YOUR TOWN
STILL DIVIDED
Lido Key still needs sand. Siesta Key groups still oppose the plan to get it. The courts will decide what’s next.
Sendoff snapshots Ah, the first day of school. We can almost hear the patter of new tennis shoes on freshly cleaned tile and the collective sigh of relief as parents drop their little ones off at school. It’s a big day, and the Sarasota Observer wants to give your student the spotlight he or she deserves. Send your snapshots to abrugmann@ yourobserver.com and we’ll include them in our first day online photo gallery. Please include names of all children pictured.

T
he latest legal battle between representatives from Lido Key and Siesta Key over the proposed Big Pass dredging project has been postponed for several months, continuing a fight that has divided the adjacent barrier islands for nearly 20 years. An administrative hearing was planned for later this month but was rescheduled after an attorney for the Florida Department of Environmental Protection underwent surgery, which will require at least two months of recovery. “It’s very disappointing, to say the least,” said Lido Key Residents Association President Carl Shoffstall. “It’s been dragged out a long time already.”
Milk the day
Sarasota mothers teamed up on Aug. 5 to raise awareness for breast feeding mothers at the Sarasota Farmers Market. More than 60 mothers and supporters gathered in an attempt to break the local record for the most simultaneous breast feeding mothers.
