accidents). But that would be so only if all parking were paid.

That probably sounds like heresy.

But just read some of the works Donald Shoup, retired professor of urban planning at UCLA and often referred to as the godfather of modern parking management. His book, “The High Cost of Free Parking” is must read.

Shoup makes logical and convincing cases that while parking may seem free, there is a huge cost to it.

Adrian Moore, a Siesta Key resident and vice president of the Reason Foundation, addressed this subject a year ago in this space. Moore summed up Shoup’s principles: n “First, cities should charge the right price for curb parking, so that about 15% of spaces are vacant. That way, drivers will always be able to find one or two open curb spaces per block.

We can call this the Goldilocks price. If no curb spaces are vacant, the price is too low, and if many spaces are vacant, the price is too high. If about 15% of the spaces are vacant, the price is just right. Parking is like gasoline: Cars use it, so drivers should pay for it. n “Second, cities should return all the increased meter revenue to the metered districts. The parking revenue can pay to clean and repair the sidewalks, light the streets, remove graffiti, plant trees, provide security

and put utility wires underground in the metered districts. These public improvements will attract even more customers, some of whom will walk from the surrounding neighborhoods.”

Solution No. 2 would be off-Key parking and shuttles. Siesta Key Association President Harold Ashby has joked the county should buy Benderson Development’s 24 acres at Stickney Point Road and Tamiami Trail, site of the future Siesta Promenade. But, in truth, that should be no joke.

That property is only 10 minutes away from the beach — perfect for a shuttle system. Imagine it being similar to what Disney World does.

You’ve been there: You park in huge paid lots and ride trams and shuttles to the park. It’s 10 minutes and painless.

That would be an extraordinary step toward easing beach congestion.

What’s more, the revenue generated from the lot could help pay for the shuttles and perhaps the cost of the land. (It’s probably too late to acquire the property from Benderson — especially at a rational price. The company paid $20 million at the height of the real estate boom. The county appraiser assessed its value at $7.3 million.)

We know the idea of paid parking always has been viewed in this region as an unacceptable public policy. But commissioners, Mark Smith and other county residents who oppose paid parking should try to think of free parking as the “Tragedy of the Commons” — an abused and overused resource that just creates congestion and devalues the jewel we want to protect.

Ziegler’s persistence brings more transparency

hen Sarasota County School Board member Bridget Ziegler campaigned for election three years ago, one of her key platforms was transparency — more of it, especially when it came to the way the school board operated.

Give Ziegler credit: She has lived up to her promise — in spite of rigid resistance from three of her colleagues.

It wasn’t big news when it occurred, but it marked a dramatic change in school board protocol and transparency. As of June 20, a majority of school board members finally agreed to a change that Ziegler has lobbied for since her election in 2014:

to move the school board’s monthly afternoon workshops from a small conference room, where there was little room for the public to attend and observe, to the district’s much larger, regular board chambers.

What’s more, the afternoon workshops are now being televised on the cable-access channel, streamed live online and archived online. When she was elected in 2014, the afternoon workshops were audio recorded and could be heard if you requested a CD or thumb drive.

This sounds like a minor accomplishment. But anyone familiar with the Sarasota School Board knows three of its members — Shirley Brown, Jane Goodwin and Caroline Zucker — often have bristled and resisted Ziegler’s positions and efforts to change the board’s habits.

They liked the long-time workshop set-up — in a third-floor conference room in a building a short walk away from the school board’s chambers — a place where there were few attendees, and where board members sometimes behaved differently toward each other than they would in the regularly televised meetings.

But Ziegler persisted, bringing up the subject nearly a dozen times over the past three years. Twice in 2014

she proposed that all school board meetings be held in the board’s regular chambers and they be televised.

No support.

In early 2015, she suggested the audio versions of the afternoon workshops be posted online. No action.

By September 2016, ice was melting. The three-vote bloc agreed to move the afternoon workshops to a conference next to the regular board chambers. Still no audio recordings online.

On May 16, Ziegler added to an afternoon workshop agenda a request to move all board meetings and workshops to the board chambers and they be televised. The board postponed discussion; Superintendent Todd Bowden was not there, unable to address the cost of Ziegler’s requests.

(Turns out: $2,700 a year.)

Finally, on June 20, when the topic came up again, board member Brown said she would support Ziegler’s requests — but with a condition: if Ziegler and board member Eric Robinson would attend two Florida School Boards Association training sessions.

For Ziegler, that was a small price to pay. Now the public has full access to all school board meetings — a practice that should have existed long ago.

