The County Commission voted to take the next steps toward levying a 5% public service tax on utilities for fiscal year 2018, in an effort to keep the budget balanced without raising the millage rate. But even with the new tax, it will not be enough money that the county could begin building its reserves again.

The tax would be levied on electricity, water and gas for customers in unincorporated areas of the county.

If approved in September after public hearings, the tax would raise more than $5 million in 2017, and about $11 million in the following years.

A discussion on how to find Sarasota County’s next administrator ended quickly Monday when commissioners agreed on an internal candidate to serve in an interim role.

VISIT SARASOTA STICKS WITH VISIT FLORIDA In the wake of new, state-approved regulations governing Visit Florida, a dozen local tourism groups — including ones in Tampa, Miami and Orlando — have ended advertising partnerships with the state tourism agency.

One group that didn’t break up with Visit Florida? Visit Sarasota.

Visit Sarasota President Virginia Haley said those tourism groups didn’t permanently end their partnership with Visit Florida.

Instead, they’re waiting to get more information on how the new regulations will affect local tourism agencies.

Specifically, Haley said, groups are concerned about disclosure requirements that include mandates to provide information about things like board member salaries and the expenditure of privately donated funds. This isn’t an issue for Visit Sarasota, because the group voluntarily operates in compliance with state public records laws.

“For us, to comply is what we were doing already,” Haley said.

Haley said the continued strength of Visit Florida is important for local tourism agencies to succeed. Although Visit Sarasota has a promotional budget of nearly $7 million, she said Visit Florida lays the groundwork to lure visitors to the state.

“We can’t hope to compete by ourselves against California, Michigan, New York — all these other destinations with a powerful voice,” Haley said.

“We need that power of Visit Florida.”

t’s not a new story: Tourists love coming to Sarasota, and the numbers prove it. Every month, Visit Sarasota releases tourism numbers and almost every month, they top the same month of the previous year.

It’s a trend that’s been going on since 2011.

In June alone, there was an 8% increase in visitors staying in hotel rooms in the county over June 2016. However, the average annual increase per month is starting to hover more around 1% or 2%. Those tourism numbers don’t capture visitors who stay in private homes and don’t pay room-related tourist taxes.

Each year that Visit Sarasota reports an increase in visitors, the question of a tourism ceiling arises: Will there ever officially be too many tourists?

Visit Sarasota County President Virginia Haley isn’t too worried.

“I don’t think you do get to that point, because what we do is we smartly manage our messaging and who we target to come here,” Haley said.

For example, some tourists are right for the nation’s No. 1-ranked beach on Siesta Key, while others are a better fit for “elegant, refined Longboat Key,” Haley said. Some tourists are better for the shark’s tooth capital of the world in Venice, and others would come to Sarasota only for the World Rowing Championship, which is in September.

And with more than 1,000 new hotel rooms coming to downtown Sarasota by 2018, Haley said her staff is focusing on attracting people to host more small meetings or sporting events in the county to fill those rooms.

Haley said although it’s unlikely, if the county ever did get to a point where there were too many visitors, ending advertisements would not be a solution. Visit Sarasota operates with a roughly $7 million promotional budget.

“There are some communities that made decisions to stop marketing … and it did not work out well,” Haley said. “Because you still have the same number

of people coming, they don’t go away. But when you stop marketing, other places take your good customers.”

Essentially, Visit Sarasota’s job isn’t about attracting people here — it’s about attracting the types of people here that the county would most benefit from.

Again, the question of having too many people coming to the county has been raised with regard to the Siesta Key area.

With three new hotels proposed — at the Siesta Promenade, on Siesta Key itself and on Tamiami Trail near the south bridge — that would bring more than 200 hotel rooms to the area if they’re built.

Residents are concerned about the number of people it will draw to the often-congested area.

Lourdes Ramirez, a resident and former County Commission candidate, said the best thing to do is drive traffic to the area offseason. She doesn’t think new hotels are the answer, and is concerned about ultimately driving people away from the Siesta Key area that could develop a reputation for having terrible traffic.

“It’s actually gotten to the point where some businesses are hurting — people who want to shop there are avoiding the area,” she said. “We’re just shooting ourselves in the foot.”

But Haley said it’s hard to tell if those hotels, or the seven new hotels that are already in the building phases downtown, will draw new attention, or existing tourists will simply shift their attention toward those hotels.

Mason Tush, owner of CB Saltwater Outfitter’s on Siesta Key, said while congestion is always a concern, more tourists are good for business.

“Added hotels and added tourism to this town will help a lot of tourism-driven businesses,” he said.

Despite the uncertainty, one thing is for sure — Visit Sarasota will have a say in helping new hotels be successful.

