Teamwork in the cards for dad, son

Scott Johnson, his wife, Sue Johnson, and his sister, Lori Johnson-Kern, came out to pay respects to Mickey Johnson, the father of Scott and Lori.

Memorial miles

Lori Johnson-Kern describes her late father, Mickey Johnson, as someone who wouldn’t miss the Manasota Track Club’s beach runs “for anything.” “He loved the Manasota Track Club and all the people.’’ The club’s first Siesta Key beach run of the season is always the Mickey Johnson Memorial 5K, which was June 2. The run remembers the Nokomis resident, who died in 2017 after he was struck by a vehicle while cycling in Venice. She said the turnout for the event was “great” each year. “We’re very honored and grateful that they’re still doing this,” she said.

Sailing through the years Jan and Tim Solomon had long enjoyed sailing with Sally Reed and her late husband, Tom Reed, who operated the Key Sailing charter business out of Marina Jack. However, the couple were surprised when it was announced during one voyage that the Reeds would be selling them the business. “I thought it would be too fun,” Tim Solomon said. Nonetheless, the Solomons are beginning their 20th year at the helm of the yacht. They celebrated the company’s 30th anniversary, which was June 1, with one of their favorite activities: sailing. That included “taking out some of our favorite guests,” with a trip planned for Sally Reed, as well. “It really has been a fairytale,” said Jan Solomon. “Tim and I still love each other more and more every day.”