The letter in the July 20 edition (“Leave Big Pass alone, dredge elsewhere”) seems driven more by factless fear than the “rational self-interest” Matt Walsh endorses on the opposite page.

Rational self-interest for Siesta Key would take account of the fact that if inferior sand renourishment occurs on Lido Beach, Siesta Key will suffer.

Why? Because the southward currents carry Lido Beach sand onto the beaches south of it.

That would be a kind of poetic justice that neither Siesta Key nor Lido Key residents should want.

The fact is that Florida law requires sand sources to match the sand already on the renourished beach as closely as possible. The Army Corps of Engineers concluded such sand was not available for Lido Beach either due to the prohibitive cost of transport or the nonmatching quality of the sand. Unless the right sand is obtained, the nesting of sea turtles will be adversely affected by variation in sand coloring. The Sea Turtle Conservancy in Gainesville supports the Corps by noting that “when done correctly and in accordance with all laws to protect sea turtles and other natural resources, beach nourishment can add nesting habitat where erosion has washed it away.”

Based on an unnamed study, the writer contends that the dredging of Big Pass will allow large sea waves to destroy coastal areas such as Bird Key. The fact is that the Corps, after extensive study, has concluded in a publication released at public hearings that there will be “zero impact” of storm surges on Siesta Key. The publication further states: “The proposed project will cause no change in flood conditions during storm events.” So far, I have seen no facts from identifiable sources to refute the

The fact is that since 1986, Florida law under the Beach Management Funding Assistance Program has empowered the Florida Department of Environmental Protection to support and finance beach renourishment throughout the state. This has resulted in the restoration and subsequent maintenance of 227.8 miles, or nearly 56%, of Florida’s critically eroded beaches.

Beach renourishment is not an untried and unacceptably risky proposition that some would make it out to be.

Instead of trying to refute facts with fear, it would be better for all concerned to follow the lead of Longboat Key and Lido Beach. They have from time to time shared stop-gap sand from the dredging of New Pass without any of the catastrophes envisioned by opponents of Big Pass dredging. Unfortunately, that limited and uncertain sharing is not enough to meet the needs of Lido Beach. But it is a good example of the “rational selfinterest” that Matt Walsh endorses. Rational self-interest is not a zero-sum game.

Trump is a blessing compared to the alternative William B. Allen’s letter in response to Susan McCullough’s July 6 rant perfectly described Democrats—the party of Feelers, not Thinkers. The July 6 edition also featured a letter from another deep thinker, whose complaint about intemperate comments ended by calling Donald Trump a “vile, selfish, draft-dodging sociopath.” Oh, those temperate Dems.

That writer seems to believe that media darling Barack Obama was treated poorly during his term in office, which included a disastrous foreign policy resulting in the distrust of our allies and the contempt of our enemies, an equally disastrous economic policy that doubled our national debt, a laughable health care program that no one wanted or needed, and an unparalleled series of lies featuring campaign promises later dismissed a “campaign rhetoric,” and his whoppers about Obamacare.

He ruled as a dictator, bypassing the elected representatives of the people with his “pen and phone” executive orders whenever he could not get his own way through the demo-

cratic process. He was by every measure the worst president in our nation’s history. The letter writer and his ilk, Feelers all, are convinced that any opposition to Obama had to be racism. This in spite of the fact that his tenure in office was a spectacular failure, and that the man is a demonstrable megalomaniac.

Finally, the letter writer wants to be told when Hillary Clinton made any crass comments. He seems to “feel” that calling half the citizens of the United States “a basket of deplorables” doesn’t qualify as crass, nor does her “what difference does it make” reference to the slaughter of our people at Benghazi, following her lies about its cause and her indifference to rescuing them.

It could be worse. Hillary Clinton, whose lust for power is palpable, might have been elected. Even Trump is a blessing compared to the prospect of that nightmare.

Parking, term limits and horrible flooding I have three issues to discuss: 1) We went to see a play at Florida Studio Theatre the other night, and it took us 35 minutes to find a parking place.

Why doesn’t the city allow evening parking in the delivery spaces? At least that would open up a few more spots.

2) The only way we can get Congress to do what is right for the people is to have term limits.

3) Why aren’t you writing about the horrible flooding that is occurring in the southwest corner of U.S. 41 and Gulfstream?

The woman turned on a song that one of her friends did not like, and he told her to turn it off several times. Her friend became very agitated, but their other friends were eventually able to calm him down.