“In order to be successful, we are going to have to create new demand to fill all those rooms,” Haley said.

AN UPDATE ON THE SIESTA-AREA HOTELS CURRENTLY IN PLANNING SIESTA PROMENADE The 130-room hotel planned as part of a mixed-use project at Stickney Point Road and U.S. 41 is in limbo. Benderson Development is seeking to increase the density allowed on the property to get the number of rooms the company seeks. Going through the process of getting an exception for the density requirement could take the developer until December or later.

HOTEL ON SIESTA KEY Gary Kompothecras wants to build a hotel on Siesta Key. He and his attorney are talking with the county to clarify regulations on height and setback from the road. Until those points are clarified, Kompothecras has no plan for the hotel, but his attorney said it will be a “well-designed, compatible, boutique hotel.”

HAMPTON INN ON SOUTH TAMIAMI TRAIL This hotel is early in the planning stages, but the developer, Peachtree Hotel Group, has tentatively planned for it to carry the Hampton Inn flag. The developer met with the Development Review Committee Aug. 17 to learn about the next steps, and learned it will face the same density requirement in question with the Siesta Promenade plans.

Peachtree Group was hoping for 100 rooms, but with the plot of land it owns on South Tamiami Trail, county ordinances allow about 60. It’s now up to the developer to decide if that’s enough, if more land is needed or if it wants to seek an exception.

City approves downtown high-rise condo request

Does a planned 18-story condominium building along U.S. 41 that extends over a public alley represent a “public benefit?”

That question divided the City Commission, which ultimately voted 3-2 on Monday to approve a developer’s proposed encroachment above a segment of public land.

The project in question is BLVD Sarasota, an 18-story, 49-unit condominium building at U.S. 41 and Boulevard of the Arts. Core Development Inc. owns properties on both sides of an alley that bisects the proposed project site.

As a result, Core Development asked the city to approve an encroachment agreement that would allow the company to build in the air above the alley.

The project would leave enough room for emergency vehicles to continue using the alley, but the planned design linked the properties on either side of the alley.

City Planning Director Steve Cover argued that, because the developer was deriving a benefit from building over the alley, the city was in a position to ask the developer to provide benefits for the public. Cover singled out the design of the building along U.S. 41 as a potential area where the developer could refine its plans in exchange for approval.

“With what they’re proposing, we think it’s not going to be attractive at all,” Cover said.

Representatives for Core urged the commission to focus only on the details of the proposed encroachment agreement.

Because Core could build two 18-story towers on either side of the alley, they argued a more refined design encroaching over the alley was a public benefit.

Core Development President Kevin Daves said he agreed with residents who asked for wider sidewalks and other pedestrian-oriented features — but said city regulations prohibited other designs the company considered.

The board sided with Core, with commissioners stating they didn’t want restrict the developer based on design preferences.

n Aug. 14, City Manager Tom Barwin heard an appeal from barrier island residents lobbying for changes to U.S. 41 in hopes of improving the seasonal traffic congestion near the state highway’s intersections with

Gulfstream Avenue and Fruitville Road.

Barwin said he was sympathetic to their concerns, but he was dubious of a proposal to add a third northbound lane on U.S. 41 between Gulfstream and Fruitville. The city’s goal, he said, was enhancing pedestrian safety on the road. He didn’t think adding a sixth lane to that segment of U.S. 41 would help achieve that goal.

“All of this angst is understandable, but it really amounts to about 5% of the time,” Barwin said. “You don’t, I think, dramatically change the character of an urbanized downtown and create really irresponsible pedestrian

safety risks for 5% of the time.”

On Monday, however, the City Commission split with Barwin, voting unanimously to undertake a series of changes to the U.S. 41-Gulfstream-Fruitville road network. Those changes include a third northbound lane on U.S. 41, a third left-turn lane from eastbound Gulfstream onto U.S. 41 and a signalized pedestrian crosswalk near First Street and Ritz-Carlton Drive on U.S. 41.

The state would also reduce the speed limit along that segment of U.S. 41 from 40 mph to 35 mph.

Florida Department of Transportation officials, present at Monday’s commission meeting,

said the extra lane was necessary to offset the effects of the First Street crosswalk.

The state agency, which manages all three roads, framed the plan as a compromise that would improve pedestrian access across U.S. 41 while acknowledging the need to move cars along the road, especially in light of concerns brought forward by barrier island residents and business operators.

It’s unclear when the changes will go into effect, but FDOT District 1 Secretary L.K. Nandam said he hoped the new traffic configuration would be in place before the end of the year.

Commissioner Hagen Brody asked whether the installation of a pedestrian-activated crosswalk signal at First Street would offset the benefits of adding a third lane on U.S. 41.

