arasota stands on the shoulders of giants — Ringling, Selby, Booker. Their investments echo through halls of the buildings that bear their names.

On June 26, the city lost another. Alfred R. Goldstein died of lung cancer at 92.

His legacy casts a long shadow in the Sarasota community, touching institutions from Ringling College of Art and Design to Marie Selby Botanical Gardens. In fact, it would be more difficult to name an organization that Goldstein did not influence since he retired to the area in 1986 after a successful career as a developer in New York.

Sarasota, ACLU settle case on homelessness

Two years after the American Civil Liberties Union filed a lawsuit against the city regarding its treatment of the homeless, the two sides have settled the case.

The agreement, approved by a federal judge June 22, states the city must provide emergency shelter beds for homeless people, prohibiting scenarios in which people are allowed to sleep on the floor except in emergencies.

The city is not allowed to enforce its lodging out-of-doors ordinance if shelter beds are not available.

The city will pay $1,000 to the eight homeless individuals named as plaintiffs in the case, and $27,000 to cover opposing attorney’s fees.

he county’s evacuation zone map for 2017 has been updated, and in case of an emergency, residents need to “know your zone” now — before it’s too late.

If a hurricane or other large storm were to approach the Sarasota area, Sarasota County Emergency Management Chief Ed McCrane and his staff would track its progress in tandem with state officials, and issue mandatory evacuations if necessary, based on which zones are at most risk from a predicted level of storm surge.

“The purpose [of evacuation zones] is to get people out of harm’s way that potentially could be overrun or inundated with water from the Gulf of Mexico,” McCrane said.

Storm surge is a dome of water, rising as a result of a storm’s lower atmospheric pressure and pushed ashore or into bays, inlets and rivers by storm winds. High, winddriven surf, can heighten surge’s danger, which can penetrate well inland from the coast.

Zone A, marked red on the map, is nearest the coastline and includes all of the barrier islands, as well as areas along rivers that are prone to flooding.

The zone was identified when the National Hurricane Center reviewed a new SLOSH — sea, lake, and overland surges from hurricanes — model that looked at the paths that hundreds of potential hurricanes could take.

This year’s tests also included a closer look at the topography of the area — measured within inches, instead of feet as in past years.

Zone A was identified to have a potential for dangerous flooding from storm surge 10 feet above sea level. Each subsequent zone

builds on the previous, culminating inland with Zone E’s 32 feet.

McCrane said the National Hurricane Center doesn’t reexamine the data every year, and the last map was issued in 2010.

But this year, because of new technology and new standards, they issued a new map that puts more people in the red zone.

“Each color represents the worst case scenario for each model run,” McCrane said. “If they ran it 3,000 times in red, the worst is the one they utilized.”

If a storm was approaching, McCrane said it’s hard to tell exactly what the emergency management staff would do.

“Every storm is different.

There’s no set pattern that you just go by,” he said. “We have to use the information that we have to warn people and get them out of harm’s way.”

That would include monitoring the storm and issuing evacuation warnings or mandates about 48 hours before the storm would likely hit land. In the time leading up to that, teams would also begin to establish shelters and plans for evacuating people who are disabled.

Officials would also be coordinating with the National Weather Service, the state Emergency Operations Center and surrounding counties to plan and get information out.

The only time in McCrane’s 12 year history in his role that a mandatory evacuation was issued, he said, was during Tropical Storm Faye in 2008, and that was only for mobile homes. Even though in that case, the storm broke up and went around the county before coming together again.

“You do everything you can up until the point you can no longer take action,” he said, sure to point out that time always comes.

When winds are sustained at 50 miles per hour, he can’t send emergency crews to help those in need who didn’t evacuate when they should have.

At that point, everyone just has to wait.

With Fourth of July around the corner, one of everyone’s biggest concerns is parking — especially at the site of one of the area’s most popular fireworks shows.

It’s a problem Siesta Key residents struggle with every holiday — like Siesta Estates resident Lori Jasper on Memorial Day. When people parked just outside the gated community’s wall, on land the residents recently paid $16,000 to have landscaped, Jasper was told by the Sheriff’s Office deputies couldn’t enforce parking issues on private property.

“I know it’s a beautiful beach, and I know we want to share it,” Jasper said, “but I believe people who come here should respect it.”

The Sheriff’s Office said in a statement that it is the responsibility of condo management to monitor parking issues.

“We hire an employee on overtime on the Fourth to just direct people away,” said Excelsior Beach to Bay Property Manager Dan Watnem.

Horizons Siesta hires a security guard as well, who ultimately will put locking devices on cars that are not where they should be.

Other condominiums install gates to keep nonresidents out, which is an option Watnem is considering for his property. He said it may be more practical to not give people the option to get in.

For people visiting the Key, the temptation to park in the first spot you see is understandable, but resident and Siesta Key Chamber of Commerce Chairman Mark Smith suggests the best way might be to avoid the problem altogether.

“My first recommendation to anyone on and off the Key is to find another way to get to the beach, or see the fireworks, without driving. Anything but driving the car.”

COULD A NEW PARKING LOT HELP THE PROBLEM? In the next year, salvation for residents and visitors may come in the form of a new parking lot at 6647 Midnight Pass Road.

At that location is a parcel of land that’s shared by Sarasota County Utilities and the Sheriff’s Office. When the sheriff vacates the property in October for a new facility, County Commissioner Al Maio hopes to turn part of the property into a public parking lot with about 140 spaces.

“Parking is a premium on Siesta Key, and this lot, owned by the county, is the perfect opportunity to get additional parking,” said Smith, who sketched out preliminary plans for the lot, though they aren’t ready to be

Watnem agrees. “[Parking is] a growing problem, but with this Breeze trolley, I think that’s a good thing for a lot of folks — both the owners here and people who can park in a different area,” Watnem said.

Those wishing to head to Siesta Key for Fourth of July can do what Smith recommended and bike over from the mainland. A representative of Sarasota County Area Transit said no buses will be running on July 4.

If you do take your car, parking can be found in the Siesta Village, at Siesta Beach or at some churches on the island.

The Sheriff’s Office recommends getting there early — last year, the main parking lot filled up by 9 a.m. each day that weekend. The Sheriff’s Office also recommends carpooling or trying a service like Uber, and encourages everyone to “pack your patience.”

seen by the public. “So I’m happy that the County Commission and staff are working to make that happen.”

The County Commission already has voted unanimously to not sell the land, and unanimously approved the utility department’s recommendation that the land be used unintrusively, Maio said.

“People have been very patient,” Maio said.

“It’s an incremental and sequential process.”

