A record number of dogs and cats found new homes over the course of one weekend when 147 pets were adopted from the Humane Society of Sarasota County.

The shelter participated in the Petco Love Florida Mega Adoption Event, a statewide initiative held June 19-21 that aimed to place 2,000 pets in homes in a single weekend.

Locally, adoptions peaked Friday with 71 pets finding families, followed by 58 on Saturday and 18 on Sunday.

The total set a new mark by surpassing last year’s record of 122 adoptions, with 70 in one day.

Big honors for big questions The Regeneron International Science and Engineering Fair is widely regarded as the world’s most prestigious pre-university scientific and engineering research competition.

Yatharth Kakkad, a sophomore at Pine View School, was among the students to take part, receiving a first grand award in the category of Biomedical and Health Sciences.

His research explores new mechanisms behind lung cancer that is resistant to treatment.

The competition featured more than 1,700 finalists from across the world.

Kakkad conducted part of his research under Professor Saulius Sumanas at the USF Health Morsani College of Medicine.

SPD arrests Miamiarea burglar Sarasota Police Department patrol officers, with the help of the RealTime Operations Center, have arrested a Miami man wanted in Brevard County in connection with multiple burglaries.

In addition to the burglaries, Hector Hernandez, 24, is facing a local felony charge of possession of burglary tools.

The ROC learned of a 2024 Mercedes-Benz linked to a suspect wanted by the Brevard County Sheriff’s Office. About 9:40 a.m.

Monday, June 22, officers spotted the vehicle, stopping it near Orange Avenue and Ringling Boulevard.

Before booking Hernandez at Sarasota County Jail, officers learned from the Brevard County Sheriff’s Office that the vehicle had been used in a burglary that same morning at 4 a.m. The suspect was captured on video wearing a black hoodie, black mask, black gloves, camouflage pants and dark sneakers with white soles. Officers found all of those items in the trunk and glove compartment of the vehicle.

In addition to the felony charge, Hernandez was also issued a citation for unknowingly driving with a suspended license.

Stephen Smagacz, supervisor of streetlights and signalization for Sarasota County, said the theft of copper wire along county roadways puts all drivers in greater jeopardy.

hieves cutting and digging up underground copper wiring along at least two county roadways are leaving a dangerous situation behind for those behind the wheel and on the sidewalk, according to Stephen Smagacz, supervisor of streetlights and signalization for Sarasota County.

Recently, more than 3 miles of wiring that energizes street lights have been cut and pulled from the ground, Smagacz said.

Sarasota County is not alone.

Similar thefts have taken place

around the country and, closer to home, in Manatee County, Fort Myers and others.

Smagacz said Sarasota County initially heard reports of lighting outages along 17th Street and Bahia Vista Street, then discovered 7,000 feet of wiring missing in one instance and 9,000 feet missing in another. The missing copper wiring is typically replaced with aluminum cables, which don’t hold as much resale value.

Repairs cost nearly $55,000, according to the county.

Smagacz said law enforcement agencies in the area have been briefed on the cases, and he emphasized such thefts put all motorists in greater jeopardy on the road than they’d be under normal nighttime circumstances.

The county urges residents who discover segments of lighting out to call police or the Sheriff’s Office on the nonemergency number. If they see suspicious activity, particularly at night, calling 911 is recommended.

I

t was 2022. While the world was emerging from pandemic lockdowns, Sarasota County, like much of Florida, was reaping the benefits from an early start of lifting restrictions and inviting all to come visit and, if you liked it here, put down roots.

The sudden and rapid in-migration that followed launched property values into dizzying heights, filling the coffers of local governments to the brim and then some. The population growth fueled a hiring blitz in the halls of government and revived capital projects that were delayed. You could almost hear the pre-Depression ditty “Happy Days are Here Again” ringing through the palms.

The good times, it seemed, were here to stay.

That was until post-COVID supply chain recovery enabled home construction to finally catch up with demand and a few nasty tropical weather systems took some of the shine off the idea of living on a 380-mile-long peninsula surrounded by ocean, leaving real estate — and accompanying tax values — relatively stagnant.

And who could have even conceived of a statewide referendum on property taxes that is now — amid the fiscal year 2027 budget season — forcing cities and counties across the state to consider how to address a significant percentage of ad valorem tax revenue vanishing from the balance sheet.

In anticipation of a worst-case scenario, at the behest of the Sarasota County Commission, some preemptive belt-tightening has already begun.

Sarasota County’s Office of Financial Management projects that, if the required 60% of Florida voters approve the property tax referendum in November, by fiscal year 2029 the county will lose some $87 million in property taxes. That’s 28.5% of the revenue the county projects to collect in fiscal year 2027, the last year before the reform measures would begin. That also represents 17% of the general fund of next year’s estimated $509.4 million.

On June 16 and 17, Sarasota County commissioners received and discussed County Administrator Jonathan Lewis’ preliminary budget for next fiscal year, which recommends no change in the county’s millage rate and a modest 1.3% increase in balanced revenue and spending. Earlier this year, commissioners instructed county administration to return with spending growth of no more than 1.6% and to find $5 million in cuts.

The budget also recommends no increase in the base millage rate.

To get there, they made the same request of the constitutional officers — whose budgets are approved by the state and applied to the counties’ tax bases — most of whom managed to comply.

CAPITAL DEBT AND OPERATIONS

Not only would the constitutional amendment reduce the available property tax revenue, it also comes with spending restrictions, some of which may require legal opinions.

may be spent on parks and park maintenance remains a question.

For certain, though, the county will be required to make its debt service payments or risk having its bond rating downgraded, which would be mean higher interest rates for borrowing and greater scrutiny by investors. Even if the county pays its debt service, county administration told commissioners Sarasota and every other county in the state face the prospects of a downgrade.

“Based on some extremes, our ratings could go down,” said Deputy County Administrator and Chief Financial Management Officer Steve Botelho. “We won’t be a AAA-rated entity. I would assume the board’s priority would be to make the bond payments and make good on that bond obligation, but the factors of how the rating agencies are going to look upon us as a county — and within the state all 67 counties — will probably be faced with an extra level of scrutiny from the rating agencies.”

Not all bond debt is paid from property tax proceeds. Revenues are derived from other sources, such as the tourist development tax, penny sales tax, impact fees and others.

“As long as we’re making the debt service payments but also keeping those required reserves for security on that debt where they’re supposed to be, for the short term it is probably good,” Lewis said. “I think the long term is anybody’s guess.”

Although many capital projects are funded by sources other than property tax revenues, ongoing operations costs are not. That puts in danger, for example, the Longboat Key library, which is nearing the end of design. The $11 million from library impact fees to build the library are in place, but the upwards of $1.5 million in annual operating costs are not.

Equally concerning is funding for parks operations, which some interpretations of the amendment suggest cannot be funded by property tax revenues.