City Engineer Alex DavisShaw said the pedestrian signals, known as hawk beacons, could be timed to space out any delays in traffic.

Still, the models FDOT officials shared Monday indicated the average peak-hour delay for cars traveling from eastbound Gulfstream to Fruitville Road would be twice as long with the proposed changes relative to the existing conditions — an average of 117 seconds versus 61 seconds currently.

Despite the lengthier delays, residents from Longboat Key, Lido Key, St. Armands Key and Bird Key appeared at Monday’s commission meeting to support the proposed changes.

area have struggled this year.

“We believe that this is because people came to the Circle, shopped, ate, went to the beach, and when they left, they had to sit in a parking lot the whole time,” Vac said.

Longboat Key Mayor Terry Gans said the U.S. 41-Gulfstream intersection is a crucial access point for people traveling to and from the town. He asked the city to consider its neighbors and prioritize addressing congestion in the area.

“The thinking is, more lanes move more traffic,” Gans said.

One Sarasota resident questioned whether the extra lane would actually reduce congestion — if the flow of traffic improves, would more drivers flood the roadway until it again grinds to a halt?

Nandam argued that wouldn’t be the case, because the congestion is linked to differing traffic conditions in and out of season, rather than overall growth in the area.

Even with the changes, Nandam said driving along Gulfstream and U.S. 41 during season wouldn’t become an appealing prospect.

The goal is simply to make it more manageable.

“When you’re trying to manage congestion, where is the room for more traffic?” Nandam said.

Although FDOT endorsed the redesign, Nandam made clear that the planned changes are, in essence, a placeholder until the state can install a roundabout at the U.S. 41-Gulfstream intersection in 2019.

“That’s what’s going to get you where you need to be,” Nandam said. “That’s what’s going to provide the balance.”

Siesta Drive safety campaign progresses Residents hope a reduced speed limit on a small segment of Siesta Drive is the first of many changes coming to the street.

For a day or two earlier this month, a group of residents on north Siesta Key were delighted to see a different version of Siesta Drive — a version those residents wished for, but weren’t certain they would ever experience.

The Florida Department of Transportation had posted new speed limit signs on Siesta Drive and Higel Avenue, between Osprey Avenue and Shell Road.

The maximum speed went from 40 mph to 30 mph. For those residents, engaged in a campaign to reduce crashes on Siesta Drive, achieving such a sweeping speed reduction just months after their work began was a coup.

And then, less than 72 hours after the signs went up, they were gone.

It was an error on the part of FDOT, those residents would later learn. The state meant to post the 30 mph signs around the intersection of Siesta and Higel, a little more than a mile west. State officials quickly singled out that small, curved stretch of roadway

as particularly problematic.

Whether any more changes are coming to Siesta Drive remains to be seen.

“We’re doing a new study now to look at that area,” FDOT spokesman Zach Burch said.

For the group of residents, which has named its campaign Make Siesta Drive Safer, the diminished scale of the reduced speed zone wasn’t a deflating blow. Instead, the group is headed into a public meeting Monday with a sense of optimism.

“We’re organized; we’re making strides; we’ve got a plan,” said Dee Reams, chairwoman of Make Siesta Drive Safer. “We just need for people to show their support.”

The origins of the Make Siesta Drive Safer campaign are tied to a fatal collision in April near Siesta and Higel, though resident frustration dates back more than three decades, Reams said. Some residents doubted the state would respond, but Reams and others living in the Bay Island neighborhood on north Siesta Key banded together to study the issue.

They pulled data for nearly 200 crashes in the area in the past five years. They went to state officials to share their findings.

In June, the group walked along Siesta Drive and pinpointed problem areas. A few jumped out: the Siesta-Higel curve, of course. The humpback bridge leading into the curve, over which drivers often speed. And the north bridge to

Siesta Key itself, one of the most common areas for crashes.

The group drafted an “ask letter” it sent to FDOT officials. The requests included a lower speed limit, crosswalks and barricades.

Reams said FDOT made clear that it would take time to implement any significant design changes on the state road. Still, officials were willing to talk with residents.

On Aug. 14, Make Siesta Drive Safer representatives and FDOT staff met on Siesta Drive. They walked the street, residents sharing concerns and FDOT shedding light on how any safety improvements might affect the road.

The group is excited to share what it has learned with residents Monday. Reams thinks, with good turnout, officials can get a better sense of just how many people care about safety on Siesta Drive.

Hearing from three or four concerned citizens is one thing. Seeing dozens at a meeting is another.

FDOT is studying the speed of traffic on Siesta Drive between Higel and U.S. 41. Burch said the state hopes to finish that study within six weeks, at which point officials will decide what step to take next.

In the meantime, Reams will rally community support in hopes of achieving even more than a lower speed limit.