After the Sheriff’s Office leaves the property, the process of finding funds, demolishing an existing building on the property and drawing up plans will begin. Maio said if all goes well, he’d expect there to be some headway on the project by the new year.

“I’m going to do my very best to make sure this doesn’t fail,” he said.

Builders used to construct homes just a few feet above sea level. Now, regulations require an 11-foot base level of elevation in the neighborhood. As a result, newly constructed homes can sit more than a dozen feet above a neighboring property.

water sits on the road and builds up.”

Beginning next month, the county will start installing “open throat” intakes along curbs in the neighborhood. Those wider openings will have a basket inside, designed to catch any vegetation and prevent blockages.

“This will probably alleviate a lot of the problem,” Lancaster said. “Right now, we have to go out there and clear the drain.”

Even when the county finishes that project in August, residents and officials believe more needs to be done. Lancaster said there’s

ing on addressing the flooding in the long-term, too.

First, the quick fix: Throughout Sarasota, flooding is often exacerbated when vegetation washes into drains, according to county Stormwater Utility Manager Molly Williams. This is particularly problematic in Harbor Acres, where the water gets cleared through grated inlets.

The smaller openings amplify the effects of blockages.

“Even if it’s cleared out ahead of time, there’s vegetation that gets blown off the trees,” Williams said. “That blocks the grates, and

When it rains in Sarasota during the summer, it floods.

It’s a natural byproduct of a confluence of factors. Heavy rains, proximity to the bay, aging infrastructure and urban development increase the odds that water will build up instead of draining without issue. In some cases, it’s just a fact of life.

In the Harbor Acres neighborhood, located on the bayfront just south of Hudson Bayou, residents believe their problems are more complicated. Bonnie Lancaster has lived in the area for more than 30 years. Over that time, she’s seen the annual flooding issues get steadily worse.

“I get so much water in front of my house that it’s unsafe,” Lancaster said. “I’m not even able to leave my house.”

The flooding doesn’t just happen after significant weather events, like named storms. Normal afternoon rain will leave water standing in her driveway and the street in front of her house. And, from what she can gather, there’s no easy solution.

County officials are aware of the problem, and they agree it’s a particularly challenging situation. They have identified a short-term change they think will help, though, and are work-

rebuilt, it means a heavier concentration of water in the streets.

“There’s no way the neighborhood can manage the water if any more houses are torn down and built up,” Lancaster said.

The stormwater system dates back to the 1940s, when the sea level was a foot lower. Originally, the neighborhood was platted for 3,000-square-feet lots. New homes in Harbor Acres are closer to 12,000 square feet.

Often, it floods because the rain has nowhere else to go.

“There’s not necessarily a blockage,” Williams said. “It’s just high tide.”

In January, the County Commission approved a $162,830 contract with engineering firm Kimley-Horn to further study the issue — and hopefully, to identify solutions. The study will consider building regulations, sea level rise and the county’s access to land in the area where it could install improved infrastructure.

Officials hope the findings will be applicable to other neighborhoods dealing with similar issues.

To fund any improvements, Harbor Acres residents might have to pay a special assessment, because the county’s stormwater utility doesn’t collect money for capital projects.

Even though there won’t be a definitive resolution anytime soon, Lancaster is appreciative officials are taking a serious look at the flooding problems in the neighborhood.

“I do think it’s time to step back and evaluate what they’re doing going forward,” Lancaster said. “Nobody’s going to be able to drive in the streets.”

When some people look at the North Trail, they see a blighted part of the city that’s struggled to take advantage of the growth that’s reshaping the urban core.

Thanks to Ringling College of Art and Design and other higher education institutions, at least

two investors see opportunity, instead.

In the past two months, a pair of developers has moved forward with projects located just south of the Ringling College campus.

Both projects — one a coffee shop, the other an apartment complex — seek to take advantage of their proximity to students.

plans with the city earlier this month for a Starbucks at 2455 N. Tamiami Trail. The documents say the coffee shop would be open from 5 a.m. to 9 p.m. daily.

The property, just south of Dr. Martin Luther King Way, is .56 acres. The documents list the targeted completion of the project as December.

Benderson Director of Development Todd Mathes didn’t comment on the details of the development, but said the company is confident investing in the North Trail.

“Ringling College is a phenomenal local asset, and so we have all the faith in the world in the future of that area,” Mathes said.

In May, the city’s Historic Preservation Board considered an application for a student housing project on the parcel just south of the Benderson site at 2433 N. Tamiami Trail. The board voted 4-2 to approve the demolition of the existing structure on the property, which did not have any historic designation but was listed in the Florida Master Site File because it dates to 1933.

Representatives for property owner Tembo Enterprises did not respond to multiple requests for comment. Brent Parker, whose architecture firm Parker Walter Group produced a preliminary plan for the project, said the developer intends to build about 30 apartment units on 1.4 acres.

Tembo Enterprises has not filed a final site plan for the project. Parker said the developer is weighing options before officially submitting documents to the city.

The Consortium of Colleges on the Creative Coast — C4, for short — is a collaborative group formed in 2015. It includes three schools on the North Trail: Ringling College, University of South Florida Sarasota-Manatee, and New College of Florida.

Laurey Stryker, manager of the C4 initiative, said collaboration and expansion is creating increased interest in developments targeted at the colleges.

“There’s always been that caveat — are there enough students together to justify private investors?” Stryker said. “The growth of the institutions can only increase interest from outside developers.”

North Trail stakeholders are excited about the prospect of new buildings going up. Jay Patel is the owner of the Regency Inn and chairman of the North Trail Redevelopment Partnership.

Even if the two projects are isolated ventures and not a sign of a wave of growth, he wants to make sure people are aware of the success stories along U.S. 41.

“Every small improvement is a big deal for the Trail, because it breaks the whole notion of derelict properties and a negative element walking around,” Patel said.

“It’s changed quite a bit.”

Hillary Clinton, the 2016 Democratic Party presidential candidate, tweeted on June 23: “Forget death panels. If Republicans pass this bill, they’re the death party.”

Donald Trump, during the 2016 election campaign, called her “Crooked Hillary.”

U.S. Sen. Elizabeth Warren, D-Mass., described the Senate health care bill as “blood money. People will die … Senate Republicans were … dreaming up even meaner ways to kick dirt in the face of the American people and take away their health insurance.”

And then there was the technology chairman of the Nebraska Democratic Party, commenting about Republican U.S. Rep. Steve Scalise, who nearly died after being shot by a rabid antiRepublican Democrat: “His whole job is to get people, convince Republicans to f---ing kick people off f---ing healthcare. I hate this mother---. I’m glad he got shot.”

Eric Trump calls the chairman of the Democratic National Committee on FoxNews a “nut job.”

