The city has hired a Virginia planning professional to oversee a newly reformed planning department.

On March 16, the city announced Steven Cover would begin work as planning director on April 12. Cover is the director of community planning, housing and development in Arlington, Va. He will make $150,000 annually.

His experience also includes work in Madison, Wis., and Atlanta. The city announcement noted Cover’s work developing a transportation master plan in Madison. City officials have hoped hiring a planning director will help address transportation issues.

The city is considering changing the park rules that require dogs to stay on a leash, but some pet owners say officials are barking up the wrong tree.

orman Hervieux is a believer in the therapeutic value of fetch.

Twice a day for the past 32 years, Hervieux has gone to Sapphire Shores Park on Sun Circle, a short walk from his home in the area. In the evening, he brings his poodle, Liebchen, and tosses around a ball for his pet to chase.

It helps him relax.

“It’s a simple story,” Hervieux said. “I’m a simple person. I come home from work. I’ve got a dog.

I’m glad I’m done with work. I play fetch. It’s like baseball and apple pie.”

Hervieux wasn’t at the park Monday evening, though. He was listening to the City Commission discuss regulations that would impede his ability to play fetch.

Based on the recommendations

of the city’s Parks, Recreation and Environmental Protection Advisory Board, the commission was considering requiring dogs at all city parks to be on leashes.

Hervieux was part of a group of dog owners who use Sapphire Shores Park and implored the commission not to approve the new rules.

“It’s a drastic change in the quality of life in my life and every schmo like me who comes home from work and wants to take their dog out,” Hervieux said.

The dog owners were successful — to some degree, at least. The City Commission took no action Monday, continuing its discussion to next month as it searches for the best policy for regulating dogs in city parks.

The city has been examining this subject since late last year.

Some residents lobbied the city to allow dogs off leash at Bayfront Park — one of four city parks with leash requirements — during the early morning hours. Others complained about off-leash dogs in that same park, asking the city to step up enforcement.

City Attorney Robert Fournier said the existing regulations are difficult to navigate. In almost all city parks, dogs just have to be under voice control and within

The city agreed to consider letting dogs remain off leash in the park.

100 feet of their owners. There are the four exceptions where dogs must be on leash. On Lido Beach, dogs aren’t allowed at all.

And in some parks where dogs are allowed, there are pet-free zones.

The proposed changes were an attempt to streamline the rules.

Dogs were allowed in city parks, but only on leash. The only exceptions would be fenced-in dog park areas, the increased development of which is a priority for Parks and Recreation Director Jerry Fogle.

Dog owners who use Sapphire Shores Park say those regulations would fail to consider the unique character of the neighborhood park. Darian Hoyt Miller described the park as self-policing, with distinct areas for offleash dogs, on-leash dogs and children. She called it an important community meeting place — and worried the new leash rules would throw off the dynamics.

“We gather peacefully,” Hoyt Miller said. “We interact, we build friendships, we discuss the neighborhood.”

The commission was swayed by the residents’ testimony. As an alternative, Fournier suggested the “dog park” designation didn’t have to apply to fenced-in areas — that Sapphire Shores Park could be classified as a dog park,

letting dogs run off leash. Commissioners directed staff to study which other neighborhood parks might like to allow dogs off leash.

Marking off-leash parks the exception, rather than the rule, would bring the city policy closer to the county’s regulations.

“The goal is still to end up with something that’s a little easier to follow,” Fournier said.

Still, solving the problem might not be so straightforward. City Commissioner Susan Chapman questioned how the city would make sure people were actually complying with more stringent leash regulations.

“When I told people walking their dogs off leash this was going to happen, they said, ‘We’re going to take our chances,’” she said.

Chapman suggested it would take an undue concentration of resources to enforce new rules.

“We’re going to have to have, I think, a dog police unit,” she said.

Hervieux bristled at Fournier’s suggestion that Sapphire Shores Park become a dog park. In his mind, there’s a significant distinction between a dog park and a neighborhood park that happens to allow dogs off leash. Residents don’t want to see dog owners flocking to their park — they want to maintain the status quo.

And not everybody agrees dogs should run free in neighborhood parks. On Tuesday, Lauren Peltz took her chocolate Labs to Indian Beach Park. She keeps her dogs leashed in parks close to the street, which applies to both Sapphire Shores and Indian Beach.

She doesn’t trust her dogs enough to ditch the leash — and she doesn’t trust owners who assure her that their dogs are under control.

“They’re still dogs,” Peltz said.

“They’re canines. They’re not human beings.”

As the city continues its consideration of leash laws, Hervieux said staff isn’t going to be able to find a simple, one-size-fits-all solution. As a result, he’s hopeful change isn’t going to come.

“What we have is working,” Hervieux said.

temporarily relocate beginning May 6 to First Street and Orange Avenue.

At least that’s what the plans are now. Pagano is motivated by the looming construction of The Mark, an 11-story, 157-unit condominium on State and Lemon.

Working with the farmers market board, Pagano determined the potential side effects of the project were too risky to keep the market in the same place.