“They need to know the community is behind us,” Reams said.

“FDOT needs to know. Community leaders need to know.”

City examines traffic-calming standards As more neighborhoods ask to slow down traffic, the city’s staff is devising a new system for judging the merit of the requests.

Rick Popino can’t understand why the city doesn’t think there’s a problem with speeding on his street.

For more than a year, Popino and other residents in the 1800 and 1900 blocks of Hyde Park Street have registered complaints about traffic in the area. The residential street sits just south of Hillview Street and the Southside Village commercial district. Popino said cars and trucks use Hyde Park as a cut-through from U.S. 41 to Osprey Avenue, avoiding the more heavily trafficked Hillview.

This comes with a spate of issues, he said. Drivers speed down the street and routinely run through a stop sign at Laurent Place. Even after the city posted flags atop the stop sign, the Sarasota Police Department issued 11 warnings and citations for traffic violations along the street during a day of enforcement in July.

“People know they can run stop signs, they can speed down the block and nobody’s going to do anything,” Popino said.

The results showed the area didn’t meet the city’s threshold, which came as a shock to residents.

Popino questioned the validity of the city’s study. He said it didn’t account for the presence of a day care facility on the street, even though the study is supposed to factor in the presence of a school. And if speeding alone doesn’t warrant city intervention, Popino said the level of cut-through traffic — including large trucks headed to Southside Village businesses — amplifies the problem.

“We’re just dumbfounded that the city doesn’t see this as an

issue,” Popino said.

Addressing Popino’s concerns, Deputy City Manager Marlon Brown reframed the severity of the issues on Hyde Park Street. He said city data showed two crashes on the street in the past decade, neither of which had to do with speeding or a driver running the stop sign.

Even if drivers don’t come to a complete stop at the stop sign, he argued that the sign — in conjunction with two speed bumps and on-street parking — does work to slow down traffic in the area.

“I understand what Dr. Popino is going through,” Brown said. “I

want to help him. But I can’t just do something that doesn’t comply with the data — because every single neighborhood in the city of Sarasota will be asking for the same treatment.”

Brown said the issues on Hyde Park mirror concerns in neighborhoods throughout the city.

Almost every neighborhood wants traffic calming, he said.

Hoping to establish objective criteria for deciding whether to fulfill those requests, the city instituted its traffic study system in the mid-2000s.

Today, Brown said, that system is admittedly arcane. City staff is in the process of reviewing and

revamping its regulations, hoping to do a better job of accounting for the severity of traffic issues in a given neighborhood. Staff members are examining the procedures in place in similar municipalities, and hope to report their findings to the City Commission within the next month for further action.

This may not provide much assurance for Popino and other Hyde Park Street residents, who have been advocating for changes since last summer. But Brown said waiting for traffic calming is the norm in the city. Even within the South Poinsettia Park neighborhood, which contains this segment of Hyde Park Street, other neighbors have been advocating for traffic calming elsewhere.

Popino argued the problem is particularly pressing on Hyde Park Street because of its proximity to major roads, a business district and Sarasota Memorial Hospital. Residents aren’t demanding anything in particular — just something significant enough to slow down cars further.

“There’s a continuum of solutions here, and all we got were the ... flags,” Popino said.

The deputy city manager isn’t making any promises, but he did say the city intends to re-evaluate the need for traffic calming on Hyde Park as soon as new procedures are in place.

“We want to revamp our process, see how Hyde Park falls into that criteria, and we’ll go from there,” Brown said.

BRING BACK MY COUNTRY What’s happening to the country we knew and loved? The best way to bring it back is to continue doing and teaching our loved ones to do the right thing, the right way, for the right reasons.

e cannot give up.

Every day, it seems, you hear your family members, friends and co-workers lament — with obvious angst and distress — the state of America.

Surely you’ve had the conversation: “What’s happening?

Where does this end up?”

Wrote a friend recently: “It is getting harder to recognize the country we grew up in. Like all societies, we have a history of conflict, but what does the future look like in the face of white nationalists battling leftwing, identity-politics extremists and an absence of moral leadership?”

Another: “Everywhere you turn, it seems we are ruled by the minority mob of the day, whether pulling down statues, preventing speakers at universities, Congress dysfunction …

Then the media pumping up these minorities to look like majorities. Nothing presented in real world perspective.”

Another told me he can’t bear to tune in to the national news.

It’s an endless carpet-bombing of strife, confrontation, destruction, dysfunction, hate, blood.

He said his wife, equally distressed, suggested the idea having dual citizenship in another country. “Why would she even think that?” he said.

