On July 6, observers with the Sarasota Dolphin Research Program spotted a former resident of Mote Dolphin and Whale Hospital, Ginger, in Sarasota Bay with a newborn calf.

Ginger arrived at Mote in December 2008 after being found on Siesta Beach.

While there, Mote staff fed her live fish, hoping Ginger would return to the wild.

Using a GPS device, the SDRP has been tracking Ginger since her release in 2009, and said the latest development in Ginger’s story is a sign of a job done right.

“Successful reproduction is a very good indication of successful treatment in rehab,” SDRP Director Randall Wells said.

County Administrator Tom Harmer said Wednesday he has accepted Longboat Key’s offer to become its town manager, pending Town Commission approval.

The Longboat Key Town Commission is expected to discuss the five-year contract Monday at its regularly scheduled meeting. The town is offering an annual salary of $187,000, according to the meeting agenda. Harmer makes $207,625 with the county.

“It has been an extremely difficult decision for me,” Harmer told the County Commission on Wednesday.

Crews rescue hanging worker from Palm Avenue construction site S

arasota emergency personnel rescued a construction worker trapped more than 10 stories above the street after scaffolding on the side of a high-rise building malfunctioned.

Sarasota County Emergency Services responded to the scene at 10:35 a.m.

July 10. The worker was part of the construction crew for 624 Palm, an 18-story condominium project at 624 S. Palm Ave. The incident occurred after a mechanical issue sent one end of the scaffolding up, trapping the worker vertically.

Crews used safety lines to lower the worker from his precarious position.

Sarasota County Fire Chief Mike Reginer said there were no injuries, though the 49-year-old man was transported to the hospital for evaluation.

The 75-day period the city and county of Sarasota set to resolve a dispute about the downtown Community Redevelopment Area has come to an end with both sides still at odds.

On Tuesday, the County Commission criticized the city’s efforts to settle the dispute, which involved requests for funding for programs in north Sarasota.

The county has asked the city to outline specific one-time projects in which it can invest.

The downtown CRA, a program that reinvested county and city property tax revenue back into the area, expired in 2016. The city claims the county still owed one final $4.7 million payment through the CRA, but the county disagrees.

City Manager Tom Barwin chafed at the county’s criticism, stating the city has made a goodfaith effort to engage while accounting for the county’s needs.

“It takes two parties to negotiate,” Barwin said.

The County Commission voted unanimously Tuesday to maintain the property tax rate for fiscal year 2018.

Commissioners said they were uncomfortable raising rates when all other options, including cutting departmental budgets, had not been fully explored.

Moving forward, the tax rate cannot exceed 3.3912 mills. However, the commission still has the flexibility to reduce the rate at the final budget workshop and adoption in August and September.

When it comes to the future of Bobby Jones Golf Club, staff says the city has to spend money to make money.

Is an infusion of cash into Bobby Jones Golf Club enough to turn the municipal course into a moneymaker for the city?

f the City Commission approves staff’s proposed budget for fiscal year 2017-18, taxpayers will fund a $425,000 subsidy to Bobby Jones Golf Club — a facility whose reserves have run dry for the first time officials can recall.

The deterioration of Bobby Jones is an oft-discussed subject at City Hall. City staff say the 45-hole municipal facility, located on the east end of town, is suffering because its infrastructure dates back to the 1980s. The irrigation is bad. The drainage is bad.

As a result, the course tends to be in rough shape, too. The city replaced the greens on both 18-hole courses at Bobby Jones, and General Manager Sue Martin said that $500,000 investment

has more than paid off. But golfers still grouse about the conditions of the fairways, and the estimated income from greens fees declined by about $20,000 over last year.

City staff isn’t denying there are problems with the way the course has operated during the past decade. As they asked for that $425,000 subsidy from the city’s general fund at a budget workshop in June, they made clear that Bobby Jones will continue to struggle if nothing changes.

“Over the last 10 years, the golf course has been in decline, and the capital influx hasn’t been there to compete with the golf

courses in the area,” Martin said.

That capital influx, officials hope, is the key to turning around the fortunes of Bobby Jones. On Thursday, golf architect Richard Mandell will unveil his complete master plan for improving the facility at a Parks, Recreation and Environmental Protection Board meeting.

The city hired Mandell in January, paying $115,000 to get advice on how the golf club could be brought up to par. That contract came after a citizen study committee spent nearly a year assessing the needs of Bobby Jones and said the city should invest $14.5 million to improve the facility.