“Nobody wanted to get any

customers and vendors in harm’s way,” Pagano said.

As the decision to relocate solidified, merchants on State Street were motivated to find a way to persuade the market not to move. Business owners in the 1500 block of State Street are effusive with praise for the market and its impact on the area.

“It’s important to State Street and State Street merchants,” said Wayne Ruben, owner of the commercial space in the State Street garage. “We’ve been strong supporters of the market.”

Ruben and Tre Michel, owner of State of the Arts Gallery, tried to come up with solutions to calm Pagano’s fears. To the merchants, that effort seemed to be progressing well.

The contractor for The Mark

indicated it could provide additional insurance for the market. Contractor Ernie Ritz, former chairman of the Downtown Improvement District, worked with the city to find a new power source when light poles were removed from State and Lemon.

The Mark’s developer said it would be willing to pay for taller fencing with printed windscreens to better mask the project. In total, the merchants made an eight-point list of incentives for keeping the market on State.

They hoped they had covered all their bases. In the wake of the announcement, they’re not sure what concerns Pagano still has.

“I’m perplexed as to why it’s moving,” Ruben said. “I don’t understand it. We haven’t given

Pagano isn’t doing this because he wants to. It’d be easier to stay on State Street, where the market has an established presence and there’s plenty of shade. But he said safety is still a pressing issue.

“Customers said to me about six months ago, ‘Why would the city even allow something to go on in front of this large construction?’” Pagano said. “You’ll have to ask them. We’re planning on doing something safe for the community temporarily.”

The day the announcement went public, Deputy City Manager Marlon Brown asked Pagano if he could meet with the market’s board of directors. Brown said the city was interested in serving as a facilitator.

merchants’ concerns, Brown wanted to make sure every avenue had been explored before the move actually occurred.

“We have no desire to stop the farmers market from using First Street, if that indeed is what they’re trying to do,” Brown said.

“We want to be sure they’re aware of what everyone is willing to do to make sure the market can stay in their current footprint.”

Michel understands Pagano’s concerns. She felt intimidated during the construction of the State Street garage, and she knows Pagano isn’t acting in bad faith.

But she wants everybody involved to at least try to see if the market can stay on State Street after May. If the market does relocate, D. Pagano expressed concern about that idea, suggesting it could compete with his market.

But Michel said their event would focus on distinct, family-friendly events like yoga and chalk drawing.

“I don’t think anyone here wants to look like we’re working against the market,” she said.

Pagano has agreed to Brown’s request: The market board will hold a public meeting March 28 at the Bayfront Community Center on Tamiami Trail.

Ruben, Michel and other State Street business owners are confident the area will remain attractive even if the market goes away.

But they know the farmers market is an incredibly valuable neighbor. They’re not letting it go away without a fight.

“State Street is a destination because of the entire vibe — that makes the magic,” Michel said.

“But the market is the magnet.”

Mark Smith has a simple hope for the Siesta Key Breeze trolley service.

“That it be here forever and ever on end,” the Siesta Key Chamber of Commerce chairman said at Monday’s ribbon-cutting ceremony for Siesta Key’s new openair circulator service.

County staff and island lead-

ers gathered near the Siesta Key Village gazebo March 21 to commemorate not only the new transportation option but also Siesta Key Beach’s recent Trip Advisor ranking as America’s top beach.

The trolley service was made possible with a partial grant from the Florida Department of Transportation. The grant is due to expire in August, making the future of the service uncertain.

“This is a pilot project,” Sara-

sota County Area Transit Director Rocky Burke said at the event.

“We don’t know where it’s going or how it’s going to turn out.”

The free circulator was billed by proponents as a solution to traffic congestion on the key. It runs every 20 minutes from Siesta Key Village to Turtle Beach between 10 a.m. and 6 p.m. Off season, it will run every 30 minutes from 8 a.m. to 10 a.m. and 6 p.m. to 11:59 p.m.

“Three trolleys are going to be circulating,” Burke said. “People want frequency more than anything else.”

Although the future of the project is unknown, Smith already has ideas on how to improve the service including extending the route along Higel Avenue. He would also like to pursue the possibility of adding supplemental parking for those coming from the mainland south of the Crescent Beach.

“We can fine tune it,” he said.

Siesta Key and county leaders hope maintaining high ridership

numbers will increase the likelihood of the trolley’s longevity on the island.

“You get as many people as possible in the next few months to ride this thing,” County Commissioner Alan Maio told island stakeholders during his address at the ribbon-cutting ceremony.

“So when it comes time to extend it, we have bonafide numbers on the use and the need.”

Island interests are continuing to campaign for the trolley service. Many wore stickers that read “I rode the Siesta Key Breeze Trolley. It’s free” as they boarded the vehicle for its inaugural ride.

Siesta Key leaders have long lobbied for a public transit trolley. Although some believe there is still more to be done, for now, they are enjoying the Breeze.