“The question of amenities in the community has probably never been more pertinent than it is right now with discussions at the statewide level,” Lewis said.

Citing the commission’s focus on regional parks that began in 2016, many of those projects, such as the 17th Street Park adjacent to Bobby Jones Nature Park, are already under development.

A REPEAT REJECTION?

At $509.4 million, the preliminary general fund expenditure is $6.5 million higher than the current fiscal year. It’s also about one-fifth of the county’s entire budget of $2.53 billion, which includes non ad valorem-funded services such as fire and rescue, utilities, stormwater, solid waste and others.

Should the property tax referendum be approved, local governments will be left with few options to make ends meet — make deep cuts or increase the millage and/or impact fees, even the latter heavily regulated by the state.

Tallahassee made a similar attempt increase the homestead exemption in 2018 with Florida Amendment 1, which would have exempted up to

$125,000 of tax valuation from nonschool property taxes.

It fell short of the 60% required threshold for approval by only 2%.

Lewis said he is hopeful for a repeat verdict by the voters.

“I just don’t believe that when the voters know the impact to their libraries, their park system, the potential impact on law enforcement, all the people who are part of the Florida retirement system as retirees, all the (government) construction projects that the vendors need … they voted it down in 2018,” he said.

“We haven’t seen the actual language yet, but I wouldn’t be in this business if I didn’t think the services these people are providing weren’t what the public want.”

The next budget workshop is scheduled for Aug. 21, which could be canceled if there is no further business to discuss. Budget public hearings are scheduled for Sept. 9 and 23, the latter including final approval of the fiscal year 2027 budget.

arasota Memorial Health Care System has opened its $220 million facility that aims to elevate outpatient cancer treatment in the region. The Milman-Kover Cancer Pavilion is at 1941 Waldemere St., across the street from the hospital, and it offers everything from genetic testing to infusions.

Hospital officials joined hundreds of community members to cut the ribbon on the 200,000-square-foot pavilion June 12, following more than two years of construction. New York-based Turner Construction Co. partnered with Venice construction management firm J2 Solutions to build the facility. The project broke ground in late 2023, and it consists of the center and an attached garage with nearly 700 parking spaces.

A pedestrian bridge over Waldemere Street connects the Cancer Pavilion with the Sarasota Memorial Oncology Tower.

“Integration is essential in the cancer world,” Sarasota Memorial COO Jeff Limbocker said at the ribboncutting for the seven-story facility.

“A cancer diagnosis is life-changing, and our goal is to make every step of the journey — from screening, diagnosis, treatment, recovery and survivorship — as seamless and supportive as we can possibly make it. Together, these new centers of care have transformed our ability to deliver world-class oncology services right here at home in Sarasota.”

The goal behind the new cancer center is to offer a spectrum of outpatient oncology services, in one place, hospital officials say.

Approximately 200 oncology team members will staff the MilmanKover Cancer Pavilion, Savage says, of which 32 are new hires. In the past year, Savage notes, the healthcare system hired 30 additional oncology staff members for the Brian D. Jellison Cancer Institute.

Initially, the Brian D. Jellison Cancer Institute began to take shape in 2020 when Sarasota Memorial opened its first outpatient radiation center at its University Parkway campus. Its second facility came when SMH opened its inpatient and surgical Oncology Tower on the Sarasota campus in 2021.

Future outpatient expansion is planned but not yet budgeted for in South County.

Sarasota Memorial Health Care System had 2.03 million patient registrations across its network in 2025, which includes inpatient and outpatient services, as well as First Physician Group practices.

The MilmanKover Cancer Pavilion is designed to house outpatient services across a pedestrian bridge from the inpatient Oncology Tower at SMH.

Hyatt Centric plans take shape Construction set to begin this fall on the project to include 117 condos and the 174-room hotel.

ther than a remaining Florida Power & Light vault, the site that was the Hyatt Regency hotel and parking structure has been cleared, the building permit application has been submitted to the city and sales of the 117 condominiums have reached the 20% mark.

According to Kolter Group Senior Vice President Ed Jahn, everything is on schedule to begin foundation work on 1000 Boulevard of the Arts in the third quarter of 2026, with vertical construction beginning in the first half of 2027.

Quay will include a 174-room Hyatt Centric hotel integrated into the mixed-use development, an upgraded replacement of the 50-year-old former Hyatt Regency.

The developer recently released

new renderings to showcase some of the interior spaces within the hotel.

According to the Hyatt website, the company introduced the Hyatt Centric brand in 2015 to target “millennial-minded travelers placing guests directly in the heart of the action in prime destinations.”

When Kolter builds a hotel, Jahn said the company typically searches the market for the brand and manages the property through its hospitality division. In this case, though, a Hyatt-flagged hotel was a foregone conclusion.

“In this particular location, we owned the Hyatt that was on an adjacent parcel, and so we knew it was going to be a Hyatt brand hotel,” Jahn said. “We worked with Hyatt to select which brand within their portfolio and we felt was the best fit for Sarasota.”

Unlike the former Hyatt Regency, though, the hotel portion of the building will not face Boulevard of the Arts. That will be reserved for

residences providing forever unobstructed views overlooking The Bay park and Sarasota Bay. The hotel will run perpendicular to the condo location beneath six more floors of residences.

Elevators and lobbies for residents and hotel guests will be separate.

Similar blended-use developments are trending, but to date Kolter has been built them “sparingly,” according to Jahn.

“We’ve done it a few times in different communities,” he said. “The hotel ends up being an amenity to the condos in many ways, where if someone buys one of the smaller residences, but they have family or friends who are coming, they’re able to both be at the same location.”

The entry point for the residences at 1000 Boulevard of the Arts starts at $1.5 million for a 1,400-squarefoot unit. At the top of the price structure, and the top of the building, is a $4.6 million, 3,100-squarefoot penthouse.

“We tried with this Boulevard of the Arts project to fit the residences, both in size and price, into a niche within the market that we felt needed more, so we have a lot of residences that are around the $1.5 million to $2.5 million.” Jahn said. “In today’s market for a condo, that’s kind of the sweet spot for a lot of buyers.”

Should work proceed on schedule, Kolter expects occupation of 1000 Boulevard of the Arts in 2028.

The 1000 Boulevard of the Arts project won’t occupy the entire former Hyatt site. Kolter plans to build a second, unrelated condominium tower to the west of the project. No plans have been submitted yet.

Food on the fly With the new ‘First Class Flavors’ in place, SRQ turns attention to enhancing the travel experience with art and music.

eing a destination airport, Sarasota-Bradenton International Airport has something of a captive audience once inside the security checkpoints.

Whatever the dining and drinking options, then, hungry and thirsty passengers waiting to board their flights will consume on the fly whatever is available to them. And it doesn’t necessarily have to be really good, right?

