Sarasota welcomes new superintendent W hen school starts, the district will welcome a new face: Superintendent Brennan Asplen.

He first applied to be superintendent in 2016, and school board members said his resume has only grown since then. They unanimously chose him for his experience as deputy superintendent in charge of academic and student services in the St. Johns County School District — the highest rated district in Florida — and for his personality.

“He, to me, embodies all of things that we have loved about superintendents in the past,” board member Jane Goodwin said. “He is a great listener, he is kind, and he wants to be in Sarasota County.”

After the board announced

its decision, Asplen said he was humbled and honored to be selected.

“I can’t wait to get down there and start working with you,” he said. “Sarasota County has unlimited potential, and it’s because of the people there and the teachers and the administrators and the community.”

During the interview process, Asplen said he would be a collaborative leader. In his first days as superintendent, he said he would work to build a relationship with the school board and community stakeholders, such as parents, students and administrators.

“There are a lot of problems out there, and there are big problems, but there is nothing that we can’t overcome by

working together,” he said.

In his first few months, Asplen hopes to embed himself in the community and talk with different student groups and community leaders.

“I foresee myself going somewhere every night to see, listen and hear, so I can bring it back to the cabinet,” he said.

In his current role, Asplen oversees three associate superintendents who oversee curriculum and instruction, testing and accountability, exceptional student education, and early childhood learning, among others.

He has 32 years of experience in education and has served as a principal at both the middle and high school levels, one of which was a performing arts magnet high school. He said

he would like to continue adding access to performing arts and courses involving workforce awareness.

Outside of academics, one of the key areas he’d like to address is school culture.

“I believe that competent, caring and inspiring faculty and staff who work as one for the common goal of supporting students to reach their full potential is the cornerstone for student success,” he said.

What to expect as your child heads back to campus Here are some key takeaways from the district’s current plan.

s students head back to school in August, their brand new back-to-school outfit will have one additional accessory: a face mask.

With district officials monitoring COVID-19 regulations and updating the district’s approach daily, it can be difficult for parents and students to know what to expect when the first bell rings Aug. 31.

Education, Sarasota County Schools is considering two plans that would allow students to get back in schools

next month: opening schools Aug. 31 with safety precautions in place or opening schools Aug. 31 while also

providing remote learning.

“We’re looking at what it’s going to take to open our schools with enhanced safety measures in place,” interim Superintendent Mitsi Corcoran said.

A survey sent out to district parents showed that most parents would prefer option one, sending their children back to school with added safety measures. Out of more than 17,200 responses, 74% of parents chose option one.

The district’s option one plan includes some districtwide directives, such as developing a crisis response team and prohibiting field trips until further notice, while some things are left for each SEE PAGE 8

Practice Civility

We don’t always agree with each other, but practice understanding, acceptance and inclusion. Let our children see us being kind to others as this is modeling the very behavior we want to teach our children. Sometimes we are nicer to a stranger than we are to our own family. If you cannot be nice to someone close to you, think of them like a stranger and maybe your attitude will change. Drive through Dunkin Donuts or Starbucks and let your child pay for the person behind you.

Implement other acts of kindness on a regular basis to keep yourself humble.

Communicate Effectively

Help teach your children to communicate effectively. Schedule regular family time to have discussions about community or world events and educate your children about struggles you faced when you were their age and how it affected you. Find a time to have healthy ongoing discussions about your

The district’s current plan offers directives for COVID-19 response in key stages throughout the day.

Parents are asked to check their children daily for COVID-19 symptoms. Those showing symptoms should remain at home until they have been well for at least three days.

Parents also should drive their children to school if possible. When dropping off, parents are asked to stay in their vehicles.

Hand sanitizer will be available on all buses, and the buses will be cleaned after each trip, totaling six cleanings a day.

All students who ride the bus must preregister.

Parents who wish to meet with their child’s teacher should schedule an appointment. Classroom volunteering and lunch with students will not be allowed.

Temperatures will not be taken upon arrival on campus, Corcoran said, because it would take nearly three hours at some schools to screen students safely.

To restrict mixing between groups of students, each school will look at the possibility of teaming students with the same teachers as much as possible.