“This has been going on for a decade and it has been culminating into today,” Smith said. “It’s been a long ride.”

opposite reaction. This could be it: At what point will voters’ rejection of additional density constitute a government taking? At what point will it trigger Florida’s Bert Harris Act, the law created in 1995 to protect Florida property owners from government imposing an unfair regulatory burden that precludes an owner from the use of his property in favor of a benefit for the public (see below).

Consider the Mote property. Six decades ago, when the newly formed town platted the island, it designated dozens of plats for commercial use. The Mote property was one of them.

But 40 years later, after nearly 100% of the Key was built out, it became obvious the original platting created an excess of commercial plats. That’s evident by the fact virtually all of the commercial centers on Longboat Key — with the exception of the Shoppes at Bay Isles — are aging and deteriorating.

There hasn’t been a new commercial building constructed in three decades. In short, the Key has reached equilibrium with the amount of commercial property the Key’s residences support.

And even at its current balance, every commercial property owner struggles.

So for nearly two decades, the late Bill Mote and now the Mote Scientific Foun-

arasota folks can be forgiven if they didn’t hear the loud-and-clear cry on election night from across the bay over new development. While a few thousand mainland voters chose from a slate of eight City Commission candidates, more than 75% the electorate on Longboat Key swatted away a pair of ballot issues asking for additional residential development.

They don’t want any more. No new development over and above what exists. No additional residential development over and above what they capped in 1984.

Cars. Ambience. Quality of life.

Those were all justifications Longboat voters used to reject the referendums.

And those arguments aren’t unique to island residents. Sarasota residents often say the same things.

Funny how things change. In the wake of Longboats hotels-to-condos boom from 2004 to 2008, the island lost 250 hotel units. Every commercial enterprise on the Key suffered. Potential homebuyers dwindled.

Longboat residents and town commissioners recognized the Key needed to keep alive the few restaurants and retailers that were here and keep full the pipeline of potential homebuyers.

In 2008, voter approval to create a tourism pool of 250 units was near 90%.

Today, Longboaters are mad about traffic.

As a result, in two years, they overwhelmingly rejected — almost in a complete reversal of 2008 margins — five referendums to increase density.

We’ve cited the extraordinariness of the vote in 2016, when Longboat voters denied longtime Longboat Key property owner Oscar Parsons the ability to convert the top floor of his Harbour Square office building to one unit of residential use. One unit. What makes it even more extraordinary is the fact for many years it was zoned residential. Parsons converted it to commercial use, and then wanted to go back to what it originally was.

But the voters said no. For one unit!

A little more than a week ago, Longboat voters rejected Brista Homes’ request to convert from commercial use to residential use and allow up to 10 units at 5630 Gulf of Mexico Drive.

This is the property owned by the Mote Scientific Foundation, a notfor-profit that would have benefited from the sale of the property to Brista.

But not even to help the foundation of the founder of Mote Marine Laboratory did Longboat voters budge.

Such unyielding intransigence on density is not surprising if you know Longboat Key history. But for every action, there usually is an equal and

which in fairness should be borne by the public at large.

“The owner may demonstrate such an ‘inordinate burden’ by showing either (1) that the property has been unfairly singled out to bear a ‘disproportionate’ share of the regulatory burden imposed to meet a legitimate governmental end, or (2) that the owner is now permanently unable to attain reasonable, investment-backed expectations for use of the property.

A losing bet.

At the same time, the directors of the Mote Foundation see the land’s intrinsic value is more than $1.1 million. They don’t want to give it away.

Why should the foundation be forced — because of government-imposed regulations (e.g. residential density cap and oversupply of commercial plats) — to sell well below the intrinsic value of the land? Should not the foundation be afforded the same opportunities as, say, its neighbors?

Or, consider the Bert Harris Act: An owner has a claim of injury if the remaining uses for the property after the government-imposed restrictions represent an unreasonable range.

There is no need for more commercial space on Longboat. The Mote board should not be forced to use the property unprofitably or to its detriment.

The best use for the Mote property is residential. But the voters and town forbid it.

Seems like, feels like, looks like a taking.

Diana Corrigan, executive director of the St. Armands Circle Association, said merchants are sensitive to spending issues after discovering the cost of a special assessment to build a parking garage — but added that not everyone is aware of the amount of work Rappaport did while serving on the BID. Gavin Meshad, the other BID board member present at Tuesday’s meeting, strongly advocated for the value of an executive director. “We’ve fleshed out a lot of good ideas, but we don’t have someone to take the ball and run with it — and were running out of time,” Meshad said.

When I moved to Sarasota two years ago, I was impressed by not only the city but also by the several green open spaces that were within the city itself. What a delightful sight.

However, while recently bicycling on the Legacy Trail, I heard the constant and distinctive “beep, beep, beep” of tractors busy at work clearing the land adjacent to the trail. This used to be a large meadow (with cows grazing!) that almost made me feel like I was in the country. So, instead of birds singing there will be the sounds of building hundreds of new homes.