DRIVER ANGRY 2 a.m. — 300 block of North Brink Avenue Lost/found property: A man reported that his phone was missing. He told the police he believed he left it in the backseat of someone else’s car after getting driven home via a ride-sharing service the previous night. He traced the phone to a home in Manatee County and made contact with the driver at his residence, but the driver kicked the man off his property before he had a chance to mention his phone. An officer asked the man why the driver kicked him off the property. The man said he was highly intoxicated that night, and that he was probably rude to the driver.

Thorpe, who did not address the gathering, was stoic as the accolades flowed.

The ceremony was brief, but

the gesture was lasting. For those in attendance, Paul N. Thorpe Jr. Park is more than a 6,600-square-foot parcel. It’s a legacy honored.

Bilyeu said he had received several telephone calls that morning from people wondering if they would continue with the ceremony despite the weather. He choked back tears as he looked at the audience that had gathered to honor Thorpe.

“I’m glad we did,” he said.

It was standing-room only July 21 on the corner of Pineapple and Lemon avenues.

Residents, neighborhood advocates and city officials gathered at the former Pineapple Park to rededicate its newly improved mermaid fountain.

“Gosh, this is really something,” Nancy Goodheart Matthews said as she greeted guests. Matthews contributed the ceramic artwork to the fountain, which now features a male and female side as well as a compass rose.

“I wanted to make a piece of art that is whole,” Matthews said.

The park, which was officially renamed for city leader Paul Thorpe at 10 a.m. on July 22, is best known for the distinctive blue fountain. However, after falling into disrepair, the landmark became a controversial fixture among residents who rebuffed city suggestions to alter its appearance earlier this year.

But all controversy was forgotten July 21 as speakers ran down the long list of people responsible for the improvements. Parks and Recreation Director Jerry Fogle made sure to thank the City Commission and other city staffers.

“We couldn’t have done this project with them,” he said.

ust more than a decade ago, Mike Ford was the talk of Sarasota sports.

He put up video game numbers in 2005 as a senior running back at Sarasota High, rushing for 2,836 yards, the 11th-most in state history, and 37 touchdowns.

A five-star recruit, Ford had his pick of schools, and initially chose the University of Alabama, before academic issues forced Ford into a year of postgrad ball at Hargrave Military Academy in Chatham, Va. He ended up at the University of South Florida, where Ford split carries with a bevy of other running backs during three seasons.

After that, the name Mike Ford wasn’t bantered as often around town. He played in just about every football league in existence, including the Canadian Football League with the Toronto Argonauts, but nothing took. His heart was no longer in it, he said.

Now, though, the name is back.

Ford, 30, is attempting to make it as a professional boxer under the tutelage of Florida Boxing Hall of Fame coach Harold Wilen.

In his time out of the spotlight, Ford found God, he said, and realized he had to make some life

changes. He has six children, and he’s determined to raise them the best way he can.

“It’s not about Mike Ford anymore,” he said.

The 6-foot-2, 240-pound Ford has been around boxing his whole life. He loved watching fights on TV, especially any involving Mike Tyson. Tyson had a champion’s mentality, Ford said, and he wanted one, too.

While at Sarasota High, Ford would dabble in boxing, thanks to friends like Larian “Action” Jackson and Cornell Harris Jr., also known as “Pickle.” He would come with them to Sarasota Boxing Club and do some training, but never seriously entertained pursuing the sport. He was in and out of boxing, Ford said.

On March 7, 2009, Harris, who was close to turning pro as a boxer, and Ford had chatted about opening a combination football-boxing training facility. They would never get the chance. Hours after their conversation, Harris Jr. was killed in a home-invasion robbery. He was 21 years old.

Now that Ford himself is in the ring, he’s promising to give 100% in memory of his friend. When he started seriously training with Wilen four years ago, he assured him there would be no more hopping “in and out” of boxing.

“I told him (Wilen), ‘Coach, I’ve got two feet in,’” Ford said.

Harris Jr. isn’t the only important person Ford has lost. A few years before, on July 6, 2007, Ford’s father, Robert Ford, died.

The two were close, Ford said, and losing him left a vacancy in his life. Ford no longer had a strong male presence to give him advice and help when things got tough.

That presence is something Ford would miss throughout the next decade, especially when his life “started going down,” he said.

Ford told Wilen as much at a recent training session, while Wilen wrapped Ford’s hands. Ford asked Wilen if he would fill that void. Wilen looked Ford in the eyes and said, “Yes.” Ford calls Wilen “Pops” now, and said the coach unintention-

ally acts just like his father did.