Because she, like so many, are battle and war fatigued. Not because of the war on terror, but because of the social and political wars at home. We have neoNazi-, antifa-, Black Lives Matter-, fake news-, Washington, D.C. swamp-inflicted PTSD. What, indeed, has happened to the country in which we grew up? The country where we all stood at the beginning of the day, from elementary through high school, and recited the Pledge of Allegiance — “one nation, under God, indivisible, with liberty and justice for all”? The country where we learned English grammar, how to diagram sentences and write in cursive?

Where we learned manners, courtesy, respect and the Golden Rule? Where parents taught you to say “Yes, ma’am” and “No, ma’am” and “Yes, sir” and “No, sir”? Where sisters taught their younger brothers before their first high school dates: Always open the door for the lady?

Where our outlook was that we could do anything — reach the moon, Mars! — if we put our mind to it and worked? Where tattoos were practically taboo?

What happened?

In an interview with a Civil War scholar, the scholar noted that not since the Civil War has the national discord reached the level it is today. “We’re in a civil war,” a friend lamented, “we just don’t know it.”

Or we’re spiraling in that

direction ever faster.

Over the past 17 years we have seen what feels like and is unprecedented, visceral contempt for our presidents — Bush II, Obama and Trump, especially Trump. If you try dispassionately to observe the events coming out of the nation’s capital since Trump’s election, it’s difficult not to believe there is a concerted and orchestrated effort on both sides, and in the D.C. press, to thwart and topple Donald Trump. It’s more vicious than we’ve ever witnessed.

Sure, Trump doesn’t help himself. On Monday, he delivers a commanding speech befitting the president of the United States. On Tuesday, he goes off the teleprompter and the rails and falls back to street fighter mode — un-befitting of the president of the United States.

He has a compulsion to get in the last word, the last dig.

He’s not helping.

Neither are the national news media and social media. The national news media (it’s more like national opinion media) fuel the nation’s fissures with their 24-7 efforts to fill airtime.

They thrive on conflict and confrontation. People smashing windows and punching one another, and strident liberals and conservatives yelling at each other — they make great TV. They attract eyeballs. And these days the national news media are all about the eyeballs and clicks.

Newsrooms have monitors showing what stories generate website clicks; it’s all about the numbers. Americans with our smartphones are addicted to mainlining news.

This only aids and abets the nation’s strife. The fringe extremists and agitators crave attention. They love it when newsies show up with cameras and stick a microphone in front of their foul-mouthed mugs.

Social media enflames them even more. It’s the gas that spreads the hellfire. And there’s no turning back. Social media is engrained in our culture. It gives everyone a platform to be ugly, incendiary and spread their extremist, political venereal diseases at the speed of light.

All of this, at times, especially since Trump’s inauguration, has felt overwhelming, creating a feeling of helplessness.

We must turn the tide.

It’s difficult to think Donald Trump can do what Ronald Reagan did — provide the leadership that resurrects the America we know and love. But he issued a call Monday night that is a start.

They were his finest words (see The American Family).

To restore the America where we grew up, the silent majority; the law-abiding, patriotic Americans; the people who do what is right; the people who believe in the duty of good citizenship; the people who try to practice the Golden Rule, who live by the 10 Commandments and who pray must be steadfast and have faith. Continue to love and teach our children and grandchildren what is right.

Teach them the Marine code: To do the right thing, the right way, for the right reasons.

How we live our lives is the best way to end this strife.

Main Street movie theater to receive luxury makeover

The public offered few objections at an Aug. 16 workshop to the details of the city’s proposal to redesign Paul Thorpe Park and Lemon Avenue.

They did, however, offer one suggestion to city staff: Take swift action to improve the downtown park, located at Lemon and Pineapple Avenue.

The workshop was the third public meeting discussing a master plan for Paul Thorpe Park. The park, formerly called Pineapple Park, is known for a mermaid fountain that sits in its center.

The master plan would add more shade trees and seating, reorienting the layout to account for the park’s shrinking footprint during the past 25 years.

The plans call for a resurfaced Lemon Avenue between Main Street and Pineapple Avenue — possibly with bricks, to mirror the Lemon Avenue Mall north of Main Street. It would also remove the curbs between State Street and Pineapple Avenue to create a more pedestrian-friendly environment and better link the two segments of Paul Thorpe Park, which Lemon Avenue bisects.

Plaza. The 8.5-acre property at 1990 Main St. has more than 250,000 leasable square feet. The owners say they plan to consider new tenants next, with a focus on family entertainment.

BBC Main Plaza acquired the property for $18.1 million in late 2015. The group quickly announced a three-phase development plan, but the property has largely sat unchanged since, with multiple tenants departing.

The original three-phase plan called for refurbished retail properties along Main Street, a rehabilitated movie theater and possibly a new hotel, residential building or conference center on the north end of the site. Biter said the ownership group could not divulge more details about the next steps it would take until it had settled on tenants.