Mandell isn’t making his plans public before Thursday’s meeting because he wants to incorporate input from the advisory board before sharing it with a broader audience. During seven walkthroughs with golfers during his planning process, he’s gotten positive feedback to his vision for Bobby Jones, which is built around maintaining the existing character of the courses while improving the quality.

One thing that won’t be included in Mandell’s plans? A model for how to make Bobby Jones a financially stable business in the wake of any improvements.

Mandell said his expertise is in the physical conditions of the course, and the scope of his contract with the city doesn’t include the operations of the facility.

So, if Bobby Jones gets the “capital influx” staff says it needs, how sure can the city be that the club will stop losing money? Martin said it’s hard to understate the impact of the aging infrastructure the courses use. A rainy day could cost facility two or three days of revenue because the courses are so slow to drain.

“It doesn’t help that there’s a lot of attention being given to the decline of the facility,” Martin said. “There could be golfers out there saying, ‘Let’s wait for them to improve it before we go.’”

Martin said staff has begun discussing the need to have a formal business plan in place to go along with any improvements, but she described that as the next step in the planning process.

“We can’t get a business plan

until we know where we’re going with the master plan,” she said.

Although Mandell didn’t want to get into the specifics of managing the course financially, he shares Martin’s optimism about the club’s ability to succeed following the right improvements.

He dismissed a narrative that calls golf a declining sport.

What has happened, he said, is a burst bubble. The number of golf courses expanded beginning in the 1980s, mostly private courses that anchored residential developments. The number of casual golfers increased around that time, and has drawn down since.

Mandell said that has created a real problem for the golf business.

Those private courses, struggling to stay afloat, are opening up to the public — and offering rates competitive with municipal facilities.

“That all of a sudden does become competition for Bobby Jones, but Bobby Jones has a lot more going for it than these courses,” Mandell said.

The history of the course in the community is a legitimate asset, Mandell said. So are the names associated with it: golfer Bobby Jones and architect Donald Ross, both influential figures in the early history of the sport in America.

Both residents and visitors want to golf at Bobby Jones — just not in the current conditions.

“People are finding Bobby Jones,” Mandell said. “What they’re finding is a golf course that’s in decline.”

Nearly six months after Mandell began his master planning work, many questions remain unanswered. How much will the improvements cost? How long will it take to overhaul the facility?

And what, exactly, does a thriving Bobby Jones Golf Club look like from an operations standpoint?

Despite those questions, officials have not shown any signs of wavering in their belief that Bobby Jones is an asset for the city.

And Mandell is confident that a high-quality municipal golf facility can succeed in Sarasota.

“If the country hears that Bobby Jones has been completely renovated and rebuilt, they’re going to flock,” Mandell said.

City considers bringing Thunder by the Bay back DAVID CONWAY DEPUTY MANAGING EDITOR

After a protracted battle between merchants, residents, elected officials and event organizers saw Thunder by the Bay move from downtown Sarasota to Lakewood Ranch in 2016, could the motorcycle festival make its way back to the city?

On Monday, during a special budget meeting, two members of the City Commission expressed their desire to see Thunder by the Bay downtown again. Commissioners Hagen Brody and Liz Alpert have both shared their support for the event.

The city never formally prohibited Thunder by the Bay from continuing to operate near the bayfront along Main Street.

However, in a staff-conducted survey of downtown merchants affected by street closures during the weekend-long event, 62% of respondents said the festival hurt their business.

In the wake of that survey, organizer Suncoast Charities for Children was unable to settle on a new location in the city. Despite the charity’s decision to leave downtown last year, City Manager Tom Barwin said staff would reach out to see if a workable arrangement could be reached.

“We can certainly assess the situation,” Barwin said.

Lucy Nicandri, executive director of Suncoast Charities, said the

organization is “definitely” willing to consider a return to the city.

She has not yet met with Brody or Alpert, but she hopes to speak to them before a Suncoast Charities board meeting in August.

“I was very pleased just to hear those comments they made,” Nicandri said.

The 20th annual Thunder by the Bay is scheduled for Jan. 4-8.

The mentions of Thunder by the Bay came during a broader discussion about the city’s special events regulations. The board voted to continue providing inkind services to 12 special events, including the Downtown Sarasota Holiday Parade and Sarasota Power Boat Grand Prix Block Party.

In 2016-17, the cost of those inkind services was just less than $300,000.

BUDGET NOTES

Working to close an $882,000 gap in staff’s proposed general fund budget, the commission voted against raising the millage rate to increase incoming revenue.