“He’s all heart,” Ford said of his coach. “He keeps me going.”

Wilen believes in Ford’s potential, but has him on what Wilen called the “intelligent fast track” due to his age. It won’t be easy, but if Ford dedicates himself to training, arrives at the club every day and puts in the work, he’s got a chance to find real success, Wilen said.

“What’s in his favor is that he’s an incredible athlete,” Wilen said.

“All that (ability) makes the boxing easier. It’s going to work.

“I think we can do something in the next few years in the heavyweight division.”

Athletic Ford was. He’s remembered around Sarasota for being a bruising running back, but Ford said he was actually better on the defensive side of the ball. Coaches just couldn’t resist his power and speed combination when he had the ball. Football wasn’t even his best sport, Ford said. That was baseball. He didn’t play that at Sarasota High, though now he thinks he should have. He played every position but outfield, and had a howitzer for an arm.

Both sports require skills that helped his transition to boxing, Ford said, his footwork as a running back chief among them.

Vision out of the backfield also helps. In regards to baseball, well, you see the ball and you hit the ball, Ford said. You swing hard and accurate, no matter if you’re using a bat or a fist.

Ford’s professional record is 3-0. When asked if he ever gets nervous in the ring, Ford responds with a sharp “hell no.” That’s just not who he is, he said. Talking while sitting in front of the club, Ford is jovial, but when the hands are wrapped, he said, he is all business.

In Ford’s mind, his opponent is trying to keep his kids from eating, and Ford isn’t going to let that happen.

“Right now I’m just OK, and I’m working on getting good,” Ford said. “But it’s always been in my heart to be great.”

Beach ballers Is Siesta Beach’s unique sand good for volleyball?

I

haven’t been here a year yet, but I’ve been here long enough to know that area folks are darn proud of Siesta Key Beach, which was once again rated the best beach in the country.

Area folks love it so much, they wish it would stop being ranked highly, so out-of-staters stop visiting it. According to many Observer Facebook comments, area folks are concerned “Siesta Key,” MTV’s upcoming reality show on party animal 20-somethings will bring even more unwanted punks.

I can attest to the beach’s magic. The first time I stepped through the palm trees, felt the breeze whistle through my thistle-like beard and saw the Gulf’s slow-rolling waves, I felt at home. The views are a large part of the beach’s appeal, but so is its white sand. The 99% pure quartz crystal minerals keep feet from frying and make beach bums feel like they are frolicking in flour.

The grains are soft, and don’t stick (to skin, at least), but the overall surface is hard. It’s great for laying out and getting some sun, but is it great for every activity?

Beach Tour Championships in Siesta Key from July 20-25, I decided to find out what outof-state athletes thought of the surface. And yes, USA Volleyball does refer to it as “beach” volleyball, even though some people (including fellow Observer-ites) refuse to call it anything but sand.

The results? Let’s call them mixed.

Max Roquet and Nick Eichenberger, both 15, have been beach partners for three years, despite

living three hours apart. Roquet lives in Des Moines, Iowa, and Eichenberger in Kansas City, Mo. Both boys said there were benefits and drawbacks to playing on Siesta’s harder sand.

“It’s easier to hit, but harder to dive,” Roquet said.

He pointed to a mark the size and color of a Red Delicious apple on the right side of his abdomen. “I got this from diving yesterday,” he said.

Ouch.

Eichenberger said most sand causes feet to sink while playing, making jumping for spikes and blocks more difficult. That’s not the case here, he said, and that’s a positive. It was a quick adjustment for the duo. When I spoke to them, they had just won a match to move to 5-0 in

the championships. They ended up reaching the Boys 16U Gold Bracket championship match, but lost in straight sets.

Hannah Payan and Kalei Kepler, both 14-year-olds from El Paso, Texas, didn’t see quite the same success, bowing out in the second round of the Girls 14U Bronze bracket. They had similar thoughts on the sand, though.

“It’s easier to jump, for sure,” Payan said. “I like that it’s nice and cold.”

She also noted the wind was an element she isn’t used to dealing with in El Paso.

Kepler prefers the sand here, which she compares to cement, because it allows for faster running. It was a new experience for her. The sand in Texas might as

well be dirt, she said, which is perhaps the harshest roasting of sand I’ve ever heard.

The other three participants couldn’t pick one surface they preferred. But consensus seems to be that, if not the best, Siesta Key Beach is a viable championship spot from a player’s perspective, with sand that presents a unique and fun challenge.

Just don’t dive unless you have no other choice.