Everywhere I look there is construction and new homes going in, apparently with no thought given to the city’s infrastructure. With every new home bought, there will be approximately two new cars on the road. That means thousands of additional cars to our overloaded streets. It also means far fewer birds — egrets, sandhill cranes, ibises. Rip down the environment and existing trees, and they will have no place to nest.

While contracting companies and real estate agents walk away with cash in their pockets, the residents of Sarasota are left with an infrastructure that was never meant to be this overloaded with resulting gridlock.

Are city planners even paying attention? Will building continue on every scrap of green space until there are none left? Is that what we want for our lovely city?

Colleagues have described Marty Rappaport, founder and former chairman of the St. Armands Business Improvement District, as an irreplaceable member of the community.

Now that Rappaport is settling into retirement, though, the BID is tasked with the challenge of replacing him. To get someone to take on that responsibility, the group might be willing to pay.

On Tuesday, the BID discussed hiring an executive director to oversee the taxing district.

Although the board agreed it could not accomplish the same amount of work as Rappaport in a volunteer role, two members were split on whether a director was the best use of the BID’s money.

The objection came from BID board member Michael Valentino, who owns Island Pursuit on St. Armands Circle. Valentino said his concerns developed recently because of a meeting with the St. Armands Circle Association.

The officer spoke with a man with a small cut on his forehead.

The man said he and his fiancee were at a hotel bar, having drinks during the course of an evening.

The couple met another man at the bar, and everyone was getting along fine. Over the course of the night, everyone became more intoxicated, and the other man made a comment to his fiancee that upset them both. The next thing he knew, the man said, the

BRANCHING OUT 6:19 a.m. — 1100 block of South Osprey Avenue Property damage: An officer responded to a complaint regarding a falling tree. The officer found a branch obstructing traffic on the street. Another tree branch had fallen onto a resident’s car, causing damage to the rear end of the vehicle. The officer provided a case number to the owner of the vehicle for insurance purposes. The city was notified of the incident and employees responded to remove the branch.

The man said he did not wish to press charges. The other man provided the same story, and said he got hit first when their argument escalated. The other man also did not want to press charges. Hotel management said both parties could stay in the hotel that night, but both had to check out first thing in the morning. Both parties agreed to call it a night and went to their rooms without further incident.

CROSSED WIRES 6:26 p.m. — 3100 block of North Tamiami Trail Dispute: An officer responded to a dispute at a cellphone store between an employee and two customers. The customers said they were trying to buy a phone and received the wrong products.

The customers also said they were charged too much on their bill. The employee said he gave the customers what they asked for and that they would need to go through the business’ corporate owners to get a refund. The officer told everybody involved this was a civil dispute.

CRASH CONFUSION 1 p.m. — 2400 block of Leon Avenue Suspicion: A woman discovered rear-end damage to her son’s car while it was parked in the driveway, so she called police.

The woman said her son was out of town and that she did not believe the car had damage until recently, but she was not sure.

The woman said she would need to speak to her son to be certain the damage wasn’t already there.

An officer encouraged the woman to talk to her son, so he could report the damage and when it occurred, if necessary.

City staff rallies support for co-worker City staff organized a fundraiser to help support Les Urbanski and his family following his cancer diagnosis.

When Les Urbanski found out he had advanced lung cancer in November, the first thing on his mind was family.

His family encouraged him to focus on the fight ahead of him, against a disease that would give him six months to live if left untreated, doctors said.

But Urbanski, a husband and father of four, was accustomed to being the primary breadwinner, and prided himself on it.

And so he wanted to make sure his affairs were in order if the worst should come — so his family was still taken care of, to the best of his ability. He called up a friend who worked as a financial adviser.

Together, they mapped out a plan as the cancer took its toll.

But he hadn’t been planning to get sick. Even with a financial road map, he was bumping into the hard realities that come with a major health setback. Weakened by the disease, he could barely talk, let alone work. He was eligible for disability benefits via Social Security, but not until June.

For six months, he had to make things work without a paycheck.

“What do I do, sell the house?”

thoughts he grappled with.

“What are my options?”

Urbanski’s co-workers noticed his absence at City Hall. Urbanski is a computer support specialist in the city’s information technology department, a role in which he earned recognition as employee of the year in 2011.

Kathy King, an executive assistant in the city manager’s office, was taken aback when she found out why Urbanski hadn’t been at work. King wasn’t in the same building as Urbanski when she started working, but they struck up a friendship through a carpool

The carpool eventually stopped, but their connection didn’t. She knew Urbanski as a family man, met his kids when they piled into the car on Take Our Daughters and Sons to Work Day. When she got a text from him in December telling her about his illness, she knew the challenges he was facing.

“I said, ‘I’ve got to do something,’ ” King said. “He’s going to be broke — I’ve got to do a fundraiser or something.”

King didn’t have much experience organizing an effort like

this. But she had been to a similar event a few years earlier at Big Top Brewing Co., so she reached out to the business as a potential venue. Working with fellow city employees Michele Keeler and Karen Grassett, she helped set up a March 10 fundraiser — an opportunity to raise a glass to Les. “I was hoping to get 50 people to come and spend $15 to get in,” King said. “I said ‘Wow, if I could raise $750, that would be really great.’”