Wrong, said SRQ President and CEO Paul Hoback, whose team coordinated with its two new master concessionaires — SSP America and Paradies Lagardére — on June 16 to showcase the new restaurant and bar offerings at both Concourses A and B to a gathering of invited Sarasota and Manatee county stakeholders.

vacation should start when disembarking the plane, and it shouldn’t end immediately after walking through the TSA metal detectors.

“I think it’s so important for us to offer that sense of place, that sense of community so that your vacation begins as soon as you walk off that airplane and you get to enjoy the sights and the sounds of the Sarasota-Bradenton region right here at the airport,” Hoback said.

“That’s whether it’s retail, whether it’s food and beverage, whether it’s our waterfall, the manatee, the Mote Aquarium, even a steel drum band.”

To the latter, a steel drum musician backed by pre-recorded tracks supplied the holiday vibe from a corner of the entry lobby of the new Concourse A where the new vendors — joined by the venerable holdover Jimmy John’s — lined the walls with samples of some of their signature fare.

Among them was local favorite Mattison’s, with chef and owner Paul Mattison himself present. As per the standard business model, he doesn’t own the airport location.

Instead the concessionaire operates the restaurant and bar under a licensing agreement.

“It’s been a great partnership,” Mattison said. “It’s my brand, it’s my recipes, but it’s their execution.

It’s their company that’s running the operation, and I will say they run the operation as well or better than I do.”

Mattison’s is joined in the concourses by other local brands Anna Maria Oyster Bar and Patricks in Concourse A, and Motorworks Brewing in Concourse B. New national brands added to Concourse B are Wahlburgers and chicken tender purveyor Huey Magoo’s, joining holdovers Jimmy John’s and Starbucks.

Also in Concourse B are The Salty Key Bar and The Shoppes at Siesta Key, the latter featuring packaged items from Morton’s Gourmet Market of Sarasota.

recalls the previous offerings under former concessionaire Host Marriott as mundane, which left him skeptical when he was first approached by Paradies Lagardére.

“I couldn’t imagine coming into any airport, let alone that airport,” Mattison said. “There was that one restaurant at the top of the escalator. It’s never been very good, and nobody ever eats there. There’s no way that’s going to be profitable. But when I was approached by a concessionaire that does airports all over the world, and they invited me to partner with them, it was really an honor.

“They could have picked anyone in the community.”

Each contract with the two new concessionaires runs for 12 years.

Airport officials had recognized the need to upgrade its offerings to match the rapid growth in passenger traffic since 2019 — it surpassed 4.5 million passengers in 2025 — before the new contracts were put out to bid.

The Host Marriott contract expiration coincided with the timing of opening Concourse A in January 2025, providing the opportunity to bring aboard two of the largest such operators in the world.

“The reason we go to master con-

cessionaires is then we have one entity to deal with, and in this case, we have two,” Piccolo previously told the Observer. “If there’s an issue, we only deal with the master concessionaire, not with every little entity, so it’s much more efficient for us from that standpoint.”

Total investment in Concourse B and in the pre-security checkpoint on the second level, which features Suncoast Trading and Bar, was upwards of $16 million — all covered by the concessionaires.

Hoback said his team is now turning their attention toward enhancing the ambience of the airport with an emphasis on art and live entertainment.

A fan of steel drum music, passengers may hear more of the genre in various locations of the terminal.

“We need more of that personality coming to life and bringing our terminal to life so that this is not just a point along someone’s travel destination, but is a destination in and of itself,” Hoback said.

“If you wait 10 or 15 minutes at baggage clam or at the security checkpoint, to be able to enjoy that this type of music can be a game changer for somebody.”

ov. Ron DeSantis has spent years making affordability a central part of his agenda. He pushed insurance reforms, championed housing reforms, signed the Live Local Act and repeatedly argued that Florida’s rising cost of living is one of the biggest challenges facing working families.

That is what makes Florida’s proposed property tax amendment so fascinating.

This debate is no longer simply about taxes. It is about housing.

More specifically, it is about whether Florida is creating incentives to build the starter homes it desperately needs or creating incentives to avoid them.

Most of the debate has focused on the immediate effects of the amendment: how much homeowners save; how much local governments lose; and whether Tallahassee eventually backfills local budgets. Those are important questions. They are first-order questions.

The more important question is what happens next.

Taxes are the first-order effect.

Housing is the second-order effect.

And second-order effects are usually where public policy succeeds or fails.

Florida does not have a luxury housing shortage. It has a starterhome shortage. Teachers, nurses, firefighters and young families are struggling to buy their first homes.

The median price of a new singlefamily home in Florida now exceeds $400,000. The entry point to homeownership continues moving further out of reach.

That reality was one of the driving forces behind the Live Local Act. The goal was straightforward: Increase housing supply and improve affordability. But what if another state policy is pushing in the opposite direction?

GROWTH = REVENUE + COST

For decades, local governments operated under a simple formula: Growth = Revenue + Cost New homes created new revenue and new expenses. Roads had to be expanded. Fire stations had to be staffed. Parks had to be maintained.

But growth also expanded the tax base that helped pay for those services.

The proposed amendment changes that equation: Growth = Cost. The services remain. The residents remain. The infrastructure demands remain. But a growing share of the tax base disappears.

When local governments begin viewing growth primarily as a cost rather than an opportunity, incentives change. And when incentives change, behavior follows. That is not ideology. It is economics.

Imagine you are a county commissioner facing budget pressure.

A developer presents two projects: 200 starter homes or an apartment generating substantially more taxable value per acre.

Which one becomes easier to approve?

The answer matters because incentives matter.

The danger is not that local governments suddenly oppose affordable housing. The danger is that they conclude they cannot afford it.

That may sound theoretical, but we have already seen local governments slow or limit residential growth when they conclude the costs outweigh the benefits. The projects themselves are not necessarily the problem.

The math is.

STRUCTURAL ECONOMIC CHANGE

Supporters of the amendment will correctly point out that homeowners who pay less in property taxes have more money to spend elsewhere. That may be true. But local governments do not fund roads, deputies, fire protection and stormwater systems with good intentions.

They fund them with revenue.

The services new residents depend upon are local. The costs are local. And increasingly, the fiscal benefits of starter-home growth may not be.

The challenge becomes even greater because the homestead exemption does not remain fixed. It grows with inflation. At first glance, that sounds reasonable. But it creates a powerful long-term effect.

A starter home does not simply receive a one-time tax benefit. As values rise, the exemption rises too.

Consider a home with a taxable value of $250,000 today. If both home values and the exemption rise with inflation, much of that home’s value remains shielded from taxation for years to come.

Higher-value homes do not face the same dynamic. They continue generating substantially more taxable value.

Over time, the math increasingly favors expensive housing over starter housing. Expensive homes generate tax revenue; starter homes generate virtually nothing.

