FULFILLING THE PLAYERS CENTRE’S MISSION PROMOTING THE ARTS THROUGH VALUED PARTNERSHIPS The Players Centre’s primary mission is to entertain, educate and engage the community through high-quality live theatre. A major, ongoing component of this is our partnership with arts organizations across the Suncoast, which is accomplished in a variety of ways. The Players Centre believes that, together, these organizations – unique in the art forms each provides to patrons regionwide – can help inspire more people to tap into their inner creativity.

These partnerships are an imperative piece of our mission, as we unite with you to fulfill the move to Lakewood Ranch – and it will continue to be important when staging shows in Waterside Place for years to come. We championed this 92nd season as an opportunity to reinforce those valuable partnerships with every show The Players Centre has produced, before the debut of “Studio 1130” in December. As you probably noticed, we used the historic Sarasota

Municipal Auditorium for our performance of Falsettos after staging [title of show] at Art Center Sarasota! Every move we make places us a step closer to the end of The Players Centre’s path to Lakewood Ranch. The spaces we’ve utilized this season have given us the opportunity to think outside the box and produce creative shows that you, the audience, can’t experience anywhere else! It’s also presented us with a chance to honor the historic cultural impact of these venues. Art Center Sarasota, for instance, was the area’s first arts organization, and the Sarasota Municipal Auditorium was once the Sarasota Orchestra’s performance home. We plan to continue this partnership with various organizations long after The Players Centre’s two-stage, multi-use performing arts home is built. Our hope is to foster inclusiveness by providing access to shared office spaces, allotting time on the performance calendar and offering additional services to other arts groups. All of this can be accomplished while preserving a footprint in Sarasota – the place where our legacy began and still lives. The Players Centre looks forward to continuing to cater to the community that started it all while expanding our influence to one that is just beginning its arts journey.

My hope is that the seeds The Players Centre has already planted continue to grow and evolve in ways that nurture epic changes in the heart of the community over and over again. I think loving what you do, striving for higher levels of excellence and welcoming a larger world view are the keys to 90 more years.

Q: Overall, how have the arts touched your life? A: The performing arts is very sacred to me. Growing up, my mom helped me understand the importance of my faith. She helped me build a firm foundation of love and prayer. She taught me how to use my divine gifts to be a blessing to others. She’d say, “Remember… You are the gift.” That connection to the light within carried me to The Players Centre, Asolo Repertory Theatre, Sarasota Opera House, West Coast Black Theatre Troupe, the Oscars, movies, the Met, Broadway’s The Color Purple, Rock of Ages and much more. I performed on stages with stars such as Chaka Khan, Hugh Jackman, Fantasia Barrino and so many other greats.

Most importantly, it gave me a greater appreciation for humanity. It showed me how precious life is. I’m honored to say that the performing arts was the vehicle to all these things and more.

Q: How does The Players

Centre’s move to Lakewood Ranch promote the arts regionwide?

A: Sometimes I take a drive to that area just to feel where it’s headed. Honestly, the move there will be innovative because there’s not much live entertainment that way. All over again, The Players Centre will be initiating a change for the arts in that area and the southern region. It’s closer to the highway, so surrounding areas will be more interested in coming and participating. This larger facility will give more jobs and creative opportunities to the people in our community, promoting expanded outreach and great entertainment for our area and beyond. Although Sarasota is known for its artistic community, there’s always room for more. Over 90 years deserves a bigger platform. It just feels like Sarasota and the Lakewood Ranch region are becoming Florida’s Hollywood. It’s a great plan to be there.

Q: Why is donating to the Center Stage Capital Campaign important?

Following my heart and soul changed the way I see the world. My mother was raised in the country. Her desire and drive to conquer her dreams was passed on to my brother and me. Seeing her work nights to care for us as a single mother instilled the desire and drive it took to follow my dreams. I’ve always been so inspired by her and all the folks who saw the light in me. They helped water the seeds to success my mother planted. This journey has taught me so much about life and a lot about how things work behind the scenes.

A: It’s worth the investment. My life and the lives of so many others have been greatly affected because of our experiences – great and small – at The Players Centre. It takes producers, financial backing from the city, those with a little bit and great hearts to build an artistic environment that flourishes beyond the investment. Abundant seeds cultivate growth in more ways than one. The Players Centre’s legendary service to this community speaks for itself. I know many others would love to donate and be a part of this legacy.

WHAT YOU’VE MISSED SO FAR THIS SEASON If you’ve missed shows we’ve staged so far during The Players Centre’s 92nd season, don’t worry! As we open the curtain for Forbidden Broadway, which runs throughout January, here’s a peek at the spectacular performances that preceded it this year!

FALSETTOS CLOSES NOVEMBER IN THE FINEST FASHION!

Falsettos, which showcases strong themes of Jewish identity, gender roles and family, thrilled audiences throughout November at the Sarasota Municipal Auditorium! It was a perfect blend of superb acting, spectacular sets from Ken Junkins, detailed costumes provided by Georgina Willmott and captivating lighting designs created by Michael Pasquini. “Bravo to The Players Centre for bringing Falsettos back to this area in such a fine fashion,” said Talkin’ Broadway, a website providing nationwide theatre news.