Instead, the board’s preferred method for balancing the budget is reducing the amount of money set aside for a new economic development fund. Staff originally recommended dedicating $2.3 million in property tax revenue toward that fund, designed to replace the expired downtown Community Redevelopment Area as an investment tool.

“It has been an honor to serve Sarasota County and our citizens these past five years,” Harmer said. “I am most proud of the customer service provided by our employees and the culture we have worked to create within our organization.”

Harmer is the latest in a line of several Sarasota County employees who have left their positions to work for Longboat Key — a fact that didn’t go unnoticed at the County Commission meeting.

“I’m trying to think of punishments for Longboat Key,” Commissioner Nancy Detert said.

“They keep taking our best and brightest, and I’m not taking kindly to that.”

Other Longboat Key converts include former Sarasota County Public Works Director Isaac Brownman, who in May ended his 17-year career with the county to become Longboat Key’s public works director. Retiring Longboat Key Town Manager Dave Bullock himself was a deputy administrator for Sarasota County for 14 years before accepting the Longboat Key job in 2011.

“I think Longboat Key is extremely smart,” Commissioner Mike Moran said Wednesday. “I’m just sorry it’s at our expense.”

County Commissioner Nancy Detert called Harmer “one of the best” she’s ever worked with, praised his ability to keep things calm and noted his lack of ego.

“So you’ve ruined my life,” she concluded. “That’s all I’m saying … It’s just a crying shame.”

Gans added that it’s uncertain what will happen Monday.

“I’m one vote,” he said.

If approved, county commissioners will have less than six months to find Harmer’s replacement. They won’t decide on the formal process for that until the commission reconvenes after an August recess.

Bird Key Yacht Club preps for upgrades A new pickleball court and expanded dining area will accommodate growing membership.

Bird Key Yacht Club just finished a $2.6 million renovation of its marina last fall, but the club isn’t finished making improvements.

In June and July, representatives for the yacht club filed plans with the city for two more projects on the premises. One would add a pickleball court and enhanced landscaping, and the other would expand the club’s outdoor dining deck.

The club originally filed plans for the pickleball courts last October. Those courts, six in total, would replace 18 parking spots in a lot on the property. The club would be left with 133 parking spaces if the city approves the plan.

Adding space for pickleball, a paddle sport frequently touted as the fastest-growing sport in America, is designed to provide another amenity for people who use the yacht club.

“One, we really wanted to upgrade the landscaping and the waterfront,” said Brian McCarthy, the owner’s representative for both projects. “We felt the

area could be better utilized for something for the benefit of our members.”

The yacht club must obtain a major conditional use permit to replace the parking spaces with the pickleball courts. McCarthy said the club has already worked with nearby residents to assure them the project won’t cause any problems. The club even held a pickleball demonstration to address concerns about the noise the courts would generate.

“Nothing like getting out and hearing it to convince people it is a relatively quiet sport,” he said.

City staff said there is no date set for the community workshop, but the intent is to hold it in early August.

The club is also asking the city for a variance to the code that would permit a 550-square-foot expansion of a patio and dining area along the water. City regulations mandate a 30-foot setback from the waterfront; the proposed expansion would be just less than 10 feet from the water.

McCarthy said the plan to expand the dining area is a response to increased interest in the club, particularly after the marina project was completed last year.

“Everyone’s extremely happy with it and excited,” McCarthy said. “It’s just turned out to be phenomenal.”

fter being amused and enticed by advertising this spring for 23andMe DNA testing, I decided to take the plunge and discover the knowledge that lies in my genome. When my husband asked me what a good Mother’s Day gift would be, I piped up with, “23andMe.” For the uninitiated, 23andMe is one of three major consumer DNA tests. The others are Ancestry DNA and Family Tree DNA. The ultimate consumer, I chose 23andMe because I liked its advertising. The company is named for the 23 pairs of chromosomes in a normal human cell. Its an easy-to-navigate process. You pick it up on the internet, or at various retail stores. I chose the internet and they sent a nifty kit that explained how to fill the vial with saliva and ship it back. 23andMe has been around for a decade or so, and was even named “Invention of the Year”

by Time magazine in 2008. And while they said it would take up to six weeks to receive the report, it showed up in my inbox in less than a month.

THE REPORTS ARRIVE

The results were a hodgepodge of weird information: I’m not part American Indian, which secretly I hoped. However, I do have the gene that gives me the ability to smell consumed asparagus in my urine. Doesn’t everyone? “What are you talking about?” asked my husband.

(I guess everyone doesn’t.) I’m predisposed to weigh more than average. Yes, I really can blame those extra pounds on my genes.