Johnny Depp … Kathy Griffin …

Shakespeare in the Park … The list goes on and on.

So it is. On the eve of the day the Declaration of Independence was ratified — pledging to each other their lives, fortunes and sacred honor; and declaring liberty and renouncing tyranny — on the eve of the day Americans will celebrate the 241st anniversary of the birth of what has become the greatest democratic republic in history, we are ripped apart. A strongly woven garment ripped jaggedly at the seams, with the perpetrators standing opposite one another gripping serrated knives.

This is not right. We should be feeling patriotic. We should be feeling proud to be an American, proud of the values we have pursued and cherished for two and a half centuries — that “all men are created equal, that they are endowed by their Creator with certain unalienable Rights, that among these are Life, Liberty and the pursuit of Happiness.” As a friend said recently: “To be an American is to win the lottery of life.”

But for eight intense months, we have seen and felt hatred, a molten, volcanic ash spewing everywhere, our nation deteriorating and descending into an uncivil war. Actually, another friend told me recently: “I think we are in a civil war and don’t know it.”

There are many catalysts for this cauldron — an amalgamation over decades of deteriorating social, cultural and political mores. But these enzymes converged, convulsed and blew after the 2016 presidential election — and let’s be honest — when the core of the Democratic Party refused to accept that American voters elected Donald Trump over Hillary Clinton.

To make it worse, the biases of the New York Times, Washington Post and national television news networks have fueled the hatred to a level that none of us in four generations has experienced such vile and vitriol in the public square.

This is why we said: Ben Franklin, where are you?

In his day, at the time of the American Revolution, as a signator of the Declaration of Independence and later the U.S. Constitution, Franklin was widely regarded as the sage of America. He was the young nation’s chief advocate, example and leader for good citizenship. He defined good citizenship — in his actions and his prolific writing.

As a citizen of Philadelphia, he was constantly at the forefront of efforts to make it more livable. He led efforts to install pavement and bricks to help get rid of the sludge that covered the streets. He used his newspaper to raise funds for a Philadelphia hospital. He created the nation’s first volunteer fire company, which led to the creation of the first insurance company to protect homes against fire.

But the way Franklin behaved and wrote about the virtues of good citizenship set him apart. Under such pseudonyms as Silence Dogood, Busy-Body, Alice Addertongue, Obadiah Plainman, Homespun and Poor Richard, he communicated to the common citizen about the importance of character and virtues — crucial, he believed, for the new nation’s form of government to succeed.

He especially focused on this after the Revolutionary War. This was when Franklin penned his 13 virtues by which to live in his “Autobiography.”

Go down the list. While Franklin targeted these virtues at the common man, apply them today. They are apropos for everyone — especially so for our national elected leaders and the media. Indeed, instead of incessantly looking for ways to tear down, excoriate, ridicule and incite extremes, for Franklin, virtue and morality meant doing good to one’s fellow man.

“One Man of tolerable Abilities may work great Changes,” Franklin wrote in “Autobiography.”

His was a life of that. By living the virtue of humility, Franklin practiced a leadership style of dignified persuasion. In a 2013 essay for the Heritage Foundation, Steven Forde, a political science professor at the University of North Texas and Franklin scholar, wrote: “One of Franklin’s earliest lessons … was that a contentious or imperious style is self-defeating. Rather than persuading men, it offends their pride and accomplishes nothing.”

Franklin learned, Forde wrote, “that his public-spirited proposals often encountered resistance rooted in envy. No matter how beneficial the project, some would refuse to follow if they thought it would elevate the leader above the rest. Franklin therefore began to present projects as the initiative of ‘a number of friends’ or ‘publick-spirited Gentlemen,’ even if the initiative was wholly his. This greatly smoothed the way by removing the issue of personal credit or honor.”

With this practice, he formed the “Club for Mutual Improvement,” called the “Junto” — his 10 most intelligent friends. They discussed morals, politics and philosophy. Club rules

forbid abrasive chiding or personal attacks — the kind of behavior that is so commonplace in today’s public square, on television and throughout social media. Virtually nowhere can you find examples of Franklin erupting into public tantrums or vitriolic or demeaning commentaries.

Franklin, far wiser than most, knew the fragility of what the Framers created. He warned that only a citizenry with the proper temper can support a free government. That’s why, when asked once what kind of government he and the Framers created, Franklin responded: “A republic, if you can keep it.”

Time to review the city’s development incentives The city’s Andres Duany-inspired zoning code for downtown is glaringly flawed with incentives favoring development.

t’s budget time in Sarasota.

This is the time when city commissioners make the hard decisions about where to allocate the city’s income and how to increase income in the future. This would also be an excellent time to review incentives and fee structures as they pertain to the city’s transportation needs and the development review process.

First, transportation: Sarasota’s 1-square-mile downtown is expected to increase its population by at least 75% in the next few years. Already congested roads will be worse.

If we want to encourage people to leave their cars at home, there are only two main options — walking and public transportation.

Walking in Sarasota can be problematic. The SarasotaNorth Port-Bradenton area is among the 10 most dangerous metro areas in the nation for pedestrians — with special notoriety for U.S. 41 from Main Street to the Manatee line.

On the other hand, public transportation is infrequent, inconsistent and inconvenient.

Improving public transportation is costly. But despite the need for funding, multimodal fees on new development were set at ridiculously low levels as

an incentive to development in 2014 when the fees were enacted. These fees were not raised until a few months ago.

An alternative potential source of transportation fees — the so-called “proportionate share” fees that could result from the concurrency traffic studies required of larger developments — is so filled with development inducements that it has almost no chance of being productive.

Second, the most controversial incentive in Sarasota is administrative approval.

Administrative approval is an expedited process that allows certain projects to be OK’d by city staff rather at Planning Board and City Commission public hearings.

In the downtown, ALL substantial projects are eligible for administrative approval as long as they adhere to the strictures of the zoning code.

The concept of administrative approval came to town in the wake of Andres Duany’s new urbanist plan for downtown Sarasota. That vision rested on the notion that a well-written code based on the principles of New Urbanism, and interpreted by planners trained in that discipline, would reduce public conflict over development. Several events got in the way of this utopian goal. Most significantly, Duany’s “Smart Code” was never adopted by the City Commission. Instead, the new downtown code was written by a member of the city’s Planning Department, interpreting Duany’s vision. The result is an inconsistent and somewhat fractured application of New Urbanism.

The flaws in the zoning code have become obvious recently as the city is being built-out with tiny sidewalks, loss of green space, massive buildings and blank walls. City staff has no choice but to approve applications that adhere to the code.

There is little or no opportunity for the public to weigh in effectively on a project until after it is approved — in which case, there are only 10 days to mount an organized appeal.