When King asked Urbanski if he was OK with the idea, he gave the go-ahead, but he wasn’t expecting too much. He wasn’t in it for the money — he didn’t like asking for help. He saw support from friends as a valuable tool during treatment.

When he showed up to the brewery, more than 100 people were there to welcome him.

Despite the circumstances that brought everyone together, it was a joyful atmosphere.

“It was just people who were so glad to see him because they hadn’t seen him in months, and really wishing him well and hugging him,” King said. “It was really heartwarming — it was like

a family.”

When the night was over, the event had raised $4,282 for Urbanski. Since then, city employees chipped in another $150. As he goes through chemotherapy — he concluded a battery of treatment this week — the extra cash provided valuable peace of mind.

“I can sleep at night, stresswise,” Urbanski said.

More significant, Urbanski said, was the knowledge that people cared about him. He draws strength from the people who showed up to the event at Big Top, from his church, from strangers donating to an online fundraiser for his medical expenses.

“It gives you a boost,” Urbanski said. “It’s like you’re drinking a Red Bull. It gives you the desire to keep fighting.”

Urbanski has kept a positive attitude. He’s found resonance in a poem “The Dash,” which tells people to value the time they have while they’re still living. The poem is named after the dash in between someone’s date of birth and date of death.

He wants to extend his dash.

His oldest child is getting married later this year. He wants to be around for that, and for much more with the people he values most. He thinks the medicine can only go so far — and that his outlook is something that will help him get through a trying time.

“I have the desire to live,” Urbanski said. “I have so many goals. That’s what helps keep me going. And what I’ve learned so far is your family is really most important.”

“The point is that Mexico is the best ally for the American economy to make the American economy productive,” he said. “Both countries win in this equation.”

Calderon described instances where joint communication between the U.S. and Mexico led

While declining to explicitly comment on the Trump’s policies, Calderon noted the impact Mexican consumers have on the U.S. economy. Mexico, he said, is the second largest buyer of American goods. Twenty-five percent of tourists visiting the U.S. are Mexican, and those tourists to the United States spend $4 million more in the U.S. than American tourists spend in Mexico.

“This is an important issue that needs to be addressed,” Calderon said. “People on both sides of the border need each other. I believe that we can be more prosperous together.”

Although President Donald Trump has criticized the North American Free Trade Agreement, Calderon offered a counter perspective.

A tale of two portraits

RCLA ANNOUNCES 2018 TOWN HALL LINEUP It’s out with the old and in with the new for the Ringling College Library Association Town Hall Lecture Series.

As the 2017 series comes to a close, incoming RCLA Chairwoman Emily Walsh announced the 2018 roster before former Mexican President Felipe Calderon took the RCLA stage March 22.

Subscription tickets for RCLA members will go on sale on May 1. Tickets will be available to the public on June 15. Here’s the lineup:

Ringling Town Hall series student artist misses out on a face-to-face moment with world leader

meeting their subjects in person until after they’re finished, they comb through dozens of online photos to familiarize themselves with their subject.

“For us, it was a weird form of sculpting,” L’Hrar said.

The sculpting alone took L’Hrar 20 hours. The next step, creating the digital painting with digital brushstrokes, took another 15.

And then L’Hrar got an email from faculty member Valerie Strenk: “I need to see you in my office immediately.”

He assumed the worst. “I don’t know what I did, but it was a good portrait,” L’Hrar thought as he rushed to see Strenk.

But it wasn’t the portrait that was the issue. It was its subject.

Annan cancelled his Town Hall appearance citing illness, sending organizers into a lurch and L’Hrar back to the drawing board.

A Ringling Town Hall speaker hasn’t canceled since 2014.

It presented an administrative and artistic challenge. Ringling needed a new speaker — and a new portrait.

For L’Hrar, the situation was more personal: the honor of presenting his portrait to Annan was now an impossibility.

But L’Hrar had a new portrait to create — that of the 56th Mexican president, Felipe Calderon, who spoke on March 22.

The work took 20 hours.

“Mr. Calderon was a little easier,” L’Hrar said. “I guess I had already done the whole process with Kofi Annan of figuring out

Since January, Ringling College of Art and Design student Nahman L’Hrar has created two portraits.

Both depicted world leaders and were created using the same medium for the same event.

But one was not supposed to exist.

Every year, Ringling College of Art and Design students submit portfolios in hopes of being selected as a Ringling Town Hall Lecture Series student artist.

Five students are selected and paired with one of the five speakers to create and present a portrait in person.

L’Hrar was paired with former Secretary General of the United Nations Kofi Annan.

“He was my top choice of all the people that were coming,” L’Hrar said. “He’s an extremely accomplished person. He has a knack for finding things that will aid the populations that really need it.”

L’Hrar got to work creating his portrait. Because he created it digitally in Photoshop, L’Hrar first needed to create a digital sculpture of Annan’s head.

