Join in on a game of bocce or a sit in on an educational lecture. There is so much to choose from, the possibilities are endless. And it is not just a possibility, but everyday life here at Plymouth Harbor. Enjoy a rich myriad of activities surrounded by spectacular views of Sarasota Bay. SNOOK HAVEN Snook Haven combines Southern homestyle cooking with front-row seats on the Myakka River and all its natural splendor. If you’re not here for the legendary barbecue, tuck into a big old platter of fried catfish and add a side of fried green tomatoes. If you want to go native, consider the smoked gator sausage hot dog (100% gator meat), topped with onions and peppers and drizzled with whiskey sauce. (Try not to feel guilty if you spy one of its lazy lizard relatives snoozing on the riverbank.) In the mood to continue your Southern taste adventure? Load up on bountiful sides of collard greens, red rice and beans, and black-eyed peas. And then just sit back, dig the sizzling sounds from the live band (check out the entertainment calendar on their website), and watch the river flow. Location: 5000 E. Venice Ave., Venice Call: 485-7221 Info: SnookHaven.com The smoked gator sausage hot dog is topped with onions, peppers and whiskey sauce.

PHILLIPPI CREEK OYSTER BAR AND RESTAURANT Phillippi Creek has been a port of call for locals and savvy tourists for more than four decades. This family-friendly place has a kitschy-cute nautical decor, picnic-style tables and a closeup view of the creek and its critters. Where to begin? Might as well start with a boatload of oysters — the baked oyster combo offers a tasty selection of Buffalo oysters, seafood-stuffed oysters, Parmesan garlic oysters and oysters Rockefeller. (If you need an excuse to indulge, remember that oysters are high in omega 3 fatty acids, potassium and magnesium.) And if you’re a Florida foodie, come back during stone crab claw season (Oct. 15 to May 15), so you can dine to your heart’s content on fresh-from-the-Gulf claws steamed and ready to be cracked open. Dip that rich, buttery meat into Chef Pedro Flores’ bewitching Key lime mustard sauce, and don’t even think about leaving room for dessert. (But if you do, go for the Key lime pie, ya hear?) Location: 5353 S. Tamiami Trail Call: 925-4444 Info: CreekSeafood.com
Indulge yourself with a superb seafood sensation found in a boatload of oysters (top), or simply enjoy the spectacular waterfront views from the deck (above).

JR’S OLD PACKINGHOUSE CAFÉ Known for its shabby-chic charm, rollicking roots music and no-fuss grub, JR’s Old Packinghouse Cafe has been a favorite local watering hole for close to 20 years. It rose like a phoenix from the ashes after a fire nearly destroyed it in 2016. Today, owner J.R. Garraus is back in business with an enticing lineup of comfort chow, including the tastiest Cuban sandwiches in the Sunshine State. (Fun fact: The Cuban sandwich was invented in Florida — just ask the cigar rollers in Ybor City.) JR’s famous Pan Con Lechón stars shredded roasted pork, slathered generously with a garlicky mojo sauce and served between two slices of buttery n’ crusty Cuban bread. ¡Viva el sándwich Cubano! Another must-try here is the shrimp po’ boy, blissfully batter-dipped and fried with a Creole-style remoulade sauce and served up on a hoagie roll. All this spicy stuff will keep you reaching for the ever-flowing beer. Kick back at the convivial bar inside, or kick up your heels to bonerattling local rockabilly music outside.
Your taste buds will never be the same after sampling JR’s famous Pan Con Lechón (top) or the Creole-inspired shrimp po’boy (above).

CORTEZ KITCHEN When you visualize old-time Florida fare, sushi probably doesn’t come to mind. Ah, but what if it’s grouper sushi? Even better, what if it’s served at Cortez Kitchen, a laid-back, dockside seafood eatery in Cortez Village? That’s right, you can have your sushi here and eat it, too. You can also feast on a heaping plate of fried oysters, cheese grits and hush puppies if you need a little more Florida in your fare. Any way you cut it, this authentic waterfront hangout is as Old Florida as it gets. To enjoy fresher fish, you’d have to catch it yourself. On the weekends, the hard-rocking local bands are pretty fresh, too. Location: 4528 119th St. W.,