There were years when the downtown was desperate for development, and in return the city promised various incentives to developers. Now the downtown is a desirable area in which to invest. If the city wants to continue to offer incentives, there should be identifiable public benefits attached — affordable housing, larger setbacks, green space — all coupled with changes in the zoning code to allow these amenities.

The challenge now is for our elected officials to take a de novo look at any and all incentives — maintaining or increasing the ones that provide a benefit, removing or improving those that do not. The summer budget season is a perfect opportunity.

Everyone would agree that Sarasota is a dynamic, growing city. Our fee structures and incentives should also be dynamic — monitored regularly and adjusted to reflect current conditions. To do otherwise is to sell the city short.

the field to greet our arriving guests as they get off the airplane, but I guess we’ll have to call that progress. That and the flood of high-rise hotels and condos.

In any event, each of those districts I noted above make up the heart of our city and should be represented in any discussion about Sarasota’s future. Together they can solve our problems and assure our future. Lose any one of them, and our diamond gets smaller.

I have read David Conway’s story “Defining Downtown” as well as a number of other stories related to this subject.

In 1977, I bought a condo on Longboat Key and a couple of years ago we moved to Sarasota. We purchased our condo on Longboat primarily because of the city of Sarasota. We fell in love with the city, the whole city not just downtown.

I think those seeking to define the downtown area of the city can’t see the forest because of the trees, so to speak.

If they start thinking of the city as a beautiful big diamond made up of a lot of 1 carat stones as I do, the solution to their dilemma should become obvious.

Lets call the jewel “Historic Sarasota” or any other name you want to attach to it.

This jewel is made up from a lot of 1 carat diamonds. Lets call each 1 carat diamond a district.

The first district I see is the Bayfront, which while not defined on the map, would encompass all the land west of Tamiami Trail as far north as the park next to the Sarasota Bay Club and as far south as the Selby Gardens.

Number 2 is the Rosemary District.

Number 3 is the Main Street District.

Number 4 is the Palm Avenue District Number 5 is the Burns Court District.

Number 6 is the Towels Court District.

Number 7 is the Arts District (to be defined).

Number 8 is all the Keys, Longboat, Lido, Siesta and St. Armands.

This is the Sarasota I fell in love with. The only thing I left out is the small airport, SRQ. We can no longer walk out on

Use more fire-retardant building materials I am appalled to see woodframed multiple occupancy housing units under construction in the city of Sarasota, especially when we read about so many fire- and smokerelated deaths, the latest in London where there are so many deaths.

It is shocking that the code allows for construction utilizing less than the most fire retardant materials. To say the least, full disclosure of fire retardancy standards to potential occupants should be required. I hope our citizenry will pressure our governing commission to improve the building code. The current code is disgustingly unsafe!

“He has transformed Ringling and he has transformed all of Sarasota,” Ringling College President Larry Thompson said.

Goldstein did not balk. He leaned into his beneficiaries, demanding excellence from each.

“I obtained my first gift from him for the Ann and Alfred Goldstein Center,” Thompson remembered. “It wasn’t just me asking for a certain amount. We ended up entering into a negotiation. I thought I was a pretty good negotiator until I negotiated with Al.” His philanthropy was prolific and intentional. Goldstein never allowed organizations to become complacent. He was tough on them, compelling them to imagine more.

“He thinks way ahead of where an organization is and tries to push them, which is sometimes uncomfortable,” his wife, Jean Weidner Goldstein, said. “But when someone like that has confidence in you, you can attain many things.”

For Selby Gardens, that meant funding the Ann Goldstein Children’s Rainforest Garden, which laid the foundation to expand Selby’s audience to include children and families. And that led to the Alfred and Jean Goldstein Exhibition Series, which reinvigorated Selby’s membership.

He was “a game changer,” Laurey Stryker said.

would call Goldstein to thank him for his vision and relay how the children enjoyed the garden.

Goldstein already knew.

“He would say ‘Yeah I was there ... I went with my grandkids,’ ” Stryker said. “It was one of those relationships that was challenging but really beautiful.”

His gruff demeanor was juxtaposed with humor as dependable as his generosity.

Selby CEO Jennifer Rominiecki remembered telling him the next installment of the Alfred and Jean Goldstein Exhibition Series would be the work of Andy Warhol.

“He was Andy Warhol’s landlord,” Rominiecki said, recalling Goldstein’s days in real estate.

“He owned the original factory in

New York City. So apparently Mr. Warhol was behind on his rent and he offered Al a painting as payment. But Al thought he was asking to get the loft painted so he turned it down.”

He only realized his error when he relayed the story to his late wife, Ann Goldstein. She was dumbfounded.

“I always looked forward to seeing him, because he always made me laugh every time without fail,” Rominiecki said.

His legacy may be imposing, but his interactions with Sarasota’s philanthropic community were genuine, borne of a deep love for Sarasota and a dedication to see it thrive.

“He was somebody who was

interested in people,” said Iain Webb, director of the Sarasota Ballet. “It wasn’t just about putting a name somewhere. It was that he believed in something so he was going to commit to it.”

His generosity was not only an act of love for his community, but an expression of his love and appreciation for his family. The Children’s Rainforest Garden bears the name of his late wife, Ann Goldstein.

The next addition to Selby will bear the name of Weidner Goldstein, whom he married in 2012.

Their love grew from a friendship. Weidner Goldstein moved to Sarasota within a year of Goldstein and his then-wife Ann Goldstein.

She and her husband, Kenneth Weidner, became friends with the Goldsteins, buoyed by their mutual interests in the arts and boating.

After the death of their spouses, Weidner in 2003 and Ann Goldstein in 2011, Goldstein and Weidner Goldstein found support in each other.

It was a “nice, comfortable relationship,” Weidner Goldstein said.

They were partners, working together to further Goldstein’s mission — to see Sarasota reach its full potential.

In the end, Goldstein was satisfied.

“He was quite ready to leave, and his passing was gentle and quiet and a real gift to him and everybody else,” Weidner Goldstein said.

Shortly before he died, he told Weidner Goldstein, “Nobody could have done more, experienced more or had more than (I have) had.”

For those who knew him, Goldstein is not lost. His vision for Sarasota lives on.

“A lot of the conversations I had with him, he would say we need to find more people that are willing to invest in our community in a bigger way,” Stryker said. “I think he was always hoping that whatever he did would influence the next philanthropist in the community. I think it has. He set a bar that will make a difference.”

He is preceded in death by his wife of 63 years, Ann Goldstein. He is survived by his three children, Wendy Cohen, Steven Goldstein and Richard Goldstein, and his wife, Jean Weidner Goldstein.