“We are working with a few potential tenants to figure out what will work best for the rest of the project,” Biter said in an email.

“There are more renovations in store, but we can’t yet say what they are.”

Regal Cinemas has renewed its lease for the Hollywood 20 movie theater on Main Street and committed to investing $3 million in renovations, the first signs of a long-term plan for Main Plaza under new ownership.

BBC Main Plaza, the ownership group composed of Sarasota entrepreneurs Eric Baird, Jesse Biter and David Chessler, announced the long-term lease agreement with Regal on Friday.

The group said the renovations to the theater would include “state of the art technology, luxury reclining leather chairs and a modern bar and lounge area.”

The improvements will reduce the number of screens at the theater from 20 to 11. Renovations could begin in early fall. It is unclear whether the theater will remain open during construction, Biter said.

Residents encouraged staff to prioritize the park segment of the project, a sentiment Parks and Recreation Director Jerry Fogle said he shared.

“If we have to do this in phases, the park is going to be the first phase,” Fogle said.

It is still unclear how the city will fund the improvements, if the City Commission chooses to adopt the master plan. Fogle and

RUMOR HAS IT Midnight — 1100 block of Gulfstream Avenue Battery: A man was leaving a hotel when an acquaintance walked up to him on his way out. The man said the acquaintance put his arm around him in a friendly manner and walked him over to the middle of the valet area.

The acquaintance then became aggressive, accusing the man of spreading lies that the acquaintance was charged with insurance fraud. The acquaintance said those rumors were hurting his business. The man said he had heard that rumor months ago, but hadn’t told anybody because he didn’t care. The man said the acquaintance started threatening him and then shoved him. The man shoved back, and then the acquaintance punched the man in his face.

A valet said it appeared the acquaintance was the aggressor.

After the acquaintance threw a punch, the man stepped back and began to remove the rings and jewelry from his hands, and the two men began fighting one another. After several minutes, hotel security broke up the fight.

The acquaintance left with a friend. The man wanted to press battery charges, but officers were unable to find any information regarding the acquaintance.

AUG. 19

SERVER ERROR 8 a.m. — 200 block of Benjamin Franklin Drive Dispute: A hotel manager contacted police to report an issue with a guest. The guest got into a dispute with the hotel’s breakfast servers that morning. She told police she did not feel safe staying at the hotel because of the dispute. The guest tried to flag down a server to hand in a coupon for a free breakfast, but the server said she would have to give it to the person who had been serving her during the meal. The guest insisted that the server could help her, because her server was busy. The guest said that server later walked by her and muttered “some people,” at which point the two got in a face-to-face argument.

The guest demanded the hotel send the server home and not let him back until she checked out of the hotel. The manager said he could not do that, but agreed to refund the cost of her breakfast, pay for one night of her stay and offered to check her into a nearby resort. The woman said she did not want to leave. The woman told police that she did not understand why the hotel couldn’t send the employee home. An officer told her businesses do not work that way. Later, the manager said he spoke with other guests in the dining area, who said the guest was being rude to all the servers.

AUG. 21

BROKEN LIMB 5 p.m. — 1200 block of Myrtle Street Dispute: A man said his neighbor came to his home three times in the previous two days. The neighbor told the man that a tree branch from his yard broke off and fell into her yard. The man said he would take care of it, but the neighbor checked in multiple times before he could remove the branch. Officers told the neighbor to give the man time before checking in on the branch.

W

hen real-life sailors find a hole in their ship, there’s only one thing they can do, and that is to plug it with whatever is handy.

If it’s a large hole, maybe two or even three items will be needed.

Whatever it takes to keep the ship afloat. That’s the most important thing, after all.

The Sarasota High Sailors have one of those holes, a quarterbacksized one, in their own ship. It’s metaphorical, but it will sink their season all the same if not patched. Peyton Jula, a transfer from Braden River High, was supposed to be their man under center, and started the Sailors’ spring game against Gulf Coast High. In mid-July, Jula transferred again, this time to Cardinal Mooney, and Sarasota was left scrambling.

The solution coach Brian Ryals picked, at least in part, was to play senior defensive back Tommie Battie IV at quarterback. Battie IV, who holds a scholarship offer from Eastern Michigan University, is a tremendous athlete, Ryals said, and the team will adjust its playbook to his strengths. That doesn’t mean he’ll solely be running the ball. Battie IV was 2-for-13 passing in the team’s preseason game against Palm Harbor University High. Those numbers alone don’t inspire confidence, but the number of passes thrown shows the team’s trust in his passing ability, and Ryals said those numbers aren’t indicative of Battie IV’s talent.

“He has to get used to it (playing quarterback), but we feel confident in him,” Ryals said.

