Birthday babe Sarasota resident Renée Sheade celebrated her 80th birthday May 17 at a luncheon organized by good friend Dottie Baer Garner at Michael’s On East. In true Sheade fashion, she announced, “OK girls now it’s time to listen to me talk.” But the birthday girl instead went around the room and talked about each girlfriend guest and how much their friendship meant to her.

Preschool gets a new name Temple Emanu-El’s preschool is nameless no more. The preschool, previously known as Temple Emanu-El’s Early Learning Center, has been formally dedicated and named for former temple member Susan Schwaid at a ceremony May 25. “Susan said to me once ‘When I go, I want everybody to know I was Jewish,’” Harvey Schwaid said of his late wife. “She was looking at the obit column and always saw people going to churches. This is one way of telling the community that yes, Susan. They know you’re Jewish.”