A service was held June 28 at Temple Beth Sholom.

Trying to describe a band’s music today can be more complicated than it seems. A question as simple as “What kind of music do you play?” can easily result in an endless stream of hyphenated genres — and sub-genres — that can make even the most enthusiastic of music-lovers’ eyes glaze over.

And then there’s The Beat Down.

In a world of musical taxonomy, the Sarasota-based trio’s sound is refreshingly simple to describe.

It’s rock ’n’ roll. And, to borrow from Mick Jagger — I like it.

The Beat Down is Garrett Von Räd on guitar, Ryan O’Neill on drums and Justin Kaiser on bass and lead vocals — all three members sing. All prolific members of Sarasota original-music scene, Kaiser and O’Neill have played in various projects together since as long ago as the late 1990s.

Von Räd, who also plays in the Southern rock band Hail Dale, was a longtime fan of Kaiser and O’Neill’s music, and he hoped to combine their shared tastes in a project of their own.

But it wouldn’t happen until December 2016, when Kaiser, recently returned from a stint in Los Angeles, decided to organize a jam.

“We love that ’60s garage-rock sound. The original idea was that we would play covers of those bands — the Beatles, Small Faces, The Animals,” says Von Räd.

All three members are guitarists and songwriters in their own right, and after meeting up, it was apparent they would have no shortage of original material.

“We learned about six covers, and we decided to work on a few songs Ryan had written,” he says.

“We had a handful of originals come together almost right away.”

The members say there are no hard and fast rules in their writing, but they operate under one guiding principle: They want to play rock ’n’ roll, pure and simple.

“Five years ago, there were probably 15 or more bands playing original rock,” says Kaiser. “The rock ’n’ roll and psychedelic scene was a lot more active. We want to keep that alive and show people it’s still happening here in Sarasota. It’s kind of a good barometer of any local music scene — you check out the local original rock bands.”

“I like knowing where stuff began,” says Kaiser. “Every riff has been ripped off from something — and those were ripped off from somebody who came before them. It’s like carrying the torch.

Nobody around here was doing anything like that, and I think it’s important to keep those roots alive.”

’60s, and his driving, danceable backbeats are straight out of the playbooks of the founding fathers of rock drumming.

Von Räd is an outspoken vintage analog-gear enthusiast, playing through decades-old vacuumtube-powered amplifiers, outfitting his guitars with vintage electronics and preferring to record to tape, instead of digitally.

Kaiser’s bass guitar and tone similarly embody the aesthetic, and he says playing as a trio is also a good fit for the music.

“It’s minimalist,” he says. “I love to get the most sound out of the least amount of instruments.”

Perhaps the best way to experience the band is at a live performance. It’s loud, high-energy — and there’s plenty of people on

the dance floor. It’s a throwback that doesn’t feel forced.

“I think we’re all so influenced by that music,” says O’Neill. “It’s what we all grew up listening to and gravitated toward, so it’s not necessarily a sound we’re consciously trying to create — it just happens organically.”

The band plans to record a fivetrack EP —analog, of course — to be released before the end of the year. But mostly, the band just hopes to keep rock music thriving in Sarasota.

“The spirit of rock ’n’ roll is still alive,” says Von Räd. “It’s cemented its place in American culture, and even around the world. The best way to keep it alive? Just keep playing it.”

opens with a fuzzy bassline, which is quickly joined by a pounding drumbeat and all three members singing together in harmonized, airy falsetto: “I want your love.”

The chorus, punctuated with a tremolo-heavy psychedelic organ line, is an instant sing-along, and the guitar solo that follows — a cutting, fuzz-drenched run that pans left and right — is equal parts trippy and swagger.

The Beat Down wears its influences on its sleeve.

The result is a melody-driven, rhythmic, high-energy blend of ’60s garage rock in the vein of The Yardbirds and early Rolling Stones, as well as the pioneers of the ’50s who inspired them — Chuck Berry, The Everly Brothers.

Fittingly, the lyrics are generally light, fun and relatable, with a catchy melody and beat that defies audiences not to dance.

Their first home-recorded single, “She Wanna Dance,” encapsulates the sound well.

Festival wraps with a delightful mix of sound Third portion of Sarasota Music Festival offers greatest contrast.

The closing weekend of the Sarasota Music Festival gave us a combination of music that was traditional, cutting-edge, and classical cross-over. Quite a mixture, to say the least.

Friday night’s offering presented the greatest contrast, starting with the “Wind Quintet, Opus 10,” of Pavel Haas, written in 1929. Although Haas was Czech and a student of Leos Janacek, at times there were hints of Kurt Weill, his German contemporary.

Mostly serious, except for the “Ballo eccentric” third movement, with piccolo and E-flat clarinet, it was given a thoughtful and moving performance by Carol Wincenc, flute, Stephen Taylor, oboe, Charlie Neidich, clarinet, William Purvis, horn, and Frank Morelli, bassoon.

Robert Schumann’s “Piano Quartet in E-flat major,” written during his chamber music

year of 1842, wound up being the “oldest” work of the weekend. Written in his full romantic and sweeping style, with a few Mendelssohn-like moments in the scherzo, it was beautifully performed by Jeffrey Kahane, piano, Frank Almond, violin, Barbara Westphal, viola, and Brinton Smith, cello.

The balance of the evening featured yMusic, a chamber group of young performers from New York, in a set of works as different and somewhat perplexing as the makeup of the group itself. The combination of flute, clarinet, trumpet, violin, viola, and cello is far from traditional, and so was their music. The seven works they performed, although by different composers, sounded vaguely alike, with combinations of sounds and effects, usually starting quietly, building to a shattering climax, and ending quietly. More variety would have been welcome, but their appearance gives evidence that the festival is expanding its reach in the experience it provides for both students and audience. It was a musical stretch and not to everyone’s taste, but was an important

It’s difficult to believe that Samuel Barber’s “Adagio for Strings” (1936) was once considered to be adventurous, with its slow moving themes and resolving dissonant harmonies, but it was. Originally a movement for string quartet, this adagio has been arranged for many combinations, including a choral setting. The festival strings, all standing (except for the cellos) gave a glorious performance, bringing goosebumps and a few tears of joy at the beauty of sound and melody.

Beginning with a crack of the slap-stick, Maurice Ravel’s “Piano Concerto in G-major” takes us into this Frenchman’s version of George Gershwin’s New York jazz. Filled with “blue notes” and “flatted fifths,” together with Ravel’s brilliant pianism and orchestration, this

work is something of a tour de force for both orchestra and soloist, especially when the soloist is also the conductor.

Kahane performed both roles brilliantly, especially the quiet and contemplative second movement, which in contrast to the Big City excitement of the first and third, is virtually a nocturne in its melodic simplicity.