HERE’S YOUR CHANCE TO AUDITION FOR A ROLE IN OUR SPECTACULAR SHOWS! MISSED A CHRISTMAS CAROL? JIM FLOYD PLAYED EVERY PART!

Jim Floyd, who performed in roughly half the shows produced during The Players Centre’s 91st season, was the star of A Christmas Carol once again Dec. 22 and 23! Our second year of this Charles Dickens-inspired fundraiser, which helps support programs and classes we offer, was a success. Floyd played more than 20 characters as a one-man show, directed by Jeffery Kin, The Players Centre’s Producing Artistic Director.

THE MARVELOUS WONDERETTES DEBUTS ‘STUDIO 1130’

The Marvelous Wonderettes took center stage in December at The Players Centre’s newly opened “Studio 1130” performance venue located in the Crossings at Siesta Key! It was only fitting that this popular show, which incorporates your favorite songs from the 1950s and 60s, debuted the stellar capabilities of our roughly 150-seat temporary space. While we’ve enjoyed partnering with arts organizations across the Suncoast the past several months, we’re excited to spend the remainder of our 92nd season in a venue of our own!

As Sarasota’s premier organization for new music, EnsembleNewSRQ has been busy commissioning new works. The latest is “Void,” a co-commission with Atlanta’s ensemble Vim, in which New Renaissance artist Elizabeth A. Baker will introduce the audience to her performance art. Baker’s work blends visual and auditory mediums and plays with the mixture of electronic and acoustic music. If you’re looking to expand your horizons, this is one not to miss.

In this triple bill, the Sarasota Ballet explores the themes of romantic love and its opposite — hurt and betrayal. The program highlights a nearly lost work of Sir Frederick Ashton that Director Iain Webb worked to bring back to the stage for its American premiere in 2012.

What opera season would be complete without a little Puccini? The Sarasota Opera will perform this three-act tragedy as one part of its winter season. Get lost in this story, set in the beauty of Rome, as love tangos with the law in this classic showing of Puccini’s mastery.

THE PLAYERS CENTRE: A STEP CLOSER TO STAGING THE FUTURE OF ARTS AND CULTURE Community theatre harnesses the power of locally produced creativity – spectacular shows, programs and classes developed at every level by invested volunteers – to foster better neighborhoods and cities across the United States. For nearly a century, The Players Centre for Performing Arts has championed this fun and unique style, which plays a lead role in positively impacting thousands of people annually along Florida’s Cultural Coast. Our impending move to Lakewood Ranch further expands the influence of arts and culture to the nation’s fastest-growing multi-generational community, while providing easy access to high-quality live theatre located just east of the I-75 corridor.

The Center Stage Capital Campaign, overall, presents a major opportunity for growth eastward – all while maintaining a footprint in Sarasota through continued work at our shop space and The Players Studio, which are centrally located downtown.

I was 14 years old when I got the starring role as Lutiebelle Gussie Mae Jenkins. The experience changed my life forever.

Q: How does an organization like The Players Centre

positively impact the community? Community theatre has an influence on people of all ages, and the proof is right in front of us. Teresa Stanley, who has performed on Broadway, in movies and onstage regionally across the Suncoast, experienced that lasting impact as a child. The Players Centre has given everyday people on the Cultural Coast an outlet to explore their creativity – and Teresa is one of those faces! This is where your donations to the Center Stage Capital Campaign come into play. These gifts and our partnership with you help us reach more people like Teresa. Q: How did you find community theatre? A: My Mother, Rosa Lewis, taught me all she knew about singing. She taught me by my singing in church with her. After we relocated to Sarasota from Panama City, I started singing more in this area. There was a production of Purlie at The Players Centre. Nate Jacobs was directing, and he asked me to audition, singing numbers from the show. I took the cassette tape and learned “I Got Love” and “Purlie.”

A: For over 90 years, The Players Centre has impacted so many lives. As this rebirth process is happening, keeping in touch with the heart and soul of the vision is so important. The performing arts can make a better world. The entertainment industry shifts mindsets – specially through music and content that remind us of how we all connect to and feel that light in our souls. The reason why so many of us leave the theatre feeling hope, happy, free, tingly inside, inspired and seen is because entertainment helps us take a heartfelt look at different cultural experiences through representation and love. We celebrate different cultures, and our differences are more alike than we think. We focus on touching hearts – everything starts with the heart. The works of art that The Players Centre presents, while having fun and dropping seeds of excellence, should remind folks of what’s most important: love, family, integrity, following your dreams and enjoying life. That makes the work ethic and everything else fall in place. The Color Purple impacted my life in that way. Everybody from the ushers, cleaners, musicians, performers, directors, writers, conductors, light designers, sound technicians and even the stagehands – everybody involved loved what they were doing. Everybody worked together bringing the excellence of their gifts to the table so that it could be a great show every night. Many folks, to this day, share about its life-changing effect on them.