“I didn’t have a picture to work off of so I don’t know if I made it right,” L’Hrar said. “I just had to construct his skull from nothing, so it’s a very stressful moment.”

On the morning of March 22, before Calderon took the stage at the Van Wezel Performing Arts Hall, L’Hrar and others gathered for the portrait’s unveiling.

Cameras clicked, but L’Hrar wasn’t fazed. He had one thing in mind.

“I’ll be able to tell (if he likes it) immediately,” L’Hrar said.

He took a black cloth off the easel and then waited.

Calderon looked at the portrait, smiled broadly and shook L’Hrar’s hand.

L’Hrar had his moment — a moment he will always value, but also one he will never have with Annan.

For now, Annan’s portrait remains in limbo. RCLA Town Hall has committed to sending him L’Hrar’s portrait, but the artist likely never get that face-toface moment with his first choice.

He’ll probably never hear what Anna has to say, but it’s hard for him to be disappointed.

“I’m pretty darn happy to meet Calderon. I got to do both portraits,” L’Hrar said. “So that’s, I mean double the fun.”

First Watch Half Marathon races through Sarasota

T

housands of runners hit the pavement the morning of March 19 for the annual First Watch Sarasota Half Marathon.

Runners took their marks at the Van Wezel Performing Arts Hall before crossing the Ringling Bridge and winding their way around St. Armands. After crossing the halfway point near the Van Wezel, runners ran through Indian Shores and back to the Van Wezel.

After completing the 13.1-mile course, participants found breakfast in more sense than one.

Race staff dressed as breakfast foods greeted finishers before pancakes and beer were served.

Jon Mott, 30, of Babson Park, was the overall men’s winner with a time of 1:14:03. Jacki Wachtel, 37 of New Port Richey, was the top female finisher with a time of 1:22.15.

hree years ago, Kinga Aletto had never so much as picked up a rifle, much less a gun of any kind. Two years ago, Lauren McMahan could have said the same thing.

In April, both Aletto and McMahan, juniors at Sarasota Military Academy, will travel to Colorado to compete in the 2017 Rifle National Junior Olympics.

There, they will compete against 750 of the best shooters in the world, including Ginny Thrasher, the American who won the air rifle gold medal at the 2016 Olympics in Rio de Janeiro.

The team itself has also found success, winning the 2016-2017 State Junior Olympics in Titusville in January and being named the Army JROTC champions.

Performing well in the Titusville competition landed Aletto and McMahan the chance to fly out to Colorado.

How did the pair get here?

Aletto, who is also an artist and won a Scholastic Art and Writing award for her painting “Field of Flowers,” was given a choice by her parents as a freshman: She could either join the school’s Junior Raider program, or join the school’s rifle team, but she had to join one. She chose rifle.

McMahan, formerly a gymnast, was persuaded by friends to join the team for her sophomore year.

They compete in air rifle, shooting their targets from 33 feet away.

There are typically three shooting positions in competitions, but in Colorado, they will only compete in standing position, which is exactly what it sounds like.

There is no sling to support the rifle while standing, making it considered the toughest position.

But it’s one where talented shooters such as Aletto and McMahan gain the upper hand on their competition.

Aletto said that the best advice she ever received from SMA’s rifle coach, Sgt. 1st Class Riess Pellegrino, was “If you’ll learn to shoot standing, you’ll be golden.”

Pellegrino could not contain himself, bursting with pride while talking about his shooters and emphasizing how difficult the sport is.

“I could not do what they do,” Pellegrino said. “I know the technique, I know what you have to do, but I could not do it with an air rifle.”

Aletto said her first time shooting a rifle did not quite go how she wanted. She shot “buckshot,” which means she scattered her shots wildly over the target instead of firing in concise groups.

Accuracy would come later.

McMahan said the sport came naturally to her, but also admitted she was filled with nerves the first time she picked up her rifle.

“I remember we were in the classroom talking about gun safety,” McMahan said. “We were talking about the gun’s ‘action,’ and I did not know what we were talking about, what that meant.

But it was cool (firing a gun for the first time), I liked it.”

The rifle team practices two to three days a week for two hours, give or take, each session. That is the easy part of the pair’s training. The harder part is the sacrifice Aletto and McMahan make to ensure their bodies run the way they want.

Pellegrino said keeping calm and stable is essential to highlevel success in shooting. That means cutting out things that mess with mental states, including coffee and other caffeine- and sugar-filled treats.

Pellegrino also noted managing relationships is important.

If a shooter gets in an argument with a friend, family member or significant other the night before a competition, it can have a negative effect on their focus.

On competition days, the pair will snack on Goldfish, oranges or cheese to make sure hunger does not strike halfway through the event. Once it’s over, Pellegrino will take the team out for doughnuts and ice cream as a reward for holding out for so long.

Aletto created a mantra she says to herself and her family: “Tokyo 2020.” It’s a reference to the next summer Olympics. What started as perhaps an overly optimistic goal has now become a realistic one. She used to wonder if it was really possible. Now, she believes it is, and although McMahan said she had not thought that far into the future, she has a good chance.