Timo Andres’ “Paraphrase on themes of Brian Eno,” is odd in that it is one contemporary composer’s reflections on the work of another. Ambient and collage are two adjectives used for Eno’s music, and Andres’ musings are just that, providing sounds evoking vast reaches of space, then strikingly romantic phrases sounding like movie underscoring; all reasonably tonal, and yes, ambling along a little bit. Andres uses a steel drum, that pillar of Caribbean

calypso, as a new voice and texture, again providing more collage and ambience.

Gershwin and Ravel influenced each other, and both gained from that influence, with Gershwin’s “Rhapsody in Blue” preceding the Ravel “Concerto” by several years.

Kahane, again conducting from the piano, chose the original Paul Whitman “jazz band” version, orchestrated by Ferde Grofé, replete with saxophones, brass, and tuba. Almost as evident as the soloist was clarinetist Charlie Neidich, who from his opening glissando set the mood for this rousing and energetic performance. At times the execution was more enthusiastic than accurate, but clearly everyone was having a good time with this cross-over classic, especially the audience, which responded with shouts, bravos, and applause.

Returning for several bows, and acknowledging everyone in the orchestra, Kahane ended the concert and the festival with a quiet, respectful and very moving improvisation on “America the Beautiful.”

“It always meant a great deal to her,” he says. “She was doing Music Mondays and writing for the Observer among other things, but she was still a singer at heart.”

Alley says that, along with bringing Holt on board as artistic director, LeBell’s legacy within the organization was making the group of professional singers a professional organization. She gave it the visibility it has now, he says.

This year’s concert will feature the group’s traditional salute to the armed forces along with a tribute to the heroes of World War I and World War II and a new musical setting of the Gettysburg Address. Holt is also excited about the traditional Bach chorale that will be performed with words

by Pete Seeger, along with a pairing of “My Country Tis of Thee” with “Lift Every Voice and Sing,” arranged by Moses Hogan.

Holt says his goal is to remind locals why we unite on the Fourth of July.

“I felt like this year, considering the seeming divisiveness that we have in our country, we needed to have more of an underscore of who we are, where we come from and why we all do this together,” Holt says. “It makes no difference whether you’re white, black, red, green — we all do this because we believe in this.”

There will be one fewer audience member at Choral Artists of Sarasota’s annual Fourth of July concert this year.

June LeBell, former singer, board member and executive director of the organization, died April 30 of ovarian cancer.

It was LeBell who came up with the idea for the first Independence Day concert in 2007, so the group decided to dedicate this performance, Voices of Freedom, to her.

“June was kind of insistent that we maintain this tradition of the Fourth of July, and I agreed with her,” Artistic Director Joseph Holt says. “It seemed only right to dedicate this performance in her honor and in her memory because she meant so much to this organization.”

When he talks about LeBell, a wide, unwavering smile crosses Holt’s face. His eyes are distant, caught up in memories, as he speaks of her sense of humor and how she was always eager to help people — especially other singers.

He changes direction midsentence when a memory from a Fourth of July performance a few years ago comes back to him. He recalls a concert in which LeBell and her husband, Edward Alley, did a narration — set to music, with the chorus singing softly in the background — of quotes from several American presidents.

“It was a wonderful experience to be up there on stage with the two of them,” Holt remembers.

“One on either side of me, as the chorus is singing and they’re giving these great orations. Obviously June was a natural. She could talk anywhere anytime.”

This year, Alley will take the stage again to do a narration for the Voices of Freedom concert.

Holt says it will be about 9/11 and instead of being a reflection on a "horrific moment" in American history, it’s about the heroes who emerged in the aftermath.

O

n the morning of June 27, there was a game of catch held at Ed Smith Stadium.

Batting practice, too, off a tee. Base-running drills were performed. Grounders were fielded.

The drills were routine. The participants were not.

That’s because the Baltimore Orioles welcomed students from Sarasota’s Oak Park School to spend the morning with them.

Oak Park School is the school for people with special needs in the Sarasota County School District, serving students from preK to age 22.

The clinic was not the first partnership between the school and the club. During the school year, for the first time, Oak Park students participated in the Orioles Health and Fitness Challenge, a program developed by Orioles’ trainers, HealthFit Powered by Sarasota Memorial Hospital and Students Working Against Tobacco. The program has always focused on physical fitness, but expanded this year to emphasize nutrition and tobacco-free living, according to the Orioles’ website.

When the students arrived at Ed Smith Stadium, they each received a team T-shirt and a hat, and were greeted by David Rovine, the vice president of Orioles-Sarasota.

“This is tremendously rewarding, Rovine said. “These kids don’t have this opportunity. To be able to reach out to Oak Park, it was something we worked with through the school system last year and came to fruition this past season. It’s going to be a constant because of the return we’re getting. You can see it in our players’ faces that they’re having a great time.”

Those players included pitcher Branden Kline, a second-round draft pick in 2012 who hasn’t pitched in a game since having

Kline was at the Orioles’ AA affiliate, the Bowie Baysox in Maryland, when he had the surgery.

As he’s gone through the rehab process, he’s tried to stay positive.

baseball,” Kline said. “You come out here with these kids who weren’t dealt the best hands, and they live every day to the fullest.

They are always happy, they are always smiling.”

Kline worked the base-running station. He ran with the students, encouraging them to finish strong and run through the bag, and he held the hands of kids who were nervous to run.

The Frederick, Md., native remembers participating in the Keys for Reading program when he was young, with his hometown Frederick Keys, the Orioles’ A+affiliate. He got to walk around the diamond before a game. He saw future Cy Young award winner Jake Arrieta then, and previously had seen longtime Oriole Nick Markakis in the outfielder’s first season with the Keys.

Lily Schultz was one of the students participating. Her favorite part of the day was getting to throw the ball. Schultz laughed as she recalled the morning’s activities. She threw it high and far sometimes, she said, so the players had to jump to make the catch.

It was a good day, she said, and a lot of fun, even though it was hot.

Highly structured classrooms with visual supports address and monitor progress. n The DAT (Developmental Assistive Technology) team is students in K-12th grade with severe intellectual disabilities. Many DAT students receive nursing services and require assistive technology to access the curriculum.

For three weeks, I’ll examine a staple bar game that is played locally. I’ll talk to some Sarasotans to get outside opinions, and I might even inject some of my own.

To be clear, the debate is not which game is the most fun.

It’s which game works best in a bar setting. After the three weeks are done, an online poll will give readers a chance to vote for their favorite. Last week: Pool.

esearch into the second bar game in our summer series resulted in me getting heckled.