For example, high school students would be placed in teams in each grade level and move throughout the school together. Middle school students would be teamed and remain in the same room except for special courses, such as math and electives.

Because elementary students are already teamed, the district plan states moving to special courses should not be a problem, though each school will determine how it

will handle transitions.

Additionally, each school should consider one-way patterns in the hallways to control contact. These patterns should utilize outdoor, covered areas.

Release between class periods may be staggered to reduce hallway congestion.

CLASSROOM SPACE

Classrooms will be set up to allow maximum distance between student seating, which means desks and tables will be placed as far apart as possible. Nonessential items will be removed.

Desks and tables will be turned to face the same direction, and barriers will be added where social distancing is not possible.

The district also will identify ancillary spaces, such as large computer labs or hallways, that could be turned into additional classrooms.

Outdoor classrooms will be used when appropriate.

Each child’s belongings will remain separate in the classroom, and sharing of electronic devices will be avoided as much as possible.

Students may eat lunch in the classroom, depending on available cafeteria space.

Hand sanitizer and cleaning supplies will be provided to each room.

SPECIAL CLASSES AND EXTRACURRICULARS

When students participate in special classes, such as art, physical education and band, they will be spaced out as much as possible.

Art materials will be provided to each student and not shared among them. Physical education equipment will be cleaned after each class, and students may be able to bring their own equipment.

Chorus, band and theater students may go outside or have class in the auditoriums to allow extra space, and face shields may be provided upon request.

FHSAA keeps, then alters, fall sports schedule SPORTS REPORTER

On July 20, the FHSAA Board of Directors approved a motion 10-5 to keep July 27 as the start date for all fall sports. FHSAA Executive Director George Tomyn was in favor of sticking with the current plan, arguing

During a three hour, 18 minute meeting, the FHSAA voted 11-4 on July 23 to delay the start of fall sports until at least Aug. 24. The board will meet again, in person, no later than

that it already gives schools plenty of flexibility in regards to starting later if they’re not comfortable doing so on July 27.

Tomyn also said the FHSAA would work with teams in regards to scheduling if they choose not to start on time, thus missing or having to reschedule contests. The board did vote to make the end date of the season more flexible for those that cannot start on time, allowing schools to opt out of state postseason competition and instead play regular-season games through the same date the playoffs will take place.

sory Committee, to develop a full plan for the future of fall sports and determine if the target date of Aug. 24 is appropriate.

As part of the approved motion, teams will be able to follow established summer policy through Aug. 24, meaning the workouts each school district has established as safe may continue. Schools should also continue the screening procedures they have established for student-athletes.

Between the board’s two meetings, the FHSAA received criticism from across the state for not providing enough guidance and forcing individual districts to make complex decisions on their own.

The second meeting did not begin with a vote to delay fall sports on the agenda, but discussion quickly centered around the idea once it was brought up by Chris Patricca, a Lee County School Board

member. Multiple board members brought up the criticisms of the FHSAA during the meeting as a reason why they were now receptive to making a decision for everyone when they were not on Monday.

Sarasota High Athletic Director Mark Aschenbrenner was one of the people critical of the FHSAA’s original decision.

“I felt that the FHSAA Board had a chance to take a stand and make a decision for the entire state,” Aschenbrenner said after the first meeting.

“They had the opportunity to choose an equal starting date, a neutral starting date, and retain competitive equity. Unfortunately, they just maintained the current plan and kicked it back on us.

“Our teams are scheduled to play games across county lines. If those counties all have a different start date, it is going to be a nightmare for scheduling.”

It remains to be seen what plan the FHSAA creates by the Aug. 17 meeting. If the FHSAA opts to let districts

decide things for themselves, Aschenbrenner said he would be open to discussing the Sports Medicine Advisory Committee’s recommendation of moving football and girls volleyball to a different season.

Playing them during the winter season, he said, might allow for more games to be played, which becomes especially important for seniors trying to earn scholarships.

The more they play, the more exposure they get. Even if other sports have to be adjusted for one season for the move to work, it would be worth it.

“Our biggest thing is making this a positive experience for out student-athletes,” Aschenbrenner said. “We need to first keep them healthy and safe, and second make this season a fun experience. We want to have a season, but trying to piece this whole thing together ourselves, this is not the guidance we wanted.”