On top of being talented shooters, Pellegrino raved about what great kids both Aletto and McMahan are.

“They know they are not just representing themselves,” Pellegrino said. “They set this team above themselves. They are an integral part of the team, but they always put the team first.

“If you are truly committed, you can become the best with work and time. These two prove it. I know they will represent Sarasota with the utmost honor.”

Sarasota baseball tournament is truly a Classic Sarasota Baseball Classic is still going strong after 32 years.

I

s there anything better than a good high school baseball tournament?

OK, maybe a few things, but they’re pretty great for everyone involved. The Sarasota Baseball Classic is one of the best in the country, going on 32 years and counting. You don’t have to take my word for it: Baseball America once recognized it as such.

Clyde Metcalf, the longtime coach of Sarasota High’s baseball team, is one of the creators of the tournament, and I asked him about its origins.

“We used to have a tournament here, it was an eight-team local tournament that was sponsored by the Sarasota Sports Committee,” Metcalf said. “Larry Altier, who was the coach at Ryan Kohn

Riverview at the time, and myself got together and said, ‘Hey, we want to try to play people out of the area, bring in better competition, make it a 16-team tournament.’ That kind of came from discussions between Larry and myself to try and get it expanded.”

To make their idea happen, Metcalf and Altier went out and drummed up community support. They wanted the tournament to be not-for-profit, so they also rounded up people to serve on the tournament board and organizing committee.

They succeeded, and it’s not just players and coaches who are happy they did. Over the years, the tournament has given proceeds to the Wounded Warrior Project, the Special Olympics, the Miracle League and other organizations. This year’s beneficiaries will be announced after the conclusion of the tournament.

Because of weekly newspaper deadlines, I cannot tell you in print which team took home the trophy. I can tell you that the tournament once again brought great talent from out of the area to serve as a measuring stick for local teams. George Jenkins High, out of Lakeland, came into the tournament ranked 19th in Florida by MaxPreps. Tate High, from Cantonment, was 23rd.

Venice High sits at 37th in the entire country. They’ve also attracted a team from out of the state entirely. It’s a testament to Metcalf and the rest of the organizing committee that they keep getting these high-level teams year after year.

It makes for great baseball to watch, no matter your rooting interest.

On March 20, Sarasota High shut out George Jenkins 1-0 behind the arm of senior Brooks Larson, who allowed four base­runners the entire game. The same night, Cardinal Mooney defeated Braden River 7-6 on a walk-off, hit-by-pitch. That’s not something you see every day (or week, or year). Another game between two out-of-area teams was decided by a sacrifice bunt in the final inning.

I don’t care if it’s high school baseball, that is exciting stuff.

None of it would be possible if two coaches hadn’t put in the work to make it happen 32 years ago.

Metcalf said he still gets a thrill out of the tournament, and that was evident watching him work, dapping up his players at third base and badgering his pitchers to throw strikes with a late lead.

The players love it, too, he said.

It’s the largest collection of talent they’ll go up against outside of travel-ball season, and every player wants to prove themselves against the best.

Over the years, the tournament has given proceeds to the Wounded Warrior Project, the Special Olympics, the Miracle League and other organizations. around, and if you’ve never attended, I urge you to attend a game or two next year and let the sharp ping of metal bat on ball ring through your eardrums.

Helping to raise money for fantastic charities is a swell bonus.

It’s also a great excuse to have some peanuts and Cracker Jack, and goodness knows we could all use a few of those.

When did you start playing baseball?

I started playing baseball in Vermont at around 5 years old. My parents pushed me along, got me to play T-ball a little bit, and then I just kept playing.

What is the appeal of baseball to you?

I like baseball because I have always been able to excel at it.

I’m able to go on and do my thing, and it just happens for me. It’s really hard to explain in a sense. It just kind of happens.

What is your best skill on the field?

Being able to go out there and know that I can compete. I know there is no moment too big.

Do you have a favorite baseball memory?

The skill and drive everyone has to go in and keep competing and winning all the time is amazing.

If the suit fits Fitness competitors spend months perfecting their physiques. When it comes to dressing them for the stage, there are few better than June Blaustein.

C

hoose a job you love, and you’ll never work a day in your life — or so the adage goes.

It may be a cliche, but June Blaustein lends a level of veracity to that phrase.

She’s not a classically trained designer or even a seamstress. In fact, she’s a speech pathologist, yet she spends most of her days sitting in her studio gluing rhinestones to what a layman might misidentify as a bikini.

“It’s not the same as a regular bathing suit,” Blaustein said.

Although it resembles what one might see at a swimming pool, it’s not for swimming. The suits are meticulously designed for Blaustein’s clients — a group once broadly identified as female bodybuilders.

Bodybuilding has become specialized and highly competitive, and some participants prefer to identify as “fitness competitors.”

Female athletes compete in either bikini, figure or physique divisions, each requiring a specific body build and attire. When it comes to navigating those particulars, Blaustein has made herself an expert.