And, did you know that your caffeine consumption has a genetic basis? It does and mine is above average, which was another nonstarter.

I was beginning to wonder if my Mother’s Day gift was a bust.

Then I thumbed to the “Genetic Health Risk Report” and was stunned to see that I had a higher risk for late on-set Alzheimer’s.

Gobsmacked, the baby boomers’ worst nightmare was staring me in the face. How could I have forgotten that my aunt couldn’t remember who I was the last five years of her life. And, vague memories surfaced of how my grandfather’s sisters weren’t allowed out of the house alone lest they get lost going around the block. Ever the optimist, I quickly assessed all of the activities I engage in that research indicates stave off Alzheimer’s — regular exercise, a Mediterranean diet, mental and social activity. But when I woke up at 3 a.m. with visions of wandering around an assisted care facility, I decided I needed help.

Are 23andMe or the other companies offering this service perfect?

In researching this column, I’ve uncovered several articles that subscribe a less than altruistic motive to this line of business.

An article in Scientific American posits that 23andMe CEO Anne Wojcicki just happens to be married to Sergei Brin, the founder of Google.

“When it first launched, Google billed itself as a faithful servant of the consumer, a company devoted only to building the best tool to help us satisfy our cravings for information on the web. And Google’s search engine did just that. But as we now know, the fundamental purpose of the company wasn’t to help us search, but to hoard information,” writes the author.

This somewhat paranoid line of reasoning implies that there is much more money to be made selling the data collected than by selling 23andMe kits, aping the Google model of using its data for individualizing advertising to whatever else they may have cooking in their Silicon Valley complex.

KNOWLEDGE IS POWER

Christina Captain, a noted local acupuncture physician and nutritionist, had mentioned months ago during an interview (I did remember that) that she helped patients interpret DNA tests. We set up a time to meet and in anticipation of that session, she had me run the raw 23andMe data through a program available on the internet called Promethease. We sat down. The first thing she said was, “Breathe.” Excellent advice.

We began to look at the report in a dispassionate way.

“This is information that can be very helpful for you,” she said.

“But more than that, it also is incredibly helpful for your children and grandchildren. These are mutations that travel for generations. But, what’s most important is to not take the info and freak out.”

I was very overweight. My trigger for developing diabetes was my weight and my environment of loving sugar.” She reduced her weight by more than 50 pounds and now maintains that with diet and exercise, and no diabetes has emerged.

“Everyone has the power to control to a great extent their triggers. You don’t have to discharge the bullet. You have to look at this in a big picture way and know that knowledge is power,” she said.

That was several weeks ago. Am I feeling powerful with my knowledge? Yes, I am. With Captain’s encouragement, I began to do a deep dive on Alzheimer’s. While I thought I had been living in an Alzheimer’s protective way, through my research I have pinpointed several important practices I have neglected. And I am taking steps to incorporate that knowledge into my lifestyle. Just as important, I’ve begun conversations with members in my family about this mutation in my genetic code that they very well might share. I’ve encouraged them to do one of the genetic tests to gain more information about their DNA. WOULD I DO IT AGAIN?

Interestingly enough, I have had many people tell me that I should just ignore it — that everyone is going to get something or another. I reject that totally. In retrospect, it was the best Mother’s Day gift ever. Not only do I have the knowledge to improve my future health, but I can also clue my generations to come on how they can live healthier, hopefully happier lives.

And P.S., I also learned that my muscle composition is quite uncommon in elite power athletes. So now I can eliminate feeling guilty about all the times I’ve quit training for that marathon I was going to run. Now I can just enjoy walking my dogs around the neighborhood at a pace where we can absorb the beauty around us. And that in itself is powerful.

Facts are facts when talking about election This is in response to the letter from Susan McCulloch letter published on July 6.

I am 88, a war veteran and during my work life I frequently utilized various assessment instruments designed to identify personality characteristics.

attempted to influence the election there is not one shred of evidence to prove that they did.

It is obvious that Ms. McCulloch, along with many other Hillary Clinton voters, are still stuck in Stage 1 of the five stages of grief which is denial.

Perhaps it is time to accelerate to Stage 5, which is acceptance that, like it or not, Donald Trump is president and join me in hoping that he succeeds since this country cannot afford another failed presidency.

Between Commissioner Hagen Brody’s victory and my own defeated candidacy, we garnered over 65% of the vote on May 9, and neither of us ran on increasing taxes. On Monday, July 3, during a meeting when the Sarasota City Commission increased business taxes by 5%, one might have expected to hear the usual justifications of investing in our city, but not the words uttered by Commissioner Willie Shaw.