That is not a temporary fiscal adjustment. It is a structural change in the economics of housing development.

AFFORDABLE HOUSING: LIABILITY?

Fast forward 10 years. You are still that county commissioner. Service costs have increased. Infrastructure demands have increased. Population has increased.

But many of the starter homes built during the previous decade continue generating relatively little

revenue compared to the services they require.

What conclusion do you reach?

At some point, affordable housing stops being viewed as an opportunity and starts being viewed as a liability.

That should concern everyone.

Florida’s housing challenge is not simply that homes cost too much. It is that the housing ladder is already missing its bottom rung. Starter homes are where renters become owners. They are where families build equity. They are where wealth creation begins.

When enough starter homes are built, families move up through the housing market over time, creating opportunities for the next generation of buyers.

When the bottom rung disappears, the entire ladder seizes up.

Renters stay renters. Starter-home demand outstrips supply. Firsttime buyers keep bidding against one another. Existing homeowners stay put longer. Prices rise throughout the market.

The consequences extend beyond housing. Employers need workers, and workers need places to live.

Every starter home that does not get built makes Florida’s workforce harder and more expensive to attract.

Which brings us back to our title: This is not DeSantis vs. his critics.

It is DeSantis vs. DeSantis.

AFFORDABILITY JUST DISAPPEARS

One DeSantis signed the Live Local Act because Florida needed more housing supply. The other is asking voters to approve a constitutional amendment that will change the incentives surrounding starter-home development.

One policy encourages the first rung of the housing ladder. The other may make that rung fiscally impossible to approve. One presses the accelerator. The other may be slamming on the brakes.

Maybe the governor’s office has modeling showing none of this occurs. If so, Floridians should see it. Because good public policy is not measured by intentions. It is measured by incentives.

Local governments will respond to those incentives. Builders will respond to those incentives. Markets will respond to those incentives. They always do.

Gov. DeSantis wants Florida to be more affordable. I do not doubt that for a second. But wanting more affordable housing and creating the conditions for more affordable housing are not always the same thing.

The question voters should ask is simple: Does this amendment help rebuild the first rung of Florida’s housing ladder? Or does it make local governments less likely to approve it?

Because if Florida stops building starter homes, affordability doesn’t improve.

It just disappea ...

EARLY MORNING DOUGHNUTS 3:06 a.m., West Cornelius Circle Criminal mischief: An officer was contacted by the police chief requesting assistance in identifying a suspect vehicle that caused several thousand dollars’ worth of damage to Eastwood Park. A video obtained from a nearby residence showed a pickup entering the park area around 3 a.m. and spinning “doughnuts” and damaging the grass.

Additional footage was obtained from the surrounding area and along possible travel routes from Eastwood Park. Cameras along Fruitville Road were examined, and a truck resembling the one in the park was spotted.

A registration inquiry revealed the vehicle was registered to an address in Zolfo Springs. Contacted by phone, the owner was cooperative and advised his 18-year-old son was operating the vehicle at the time and that he had just been arrested on unrelated charges and was incarcerated in Hardy County Jail.

He accepted responsibility for the damages caused by his son’s actions and stated he would cooperate with the city regarding restitution.

An officer advised the man his son could face charges for criminal mischief if a satisfactory agreement on restitution was not reached.

KEY CHALLENGE 11:06 p.m., 200 block of Benjamin Franklin Drive Disturbance: A woman was embroiled in an argument with hotel staff, which began when a security officer approached her in the parking lot and asked if she needed assistance because she appeared to be looking for something.

The security guard said the woman immediately became aggressive and was yelling at him, noting for effect she “pays $300 a night to stay here,” according to the incident report. Management elected to contact law enforcement because she was not calming down.

The woman told an officer she was at the beach with another woman and they had lost the key to the car they drove there, which is what she was looking for in the parking lot, and that she became frightened when the guard approached her because he was not in uniform. Naturally, this turn of events prompted her to call the man a “cracker.”

As it turned out, she wasn’t paying $300 per night to stay at the hotel because they were not registered guests and were parked there illegally.

She was advised by the night manager via the officer that the day shift manager would likely give the two women 24 hours to move the vehicle or it will be towed, and they wanted the woman trespassed from the location.

Not able to locate the missing key, they arranged for a ride to pick them up. How she might retrieve the vehicle should she find the key while being trespassed is another problem for another day.

TOO DRUNK TO STAND UP 9:58 p.m., 100 block of Central Avenue Disturbance: When an officer arrived at a dispute call, he found a woman sitting on the floor of her home unable to stand up. The woman’s husband told an officer she had been drinking, fell and bumped her head. He said she arrived home intoxicated and when she went into the bathroom, he believed she fell in there, as well.

Further, he told officers after she came out of the bathroom, she tried to sit in a recliner, missed the chair and fell to the floor, which is when he called 911. An officer observed the woman try to stand up twice, both times unsuccessfully. She also repeated nonrelevant phrases and evaded questions she was asked by an officer. Once paramedics arrived, officers left the situation to them.

s F. Scott Fitzgerald so astutely observed, the very rich “are different from you and me.”

To begin with, they like to live in very big houses and often have several of them. To fill up these spaces, they tend to accumulate stuff — fancy cars, fine wines, custom-made furniture, antiques and valuable art.

Unless you have very rich friends, you might not see these treasures until they end up in a museum or up for auction at Sotheby’s or Christie’s, which publicly display pieces before they go under the gavel.

Until now.

Unless you’re the kind of person who reads Artforum magazine, you may not be aware that a major exhibition of contemporary art loaned by collectors from Southwest Florida is happening in your own backyard. If you’re familiar with 21st-century culture, you’ve heard names like Louise Bourgeois, Chuck Close, David Hockney, Yoko Ono, Kara Walker and Ai Weiwei before.

But did you know some of their artwork is currently on display in the old Sarasota High School? Located at 1001 S. Tamiami Trail, the red brick building houses the Sarasota Art Museum.

Run by Ringling College of Art and Design, SAM also hosts the local outpost of the Osher Lifelong Learning Institute. The lifelong learners have no doubt heard about the breathtaking exhibition “Something Borrowed, Something New.” But it was easy to miss its April 27 opening at the end of a busy Sarasota social season marked by some centennial celebrations.

You don’t have to be an art connoisseur to see that the exhibition of 85 pieces loaned by 10 collectors from Tampa, St. Petersburg and Sarasota is nothing short of a cultural coup. It’s also testament to the much-vaunted generosity of the region.

“Something Borrowed, Something New” marks the capstone of Rangsook Yoon’s tenure as senior curator at SAM. Yoon left in May to join the Frye Art Museum in Seattle.

“Something Borrowed” is evidence of Yoon’s ability to identify rising stars in the contemporary art scene.

