Taking the lead
The Jazz Club of Sarasota was one of three organizations in Florida featured in the 2026 Great Jazz Venues Guide, a publication of DownBeat magazine established in 1934. The club, founded in 1980, presents about 140 events annually, serving more than 1,000 active members. It also supports music education through a variety of programs. The organization also is set to expand the Sarasota Jazz Festival from five to seven days, reintroduce Jazz in the Park at Phillippi Estate Park and launch monthly concerts. “To be recognized by the magazine for the work we’ve been doing for more than four decades is both gratifying and humbling,” says Ed Linehan, club president. “It reflects the dedication of our members, volunteers, musicians, sponsors and audiences who have helped make this organization what it is today.”

The art of discovery Barbara Gerdeman and Elizabeth Goodwill are best friends and co-founders of Creative Liberties. They are also both fascinated with found objects and their stories, a subject they will explore in the exhibition “Lost and Found” on June 23-28 at Art Ovation Hotel. Gerdeman’s series “Lost Soles” was born from the question of why there were so many single shoes by the side of the road. It will include photographs, with some of the shoes displayed alongside them, as well as stories by her husband, Neal Gerdeman, imagining how the shoes arrived there. Throughout her life, Goodwill has collected items from nature and everyday life. Admission to “Lost & Found” is free. The artists will be present each day from 4-8 p.m., with a public reception 5-8 p.m. June 26.