What he said was that the double-the-rate-of-inflation increase was “a small price to pay for the honor of doing business in Sarasota.”

A glance at public records will show that former Mayor Shaw reckons “honor” and “small price” differently than me, as he didn’t even pay the filing fee of $260 when he ran for office in 2015, citing financial hardship. The statute allowing such an indulgence exists to enable anyone to run for office regardless of economic status, which is fine and I have no problem with it. But isn’t it rather hubristic to then dismiss $47,000 in extra taxes as a “small price?”

When they spend over $100,000 every two years to run our elections off-cycle, how can they justify increasing any taxes?

If they’re so flush with cash that they can waste $100,000 every

I served on a jury several years ago where the evidence against the defendant was overwhelming, but when we got into deliberations there were three “Feelers” who said that they did not believe the defendant was guilty because he “was such a nice looking young man.”

If you understand the above and read her letter, Ms. McCulloch can clearly be classified a “Feeler.”

She states that “it is difficult for many people, myself included, to accept the 2016 election as legitimate” and bases her statement on the following: n Hillary Clinton received more of the popular vote than Donald Trump. n The Russian effort to influence the presidential election.

If she used logical thinking to arrive at her conclusion Ms. McCulloch would clearly recognize two facts: In the eighth grade I learned the president of the United States is not elected by popular vote but by the electoral vote as was specified by the Founding Fathers and practiced ever since.

Though Russia may have

It is time to raise your concerns with your elected commissioners by email or in person at City Hall, lest the next “small price to pay” is sitting at the bottom right of your property tax bill in substantially higher numbers for the “honor” presumably of living in the city of Sarasota with Willie Shaw as one of your leaders.

Even as the Downtown Improvement District pursues a unified strategy for marketing downtown Sarasota, there’s discord among stakeholders about how to proceed as the planning process takes place.

On July 6, the DID held its first meeting following a June workshop with other downtown groups about marketing and promotion. During the workshop, groups including the Downtown Sarasota Alliance and Sarasota Downtown Merchants Association expressed interest in creating consistent branding for the heart of the city.

But as the DID tried to figure out its next step at the July 6 meeting, the board expressed anxiety about getting other groups to contribute financially to an advertising push.

“Everyone says, ‘Yeah, you do it — and we’ll cheer you on,’” DID board member Mark Kauffman said. “I want to see more participation.”

Although Kauffman expressed skepticism about the prospect of getting broad buy-in for a marketing campaign, the rest of the board is hopeful the DID can set the tone for advertising from the Rosemary District to Burns Court.

DID Chairman Ron Soto suggested the organization could adopt its own messaging for advertising and encourage other organizations to use the same promotional tools. Anand Pallegar, whose marketing firm atLarge is working with the DID, suggested that would be more likely to succeed than asking for money before settling on an actual message.

Still, there’s no guarantee other organizations will buy in.

“I think it could potentially work, but it’s a risk,” Pallegar said.

In the meantime, other downtown groups are trying to balance the desire to buy-in with a need to proceed with their own marketing campaigns. Francine DiFilippo Kent, chairwoman of the Downtown Sarasota Alliance, said the DID’s decisions will affect how the DSA promotes downtown, which includes posting banners on downtown light poles.

“Part of this design situation needs to be — how do we transition from what we’ve been doing to what you want to do that’s new?” DiFilippo Kent said. “You

“That effort shouldn’t stop while we try to form this organization (leading a unified downtown marketing campaign), because this organization isn’t going to come to be,” Kauffman said. “I have very little confidence — so in the meantime, you should keep doing what you’re doing.”

Despite Kauffman’s doubt, the board voted to proceed with developing a conceptual message for branding and promoting downtown to share with other stakeholder groups. As a whole, the DID still believes it can generate the momentum necessary to unite the entirety of downtown behind one promotional concept.

“I think the goal is that all ships will rise with the tide,” DID Operations Manager John Moran said.

“Someone has to build the structure.”

A new marketing campaign by Visit Sarasota County encourages residents to tell their friends to come visit, with the help of word play and a customizable digital postcard.

“You ‘Ota Visit” —pronounced “oh-tuh” — is a play on the words “oughta” and “Sarasota,” and is an effort to get residents to share their community with others.

“Potential visitors have many competing options when trying to decide on where to go, and locals like to ‘brag’ about living in Sarasota,” Visit Sarasota County

President Virginia Haley said in a release.

The cornerstone of the campaign is youotavisit.com, where locals can customize and send a digital postcard to their friends or family, according to a release.