In addition to the boldface names already mentioned, the exhibition includes such cutting-edge artists as Derrick Adams, KAWS, Cara Romero, Hank Willis Thomas, Wil-

To be sure, these artists represent eyes and hands that have been long ignored in the art world. But no one should dismiss “Something Borrowed” as a survey of “woke” art or an overdue nod to representation.

This is a stunning assemblage of what the very rich among us consider worth collecting.

The diplomacy and negotiating skills that Yoon and others at SAM must have employed to bring the paintings, photographs, sculpture and multimedia works to SAM’s galleries can only be imagined.

We’re talking about hours, if not weeks and months, of courting and cajoling. And there are strings attached. Certain twin images like Hank Willis Thomas’ “Silver Lining A (No Flash)” and “Silver Lining A (With Flash)” from the collection of Stanton Storer must always be reproduced together. A minor detail to be sure, but one that demonstrates how the owners of artwork still want control over their acquisitions.

But even if the very rich are different from you and me, they are not, like Chekhov’s proverbial happy families, all alike. Some flaunt their wealth, while others keep a low profile.

by Yoon on April 18 that brought together Storer and Mark Salzberg, both major lenders to “Something Borrowed, Something New.” Salzberg’s wife, Donna, was in the front row, lending support to her husband.

When you enter the “Something Borrowed, Something New” exhibition, you are greeted by three Mickey Mouse-like sculptures by the artist KAWS on loan from the Salzberg Collection. Titled “4 Ft Companion (Gray), (Brown) and (Black),” the painted vinyl figures have Mickey’s shoes and gloves, but not his ears. Where an eye would normally be found, there is the letter X. “What does it mean?” pondered a group of SAM visitors on a recent tour led by docent Diane Farber. Like all the docents wearing signature pink aprons and nametags at SAM, Farber is quite knowledgeable about her subject. She confirmed someone’s suspicion that “X’s instead of eyes means erasure or invisibility.”

Erasure is a thread that runs through “Something Borrowed.” In Kara Walker’s “Lost Mountain at Sunrise,” on loan from the collection of Keith Monda and Venorica Brady, the artist has embellished a picture from “Harper’s Pictorial History of the Civil War” by adding Black characters.

Some of the artwork on display in “Something Borrowed” take images that have been appropriated and reclaims them. Foremost among this genre is the huge sepia-toned print

by Cara Romero called “TV Indians,” on loan from the Richard and Ellen Sandor Family Collection.

A registered member of the Chemehuevi Indian Tribe, Romero photographed family members outdoors under a majestic sky. Dressed in traditional Native costumes, they are flanked by vintage TVs and computer screens with such familiar characters as “Tonto and the Lone Ranger.”

Ai Weiwei’s “Coca Cola Vase” from the Salzberg Collection and the bright red “The Papercut Portfolio (Cats and Dogs; Citizen’s Investigation; New York; Furniture; Haircut; Map of China; River Crabs; Zodiac)” on loan from Storer depict an ancient culture being enlivened but also corrupted by American-style capitalism. Follow the progression of papercuts and you’ll discover the Chinese artist’s disillusionment with life in New York City.

Hard as it may be to believe, the vase with the familiar soda logo is at least 2,000 years old and dates to China’s Han dynasty. Incredible!

To describe “Something Borrowed, Something New” as awe-inspiring is an understatement at best. It’s worth seeing several times.

Before you go, spend a few minutes in front of David Hockney’s “Inside It Opens Up As Well,” which contains many artworks within a piece that is 90 inches wide and 33 inches high.

Hockney, an unapologetically gay Yorkshireman who fell in love with California, died at age 88 on June 11.

Try to spend 10 minutes looking at “Inside It Opens Up As Well.” The artwork-gazing challenge is a TikTok staple and was recently embraced by The New York Times.

As you lose yourself in one of the stupendous pieces at SAM, you’re likely to overhear comments such as, “Do people really keep these pieces in their living room?” Yes, they do.

During the opening day panel discussion, Storer and Salzberg showed photographs of art in their homes.

Lest there was any doubt, the photos confirm that the very rich are different from you and me.

e’ve all heard variations on “the couple that (fill in the blank) together, stays together.” For some, it’s “the couple that plays together.” The more devout might favor “the couple that prays together.”

We’re not going to get a rhyme, but for Sarasota snowbirds Kathryn and Jerome Chesley, who’ve been together for more than 50 years, the expression would be: “The couple that enjoys the arts together, stays together.”

If you’ve spent any time at Sarasota’s cultural attractions, you’ve probably seen Kathryn and Jerome in action, both separately and together. Both retired schoolteachers from Buffalo, New York, the Chesleys can be found leading trolley excursions at Discover Sarasota Tours, ushering at Asolo Repertory Theatre performances and making the most of Sarasota’s arts scene.

A former drama teacher, Kathryn portrays local historical figures, including Bertha Palmer, Marie Selby and Mable Ringling, on trolley tours and at library, club and historical society events.

In addition to elaborate period costumes, Kathryn’s life as a “reenactor” involves a stunning collection of hats with lots of feathers. Some mirror the millinery of the 20thcentury aughts, the heyday of the Gibson Girl, while others are straight out of the Jazz Age. When Tammy Hauser founded her trolley tour company in 2018, she asked Van Wezel Performing Arts Hall General Manager Kyle Turoff to spread the word “through her Big Apple network,” Hauser says.

Turoff’s parents, Bob and Roberta Turoff, ran the Golden Apple Dinner Theatre in downtown Sarasota for more than 40 years.

Chesley showed up not long after the casting call went out. She was a perfect fit. “As a historic character performer, she has so much knowledge about the history of Sarasota.

She can talk about any aspect, anybody, any street, any place. She’s wonderful, a real gem,” Hauser says.

Chesley was Discover Sarasota Tours’ fifth employee. Today, it has 23 full- and part-time employees, from the actors who perform on themed tours like “Who Killed the Circus Queen?” to the people who run the gift shop.

Hauser hired Jerome when Discover Sarasota Tours expanded from three tours to nine in 2019. “When I heard from Kathryn that Jerome was an artist, I decided he would be perfect to lead a tour of all the public art on display in Sarasota,” Hauser says.

A retired high school art teacher, Jerome is an accomplished watercolorist who is a signature member of the Florida Watercolor Society, where he served as president in 2018. He is also a past president of the Florida Suncoast Watercolor Society.

1874 by a Methodist minister and an inventor, the adult summer camp is dedicated to lifelong learning.

For Jerome and Kathryn, Chautauqua is their summer retreat after a busy season in Sarasota, where Jerome teaches watercolor classes locally and gives workshops throughout the state besides leading excursions with Discover Sarasota Tours.

Asked the secret to their marital longevity, Kathryn says communication is key. Each morning over breakfast they review the day’s schedule to “stay on the same page,” she says.

It’s a tradition that dates back to the beginning of their relationship.