N

ot all heroes wear capes — an axiom Southeastern Guide Dogs embraces in its work training guide dogs for people with visual impairments and post-traumatic stress disorder.

But on July 19 at Dimmitt Automotive Group’s The Sarasota Studio, Southeastern Guide Dogs’ four-legged heroes got the capes they deserve.

The organization revealed its latest batch of superhero statues. Each dog and puppy statue was sponsored by a local business and featured a cape of its own.

“Our dogs make a profound impact on people with visual impairments and veterans with post-traumatic stress disorder,” said Andy Kramer, vice president of philanthropy. “Like superheroes, our dogs save the day.”

Sponsors lined up behind their superhero statues, each draped with a sheet, before the big reveal. Guests applauded each of the caped statues as the covers were removed.

It was an evening of celebration for Southeastern Guide Dogs staff and sponsors alike.

“Behind every successful service organization is a supportive community,” Kramer said.

“We are so happy the Sarasota community has supported Southeastern Guide Dogs.”

Ride of a lifetime How a cross-country ride inspired one local resident to give back.

It was a long road that lead Courtney Lambert to Big Brothers Big Sisters of the Sun Coast.

Actually, to be specific, it was a

2,500-mile road.

It started two years ago when friend’s of Lambert and her partner, Kory Souza, created a crosscountry motorcycle ride to benefit Bikers Against Bullies, Youth and Family Services in South Dakota and the national chapter of Big Brothers Big Sisters.

The first ride attracted about 20 riders, but Lambert and Souza, both of Sarasota, weren’t among them. Then the next year rolled

“They said, ‘Oh, you guys have to do it! Please, come. It will change your life,’” Lambert said.

“We’re like, ‘OK, that’s a little extreme.’”

Despite their skepticism, Souza agreed to participate in the 2016 ride.

Souza, with Lambert driving a trailer behind, road 2,500 miles from Santa Maria, Calif., to Sturgis, S.D.

“It’s really cool because throughout the ride someone from each of those organizations is there,” Lambert said. “It’s really emotional because we give them the check, and they talk about what they are going to use the money for; they bring some kids with them.”

When Big Brothers Big Sisters took the stage, Lambert understood what her friends meant.

She doesn’t remember exactly what was said, but she remembers how the testimonies of the bigs and littles — shorthand for the adults and youth in the organization — made her feel. Her life was changed.

After the ride, she discovered Big Brothers Big Sisters of the Sun Coast and applied to be a big sister. The organization facilitates mentorships between adults and area youth. The objective is to provide stability for children who might be living in unstable environments.

“The kids might not have the opportunity to do stuff outside of the house if they don’t have a big,” Lambert said. “They might not have parents at all, they may be with their grandparents. Their grandparents might be houseridden and all these kinds of situations.”

After her interview with Mentor Manager Colleen Duffy, Lambert was matched with her little sister, Tayah, in May. Even before she was matched, Duffy remembers Lambert coming into the Big Brothers Big Sisters office in April asking if she could buy Easter baskets for children. Not only did she buy baskets for a family of children, she brought a bouquet of flowers for

their mother.

“I think that’s how Courtney is,” Duffy said. “She is teaching her little that kind of stuff — to be grateful and to be happy.”

On July 29, nearly a year after Lambert began her journey to Big Brothers Big Sisters, she’s hitting the road again on the ride that started it all.

She and Souza will once again be participating in the crosscountry roll, but this year, Lambert won’t be driving the trailer.

She’ll be on her bike with 100 other participants, riding more than 400 miles a day from the pre-party in Las Vegas to the official starting point in Santa Maria, Calif., and then on to Sturgis, S.D. “It’s kind of like a parade when you see everybody go by,” Lambert said.

It’s quite the logistical undertaking. Lambert has to map out fuel stops and lodging in seven states across 3,500 miles. So far, fundraisers have garnered more than $130,000, but Lambert is hoping to bolster that to $150,000 during the ride with raffles and fundraising at each stop.

Although the money raised benefits the national chapter, Duffy said anything that helps Big Brothers Big Sisters as a whole helps the local branch as well.

“Now she has a story to tell,” Duffy said. “I think that’s really important for us.”

As for Lambert, it’s hard for her to chose a single part to which she is most looking forward. She’s excited to see the scenery and meet people at each of the stops, but one thing is for sure. Her friends were right.

“I will say now it totally changed our lives,” Lambert said.

It was at their first Art, Rhymes & Beer event two years ago that they met Jessica DiLorenzo, the arts integration specialist for Any Given Child.