The suits “have to fit perfectly in order to show off the hard

work, but tastefully,” longtime client and local competitor Holly Beck said.

“June is just excellent at it,” she said.

Blaustein began designing garments in 1984 for ballroom dancers, but about 10 years ago, her creations took on a new look thanks to a request from local fitness competitor Edith Driver.

“Can you make one of these?”

Blaustein remembers Driver asking. “And she held up this little bitty thing.” She can’t help but laugh when she remembers her introduction to the world of fitness competition. Still, she cautiously agreed to do the work.

Her first suit was an experiment

of trial and error. It was a puzzle, and Blaustein was determined to solve it.

The stakes are high when constructing a suit for fitness competitors, making it all the more challenging. Not only are their features augmented by rigorous weight lifting, any gap in the fabric could cost athletes on stage.

“I want to make sure it fits like paint,” Blaustein said.

While making her first suit, she had one thing in mind.

“Oh my God, I hope it fits,” she remembers thinking after finishing Driver’s suit.

In the end, it did fit, and Driver’s suit became the first of hundreds she has constructed in the course of 10 years.

Despite her success, there was

no epiphany for Blaustein — no moment that compelled her to solely design suits for elite athletes. It was a series of little successes that kept her interested.

“It’s kind of like problem-solving, which is also a lot of fun,” Blaustein said. “If something doesn’t fit, I’ll make it again until I get it right.”

She is as devoted to her work as she is proud of it, a characteristic that has garnered her a strong following.

“There are a million ways for it to go wrong, and that has never happened,” Beck said. “She’s always there, she’s always been consistent.”

Blaustein doesn’t advertise.

She lets her work speak for itself.

She maintains a regular and ever-growing clientele and has fostered friendships with repeat customers, like Beck, who has called on Blaustein to design her competition attire for nearly a decade.

Blaustein welcomes her clients into her studio — a little haven tucked in the rear of the house she shares with her mother and their pet birds.

Her studio is kind of organized chaos where each piece of fabric and jewel have a place.

She spends hours on end at her desk, making up to 70 suits a year.

She charges between $250 and $1,000 depending on the intricacy of the design. Each can take between six and 12 hours to make, but Blaustein doesn’t mind.

For her, there are the careers that people have to do. They’re stereotypically practical.

But her design work isn’t like that. It’s her happy career.

“As long as I can keep doing this, I’m really happy,” Blaustein said.

Students trade typical break for altruistic alternative

T

he wake-up alarms of seven Sarasota high schoolers rang early March 18.

By 7:30 a.m., the students had gathered at 2312 Pershing Ave., to take part in a Habitat for Humanity Sarasota project on the final day of Alternative Spring Break, a national program facilitated by the Boys & Girls Clubs of Sarasota County.

The program offers volunteer opportunities to students during school breaks.

The students grabbed paint and brushes and went to work creating a fresh living space.

Earlier that week, 75 area students volunteered at Girls Inc. of Sarasota County, Friendship Centers and All Faiths Food Bank. The students earned a total of 500 service hours.

“It’s a big undertaking,” said Boys & Girls Club Director of Teen Outreach Suriya Khong.

“But they come here with smiles on their faces ready to work.”

ogs and cats weren’t the only furry friends wandering around March 17 at the Humane Society of Sarasota County during its Spring Break Camp.

Llamas, lambs and rabbits all meandered around the courtyard as a row of children listened to the animals’ handlers give presentations on their four-legged friends.

The children listened until it was their turn to meet their guests. Although the youngsters were cautious at first, it wasn’t long before the group broke off into pairs and trios, bouncing from one group of animals to the next.

Chickens also roamed around the feet of their larger barnyard counterparts from McG’s Farm. Owner Susan McGonegal said she likes bringing her animals to education events.

“Some of these kids have never seen farm animals,” McGonegal said.

All the animals were a hit, but in the end, the bunnies won the day. After making the rounds, most of the children settled under a tree cuddling all the available rabbits in the shade.

Humane Society Community Outreach Coordinator Ginny Armington watched the children, her face set in a content grin.

“It teaches them to be kind,” Armington said while watching the chaotic interactions between the children and animals.

“When they interact with them, they feel that bond,” Armington said. “So, I hope this will create a better future for all animals.”

espite the slight nip in the air March 15, spring had sprung in the Michael’s On East ballroom for the Everything is Coming Up Flowers fashion show put on by the St. Michael the Archangel Catholic Church Women’s Guild.

Temple celebrates Dr. Seuss

S

illiness was the order of the day March 9 at Temple Emanu-El’s Early Learning Center.

Students dressed in red and blue outfits in honor of the Dr. Seuss classic “One Fish, Two Fish, Red Fish, Blue Fish” and participated in Dr. Seussthemed activities after a reading of the book.

Children painted their red fish and blue fish, fished with pretzel and cream cheese fishing rods and got their faces painted in the image of one of the Dr. Seuss’s most beloved characters — the Cat in the Hat. By the end of the lesson, many children were sporting little pink and black noses and whiskers of their own.