The couple first met in 1972 at a community theater in Cheektowaga, New York, called The Apple Town Players.

The newfound little theater took its name from the Indian meaning of Cheektowaga, “Land of the Crab Apples,” but left the “crab” out because it “sounded better,” Jerome says.

He ended up at the troupe because a friend told him they needed someone who could paint sets.

“The theater was just starting,” recalls Kathryn. “Our first show was ‘The Mikado.’” At the cast party, Kathryn was swept off her feet by Jerome’s jitterbug moves. This led them to team up on the competitive dance circuit and ultimately marry.

Perhaps because they spent their careers teaching, both Chesleys are still constantly learning, whether to prepare a new script for a tour, create a class outline (Jerome) or research a historical figure (Kathryn).

Though not identical to Chautauqua, the idea of a community where residents are devoted to art and education is also part of Sarasota’s history.

Unlike Chautauqua, the Sarasota Art Colony wasn’t a formal institution. But its members revitalized an association that today is known as Art Center Sarasota. This year, Art Center Sarasota celebrated its centennial by reviving its famed Beaux Arts Ball.

Unfortunately, the Chesleys weren’t able to attend because they were in New York City for the Broadway debuts of two of Kathryn’s stuents. Had they gone, they would have fit right in. But their dance of choice would have been out of sync. Even after all these years, they still prefer the jitterbug to the Charleston.

arasota resident Michael Moss has been a racer since he

was young.

At age 13, he started saving to buy a Chevy, in anticipation of having a driver’s license. Later, he began building Chevy engines, many of them with Duntov cams — the famous high-performance camshafts designed by his hero, Zora Arkus-Duntov — in his family garage and speed shop. While attending college, he drag raced his Chevrolet Camaro.

But Moss had never had an experience like the 1000 Miglia rally. He calls the rally in Italy reenacting the legendary endurance race held from 1927 to 1957 “just the craziest motorsports thing I’ve ever done.”

In a figure-eight form from Brescia to Rome and back, the course covered 1,250 miles from June 9 to June 13. For Moss, it was also an experience that involved some unexpected moments of danger, as well as a lastminute replacement navigator in his friend, John Cutrone.

The duo drove the Spirit of Zora, a 1957 fuel-injected Corvette. Being among the later vehicles to depart according to the event format, they finished in 371st place out of 436 cars entered, 50 of which did not start or did not finish.

Moss says just finishing the race, which took place in the grueling heat, while operating on three hours of sleep per night and 15 hours of driving per day, was an accomplishment.

THE RALLY RETURNS

The original race, the Mille Miglia, which racing driver and entrepreneur Enzo Ferrari called the “world’s

most beautiful road race” and the “world’s unique traveling museum,” ultimately came to a tragic ending.

In 1957, it was shut down after a crash that killed Scuderia Ferrari driver Alfonso de Portago, his co-driver Edmund Nelson and nine spectators resulted in public outrage.

The event was resurrected in 1977 as a rally, which takes place on public roads alongside regular traffic, using prescribed average speeds to determine place and assessing penalties for breaking traffic laws.

The event is intended for cars built before Dec. 31, 1957, that belong to a car model that took part in at least one edition of the Mille Miglia.

Although that didn’t apply to Moss’s Corvette, he was able to enter due to the guest list, which included the vehicle because of its character and historical significance.

Along with Martyn Schorr, a fellow member of Sarasota Café Racers who is the founding editor of Vette Magazine, Moss co-founded Team Zora, an initiative whose goal is to honor the legacy of Zora Arkus-Duntov by competing in 1000 Miglia events.

Arkus-Duntov is remembered for his performance engineering and racing achievements at Chevrolet and with the Corvette.

Moss’s car was one of 35 representing the country at this year’s event and was the first to ever represent Sarasota outside of 2014, when Brian Johnson of rock band AC/DC served as a celebrity driver for Jaguar. The vehicle, painted Venetian Red, is powered by what Schorr says is the highest performance engine available in 1957.

Schorr says the outfitting of the car made finding parts more difficult and expensive. Fortunately, a network of car enthusiasts from Sarasota stepped up.

“The best village on the planet are the car guys in Sarasota … ” Moss said. “It was really terrific having all these friends who considered it their venture, their team to go and help do things. Unbelievable. Absolutely

great. This great team of friends — it wouldn’t happen without everybody.”

FROM SARASOTA TO ITALY

The first big incident happened as the rally began, when the original navigator got sick.

“You’ve got to jump in, buddy,” Moss recalled telling Cutrone, a fellow member of Sarasota Café Racers, a group for which Schorr is a founding member. Cutrone was initially hesitant due to his lack of experience.

Moss says he handed Cutrone a series of books while complimenting his intelligence, books he would spend the next days buried in.

As they traveled through Italy, Moss says he was struck by how well-loved American cars were.

“Unless you’re doing it, it’s nothing like you can understand, and also the fanatical interest by the Italian people,” he said of the event overall. “I mean, you’d have little old ladies out there jumping up and down, screaming, waving the flags.

Wouldn’t happen in Sarasota.”

Navigation was a learning curve for Cutrone. GPS isn’t allowed, and participants have to track their route using the book and a device that measures kilometers.

If drivers become lost, the 15-anda-half hour days could easily turn into 16- or 17-hour days, he said.

Cutrone says he enjoyed the sightseeing. Although he’d visited the country before, he had the chance to see new locations, one highlight for him being the Basilica of St. Francis of Assisi in the town of Assisi.

“Driving through towns like Vicenza and Lucca and places like that were great, and what was good for me is I had been to some of these places before, and then driving through, I kind of knew where I was going,” he said.

Although they got lost in Rome for three hours, Moss says that by the fifth day, they were working as a team.

“I was driving well, and he was navigating fabulously,” he said.

But driving and navigational skills could not prevent some of the mechanical breakdowns to which classic cars are prone. One of the most notable incidents happened in Riminy, on what Moss describes as a road of six to eight lanes, when the entire steering wheel came off.

But the scariest part of the trip, say Moss and Cutrone, was winding down from the Alps, when the car’s headlights became severely damaged, as well as the brakes. As they wound around mountain roads and alongside cliffs, Moss mainly braked using the engine, taking each movement slowly and inching downward at 8km an hour.

“I have to tell you that when we finished with that, we thought about packing, said we can’t do this again,” Moss said. “But you know what? We were out the next morning and we were determined to finish. You can’t go to Italy and put on a performance of getting off the mountain, and then not the next morning. The brakes are cool, they’re working ... Let’s go out and do it again.”

When they reached the end of the course, Moss says any sense of weariness lifted. They were greeted by friends and thousands of people, laughing and hugging as well as beer, champagne and wine.