“I was immediately blown away with how professional they were, and how the underlying message was really to bring the community together and ... use music and hip-hop to spread positive messages, which is different than what a lot of artists are doing,” DiLorenzo said.

Any Given Child is a Kennedy Center initiative to expand local arts offerings in schools. It’s a goal DiLorenzo thought paired well with Bauduin and Larrañaga’s

mission. She asked them if they would consider adapting their program for children.

So they swapped the beer for some kid-friendly beats, formed a band, created a set and Art, Rhymes & Kids was born.

The pair was able to launch a pilot program in June, performing in four area schools with Larrañaga as the front man. He introduces the genre and walks the children through its elements. Eventually, the children break out in groups, writing a rap using prompts provided by Art, Rhymes & Kids band members.

“That’s one of their main goals as well,” DiLorenzo said. “Collaboration is a tool to empower students.”

However, that’s just one of many objectives. Bauduin and Larrañaga want to instill in their audience the importance of creativity and education. But, above all, they want to make role models, especially role models in the

His lyrics may rhyme, but don’t call him a rapper.

For hip-hop artist Ryan “Ryanito” Larrañaga, the title is too terse to describe his artistry, too trite to describe the evolution of his medium — an amalgamation of culture and genre.

“You get lost without knowing where something came from.”

Larrañaga said. “Jazz is kind of like a grandfather of hip-hop.

It’s the same elements except the addition of the vocal and the rhyming portion, but if you look at it, the same elements exist.”

It’s an attitude he carries through all of his art, but has particular relevance to his latest endeavor — Art, Rhymes & Kids, a program designed to teach elementary students the history of hip-hop through jazz.

Just like his music, the program is the product of creative evolution. Larrañaga, along with program co-curator Marcel Bauduin, launched Art, Rhymes & Kids in June. The pair are known for their radio show, “Coffee and Donuts,”

arena of hip-hop, more accessible.

“There are these preconceived opinions ... about (hip-hop),” Bauduin said. “We want to show the impact and the influence it can have when you value the culture and it’s used in a positive, community-conscious way.”

For Larrañaga, that mission is personal. He grew up in lowincome neighborhoods throughout Maryland, eventually settling in Baltimore in his teens. He learned his medium like most kids learned how to ride a bike — slowly, through trial and error.

He started playing the violin in third grade, then learned he could sing, then rap. He started writing his own lyrics and developed a voice. Larrañaga said he is proud of where he ended up. However, his introduction to his art took place in less than favorable conditions. A program like Art, Rhymes & Kids, he said, could have made a world of difference.

“It would have changed my whole life,” Larrañaga said, “because I learned the hard way that music was my medium, was my outlet.”

Larrañaga and Bauduin, along with DiLorenzo, have big dreams for the program. They want to introduce it into more schools and varying grade levels.

“We haven’t nailed down the details,” DiLorenzo said. “It’s really just a matter of finding teachers who are excited about this who are willing to partner with them.”

So for now, the pair, along with their band, are continuing to develop their set. They’re confident their program, like their medium, has the power to evoke change.

“We are pretty confident that given enough time you can adapt a program to whatever it is,” Bauduin said. “That’s what hiphop is. It’s something that’s been adapted.”

he steady rain and gray clouds almost put a damper on Mote Marine Laboratory and Aquarium’s Mommy and Me Camp.

By the time the campers were ready to explore Sarasota Bay on July 20, the rain turned to a drizzle and the sun started breaking through. The rain was over by the time campers had dip nets in their hands.

Campers and “their favorite adults” took to the water to search for marine life. Campers found shells, crabs and other sea treasures.

Group recognizes Young Professional of the Year The Community Foundation’s Murray Devine received the inaugural award ANNA BRUGMANN STAFF WRITER

What makes a young professional?

Young Professionals Group Chairman-elect Rob Young posed the question July 21 at the YPG Summit at University of South Florida Sarasota-Manatee.

In short, Young said, it’s a person under 40 who has to work for a living. It’s a broad criteria, but some in the category are more impressive than others. YPG honored three individuals by naming them their Young Professional of the Year award finalists — Andrea Knies, assistant director of community engagement at New College of Florida; Britney Guertin, director of public relations and social media at Grapevine Communications; and Murray Devine, communication and marketing manager at the Community Foundation of Sarasota County.

“We were able to identify individuals who have a love and passion for Sarasota and embodied what it means to be a young professional and really give of themselves,” Young Professionals Group Coordinator Mimi Cirbusova said.