The postcards can also be shared on social media. Locals are encouraged to tag Visit Sarasota and use #youotavisit when sharing the postcards, or videos and images of their own that encourage friends and families to visit.

While in the past, Visit Sarasota has worked with some residents with large social media followings or existing blogs to market the area, this is the first time the

“This is the first time we’ve really looked to every resident,” she said.

The broader focus is an attempt to grow the “friends and family” market in the county.

The man walked past all points of payment and left the store, at which point the employee made contact with him and called the police. f you happened to be at the 17th Street Park softball fields around 11:30 a.m. on July 10, a few things would have hit your senses. The sun, confident as ever, would have shone in your eyes. The unmistakable “ping” of bat-on-softball would have rung in your ears. Then, creeping up faintly at first, the smell of hot dough and cheese would have crawled up your nostrils.

That’s because July 10 happened to be Pizza Day for the Sarasota Senior Softball Association, a group of people 55 and older who still love to play the game.

After their battles on the diamond, teams sauntered to a table and filled their bellies with slices of pizza. Watermelon and cans of soda were available on the side. As the players ate, they swapped stories and complaints, like drivers slowing down to a crawl on turns.

They laughed, both with and at each other, and shook hands on games well-played.

The SSSA plays its Gold League games, the higher-level ones, on Monday mornings, around 8:30 a.m. at the 17th Street Park fields. Silver League games take place Tuesdays and Thursdays.

Each team plays twice on a given morning. The SSSA plays yearround, with a winter season from November to March, and a summer season from April to October.

The association started in 1997 with 77 players, according to its own website, sarasotaseniorsoftball.org. Now, the association has more than 350 members, separated into six leagues. Part of the reason why so many people crave a spot in the association is its balance of competitiveness and inclusiveness. In the association’s Silver Leagues, anyone who wants to play has a spot, with one caveat: Everyone must be able to defend themselves.

“The reason I like it is because if you’ve got a pulse, and you can get here, you play,” said Sands Robnick, a five-year veteran of the SSSA. “We’ve got guys in their 80s pitching and playing third base.”

All of the SSSA’s leagues use modified rules for the safety of everyone. A double-base is used at first base to eliminate any potential contact between fielder and runner. The same idea is behind the use of a “runner’s plate” behind home plate. Pitchers must stand behind a screen.

There have been cases, albeit few, where the SSSA has had to inform a player’s family that he can no longer protect himself, SSSA President Chuck Cason said. “Bad hops are always going to be there,” he said, and players need to deal with them.

In true softball fashion, the players bond over injuries.

“When you’re younger, you say, ‘This hurts,’” Cason said, pointing to his left elbow. “Now, you say, ‘This doesn’t hurt, but everything else does!’”

Thus, teasing someone over a physical miscue, like not getting to a ball in the outfield, is forbidden. Forget how many outs there are, however, and you’ll be hearing about it for the rest of the day.

The Gold League is reserved for the top players. In most cases, this would be settled by a popularity contest, but not in this association.

Each player in the SSSA has his skills graded on a 1-12 scale, with 1 being the highest possible rating. These

skills include the five tools even major league scouts use in evaluation: hitting for power, hitting for average, fielding, throwing and speed. The best of the SSSA have been known to score a “1” in four of the five tools, Cason said.

Ratings are determined by Cason and a small committee.

They meet after each season to update things based on the play they witnessed the previous period. New SSSA members go through a combine, not unlike the NFL’s, to give players an initial rating. The system almost creates a bell curve, Cason said.

The Gold League consists of five teams with 12 players on a team. A draft is held, and managers base their selections not just on a player’s field skills, but on attitude and skills as a teammate.

Teams in the SSSA want to win, but more than that, they want exercise and camaraderie with a bunch of guys looking for the same things.

Red, white and true American Outlaws show off their love of country and soccer.

J

ust before halftime of the U.S. Men’s National Soccer Team’s Gold Cup game against Panama on July 8, two hands wrapped a scarf around my neck.

The scarf, red, white, dark blue and light blue, was emblazoned with patriotic clown imagery on one side. On the other, it read “Circus City Outlaws.”

“There,” the voice connected to the hands said. “Now you look like you belong.”

I was at Shamrock Pub, 2257 Ringling Blvd., and the voice belonged to Ian Linn, president of AO Sarasota, the local chapter of the U.S. Soccer fan group American Outlaws. The pub, owned by AO Sarasota treasurer Derek Anderson, is where AO Sarasota gathers for U.S. soccer games, men’s and women’s.