“I would tell you that my experience is exciting, exciting, exhilarating, a little bit dangerous, exhausting at the end,” Cutrone said. “At the very end of the race, I didn’t expect this feeling of being completely overwhelmed. Then we finished, we finished safely, we didn’t damage the car, we got a good time. It was great.”

Moss says that in the end, it didn’t come down to just their journey, but also the experience of their friends in the car community in Sarasota.

“It takes a village, like all these guys, plus many, many more,” Moss said. “The whole group got together, and some of the guys who don’t know anything just came along for physical support and laughs ... I think it really brought a whole group of older guys together to have fun and enjoy it, and they all live vicariously through what John and I do.”

Newtown celebrates Juneteenth

he Juneteenth celebration is held annually in Newtown, bringing together businesses and residents.

However, Natasha Clemons, a participant in the event, said she wishes something like it could happen every month.

“This community has lots of money, but when it comes to Juneteenth, we really come together, and it’s really, really special,” she said.

Clemons was present on behalf of her son, Rodney Mitchell, who was killed in 2012 during an altercation with police. She said the community has been through a lot, and she was glad to see members support one another.

The festival, held in honor of the holiday on June 19 commemorating the end of slavery in the United States, featured businesses offering cuisine and treats to help people cool off from the heat, drawing participants from Newtown and beyond.

“I love it, and it doesn’t matter what race, creed or color it is,” Clemons said. “We all support each other, and that’s what I love about it. I like it when other races come into our community and see that it’s nothing negative about it, that it’s all love, so that’s what really excites me.”

Kramer says his salon is unique in welcoming people from all walks of life. People can attend with an RSVP and a required donation.

As guests arrive, they bring along food to enjoy, and bottles of wine are poured, while Kramer speaks conversationally to the attendees, sprinkling in doses of humor as he leads them into the performances.

“One of the things is that it’s this intimate, quiet room where people are really listening,” Arencibia said.

“So really, music takes a center stage, in opposition to other places where there are always distractions and things like that, and it being so small, you really feel the energy of the people really close to you, so you can almost feel how they breathe and the feedback that you get from the people. And, of course, it’s a beautiful venue, and it’s a nice piano.”

Music was performed for generations in his family of Eastern European Jews, who fled the Soviet Union during the tenure of leader Leonid Ilyich Brezhnev in the 1970s.

Growing up in Copenhagen, he was exposed to American-educated musicians as well as recordings of American music.

“If you think about a musician in Soviet times, to listen to Americanmade music, it was dangerous,” he said. “You could be imprisoned, executed. Everything that was American was illegal.”

Music was integral to his life from an early age, and he studied with his grandfather Vladimir Issaivich Novak, a former violinist in the Kiev Philharmonic, beginning at age 3.

Kramer came to America in 2010, and says that by traveling extensively across the country, he learned repeatedly that music is being taken off its streets.

“There are so many rules and regulations for actually picking up an instrument ... ” he said. “Unless you buy a group ticket, an individual

ticket to an orchestra, institutionalized cultural events, it’s actually hard to just to go out and be spontaneous.”

Yet he says sharing music is also more important than ever.

Looking back at the lives of his ancestors in Eastern Europe, he sees that they came together amid the tyranny they endured under the ideologies of fascism, Nazism and communism.

“Very often, what happened was the culture actually brought people together in the most desperate of times, and seeing all the privileges we have in America, it’s a good time to maybe reflect upon being more together than divided,” he said.

In addition to his grandfather, Kramer studied under Scandinavian cellist Erling Bløndal Bengtsson, and studied chamber music with Yehudi Menuhin and Peter Norris at the Yehudi Menuhin School in England.

Some of his work includes making recordings of Bach’s Unaccompanied Suites, as well as of contemporary styles in jazz with the Philadelphiabased Wizard of Jazz and pianist Tom Lawton.

all time is the contemporary styles of 1920s to 1950s America, what he calls the “golden period of melodies,” but above all, he loves classical music, saying it’s important to educate others in the genre.

The salons have no set agenda, but he says it’s healthy to begin with classical music. Those selections are usually followed by jazz. There can also be poetry, or artists, painters and sculptors bringing mobile exhibitions.

Kramer said classically trained musicians are increasingly less common, but a goal of Music Salon is to host many classical and jazz musicians.

He notes its calendar is currently booked through 2027.

As Arencibia and West prepared to perform that day, they were set to honor the 99th birthday of jazz pianist Dick Hyman, although Hyman was ultimately not able to attend.

However, they still expressed excitement for the opportunity to perform together in the venue.

Arencibia said he admired West’s musicianship, but also how he deals with different situations in terms of instrumentation, which he said allowed lots of opportunities for improvisation.

“To praise Pablo’s playing, he’s a very communicative musician, which I very much appreciate, both as an individual, but as a greater jazz musician,” West said.

“We’re really looking forward to seeing how this feels,” Arencibia said.

ablo Arencibia and Aaron West have long performed together.

They teach piano and saxophone, respectively, at University of South Florida in Tampa.

However, May 3 was their first time playing as a duo, although it was the third time Arencibia had stepped into the South Sarasota home of cellist Steve Kramer.

Although there was an audience in the living area, it wasn’t a concert, nor was it a recital, Kramer said.

“I want to stay on my two feet to call it a music salon, because really, it’s almost like an improvisatory situation,” he said. “I call musicians only because they love music.”

Kramer launched Music Salon of Sarasota in 2024, with two of his children, and since then, his son, Victor Kramer, and his daughter, Emilia Gazman, have played a large role in the performances.

he Sarasota Shark Open was held from June 11-14 at Selby Aquatic Center, bringing together male and female club swimmers of all ages in the area. The Tampa Bay Aquatic Club, Tampa YMCA Stingrays, Torpedo Swim School, Lakewood Ranch Swim Association Lightning and Hydro Swim Club participated, as well as host Sarasota Sharks. On the boys’ side, Ari Thorne secured the most first-place finishes with his performance in the age 10 and under division. He won the 100-yard freestyle (1:13.64), 200-yard freestyle (2:42.10), 50-yard backstroke (41.11), 50-yard breaststroke (45.31), 100-yard breaststroke (1:37.03) and 50-yard butterfly (38.92). ... Also at that meet, Sydney Hardy — rising sophomore at Riverview High — collected a club-high seven golds on the girls’ side while competing in the age 15 and over division.