Ultimately, that has nothing to do with anything. I just feel like you all should know.

The heckling was over the literal name of the game. When I walked into Old School Bar and Grill on June 27, a crowd was cheering while participants launched a small sack through the air, trying to land it inside a hole in a wooden base from 40 feet away.

I’m being purposefully deliberate in my wording, here.

You probably know the game to which I’m referring. When I asked a group of bar patrons what they like about the game, I called it “bean bag toss,” because I’m from the mid-Atlantic.

I should have known better from my Missouri days, but I didn’t. Sarasota’s Shane Swezey called me out on my dialect.

“Bean bag toss,” he muttered, eyes turned away from me in disgust, head shaking in disbelief. “We don’t desecrate the game like that. It’s cornhole.”

This was said in a joking manner (I think), but Swezey was serious about the game itself.

Like last week’s bar game, pool, there are many variations

to play. The most common, from both personal experience and from talking to patrons, is two on two, played outside. In that setting, players should stand 30 feet from the hole, according to American Cornhole Association, which I promise is a real thing.

They have a website and everything.

The holes themselves are 6 inches in diameter. A shot that lands in the hole is worth 3 points. A shot that lands on the board, but does not fall in the hole, is 1 point. Teams can knock their opponents’ bags off the board with bags of their own.

Conversely, they can also knock opposing bags into the hole.

There are more rules, but I won’t bore you with them.

Old School used to use the standard format, but decided to move the boards inside and increase the distance. It’s now an individual game. Each Tuesday night, there’s a competition to see if anyone can sink a shot on their first try. If someone can, that person wins $100 in cash.

If a full round goes by with no winner, another round is played, but the reward drops to a bottle of liquor.

No one went home $100 richer on the 27th, but Swezey did earn himself a bottle of Cruzan.

The game looks simple, but Gabe Hernandez said it’s harder than it looks, especially indoors.

CAR HOLE 8 p.m. — 700 block of Flint River Court Property damage: The property manager of an apartment building wanted to report property damage for insurance purposes.

ENTER AT YOUR OWN PERIL 11:28 p.m. — 4000 block of North Tamiami Trail Burglary: The owner of a motel reported that a tenant had recently been arrested, and that the hotel emptied his room after he did not pay the previous month’s rent. Now, the owner said, the former tenant was attempting to enter a locked, fenced area in the rear of the property. Workers at the hotel stopped him, but the former tenant refused to leave the property.

An officer told the former tenant that he had been evicted from the property, and that he would be able to get his possessions but he would have to leave immediately afterward. The former tenant said he could not carry all his belongings, and that he would have to make arrangements to pick them up later. The motel owner said the former tenant could not pick up the property without a police officer present.

Later that night, the former tenant was found inside the locked, fenced area on the property. An officer saw him attempt to remove a bike from inside. The motel owner said nothing inside the fenced area belonged to the former tenant. The former tenant was arrested and charged with burglary.

Westcoast Black Theatre Troupe's new production honors the black performers who made history on Broadway.

N

ate Jacobs fell in love with Broadway without seeing a single show.

It wasn’t a magical trip to New York City or the show-stopping voice of Jennifer Holliday commanding the radio that ignited the love affair. Jacobs, artistic director and founder of Westcoast Black Theatre Troupe, fell hard for Broadway by listening to his brother’s rave reviews of “Dreamgirls” and other shows he saw on the Great White Way. “I didn’t know I had a theater company living inside me at the time,” Jacobs says. “Of course, now it’s really clear why those reports from my brother’s phone calls excited me the way they did.”

Now, more than three decades later, Jacobs is sharing his love for America’s most beloved theater district with his latest original WBTT production, “Broadway in Black.”

The show was inspired by a children’s theater piece of the same name that he created some 15 years ago. That show was a youth revue, but this time around, he wanted to create a fullfledged professional production that honored the award-winning shows and performers who opened the door for black artists on Broadway.

What resulted is a cast of 13 and a three-piece band that will work together to perform nearly 50 songs — some in their entirety, some in snippets, and others in medleys — that are considered legendary pieces performed by black Broadway stars.

Jacobs says this show carries a meaning that is deeply personal for him and his cast. He notes that black characters were played by white performers in blackface until the early 1900s. It wasn’t until 1910 that the first black performer was considered an equal alongside his white counterparts.

That’s when Bert Williams took the stage on Broadway in “The Ziegfeld Follies.”

He says because they’re paying homage to the artists who paved the way for black performers on Broadway and elsewhere, he expects excellence from his cast.

“All these artists studied and worked hard and prayed and cried and scratched and crawled to get up the ladder, so you step out and represent them well,” he tells his cast. “I’m not going to accept anything less than that. I want your best.”

by performing some of the most difficult songs they’ve ever been assigned.

Jacobs says he could see many cast members “shaking their knees” when he handed them their music, but he’s proud of his cast for committing to the challenge of giving audiences a dynamic theater experience that he calls a “show within a show.”

“We go from deeply moving moments to high spirited, over-the-top moments to hot and sizzling moments, and it's like watching the whole strip of Broadway in one evening,” Jacobs says.

Audience members can expect to hear songs from older classic musicals such as “Cabin in the Sky,” “Porgy and Bess” and “The Wiz” as well as more recent favorites from shows such as “Ragtime,” “Dreamgirls” and “Once on this Island.”

Cast member Michael Mendez has been with WBTT for six years, but this show has a different feel than the others he’s been in.

Usually the performers learn the music before they begin choreography, but for “Broadway in Black,” they’ve learned both simultaneously, which Mendez says has taken them to a “different level in the show process.”

He also feels a sense of responsibility to pay respect to the black performers who helped him get to where he is today.

“Being the only black theater in a large radius, we are stewards of black history in a sense, whether we want to be or not,” he says. “So we have to keep our history alive by not only paying homage to what was done but also what will be done for future playwrights.”

Jacobs says the goal is not only to honor Broadway idols, but to honor the larger narrative of black people in the United States.

“The purpose of the theater, especially the black theater, is to keep history and stories alive,” Jacobs says. “If we don’t keep our history — our stories, our culture, our uniqueness — alive and propagate it throughout the generations, then it dies.”

For Jacobs, this purpose is particularly personal. Part of his heart will always be on Broadway.

Teresa Stanley, an original member of WBTT who Jacobs mentored from childhood, left the troupe in 2007 to perform in “The Color Purple” on Broadway.

When Jacobs’ friend flew him to New York City to see her perform, he cried the entire show.

Stanley took him behind the curtain after the show and pulled him onstage. They looked out into the empty theater and she uttered three words so powerful, they’ve stayed with him.

“You’re on Broadway,” she said.