Linn, 43, became president in January. He grew up in Indianapolis and played the sport for a decade. He and his family traveled across the country to watch the best matches. He remembers watching the North American Soccer League’s “Soccer Bowl” back in the era of Pele. He’s patriotic, too, and the combination led to U.S. soccer becoming his No. 1 obsession.

“It’s the world’s league,” he

said, “and it’s really the world’s sport.”

The are 82 paid members of AO Sarasota, with a core of 25-30 who come to every event.

I don’t think any of them were happy with the U.S. starting lineup, particularly Graham Zusi at right back. The crowd was happy with University of South Florida product Dom Dwyer getting the start at forward. He’d reward their fandom later. By the game’s start, the pub was fuller than the glasses of beer being consumed by all in attendance.

This was nothing, member J.C. McKitterick told me. In the past, he’s had to hoist people onto his shoulders to fit everyone in the pub. It gets so crowded, he said, that the bar had to re-do its air conditioning system to accommodate the crowd.

The American Outlaws have many chants, and they sing all of them on this day, including, to the tune of “Yankee Doodle,” “Come on, U.S., score a goal, it’s really very simple; Put the ball into the net and we’ll go freaking mental.” The score is 0-0 when they break out that one.

Halftime hits. There’s a raffle to be decided. Linn had previously handed out a ticket. Prizes included AO sunglasses, free beer for the second half, and a tailgate-sized soccer net.

As soon as that’s complete, Linn and a few friends scurry out the back door and make the

short jaunt to Sarasota Lanes for halftime shots. Some get a Pickleback, others get Jack Daniel’s Tennessee Fire. Linn doesn’t remember how this particular AO Sarasota tradition got started, but the group now partakes in it whenever a U.S. team is tied or trailing at the half.

The group splits in half on the way back to the pub, with some going an extra step and taking a shot of Rumple Minze.

On the ceiling of the pub hang scarves. They’re from other AO chapters. When AO Sarasota takes a road trip to another chapter, they bring scarves to trade. Recently, members of the Birmingham, Ala., and Detroit chapters have watched a game at Shamrock Pub. Linn has taken numerous road trips with

members of the group, including Nov. 11 to Columbus, Ohio, for the U.S. men’s team’s World Cup-qualifying match against Mexico (the U.S. lost, 2-1) and Feb. 3 to Chattanooga, Tenn., for the team’s game against Jamaica (the U.S. won, 2-0).

Linn is enhancing the group’s community outreach game by starting the Cleats for the City program. Bring a pair of (gently) used youth cleats to the pub, and you get a free beer.

A few minutes into the second half, I glanced up in time to see Dwyer put one past Panama’s keeper. The Outlaws go insane.

Yelling, slapping hands, busting out machine gun-esque rattlers.

The pub might as well be a mosh pit at a punk rock show.

It got quieter when Miguel

Camargo answered for Panama.

The score remained tied as the final whistle blew. It’s not the result the Outlaws wanted, but it’s not the worst.

I began packing up my things, but the Outlaws still had one more song to sing: “We love you, we love you, we love you, and where you go we’ll follow, we’ll follow, we’ll follow; ‘Cause we support the U.S., the U.S., the U.S., and that’s the way we like it, we like it, we like it.”

How long have you been playing baseball?

Since I was 8 or 9 years old. I picked it up in Sarasota.

What is the appeal of baseball to you?

The success tastes so good. I mean, the failure sucks, but once you get a base hit, a double, a triple, home run, any of those things, it tastes so good.

What is your best skill on the field?

I would have to say my arm. It (the ball) comes really good out of the hand.

My main goal is to play Division I baseball. For high school, I’d like to make it to the district championship. Last year, we didn’t do that. This year, we’re going to have some pretty good pitchers, so I think we can do it.

T

eenage boys are stereotypically good at making noise, just maybe not a four-part harmony.

But a group of Riverview High School students is breaking from the ranks of typical teenage pastimes with their barbershop quartet — Maroon 4.

Although their medium might be dated, their introduction to the world of barber shopping follows a modern narrative.

It started with a link to a recording from an international barbershop quartet competition. (Yes, those exist.)

“Hey, this sounds pretty good,” Max Curran remembered thinking before sending it to his friends Jake Harvey and Cuyler King.

They were hooked. The harmonies, the arrangements, the music resonated with the trio, but there was a slight problem. They were lacking a fourth. Enter Will Cox. “I knew he was very musically inclined, so I was like, ‘Can Will try out?’” King said.

A year later, the three laugh at the concept of trying out. It seems oddly official for what the group actually is — four boys singing turn of the (20th) century hits in each other’s houses.

