History on display
As the country celebrates its 250th anniversary, the public also has a chance to take a look at Sarasota’s history. Last year, Thomsen Fine Art hosted a series of paintings that formerly hung in the SRQ Sarasota-Bradenton International Airport. Gallery staff worked with Ciera Coleman, the city’s public art administrator, to ensure these art pieces remain accessible and do not disappear into private collections. The result is the ongoing “Echoes of Sarasota” Cultural Heritage Exhibition. Eight works by Regan Dunnick, and three by Frank Hopper (above), are now on display at City Hall, while three additional works, one created by Hopper and two by Dunnick, are currently on display at the Van Wezel Performing Arts Hall, located at 777 N. Tamiami Trail in Sarasota.

A generous gift
The Exchange, established in 1962, uses funds from its consignment operation to award grants and scholarships supporting the arts in Sarasota and Manatee counties. This year, it announced awards totaling $500,000, an amount reached only once before, at a June 11 event. “These funds often arrive at pivotal moments and can make a meaningful difference for both organizations and emerging artists,” said Karen Koblenz, executive director and CEO of The Exchange, in a media release. Twenty-five regional groups received support for arts and cultural projects, 27 students received scholarships for pursuing studies in the arts and 10 organizations received funding through the Elizabeth Lindsay Arts in Education grant. $0.10