Kids sculpt summer fun on Siesta

S

arasota County Parks, Recreation and Natural Resources campers had a busy day June 22. They were joined by a turtle, starfish and even Pikachu — well, in a way.

After a week of preparation, participants in the county’s sand sculpting camp put their sand skills to the test creating sculptures of their choosing.

Inspired by printed photos or their own hand-drawn pictures, campers went to work sculpting on the last day of the camp.

Animals were among the most popular choices followed closely by the traditional sand castle.

“When they started on Monday they couldn’t do anything,” camp teacher Bill Knight said. “Now look what they’re doing.”

Knight, along with camp counselor Susan Moriarty, kept a careful eye on the sand sculpting proteges as they packed, scraped and sculpted their sand creations. But the pair weren’t worried about the campers progress.

“Of course if they mess it up they can just take it down and start again,” Moriarty said.

Booker High School Principal Rachel Shelley is Florida’s 2017 Principal of the Year.

master’s and doctorate degrees.

Yet, more than her own success, Shelley points to that of her children as evidence of education’s power to affect one’s trajectory.

Her son graduated from Riverview High School, attended West Point and is now serving in the Army. Her daughter graduated Pine View High School and was accepted to Cornell University.

“When I think about that, and I think about where I have come from, how can I not recognize the importance (of education,)” Shelley said.

But Shelley dreams of success for all 1,200 of her children — the students of Booker High School.

She and her staff work tirelessly to help students realize they’re capable of more than a high school diploma.

Her goal is simple — that every student leave Booker High School with a post-secondary plan.

To meet that end, she and her staff run a tight operation. They have meetings at 6:30 a.m. four days a week. They track data points and watched as the percentage of students completing the Free Application for Federal

Student Aid rose from 35% to almost 60% during Shelley’s tenure at Booker.

They have introduced a fouryear college readiness course beginning in ninth grade and have watched as the number of freshmen who finish with a GPA more than 2.0 has increased to 60%.

But Booker High School is more than data. It’s 1,200 students, each of whom Shelley is personally invested in. She pokes her head into classrooms and offices to say hello to a student as she walks by. She makes sure each of her students, regardless of where they fall in the data, are nurtured.

“My true satisfaction comes not always through the mundane data of school grades and such,” Shelley said. “I recognize the importance, but the school grade doesn’t change the kids lives.”

Although she stands humbled by her most recent honor, her vision hasn’t changed.

“At the end of the day when you change a student, you change a family,” Shelley said. “When you change a family, you change the community. When you change a community, you change society.”

Booker High School Principal Rachel Shelley has three loves — her husband, her children and Booker High School.

She took over leadership of the school 2011 and has since refocused its collective attention to ensure her students are prepared for college and career. On June 21, the Florida Department of Education honored her effort, naming Shelley Florida’s Principal of the Year.

“I was absolutely shocked,” Shelley said. “I was sitting there, and I heard the name and it took me a couple of seconds to realize they called my name.”

Shelley graduated from Riverview High School in 1984. She began her teaching career in Sarasota County in 1989, later working at Riverview High School and the former Phoenix Academy.

But Shelley said she never wanted to lead Booker High.

“I believe at the time they were only looking for an AfricanAmerican to be the principal of Booker High School, and honestly I wanted no part of it for that reason only,” Shelley said. “I want to be identified and selected for my ability, not the color of my skin.”

She declined to apply for the position. But three days before the posting closed, she had a change of heart.

“I was told I was the best applicant they have had in a long time,” Shelley said. “I realized then that it was meant for me to be at Booker High School.”

Shelley began to see her own experiences mirrored in her students. She grew up in Sarasota’s low-income housing, graduating from high school at 16 years old.

Despite her expedited high school performance, nobody identified her potential. Nobody encouraged her to take dual-enrollment or advanced-placement classes or apply for college.

It took a nudge from a friend for Shelley to consider college. She graduated from Bethune-Cookman University, later earning

When vibrant fireworks light up the night sky on the Fourth of July, it’s hard not to bask in their glory.

The bright colors and loud booms are enough to keep any human alert, but those same sights and sounds could bother the acoustically sensitive dolphins underwater and can scare black skimmers and make them fly away from their chicks.

“The biggest issue for us, especially on that busy weekend, is there’s stress both in water and on beaches,” Director of Mote Marine Laboratory’s Stranding Investigations Program Gretchen Lovewell said.

The Fourth of July is a day of celebration, but to make sure marine life goes unharmed, local animal experts have a few reminders for beachgoers and boaters.

“Leave only footprints in the sand, and leave it cleaner than you found it,” Vice President of the Longboat Key Turtle Watch Cyndi Seamon said.

As of June 24, Longboat Key was home to 728 sea turtle nests.

October, so it’s still important for mother turtles to have a clear path on the beach.

“It’s great to have fun, take everything out and dig holes and play in the sand, but fill up those holes before you leave the beach,” Seamon said.

At the end of the day, pack up all your beach toys and furniture.

Seamon said the Turtle Watch group has seen a lot of chairs and tent skeletons left out overnight and those could get in the way of a mother turtle or hatchlings.

Also, be mindful of flashlight use.

Should hatchlings start making their way to the water, they need to follow the moon’s light, not a flashlight that will lead them farther from the Gulf of Mexico.

And turtles aren’t the only ones that use the beach. Longboat Key is home to at least 160 tern birds and about 20 chicks. It’s rare to

walk on Lido Beach and not make a feathered friend. With a black skimmer colony of 700, and 226 chicks and counting, it’s almost impossible not to run into them across from the Holiday Inn. Coincidentally, the hatched chicks will be learning to fly right around July. Gregory Taylor, shorebird project coordinator of Audubon Florida, said for that reason, it’s important that people don’t run through the birds.

More importantly, adult skimmers with chicks shouldn’t be prompted to fly away. Drones and kites are two things that scare skimmers.

“That drives birds crazy,” Taylor said. “They get scared, they fly off and that leaves the chicks and eggs vulnerable to things like heat and predators.”

Taylor also reminds people to not pick up a stray bird. If a bird

is alone, it doesn’t necessarily mean it’s lost. He suggests taking a picture of the bird and showing it to a lifeguard first before taking any action.

And just because an animal is underwater, doesn’t mean it’s out of harm’s way.

“One of the best, easiest things people can do is wear polarized glasses so that they can see through the water as well as making sure they throw away trash and fishing line,” Lovewell said.

Lovewell warns people to not feed or water animals and to be mindful of speed zones.

“As of last week, we had 12 new babies born to Sarasota Bay dolphin mothers, so just being really cautious and careful of those. The newborn babies often lack skills to avoid boats and may surface more frequently and that can put them at a greater risk,” she said.