The songs usually start the same way.

A link appears in a group message, followed by a flurry of cre-

ative speculation.

“There are like thousands of links,” King said.

Curran prints out the sheet music and walks each member through his part. Depending on the vocal range the song requires, either King or Cox take lead.

Whoever doesn’t take lead sings the tenor portion, leaving Harvey on baritone and Curran on bass.

So far they have a limited repertoire — two songs — but if you are looking for someone to sing either “Danny Boy” or “Wild Irish Rose” in a perfect four-part harmony, Maroon 4 is your group.

“We’re slow learners,” Curran joked.

For now, they perform at Riverview High choir concerts and with the Chorus of the Keys, the local branch of the national Barbershop Harmony Society.

Maroon 4’s age makes them a novelty, but they are also indicative of what Chorus of the Keys Musical Director Drew Kirkman hopes is the changing face of barbershop.

“In the past they used to be the exception,” Kirkman said. “We started in 1938 with the Barbershop Harmony Society. It used to be only older white men, unfortunately.”

But Kirkman said the medium has begun to engage with women, people of color and young people in the decades since its inception.

“We’re branching out to be more culturally inclusive,” Kirkman said. “The youth is our big-

gest increase in membership over the past five to 10 years.”

It’s an emerging reality to which Maroon 4 can now personally attest thanks to Chorus of the Keys. The chorus sponsored the four students to attend Harmony Explosion, a barbershop bootcamp at Walt Disney World.

“I was surprised,” Harvey said.

“I thought it was just a bunch of old guys.”

Hobby aside, no one would mistake the members of Maroon 4 for the “old guys.” Even when they aren’t singing, the quartet knows how to make an entrance.

“They don’t go anywhere quietly,” Carol Harvey, Jake’s mom, said.

They play music and talk about cars and lead busy social lives.

Even when the four do make time to see each other, there is no guarantee the time will be spent rehearsing.

With two years of high school left, the quartet’s goals are close to home.

“Just share the music, you know. Hopefully get some kids interested in barbershop,” King said. “That would be awesome.”

n 2010, the lionfish population in the Gulf of Mexico boomed.

Lad Akins, director of special programs for the Reef Environmental Education Foundation, said the invasive population spread slowly until 2007. But in 2010, it exploded.

To help combat the population’s expansion, Mote Marine Laboratory & Aquarium hosted its fourth annual Sarasota Lionfish Derby from July 7-9 in conjunction with REEF. Fourteen teams competed to see which could catch the most lionfish, the largest lionfish and the smallest lionfish.

On July 9, the derby ended with a cooking competition and tasting. Stephen Phelps, chef and owner of Indigenous restaurant, said two things need to come out of the derby: People need to try lionfish and people need to figure out how to fish for the species.

Bird Key rings in the Fourth of July

I

t was all about the stars and stripes at July 4 Bird Key Yacht Club.

Club members and their guests gathered for a Fourth of July celebration complete with games and prizes, a buffet dinner, flag ceremony and potato car races.

As guests arrived, they began the party with carnival games, including darts, putt-putt and other quick games where participants had to either stack Diet Coke cans on paper plates to build a pyramid or hold a Popsicle stick in their mouth while trying to balance dice on top.

Next came the flag ceremony and dinner, followed by the potato car races and fireworks.

That was the logic at Temple Emanu-El’s annual outreach wine tasting July 11 at the Fresh Start Cafe.

The event gives potential members an opportunity to mingle with temple congregants while sampling Israeli wines.

“This is just about having some fun and meeting some new people,” Rabbi Michael Shefrin said to guests.

Shefrin took tasters on a journey through Jewish history

during the tasting, using each wine as an anchor. There was just one minor hurdle.

“I feel like I am an expert in various things, but wine is not one of them,” Shefrin joked.

Luckily, Temple Emanu-El member Bill Haiby was behind the bar to offer some context.

“None of this gets done alone,” Shefrin said. “So if you are looking for people to do things with, (Temple Emanu-El) is a wonderful place to be a part of.”

Such was the case July 10 at Westcoast Black Theatre Troupe as staff and patrons commemorated its capital improvement campaign.

Several times during the program, WBTT supporters rose from their seats to honor the work of founder and Artistic Director Nate Jacobs, Execu-

tive Director Julie Leach and many others in their efforts to raise $4 million for the theater’s $6 million multiphase project.

“All of you have played your part in today,” Jacobs said. “I could not have done this alone.”

The theater broke ground on the $4 million first phase of the project, which includes improvements to the Binz building and the parking lot.