Her wins were in the 100-yard freestyle (56.66), 200-yard freestyle (2:00.74), 800-yard freestyle (8:50.01), 100-yard breaststroke (1:12.46), 200yard butterfly (2:13.79), 200yard individual medley (2:14.65) and 400-yard individual medley (4:46.34). Hardy is the reigning FHSAA Class 4A state champion in the 100-yard breaststroke, and was also crowned as part of the Rams’ 200-yard freestyle relay team. That team featured then-freshman Allie Pearson, then-senior Taylor Schwenk and then-junior Angelina Lista. ... Offers just keep on coming for Sarasota High rising junior Hudson West. The 6-foot5, 190-pound quarterback received an offer from Florida on June 20 after showing out at the program’s camp and sevenon-seven tournament. West was also offered by Louisville on June 3 and is now up to 22 offers — as of June 21 — from NCAA Division I programs. In 2025, he led the Sailors to a 4-7 finish with 2,836 yards and 26 touchdowns on a 55.1% completion rate. ... Jordan Booker, a rising senior defensive back for Booker High, committed to Georgia State on June 19. He held 12 offers from NCAA Division I programs including Wake Forest, FIU and Appalachian State. Booker tallied a teamhigh five interceptions for the Tornadoes in 2025, en route to the FHSAA 3A state semifinals, and also registered 34 solo tackles, which were fifth most on the team.

Priding himself on being a student of the game, Dan Konczak is entirely self-taught in volleyball. He never played the sport while growing up in Minnesota and instead focused on football and basketball.

A HOUSE DIVIDED Dan Konczak, the new Cardinal Mooney girls volleyball coach, had tough family considerations to weigh before taking the job.

he evening of Aug. 18 will be no ordinary evening

for Dan Konczak. He’ll feel conflicted, and maybe a bit unsettled by the occasion.

His own daughter, Sydney Konczak, will be on the opposite side of the net from his team when Bradenton Christian plays Cardinal Mooney that night in the latter’s home opener.

During his years in volleyball, he’s never had an opponent quite like this. It’ll be a family affair — a house divided — when he makes his debut with the Cougars.

The scheduling quirk isn’t lost on Dan Konczak, who’s now two weeks into his new gig as the Cardinal Mooney girls volleyball coach. He was hired June 12 to lead the program following Allan Knight’s resignation in September 2025 and Leah Mihm’s tenure as interim.

“God has a funny sense of humor with some of that,” Konczak said. “(Panthers) coach (Zach) VanDuinen and I are great friends. To leave BCS and to leave him and all these girls

that I’ve helped bring up through the program, including my own daughter, was a horribly hard decision.”

Last season ended with a 15-11 record in the FHSAA Class 3A-Region 3 quarterfinals for the Cougars, who won the 3A-11 district championship. They were even better in Knight’s first year at 22-5 en route to the 3A-3 regional final.

Stability, though, has been in short supply for the program this decade.

Chad Sutton oversaw back-to-back state title match appearances from 2018-19 and the program’s first championship in 2019, but Cardinal Mooney has gone through multiple coaches since his 2020 departure.

Konczak is fourth on that list. And it’s his first appointment as coach of a varsity program following eight years of working his way up at Bradenton Christian.

“This is not a rebuild. (Athletics Director Rafael) Fernandez made it very clear,” Konczak said. “He’s handing me the keys to a Lamborghini.”

His daughters, Nariah and Sydney Konczak, are the reason he first picked up a clipboard and took up coaching in the gym.

Volleyball was not a sport he grew up around or knew anything about before them. He played basketball and football at Esko High School in Minnesota, but after the Konczak family moved to Bradenton in March 2017, his daughters soon dove into the science of digs, sets and hits.

He hung around their coaches as much as he could and stayed curious.

Initially, it was just to understand the fundamentals of the game — to facilitate his daughters’ learning.

Over time, Konczak picked up on the similarities between volleyball and the sports he knew best. His interest in it continued to blossom.

“This game is so fast, so exciting — it just drew me in,” Konczak said.

“In my brain, I still relate things to basketball and football a little bit, so I put my own spin on it in that way sometimes. Once I got into it, I really got hooked quickly.”

Experiences at the high school level have gone hand in hand with experiences at the club level. Since he got into the sport eight years ago,

he’s coached with Bradenton Spartans Elite, keeping busy when high school volleyball is in the offseason.

His first position at Bradenton Christian was with its middle school team. He later coached with the freshman team, junior varsity and most recently, was a varsity assistant in 2025.

Even when Konczak wasn’t formally on the sideline for the Panthers, he was persistent about following the team.

“I’ve always valued relationships, and I’ve had such an appetite to learn,” Konczak said. “I basically was at all the varsity stuff all year round ... I would help out wherever I could, and I just kept learning and learning and learning.”

In his first week with the Cougars, Konczak dug through whatever film he could find from last season to learn whatever he could about the team’s returning players. He’s met a few of them, but with everyone scattered during the summer, there are more meetings coming.

His definition of a great coach is one who maintains a high standard and prioritizes accountability. As of June 22, he’s building a staff that shares that vision and will be prepared to execute it once tryouts begin July 27.

Konczak also expects each of his assistants to build up the kids in the program. From that, he said, wins will come.

“I want the coaching staff to pour into the kids. I want the kids to fight for each other,” Konczak said. “I want this program to have an absolute monster mentality. Mentally, we need to be strong enough where it doesn’t matter if we’re up 16-6 or down 16-6.”

His oldest daughter, 19-year-old Nariah Konczak, graduated from Bradenton Christian in 2025 and is a rising sophomore at the State College of Florida.

Sydney Konczak is a rising senior outside hitter for the Panthers at 17 years old.

Aug. 18 against the Cougars will be a strange feeling for her, too, seeing her father by the opposing bench.

With his daughters’ high school volleyball journeys near completion, Dan Konczak has embarked on a journey of his own — even if it required some tough conversations.

“It was a big family decision,” Konczak said.

“A lot of talking.”

A DREAM REALIZED Dan Konczak thought about leading a high school girls volleyball program before, but came across what he saw as the right opportunity with the Cougars.

In his time with Bradenton Christian, he crossed paths with Cardinal Mooney several times. He gained an understanding of the Cougars’ winning tradition during those matchups.

If all goes well, he plans to be their coach for years to come.

“This is not a stepping stone for me. This is not something that I’m trying to grow and then move on to the next,” Konczak said.

“My dream has always been to step into a program and create a legacy.”

It was the first prospect camp for CJ Obaseki. And he left with his first offer from a college football program.

The rising sophomore running back at Riverview High impressed the University of Miami enough on June 17 to receive an offer. In 2025, he didn’t record a carry for the Rams, but projects to be involved in their ground game this fall following the transfer of Toryeon James and graduation of Isaiah Belt. Obaseki, standing at 6-foot-1 and 200 pounds, is the Sarasota Athlete of the Week.

What does it mean for Miami to be your first offer?

It’s definitely something special. Me and my dad (Joe Obaseki), we really like Miami. I remember whenever we played (EA Sports) College Football, I’d always play as (the Hurricanes).

What are your goals for this fall with Riverview?

I want to rush for 2,000 yards for my season total and to ultimately make a meaningful impact on the game.

When and why did you start playing football?

I started playing when I was 10. My brother (Noah Obaseki), he was really good at football. I always liked watching him, and my dad was like, “Give it a try.”