Ryals likes opposing defenses having to account for the elusive Battie IV. It’s also likely that Battie IV will be one of a few players rotated in and out of the posi-

tion, including sophomore Vincent Parisi, who took snaps at the end of practice with Battie IV at wide receiver, yet another look designed to throw off defenses.

Between them in that formation, at running back, stood the reason Sarasota’s offense should be able to gain yardage no matter who takes the snap. It’s sophomore Brian Battie, Battie IV’s brother.

This is the first time the Battie brothers have played football

together. Last season, Brian spent the season on Braden River’s JV team, while Tommie played on the Pirates’ varsity team after two seasons with the Sailors. He decided to return for his senior season, to finish what he started.

“We want to come back after Friday nights and have the whole school love us,” Battie IV said.

Brian followed him. He didn’t think he’d get much playing time behind incumbent Braden River starter Deshaun Fenwick, a University of South Carolina commit.

At Sarasota, he’ll get plenty of carries, and he’s already making them count, rushing for 118 yards and a touchdown against Palm Harbor University. Lining up next to his brother in the backfield is an experience he didn’t expect when he became a Sailor.

The Battie boys do everything together, but mostly eat and work out. Their favorite place is Wings N Things, where they were headed Aug. 21 after practice. On Tuesdays, Thursdays and Sundays, they train together at Battie Fitness Training at Payne Park.

It’s run by their father, Tommie Battie III. The brothers hold a lot of responsibility on offense, but it’s the defense that will keep the Sailors in games until the offense clicks. Aside from Battie IV, who will retain his previous defensive back duties, Ryals is excited about junior cornerback Charles Ward, senior linebacker Mitch Nguyen and senior safety Avery Arnold, among others. The Sailors allowed a few big plays in the loss to Palm Harbor University, but Ryals knows they can be fixed through coaching.

Ultimately, Ryals said the Sailors will be successful if they “can become more consistent in everything we (the coaches) ask them to do,” and do those things with a winning attitude and passion.

Those last two can begin right away. The first one might take time. Until it happens, Sarasota has to hope it sealed that quarterback hole, and the Sailors can stay afloat in Class 7A-District 11.

When did you start cheerleading?

When I was 13 years old, eighth grade at Booker Middle. In seventh grade, I saw some friends do it and said, “Man, that looks fun!” The next year, I tried out and made it.

What is the appeal of cheerleading to you?

It’s the “Friday Night Lights” thing, being out on the field with everyone. It’s fun.

What is your best skill as a cheerleader?

I’m a base, so strength.

Do you have a favorite cheerleading memory?

Our homecoming pep rally when I was a sophomore, I’ll never forget it. We did a “Bring It On”-type battle, and it was so fun.

had messed up some in practice and didn’t want to mess up there, but I went. When they called my name, I was like, “Me?” It was a cool moment.

What is your favorite food?

Spaghetti with meatballs.

What is your favorite subject in school?

Math. It’s challenging, but once you get into the flow, it connects.

I like how you use it in real life, even when you’re not thinking about it.

What is the best piece of advice you have received?

My dance teacher (Courtney Smith) says to be in the moment.

Don’t think about yesterday or the next few hours. You need to be in the moment to do your best.

Riverview swimmers dream of a pinky ring Riverview High School boys swimming seniors prepare for journey toward unprecedented success.

R

iverview Rams swimmers Brett Riley, Brendan Firlie and Nico Hernandez-Tome are all seniors, and they are trying to accomplish something no senior class, no swimmer, in fact, has done in the history of Florida high school athletics.

Win four consecutive team state titles.

They remember the first one, they said, even though they were “little freshmen,” as HernandezTome said, and didn’t contribute as much as they would later. It had been 30 years since the Riverview boys nabbed a state title, but the team finished second the year before, so everyone knew the Rams had a chance. They knew about halfway through the state meet that they had the trophy on lock. The team had kept tally of all the finishes throughout the day. When the title was clinched, Firlie said everyone got “really hype.”

The boys’ sophomore season was much of the same. Last season, with the trio taking more responsibility, they were confident in themselves and their senior teammates, including Austin Katz, now at the University of Texas, and Keanan Dols, now at the University of

Pennsylvania. They won again, but Countryside High and star swimmer Robert Finke made it a closer competition.

Obviously, it would be an amazing accomplishment for the trio, but it would be just as amazing for the school itself and coach Brent Arckey, who also coaches the Sarasota YMCA Sharks swim club. All three Riverview swimmers also don the Sharks’ yellow caps, as do most of their teammates. It’s the perfect example of a “harmonious relationship” between club and school, said Eric Nelson, the Sharks’ assistant competitive swimming director and a volunteer Riverview assistant coach.

“It’s the most harmonious, symbiotic relationship in the state,” Nelson said of the Sharks and Rams. The Sharks are the

reason Riverview keeps winning titles. It’s a matter of what the swimmers do all year long. It’s a great opportunity for swimmers in the city to excel.

“It’s a very consistent, dayin-and-day-out commitment to excellence. It’s world-class level sophistication. That’s what sets us apart. We’re pretty tenacious about swimming.”

The Sharks won the Florida Age Group Long Course Championships in July, and are the dominant club of the area (and the state, really). Arckey, Sharks age group coach Sherwood Watts and others teach kids the fundamentals of swimming and how to maximize the talent they possess. Luckily, for everyone involved, kids in this area have a lot of it. It’s only natural for kids to want to swim for the same

coach.

Nelson believes the Rams have a real chance at another state title, but the weight of responsibility falls on more than just the three seniors. Arik Katz, Austin’s brother, for instance, is a sophomore, and has the potential to do great things, Nelson said. Guys like him will have to prove they are ready to handle the load.

Right now, Nelson said, the team as a whole isn’t ready to compete at that level. At the end of the season, it might be.

Hernandez-Tome admitted he’s less confident this year than in the past, simply because of who is no longer around, but I think that’s selling the returnees short. The trio all won state gold medals in the 400 freestyle relay, and Firlie finished second in both the 200 and 500 freestyle.

Firlie and Hernandez-Tome compete in most of the same events, and they both find it fun, competing with each other in practice, pushing that much harder.

“It’s almost impossible to train on your own,” Firlie said. “When everyone is suffering at the same time, it makes it easier.”

Nelson called Riley a versatile swimmer with many strengths, which gives him a shot to win the 200 individual medley.

We won’t know if the Rams’ seniors will get a storybook ending until Nov. 10 (assuming they reach the state meet). It’ll take a season of development to build some depth. Surprisingly, none of the seniors had much advice for the younger swimmers other than they need to put 100% effort into swimming. The Rams arise for 5 a.m. practice three days a week, and that’s on top of their daily afternoon practices.

It takes hard work to become a champion. Firlie, Riley and Hernandez-Tome can attest to that, three times over. Winning a state ring for their pinky fingers would be the capper to already incredible high school swimming careers.

solar eclipse Students, faculty and parents spent the end of the school day Aug. 21 outside.

T

he highlight of the school day on Aug. 21 came near the end for Southside Elementary School students.

Students filed onto the playground, armed with glasses, paper pin-hole viewing devices and homemade shoe box contraptions to view the solar eclipse.

Children, parents and faculty were able to watch as the moon passed in front of about 80% of the sun. It was difficult to tell who enjoyed the event more.

Children munched on such cosmic-themed snacks such as Moon Pies and Sun Chips as teachers encouraged children to watch closely. After all, it will be another seven years before students will get to see another solar eclipse.

In a cosmic twist of fate, the solar system and Hershorin Schiff Community Day School’s calendar overlapped Aug. 21 for the opportunity of the decade.

“It was so nice of the solar system to plan the eclipse for the first day (of school),” Community Day Head of School Dan Ceaser joked.

Administrators added the purchase of eclipse-viewing glasses to their list of usual back-to-school preparations and waited with anticipation for the main event.

But something cast a shadow on their excitement.

“We got a couple packages of solar eclipse glasses. One of them had the right number on them and one of them didn’t,” Ceaser said. “Some of them had all the right markings. They look like they have all the right specifications, but we couldn’t confirm with 100% certainty.”

Although administrators were fairly certain some of the glasses were up to viewing standards, they couldn’t confirm. In the end, staff decided to ditch the glasses in favor of some project-based learning.

Students spent the morning constructing eight different viewing devices and tested them as the eclipse reached its local peak at about 2:50 p.m.

“What was more impactful was all the learning that we did before we went out to the playground,” kindergarten teacher Shonna Brady said.

When the time came students filed outside, shoe boxes and paper pin-hole viewing devices in tow.

Younger students, like Brady’s kindergarteners, were paired with older students to help explain the viewing process.

“We made it work,” Ceaser said. “Probably the coolest part was hearing the kids compare why some viewers worked better than others. It was pretty fun to see and hear the kids work through the thought process.”

By the end of the day, the children were still buzzing about their brush with the cosmos. The only evidence of the change of plans were two neatly stacked piles of unused solar eclipse glasses in the school office.

“What started as somewhat of a bummer turned out really fun,” Ceaser said.

Although he concedes deciding to abandon the glasses was a disappointment, he looked on the bright side.

“The kids enjoyed it,” Ceaser said. “They learned a lot and had fun. The kids got to see and experience an eclipse. You don’t get to see that every day, and we got to do it safely.”
